48 Insta Captions For Studying At Home And Snapping Shelfies

Sorry, this weekend is all booked.

Some people are born to crack open the books and get studying. And congratulations to them. But for a good many, scrolling on TikTok sounds much more appealing than thumbing through chapter upon chapter of mandatory reading materials. Whichever category you fall under — or maybe you’re somewhere in between — staying on top of your assignments is easier when you've got a workspace you adore, and if it's picture-perfect, you'll need some studying captions for Instagram to go along with your favorite pens and highlighters. If your current desk at home is seriously lacking, this is your chance to give your space a total makeover and start fresh.

Some people like to study at their favorite coffee shop. If that's you, recreate that vibe in your kitchen or backyard with a delicious cup of coffee in a cool mug and a chill pop playlis t that totally sets the vibe. To get the campus library feel, make sure you have shelves to keep all your books in order. Organize them by title, or for something extra Insta-worthy, color-coordinate them. Then, add school spirit to your walls with campus artwork and banners. The studying captions are practically writing themselves.

Create a cozy space with a ton of vibrant lumbar cushions, or a modern WFH setup your friends will be jealous of with houseplants galore . Once you've got the perfect setting, you're ready to snap a studying selfie before diving into your to-do list. These 48 study captions will help you post and get right back to the books in no time.

caption for doing homework

Nothing is more powerful for your future than being a gatherer of good ideas and information. That's called doing your homework.

A genius is a talented person who does his homework.

Homework strongly indicates that the teachers are not doing their jobs well enough during the school day. It's not like they'll let you bring your home stuff to school and work on it there. You can't say, 'I didn't finish sleeping at home, so I have to work on finishing my sleep here.

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. As a result, a genius is often a talented person who has simply done all of his homework.

Homework is a term that means grown up imposed yet self-afflicting torture.

Persistence is important in every endeavor. Whether it's finishing your homework, completing school, working late to finish a project, or "finishing the drill" in sports, winners persist to the point of sacrifice in order to achieve their goals.

I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.

Homework, I have discovered, involves a sharp pencil and thick books and long sighs.

You will never get anywhere if you do not do your homework.

We're doing our homework to make sure we're prepared.

Do your homework or hire wise experts to help you. Never jump into a business you have no idea about.

When was the last time you used the words 'teach me'? Maybe not since you started first grade? Here's an irony about school: The daily grind of tests, homework, and pressures sometimes blunts rather than stimulates a thirst for knowledge.

The more you do your homework, the more you're free to be intuitive. But you've got to put the work in.

College is about three things: homework, fun, and sleep...but you can only choose two.

The best schools tend to have the best teachers, not to mention parents who supervise homework, so there is less need for self-organised learning. But where a child comes from a less supportive home environment, where there are family tensions perhaps, their schoolwork can suffer. They need to be taught to think and study for themselves.

One of life's most painful moments comes when we must admit that we didn't do our homework, that we are not prepared.

To overcome stress you have to find out something. You've got to do some research and homework. You need to find out who you are today.

My life is a black hole of boredom and despair." "So basically you've been doing homework." "Like I said, black hole.

Do your homework, study the craft, believe in yourself, and out-work everyone.

Do as much homework as you can. Learn everybody's job and don't just settle.

If you want to be lucky, do your homework.

I'm learning skills I will use for the rest of my life by doing homework...procrastinating and negotiation.

You have got to pay attention, you have got to study and you have to do your homework. You have to score higher than everybody else. Otherwise, there is always somebody there waiting to take your place.

You don’t get rich off your day job, you get rich off your homework.

5 AI tools for students: Use AI to help you study, summarize content, and edit papers

Ace your classes with an AI assist.

A person typing on a laptop with a virtual display in front of them with the text

  • Quizlet Q-Chat
  • Google Socratic

I wish these AI tools for students were around when I was in school. Sure, AI tools can't do your homework, write your papers, or take your exams, but they can make your life a lot easier.

With AI, long book chapters can be summarized into quick, easy-to-study bullet points, classes can be recorded and transcribed so you can be laser-focused, and weirdly worded paragraphs can be revised with AI-generated text — and that's just scratching the surface of how AI can help you as a student.

The number of AI-powered services available for students can be overwhelming, so we've rounded up the 5 best AI tools for students.

Best AI tool for editing and summarizing text: Grammarly

Screenshot of Grammarly AI tool

Grammarly is easily one of the best AI tools for students because of the wide variety of tasks it can help with.

The most obvious way Grammarly can help you is with text generation and revision suggestions for emails, cover letters, resumes, and even school assignments. The critical warning is that you should never use AI to completely write a paper from scratch, this is a homework assistant, not something doing your homework for you. Grammarly's AI features are best used as supplemental tools that can help you get started with a tough paragraph, find a new way to say something, or edit your papers after they're written.

A few lesser-known AI features Grammarly offers include summarizing big blocks of text, generating ideas for projects, adjusting your writing tone, and providing helpful writing prompts. You can even use Grammarly to help caption your Instagram posts when you're done with homework.

Grammarly's free account lets you generate text with 100 AI prompts every month, but the premium $12/month (billed annually) option can rewrite full sentences, adjust writing tone, and generate text with 1,000 AI prompts monthly.

Best AI tool for intuitive studying: Quizlet Q-Chat

quizlet q-chat ai tool for students.jpg

Most students are already familiar with Quizlet and its virtual sets of flashcards to help you master subjects. But to take your studying game to the next level, you need to check out its AI-powered Q-Chat tutor .

There are multiple ways Q-Chat can help you test your knowledge, including AI-generated quizzes, lessons, conversations, and fun games like two truths and a lie. You can also use Q-Chat to help you learn a new language, but Duolingo is a better AI tool for that purpose.

Quizlet lets you try out Q-Chat conversations with a free account, but to use its full features, you'll need a Quizlet Plus account for $7.99/month or $35.99/year.

Best AI tool for recording and summarizing classes: Otter.ai

otter.ai tool for students

When you try to take notes and listen to your professor at the same time, you can sometimes miss important information. With Otter.ai , you can record the class, get transcripts and summaries, and put all your attention into listening to your teacher.

Otter is an incredibly helpful AI tool for students with ADHD or anyone else who finds it difficult to multitask in class and pay attention. However, it's worth noting that you should get permission from your teacher before recording them with Otter.

If you're an online student, Otter works with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams to record, transcribe, and summarize virtual classes. You can also use Otter to record meetings for group projects to easily keep track of what was talked about and what actions were assigned to everyone.

Best AI tool for explaining concepts: Google Socratic

socratic by google ai tool for students

Socratic by Google is a free AI tool available for Android and iOS that helps explain complex concepts to students with helpful visuals, AI-generated answers to questions, and links to relevant YouTube videos.

The app can help high school and university-level students with basic subjects, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, biology, chemistry, physics, history, and literature.

Socratic can solve math problems and answer questions, but it shouldn't be used to complete homework for you. Instead, it's a useful AI tool when you're stuck on a problem or you don't understand why you got an answer wrong. Socratic can show you step-by-step explanations, helping prepare you for exams.

Another free tool that can offer in-depth explanations is Bing Chat , a GPT-4-based chatbot. This tool scours the entire internet, so Bing Chat can find answers to more complex questions on various subjects compared to Socratic.

Best AI tool for researching academic papers: Consensus

consensus research ai tool for students

Consensus is an AI search engine for research that helps students find academic papers and studies. This AI tool is best for college and late-high school students who are starting to write research papers requiring academic sources.

You can type any research question or topic into the Consensus website to find relevant sources, and each pulled source will have pre-populated citations in multiple formats for you to copy and paste into your paper.

Consensus also paired up with Copilot to bring ChatGPT -type functionality to the service. This means you can tack on a command to your search, like "Group together pro and con cases" or "Explain for an 8-year-old."

A free Consensus account gives you unlimited searches, unlimited AI-powered filters, and 20 AI credits every month for more powerful features, like GPT-4 Summaries, Consensus Meters, Study Snapshots, and Copilot. For unlimited use of those more powerful features, a premium subscription costs $8.99/month.

There is an art to writing effective captions for Instagram . It’s a talent, even!

Coming up with the visual is sometimes hard enough, and THEN you have to think about what to say to accompany it. No wonder so many entrepreneurs and small business owners get overwhelmed with where to start!

If you struggle with knowing how to write Instagram captions, I’ve created the ultimate blog post for you! In this guide, you’ll find:

  • 10 major types of Instagram captions
  • 20 examples of these captions from real-world posts
  • 10 bonus tips on how you can implement each type for your brand

Read below for what I hope will be a major dose of inspiration and reference material for you when you feel stuck with brainstorming captions for Instagram.

And yes, if you’re wondering, the caption types follow after the “Friends” episode naming style 🤪

1. The One that Feels Like a Micro-Blog

In a time where the algorithm changes have people frustrated, many Instagram users are beginning to realize that it isn’t all about the number of “likes” a photo gets.

In fact, I recommend ignoring likes altogether since they are more of a vanity metric now anyway. Instead, focus on stronger signals of audience engagement on Instagram that *actually* move the needle for your business.

For example, the number of SAVES your posts get is a great indicator that you’ve tuned into what your audience wants and needs. Even better, you’ve given them enough value that they take actio and “save” the post.

This is where microblogs – or long-form captions – come into play. These captions are jam-packed and offer users information, education, or inspiration that they’ll want to reference in the future.

The caption from this life coach busts through a common misconception, complemented by the comparison outlined in the carousel. You can see by the comments people took this to heart and used the slides to identify the voices they have in their own minds.

Here’s some inspo of my favorite types of content to share:⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣Branded Photos: Working with a photographer is always my top recommendation for business investments. Getting a gallery of quality images that use props, colors, and poses related to your brand instantly uplevel your grid. @christinajonesphoto is my go-to gal!⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣Micro Videos: When I’m wanting to share a quick tip, micro-videos under 1-minute is the way to go. Simply by adding a progress bar and transcription with an app like @veedstudio, you’ll increase video retention.⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣Carousel Posts: [like this one] Carousel’s are a great way to use graphics to offer saveable and shareable value to your audience. @dianagetssocial is a BOSS at creating these, go check out her feed to see how it’s done!⠀ ⠀ 4️⃣Stop Motion: Stop motion videos created with @lifelapse_app can add visual interest to your feed and grab your follower’s attention. ⠀ ⠀ 5️⃣Graphics: I’ve loved working with my designer @fabiring to get creative when it comes to branded graphics for my grid. These types of graphics are saveable and shareable! ⠀ ⠀ 6️⃣IGTV Video Previews: If you’re on IGTV, you NEED to be sharing a 1-minute preview to your feed to increase your views. Be strategic with your cover photo, description, and title since they will become apart of your feed. ⠀ ⠀ 7️⃣Memes: A personal favorite, memes and GIFs add a lighthearted sense of humor to your feed. I use Headliner for GIF memes or the stories editor for text memes.⠀ ⠀ I’ve had fun experimenting with new content types as apart of my grid. Which is your fave?!⠀ A post shared by Natasha | Instagram Strategy (@solstudiomarketing) on Mar 19, 2020 at 8:45am PDT
Tip: If you’re going to do a long-form caption, break up the wall of text with line breaks or emojis (if they’re on brand), and even font formatting like bold and italics with simple tools like this one .

2. The One that Has a Strong Viewpoint

More than ever before, people are aligning themselves with brands that mirror their own values. To encourage more brand affinity, don’t be afraid to take a stand, voice your opinion, or even go against the grain in your industry. Not only do these posts get lots of engagement (think Story shares & comments) but they help nurture your existing relationships.

To counteract Instagram negativity, I outlined 3 positive ways to look at recents changes on the platform. Not only was my audience grateful, but it started on ongoing discussion that helped support my Instagram content creation course launch .

This hand letterer calls out her audience for using excuses for not showing up on social media. The caption asks them to weigh in on this in the comments. She got 123 responses! Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for the engagement you want.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Hom (@homsweethom)
💡 Tip: Bonus points go to Instagram captions that touch on current events or other timely happenings in the broader culture. These often get shared like WOAH!

3. The One that is Clever or Funny

What can I say? Humans on Instagram love anything funny and relatable. After all, that’s why memes have been and will continue to be sooooo popular .

Don’t be afraid to poke a little fun at yourself or your brand, or tell a funny tidbit about what went on behind-the-scenes of the making of the image.

Plus, puns, sarcasm, plays-on-words, and jokes make great captions as an offset to a more serious photo, or really anytime you just aren’t sure how to caption your post.

A parenting coach shares a wacky Reel that surely captured eyeballs! Plus, a sweet reminder in the caption is likely appreciated by her audience filled with parents.

A compilation of funny tweets all about money compiled by a finance expert. This expands her reach by re-sharing high-performing content from other people (although she should have tagged them if possible) and gives her audience something to laugh about & comment on.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tori Dunlap — Money Expert (@herfirst100k)
💡 Tip: Every brand or biz needs to find their unique tone and voice with these kinds of captions, not opting for jokes or puns that aren’t “on brand” but instead, translating their brand personality, genuinely.

4. The One with a Call-to-Action

The point of Instagram, and social media in general, is to nurture your audience and inspire them to take action. That means you should always be considering ways to bridge your audience off of the platform. After all, you don’t own your followers – Mark Zuckerberg does! 🤪

The actions they can take are endless and vary by industry. It could mean you direct people to read a blog on your website, claim a discount for your products, or attend a free training… all with the goal of capturing their email.

That way, you can nurture the relationship outside of the whims of the ever-changing algorithm and open yourself up to marketing to them via email.

I wrote this caption to give a preview of my blog filled with my 25 top Instagram content editing apps , leading up to a call-to-action to tap the link in my bio to read the full blog on my website where I have free offers and opt-ins they can sign up for.

💡 Tip: Use active verbs to nudge people to take action. Also, emphasize what you’re asking the audience to do with emojis or font formatting so it stands out. Also, make sure your link in bio system is friction-less and easy-to-use.

5. The One that Educates

Offering followers a chance to learn something is another way to make them want to hit that save button on your post. Who doesn’t love tips and tricks?

You ARE an expert at something so here are a few prompts to get your juices flowing:

  • What can I teach that others would find helpful?
  • I wish people knew this thing….
  • How can I change peoples’ minds about something?

This “Educational” content category is one of the best types of posts that will drive real business results . 🎥 Watch my free Instagram content training for more examples and how to create this kind of content for YOUR business, regardless of industry or audience size.

The real meat of this post is in the caption when she shares “The evidence of doing friendship right is …” and outlines a few points. Not only does this get her audience thinking, but it gives them permission to go through hard moments and bounce back from them with grace.

To promote my podcast episode, I shared a helpful case study of how I get leads on autopilot from my own campaigns and why ads don’t have to be sleazy. The caption is a perfect complement to the interview itself (note the CTA to listen).

Tip: We all have something to share – whether we’re a blogger, brand, or consultant. Lean into what your unique expertise is and be of service. This is how loyalty is built on Instagram.

6. The One that Encourages Engagement

Like I already mentioned, Instagram is becoming less about the likes and more about the overall engagement (comments, shares, saves, views, reach).

With that in mind, share and create content you know your followers will want to see and then encourage them to engage with your post through the caption.

Ask them a question that will drive them to respond. Have them tell a story that is similar to one you’ve just told. And don’t forget to respond back and acknowledge their comment!

You can encourage even more engagement by telling them you will re-share some top answers on your future feed post or Stories, too.

Esembly, a cloth diaper company, asked their audience to share how many diapers they’ve saved from the trash. The caption outlines how to take part and many people did, both in the comments and on their Stories, netting big reach for the brand.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Esembly | organic cloth diapers + accessories (@esemblybaby)

Powerhouse Women, a membership community of entrepreneurs, asked what their followers need right now and got an overwhelming response in the comments. This is an amazing way to tailor your content based on what your audience wants *right now*.

View this post on Instagram At the core of what we believe is that we are NOT meant to do business (or life) alone ? so we want to know, what’s one thing you need right now?⁣ ⁣ Post it in the comments!??????⁣ ⁣ We firmly believe that in a collaborative community like ours you are only a conversation away from ANY contact, resource, or answer you need in order to take the next step toward your big dream!⁣ ⁣ Sp what do YOU need right now? Tell us below, then scroll through the other comments to see if you have an answer/resource/contact for someone else! A post shared by || POWERHOUSE WOMEN || (@powerhouse_women) on Mar 6, 2020 at 7:59am PST
💡 Tip: The more engagement (likes, comments, shares, and saves) you get on your posts quickly, the more reach it will inevitably have. Whip up engagement by responding quickly or even commenting or liking your follower’s posts so they come visit yours.

7. The One that Feels Authentic

People buy from businesses they like and trust. Don’t be afraid to let people in behind-the-scenes of your business and show them the human who is running it (with boundaries, of course).

Vulnerability and authenticity can seem scary at first, but there’s a reason that those who are more “authentic” have a higher engagement and more loyal following.

We hear all the time that social media is a “highlight reel,” only ever showing the good, but when people and brands are authentic, it adds a level of relatability that we’re all searching for.

Tell your story and share your highs AND lows.

Jenna Kutcher, business coach, opened up about her journey to navigate entrepreneurship while being a new mom and her story shares a positive lesson that clearly resonated with her audience based on the number of comments.

View this post on Instagram She was just 3 months old when I logged in for the first time. ??‍? I was coming out of the postpartum fog, wrapping up my maternity leave and even though the voices in my head were telling me I couldn’t do it, I didn’t listen. I logged into the course, pulled out a calendar, wrote down lessons and modules and committed myself to just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. I thought to myself that learning is worth just 2% of my time in this season… that’s all it was. ⏰ I would strap her in the Ergo and walk the cul de sacs listening to the lessons in my ear. I put in earbuds while I rocked her to sleep. I played their voices while I shampooed my hair in the shower. ? This program was a saving grace in a season of my life where I felt like I had lost my groove. ?? The community I led filled with students? It became a family, a lifeline. I look back at these photos and remember that season with such vividness because it was a season where I questioned if I really was made for more than diaper changes, lullabies and breast milk. That 2% of my time carried me through to bigger and better things than I even dreamt possible. If you’re thinking you don’t have time to learn, instead of saying that, just say out loud, “Learning isn’t a priority in my life right now” and see how that feels. If it stings, that’s alright, because it shows that you know you have it in you for choice and change. Cheers to leaps of faith, priorities, doing our best with what we’ve got and saying “screw you” to the voices in our head that tell us we can’t. We can do ANYTHING. ✨ Use only emojis to tell me what you want to learn this year! ?? A post shared by JENNA KUTCHER (@jennakutcher) on Feb 24, 2020 at 5:49pm PST

I was honest with my audience about the funk I was coming out of and how it impacted how I showed up on social media and in my business. I was delighted by the amount of support I got in the comments.

Tip: There’s a difference between being authentic and performing authenticity for the sake of engagement. It can often be a fine line in this crazy world we live in, but staying true to yourself and your brand’s values will be a strong guiding compass.

8. The One that Builds Community

I think we all can admit the best thing to come from Instagram is the communities we’ve all built both within and outside of the app. A great way to expand and strengthen those communities is to invite your followers to tag a friend who would appreciate seeing your post or can relate to the subject at hand. Doing so also gives you the opportunity to connect with new people and potential followers.

Sustainable clothing brand, Prana, shares inspiring stories of women making a positive change in the world and encouraged their followers to tag a “trailblazing woman” they know to spread the love.

View this post on Instagram Here’s to the women who shatter molds, tackle dreams, and forge communities with both power and grace. Jess Ekstrom, speaker and author, is great at engaging her audience with short & simple images . She delivers this little poem about tax season and encouraged her followers to tag their #workwife in the comments in the caption, broadening her own reach.

View this post on Instagram My kind of valentine ♥️?? . Tag your #workwife valentine in the comments ? A post shared by Jess Ekstrom (@jess_ekstrom) on Feb 14, 2020 at 5:03am PST
Tip: So many brands and content creators focus on talking “at” their audience on Instagram when this platform is so darn powerful for relationship building. Instead, think about talking “with” your audience and grow a two-way relationship with captions like this.

9. The One That is Short and Sweet

If you’re really struggling to come up with a caption, this type is where “less is more” can be applied. Sometimes your image really does speak for itself so there may not be a need for further explanation, or you really just don’t have a lot to say. It’s ok to keep your caption short and to the point and just add in an emoji or two!

Freelancing Females was inspired by meme culture with this post and let the photo itself do the heavy lifting.

A post that gives this author’s audience the permission to be exactly as they are. The caption is super short + sweet, asking a question that a few people weighed in on in the comments.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jess Ekstrom (@jess_ekstrom)
Tip: Short captions are often best utilized for posts with images that “speak for themselves” or if you want to engage your following. Best to test things out!

10. The One With User-Generated Content

I think we can all relate to loving a shout-out. Ask for testimonials from your clients that you can use as a caption alongside an image of the work you’ve done for/with them or their experience with your brand.

Or literally use the comments from your audience to create content that showcases them. This type is a great opportunity to bring your brand to life through the eyes of your followers and customers, while showing appreciation for them at the same time.

One Medical, a tech-driven primary care practice in the US, used a patient’s story and image to share a positive experience their brand provided, all the while making it feel human and real, not like an advertisement.

Every week, The Moth – a popular storytelling event – encourages their followers to tell a story based on a specific prompt and then shares a follower’s story a few days later. It has become one of their most popular posts on the Gram and has built-up engagement over time.

💡 Tip: Take a cue from these examples and build-in interaction and UGC into your overarching content strategy, especially if you can make it a regularly-scheduled series or showcase that people will come to expect. That will drive engagement!

To Sum It Up

Writing captions can be a daunting task for sure. That’s why I recommend batch scheduling your Instagram content – both your visuals AND captions – in advance. You can better get into the “writing zone” and ensure your content is consistent and strategic.

5 Tips For Creating A Great Instagram Caption

1. write several drafts first.

Make at least three different Instagram caption drafts.

This will allow you to edit, proofread, and compare your captions side by side to see which one has the most effect.

Your first draft will almost never be selected as the best option, which is why you should set aside enough time to write several.

2. Front-load the most important information

The 2,200-characters limit for Instagram captions is mostly a formality. However, it's worth noting that ig captions are cut off in users’ feeds to around 140 characters.

This doesn't mean you must make your insta captions extremely short so people can see everything without clicking "more."

Instead, frontload your captions with the most important sentence or calls-to-action, and save any @mentions, hashtags, or other unimportant information for the end.

article

3. Include a strong call to action

The most effective way to maximize the possibility for your Instagram post to get shared and improve engagement is to include a call to action in the captions.

Instead of passively scrolling through, you should use action verbs to encourage people to take action.

Here are some exåmples:

  • Visit the link in bio to learn more
  • Share your experience in the comments
  • Enter by liking this photo and signing up for our monthly newsletter

article

4. Limit yourself to 3-4 hashtags

A hashtag on Instagram works the same way it does on Twitter and Facebook: it unites the conversations of many users into a single stream.

Anyone who searches for that hashtag on Instagram may see your Insta post if your account is public.

However, you should use hashtags sparingly. As a means to get more followers, some Instagram users add a string of searchable hashtags.

Too many hashtags can come off spammy to your existing followers. Limit yourself to three or four hashtags at most.

article

5. Use emojis and have fun with them.

Add some emojis to spice up your insta captions and make them more appealing.

Emojis added at the end of sentences or paragraphs may act as "bookends," visually breaking up long strings of text.

You can also use emojis to encourage readers to take action, such as clicking the link in the bio.

If you're going to use emojis, make sure they match your tone of voice and identity. You don't want to use too many emojis at once, particularly in the same caption.

What Rescheduling Marijuana Means For The Cannabis Industry

With the DEA set to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, weed companies will finally get a break from a punitive federal tax rate—and cannabis stocks have already rallied.

I n a historic move, the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration will end its ban on cannabis by reclassifying it as a less dangerous drug . According to the Associated Press , the DEA has proposed moving marijuana from its current status as a Schedule I narcotic—alongside heroin and LSD—to Schedule III, which includes drugs such as ketamine, Tylenol with codeine, anabolic steroids and opioid-use disorder medication buprenorphine. The move marks the most significant change in marijuana reform since pot was outlawed by the Controlled Substances Act in 1970.

The DEA’s recommendation has been hotly anticipated for many months. In October 2022, President Biden asked the Department of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General to review “expeditiously” how marijuana is scheduled under federal law. By August 2023, HHS completed its review, concluding that cannabis has some legitimate medical benefits and sent its recommendation to the DEA, asking the agency to re-classify marijuana as a Schedule III drug. Biden also addressed the subject in his State of the Union address in March, declaring that “no one should be jailed for using or possessing marijuana.”

The proposal is not yet final as it must first clear the White House Office of Management and Budget and undergo a public-comment period. The news that the Biden administration would reclassify marijuana immediately electrified the $28 billion cannabis industry—composed of 38 states that have some form of regulated marijuana sales, with 24 states allowing sales to people 21 and older. Some pot stocks were up 25% within hours of AP report.

“It goes without saying that this is the most significant cannabis reform in modern history and sets us on the clear path to federal legalization,” says David Culver, vice president of industry trade and lobbying organization U.S. Cannabis Council.

The most profound impact the DEA’s historic policy change would have on licensed cannabis companies would be on taxes. The move from Schedule I to Schedule III means that cannabis companies will not have to file under U.S. code 280e, the punitive tax measure reserved for drug traffickers that bans most deductions. (The effective tax rate for most cannabis companies is around 80% of gross revenue.)

“Removing the 280e burden is enough for the industry to have a turning point moment and succeed financially,” says Culver. He also believes that ending the ban on marijuana at the federal level will open things up for greater reform. “We won’t be sitting next to heroin anymore,” Culver adds, “so lawmakers will have an easier time working on additional cannabis reforms.”

Josh Schiller, an attorney and partner at Boies Schiller Flexner, says the move to Schedule III is a step in the right direction but not enough. Schiller and David Boies are suing Attorney General Merrick Garland on behalf of several cannabis companies in Massachusetts to challenge the federal prohibition of marijuana and the government’s ability to interfere with state-regulated cannabis programs. “This will not provide the relief our lawsuit seeks,” says Schiller, “but it is the clearest statement that government no longer has a policy to eradicate marijuana across the U.S.”

The immediate effect, Schiller adds, will be that cannabis companies will no longer be “treated as criminal enterprises, for tax purposes.”

The rescheduling of cannabis, however, provides no legal fix to the banking issues that have long plagued the industry, nor will it allow U.S.-based cannabis companies to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ.

The move to Schedule III still leaves plenty of unanswered questions—including whether state-licensed cannabis companies have to stop selling products until the U.S. Food & Drug Administration rules on approvals. “There is a question as to whether recreational stores can continue to exist,” Schiller says, “or whether they need to obtain some form of licensing to comply with whatever regulations are forthcoming.” Schiller and Boies advocate for no federal oversight over state-licensed cannabis companies, while Schedule III requires more federal oversight.

Andrew Freedman , the executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Coalition for Cannabis Policy, Education and Regulation, cautions people not to think the DEA is legalizing weed. “This has little- to no actual impact to the current criminal status of the cannabis industry, or the criminality of using it as a consumer,” says Freedman.

In other words, the current dispensary model that has rolled out across America state by state is still unlawful under federal law and will require more policy changes. “The strict prohibition of cannabis has been a story about its unbelievable deleterious impact and now we've had two federal agencies, both FDA and DEA, say that the deleterious effects were overblown, and that the potential medical effects were underestimated,” says Freedman. “It’s a big deal for cannabis, but it is really more of a signal towards the bigger policy debate than an actual policy movement.”

For long time cannabis investors such as Emily Paxhia, cofounder and managing partner of Poseidon Investment Management, the Schedule III news could not have come any sooner. “I’m doing better than yesterday, when I thought I was dead,” says Paxhia, who cofounded her pioneering San Francisco–based hedge fund in 2013. “This legitimizes the cannabis industry as a legitimate part of the U.S. economy.”

Under the blanket of federal prohibition and a lack of movement for years, the cannabis industry has been deprived of institutional capital and stock prices and company valuations have cratered. With Schedule III, Paxhia believes more investors will be willing to put money to work in the sector.

“The industry has been devoid of federal reform that has indicated any progress for years, but this is an incredibly important and positive indicator for capital to be able to start flowing back into the industry,” says Paxhia. “This is one key acknowledgement from the federal government that cannabis has a place in our society.”

In Washington, no one who has been fighting longer and harder for cannabis legalization than Congressman Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat from Oregon and founder and co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus. Blumenauer—who is retiring this year after nearly 30 years in Congress—wants to see full de-scheduling, which would put marijuana in a similar legal category as tobacco and alcohol. The 75-year-old congressman remains optimistic that the federal government will finally end its pot prohibition.

“If today’s reporting proves true, we will be one step closer to ending the failed war on drugs,” Blumenauer tells Forbes . “Marijuana was scheduled more than 50 years ago based on stigma, not science. The American people have made clear in state after state that cannabis legalization is inevitable. The Biden-Harris Administration is listening.”

Captions to tables, figures and images give the reader context for what they are seeing. Therefore, it’s important to provide a good caption for each table, figure and image in your text. [1] X Research source

Writing the Caption

Step 1 Be descriptive.

  • For instance, if you’re including a picture of a field in a paper about biology, your caption should tell why the field is important to your discussion.

Step 2 If you are describing a table or graph, talk about variables.

Including Source Information

Step 1 Cite your source under the graph or table if it comes from somewhere else.

  • Note: The caption goes before the “from.”

Step 3 Cite according to American Psychological Association style.

  • Note: In this one, the source goes after the caption.

Expert Q&A

Heather Gallagher

  • Don’t be overly wordy. The best captions are simple—they don’t distract from the image or figure. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

MIT faculty, instructors, students experiment with generative AI in teaching and learning

How can MIT’s community leverage generative AI to support learning and work on campus and beyond?

At MIT’s Festival of Learning 2024, faculty and instructors, students, staff, and alumni exchanged perspectives about the digital tools and innovations they’re experimenting with in the classroom. Panelists agreed that generative AI should be used to scaffold — not replace — learning experiences.

This annual event, co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor, celebrates teaching and learning innovations. When introducing new teaching and learning technologies, panelists stressed the importance of iteration and teaching students how to develop critical thinking skills while leveraging technologies like generative AI.

“The Festival of Learning brings the MIT community together to explore and celebrate what we do every day in the classroom,” said Christopher Capozzola, senior associate dean for open learning. “This year's deep dive into generative AI was reflective and practical — yet another remarkable instance of ‘mind and hand’ here at the Institute.”

Incorporating generative AI into learning experiences

MIT faculty and instructors aren’t just willing to experiment with generative AI — some believe it’s a necessary tool to prepare students to be competitive in the workforce. “In a future state, we will know how to teach skills with generative AI, but we need to be making iterative steps to get there instead of waiting around,” said Melissa Webster, lecturer in managerial communication at MIT Sloan School of Management.

Some educators are revisiting their courses’ learning goals and redesigning assignments so students can achieve the desired outcomes in a world with AI. Webster, for example, previously paired written and oral assignments so students would develop ways of thinking. But, she saw an opportunity for teaching experimentation with generative AI. If students are using tools such as ChatGPT to help produce writing, Webster asked, “how do we still get the thinking part in there?”

One of the new assignments Webster developed asked students to generate cover letters through ChatGPT and critique the results from the perspective of future hiring managers. Beyond learning how to refine generative AI prompts to produce better outputs, Webster shared that “students are thinking more about their thinking.” Reviewing their ChatGPT-generated cover letter helped students determine what to say and how to say it, supporting their development of higher-level strategic skills like persuasion and understanding audiences.

Takako Aikawa, senior lecturer at the MIT Global Studies and Languages Section, redesigned a vocabulary exercise to ensure students developed a deeper understanding of the Japanese language, rather than just right or wrong answers. Students compared short sentences written by themselves and by ChatGPT and developed broader vocabulary and grammar patterns beyond the textbook. “This type of activity enhances not only their linguistic skills but stimulates their metacognitive or analytical thinking,” said Aikawa. “They have to think in Japanese for these exercises.”

While these panelists and other Institute faculty and instructors are redesigning their assignments, many MIT undergraduate and graduate students across different academic departments are leveraging generative AI for efficiency: creating presentations, summarizing notes, and quickly retrieving specific ideas from long documents. But this technology can also creatively personalize learning experiences. Its ability to communicate information in different ways allows students with different backgrounds and abilities to adapt course material in a way that’s specific to their particular context.

Generative AI, for example, can help with student-centered learning at the K-12 level. Joe Diaz, program manager and STEAM educator for MIT pK-12 at Open Learning, encouraged educators to foster learning experiences where the student can take ownership. “Take something that kids care about and they’re passionate about, and they can discern where [generative AI] might not be correct or trustworthy,” said Diaz.

Panelists encouraged educators to think about generative AI in ways that move beyond a course policy statement. When incorporating generative AI into assignments, the key is to be clear about learning goals and open to sharing examples of how generative AI could be used in ways that align with those goals.

The importance of critical thinking

Although generative AI can have positive impacts on educational experiences, users need to understand why large language models might produce incorrect or biased results. Faculty, instructors, and student panelists emphasized that it’s critical to contextualize how generative AI works. “[Instructors] try to explain what goes on in the back end and that really does help my understanding when reading the answers that I’m getting from ChatGPT or Copilot,” said Joyce Yuan, a senior in computer science.

Jesse Thaler, professor of physics and director of the National Science Foundation Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions, warned about trusting a probabilistic tool to give definitive answers without uncertainty bands. “The interface and the output needs to be of a form that there are these pieces that you can verify or things that you can cross-check,” Thaler said.

When introducing tools like calculators or generative AI, the faculty and instructors on the panel said it’s essential for students to develop critical thinking skills in those particular academic and professional contexts. Computer science courses, for example, could permit students to use ChatGPT for help with their homework if the problem sets are broad enough that generative AI tools wouldn’t capture the full answer. However, introductory students who haven’t developed the understanding of programming concepts need to be able to discern whether the information ChatGPT generated was accurate or not.

Ana Bell, senior lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and MITx digital learning scientist, dedicated one class toward the end of the semester of Course 6.100L (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python) to teach students how to use ChatGPT for programming questions. She wanted students to understand why setting up generative AI tools with the context for programming problems, inputting as many details as possible, will help achieve the best possible results. “Even after it gives you a response back, you have to be critical about that response,” said Bell. By waiting to introduce ChatGPT until this stage, students were able to look at generative AI’s answers critically because they had spent the semester developing the skills to be able to identify whether problem sets were incorrect or might not work for every case.

A scaffold for learning experiences

The bottom line from the panelists during the Festival of Learning was that generative AI should provide scaffolding for engaging learning experiences where students can still achieve desired learning goals. The MIT undergraduate and graduate student panelists found it invaluable when educators set expectations for the course about when and how it’s appropriate to use AI tools. Informing students of the learning goals allows them to understand whether generative AI will help or hinder their learning. Student panelists asked for trust that they would use generative AI as a starting point, or treat it like a brainstorming session with a friend for a group project. Faculty and instructor panelists said they will continue iterating their lesson plans to best support student learning and critical thinking.

Panelists from both sides of the classroom discussed the importance of generative AI users being responsible for the content they produce and avoiding automation bias — trusting the technology’s response implicitly without thinking critically about why it produced that answer and whether it’s accurate. But since generative AI is built by people making design decisions, Thaler told students, “You have power to change the behavior of those tools.”

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.
