'Christy' starring Mathew Thomas, Malavika Mohanan is a celebration of unconditional love
Have you fallen in love at least once? Without knowing whether you would be loved, without expecting anything - uncertainly and unconditionally... a love without even knowing whether he or she would love you back? That kind of selfless love? If yes, the film 'Christy' will touch you deeply. “There is a sea with endless waves between you and me. In it, there is a yacht sailing the high tides of love.” This is what Roy seems to be telling Christy.
'Christy' revolves around a teenager named Roy living who resides in Poovar, a coastal village near Thiruvananthapuram. Christy is his neighbour. What is sweet is that Roy has no boundaries for his love for Christy. No rights and wrongs. Roy lives like any lover emboldened by love. He wriggles in love like a fish out of water; hoping that the sea would reach out and take the fish back into the waters.
Christy drew the attention of the viewers initially as the film’s script is written by two celebrated writers of recent times in Malayalam. Benyamin, who has written novels including the magnificent ‘Adujeevitham’ on one side, and G R Indugopan, who thrills the readers with his stories exuding a rustic charm and zing, on the other side.
Review | No experiments, 'Kannur Squad' is a pure Mammootty cop show
'Chattambi': Sreenath Bhasi shines in this slow, yet engrossing film | Movie review
When these two writers collaborate and write a script, most people might think the film is entwined in literature. Nevertheless, in Christy, the duo has presented the magic of absorbing the love story of any common man, in a very simple, genuine manner, into the story. Christy’s love, pain and lost love are all beautifully narrated without unnecessary adornments.
‘Christy’ doesn’t enter the intense arena of love and lust, like ‘Malena’ or ’Rathi Nirvedham’. Instead, it takes the viewer along riding through the ups and downs of love on an old ‘BSA SLR bicycle. It is an innocent portrayal of love.
Anand C Chandran’s camera eyes open to those visuals with love. The visual frames of the movie are spectacular and picturesque. The music created by Govind Vasantha for this love story on his violin lingers on.
Mathew and Malavika Mohanan are sure to enter the viewers’ hearts as Roy and Christy. Artists Joy Mathews, Neena Kurup, Rajesh Madhavan and others present bold performances throughout the film. One would never feel this is a film made by a debutant filmmaker. Alwin Henry has directed the movie with total composure and grasp.
Christy is a story that is narrated during the period 2007-2008. Roy seems to hesitate thinking about whether to reveal his love or not. He buys a recharge coupon, scratches and recharges his phone to make a call to his love. The phone balance runs out even before he finishes talking… Will Christy say that she loves him or that she doesn’t?
Let us take a ticket to watch‘Christy’ and feel the love in the rain, the breeze and the waves that gently stroke and move past.

Christy Movie Review: Malavika Mohanan, Mathew Thomas’ film is a mediocre love drama
Director alvin henry’s romantic drama features malavika mohanan and mathew thomas in lead roles. the film talks about boundaries and a complicated relationship between a tutor and her teenage student..
Listen to Story
- Christy is directed by Alvin Henry.
- The film features Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas.
- The film hit theatres on February 17.
Release Date: 17 Feb, 2023
When Christy's trailer, starring Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas, was unveiled, it got mixed reactions. The film talks about a teenager falling for his tutor. In Christy, the filmmaker starts by showcasing the events that happened in real life. The story is an autobiography of a sort by director Alvin Henry.
The movie is about Roy (Mathew Thomas), a teenager who falls in love with his tutor Christy (Malavika Mohanan). Set in the close-knit coastal community of Poovar, Roy's declining academic performance prompts his family to meet Christy and request her to help him with his studies. Meanwhile, Christy is struggling in her personal life as she recently got divorced from her abusive spouse. She has a breakdown and when Roy witnesses it, he skips his first class. Eventually, Roy becomes a beacon of hope in Christy's life, providing her with warmth and companionship.
Christy shows Roy's perspective and we don't get to see Christy's point of view in the narrative. The one-sided portrayal of their relationship makes you wonder if it's just infatuation or genuine love.
The film was also problematic in places, especially with the portrayal of Christy as a lonely divorcee. She uses Roy's admiration to feel good about herself when she's going through a rough patch in her life. It gives everyone an opinion of how women are always dependent on another person for their happiness. If the story had Christy's perspective, it could have provided a balance.
The performances of Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas are commendable. The sweet nothings are enjoyable in places. Malavika was subtle as Christy, while Mathew was good at portraying the role of a smitten teenager. Cinematographer Anend C Chandran and editor Manu Antony's work are in tandem with the mood of the film.
The film explores the impact of this relationship on both characters, with Christy being depicted as a lonely divorcee who finds solace in Roy's companionship. The film is inspired by a true story. The film's narrative also stresses the importance of boundaries, as Roy tends to go overboard when it comes to confessing his love for her. Christy could have been much more had it showcased a balanced portrayal of both sides.
2.5 out of 5 stars for Christy. Published By: shweta keshri Published On: Feb 17, 2023 --- ENDS --- ALSO READ | Malavika Mohanan says 'don't want to be only typecast as star hero's love interest' | Exclusive

It’s recess at a small school in Nigeria and the boys are kicking around an empty water bottle in an improvised game of soccer. Except for one. Anthony Madu on the far side of the playground, is performing a private ballet. One of his classmates asks, “Why is he dancing like a girl?”
Anthony is dancing because that is who he is. When he is not dancing, his body is shy, uncertain. When he dances, he is sure, elegant, graceful. “Madu” is a documentary about what happened when a brief 2020 video of Anthony dancing barefoot in the rain went viral, leading to an invitation to study in a seven-year program at an elite British ballet academy. As the film begins, he is packing and saying his farewells. He receives his passport, where he is described as a “child student.” His mother is proud, happy for him, but painfully aware of how much she will miss him. We see him silhouetted against the train window, an unfamiliar landscape outside. When he arrives, he calls home and like all mothers, her first question is “Have you eaten?”
In their call a few weeks later, she says Anthony is adopting a British accent and his brother says, “You’re speaking like a white person.” We see the poignance of Anthony’s missing his family but feeling that the shared dedication to dance is a different kind of home, equally precious. “Home is a place where you feel like you belong,” he says, meaning the world of dance, but then he says home is also where your family is.
We might have expected that Anthony might feel isolated or even bullied for being from another country and culture, but his classmates are all friendly and inclusive. Some of the film’s sweetest moments are watching Anthony completely comfortable as he is laughing with his friends or hugging them goodbye as they leave for summer break. Some of the most touching are when we see his parents watching his performance as one of the stars of the end of school year production, via FaceTime, in Nigeria.
The entering class is told they are the select few of over 500 who applied. But this is not like the many other dance films about demanding teachers. The presence of the documentary cameras may be a factor, but the kindness, sensitivity, and compassion of everyone Anthony meets is so pervasive that it is clearly the culture of the community around him. A teacher tells the students that a warmth in the muscles during practice is good, but if it ever burns, they should stop. And when a serious health issue arises, the school and the doctors are sympathetic and supportive.
The style of the documentary is “fly on the wall.” Filmmakers Matthew Ogens and Joel Kachi Benson include occasional interviews with Anthony and his parents but no talking head experts. Cinematography by Charlie Goodger and Motheo Moeng is intimate and lyrical, with contemplative music that contrasts with the classical pieces accompanying the dance lessons and performance. An opening scene shows us Anthony dancing near a fire, his movements in the flickering light showing the fiery spirit that impels him. Near the end, he is on the beach, wading into endless water stretching all the way to the horizon, indicating the larger, more centered sense of himself and his passion for ballet made possible by access to teachers and other dancers, and a sense of possibility. But, as with the boys at the center of documentaries like “ Hoop Dreams ” and “ The Wolfpack ,” the focus on those who are too young to have a nuanced understanding of what is happening to and around them can make us feel both unsatisfyingly removed and uncomfortably intrusive. Maybe the only solution is to require any documentary about those who are underage to be locked away and then brought out again when the children are old enough to watch it and make up their minds about whether they are willing to have it seen.
Anthony’s eloquence is in his movement. A telling moment is his assignment to create a dance performance. Even to an untrained eye, his extraordinary gifts are unmistakable. His grace, balance, and control are exceptional, and his leaps are breathtaking. The teachers who are evaluating him are warmly encouraging, complimenting his love of movement. They gently ask whether he had a story in mind. When he says no, they suggest he try to imagine a narrative. Given the complexity and near-fairy tale improbability of his real-life story, it is not surprising that Anthony is comfortable taking a break from plot to revel in the pure abstraction of movement. With this documentary, we can appreciate his story, and his relevé and pirouette.
