Finding a training contract is hard enough without a bad covering letter letting you down. You might think your CV is the star of the show, but without a good supporting act, your application will flop.

Even in these days of fancy online applications, many firms will still ask for a covering letter to accompany your application. You’ll also definitely need a covering letter if you’re planning on applying to high street and medium-sized firms.

Covering letters do much more than just ‘cover’ your CV…

A good covering letter will give a voice to the person behind your CV. It’s your chance to highlight the impressive parts of your CV, smoothly convince the employer that you’d be a fantastic trainee, and tell them what it is that makes you jig with excitement at the thought of working for their firm.

Seeing as drafting letters will be part of your responsibility as a trainee, a poorly constructed, ineffectual covering letter, riddled with mistakes, won’t exactly set a good example.

Before you put pen to paper…

For instance, you might want to use your vacation work as an example to demonstrate your interpersonal skills or your commercial awareness.

Say when you’re available for interview and cover any practical issues they ask about (e.g. what your salary expectations are). Be positive: “I’m looking forward to your reply.”

You should end the letter “Yours sincerely” if it’s being sent to a named person; if you haven’t managed to find out a name then use “Yours faithfully”, followed by your name (obviously!).

Heading into your training contract applications, strong academic records and relevant work experience are a great start. However, learning to sell your unique experiences is just as important.

How To Apply For A Training Contract

To apply for a training contract, you will need to identify the law firms that you want to submit an application to. You will need to work out what kind of law firms you want to apply to. For example, are you interested in commercial law or criminal law? Do you want to work for a city firm or a regional law firm?

You will need to do your research. Once you have chosen which law firms you want to apply to, you need to treat every application like an individual project.

Usually, you will need to complete a training contract application form and submit a solicitor CV and covering letter to each law firm you apply to.

How Many Should I Apply For?

Five to ten law firm training contract applications are recommended. If you try to apply with too many firms, you risk missing deadlines trying to complete them all. If you only apply to one firm, you risk having no other law firms to fall back on if your application is rejected. You need to apply to just enough law firms, but not too many.

How Competitive Are Training Contracts?

It is no secret that securing a training contract is a difficult process. The odds vary massively between firms. However, at the top end of the scale, at elite US or Magic Circle law firms, you could be roughly looking at a success rate of anything between 20% and 5%. 

Your odds are significantly higher based on a number of criteria, however, including the university you have studied at or the grade you have achieved (e.g. a 1 st compared to a 2:1). 

Which Firms Should I Apply To?

Based on the competitive point above, it is natural to want to apply to a number of different law firms for a training contract. Estimates vary widely between aspiring lawyers, though many will aim to send off somewhere between 5 and 15 applications.

You also need to consider which actual firms pique your interest. Shortlisting firms to apply to can be based on a number of factors, including:

  • Practice area specialism
  • Law school support (whether firms will cover your fees for the PGDL and SQE / LPC if relevant – plus the provision of a maintenance grant to live on during that time period).
  • Firm culture
  • Working hours  
  • Number of training contracts offered per year
  • Any particular benefits/perks .

Who Is Eligible To Apply For Training Contracts?

Eligibility for training contract and vacation scheme applications will vary for each firm. The only way to be sure is to check on each firm’s individual website. If the information is not clear at that stage, feel free to drop an email to the firm’s recruitment team.

Training Contract Deadlines

Each firm sets their own deadlines for training contracts. Most aspiring lawyers will be applying to vacation schemes in the hopes of receiving a training contract at the end of the scheme, but others will submit ‘direct’ training contract applications. These two paths will usually have different deadlines.

Broadly speaking, training contract and vacation scheme application cycles roughly align with the first term of the academic year – you’ll probably be busiest with applications between September and November.

It is also worth noting that some firms deal with applications on a ‘rolling’ basis – meaning they will be accepted or rejected as they come in. Prioritise these applications first.

Training Contract CV

Not all training contract applications require a CV. Those that do will often use them as a key part of the application process, and so it is important to refine yours as much as possible. These are a few key elements of a solicitor CV to consider:

Formalities 

Standing out in your CV does not mean being overly outrageous in your choices of formatting. Stick to safe fonts such as Times New Roman, basic colours and adequate line spacing and borders. Overall, your text itself should do the talking when it comes to your individuality. 

In terms of length, most people can adequately fit their relevant experience onto one side of A4. Aim to stick to one side of A4. 

While not compulsory, it can really help your CV to stand out if you are able to include a few personalised lines at the top of the page providing a broad overview of who you are. This could include your current educational institution, a handful of concise, work experience examples, a few adjectives best encapsulating your character or personality, and a particular area of passion within the legal sector. Keep it short, concise, and relevant.

Many training contract applicants are students or recent graduates. As a result, you are unlikely to have amassed a huge catalogue of work experience. Instead, your educational achievements are likely to shine through the most. Provide details of your grades (anything from GCSE or age 16 onwards is often recommended), as well as predicted grades for university study if you have not yet graduated. 

Not all applicants will have relevant legal work experience at this stage. If you do, then you should certainly include it. If not, use your unique experiences to your advantage. Other easy ways to gain experience with some relevance to law include becoming a brand ambassador. The Lawyer Portal has a shared brand ambassador scheme with law firm Bird & Bird. You can also look out for online virtual work experience programmes.

For each piece of work experience, include the name of the organisation, the name of your specific role, the tasks involved in this role, and the start and end dates. Order your work experience by relevance – the best at the top, then work your way downwards.

Training Contract Cover Letter

Tailor your letter for each firm .

A small number of firms will ask for cover letters . This is an excellent chance to personalise your application, since covering letter for law firms are essentially an opportunity to link your personal experiences and demonstrate how these are closely aligned.  For this reason, cover letters need to be very closely tailored to the firm itself.

Law Cover Letter Format

There is no set structure or format for a covering letter for a law firm, but many will choose to follow some of the following guidelines:

  • Stick to one A4 side
  • Open the document as you would a letter (with the firm’s name and address, followed by ‘Dear [Insert Firm Name]’, etc.)
  • Introduce yourself – your background, how you came to discover the legal industry, etc.
  • Hone in on your experience and passion in the legal sector
  • Focus intensely on the specifics of the firm you are applying to – why does it appeal to you? What are some recent deals they have worked on that interest you? 

Training Contract Application Questions

The vast majority of applications will feature a handful of boxes asking you specific questions, which you will need to answer in a paragraph or two. Common questions include:

  • What interests you about becoming a solicitor?
  • Why are you specifically interested in this firm?
  • Do you have a particular practice area that interests you?
  • Tell us about a recent news story that you think could affect our firm’s work.

The key point to add in terms of differentiating yourself at the interview stage is the fact that your abilities on paper (e.g. educational qualifications, work experience, etc.) have ticked a box. Whether via video call or face-to-face, interviews are your chance to really let your personality shine through. Make sure to come across as personable, engaged and genuinely passionate about participating in a training contract with this firm. Your interviewers may be your supervisors one day – they will also want to see if you will integrate well into the firm’s culture.

Every law firm has a different training contract application process, but you will find that many of the questions give you an opportunity to demonstrate what makes you different from other applicants. Some of the training contract questions might include:

Why do you want to be a lawyer?

If a training contract application asks this question, avoid being overly academic or focusing solely on legal theory. You need to demonstrate how your experiences relate to you wanting to become a lawyer. Make sure your answer is personal, talks about your skills, motivations and relevant experience . You should also cover your short- and long-term career goals.

How would you describe your personality?

A lot of law firms ask this question to assess your character. To answer this question, make sure you use the job specification to guide you. The job specification usually features the type of characteristics a law firm is looking for. Once you know what a law firm is looking for, you can be specific with your answers.

Give an example of a time you demonstrated a specific quality or personality trait. It is important that you can back up what you say when answering personality-focused questions.

Why do you think you are suited to a career with us?

To answer this question, you must do your research on the law firm(s) that you are applying to. Specifically, you should research the key practice area(s) of the law firm, their training program and their culture. You should answer in a natural and structured way.

Law firms are looking for clear communication so that when they first read your answer they can quickly see how you have linked your career aspirations with what they can offer you.

Discuss a news article that interests you.

This training contract application question is designed to assess your commercial understanding, motivation to join a firm and your analytical ability. For this question, you need to fully research the law firm(s) you are applying to for a training contract.

You will need to go beyond the law firm’s website with your research and look at the type of candidates a firm recruits, the skills and qualities the firm values in its people. You should research the firm’s clients, the sectors they operate in, its market position and its strategy.

Training Contract Offer

Once you’ve gone through all the steps of the recruitment process, you should hear back from the firm within a few days to a month on whether you were successful at gaining a place. So what do you do once you’ve received an offer?

It’s important to take some time to carefully consider your options. Evaluate the firm’s culture, values, and the opportunities they offer for professional growth . Consider reaching out to current or former trainees to gain insights into their experiences. If you have multiple offers, compare the benefits, such as practice areas, salaries, and training programs. Take into account your long-term career goals and how each offer aligns with them.

Once you have made your decision, promptly notify the firm of your acceptance and express your gratitude for the opportunity. Remember, this is just the beginning of your legal career, so make sure to start off on the right foot by making an informed decision.

Covering letters are usually sent with a CV as a form of training contract or vacation scheme application where the completion of an application form is not required.

However, some firms do request a covering letter as part of an application form.

In either case, a covering letter can make or break your application.

Where Can I Get A Covering Letter Template?

I am regularly asked for template covering letters for training contract and vacation scheme applications.

However, there is no one template that is right for everyone. There is also a high risk that any template provided will be used to guide the drafting of the substance of the content much too closely.

Instead, it’s better to work to a pre-determined structure (see below) and then draft the content of the letter from scratch each time.

How To Produce A Winning Covering Letter

Here are our tips on producing a winning training contract application covering letter:

  • Personalise Your Letters – address it to the actual person who is in charge of receiving trainee applications. Always telephone or email the firm to confirm who you should address your application to – don’t just rely on what is published as it may be out of date.
  • Include Your Address – your address goes at the top right of the letter and the addressee’s name and firm’s address goes below the last line of your details but on the left of the letter. The date goes below their address. There is no need for your name at the top as this appears at the bottom. You also don’t need to include your telephone number and email address as these will already be on your CV or elsewhere on the application form.
  • Presentation – covering letters should fit on one page of A4 paper and, in the rare cases where they are to be posted as opposed to emailed, be printed on good quality white or cream paper and typed in a common and professional-looking font such as Times New Roman or Arial.
  • Spelling & Grammar – check, check and check again – any spelling or grammar mistakes will usually see your application being filed in the big round filing tray marked ‘bin’ no matter how good a candidate you are.
  • Write Clearly – write in a simple, direct and concise manner – help the reader by getting your points across in a succinct manner.
  • Tailor Your Letter – tailor each letter to the specific firm you are writing to – this obviously takes more time than mass mailing the same letter but the time spent will be the difference between success and failure in most cases.

The Structure Of A Covering Letter

The body of a good covering letter would read along the following lines:

1. Why you are writing

Open the letter with why you are writing.

For example, you are writing to apply for a training contract with the firm commencing in September 2014.

Mention the advertisement if you are applying in response to one (but not necessary if the vacancy is a recurring annual vacancy that appears on the firm’s website or in one of the law firm directories).

2. Introduce yourself

A quick summary of what you are doing now or have done/achieved recently so as to give a quick snapshot.

For example, you are currently studying the LPC at the University of Law, having previously graduated with a 2:1 from the University of Hull.

3. Why that firm?

This is where you show that you are not just applying to firms in a scatter-gun fashion.

Avoid using generalisations here that can apply to many firms. For example, do not just say you are applying to XYZ LLP because it is a leading firm with a good reputation.

Instead, be more specific about appealing aspects of the firm and tell them why those things are important to you. This can still include a firms reputation in an area of law but they will want you to explain more specifically why that has influenced your decision to apply to them.

This is where you display the knowledge you have gained when researching the firm.

What is it specifically about the firm’s size, location, areas of law practised, training contract, etc, that has made you apply to them (and therefore ignore many other firms)?

Seek to back up your reasons and personalise them by mentioning how your work experience and other experiences and knowledge have helped you make an informed decision to apply specifically to them.

4. Why you?

Highlight a particular quality you have and/or competencies or achievements of yours that show you have what they are looking for (as discovered during your research).

Focus on those parts of your experience to date that might help persuade them that you are the right person for them.

The key with a covering letter is to avoid just repeating lots of things that are already on your CV or elsewhere on your application form.

Instead, briefly mention a couple of the highlights from your CV but tie this into some reasoning as to why you feel you would be a good fit for the firm.

5. Sign off professionally

Thank them for their time in considering your application, state your availability for interview and ask that they contact you with any queries.

Do not waffle or go overboard here by stressing your desire to work for the firm or saying you want to contribute to the firm’s future success.

These should be obvious given the care you have taken over your research and your application.

Help The Recruiter

Finally, as with all drafting in your applications, be sure to help the recruiter by writing in a clear and concise manner.

Use short sentences and paragraphs in order to ensure the points you are presenting do not get lost in a sea of words.

They will be assessing your writing skills when reading your application so ensure you give a good account of yourself.

All of the top legal firms offer training contracts to law graduates and to graduates from a non-law background. Completed over a two-year period, training contracts are well structured and offer huge opportunities. During your training contract, you gain many benefits including professional skills development, exposure to a range of legal activities and interesting clients, and a very high probability of continued employment once completed, the retention rate is over 80% in some firms). If you are looking for opportunities to fit around your other commitments, some firms offer part-time training contracts, but these usually take up to double the time as you will be spending less time per week working on your training contract. Training contracts are regulated by the Solicitor’s Regulatory Authority (SRA) .

Who can apply for a Training Contract?

To apply for a Training Contract, you must be studying law (UK LLB) or be doing another bachelor's degree followed by a law conversion (GDL). If you are a law (UK LLB) student, you are able to apply in the final year of your undergraduate degree or once you graduate. If you are not a law student, you can apply in the final year of your undergraduate degree, once you have a confirmed place on a law conversion or after you graduate and are completing a law conversion. Around 50% of training solicitors studied a non-law degree programme. 

If you have been working in other sectors and have recently decided on a career in law, don’t worry! Not everyone that ends up making it as an excellent lawyer is absolutely certain this is the path for them from the age of 18. Many firms welcome applications for training contracts from graduates who have studied and then worked in other areas first, for example, banking, publishing or the arts, but subsequently decide that a career in law is for them. Equally, graduates who decide to travel and work on language skills following graduation are also welcome.

How hard is it to get a Training Contract?

Training contracts are highly competitive. Each year there are usually around 30,000 students applying for 5,500 training contracts. Firms are also increasingly hiring for their training contracts through vacation scheme intake. Securing a vacation scheme, therefore, increases your chances of later on getting a training contract. 

Law students must complete a Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) to apply as a trainee solicitor. Non-law students must complete a law conversion course (GDL), many universities offer this course. 

The most important factors to give you the best chance at securing a training contract are:

When to apply for a Training Contract

If you’re studying law, you should aim to apply for training contracts in the penultimate year of your studies. If you’re a non-law student, you should plan to apply in the final year of your studies. In general, law firms look to fill their training contract placements two years in advance. 

If it’s too soon for you to apply for a law training contract, you should start researching vacation schemes. Most law firms use vacation schemes as the main recruitment source for training contracts and they recruit up to 90% of trainee solicitors from their vacation schemes.

Most commercial firms tend to interview law students in the September of their final year, though an increasing number of interviews take place earlier. Many candidates are already known to the firm if they took on a vacation scheme with them in their second year.

If a training contract offer is made, it will normally be for two years ahead, for example, an offer made in September 2022 is for a training contract that begins in September 2024. It’s vital to apply in good time and make sure your applications are received by the firms of your choice well in advance of the closing date. When are Training Contract application deadlines?

The application deadline for most training contracts is the 31st of July, although they may change at the last minute and some firms have earlier deadlines such as May or June. In general, we recommend you apply sooner rather than later. This is because some firms may recruit on a rolling basis while others may interview you before the deadline window has passed. Submitting an early application ensures you won’t miss out.

How to get a Training Contract

This section will discuss the many things you can do to increase the likelihood of securing a training contract. 

The first factor for you to consider is which training contracts suit your personality and interests best. There are many available, so it’s worth thinking about different factors that might influence which one suits your personality and interests. 

As an undergraduate law student, considering the wide range of training contract opportunities available can seem daunting. If you have decided to become a solicitor, you need to secure a training contract or legal work experience to complete your two-year compulsory period of training work for the SQE .

1. Practice areas

Practice areas are crucial to your decision in deciding which firm to apply for a training contract at. There’s a big difference between studying law and practising it, so consider which sectors are of interest to you and explore firms that specialise in this area.

Larger firms tend to cover a wide range of practice areas including corporate real estate, finance litigation, employment and tax. Spend some time doing research about the different departments within the firms you are applying to and learn more about it so you’re able to talk passionately about why a particular practice area interests you. 

2. Client base

Spend some time thinking about the type of clients you want to work for, and the relationships you can build with them. High-profile firms tend to have high-profile clients, especially Magic Circle firms .

On the other hand, you might be more interested in working for smaller clients, which, due to the smaller team, may give you more exposure to more senior members of the organisation. When working for a smaller firm, you are likely to gain a large amount of responsibility pretty quickly, so your input will be visible.

3. Culture and size

The culture and size of a firm are often impacted by the practice areas and client base they work with. Larger firms tend to advise global organisations and will employ thousands of staff meaning the social scene amongst trainees is particularly vibrant.

The work is complex, and contracts are high value meaning you work long hours in intense, high-energy environments. Instead, you might also want to consider a training contract with a boutique law firm famous for offering specialist advice in a particular area like IT or media. When considering culture, it’s worth contemplating the kind of work-life balance you want to achieve. Magic Circle law firms mean long hours, so although you will have some time for socialising, this tends to be with clients and colleagues. 

4. Location

Have a think about where you would like your training contract to be based. If you love city living, perhaps you are keen to pursue your career in a city and be remunerated with a generous salary. The largest firms are based in London, so there are plenty of opportunities there, as well as all the excitement that a capital city has to offer. However, London isn’t everyone’s first choice, so you might think about applying to a firm outside of London with more sociable working hours and a less pressurised environment.

5. Structure of Training Contracts

Training contracts are structured in different ways across different firms. Typically, you complete six-month placements in different departments across the two-year programme. Some firms choose to have shorter seats in more departments, whilst others place you in one seat for longer than six months. How to make your Training Contract application stand out 

After the initial application of a CV and cover letter along with potentially some application questions, you will be asked to attend an interview. Preparation is key to ensuring your interview stands out from all the others and to giving you the best chance at getting offered a training contract. 

1. Motivation

Those interviewing you want to know that you really want to be a lawyer and that you want to work with them in particular. This means you need to do your research on the specifics of that firm before.  Make sure you show knowledge of the work they do and have good reasons for wanting to work there. To display evidence of your motivation, this would be the time to dig deep and bring up any legal work experience you have done and any extra-curricular legal activity you did during your degree. If you’ve done a vacation scheme with the same firm, they are likely to bring that up, so make sure you can demonstrate how you profited from your time there. Think in advance about what you did well during that vacation scheme and areas on which you know you could improve. Self-awareness of your own strengths and weaknesses shows highly valued qualities.

2. Commercial awareness

If you are applying to work at a commercial law firm, then you need an idea of what actually goes on in the business. However, commercial awareness can seem like a maddeningly vague thing to grasp.

In essence, you need to understand the role that commercial law plays in the world and what factors affect it. Find out what areas of business the firm operates in, then start getting better acquainted with the goings-on in those areas while making sure you don’t get caught out with the jargon. 3. Competence

Law firms want to see the skills you possess beyond academics. Required competencies may vary a little, but most lawyers rely on things like communication, resilience, teamwork, persuasiveness, people skills, lateral thinking and creative problem-solving . Learn more about transferable skills . 

Try to have examples to hand of occasions when you have shown these sorts of skills. For example, they may want to know about a time you’ve been in a leadership position or worked in a team. Part-time work at university or society activity can come in useful, giving you a good bank of experience to draw from.

Finally, while keeping all of that in your head, remember to relax, if you can. They also want to get a sense of what it would be like to work with you, so remember to be punctual, polite and have a personality.

Although securing a training contract with a 2:2 or lower qualifications may be more difficult, it’s not impossible. Be sure to explain your circumstances and motivations for applying for the training contract in a standout cover letter that really displays what you can offer to the company. However, law firms are increasingly moving away from viewing a first or 2:1 as essential and are focusing more on transferable skills and experiences.

Can you become a solicitor without a Training Contract?

It isn’t necessary to get a training contract to become a solicitor. The other route to becoming a lawyer instead of the LPC (completing a training contract) is passing the SQE and completing two years of qualifying experience. The SQE is a series of examinations split into two parts. 

As a trainee solicitor, you do a variety of different jobs within the firm. This may include attending meetings with clients, going to court proceedings and running administrative tasks. You may also draft legal contracts and negotiations such as NDAs, contracts and submissions. However, as each firm is very different, the work performed may be entirely varied depending on which law firm you’re doing your training contract with.

Training contract seats 

Within your training contract, you work within different departments of the firm, called seats. Generally, you do either four six-month seats or six four-month seats throughout the course of your training contract, but this is dependent on the law firm. 

Training contract secondments

Training contract secondments are periods of around 6 months during a training contract where a trainee solicitor temporarily moves to another department or company. At some law firms, there is an option to do your secondment abroad. This provides an opportunity to develop your experience in the industry while also experiencing a new place. Secondments are different to seats as seats are the different departments you’ll work in throughout your training contract where as a secondment is a temporary time spent working for a different company or department. 

Professional skills courses

The professional skills course (PSC) is the final compulsory aspect of training to be a solicitor. It consists of three compulsory core modules which take 48 hours over 8 days. They cover key areas of practice. Then there are four days, 24 hours, of elective module training to suit areas of interest. In total, this is 12 days, 72 hours, of training. 

Your first PSC is paid for by your firm. However, it should be noted that if you fail the course, you must pay to retake it. 

The pay for a training contract will depend on the firm you are working for as well as where it’s located. You generally earn a minimum of £21,000 per year outside of London and a minimum of £24,000 inside London. However, the salary can be as high as £50,000. 

The majority of training contracts finish with a job offer at the end and you as a qualified solicitor. Once you qualify, you take on more responsibility and increase your client contact. For lots of aspiring solicitors, the end goal is to become a partner. Many firms are owned and run by a group of partners who are responsible for bringing in new work, handling clients and managing the firm’s direction. Partnership is not for everyone though. Many solicitors stay as in-house lawyers for companies and charities or remain working as senior assistants.

When applying for a training contract or vacation scheme, your covering letter may be the first part of your application a law firm considers.

Your covering letter creates a powerful first impression, so make it easy for the recruiter to see that you have strong potential as a lawyer.

Many law graduate jobs at solicitors’ firms in the UK will ask you to apply for a training contract with a covering letter. Read this advice from recruiters at Slaughter and May, Cleary Gottlieb and Ince & Co, then follow our law cover letter template.

Some recruiters will want you to upload your covering letter as part of an online application form (such as Baker McKenzie and Jones Day), while others – usually smaller, high street law firms – will want you to send the letter alongside a CV (see our law CV example here ).

How to write a law cover letter tip #1: use the letter to explain why you want to be a solicitor at that particular law firm

A covering letter is a golden opportunity to explain your motivations for becoming a lawyer and for applying to that specific firm. ‘My advice is to use the cover letter to introduce yourself and to explain why you are applying to that firm,' says Janine Arnold, trainee recruitment manager at Slaughter and May . ‘Be sure to include any additional information that you feel is relevant to your application.’

If you’re uploading a covering letter as part of a larger application form you should avoid repeating examples you’ve used to answer questions on the form. Give as broad a picture of your skills and experience as possible and only repeat something if you think it is particularly significant to that law firm. Your covering letter is an introduction to get the recruiter’s attention – a sample of your potential, if you like – not your overall application.

‘A well-written, succinct, persuasive covering letter crafted by an aspiring trainee solicitor who has really thought about the firm stands out,’ says Nichola Rowe, director of legal human resources at Cleary Gottlieb . ‘Ask yourself: what sets this firm apart from other law firms and how do my individual skills and experiences marry with that firm?’.

How to write a law cover letter tip #2: how long should it be?

A covering letter should be a maximum of one page, with a font size of 11 or 12. Slaughter and May ’s Janine Arnold agrees: ‘A lengthy covering letter is not necessary; aim for it to be no longer than one side of A4.' Remember that some firms will give a word count for the covering letter they want you to write as part of your application. It's important to stick to that word count. It shows that you can write succinctly and follow instructions.

How to write a law cover letter tip #3: the format law firms like

The best law cover letter examples have a clear structure, such as:

1. The introduction to your cover letter

Introduce yourself, explain what stage you are at in your degree course (including the university you’re attending), state that you are applying for a training contract and where you read about the law firm. This should only be a sentence or two.

2. A paragraph on why you want to work at that law firm

The second paragraph should cover why you want to be a solicitor and why you want to work for that law firm in particular. Highlight any experiences you’ve had that have convinced you that you want to be a solicitor, such as vacation schemes, open days or insight days. You can even mention mini-pupillages – it will impress graduate recruiters if you’ve put the effort into comparing the two sides of the legal profession, as long as you have good reasons for picking a career as a solicitor (this could come up at interview).

Make it clear why you want to work in the particular area of law that the firm focuses on. For example, if it’s a commercial firm you’ll want to draw on any work experience you’ve had at other commercial firms. Show off your research about the firm by explaining your interest in their main legal practice areas – don’t just say ‘I am interested in shipping law’, for example, but provide evidence of that interest.

You might also want to mention the firm’s training structure. Some firms will have compulsory seats, in which case you’ll need to show an interest in those areas. If you’ve chosen a firm that doesn’t have compulsory seats, or has no seat structure at all (such as Jones Day for example), then you could explain why this appeals to you above a more defined training contract structure.

3. A paragraph highlighting why you're a good fit for the law firm

Next, you need to pitch yourself to the recruiter. Make it clear that you are suited to a career as a solicitor: highlight achievements that show you have the competencies the firm has asked for. Don’t just say ‘I have good communication skills’ – you need to mention an achievement that hinged on your use of those skills.

4. The ending to your law covering letter

Close by referring the recruiter to your CV or application and stating your availability for interview(s) or assessment centre(s).

'Covering letters should also explain any mitigating circumstances relating to exam results and to address any questions that you may reasonably expect to arise from your application, such as any gaps in your CV,’ explains Janine.

How to write a law cover letter tip #5: proofread your cover letter before you hit ‘send’

Once you’ve put your covering letter together, don’t be tempted to rush it off. Ask friends, family and your university careers adviser to check it. ‘There is no good excuse for spelling errors, especially when you’re applying for a job that requires scrupulous attention to detail,’ points out a legal recruitment adviser at Ince & Co . ‘The number of applications we receive that contain errors is surprising. Your application is all we’ve got to go on, so you owe it to yourself to ensure it’s not let down by something so easily avoidable.’

Remember that law firms will be judging your ability to communicate professionally with clients on the professionalism of your covering letter – you’re making a pitch, just like you would do as a practising lawyer.

Legal recruiters at major law firms read through hundreds, if not thousands, of applications from aspiring trainee solicitors each year and will only spend a minute or so reading your covering letter. Some recruiters say that they make their decision paragraph by paragraph – if you haven't impressed upon them that you would be a good fit for their firm halfway through the cover letter, they might not even read the rest. Your covering letter creates a powerful first impression, so make it easy for the recruiter to see that you have strong potential as a solicitor by following the tips above.

After completion of SQE 1 and 2, you’ll complete the SQE Plus. This course builds on the core legal modules previously covered and will be unique and fully tailored to the Firm, allowing you to gain further experience and critical skills specifically relevant to your career with White & Case.

Once you’ve completed the 11 months of study for the SQE 1, 2 and Plus, you’ll then complete your qualifying work experience (QWE) with the Firm by undertaking the two-year training contract.

The bolded sentence was most critical for us.  Many of our readers can source winning applications to glance at, but it’s hard to reverse-engineer an application.  You need to identify what the candidate did correctly and then apply the same principles to your own work.  If you copy whole sections, you risk getting caught by law firms’ anti-plagiarism software.  If you paraphrase, you risk sounding robotic and vanilla.  Graduate recruitment teams read thousands of training contract applications each year - do you really want yours to sound like someone else’s?

We have set out the original student answer first (so you can test yourself on the good/bad elements) followed by our insights. As this is Part 1, we have included only half of the application.

Training Contract Application - Memery Crystal

Question 1 - original application answer.

Tell us about something you have achieved or are passionate about apart from your academic studies.

“My most significant achievement is when I personally established an adaptive (disability skiing) sub-division of my ski school in Switzerland. It was important to me to do this because I felt that disabilities should not be a barrier to participation. I was solely responsible for fundraising, marketing, insurance and health and safety compliance. I enjoyed taking on this level of responsibility as I witnessed the beneficial impact it had on clients.

I led on fundraising by encouraging the team to run a half-marathon, which secured £2,000 for specialist equipment. We achieved this target 5 weeks in advance of our target, which meant we exceeded our fundraising by 37%.

I also led on the school’s marketing activities. I posted on disability forums and Facebook pages and had friends advertise on our behalf. Having worked as a volunteer instructor with Disability Snowsports UK, there were numerous clients who could vouch for my professionalism and the reputation of the school. I drew on this to demonstrate the professionalism of the school and the experience we could offer. I also reached out to a disability specific UK gym and built a relationship which allowed us to reach a wider number of people.

I was able to effectively build a rapport with accommodation and transportation providers in order to negotiate a significant discount for clients. The outcome was that the client could book with ease and secure a significant discount. The scheme continues to grow in attracting more people every year.”

Question 1 - Next City Lawyer Analysis

Paragraph 1.

This question invites a STAR-structured reply: situation, task, action, response/result. Hence, we would recommend splitting your answer in four paragraphs, where each paragraph clearly signposts the next section of the structure. You should also note that this question invites some flexibility: you may write on an achievement or a passion. Make sure you are clear in your answer as to what aspect of the question you wish to address/are addressing.

This candidate does well to introduce and contextualise his answer in the opening paragraph, and he also begins to explain why the example is of importance to the candidate. At times the applicant’s phrasing could have been improved; for example, the candidate could have rewritten the opening sentence to avoid the use of brackets which somewhat disrupts the flow of the answer. Furthermore, a little more background context would have been useful – the candidate could have mentioned what year this was in and why he was part of a ski school. Nevertheless, this paragraph is a decent representation of a ‘situation’-paragraph.

Paragraph 2

First, we would like to highlight that the candidate does extremely well regarding the specificity of his/her writing. We always recommend that candidates use facts and statistics to substantiate their examples and claims. These two sentences, written by the candidate, exemplify this advice when put into practice.

Secondly, however, these two sentences unfortunately do not fit into the overall answer. It is a little unclear as to how the preceding paragraph flows into this one, and what exactly the candidate is talking about. Remember to use introductory sentences and signposting to establish what each of your paragraphs is doing: you need to show whether it is extrapolating on a preceding paragraph or it is an entirely new point. If it is a new point, you will need to demonstrate this with an introductory word or phrase (e.g. ‘additionally’).

Finally, the candidate’s phraseology could be slightly improved. For example, ‘I led on fundraising’ is a slightly strange way of wording what the candidate meant. Make sure your writing is as clear as possible; it is always better to have simpler, shorter sentences than to have long-winded prose. You should remember that law firms will be assessing the quality of your written application, and so any spelling and grammatical errors will count against you, with no exceptions made for international students (see our free guide to getting a training contract as an international student here ).

Paragraph 3

This is a decent paragraph in which the candidate has done well to highlight the role played in expanding the service offering of the ski school he worked at. The candidate has also been able to subtly discuss some core competencies, such as entrepreneurship, which helps to augment the strength of their answer.

However, as with the preceding paragraph, the candidate’s phrasing is slightly cumbersome; for example, ‘I also led on the school’s marketing activities’, and ‘a disability specific UK gym’. Regarding the ‘disability specific’ paragraph, the candidate should be very careful in his phrasing. Though this merely comes across as clunky, when discussing more delicate matters, such clunky phrasing can be misconstrued as insensitive.

Finally, the applicant unnecessarily repeated some of his answer in consecutive paragraphs: ‘ numerous clients who could vouch for my professionalism and the reputation of the school. I drew on this to demonstrate the professionalism of the school and the experience we could offer ’ [emphasis added]. We would have recommended merging these two sentences together to cut down the number of words used, and to avoid unnecessary repetition.

Paragraph 4

Though this is a decent concluding/‘result’ paragraph, it suffers from not having some key terms/events defined or fully developed, respectively. Throughout this answer, the candidate should have made it explicitly clear what the task was regarding setting up this scheme.

While it is implied, the reader is never told exactly what the candidate had to set out and do. Furthermore, who were the clients? Notwithstanding the reader’s ability to infer who the clients may be, it would have been better, once again, for the candidate to be explicit.

Additionally, it would have been good to read about why the candidate was committed to securing a good discount for the clients – though it seems like an intuitive aim, it actually is something of note. Remember, law firms want to employ someone who is focused not only on the needs of the firm but also on the needs of the client.

Finally, the last sentence of the paragraph is a little weak – the candidate would have benefited from adding some statistics to evidence how the scheme has grown and, thereby, what their tangible value-add for his ski school was.

When writing your concluding/‘response/result’ paragraph, make sure you reread your answer to check that your conclusion makes sense in light of what you have written. Much like when you write a university essay, your conclusion should be a summary of what you have written and a distillation of any key findings as a result of your previous analysis. Though law firm applications might seem less formal than such academic assignments, your formality and the quality of your writing should be at the same level."

Question 2 - Original Application Answer

Based on what you know about Memery Crystal; please give 3 reasons why you have chosen us and 3 reasons why we should choose you?

“Clear sector focus

I am drawn to Memery Crystal’s commercial practice because I have a profound interest in businesses and the markets they operate in. I was excited to learn of Memery Crystal’s AIM focus because of the opportunity to learn about clients in different industries and jurisdictions.

I listened to Nick Alfillé discuss at the Open Day on the 19th November how the firm assists the client throughout their life-cycle and read with interest about Pelatro’s first acquisition following its admission to AIM in 2017 as evidence of this. I would add value to Memery Crystal because I would have a genuine interest in the firm’s clients.

Trainee experience

The Open Day reinforced my understanding of Memery Crystal as a firm where the trainee is afforded responsibility from the outset. In particular I am drawn to the one-to-one trainee experience and friendly and supportive approach.

I would add value to Memery Crystal because as a funds paralegal at [redacted law firm] I have been afforded responsibility by way of working as the sole paralegal on co-investments and drafting facility agreements. I have experience working as a team and individually to meet client expectations and contribute meaningfully to the firm.

Memery Crystal is an innovative firm as evidenced by its status as market leaders in medical cannabis and appointment as the exclusive legal partner to the Centre for Medical Cannabis. I am drawn to Memery Crystal because it stays ahead of the curve and is willing to embrace new industries.

I would add value to Memery Crystal because I recognise that innovation is important from a firm perspective and individually. For example, I regularly read around innovation strategies and have taken a keen interest in data sets and how they can assist law firms in the future.”

Question 2 - Next City Lawyer Analysis

Section 1 - clear sector focus.

The candidate has split his answer into three clear sections which helps maintain a logical structure and prevents them from missing any crucial information out.

This section picks out a unique aspect of the firm, namely the firm’s focus on companies listed on the AIM stock exchange. Some excellent evidence is provided by the candidate, notably mentioning by name the individual the candidate listened to on an open day and discussing a specific deal.

However, the candidate’s answer could do with improvement when it comes to depth. Most of this section is quite generic and does not go into the details of the firm’s sector focus nor the candidate’s interest in the mentioned sector. Given the limited word count, the applicant should have gone straight into the details of the firm’s sector focus, and then drawn out specifically why he is attracted to it.  This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your commercial awareness.  Remember, you must substantiate your claims by providing specific, personal evidence – it is not enough to just assert that you have a ‘genuine interest in the firm’s clients’, you must evidence that interest in the clients of the particular law firm that you are applying to.

Section 2 - Trainee experience

This is a stronger section – the candidate’s use of their previous work experience does well to evidence their claim of enjoying high levels of responsibility. However, much like the previous section, the student would have been better off spending a little more time unpacking what exactly is unique about Memery Crystal’s one-to-one trainee experience. For example, the candidate’s answer would have benefited from the addition of some specific examples or testimonies that evidenced the existence or effectiveness of such an experience.

Furthermore, though the discussion of the candidate’s work as a paralegal is fitting, the candidate could have been a little more specific when describing the kinds of work they completed. Again, you should be as specific as possible because facts and statistics add credence to your answer and better show off your abilities.

Finally, the last sentence of this section is a little ill-fitting with the paragraph it is in. The candidate has used this section to discuss how they work well alone with high levels of responsibility. Naturally, teamwork is essential to working in a law firm, and the candidate felt as though they needed to mention their ability to work in a team. However, the student has “tagged” this teamwork-sentence on and it does not serve the answer well. If needed, you should link your sentences together with introductory words – this will help you properly demonstrate your logical thought process to the reader. For example, the candidate could have written: “ In addition to working well in one-on-one settings, I also have extensive experience working in teams. [insert evidence here] ”.

Section 3 - Innovation

In light of the demanding question and the restrictive word limit, this is a good section. The candidate has used specific evidence to substantiate his claim that the firm is innovative and has linked that claim back to themselves and why he would fit the firm on those grounds.

The only point of improvement would be regarding the last paragraph: though the candidate gives some evidence for why innovation is important to him, it would have been better if the candidate provided some more personal and specific examples rather than generically stating ‘read around innovation strategies’. This is not a bad example, however, to write this, the candidate would have needed to specify what strategies they read about and why they are interested in those specific strategies. Indeed, the same comment goes for the statement “ how they can assist law firms in the future ” – instead of stating that, the candidate could have actually specified how such strategies and data sets can help law firms.  Again, this is another opportunity to showcase your commercial awareness by demonstrating that you understand what innovation actually means for law firms.
