Delta operates a variety of cabin classes on its aircraft, including economy, Premium Select, first class and Delta One seats.

Like most airlines, Delta will allow you to select your seat when booking, though the cost to do so and any upcharges will vary depending on the flight you’re taking. Those flying with families and wondering “does Delta seat families together?” are in luck. Delta does its best to seat families together, even after check-in.

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines charge the least for seat selection, while budget airlines Frontier and Spirit charge the most.

Delta sits in the middle, charging an average of $15-plus for each flight that you'd like to select a seat for. The cost will vary depending on the type of ticket you book with the airline — which we'll discuss next.

How much is seat selection on Delta Air Lines? That will depend on the ticket type you’re purchasing, be it basic economy, main cabin, Premium Select (premium economy), first class or Delta One.

Basic economy

Basic economy tickets have the most restrictions of any Delta ticket, and this extends to seat selection. Those who book basic economy tickets won't be able to select seats; instead, a seat will be randomly assigned to each passenger after check-in. This includes families and groups who are traveling together — expect to be split up when booking a basic economy ticket.

If you reserve a basic economy ticket, it’s possible to purchase a specific seat starting seven days before departure. Pricing for this varies by trip and is priced by segment.

Main cabin seating, also known as regular economy, includes complimentary seat selection. As a main cabin customer, you also have the option to purchase an upgrade to preferred or Delta Comfort Plus seats while remaining an economy class passenger.

You can also book upgraded economy tickets with additional seat selection perks:

Main Cabin Preferred: Main Cabin Preferred seats are functionally the same as regular main cabin seats. The difference lies in the seat location; Main Cabin Preferred seats are typically window and aisle seats nearer to the front of the plane, plus exit rows. These are the least expensive upgrades from standard economy seating.

Comfort Plus: When available, a Delta Comfort Plus ticket can be purchased directly while booking and the price will include seat selection. The cost to upgrade is higher than for a preferred seat in main cabin. Comfort Plus features more legroom than main cabin and offers passengers dedicated overhead bins. In addition, Comfort Plus guests will receive complimentary beer and wine on all domestic and short-haul international flights.

Main cabin passengers can also choose to upgrade to a Comfort Plus seat either before or after purchasing their ticket.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta’s version of premium economy, with larger seats and better recline, two free checked bags, earlier boarding and premium extras. Those who book Premium Select can choose any seat within the cabin for no additional fee.

Delta One and first class

Both first class and Delta One ticket holders can choose any seat within their cabin for free. These spacious seats come with two free checked bags, premium snacks and meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated flight attendant.

Main Cabin Preferred

When booking main cabin tickets, all four tiers of elite status members can select main cabin preferred seats for no additional charge.

Comfort Plus

Platinum and Diamond level elite members (the two highest tiers) can choose Comfort Plus seats shortly after ticketing for free. Mid-tier Gold members, meanwhile, will be able to select these seats starting 72 hours prior to departure, and low-level Silver members can pick from available Comfort Plus seats starting 24 hours before departure.

Delta elite members will also receive upgrades on select first class and Delta One flights depending on their elite status.

You can find Delta Air Lines seating without needing to book a flight. To do so, you’ll want to first search for your preferred route on Delta’s website. On the search results page, you’ll find a variety of flights from which to choose.

Each flight presents a seat map, which you can preview by selecting "Seats."

Once you’ve picked "Seats," you’ll be taken to a new page that shows a live preview of your aircraft’s seats.

You’ll also be able to view the seat map during the booking process. Once you’ve selected your flight, you’ll be taken to another page prompting you to pick a seat.

How do I choose my seat on Delta?

During booking

The process for reserving a Delta seat is fairly simple. As we mentioned above, you’ll be able to pick seats when booking your flights on the website; Delta will automatically prompt you to do so before checkout.

You may not be able to select seats on codeshare flights, which are operated by Delta’s partners . In this case, you’ll want to go directly to the other airlines’ webpage to manage your seat selection.

After booking

If you need to choose or alter your seat after you’ve booked your flight, go to "My Trips" on the Delta homepage.

If you’re logged in already, you’ll be able to view all the trips you have booked with Delta. You’ll find seat selection options by going down to the "Passenger Information" section.

Delta Air Lines

• Delta Air Lines offers different classes of travel, including Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Delta Comfort+, Domestic First Class, Premium Select, and Delta One.
• Basic Economy is the cheapest fare class with fewer amenities and seat selection restrictions. Main Cabin offers advanced seat selection and other benefits.
• Delta Comfort+ provides extra legroom, priority boarding, and dedicated overhead bin space. Domestic First Class offers spacious seats and additional amenities like fine dining and expedited baggage service.

Airline cabins have greatly expanded from the days of just economy and first class. Today, carriers have several different classes and different seats depending on the aircraft and travel distance. Delta Air Lines has adopted this over the years, with three classes on international flights and two on domestic or regional flights. Here's the breakdown.

Basic economy

Basic economy is technically a fare class, not a different cabin. Booking the cheapest ticket means no checked bags, one carry-on, no cancelations, and no free seat selection until check-in. Amenities vary by distance, so expect meals and snacks on long-haul routes, but just soft drinks on domestic services.

Your seat will vary significantly depending on where you're flying, but is the same as every other economy class passenger's seat. On regional CRJ-200/700/900, expect a tighter 2-2 layout, a standard 3-3 on the mainline narrowbodies like the 737, and 2-3-2 or 3-3-3 on widebodies like the A350 or A330neo.

Across the fleet, you can expect to get 30" to 32" of pitch on all planes, from the CRJ-900s to the A350-900s. It's certainly not the most, but it's in line with the competition as well.

Delta's Main Cabin experience is a step up from basic economy, as it allows you to choose where you sit in advance. You'll also get benefits like earlier boarding, free date changes, and advance seat assignments (except Preferred and Comfort+ seats).

For a small fee, passengers can also choose a Preferred Seat. These are typically located near the front of the plane, or in emergency exit rows, which offer more legroom.

Delta Comfort+

Booking a Delta Comfort+ ticket is where the added extras really start to kick in . For example, this class of travel gets you priority boarding. Furthermore, once you're onboard the aircraft, you'll have a seat that reclines up to 50% further than standard Main Cabin seats and offers up to four inches more legroom. Comfort+ seats are located at the right of the front of the economy cabin on all of Delta's aircraft.

Comfort+ passengers are allocated dedicated overhead bin space to keep their belongings conveniently close. This is always a welcome relief on busy flights when such space is at a premium. Early boarding also means skipping the dreaded gate check, allowing you to take your carry-on all the way to the destination.

On long-haul international flights, in addition to a sleep kit, passengers are also given an amenity kit. This contains useful items such as eyeshades, earplugs, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

Domestic First Class

On domestic aircraft, Delta offers two cabins: Main Cabin and First. Hard product-wise, the First cabin is laid out in a 2-2 configuration. Each seat features a leather recliner, and Delta's newest A321neos even have seat dividers and pod-style privacy guards.

You'll also benefit from accelerated check-in, security, and baggage handling. You'll have a spacious seat with up to eight inches of extra legroom, a pre-set pillow, an in-seat power port, and an entertainment screen of up to 13 inches. This is typically the best cabin on Delta's narrowbodies, although certain Boeing 757s are fitted with the luxurious Delta One product.

Complimentary drinks, snacks, and fine dining meal options are available on all flights, as well as more personalized service. On arrival at your destination, an expedited baggage service ensures that you get your luggage first. Particularly on longer hops, these various aspects can make first class worth the upgrade.

Delta Premium Select

Better known as premium economy, Premium Select is offered on Delta's widebodies, and got a perky upgrade in 2022 . The seats are fairly similar to the domestic first class seats, with leather recliners, 13" entertainment screens, and an adjustable legrest.

Fine dining meal options are served on premium flatware for an enhanced experience. You'll receive a complimentary Tumi amenity kit with Malin & Goetz travel essentials, socks, eyeshades, a hand cleansing towelette, and more. On long-haul flights, this can represent an excellent compromise for those who want more comfort than economy class without having to pay for lie-flat seats.

Sitting at the top of the hierarchy in terms of Delta's classes of travel, the top-tier service on international and select domestic long-haul flights is Delta One. The airline's flagship business class product has plenty of benefits on the ground, like access to Sky Clubs and priority access through check-in and security.

Onboard, you can stretch out on the 180-degree lie-flat seats, with a duvet and soft pillows, all enclosed in a pod with a door. The seat has been rated as one of the best in the US, and with solid service and meal selections out of its hubs, it has quickly become a fan favorite (assuming you can pick up the tab!).

Delta Air Lines started in 1925 as a crop dusting service but evolved to become one of the top airlines in the US. Having operated for longer than most others, it’s no surprise that it has racked up one of the most impressive aircraft fleets in the world. And its merger with other airlines like Delaware, Southern, and Chicago Airlines further gave the company more resources to grow.

By 2000, Delta had begun breaking records, carrying 120 million passengers across 221 cities that year and making over a billion dollars. Now, with flights to six continents comprising 129 countries and 596 cities available to Delta flights, the company is taking giant strides in its industry.

Because of Delta’s many aircraft models like the Airbuses, Boeings, Bombardiers, and Embraers, passengers need a way to preview the plane cabins before booking flights. This need led to the introduction of the Delta Airlines seating chart. Delta makes their aircraft layouts and seating arrangements public, helping passengers who aren’t familiar with the differences in cabin classes.

The best part is that passengers don’t need to book a flight before seeing the Delta Airlines seat selection preview. All they need is to check on the Delta website for their route, select the aircraft playing it, and view its seats. With the Delta seating chart, passengers can choose between the four cabins available in most Delta planes — Delta One and First Class, Premium Select, Basic Economy, and Main Cabin.

Delta Seat Selection: Overview

Basic economy.

The Basic Economy cabin is Delta’s offering for passengers looking to save some cash. From the Delta seat map, it is clear that this cabin offers the basics, cutting most luxuries to provide value for people who just want to get from point A to B. Some perks that passengers won’t get with the Basic Economy are the option of picking seats, changing plans, or requesting refunds.

Most passengers in this cabin merely use the Delta Airline seating chart to know what to expect in-flight, not to influence it. They also board last and won’t earn miles. However, these passengers can still enjoy complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, access to WiFi to book and check their flight’s status, in-flight entertainment, and messaging.

The Delta seats in the Main Cabin are comfortable and will suit passengers on international flights. The seats are often aisle and window seats and near exit rows. For an extra fee, the passengers can buy Main Cabin tickets and get more control over their flying experience.

Main Cabin passengers can manage their trips, choose their preferred Delta Airlines seating position before checking in, and enjoy a few extra perks. This section also serves complimentary snacks on flights longer than 250 miles and free meals for long-haul flights. Those flights also grant Main Cabin passage complimentary alcoholic beverages they would otherwise have paid for on shorter flights.

Premium Select

Delta plane seats in the Premium Select cabin have steeper recline angles, letting passengers feel more relaxed while traveling. They include adjustable footrests on most widebody aircraft in the company’s fleet, giving passengers more legroom. The passengers can also pre-select their seats after checking the Delta plane seating chart without paying extra.

The in-flight entertainment is also better, as the seatback screens are wider. Passengers in the cabin also get an amenity kit to make their journey smoother. The meals and drinks are complimentary.

Delta One and First Class

The occupants of Delta One and First Class enjoy Delta’s best amenities. They get to choose any seat at no extra cost and can expect direct aisle access every time. The Delta First class seats can recline fully to become a flatbed, and passengers get a pillow and blanket when they want to nap.

The Delta One seats guarantee privacy with a suite-style design, and the passengers get free assistance and access to all foods and drinks, thanks to the premium dining.

Preferred Seating   

Delta allows our most valued customers access to preferential advance seat assignments. This service is called Preferred Seating ("P" seats). Preferred Seating is offered on Delta and Delta Connection® flights, subject to availability.  

Please note : Select seats may be reassigned to passengers with certain categories of disability. A ticket must be issued prior to the assigning of a Preferred Seat (P seat). Preferred Seating is not eligible for passengers who purchased Basic Economy.

Complimentary Preferred Seating

Except with respect to Basic Economy fares*, Preferred Seats are complimentary any time after ticketing occurs for:

• Passengers that have purchased full Y, B and M fares
• Diamond Medallion (DM)
• Platinum Medallion (PM)

Preferred seats are shown on the seat map by a P indicator, following a row number. Preferred seats may include desirable window, aisle and exit row seats**. The SkyMiles or other Frequent Flyer number must appear in the PNR (OSI or SSRFQTV) and reflect the member's qualifying status as listed above.

Preferred Seating for Purchase

Delta Let Me Buy A Seat Assignment On A Basic Economy Ticket

Eventually, every airline started to offer a ticket class with more restrictions and less flexibility. Airlines have made tweaks here and there but as things stand now, Delta Airlines sells one of the most restrictive basic economy tickets out there.

Here’s what to expect when buying the cheapest ticket Delta has to offer:

With Basic Economy please remember refunds and upgrades are not available at any time. Basic Economy is best for those traveling by themselves with firm travel plans. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the restrictions so you know if Basic Economy is right for you.

Delta makes sure you know you won’t get an assigned seat until after check-in. That’s exactly what we experienced the one time we’ve flown in Delta basic economy .

Call me a glutton for punishment or just plain cheap, but I booked another Delta basic economy ticket for a flight to Atlanta. I was traveling solo for a quick weekend and the price difference was enough to make me accept the restrictions.

I pulled up the Delta app just to make sure I hadn’t been logged out during an iOS upgrade. When I opened the app, I checked my flight.

While I was still 23 hours from check-in, the “Purchase Seat” tab was activated. Out of curiosity, I tapped the button.

There are 30 open seats on the flight. However, most of them are in first class or Comfort+ seats which are unattainable for an upgrade from my Basic Economy fare.

However, at the back of the plane, there are several available seats. 10 middle seats and one window to be exact. I took that to mean that I had more than a 90% chance of getting a middle seat on this flight.

I clicked on the single window seat and found that Delta would let me purchase it for $14.

Yes, I only have 44 SkyMiles in my account. I view that as an accomplishment. 🙂

I paid $14 for the seat at the back of the plane. Since I have Delta as my airline of choice on my AMEX Platinum Card, I’ll get the money back as part of the Airline Fee Reimbursement.

What was most surprising to me was that I was offered a seat assignment when booking a Basic Economy fare. Everything on Delta’s website and past experiences indicated that I wouldn’t get a seat assignment until at the gate. I’ve never had the option to pick a seat, even for a price.

We rarely book Basic Economy fares so I don’t know if this happens regularly or if Delta is testing out selling seat assignments, even if all you get to pick is from are the worst seats on the plane.

I have read other experiences where some have said a week before they have been able to buy a seat.

I’ve seen some reports of the same 1-week timeframe but it’s not an official program.

I’ll be traveling in basic economy to Spain in December. Although at first I wasn’t allowed to select a seat in any of the four segments, somehow I was later able to select a seat for the two international legs.

“I paid $14 for the seat at the back of the plane. Since I have Delta as my airline of choice on my AMEX Platinum Card, I’ll get the money back as part of the Airline Fee Reimbursement.”

What is this fee reimbursement thing? I have a Delta Gold Amex – is this something I can access by making Delta my airline of choice?

The AMEX Platinum Card, which earns Membership Rewards points, has an airline fee reimbursement credit as a perk. The Delta AMEX cards, which earn Delta SkyMiles, do not have such a credit.

I usually travel Basic Economy (I’m military so I don’t pay for extras) but never pay for seat. They want you to pay for it, but all times I do check in almost last min since worst seats are given first. Or simply don’t and go to the counter and smile to agent and proceed to ask if there’s any “good” seat available and I can tell 100% I get decent seats for free. I know Delta is very restrictive with free upgrades but I don’t fight for that as soon I get a good seat (of course NEVER middle seat).

As a mom of three, I'm no stranger to the ins and outs of flying with family .

I know how to disassemble and reassemble my double stroller with ninja-level precision so it will fit through the baggage scanner at security. I also throw screen time rules out the window on travel days. Most importantly, I don't take any chances when it comes to getting my family's seats together when we fly.

Because I know how turbulent flying with kids can be, I happily gave up my seat on a recent solo flight when a father asked if I would switch seats so he could sit with his young son.

I was also quick to say yes because he had a window seat a couple of rows in front of my own window seat. (Had he been in the middle seat, I might have needed an adult beverage thrown in to sweeten the deal, but I digress.)

The crux of the issue is that it can be costly and confusing to find seats together when traveling with young kids. Some parents assume they will automatically be seated with their kids. Others may end up separated from their families if they are rebooked due to a cancellation. Regardless of the reason, airlines are not legally required to seat families together.

In November 2022, the Department of Transportation began monitoring airline seating policies to determine if federal regulation was necessary regarding family seating.

After months of monitoring, the DOT launched an online dashboard that displays, among other things, which airlines guarantee free family seating. This is part of a larger initiative by the Biden administration to improve consumer protections in the airline industry.

So far, only three airlines – American Airlines , Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines – comply with the DOT's guideline that airlines guarantee "adjacent seats for children 13 and under and an accompanying adult at no additional cost for all fare types."

That doesn't mean you are completely out of luck in guaranteeing your family sits together if you are flying on another major airline. Here is a guide to each airline's family seating policy and tips for ensuring your family members can sit together on your next flight.

American Airlines

Like most major airlines, American allows you to choose your seats when booking or at any time leading up to your flight.

There is no fee to choose your seats if you book a first-class, business-class, premium economy or main cabin fare. However, you will have to pay a fee to choose your seats if you choose basic economy tickets — American's least expensive (and most restrictive) fare type.

If you're traveling with children under 15 on any fare type, American's system will detect that you are a family traveling together and automatically search for seats together if you don't choose them yourself. If adjacent seats are unavailable for your entire family, American guarantees children under 15 will be seated next to at least one adult.

It's important that you do everything in your power to choose seats for your entire family at the time of booking. This is the only way to guarantee your entire family will sit together during your flight.

To do this, American advises the following :

• Book your entire party's tickets in the same reservation.
• Book your tickets as early as possible, so there are more available seats to choose from.
• It's better to skip seat selection than to choose just a few seats or seats scattered throughout the cabin.

Alaska Airlines

To select your seats at the time of booking on an Alaska flight, you'll need to book either a first-class, premium or main-cabin ticket. Only a limited number of advance seating assignments are available to customers who purchase Alaska's Saver fare tickets.

If no advance seats are available, the seats will be assigned at the gate; this is not ideal for a family wishing to sit together.

The good news is that Alaska Airlines' family seating policy does guarantee that children under 14 will automatically be seated with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge, including on Saver fares. So, even if you can't find adjacent seats for your entire family, you can rest assured that your children won't be seated separately from an adult.

To guarantee your family sits together on an Alaska Airlines flight :

• Book as early as possible and reserve your family's seats together at the time of purchase.
• Book children on the same reservation as adults.
• Confirm seat selections made through third parties on Alaska Airlines' website or by speaking with a reservations agent by phone.
• If you cannot get reserved seats together with your family during booking, call an Alaska Airlines reservation agent to review available seating options.
• As a last resort, check in online exactly 24 hours before your flight, as this is when most unclaimed seats become available (does not apply to Saver fare seats, which are assigned at the gate on the day of departure).
• Arrive at the gate at least 60 minutes prior to your departure time and speak with a gate agent. Alaska does block a limited number of seats to accommodate families and other needs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Delta Air Lines

All but one of Delta's fare types allow you to select your seats when you purchase your tickets.

If you want your family to sit together, steer clear of Delta's basic economy fares because they do not include advanced seat selection. If you purchase first class, Comfort+ or main cabin tickets, you'll have the option to select your seats during the booking process.

Delta's has other tips for getting your family's seats together :

• Book children on the same reservation as the adults in your party.
• Confirm seat selections made through third parties by calling a Delta reservations agent or going online .
• If you cannot obtain seats together with your family, contact Delta by phone to review your options or, as a last resort, speak with a Delta gate agent at the airport.

Delta does try and seat family members together but only upon request.

Flight attendants will sometimes ask for volunteers to switch seats. The airline also blocks a handful of rows in the main economy cabin on most flights to accommodate groups and families. Still, there are no guarantees unless you reserve your family's seats together before arriving at the airport (preferably at the time of booking).

Frontier Airlines

Frontier's base fares can be alluring to budget-conscious flyers. However, you'll have to pay extra if you want the luxury of advanced seating assignments.

Luckily, Frontier updated its family seating policy to be in compliance with the DOT's recommendations and guarantees that children under age 14 will be seated automatically with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge.

Unless you have elite status with Frontier , seat selection fees run between $17 and $90 per passenger per flight segment. There are no fare types that include complimentary seat selection for non-elite members if you want your entire family to sit together.

However, you could potentially make up the extra cost by joining Frontier's Discount Den and choosing a Kids Fly Free flight .

Frontier also recommends that families:

• Book as early as possible and purchase advance seat reservations at the time of booking.
• Book children on the same reservation as adults in your party.
• If you book through a third party, visit Frontier's website as soon as possible to purchase advance seat selections.
• Check in as early as possible online or through Frontier's mobile app and Frontier will assign group seats together if any are available.
• If your family is not assigned seats together, speak with a gate agent for assistance.

JetBlue offers complimentary seat selection with all fare types except Blue Basic, meaning Blue and Blue Extra fares include free advance seat selection. However, for Blue Basic fares, there is a fee of between $5 and $40 each way to choose your seat more than 24 hours before departure (Seat selection is available for free at check-in).

With JetBlue's family seating policy , however, the airline guarantees that children ages 13 and younger will be seated next to at least one adult traveling with them on the same reservation without an additional fee. This applies to all fare types, including Blue Basic fares. At the time of booking, JetBlue's system will assign seats together for at least one accompanying parent as long as adjacent seats are still available when you book your flight.

Other tips from JetBlue :

• Book as early as possible for maximum seat selection availability.
• Confirm seat selections made through a third party on JetBlue's website.
• If you cannot obtain seats together at the time of booking, contact a JetBlue agent at check-in or talk to one at the gate. They will do their best to seat your family together.

JetBlue does its best to keep families together and blocks a limited number of rows until the day of travel for passengers with disabilities and unaccompanied minors . If any seats are available after accommodating these passengers, JetBlue may be able to use them to seat families together.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is the one airline on this list that does not assign seats in advance, so you cannot purchase a specific seat assignment ahead of time.

With Southwest's open seating policy , you will be assigned a boarding group (A, B or C) and a position within that boarding group (1 through 60-plus) at check-in. Essentially, A1 is the best boarding position and you'll have the most seating options available to you when you board the plane.

Because of this, the strategies for getting your family's seats together on a Southwest flight differ from other airlines.

Check in on time

To get as high of a boarding group as possible, you'll need to check in exactly (like, to the second) 24 hours prior to your flight. This should land your family in an A or B boarding group, and most of the time, you won't have an issue getting your family's seats together. You may have to venture to the back of the plane to find those seats, though.

Utilize family boarding

If you have a B or C boarding group and are traveling with a child 6 years old or younger, you will have the option to board between the A and B groups during "family boarding."

Southwest's policy states that up to two adults can board with a child age 6 or younger during family boarding. If you have more adults than this in your party, speak with a Southwest gate agent to determine your best strategy for finding seats together once on board.

Purchase EarlyBird Check-In or Upgraded Boarding

You can also purchase EarlyBird Check-In , which gives you the convenience of automatic check-in 36 hours before your flight. (Southwest's regular check-in process begins 24 hours prior to your flight.) This means you'll automatically receive an earlier boarding position and more available seats to choose from than if you'd done it yourself.

EarlyBird Check-In pricing starts at $15 per passenger per flight segment, and you must purchase it for everyone in your party. Depending on availability, you may also be able to purchase Upgraded Boarding at the gate for between $30 and $50 per person per flight segment to secure an A1-A15 boarding position.

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card holders can receive two EarlyBird Check-Ins per year, which can bring the total cost for your family down a bit. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card also has a benefit of four Upgraded Boardings per year.

Rapid Rewards A-List and A-List Preferred members (and those traveling on the same reservation) automatically receive a boarding position 36 hours prior to departure, though you will still need to check in within 24 hours of your flight to receive your boarding pass.

Buy a Business Select fare

Finally, you have the option to purchase a Business Select fare, which, among other perks, includes priority boarding in the A1-A15 group.

Speak with an agent

If you don't heed our advice and find yourself at the airport with a less-than-desirable boarding group, Southwest advises that you speak with a gate agent or flight attendant. They will see if any passengers are willing to move to accommodate your family if you aren't able to get seats together.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines keeps its family seating advice plain and simple: The only way to guarantee you'll be able to sit with your family is to purchase your seat assignments ahead of time.

Seat assignments start at $5 per person per segment and vary by route and seat location in the aircraft. You can purchase your seat assignment when you book your flight, during check-in or anytime in between. However, the earlier you choose the seats, the better chance your entire family will be able to sit together.

Spirit currently has no official family seating policy. It only states that it "can't guarantee that you'll sit with your friends and family" if you don't purchase seat assignments; it says that gate agents will work to provide adjacent seats for guests flying with children aged 13 and under whenever possible.

There are ways to save money when purchasing your seats, though. Spirit Saver$ Club members receive low fares and discounted prices for add-ons like bags and seats. There is an annual fee, but if you have a large family or plan on flying Spirit Airlines often, the cost may be less than purchasing seats for your entire group.

Speaking of frequent flying, members of Spirit's Free Spirit loyalty program at the Gold level receive, among other perks, free seat selection at the time of booking. Unlike Frontier's program, Spirit's elite status perks, such as seat selection, do not confer to other members on the reservation.

United Airlines

United is also among the few airlines committed to helping families sit together on flights. United's family seating policy guarantees families with children under age 12 in certain cabins can sit together for free, regardless of fare type.

Now, United's new "dynamic seat map feature" will enable passengers to book two seats together for travelers under 12 and an adult companion for free, including on basic economy fares.

You'll probably want to avoid basic economy on United if you want your party to stay together. United explicitly states on its website that it's not able to guarantee your entire party will be able to sit together if you purchase a basic economy fare and do not purchase advance seat assignments.

Here are a few more helpful tips for families flying United :

• Book your tickets as early as possible and reserve your family's seats together when booking.
• Confirm seat selections made through a third party.
• If only scattered seats are available at the time of booking, you are better off letting United's system automatically choose seats for you because it will attempt to seat families on the same reservation with unassigned seats together.
• If you do not select seats in advance, United's system will attempt to find adjoining seats for you and your children under 15 on the same reservation, regardless of fare type.
• If you cannot obtain seats together, arrive early at your departure gate and speak with a gate agent. They will ask for volunteers to move seats and help accommodate your family.

General tips

There is a lot of overlap with the guidance for getting your family's seats together on most U.S. airlines (with Southwest being the exception).

You want to do everything possible to:

• Book early and select seats when you book. Do not wait until the last minute to check your seat assignments.
• Avoid saver or basic fares because they often do not offer complimentary seat selection.
• Choose your family's seats when booking, whether it's included with your fare or you have to pay an additional fee.
• If you are unable to get your family's seats together at the time of booking, call the airline and speak with a reservations agent to determine the best course of action.
• Keep checking seat availability in the months and weeks leading up to your flight, especially in the final week before your trip and again 24 hours before your flight. These are the times when people make last-minute changes or elite flyers receive automatic seat upgrades, freeing up space on the seating map.
• If you arrive at the airport and still haven't been able to secure your family's seats together, politely ask a gate agent or flight attendant for help. You may still have the option to pay for an upgrade, or they can assist you by finding open seats. It may be too late to do anything official, but they'll be much more willing to help if you approach them with kindness.

Sometimes kind travelers will help parents who end up in a bind onboard, but there's no guarantee. Luckily, airlines are falling in line and making it easier for families traveling together to sit together.

Under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), airlines are required to provide certain seating accommodations to passengers with disabilities who self-identify as needing to sit in a certain seat. If you are a passenger with one of the disability-related needs listed below and self-identify as such to the airline, you may qualify for one of the following types of seating accommodations:

• Movable Aisle Armrest : If you use an aisle chair to access the aircraft, and cannot transfer readily over a fixed aisle armrest.
• Bulkhead Seat or Other Seat : If you are traveling with a service animal, that is best accommodated at a particular seat.
• Greater Leg Room : If you have a fused or immobilized leg and need a seat that better accommodates your disability, including an aisle seat or a bulkhead seat.
• A personal care attendant who performs a function that is not required to be performed by airline personnel, for example assisting you with eating;
• A reader if you are blind or visually impaired;

Southwest Airlines is preparing to launch overnight flights for the first time in its history.

After hinting at the change last year , the Dallas-based carrier plans to add overnight flights from Las Vegas and Hawaii, Chief Commercial Officer Ryan Green said at an air travel conference Wednesday. The airline still has a few technical and labor details to work out before the flights can begin, but it hopes to get them in the air in about two years, Green said.

Green added that he sees an opportunity for about 50 red-eye flights a day at Southwest.

Red eyes, so called for the appearance of travelers’ eyes after missing a night of sleep, are ubiquitous at most major airlines. Travelers book them for what are often cheaper fares than daytime flights. For travelers from the West Coast, they also offer the advantage of leaving after work and arriving on the East Coast the next day in time for a breakfast meeting.

And airlines like overnight flights because they can generate more revenue from an airplane that would otherwise sit idle at an airport until the next morning.

Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport boasted no fewer than 26 overnight flights departing after 9 p.m. on almost every U.S. airline on a random Thursday in March, data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Diio shows. These flights, which are typically over four hours, connect Sin City to cities such as Atlanta, Boston, New York and D.C.

Southwest is beloved by travelers for its quirkiness, all-economy seating with no seat assignments and free checked bags. What it is not known for is being on the forefront of travel technology. For most of its 50-plus years flying, Southwest could not offer anything more than daytime flights in the U.S. due to limits with its reservations system. That changed in 2014 when it began implementing a new, modern booking system from airline IT provider Amadeus to launch international flights. Overnight flights became possible in 2017 when the platform was fully adopted.

It took another six years before Southwest began selling tickets with overnight connections last July.

Southwest CEO Robert Jordan in November described the possibility of overnight flights at the airline as the latest “ evolution ” of its business model.

Cheap, easy growth

Southwest, like most airlines, is in a bind. Aviation supply chain issues mean many of the new planes it has ordered from Boeing are years behind schedule. Costs are also up thanks to inflation and new post-pandemic labor agreements.

Boeing’s issues have forced Southwest to cut its growth plans this year. Instead of 79 new 737 Max planes, it will only take around 46.

“We have to be maniacally focused on being efficient,” Green said, adding that the airline wants to grow but without “adding to the cost structure.”

Enter overnight flights.

Savanthi Syth, an airline analyst at investment bank Raymond James, said in an email that adding red-eye flights would allow Southwest to grow at less cost than buying new planes.

“In the Hawaii-mainland U.S. market, red-eye flight capabilities should enable more connections or just a better schedule than Southwest can offer today,” she added.

That’s good news for the many loyal Southwest fliers in, say, Dallas or Kansas City, Mo., whose only flight option home from Hawaii is to lose an entire day to travel.

Similarly, more flights from Las Vegas could help slow fare increases. The average U.S. domestic airfare from the city, not including added fees such as checked bags or seat assignments, was up 12 percent to $264.38 in the third quarter of last year compared with 2019, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data . Airfares were down 6 percent when adjusted for inflation.

“Southwest’s significant volume of red-eye flights will bring additional capacity to an already crowded Las Vegas market,” said Seth Miller, an airline analyst and editor of the PaxEx.Aero website. “Passengers should benefit as destination options expand and fares remain competitive.”

Children & Infant Travel

Age at the time of travel, how to add infant-in-arms to your ticket.

When you travel with a child under 2 years of age, you may choose to travel with the child on your lap (infant-in-arms) for free on all flights within the United States. Our step-by-step guide explains how to easily add an infant-in-arms to your ticket yourself.

• Go to My Trips
• Go to the "Special Service Requests" section and select “Open” under the Infant in Arms icon
• Click the "+" button next to “Request Infant in Arms” for the flight(s) the infant or child will be on
• Fill in the required information fields and click “Confirm”

Delta’s committed to providing safe travel for all — especially children traveling by themselves with our  unaccompanied minor program . For a $150 fee each way, up to 4 children between the ages of 5 to 14 will receive an employee escort and special amenities for a reliable and comfortable trip. Minors between the ages of 15 to 17 can use this program, per parent or guardian request.

• Children traveling as unaccompanied minors receive barcoded wristbands that track their journey 
• Parents or guardians can escort unaccompanied minors to the gate area through security
• Children have access to Delta Sky Zone at some airports, a kids-only lounge with video games, snacks and a secure area to hang out between flights
