His ways gave inspiration to all Indians. He was associated with Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Vallavbhai Patel in the formation of the Indian National Congress. Gandhiji initiated the boycott of foreign goods and the usage of indigenous products.

During the Quit India movement, he united all by the slogan Do or Die. Soon India achieved freedom under his leadership. Although he could not accept the partition. The central question emphasized by the paper is that whether in the 21 st century's globalized world the Gandhian message still has or could have any actuality in managing our century's real challenges such as terrorism or the deepening moral crisis of the humanity. In order to be able to do this, the paper will fi rst of all present, analyse and comment on the most important concepts I consider the Gandhian thought is based on such as satya (Truth), ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (as Gandhi loosely translated: holding on to truth, which in fact is the philosophy and practice of the non-violent resistance). I have to admit that in my paper I will consider Gandhi as a philosopher or a thinker even if he did not agree with me or even if it were hard to consider him a philosopher according to European traditions and European canon regarding philosophy. As we know, he personally declared that writing an academic text was beyond his power and he was not built for such kind of writings. Secondly, the paper will emphasize those aspects and concepts of the Gandhian thought which could give an answer to the core question of the paper, trying to prove that at least two of the presented concepts could be considered relevant and useful in our times, even if at fi rst impression all of these key concepts of the Gandhian thought seem to be a utopia and useless. It seems that Gandhi, through his ideas and thoughts, " is still alive " and is among us after more than 60 years of his death. It seems that we, all human beings, still have to learn from the ideas, from the writings and acts of the Mahatma.

FD: Gandhi understood that self-interest, whether in its individual or collective form, represents the basic category of liberal politics. He also realised that it is not something given to us by nature but has to be set in place through considerable effort. Since interest conceived as ownership was tied to the regime of private property, however, it could only have a marginal existence in a place like India, where property and so ownership had not yet come to define all social relations. People affectionately call him ‘Bapu’ and the ‘Father of the Nation’. He was shot dead in 1948 by the Hindu fanatic Nathuram Godse. Gandhiji’s life is a true inspiration for all of us.

Mr. Gandhi started his law practice. He went to South Africa in the course of a law suit. He saw the condition of the Indians living there. They were treated very badly by the white men. They were not allowed to travel in 1st class on the trains, also not allowed to enter certain localities, clubs, and so on. Once when Gandhiji was travelling in the 1st class compartment of the train, he was beaten and thrown out of the train. Then Mahatma decided to unite all Indians and started the Non-violence and Satyagrah Movement. In no time, the Movement picked up.

Mahatma Gandhi returned to India and joined Indian National Congress. He started the Non-violence, Non-cooperation Movements here also. He travelled all over India, especially the rural India to see the conditions of the poor.

Mahatma Gandhi started Satyagrah Movement to oppose the Rowlatt Act and there was the shoot-out at Jalian-Wala-Bagh. The Act was drawn after many people were killed. He then started the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movements. And finally, Gandhiji won freedom for us. India became free on 15th August, 1947. He is called as “Father of the Nation”. Unfortunately, Gandhiji was shot on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse.

Introduction:.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi was a politician, social activist, writer, and leader of the Indian national movement. He is a figure known all over the world. His name is a household word in India, rather, in all the world round. His creed of non-violence has placed him on the same par with Buddha, Sri Chaitanya, and Jesus Christ.

Family & Education:

Mahatma Gandhi was born in the small town of Porbandar in the Kathiwad state on October 2, 1869. His father Karamchand Gandhi was the prime minister of Rajkot State and his mother Putlibai was a pious lady. Her influence shaped the future life of Mahatma Gandhi.

He was sent to school at a very early age, but he was not a very bright student. After his Matriculation Examination, he went to England to study law and returned home as a barrister. He began to practice law in Bombay but he was not very successful.

Life in South Africa:

In 1893 Gandhiji went to South Africa in connection with a case. He found his own countrymen treated with contempt by the whites. Gandhiji started satyagraha against this color hated. It was a non-violent protest, yet hundreds were beaten up and thousands were sent to jail. But Gandhiji did not buzz an inch from his faith in truth and non-violence and at last, he succeeded in his mission. He was awarded the title of Mahatma.

Fight for India’s Independence:

In 1915 Gandhiji came back to India after twenty long years in South Africa. He joined the Indian National congress and championed the cause of India’s freedom movement. He asked people to unite for the cause of freedom. He used the weapons of truth and non-violence to fight against the mighty British.

The horrible massacre at Jalianwalabag in Punjab touched him and he resolved to face the brute force of the British Government with moral force. In 1920 he launched the Non-cooperation movement to oppose British rule in India.

He led the famous Dandi March on 12th March 1930. This march was meant to break the salt law. And as a result of this, the British rule in India had already started shaking and he had to go to London for a Round Table Conference in 1931. But this Conference proved abortive and the country was about to give a death blow to the foreign rule.

In 1942 Gandhiji launched his final bout for freedom. He started the ‘Quit India’ movement. At last, the British Government had to quit India in 1947, and India was declared a free country on August 15, 1947.

Social Works:

Mahatma Gandhi was a social activist who fought against the evils of society. He found the Satyagraha Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati river in Gujarat. He preached against untouchability and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He fought tirelessly for the rights of Harijans.

Conclusion:

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation was a generous, god-loving, and peace-loving person. But unfortunately, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30th January 1948 at the age of 78. To commemorate Gandhiji’s birth anniversary Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2. Gandhiji’s teachings and ideologies will continue to enlighten and encourage us in the future.

Mahatma Gandhi, a follower of non-violence and a messenger of truth, was born on 2nd October, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and he belonged to an affluent family. He was a good student with a shy nature. As he grew up, he went to England to study law and soon became a barrister. When he returned to India, he began practising law at the Bombay High Court.

Thereafter, he went to South Africa to practise law. However, he was not interested in the legal profession. He joined hands with the natives of that region and started a non-violent movement called Satyagraha, in order to fight against the oppression of the Europeans. Soon, he returned to India and joined the struggle for India’s Independence against the British.

Seeing the miserable plight of his fellow Indian brothers and sisters, he started the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement to revolt against British rule in India. He underwent a lot of suffering and made sacrifices to uproot the British from the Indian soil. He had a non-violent approach towards India’s fight for freedom from British rule.

Mahatma Gandhi was a noble soul who believed in simplicity. He propagated the use of Swadeshi (domestic) goods among the people and boycotted the use of foreign items. He was a secular preacher and treated people of different communities with equal respect. He used to wear simple clothes and encouraged the use of handspun fibres such as jute and khadi made with the help of the spinning wheel.

Finally, in May 1893, at the invitation of the great merchant of Porbandar, Sheth Abdullah, he reached South Africa.

In those days, the people of South Africa were living a life of slavery-like India. The government of South Africa had implemented a policy of such a color between black and white in South Africa. Mahatma Gandhi had to be humiliated a few times due to this policy. Sometimes his shoes were thrown from the train.

Once, he was thrown from the moving train due to an argument with the TC Master in the previous compartment. Unhappy and angry with such incidents, he started a movement against the government of South Africa.

There was a lot of support from the immigrant Indians and liberal Europeans In this movement. Because of this justice was given to the people. Finally, after succeeding in his objective, he returned native country.

Gandhi Travels to India

After coming to India, he wanted to know the state of his native country. In order to know the true form of India, Gandhiji traveled to every corner of India by third-class rail. After traveling, he saw the dreadful status of people in all corners.

Seeing this pathetic condition of Indians, his heart became distraught with compassion. To build a permanent residence, he built an ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati River near Ahmedabad. From 25 May 1915, he started living there.

Those days Indians were passing through a bad time. The British had captured Indians with slavery. Mahatma Gandhiji encouraged the Indian public to make India free from the British. Encouraged youth. Due to this, the freedom fighters plunged into the battle of independent ransom.

Gandhiji gave unique weapons like truth and non-violence in his hand. All the movements went on under the leadership of Gandhiji. All the people and prominent personalities took major participation in those movements. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s name also appears in it.

Non-Cooperation Movement:

This movement started by Gandhi was the biggest success in the history of India. Which gave a new direction to India’s independence. When the British rule greatly increased the oppression of Indians.

At the same time, laws imposing a lot of restrictions on Indians were implemented. Thousands of Indians were being arrested without any reason on that basis. Movements were started to stop this behavior.

This movement lasted from 1 August 1920 to 12 February 1922. But, after the Chauri-Chara scandal, Gandhiji had to stop this movement on 12 February 1922.

Satyagraha Movement:

It was also known as the salt movement. The British imposed many taxes on Indians. The British government imposed a heavy tax on making salt by Indians. To end this, Mahatma Gandhi started this movement.

Gandhiji took out a visit to Dandee to break the law made by the British. He himself made salt and also opposed the tax imposed on it. Lakhs and crores of Indians got tremendous support in this movement.

Quit India Movement:

The Quit India movement was started on 9 August 1942 at the time of the Second World War. This movement was started on 9 August 1942, exactly seven years after the Kakori incident. It was started by Mahatma Gandhi at the Mumbai session of the All India Congress Committee.

Through this, Gandhiji gave the slogan of ‘Quit India’, which the public got tremendous support. Gandhiji gave the slogan “do or die” to the public during this time.

But in this movement, on 9 August 1942, on this date, before coming out, all the members of the Congress Working Committee were arrested. Congress was declared an illegal entity.

Mahatma Gandhiji was arrested in the fort of Ahmednagar by the British. According to official figures, 60,229 people were arrested in this mass movement. While 1630 people were injured and 940 people were killed.

A large number of people started landing on the roads to protest against British Governance. Congress flags started spreading on all government buildings. Students and workers went on strike.

The farmers of Bengal started the struggle against the increase in tax. Due to such tremendous support, this movement was very successful. It helped a lot in shaking the foundation of the British.

Death of Gandhiji:

Gandhiji died on 30 January 1948. When Mahatma Gandhi was walking on the grounds of Birla House in Delhi. Nathuram Godse killed Bapu by killing three bullets.

When Manmohan Gandhi was taking his last breath. At that time, his words… Ram… such words came out.
