French For Beginners: 10 Tools To Help You Get Started
By: Author David Issokson

French for beginners: Ten useful tools to get started
This post is specifically targeted at French for beginners. If you are just starting out in learning French then you’ve come to the right place! We will outline specific suggestions on which resources to acquire and how to go about the learning process. At the bottom of the page we’ve provided links to 20 specific pages where you can get started learning French today. Keep reading!
I am a full-time online French teacher
First of all, who am I? My name is David Issokson and I am a full-time online French teacher. I was born and raised in the United States.
But, I’ve reach a very high level in French where French people think I’m French when I speak. I’ve used my talent in the French language to help hundreds of people reach their goals.
How long does it take to learn French?
I get the question: “How long does it take to learn French?” all the time. My quick and honest answer: “One human lifetime” .
Many students come to me with the idea that they can somehow learn French in 30 days or six months. These ideas are put in their heads but the marketing arms of companies such as Rosetta Stone, Pimselur and Babbel which offer software apps for learning French.
The truth of the matter is that NOBODY can learn a foreign language that fast! The whole concept of “Fluent in 3 Months” is a total FALLACY.
Learning a language is a lifelong process. Remember, “Rome ne s’est pas faite en un jour !” (Rome was not built over night.).
Your objective in your initial two years of learning should be to lay down a very solid foundation in grammar and vocabulary. That way you can spend the rest of your life building on your solid foundation.
In language learning there is always one more word to learn, so the the “task” is never really completed and you really never “reach” your goal. There’s just small amounts of improvement every day.
Initial materials to get started
All of that said, this next section will outline the initial materials I personally recommend to my students to get started. Some of the resources listed below are free and others require a purchase.
French pronunciation – reading rules
The single biggest “hump” or challenge facing anybody just starting out in learning French is the understanding and mastery of the reading rules and pronunciation.
This page on our site covers the French reading rules in detail.
French is not a phonetic language. If you don’t learn the reading rules in the very beginning of your studies you’ll forever be fumbling around and mispronouncing words.
I have known Camille at Frenchtoday.com for many years and have always recommended her courses and lessons to my students. This page on her site does an excellent job of teaching the basics of French pronunciation.
She does a great job showing how to pronounce the difficult vowel sounds as well as the infamous French -r. Camille also offers an entire course on French pronunciation . This page on our site also covers the French reading rules in detail.
Remember, if you fail to wrap your head around French pronunciation and reading rules, you’ll never learn French. In my private lessons I’ve helped a lot of people to get off to a very good start. Here are some testimonials for my private lessons .
Book list for the pure beginner
As a pure beginner, I’d suggest the following three books, all of which you can find on Amazon . These are the books that I actually use in my private lessons .
Again, these are the top-3 books for a pure newbie. This page on our site has a more complete list of books for learning French .
Complete French All-In-One
I consider Practice Makes Perfect Complete French All-In-One to be the Bible for all beginner students. You can use this book both on your own and with a teacher.
It has excellent coverage of basic vocabulary, verbs and grammar. The book’s explanations are excellent and it offers lots of exercises.
The All-In-One book is good for both self-study and used with a teacher. This is a must buy !
Discovering French Bleu
I have been using the high school textbook Discovering French Bleu by Valette-Valette since Day-1 of my teaching at the end of 2013.
This book will walk you through the basics of French in a very orderly and structured way. I like the slowness of the approach as the book doesn’t put too much on your plate at once. I also love the book’s readings.
I would definitely suggest to go through this book with a teacher and NOT alone!
Exercises in French Phonetics
Exercises in French Phonetics by Dr. Francis W. Nachtmann is a tiny $8 gem for learning French pronunciation. The book breaks down French pronunciation in a very methodical way and provides lots of exercises. The book does not come with a CD and is also best used with a teacher.
Free YouTube resources for the pure beginner
YouTube is loaded with videos for learning French. There are countless “online teachers” who provide videos with quality ranging all of the map!
That said, I’d like to bring your attention to the two channels which I consistently recommend to my students.
Easy French
The second best and must useful resource for French for beginners (and even advanced students) on YouTube is Easy French .
Easy Languages is a company that sends people out in the streets interviewing real people. All the videos are subtitled in both English and French.
Whether you’re a pure beginner or already have some French under your belt, these videos are a true gold mine for both ear training and learning French vocabulary and verbs, as well as aspects about French culture. Highly recommended!
Paid apps and courses
Lots of people think that they can learn French with an app such as Duolingo . The truth is that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to learn to speak a language fluently with any of these apps.
That said, they are very good for getting the ball rolling with the language learning process. This page on our site offers a comprehensive insight into the top-30 apps for learning French .
That said, we would like to make three recommendations for purchases you can make for apps to get started as a pure beginner:
À Moi Paris by Camille at FrenchToday
I have personally known Camille at Frenchtoday.com since 2016 and strongly recommend anything she offers. Camille’s flagship course for learning French is called À Moi Paris .
In her course, Camille teaches everything you’ll need to get started learning French including clear grammatical explanations, pronunciation tips and extensive vocabulary coverage. Highly recommended.
Pimselur French
Another course/app which you could purchase if you’re just getting started is Pimselur French . Pimselur is an audio course focused on helping people to master French pronunciation.
The “Pimsleur Method” is a scientifically proven audio method to help students pick up language by ear. I have suggested Pimsleur French to several of my students who’ve struggled with pronunciation and they’re reported back that it helped.
Rosetta Stone
Another well-known app for learning French which I’d recommend to pure beginners is Rosetta Stone French . Rosetta Stone is probably the most famous French learning app on the market today.
I think Rosetta Stone is very good for visual learners as it puts heavy emphasis on images and flash cards. Rosetta Stone also covers all the basic verb and vocabulary you’ll need to get started in your learning process.
Take French lessons with a teacher
If you’re just getting started, there’s only so much you can do on your own. This where an online tutor could help.
If you’ve learned other languages in the past and understand the “inner workings” of a language (verb conjugations, grammatical terms, etc.), then it might not be a good idea to get a teacher in the early stages.
That said, if you’re a pure beginner who’s never learned a language, you’d probably benefit from some guidance and direction.
Alliance Française
If you live in an urban area (New York, Los Angeles, etc.) and are looking for a teacher, why not consider the Alliance Française .
They are a global network and an affiliate of the French government that promotes French language and culture worldwide.
Many of my students have done very well with their teachers and classes at their local Alliance Française. In addition, you can meet and interact with native speakers at their cultural events and activities.
iTalki & Preply
Another popular option for finding an online teacher is to use either iTalki or Preply . These are sites where both native speakers and non-native speaking teachers can come online and offer their teaching services.
You’ll see that both sites offer hundreds of teachers offering their teaching services at very affordable prices.
I would just warn that not all teachers offer the same quality of lessons. Some speak English way too much and that ruins the experience.
Others refuse to type out new vocabulary words. So, my suggestion is to scrutinize the reviews very carefully and try to get a “free” trial lesson whenever possible. Then, if you like the teacher that’s when to pay for some lessons.
Where to go from here
I have already laid out several wonderful resources including books ( French All-In-One , courses ( À Moi Paris ) and software ( Pimselur ).
The following is a list of 20 pages on both our site where you can get off to a good start with your studies. Bonne chance ! (good luck!).
- French alphabet
- French numbers
- Guide to French accent marks
- Guide to regular verbs – present tense
- French greetings
- A/an, the (guide to articles)
- Subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)

Four Corners : Interactive French vocabulary games
Whether you teach Core French or French Immersion, brain breaks, and movement breaks are essential for every program and grade level. You have got to incorporate French Four Corners games into your French routines! Four Corners are interactive French vocabulary games that combine French vocabulary, movement, and interaction!
What is Four Corners?
Four Corners is a digital French game. You simply project a slide on your whiteboard. The slide has a question in the center. The slide is divided into four areas. Each area has a different potential answer.
Students see all of the potential answers and identify the one that resonates most with them.
They then get up and move to that corner.
Why are these interactive French vocabulary games awesome?
I LOVE these games for a bunch of reasons.
They are community-building French games
There’s this one in particular that I play with my students at the start of the school year or the new semester. My goal is for all of us to get to know each other more in a light-hearted manner.
Teach new French vocabulary or revise previously learned vocabulary
You can create games on any topic or theme you are learning in class. For example, if you are teaching a French food unit, you can introduce new vocabulary with a Food-themed four corners game.
Who can play these interactive French vocabulary games?
These games are ideal for middle or high school-aged students in Core French and/or French Immersion. Since there is visual support, beginner French students can for sure play these games.
Let’s dive into some potential themes
I spent several weekends creating these French vocabulary games for my classes. If you do not have the time or resources to do so, these are available for purchase in my TPT.
You are absolutely welcome to create your own!
Here are the themes I’ve created
La rentrée scolaire
Some of the questions are basic get-to-know-yous like “quelle est ta collation préférée?” and others are questions that will and should result in a class discussion like “what are the qualities of a good teacher” or “how do you feel about homework”.
I chose these types of questions because I truly believe that a classroom community requires transparency and communication.
If you teach intermediates, this is an ideal French vocabulary game for revision at the start of a new school year.
Les animaux + le comparatif
The theme of this French Four Corners game is les animaux!
This French game is the perfect way to review or learn about animals in French and get comfortable with the French comparative words of PLUS and MOINS .
French Hobbies, Pastimes, Activities Four Corners Game
The theme of this French Four Corners game is les passe-temps, les loisirs, les sports, et plus. !
This French game is the perfect way to review or learn or learn about vocabulary related to French hobbies, pastimes, sports, and more.
French Food Four Corners Game – La NOURRITURE
French summer-themed four corners game.
In this game, students will learn and/or review French summer and vacation vocabulary.
This game is great for French vacation units!

This is a great digital French resource about one of my favorite Francophone leaders, Angelique Kidjo. NBA mock draft 2024 roundup: Detroit Pistons will have homework to do if they win lottery
The Detroit Pistons ' historic losing season is mercifully over, which means it's time to check out some NBA mock drafts. It's a bit complicated right now, as the Pistons will be hiring a president of basketball operations to take over the franchise. We don't know the person's assessment of the roster or preferences in the draft.
We do know the new lead executive will have the flexibility of a guaranteed top-five pick in the 2024 NBA draft, which launched a new two-day format on June 26-27 .
The Pistons, for the second season in a row, finished with the league's worst record, giving them a 14% chance to win the May 12 lottery in Chicago. The Washington Wizards also have a 14% chance, and Portland, Charlotte and San Antonio each have at least a 10% chance.
This is deemed a weaker draft at the top, and much more wide open than usual, with no clear No. 1 prospect.
If the Pistons win the top pick for the second time in four seasons, here's a look at who they might take from numerous expert NBA mock drafts:
USA TODAY : Alex Sarr, PF/C, Perth (Australia)
Vitals: 7 feet 1, 216 pounds; turns 19 on Thursday.
Buzz: This draft lacks a superstar prospect according to the industry, but Sarr, from France, might have the highest ceiling due to his raw talent at his size, and movement skills.
Sarr spent this past season in Australia's top pro league, where he averaged 9.4 points on 52% shooting, 4.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists, one turnover and 1.5 blocks over 17.3 minutes per game in 27 games. He shot 29% on 3s (1.8 attempts per game) and 71% on free throws (2.6 attempts per game) as an 18-year-old.
Jeff Zillgitt , USA TODAY Sports' NBA expert: "A strong defender and shot-blocker who plays with force on both ends; has good hands, uses his body well and though he doesn’t have the prettiest shot, he gets it to go in."
TRENDING: Ranking Pistons roster from most-to-least likely to return for 2024-25 season
ESPN : Zaccharie Risacher, SF, JL Bourg (France)
Vitals: 6-8, 200; turned 19 on April 8.
Buzz: Risacher is another French teenager playing professionally overseas; he's in the LNB Élite, France's top league. He looks like a prototypical 3-and-D prospect, with movement shooting, long strides in transition and good instincts as an off-ball defender. Averaging 10.9 points and shooting 42.7% on 3s across 43 games this season in EuroCup and league play.
Jonathan Givony, ESPN draft expert: "The Pistons are the NBA's worst 3-point shooting team while ranking among the league's worst defenses, meaning they could very well be attracted to the combination of perimeter shooting, defensive versatility and youth Risacher offers. He's having an extremely productive season competing at a very high level of competition for Bourg, guarding every position from 1 to 4 while making 39% of his 3-pointers through 60 games, despite being in a late-season slump."
Bleacher Report : Sarr
Jonathan Wasserman, B/R draft expert: "They're gonna cast a wide net here at No. 1 because there is no consensus guy. To me, I think they take Sarr because he kinda has the best mix of balance of a high floor, a high upside, a decent fit with everything they have. I think he can play some power forward because of the perimeter skill set that he has flashed in Australia. He's got a decent looking catch-and-shoot 3-ball, he actually shot a really impressive clip on pull-ups, so he's got some perimeter skills. ... But obviously the draw to Sarr is his defensive upside; can get in his stance around the perimeter, really slide with guards and wings, and then be a rim protector. ... You look at him and see this monster defensive upside, you see this potential offensive versatility as a guy who could play the 4 next to Jalen Duren."
NAMES TO WATCH: 5 candidates Pistons could consider for president of basketball operations
CBS Sports : Risacher
Kyle Boone, CBS college basketball/NBA expert: "Risacher has struggled of late after starting the season hot, in particular cooling after showing improvement as a shooter. But as we sit here now I'd still project him to be the first pick because of his long-term upside. Wings at 6-9 who can handle and shoot with ease the way he can don't slip far."
Sporting News : Sarr
Kyle Irving, S/N NBA expert: "Even though the Pistons already have a bruising young center in Jalen Duren, there isn't enough talent on the roster to be drafting for fit. Sarr would give Detroit a high-energy rim protector with more length. The 7-foot center is an athletic and powerful shot-blocking big with budding offensive skills who held his own playing professionally in Australia's NBL overseas."
Fox Sports : Sarr
Jason McIntyre, Fox co-host of "The Herd" and sports betting analyst: "Sarr is another athletic big man from France with perimeter skills. No, he's not Wemby. Sarr only played 17 minutes per game in the NBL as an 18-year-old, but he projects as a Jaren Jackson-type talent at both ends."

Mysteries of the 2024 NFL Draft, grading past first-round QBs | Zero Blitz
Jason Fitz and Frank Schwab join forces to get their final thoughts on the 2024 NFL Draft in before it all kicks off on Thursday night. The duo start with the Denver Broncos' new uniforms and Fitz' strong thoughts on Arena football. There's a lot of hype around the quarterbacks in this year's draft, but Fitz and Frank provide a reality check by grading every first-round quarterback selected between 2018 and 2022, assigning only 3 As and 7 Fs (and having a very real conversation around Justin Herbert's grade). There are still a few big question marks in this year's draft that will have big ramifications, so Fitz and Frank go detective mode and discuss what the Washington Commanders will do at 2, the New England Patriots at 3, whether or not Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix will make it past Denver, the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders in the middle of the first round and if the Dallas Cowboys will make a move to address their biggest hole. The dynamic duo finish off the show by snake drafting the biggest draft busts of all time.

About 1 in 5 U.S. teens who’ve heard of ChatGPT have used it for schoolwork
Roughly one-in-five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. With a majority of teens having heard of ChatGPT, that amounts to 13% of all U.S. teens who have used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their schoolwork.
Teens in higher grade levels are particularly likely to have used the chatbot to help them with schoolwork. About one-quarter of 11th and 12th graders who have heard of ChatGPT say they have done this. This share drops to 17% among 9th and 10th graders and 12% among 7th and 8th graders.
There is no significant difference between teen boys and girls who have used ChatGPT in this way.
The introduction of ChatGPT last year has led to much discussion about its role in schools , especially whether schools should integrate the new technology into the classroom or ban it .
Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand American teens’ use and understanding of ChatGPT in the school setting.
The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, via Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.
This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.
Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and its methodology .
Teens’ awareness of ChatGPT
Overall, two-thirds of U.S. teens say they have heard of ChatGPT, including 23% who have heard a lot about it. But awareness varies by race and ethnicity, as well as by household income:
- 72% of White teens say they’ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT, compared with 63% of Hispanic teens and 56% of Black teens.
- 75% of teens living in households that make $75,000 or more annually have heard of ChatGPT. Much smaller shares in households with incomes between $30,000 and $74,999 (58%) and less than $30,000 (41%) say the same.
Teens who are more aware of ChatGPT are more likely to use it for schoolwork. Roughly a third of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT (36%) have used it for schoolwork, far higher than the 10% among those who have heard a little about it.
When do teens think it’s OK for students to use ChatGPT?
For teens, whether it is – or is not – acceptable for students to use ChatGPT depends on what it is being used for.
There is a fair amount of support for using the chatbot to explore a topic. Roughly seven-in-ten teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use when they are researching something new, while 13% say it is not acceptable.
However, there is much less support for using ChatGPT to do the work itself. Just one-in-five teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to write essays, while 57% say it is not acceptable. And 39% say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while a similar share of teens (36%) say it’s not acceptable.
Some teens are uncertain about whether it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks. Between 18% and 24% say they aren’t sure whether these are acceptable use cases for ChatGPT.
Those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are more likely than those who have only heard a little about it to say it’s acceptable to use the chatbot to research topics, solve math problems and write essays. For instance, 54% of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to solve math problems, compared with 32% among those who have heard a little about it.

Report: apple acquires french startup behind ai and computer vision technology.
Apple has reportedly acquired Datakalab, a Paris, France-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence compression and computer vision technology. According to French business magazine Challenges , the acquisition was finalized in December.
Datakalab described itself as “experts in low power, runtime efficient, and deep learning algorithms” that work on device.
On its LinkedIn page, Datakalab highlights “industry leading compression and adaptation to deploy embedded computer vision that is fast, cost-effective and precise.” Prior to the Apple acquisition had between 10 and 20 employees.
From Datakalab’s now-defunct website:
Datakalab is a French technology company that develops computer image analysis algorithms to measure flows in public space. The images are instantly transformed into anonymized statistical data processed locally in 100ms. Datakalab does not store any images or personal data and only keeps statistical data. Datakalab products are built according to the principle of “Privacy by Design”.
Datakalab teamed up with the French government in May 2020 to deploy AI tools into Paris transportation systems to check whether people were wearing face masks. The company also worked with Disney and other partners in the past .
While neither Apple nor DatakaLab have acknowledged the acquisition, Challenges says that the deal was reported to the European Commission this month. The report says that Datakalab’s two founders did not join Apple, but multiple other employees did make the jump. Datakalab also held multiple patents related to AI compression and vision technology.
The acquisition comes as Apple is expected to bring a suite of AI features to iOS 18 later this year. Datakalab also developed advanced vision-based technology, which could play a role in Apple’s Vision Pro ambitions into the future. The company’s advanced facial recognition technology could also contribute to things like Photos and Face ID.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that he spoke to his Iranian counterpart Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."
Four Filipino seamen were also on board the ship, according to the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers.
The department said it was working with its government, the ship owner, and the operator to release the captured seafarers.
On Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in a helicopter operation near the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported.
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said there were 25 crew members on board.
Japanese prime minister condemns Iran's attack on Israel
From CNN's Junko Ogura in Tokyo
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday said he "strongly condemns" Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel.
"(The attack) further aggravates the current situation in the Middle East. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn such an escalation," Kishida told reporters.
Kishida said Japan would continue diplomatic efforts to "prevent the situation from worsening and to calm the situation down," and "respond in cooperation with other countries."
Blinken calls British and German counterparts following Iran's attack on Israel
From CNN's Philip Wang
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his counterparts from the United Kingdom and Germany on Sunday following Iran's attack on Israel, according to readouts from the State Department.
All parties agreed "the importance of condemning Iran's attack in the strongest possible terms and preventing further escalation," the readout said.
Blinken earlier held phone calls with his counterparts from Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia , in which he emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the Middle East and of "a coordinated diplomatic response."
US forces destroyed more than 80 attack drones from Iran and Yemen, Central Command says
From CNN's Philip Wang
US forces intercepted more than 80 one-way attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles from Iran and Yemen during its attack on Israel, according to a statement from the Central Command.
The operation included destroying a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven drones on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, CENTCOM said.
"Iran's continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces," the statement added.
Israeli and Iranian ambassadors trade accusations during UN Security Council session
From Abel Alvarado in Atlanta
Israel and Iran’s United Nations ambassadors condemned each other’s actions during Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack on Israel.
Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said Iran "must be stopped before it drives the world to a point of no return, to a regional war that can escalate to a world war." Erdan accused Iran of seeking world domination and that its attack proved that Tehran "cares nothing, nothing for Islam or Muslims" before pulling out a tablet to show a video of Israel intercepting Iranian drones above Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Erdan called on the UN Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organization.
“Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."
Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said his country’s operation was "entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and recognized by international law."
Iravani said:
"This concluded action was necessary and proportionate," adding that the operation was “precise and only targeted military objectives” to reduce the potential of escalation and to prevent civilian harm. “Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," he said.
Tehran’s attack had been anticipated since a suspected Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria earlier this month.
Iravani added Iran has “no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region” but warned Iran will use its “inherent right to respond proportionately” should the US initiate a military operation against “Iran, its citizens or its security.”
Israeli war cabinet says it's ready to respond to Iran's attack but delays immediate action. Here's the latest
From CNN staff
The hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how Israel will respond to Iran’s missile and drone attack , an Israeli official said.
The cabinet is determined to respond — but has yet to decide on the timing and scope and the official said the military has been tasked with coming up with additional options for a response.
Separately, a senior Biden administration official told reporters that an Israeli official told the United States that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran.
CNN analyst Barak Ravid said Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot advocated for swift action, but US President Joe Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led to a decision to delay the response until the next day.
Here are the latest headlines:
- Retaliation is over, Iran told US: Iran privately messaged the United States that its retaliation against Israel had concluded, echoing what Tehran said publicly, according to a senior administration official. Late Saturday, Iran said its attack on Israel is a response to Israel's strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and "the matter can be deemed concluded." However, President Ebrahim Raisi said any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response,” according to Iran’s state news channel IRIB.
- United Nations response: UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a de-escalation of violence after Iran’s attack. Guterres said the United Nations and member countries have a “shared responsibility” to engage “all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.” He also called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. “Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” he said.
- G7 and others: Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in response to Iran's attack, the G7 nations said they would work together to "stabilize the situation" in the Middle East, according to a statement from Biden. Also, Jordan summoned Iran's ambassador in Amman on Sunday after it intercepted Iranian drones over the country.
- Meanwhile in Gaza: As thousands of Palestinians were turned away from returning to their homes in northern Gaza on Sunday, a 5-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, her mother said. Video showed a man carrying a 5-year-old girl named Sally Abu Laila, who was bleeding from her head, with people crowding around her in panic trying to cover her wound.
Also on Sunday:
- Israel decided to lift its restrictions on large gatherings and to reopen schools on Monday.
- The US Department of Homeland Security has not identified any “specific or credible threats” to the US since Iran attacked Israel.
Blinken calls Turkish, Egyptian, Jordanian and Saudi counterparts following Iran's attack
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday spoke with his counterparts in Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia following Iran's attacks in Israel, according to readouts from the State Department.
During his phone calls, Blinken emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the region and the importance of "a coordinated diplomatic response."
In his conversation with Jordan and Egypt, Blinken also underlined the significance of achieving an "enduring end to the crisis in Gaza."
Iran will be held responsible if any action is taken against the US or Israel, deputy ambassador warns
From CNN’s Abel Alvarado
The United States warned Iran against taking any action against the US or Israel during the UN Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel.
“Let me be clear, if Iran or its proxies take actions against the US or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible,” US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said Sunday.
The United States is “not seeking escalation, our actions have been purely defensive in nature,” adding that the “best way to prevent such escalation is an unambiguous condemnation of the council of Iran’s unprecedented large-scale attack,” he said.
The envoy reiterated US support for Israel and condemned Iran’s attack. “Iran’s intent was to cause significant damage and death in Israel,” Wood said.
Wood also said the UN Security Council had an “obligation to not let Iran’s actions go unanswered.”
“For far too long, Iran has flagrantly violated its international legal obligations,” he said before listing occasions Iran has violated UN Security Council resolutions and international law.
Wood accused Iran of being in a “broad sense complicit” of the October 7 attack on Israel by providing “significant funding and training for the military wing of Hamas.”
He added the US will explore "additional measures to hold Iran accountable here in the UN.”

‘It’s a Very Winnable Case’: Three Writers Dissect the Trump Trial
By David French , Mary McCord and Ken White
Mr. French is a Times columnist. Ms. McCord and Mr. White are former federal prosecutors.
David French, a Times columnist, hosted a written online conversation with the former federal prosecutors Mary McCord and Ken White to discuss and debate the Trump criminal trial in Manhattan and how, or if, the outcome will matter to voters.
David French: Before we start, just a quick refresher on the case. Donald Trump is charged with falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels, a porn film actress, to cover up a sexual relationship that Daniels said she had with Trump in 2006.
Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, claims that Trump falsely recorded reimbursements for the hush money payments as “legal expenses.” Falsifying business records is ordinarily only a misdemeanor, but the D.A. is claiming that Trump falsified records with the intent to commit other crimes or conceal other crimes, including state and federal campaign finance violations, state tax crimes and the falsification of other business records. If he falsified business records to aid in the commission of these other crimes, then Trump could be guilty of a felony.
When the case was filed, legal analysts from across the political spectrum voiced concern about the case, mainly on legal grounds. I have expressed my own doubts about the case. Now that the trial is underway, what’s your assessment of the case today?
Ken White: We know a lot more now about the D.A.’s theory of the case than we did before. There was a lot of speculation about whether the predicate crime — the one Trump was promoting by falsifying records — was going to be federal or state, and whether it was going to be campaign-finance related or election-interference related. Now the prosecutors have shown their hand, and their lead theory is going to be that Trump meant to interfere unlawfully with an election by concealing information that the voters might have considered. A case tends to look stronger after the prosecution picks a theory and commits to it. The evidence of deliberate falsification of records is going to be very strong.
Mary McCord: I agree, the falsification of business records seems rock-solid based on the documentary evidence.
The question for the jurors will be Trump’s knowledge and intent. I expect some of the evidence of Trump’s knowledge and intent will come from witnesses with varying degrees of credibility, but other evidence will come from emails and text messages, including those that will corroborate witnesses with credibility issues, like Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer.” The picture that the prosecutors will paint for the jury, based on the judge’s pretrial rulings, will give the jurors plenty of evidence of motive: to prevent information damaging to candidate Trump from becoming public just weeks before the 2016 election. It’s a very winnable case for the D.A.
French: Let’s stick with the legal analysis for a moment. The D.A. has to prove that Trump falsified business records in furtherance of committing (or concealing) another crime. But Trump hasn’t been charged with that other crime. Why hasn’t the D.A. charged additional crimes, and how could that affect the case?
McCord: Because, based on New York law, the D.A. was not required to seek indictment on the crimes that Trump is alleged to have intended to conceal by falsifying business records.
White: It’s not unusual to charge cases relying on an uncharged predicate crime. It’s usually a smart decision by the D.A. to make the charges narrower and simpler.
McCord: The jury will be instructed by Justice Juan Merchan about what they have to conclude about Trump’s intent and whether the government’s evidence has proved that intent beyond a reasonable doubt.
White: At the risk of getting all legal realist on you, jurors usually absorb case theories holistically — they decide if they accept the big picture and don’t get too bogged down with the details.
French: Thanks for bringing up the jury. You’ve both picked many juries in your career. Can you help readers understand what kind of juror each side is looking for (or worried about)?
McCord: Jury selection — “voir dire” in legal parlance — is intended to ensure that the jurors can be fair and impartial as they assess the evidence presented and apply the law to the facts as the judge instructs them. But realistically, the defense will be looking for jurors who they think will be skeptical of the government’s case and maybe who are skeptical of the government generally.
White: The defense wants someone who is independent and freethinking and willing to be the one holdout who hangs the jury — and, ideally, a secret Trump partisan.
McCord: Right, and so the government will be trying to weed out any potential juror they think could hang the jury. It likely will prefer well-read jurors, so long as those jurors are reading and listening to fact-based news. This is why one of the questions during jury selection asks potential jurors what media they visit, read or watch.
White: They’re both concerned about bias, but the government’s job is harder, since they need to convince all 12 jurors. TV and expensive consultants have encouraged us to think this is a scientific process that can be quantified. I think it remains a very subjective exercise.
French: You’ve both talked about intent as a key element in this case. As prosecutors, how do you go about proving intent in the face of either a defendant’s denial or the defendant’s silence?
White: Well, silence certainly isn’t the issue here. The best way to prove intent is with the defendant’s own words. And Trump runs his mouth a lot. As a prosecutor, you lay out the things the defendant did, and what they said about it, and ask the jury to draw inferences from that — why would he have done those things and said those things if he didn’t have this intent.
McCord: The government will be relying on witness testimony from those who spoke personally with Trump, like Michael Cohen and the former American Media chief David Pecker, but also on any corroborating evidence that doesn’t depend on credibility, like emails, text messages and other contemporaneous documentation.
White: It’s something lawyers view in a more complicated way than jurors do. Jurors tend to take things in a big-picture way. For years, legal pundits have been arguing that it’s hard to prove Trump’s intent because he’s so erratic and says so many contradictory things, so how can you draw inferences? But I don’t think a jury processes it that way.
McCord: This is also why it is important for the government to tell the whole story of the conspiracy to “catch and kill” allegations that would reflect poorly on Trump with voters and to elevate stories that would reflect poorly on his opponents. That broader scheme, dating back to 2015, suggests Trump’s intent not only to pay off Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet, but to conceal those payments through false business records. And the timing of the hush money payments just after the “Access Hollywood” story broke in October 2016 also provides clues about his intent given how close the election was.
French: How serious is this case for Trump, as a matter of legal jeopardy, especially given that he’d be a first-time nonviolent offender?
White: New York criminal practitioners seem fairly unanimous that a first-time offender convicted of something like this is extremely unlikely to do jail time. Add in his age and health, and it’s even more unlikely. The ridiculous truth is that to spend jail time in New York you’ve got to be a teenager accused of swiping a backpack or something.
McCord: I don’t think potential jail time is what is most important about this case. Being found guilty by a jury of a crime that was intended to influence a presidential election would be a huge deal, or at least it should be, especially if the person found guilty is running for president again.
French: Mary, I’m glad you said a conviction should be a huge deal. I absolutely agree. But would it be, truly? One side of me says that a felony conviction — especially following lurid evidence of the affair and coverup — could break through with at least some Americans. But then I remind myself that he has maintained his extraordinarily high floor of support through impeachments, indictments, a sexual abuse liability verdict and a pair of financially devastating civil judgments. Do you think a criminal trial has a unique chance to drive public opinion?
White: I’m afraid I’m a pessimist here. I think Trump has conditioned his base, perhaps 30 percent to 35 percent of the country, to see any conviction as unjust and illegitimate. The big question — on which the viability of the rule of law may hang — is what the people in the middle think. Will they care?
McCord: This is why the framing of the case is so important. Trump is not on trial for having an affair with a porn star. He is on trial for falsifying business records to give him an advantage in the election for president — and it was a close election. Today, Trump has used his claims of political persecution to solidify his base. But for those who don’t buy the persecution argument, conviction here might be enough to give them pause in November.
French: Let me ask a big-picture question. The rule of law is necessary for preserving our democracy, but I worry that it’s not sufficient. If enough people want Trump, can even a criminal conviction keep him at bay? Will the people get the Republic they want, law be damned?
White: The rule of law is not a deus ex machina that will save us from ignorance, prejudice and laziness. It’s not designed to, and is certainly inadequate to, fix our terrible politics. For that matter our political system might not be equipped to reject a populist like Trump. John Adams wrote : “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” He was probably talking about shared communal values rather than religious dogma. Without a shared set of values about what we expect from a leader, our system is probably not capable of defeating a tyrant.
McCord: Trump has exposed the weaknesses of a system that is based at least in part on the expectation that most people — both the governed and the governing — will seek to abide by the rule of law. But when someone like Trump comes along, we see that our system is slow and inefficient.
French: Rather than ending on a rather bleak note about American democracy, let’s conclude with a few lightning-round questions. First, which witness — aside from Michael Cohen — are you most interested in hearing from?
White: Trump himself. No sane defense attorney would want to put him on the stand. But will this be the case where he overrules his attorneys? It’s a ploy that’s very unlikely to get him a not-guilty verdict, but might be effective in reaching that lone holdout.
McCord: I’m also most interested in hearing from Trump.
French: This is pure speculation, but if the Stormy Daniels scandal emerged in October 2016, would Trump have won?
White: Yes. I think that sort of thing was already priced in. Nobody voted for him as a family man.
McCord: Coming on the heels of the “Access Hollywood” tape, this may have affected enough voters, particularly women voters, to make a difference.
French: Finally, what’s the best method for waking up a sleeping client ?
McCord: My client for most of my career was the United States, and the United States doesn’t fall asleep at the table.
White: Whisper how much you’re charging per hour.
