This is a primer on doing analysis and research to support decision making about warfighting. It examines the nature of warfighting as a research project, identifies and compares methods for doing decision analysis and research, and it offers suggestions for ensuring that research is useful for decision making.

This course is designed as an introduction to the study of security. Since the late 1980s, there has been a remarkable change in the way security is conceived, studied and practiced. The academic field of Security Studies has been the subject of intense academic, intellectual and political debate during this period. The main aim of this course is introduce students to old and new thinking about security. It traces the evolution of Security Studies from the study of war and strategy to concerns with individual, societal and global security.

This course introduces university students to the main theories, concepts, and issues in international security from both theoretical and analytical perspectives. The course provides students with the necessary tools to understand basic problems in international security now with some implications for the future. The course will cover basic approaches to the study of international security including realism, liberalism, and selected alternative approaches-and then explore key topics in international security including international security system, the sources of national powers, competition and cooperation among states; the causes of war and peace process; nuclear power and international crises.
