The 13 Best News Sites You Can Trust for Credible Stories

Want the best news sites around? Here are the top-ranked news sites that publish credible content, not fake news stories.

Fake news is a big issue right now. News companies are in the pockets of mega-billionaires. Media bias, inaccurate reporting, and sensationalism are on everyone's mind. We are in an age where we don't trust the people reporting the news.

Despite all this, there are still some trustworthy news sources out there. You just have to know where to look. In this article, we'll list some of the most honest and reliable news sources.

What We Mean When We Say "Trustworthy"

This is going to be a controversial article, no matter which news sites we suggest. Some people will disagree with the ones we choose. Others will be offended that we didn't include their favorite media outlets.

Unfortunately, there's no objective metric of trustworthiness. Most of the sites you'll see listed made their way onto this list because they've developed a solid reputation for unbiased news , and not-politically-motivated reporting.

Yes, you can contest a reputation as it is also in flux always. It can't be easily quantified (though we've cited sources where we can), and people will always have different opinions. That being said, we stand by the assertions we make here. Note that we are presenting these credible news websites in alphabetical order and not ranking by trustworthiness.

What Are AllSides Ratings?

In many of the entries below, we mention AllSides ratings. The ratings are from AllSides , which dedicates itself to exposing bias and providing multiple perspectives on issues. The site determines its ratings in a number of ways—you can check out its methodology for more information.

AllSides is itself a great place to get news, as it clearly labels each story as left-leaning, center, or right-leaning. We highly recommend it when you want to see what different people are saying about the same issue. It's eye-opening and can help you learn to pick out news bias, even on your most trusted news source.

1. Associated Press News

If you read a lot of news, you'll see the AP credited all over the place. It often reports stories first, and other outlets pick up those stories and run them for their own readers.

AP is a non-profit, has no corporate sponsorship, and is not government-funded. The crowd-sourced bias rating at AllSides is "left-leaning," as of writing. While you'll most often see AP cited in other news outlets, you can get news directly from the source.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest broadcaster in the world. The British government funds the organization, and so it is not beholden to corporate interests. The BBC has a history of over 90 years with a well-earned reputation for accurate, unbiased reporting.

AllSides classifies it as a center news source—meaning if you want balance, it's one of the unbiased independent news sites . Despite being center, US citizens may find that "center" in the UK is notably to the left of what they might be used to.

Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (C-SPAN) has been around since 1979. The channel provides unbiased news coverage of the US federal government, US political events, and limited coverage from the governments of the UK, Canada, and Australia.

C-SPAN is a private, non-profit organization that has never failed a single fact check in the past five years from mediabiasfactcheck.com .

4. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism

Though it has a focus on politics, the Bureau's stories will likely be of interest to people even outside the British political beat. As a non-profit, independent media organization, it has few ties to groups that might influence its political leanings. The Bureau publishes its stories in conjunction with other outlets—from both sides of the spectrum.

A look at its major investigations does show that many of its stories focus on issues that are generally of more interest to the left. The group prides itself on fact-based reporting, however, and does pull together a lot of data to support its claims.

The Bureau isn't listed on AllSides. But van Zandt, again, calls it among the most unbiased news outlets. Its stated mission is to "hold power to account," and its goal certainly comes through in its journalism. It also aims to drive change through journalism.

5. The Christian Science Monitor

Because it's a news magazine, the format of the Christian Science Monitor is a little different from the other best news sources on this list. It runs fewer stories, but those stories tend to be very in-depth. It was founded in response to the sensationalist press of the early 1900s, and it's maintained a strong reputation over 100 years later, maintaining its independence from mainstream media corporations.

There are two ways you can get news from CSM: through the daily edition (which gives you unlimited access to the site, key daily stories sent each evening via email, along with an explanation of why they're important) or the weekly version (which is also available in print and includes access to the daily edition).

Unfortunately, neither is free. The daily will run you $11/month, and the weekly is $15/month. Before Amazon discontinuing magazine and newspaper subscriptions , you could also grab it on your Kindle. However, the good news is that CSM also has several free newsletters you can subscribe to, including Today's Highlights and several others dedicated to different topics sent out on different days of the week.

6. The Economist

Although AllSides states that while The Economist tends to lean left, it does have a reputation for high-quality reporting. The publication "considers itself the enemy of privilege, pomposity, and predictability."

Throughout its history, the Economist has championed issues on both sides of the political spectrum. Today, it does tend to have a bit more of a left lean. That being said, it's not afraid to align itself with the party it believes best supports its ideals, which focus on free trade and free markets.

One of the unique features of the Economist is the lack of bylines. According to the news outlet's About Us page, "collective voice and personality matter more than the identities of individual journalists."

This is likely to be a controversial one, as public broadcasting is strongly associated with liberal political views in the US. However, NPR has a reputation for journalistic excellence. It's invested in continued government funding, but it remains free of corporate bias.

AllSides rates NPR as left-leaning, with a blind survey, third-party data, community feedback, and secondary research supporting the classification. The Pew survey shows that conservatives tend to mistrust NPR, but its journalistic acumen is high. It's known for rejecting sensationalism, issuing corrections when necessary, and fair reporting.

8. ProPublica

If you get your news from NPR, you've probably heard ProPublica mentioned. Like the AP, ProPublica is a non-profit, non-government-funded news organization. The fact that it was the first online news organization to win a Pulitzer Prize also gives it some credence (it's gone on to win several more since then). Similar to NPR, AllSides rates ProPublica as left-leaning.

ProPublica was founded in 2007-2008 with a mission to "expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions" through investigative journalism. This is a smaller organization than some of the others mentioned on this list, but it's absolutely worth checking out. We have a feeling it's going to continue to grow, both in size and reputation, so you should definitely add it to your trusted news outlets list.

Like the AP, other news outlets often cite Reuters—and that's largely because it has a long and solid reputation for good reporting. The organization is owned by Thomson Reuters. This gives it added resistance to corporate influence.

Reuters strives to use a "value-neutral approach" to guard against bias in its reporting (so much so that it has courted controversy, especially after refusing to use the word "terrorist" after the September 11 attacks in New York).

While you may not be as familiar with Reuters as some of the other outlets listed here, it has a long-standing reputation for good journalism. Its Hallmarks of Reuters Journalism is a great resource for anyone reporting the news, and Reuters editors hold their journalists to its tenets.

10. USA Today

In 2016, USA Today shared the crown of widest circulation in the US with The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. It's read all over the world and is a major source of news for millions of people every day. The op-eds in USA Today are clearly labeled and present a range of viewpoints (a refreshing change from the opinion pieces in some other publications).

AllSides gives the publication a left-leaning rating, although it notes that there's been some disagreement. The fact that two blind surveys and three recent editorial reviews supported this rating adds weight, however. You might be used to seeing USA Today in front of your hotel room door, but if you're looking for good news, do check the site regularly.

11. The Wall Street Journal

This is likely to be another controversial inclusion on the list, due to the ownership of WSJ by News Corporation, the mega-media conglomeration helmed by the Murdoch family. Rupert Murdoch has developed a reputation for being ruthlessly conservative and using his considerable media power for political influence. Some of his news outlets also have a deservedly terrible reputation.

The Journal, however, has consistently ranked as highly trusted in the United States, even after its takeover by News Corp. AllSides gives it a strong center rating in its recent blind survey.

It's important to note that the news and opinions section of WSJ has a strictly enforced separation and that op-eds tend to have a very strong right-leaning bias, which many agree with. Despite that, the news (especially financial news ) published by the outlet is of high quality.

If you're interested in media bias—beyond finding media that's minimally biased—you should definitely check out FAIR. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting is a watchdog group that writes about media bias. It publishes a number of remarkably stinging critiques of current news practices.

AllSides gives them a provisional left-leaning rating. FAIR is known for writing articles that critique even the largest media organizations, like The New York Times, CNN, and BBC. It doesn't hold back, and no one is safe from its rhetoric.

13. The Pew Research Center

Pew Research describes itself as a "nonpartisan fact tank" aiming to inform the public about the current issues and trends shaping the world. Pew Research derives its reporting from data through research and opinion polls. Like several outlets in this article, Pew Research is a non-profit, nonpartisan, and nonadvocacy organization mainly funded by its founding organization, The Pew Charitable Trusts.

According to AllSides, Pew Research is center-leaning, which the community agrees with. Pew Research doesn't publish new articles daily, so a good way to keep up with their reporting is by subscribing to their free newsletter.

Your Most Trusted News Outlets

These news sites have earned themselves reputations for being trustworthy. That said, news, in general, tends to have a negativity bias, which you can counteract by seeking out positive news.

Reporters and editors also have their own biases, so it's impossible to find 100 percent unbiased news—and that probably wouldn't be very fun to read anyway. But, in general, you can trust what you read from these outlets. The key is to read multiple publications that include a few credible news sources from the other side of the fence.

Audiences are declining for traditional news media in the U.S. – with some exceptions

A declining share of U.S. adults are following the news closely, according to recent Pew Research Center surveys. And audiences are shrinking for several older types of news media – such as local TV stations, most newspapers and public radio – even as they grow for newer platforms like podcasts, as well as for a few specific media brands.

Pew Research Center has long tracked trends in the news industry. In addition to asking survey questions about Americans’ news consumption habits , our State of the News Media project uses several other data sources to look at various aspects of the industry, including audience size, revenue and other metrics.

The data in this analysis comes from a variety of sources as part of Pew Research Center’s State of the News Media fact sheets. The fact sheets use a range of methodologies to study the health of the U.S. news industry, including analysis of industry data and direct reporting to solicit information unavailable elsewhere. All sources are cited in chart and graphic notes or within the text of the fact sheets. Read the methodology .

Pew Research Center is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts, its primary funder. This is the latest report in Pew Research Center’s ongoing investigation of the state of news, information and journalism in the digital age, a research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The latest data shows a complex picture. Here are some of our key findings:

Line chart showing that U.S. daily newspaper circulation continues to decline. As of 2022, estimated Sunday and weekday circulation had each fallen to just under 21 million.

  • For the most part, daily newspaper circulation nationwide – counting digital subscriptions and print circulation – continues to decline, falling to just under 21 million in 2022, according to projections using data from the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM). Weekday circulation is down 8% from the previous year and 32% from five years prior, when it was over 30 million. Out of 136 papers included in this analysis, 120 experienced declines in weekday circulation in 2022.
  • While most newspapers in the United States are struggling, some of the biggest brands are experiencing digital growth. AAM data does not include all digital circulation to three of the nation’s most prominent newspapers : The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. But while all three are experiencing declines in their print subscriptions, other available data suggests substantial increases in digital subscriptions for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. (Similar data is not available for The Washington Post.) For example, The New York Times saw a 32% increase in digital-only subscriptions in 2022, surpassing 10 million subscribers and continuing years of growth, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). There are many reasons this data is not directly comparable with the AAM data, including the fact that some digital subscriptions to The New York Times do not include news and are limited to other products like cooking and games. Still, these brands are bucking the overall trend.
  • Overall, digital traffic to newspapers’ websites is declining. The average monthly number of unique visitors to the websites of the country’s top 50 newspapers (based on circulation, and including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post) declined 20% to under 9 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from over 11 million in the same period in 2021, according to Comscore data. The length of the average visit to these sites is also falling – to just under a minute and a half in the last quarter of 2022.
  • Traffic to top digital news websites is not picking up the slack. Overall, traffic to the most visited news websites – those with at least 10 million unique visitors per month in the fourth quarter of a given year – has declined over the past two years. The average number of monthly unique visitors to these sites was 3% lower in October-December 2022 than in the same period in 2021, following a 13% drop the year before that, according to Comscore. The length of the average visit to these sites is getting shorter, too. (These sites can include newspapers’ websites, such as that of The New York Times, as well as other digital news sites like those of CNN, Fox News or Axios.)

Line chart showing declines in audiences for local TV news across morning, evening and late night time slots from 2016 to 2022 for ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates.

  • Across several years of data, there has been a drop in audiences for local TV news , affecting morning, evening and late-night time slots alike. For example, the average number of TVs tuning into ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates for the evening news was just over 3 million in 2022, down from just over 4 million in 2016.
  • Audience trends are a little more mixed when it comes to TV news on cable and network stations. Prime-time and daytime audiences for CNN, Fox News and MSNBC all grew in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic , before declining in 2021. Fox News’ audiences ticked back up in 2022 , while the audiences for the other two channels continued to decline.
  • Audiences for news programming on ABC, CBS and NBC have been relatively stable in recent years, with some variation depending on the time slot. Audiences for evening news are up slightly since 2016 on all three networks, but they are modestly down for morning news.
  • The story is mixed when it comes to audio, too. The share of Americans who listen to terrestrial radio has declined in recent years, as has listenership on NPR and PRX . But there has been a clear rise in audiences for podcasts and other types of online audio . Although podcasts often are not news-related, about two-thirds of U.S. podcast listeners say they hear news discussed on the podcasts they listen to.

Economic trends in the news industry

Declines in audience don’t necessarily mean declines in revenue, with some industries faring better than others in 2022. The newspaper industry and network television, for example, saw losses in advertising revenue, while local TV revenue followed typical patterns associated with election years.

Here are some data points on how these media sectors are faring economically, based on data from filings with the SEC, industry tracking companies and other sources:

Line chart showing total advertising and circulation revenue of U.S. newspapers, in U.S. dollars, from 1956 through 2022. As of 2022, estimated circulation revenue exceeds advertising revenue, $11.6 billion to $9.8 billion.

  • Advertising revenue for newspapers has continued to decline steadily. In 2020, projections of circulation revenue surpassed advertising revenue for the first time since at least 1956 (the first year for which data is available), and that pattern has held steady in recent years. The makeup of advertising revenue is changing as well: Nearly half of newspaper companies’ advertising revenue (48%) came from digital advertising in 2022, up from 19% in 2012.
  • For local television , advertising revenue has remained roughly stable on the whole, bolstered by increased digital advertising and consistent spikes in political advertising revenue during election years. Political advertising, in particular, has grown over the past decade, increasing from roughly $600 million in the 2012 presidential election year to about $1.9 billion in 2022 (a midterm election year). Local TV stations also have seen increasing revenue from retransmission fees, paid by cable and satellite systems to carry local channels.
  • Local public radio station revenue has increased, from roughly $1.1 billion in 2020 to about $1.2 billion in 2021. Revenue for NPR, specifically, increased 8% between 2021 and 2022.

Line chart showing estimated total annual revenue in U.S. dollars for cable news networks CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Fox News led in both total revenue and net advertising revenue, increasing from 2020 to 2022 to $3.3 billion. CNN and MSNBC saw slight declines over the same period.

  • Revenue trends for cable TV news vary depending on the network. Among the three major cable news networks, Fox News led in both total revenue and net advertising revenue, which increased from 2020 to 2022. CNN and MSNBC saw slight declines over the same period.
  • Advertising revenue has generally declined for ABC, CBS and NBC news programming since 2020, in both the morning and evening time slots.

Generative A.I. Arrives in the Gene Editing World of CRISPR

Has reported on the intersection of A.I. and health care for a decade.

  • April 22, 2024

Generative A.I. technologies can write poetry and computer programs or create images of teddy bears and videos of cartoon characters that look like something from a Hollywood movie.

Now, new A.I. technology is generating blueprints for microscopic biological mechanisms that can edit your DNA, pointing to a future when scientists can battle illness and diseases with even greater precision and speed than they can today.

Described in a research paper published on Monday by a Berkeley, Calif., startup called Profluent, the technology is based on the same methods that drive ChatGPT, the online chatbot that launched the A.I. boom after its release in 2022 . The company is expected to present the paper next month at the annual meeting of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy.

Much as ChatGPT learns to generate language by analyzing Wikipedia articles, books and chat logs, Profluent’s technology creates new gene editors after analyzing enormous amounts of biological data, including microscopic mechanisms that scientists already use to edit human DNA.

These gene editors are based on Nobel Prize-winning methods involving biological mechanisms called CRISPR. Technology based on CRISPR is already changing how scientists study and fight illness and disease , providing a way of altering genes that cause hereditary conditions, such as sickle cell anemia and blindness.

A group of casually dressed people pose on a cement walkway.

Previously, CRISPR methods used mechanisms found in nature — biological material gleaned from bacteria that allows these microscopic organisms to fight off germs.

“They have never existed on Earth,” said James Fraser, a professor and chair of the department of bioengineering and therapeutic sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, who has read Profluent’s research paper. “The system has learned from nature to create them, but they are new.”

The hope is that the technology will eventually produce gene editors that are more nimble and more powerful than those that have been honed over billions of years of evolution.

On Monday, Profluent also said that it had used one of these A.I.-generated gene editors to edit human DNA and that it was “open sourcing” this editor, called OpenCRISPR-1. That means it is allowing individuals, academic labs and companies to experiment with the technology for free.

A.I. researchers often open source the underlying software that drives their A.I. systems , because it allows others to build on their work and accelerate the development of new technologies. But it is less common for biological labs and pharmaceutical companies to open source inventions like OpenCRISPR-1.

Though Profluent is open sourcing the gene editors generated by its A.I. technology, it is not open sourcing the A.I. technology itself.

news report websites

The project is part of a wider effort to build A.I. technologies that can improve medical care. Scientists at the University of Washington, for instance, are using the methods behind chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and image generators like Midjourney to create entirely new proteins — the microscopic molecules that drive all human life — as they work to accelerate the development of new vaccines and medicines.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, on claims of copyright infringement involving artificial intelligence systems that generate text.)

Generative A.I. technologies are driven by what scientists call a neural network , a mathematical system that learns skills by analyzing vast amounts of data. The image creator Midjourney, for example, is underpinned by a neural network that has analyzed millions of digital images and the captions that describe each of those images. The system learned to recognize the links between the images and the words. So when you ask it for an image of a rhinoceros leaping off the Golden Gate Bridge, it knows what to do.

Profluent’s technology is driven by a similar A.I. model that learns from sequences of amino acids and nucleic acids — the chemical compounds that define the microscopic biological mechanisms that scientists use to edit genes. Essentially, it analyzes the behavior of CRISPR gene editors pulled from nature and learns how to generate entirely new gene editors.

“These A.I. models learn from sequences — whether those are sequences of characters or words or computer code or amino acids,” said Profluent’s chief executive, Ali Madani, a researcher who previously worked in the A.I. lab at the software giant Salesforce.

Profluent has not yet put these synthetic gene editors through clinical trials, so it is not clear if they can match or exceed the performance of CRISPR. But this proof of concept shows that A.I. models can produce something capable of editing the human genome.

Still, it is unlikely to affect health care in the short term. Fyodor Urnov, a gene editing pioneer and scientific director at the Innovative Genomics Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, said scientists had no shortage of naturally occurring gene editors that they could use to fight illness and disease. The bottleneck, he said, is the cost of pushing these editors through preclinical studies, such as safety, manufacturing and regulatory reviews, before they can be used on patients.

But generative A.I. systems often hold enormous potential because they tend to improve quickly as they learn from increasingly large amounts of data. If technology like Profluent’s continues to improve, it could eventually allow scientists to edit genes in far more precise ways. The hope, Dr. Urnov said, is that this could, in the long term, lead to a world where medicines and treatments are quickly tailored to individual people even faster than we can do today.

“I dream of a world where we have CRISPR on demand within weeks,” he said.

Scientists have long cautioned against using CRISPR for human enhancement because it is a relatively new technology that could potentially have undesired side effects, such as triggering cancer, and have warned against unethical uses, such as genetically modifying human embryos.

This is also a concern with synthetic gene editors. But scientists already have access to everything they need to edit embryos.

“A bad actor, someone who is unethical, is not worried about whether they use an A.I.-created editor or not,” Dr. Fraser said. “They are just going to go ahead and use what’s available.”

The image is fabricated. A spokesperson for the news network said it didn't report such a claim. There is no evidence of the article on CNN's website.

CNN headline is fabricated

The claim refers to former President Donald Trump's ongoing hush money trial, which began April 15 and had opening statements April 22 . Trump is the first former president to stand trial in a criminal case. He is accused of falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.

But the headline in the Threads post isn't real. There is no evidence of it anywhere on CNN's website .

"This image was fabricated and not something CNN ever reported," said CNN spokesperson Emily Kuhn .

Fact check : Photo supposedly showing Stormy Daniels in a mushroom-printed dress is altered

The post was shared on April 20 – a Saturday, when court was not in session. CNN published articles about Trump's trial on April 19 , when jury selection finished , and April 22 , when opening statements took place and witness testimony began. There is no mention of anything similar to the claim in those articles, nor is such an incident mentioned in any of CNN's coverage since then.

Trump's behavior in and out of court has made headlines during the trial. Maggie Haberman, a reporter for The New York Times, reported that Trump appeared to be sleeping in the courtroom on the first day of his trial , a claim Trump's campaign denied . In addition, Judge Juan Merchan is considering whether to punish Trump for allegedly violating his gag order by commenting on potential witnesses in the case.

Germany arrests men accused of spying on U.S. military sites for Russia in sabotage plot to undermine Ukraine aid

Germany arrests men who allegedly spied on U.S. military sites for Russia in sabotage plot to undermine Ukraine aid

MUNICH, Germany — Two men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of spying for Russia and collecting information about potential attack targets, including U.S. military facilities, authorities said Thursday.

The German Federal Prosecutor's office said in a statement that two German Russian nationals — named only as Dieter S. and Alexander J. in line with the country's privacy rules — were working with a Russian secret service agent to undermine international military support for Ukraine .

Dieter S., who is suspected of being a former fighter for pro-Kremlin forces in eastern Ukraine, is accused of making arrangements for an explosive or arson attack in Germany.

The German Foreign Ministry confirmed that it summoned the Russian ambassador to Berlin on Thursday in light of the arrests.

The Federal Criminal Police Office arrested the men Wednesday in Bayreuth, a city in the southern state of Bavaria.

Bavarian state police searched their homes and workplaces. Some Ukrainian soldiers have been training at U.S. military installations in this part of Bavaria.

Arrest warrants dated April 9 accuse both men of working for a foreign secret service, carrying out "activity for sabotage purposes" and obtaining "security-threatening depictions of military installations," prosecutors said.

The prosecutor's statement said Dieter S. has been in touch with a "person who is connected to the Russian secret service" since October, with whom he discussed possible sabotage operations in Germany.

"The actions were intended in particular to undermine military support provided to Ukraine from Germany against the Russian war of aggression," the statement said.

"Against this background, the accused stated to his counterpart that he was willing to use explosion and arson attacks especially on infrastructure used for military purposes and industrial sites in Germany," it added. "To prepare, Dieter S. collected information about potential attack targets, including U.S. military facilities."

Authorities accused Dieter S. of going to multiple sites to take photos and videos that were passed on to his Russian secret service contact. They also allege that Alexander J. helped him from March this year at the latest.

Dieter S. appeared Wednesday in court, where he was placed in pretrial detention. Alexander J will appear in court Thursday, authorities said.

A separate arrest warrant dated April 11 accuses Dieter S. of membership in a foreign terrorist organization and of "preparation of a serious act of violence that endangers the state." The warrant notes the "strong suspicion" that he was active as a pro-Russian soldier in an armed wing of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic , engaging in the ongoing war for control of Ukraine.

Ukraine has long warned that Russian spies were active across Europe and working to sabotage its defense against Russia's invasion, in particular in Germany.

Oleksiy Danilov, the former coordinator of Ukraine's war Cabinet, told The Times of London last month: "We have made multiple warnings to our German partners about the spy network of Russians that are very active in Germany."

He added: "It is well known the Russians are listening to conversations of German officials and we think this is not the last conversation they have."

Danilov was removed from his job and replaced last month as part of a military shake-up by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Germany accused Russia of "information war" last month after Russian state media published the audio of a private discussion among high-ranking German military officers about support for Ukraine, sparking embarrassment in Berlin and glee in Moscow.

Germany has become the second-biggest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the U.S., but it has been engaged in a fierce debate over whether it should be doing more.

“We know that the Russian power apparatus is also targeting our country," Justice Minister Marco Buschmann wrote on X after the arrests, adding that Germany “must respond to this threat defensively and decisively.”

Germany’s top security official, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, said in a statement that this was "a particularly serious case of suspected spy activity for Putin’s criminal regime."

Asked about the arrests Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "I can’t comment on it in any way. I do not have any information in this regard.”

American tourist facing possible 12-year prison sentence after ammo found in luggage in Turks and Caicos

By Kris Van Cleave

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 8:47 AM EDT / CBS News

Valerie Watson returned to Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport in tears on Tuesday morning in a drastic departure from how she imagined her long weekend trip to Turks and Caicos would end.

Watson is home, but her husband, Ryan Watson, is in jail on the island and facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years behind bars after airport security allegedly found four rounds of hunting ammo in his carry-on bag earlier this month.

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News. "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

Valerie Watson, who learned Sunday she would not be charged and would be allowed to return home, said the trip "went from what was supposed to be a dream vacation to a nightmare."

The Watsons are not the only ones going through this ordeal.

Bryan Hagerich is awaiting trial after ammo was found in the Pennsylvania man's checked bag in February.

"I subsequently spent eight nights in their local jail. Some of the darkest, hardest times of my life, quite frankly," Hagerich said. "These last 70 days have been kind of a roller coaster, just the pain and suffering of having your family at home and I'm here."

Possessing a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously often able to just pay a fine. In February, however, a court order mandated that even tourists in the process of leaving the country are subject to prison time.

Since November 2022, eight firearms and ammunition prosecutions in total have been brought involving tourists from the United States, three of which are currently before the court with each of the defendants on bail.

Last year, a judge found Michael Grim from Indiana had "exceptional circumstances" when he pleaded guilty to accidentally having ammunition in his checked bag. He served almost six months in prison.

"No clean running water. You're kind of exposed to the environment 24/7," he told CBS News. "Mosquitoes and tropical illnesses are a real concern. There's some hostile actors in the prison."

The judge was hoping to send a message to other Americans.

"[His] sentencing was completely predicated on the fact that I was an American," Grim said.

The U.S. embassy last September posted a travel alert online, warning people to "check your luggage for stray ammunition," noting it would "not be able to secure your release from custody."

In a statement, a State Department spokesperson told CBS News, "We are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos.  When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States."

Last year, TSA found a record 6,737 guns at airport security checkpoints, and most of them were loaded.

"I can't even begin to think that this very innocent, regrettable mistake would prevent me from being able to watch my son graduate or teach him to shave or take my daughter to dances," Ryan Watson said. "It's just unfathomable. I do not — I can't process it."

The Turks and Caicos government responded to CBS News in a lengthy statement confirming the law and reiterating that, even if extenuating circumstances are found to be present, the judge is required to mandate prison time.

CDRH Issues 2024 Safety and Innovation Reports

Reports highlight CDRH actions to advance medical device safety and innovation and build on these efforts this year.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 17, 2024

The following is attributed to Jeff Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)

Today, CDRH is issuing two companion reports that detail the Center's commitment to further advance our core pillars of safety and innovation. The CDRH 2024 Safety Report is an update to our 2018 Medical Device Safety Action Plan and features steps we have taken in recent years to assure the safety of medical devices keeps pace with the evolving technology. The CDRH 2024 Innovation Report highlights our work to advance innovation and the progress we have made to make the U.S. market more attractive to top device developers.

As we have long stated, safety and innovation are not polar opposites, but rather two sides of the same coin. Our focus on safety and innovation stems from our vision to protect and promote the public health by assuring that medical devices on the U.S. market are high-quality, safe and effective, and that patients and providers have timely and continued access to these devices.

Since 2009, CDRH has focused our efforts on advancing the development of safer, more effective medical devices that provide a significant benefit to the public health. As such, we enhanced our clinical trial and premarket review programs, including the 510(k) and De Novo pathways, and created new programs like the Breakthrough Devices Program , the Safety and Performance Based Pathway and the Safer Technologies Program to help reduce barriers for innovators. As a result of these actions and other past and ongoing efforts, the number of innovative medical devices authorized annually in the U.S. has increased five-fold since 2009.

In parallel, we took significant actions to improve device safety and enhanced our ability to identify and address new safety signals. We achieved an ambitious set of goals outlined in our 2018 Medical Device Safety Action Plan to help ensure patient safety throughout the Total Product Life Cycle (TPLC) of a medical device. We made improvements and updates to our medical device reporting programs, including updating the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database, vastly improved our recalls program, and took steps to ensure the timely communication and resolution of new or known safety issues.

And throughout, we partnered with patients and incorporated their voices into our work, including establishing our Patient Science and Engagement Program, because at the end of the day, improving the health and the quality of life of people is at the core of our public health mission.

We are proud of the progress we've made to advance innovation and improve the safety of medical devices, and we continue to build on these efforts, as resources and additional capabilities permit. One of the challenges we face, though, is the sheer volume of products and producers. Today there about 257,000 different types of medical devices on the U.S. market, made by approximately 22,000 manufacturing facilities worldwide, and CDRH authorizes roughly a dozen new or modified devices every business day. Despite that, the number of new or increased known safety issues involve only a small fraction of technologies and many can be addressed without any changes to the device itself. However, the impact to people can be significant, which is why we need to continuously take steps to advance both safety and innovation.

This year, we will take additional actions to help further ensure innovative, high-quality, safe, and effective devices are developed and marketed to U.S. patients. As further detailed in the 2024 Innovation Report, three actions we plan to take this year include: reimagining our premarket review program, expanding our footprint in geographical innovation centers, and launching a new home as a health care hub to extend first-class care into the home. Additionally, as detailed in the 2024 Safety Report, three actions we plan to take this year include: expanding a program to assist companies improve their device quality efforts, strengthening active surveillance, and enhancing the medical device recall process.

Through these new actions and the work detailed in the 2024 Safety and Innovation reports, CDRH remains committed to furthering our mission to protect and promote the public health and ensure our organization is well-positioned to meet the needs of all people and changes in the medical device ecosystem.
