Crafting an Excellent (PhD) Research Poster

“A research poster is a well-structured, attractive, self-explanatory and concise piece of information representing your PhD or research work.”

A PhD student should have to do a lot of stuff during the entire tenure of their PhD. Their work includes searching the literature, writing thesis & research articles, doing lab work & fieldwork and conducting lectures.

They also have to present their work too to get academic and research recognition. In fact, in some countries and education systems, 1 to 2 research presentations are mandatory.

Meaning, prospective students must have to present their work besides completing other criteria. One has to wait a bit more if they fail to do this. So presenting your work has significant importance much like your PhD thesis or research article.

Students can present their work in scientific gatherings such as seminars, symposiums or conferences. Two common ways to present the research work are either presenting it through presentation or through research posters.

Most students prefer presenting a poster rather than facing scientists during the presentation. And of course, it’s an easy way too. You may even win prizes ( the majority of students just want to present it! They don’t even bother about prizes and positions. )

So the moral of the story is that if you are in a PhD or doctorate, you will probably have to present a research poster in the coming time or in the future.

Sometimes, a bad research paper may spoil your and your supervisor’s reputation, that’s why it should be nearly perfect. In this blog post, I am gonna tell you how you can make an excellent research poster, why it’s needed and why it is important!

I will also tell you to use which platforms for making an amazing poster. So I know the topic perhaps isn’t important for you now! But it will save your PhD, trust me.

Stay tuned,

What is a research poster?

A research poster is a part of the academic curriculums in the majority of Education systems in which students can present their work. Schools conduct poster sessions for fun activities and encourage students to be more and more involved in research.

However, universities conduct research poster presentations to establish someone’s original work.

Put simply, it’s a platform for prospective candidates to present their research or a minute portion of their work in front of the scientific community.

Definition:

A research poster comprises research in summarize, concise, and attractive manner including texts, infographics, images and colors.

What is the importance of a research poster?

As I said, there are several benefits of presenting a poster. First, you can consider it as a gate to enter the scientific fraternity. It’s not just a poster, it’s a piece of information, a valuable one and useful.

Online platforms such as “ResearchGate” have options to add posters in your “research portfolio”, meaning, it is essential.

You can get scientific recognition as well as acknowledgment if you have done fantastic research.

A research poster is mandatory to achieve a doctorate degree. It is one of the measures to award the degree.

You can interact with other newbie researchers in your field and can make a community.

You can interact and get in contact with some well-known scientists too. You even can take their help in your PhD.

Last but not the least, you can win a prize!

What to include in the research poster?

Now you may wonder how you can make an outstanding but professional poster. Here are ‘must include’ things.

  • Words and attractive titles.
  • Colors and shapes
  • Interactive and infographics
  • Statistics, graphs and images.

Any research which belongs to you can be included. These technical thighs must be there too,

  • Introduction
  • Material & methods
  • Results and conclusion
  • References.

Keep in mind that you ain’t writing a research paper , use less text and try to make it attractive. Here are examples,

phd day poster

In addition, don’t forget to mention your name, your guide’s name, institutional affiliation and University on the poster. If possible include acknowledgments too.

How to make an excellent research poster?

  • Include words around 300 to 800 (maximum).
  • A reader can read your text from a minimum of 10 feet.
  • Write to the point
  • Propose a short, self-explanatory and interest-driven title
  • Use eye-catchy colors and a professional layout.

Research poster Template specifications:

Here I have given two different poster template formats which are common. You can use a wider one or a longer one, that depends on you. However, how you present it matters more than the design.

phd day poster

Tips for a Research Paper:

  • Use a chart or something like that to present the Material and methods section.
  • Present results in Charts and tables.
  • Include statistical analysis in results to avoid unnecessary data.
  • Use images to show the introduction and background.

Conclusion:

A research poster is a unique opportunity for newbie scientists that present their work. When someone gives you positive feedback or appreciates your work, you feel great. And that’s important.

Timely presenting work will boost your confidence to do more with your PhD work, and I think perhaps it’s the main objective of conducting a presentation session.

In addition, use Powerpoint Presentation or Keynote for preparing it, or you can make your work easy by choosing ready-to-use templates available online.

Remember a research poster is as important as your dissertation, research paper or viva. If you have any suggestions or questions do let me know in the comment section.

Someone released a 'Steal from Loblaws Day' song and people have mixed reactions

Latest Videos

The ire against Loblaw stores continues as someone has released a jingle about the controversial and  heavily  condemned " Steal From Loblaws Day " movement.

A TikToker and musician who goes by Callum released his comedic jingle on social media a few days ago, and it's garnered a ton of reaction.

"Galen Weston is a man with 15,000 times more money than the average man," the song starts out, taking a jab  at the chairperson and director  of Loblaw Companies Ltd.

"He inherited a grocery chain from his dad and stole millions of dollars in a price-fixing scam," he continues, referring to the scandal where Canada Bread and Weston Foods (which was previously owned by the Weston family and sold off in 2021) conspired to overcharge customers on bread products by artificially raising prices.

"That was then, this is now. Make more money, Galen, you know how," Callum raps monotonously over a soft synth beat.

@schcallum Nobody steal from Galen Weston Jr. on May 12th im serious #cdnpoli #galenweston #loblaws ♬ original sound - Callum 🌸

The song points to the many ways Loblaw has frustrated customers, and finally, Callum mentions Steal From Loblaws Day.

Posters encouraging people to steal from the company's grocery stores recently started popping up around Toronto.

West End Phoenix, a community newspaper in the city, shared a photo of a poster last week.

The posters read: "The first annual Steal From Loblaws Day! May 12, 2024."

On the bottom are the logos of Loblaw-owned stores like Real Canadian Superstore, T&T, No Frills, Fortinos and Shoppers Drug Mart .

The sign does not indicate who is organizing the event.

Critical mass pic.twitter.com/twSU6W9ouB — West End Phoenix (@westendphoenix) April 18, 2024

The movement has been denounced by both  Loblaw  and the  Loblaws Is Out of Control  Reddit group, which started the  Canada-wide Loblaw boycott,  set to kick off in May.

"This is extremely concerning to read about," Emily Johnson, creator of the Reddit group, said in a previous statement. "We have not heard anything about this and explicitly condemn this kind of behaviour."

In his jingle, Callum shares a different stance about the Steal From Loblaws Day movement.

"You shouldn't steal from Loblaws on May 12," he sings sarcastically. "It's only okay when they steal from you."

"Steal from Loblaws Day is May 12 but why stop at May 12? May 13, May 14, May 15 — steal from Loblaws Day is every day of the week. If you see someone stealing, no, you didn't. If you see someone forgetting to scan items, no, you didn't," he continues.

The tune has garnered quite a response online, with many people condemning theft from any store, including those owned by Loblaw.

"I despise the Loblaws, Sobeys and Walmart oligopoly, but shoplifting is a criminal act which deserves punishment. No excuses. One wrong doesn't make a right," said one TikTok user in the comments.

Others noted that if people start stealing, those who are just genuinely trying to boycott the chain would be painted in a negative light.

"r/loblawsisoutofcontrol is against stealing from Loblaws during the boycott, starting May 1. We don't want the media to paint all boycotters as criminals," said another.

"Don't steal from Loblaws! This is going to be used to show that the protesters are just criminals and will hurt the cause. Don’t do it," stated one comment.

"Stealing will make our society worse. There are smarter ways to hurt Loblaws," someone else suggested, while another added, "We are supposed to be having a boycott of Loblaws in May. Stealing is wrong."

Other commenters had some wild theories, with some believing that Loblaw is involved with the Steal From Loblaws Day posters.

"Be careful of using that poster. People on the boycott Reddit believe that it may be planted by Loblaws to discredit the boycott," said one person.

"That Steal from Loblaws Day is an astroturfed ploy by Loblaws to discredit the boycott and garner sympathy from the public."

One person deemed it "a PR stunt by Loblaws to discredit the boycott group."

Some people were simply supportive of Callum's artistry.

"Voice of a nation," reads one comment. "Put it on Spotify, my dude," encourages another commenter.

The Loblaws Is Out of Control Reddit group has made it very clear on its subreddit that it is against any act of stealing.

"While we are more than aware that times are tough for Canadians, we encourage our peers to adhere to local laws and raise their concerns via proper channels," Johnson previously said.

"This is not the way to have your voice heard."

PHD hosts National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

COEUR d'ALENE — The Panhandle Health District, in collaboration with Blue Cross of Idaho, is hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

PHD staff will accept all unused and expired medication in pill and liquid forms. The North Idaho Alliance of Care will also be participating in the event and will accept sharps that need disposed of and have their mobile HIV testing unit on site. Services are free and anonymous, no questions asked.

"All are welcome to drop by and dispose of unused medication and sharps safely,” said Makenna Hunziker, project coordinator at PHD and event coordinator, in a press release. “The Take Back Day is easy, free and provides an opportunity for community members to safely and securely dispose of unused, expired and unwanted prescription medications and help prevent substance misuse and overdose deaths.”

According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, in 2021 the North Idaho region had two of the highest prescribing rates in the state.

And according to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 8.7 million people aged 12 or older misused prescription pain relievers in the past year. The survey also showed that 44.9% of misused prescription drugs were obtained from a friend or relative.

“Holding onto expired or unused prescription medications increases the risk of misuse,” Hunziker said.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene location of Blue Cross of Idaho, 1812 N. Lakewood Drive.

Every year, World Malaria Day is observed on April 25. This year, the special day falls on Thursday.

Since 2001, African Governments have been celebrating Africa Malaria Day. In 2008, Africa Malara Day was changed to World Malaria Day at the 60th session of the World Health Assembly sponsored by World Health Organisation . They decided that the world needs to be more aware and cautious about the preventive measures against Malaria and mosquito bites. Hence, the day came to be celebrated every year.

Significance:

"On this World Malaria Day 2024, we unite under the theme - Accelerating the fight against malaria for more equitable world. This theme, which is in sync with this year’s World Health Day theme - My Health, My Right, underscores the urgent need to address the stark inequities that persist in access to malaria prevention, detection, and treatment services," stated Saima Wazed, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia on the official website of World Health Organisation.

World Malaria Day urges people to come together to help in preventing the spread of this disease. It also sets the platform for international partners, companies, and foundations to showcase their efforts in eradicating this disease and contributing to better healthcare structure.

Gov. Whitmer, EGLE announce $290M in funding to support water infrastructure projects

April 22, 2024

$290 million expansion of the MI Clean Water Plan  announced Monday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy supports critical water infrastructure projects like lead service line removals, rehabilitation and upgrades to drinking water and wastewater plants, improvements to sewer systems, and much more.

The money, which utilizes existing bonding authority from the bipartisan, voter-approved 2002 Great Lakes Water Quality Protection Bond, will be split between the state’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and will be available through loans and low interest financing this year for projects currently in the State Revolving Fund process.

“Every family deserves to have confidence that their drinking water is safe and that our world-class waters are protected,” said Phil Roos, EGLE Director. “Ensuring access to affordable, clean drinking water and safeguarding our Great Lakes is a top priority for Michiganders. That’s why we’ve leveraged billions in state and federal funds to assist Michigan communities in upgrading their water infrastructure, but there’s more work to do. These additional resources will provide an additional tool in the state’s toolbox to ensure we continue to make progress on rebuilding and modernizing our water infrastructure.”

World Malaria Day 2024: Prevention Tips To Keep You And Your Family Safe

World Malaria Day 2024: We can utilise this day to help understand and prevent it

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria symptoms typically include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.

World Malaria Day is an international observance held annually on April 25th to raise awareness about malaria and to mobilise efforts to control and eliminate the disease. It was established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2007 to highlight the global burden of malaria and to promote actions to prevent and control the disease. We can utilise this day to help understand and prevent it. Read on as we share some prevention tips.

10 Prevention tips to reduce the risk of malaria:

1. use mosquito nets.

Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) helps prevent mosquito bites during the night, which is when malaria-transmitting mosquitoes are most active. Make sure the net is properly tucked in and not torn to ensure mosquitoes can't enter.

2. Apply insect repellent

Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin to repel mosquitoes. Apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions and reapply as directed, especially after swimming or sweating.

3. Wear long-sleeved clothing

Cover as much skin as possible with long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Light-coloured clothing may also be less attractive to mosquitoes.

4. Stay indoors during peak mosquito activity

Mosquitoes that carry malaria are most active during the early evening and early morning. If possible, stay indoors during these times, or use appropriate preventive measures if you need to be outside.

5. Eliminate standing water

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so eliminate any sources of standing water around your home, such as in flower pots, buckets, or clogged gutters. Change water in pet bowls and bird baths regularly.

6. Use indoor residual spraying (IRS)

Indoor residual spraying involves spraying insecticides on the indoor walls and ceilings of houses to kill mosquitoes that land on these surfaces. This can significantly reduce the number of mosquitoes indoors and therefore reduce malaria transmission.

7. Seek medical advice before traveling to malaria-endemic areas

If you're planning to travel to a region where malaria is prevalent, consult with a healthcare provider well in advance to discuss preventive measures, including taking antimalarial medication, and ensure you have the necessary vaccinations.

8. Take antimalarial medication

If recommended by a healthcare professional, take antimalarial medication before, during, and after your trip to a malaria-endemic area. Follow the prescribed dosage and schedule strictly to ensure effectiveness and minimise the risk of contracting malaria.

9. Keep your surroundings clean

Maintain a clean environment both indoors and outdoors to discourage mosquito breeding. Regularly dispose of garbage, trim bushes and shrubs, and keep grass and vegetation around your home well-maintained.

10. Stay informed

Stay updated on malaria risk levels in your area and follow any advisories or guidelines provided by local health authorities. Being aware of the current situation allows you to take appropriate preventive measures and seek prompt medical attention if needed.

Our Baltimore Location!

Highest Quality. PhD Posters Baltimore uses the same photo-gloss paper and HP printers as the big boys. We may be cheap, but we don't compromise on quality. Most of our customers print research posters, but we can print other types of posters as well! Examples include sports posters, maps, and photo collages.

Convenient Local Pickup. PhD Posters Baltimore offers convenient order pickup service from the Johns Hopkins Medicine campus. Posters are dropped off at 10am on weekdays. We can also ship directly to your home or event location. Click HERE to view our pickup location on a map. Additional pickup instructions and details are included in your order confirmation email.

Easy Online Ordering. Start your order and upload your poster file as a PDF or PowerPoint; pay directly online to complete your order. The whole online ordering process takes about 5 minutes. If only research was this simple!

Extended Ordering Hours. With first-hand experience conducting research, we understand that you want to put the most current data on your poster and that new data may come late in the day. If you don't make the 6:30pm ordering deadline, we accept a few rush orders each evening between 6:30pm and 9pm that will be printed that night and ready for pickup at 10am the next morning.

Quick Turnaround Time. Turnaround time is generally 10am the next day for a single poster submitted as a PDF (PowerPoint files add 1 additional day). During busy conference seasons, PDF turnaround may be two days. We print posters in the order in which they are received.

Current turnaround time for a new order. Choose "Local Pickup", and then scroll down to select the Baltimore Branch. When selected, the turnaround time will then appear below our branch name.

Formatting Tips. We offer useful and practical tips for designing your poster so that you don't have to figure it all out on your own. Please visit our "How-To" tab at the top of the page to ensure your poster is looking its best!

The most common formatting issues are uneven margins and low resolution images. To prevent uneven margins, please ensure that one dimension of your poster (either length or width) is 36" or 42". To check the resolution of your poster, open in PPT or Adobe Acrobat and zoom to 100% (or if you made your poster at 1/2 size, zoom accordingly to 200%). The quality of the images on your screen at this magnification is the same as the quality that will print.

Conference Pickup. Check conference pickup to see if we've already set up a custom order portal for you. We provide on-site delivery to all our events. Organizing a conference or event and want to work with us? Email Theresa at theresa@phdposters.com .

Trump's all-caps, high-octane rage posting is even more intense than it was during his 2016 campaign: report

  • A Washington Post analysis has found that Donald Trump is Truthing up a storm this election cycle.
  • The Post found Trump had drafted 760 all-uppercase screeds in 487 days of his 2024 campaign.
  • Trump's Truth Social posts have gotten him into trouble during his criminal trials.

Insider Today

Donald Trump has always been a high-energy poster, but a new analysis from The Washington Post shows just how online the former president is.

The Post analyzed Trump's online posts during his 2016 and 2024 campaigns and found that his posting had become more frequent. It reported that between June 2015 and March 2016, the president posted an average of 18 times a day on Twitter, and during his current campaign, which began in November 2022 , he'd been posting roughly 29 times a day on Truth Social.

Trump's recent Truths contain many all-caps screeds, and the Post found that he'd written 760 uppercase posts in the 487 days between November 15, 2022, and March 15. In the same timeframe, he'd written 570 posts insulting political opponents, such as President Joe Biden, and the prosecutors and judges working on his cases, the Post reported.

"President Trump uses Truth Social — which is as hot as a pistol — to speak truth to power and get his message out unfiltered," Trump's campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, told the outlet.

Cheung didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Related stories

Trump's posts tend to be about his brimming legal docket of four criminal cases , multiple civil cases such as the ones brought against him by the writer E. Jean Carroll and New York Attorney General Letitia James , and his persisting belief that he's the victim of a political witch hunt .

In Trump's Manhattan criminal trial, he's also pushed the limits of a gag order that instructs him not to post "threatening, inflammatory, denigrating" remarks on his social media about witnesses , court staff, and jurors. Trump's also been accused multiple times of inciting violence with his posts — he faced a similar accusation over his Twitter posts before the riots on January 6, 2021 .

District Attorney Fani Willis , who brought a 41-count indictment against the former president in the Georgia election-interference case, has also felt the wrath of Trump's posts. The DA faced racist abuse and calls for violence after Trump posted about his case.

The Post's analysis also found that Truth Social had become an effective bubble for Trump — the king of the castle on his majority-owned conservative social-media site — to foster his rage. It reported that the former president shared hundreds of links from right-wing sites, with 407 links to Right Side Broadcasting Network and 318 links to Breitbart News, to name a few.

While Trump is deeply entrenched in his social-media site, which he launched in 2022 after being barred from sites such as Twitter, the company continues to experience financial troubles.

Since Trump Media & Technology Group — the company that owns Truth Social — went public at the end of March, the company's shares have continued to fall , going from more than $70 a share to about $36 as of Friday, BI previously reported .

Trump's net worth initially jumped to $7 billion — making him richer than the billionaire George Soros. Following the loss in value of the company's stocks, the former president lost $3.3 billion and is set to lose more.

The company also reported a net loss of $58.2 million in 2023, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing from Trump Media .
