The School has a variety of research activities spanning a diverse range of areas. The School is prominently associated with five research groups in the College: the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, the Children’s Research Centre, the Trinity College Centre for Global Health, the Trinity College Research Centre for Psychological Health and the Trinity College Centre for Innovative Human Systems.
Within the three years, the course provides an intensive and systematic programme of training, equipping each student to meet the challenges facing clinical psychology and to make a unique contribution to the Irish Health Services.
This intensive full-time course provides professional training in Counselling Psychology and is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland. Admission is on a yearly basis for approximately 12 to 14 students.
These online courses are relevant to safety critical industries across the globe and focuses on people already in work, who have responsibility for managing: risk; change; safety; quality; planning; system design.
The course is designed to provide students with a thorough appreciation of issues in applied psychology, knowledge of the skills required to apply psychology effectively, and a detailed understanding of their chosen focus of application.
The MSc in Global Mental Health is an exciting new programme granting students the knowledge and skills to pursue global mental health careers that bridge governmental, non-governmental, humanitarian work, and academia.
The Masters of Philosophy in Psychoanalytic Studies offers graduates a thorough introduction to the history, theory and applications in clinical work and in the wider culture of psychoanalysis from Freud to modern writers in this broad field.
This is an intensive full time course which aims to ensure that students become efficient in the practical application of the principles of applied behaviour analysis, with particular regard to persons with autism and other developmental disabilities and/or children and adolescents in care or special programmes, and/or those clients presenting learning and/or behavioural challenges in school.
The M.Sc. / P.Grad. Diploma in Clinical Supervision part-time course is aimed at practitioners in the helping professions who normally hold an honours degree in psychology or a related field and relevant post-graduate experience.
The purpose of the course is to provide a pre-professional qualification in psychology, which confers eligibility for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and allows a student to proceed to postgraduate training, including higher degrees by research, and to specialise in an area of professional psychology.

Counselling Psychology (D.Couns.Psych.)
Course overview.
The intensive Counselling Psychology programme provides professional training in Counselling Psychology and is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
The course emphasises the scientist-practitioner model and research-informed practice. The scientist-practitioner model is fostered through research classes and work on the research dissertation. Students are informed on a variety of research strategies (including e,g, experimental as well as descriptive and qualitative, phenomenological, hermeneutic, discourse analytic and grounded theory approaches) and learn to critically evaluate the strenghts and weaknesses of different methodologies.

The course is designed for students with a degree in Psychology or Dip.Psych. with relevant professional experience who would like to progress their academic and research performance with the practice of counselling psychology and acquire professional knowledge and skills.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of this course are qualified counselling psychologists, skilled to conduct mental health assessments and therapy with individuals, couples, families and groups across the lifespan. Graduates have pursued careers as counselling psychologists in a variety of settings and have been employed by Health Service Executive, within the National Counselling Service, Refugee and Asylum Seekers Service, Autism Services; Voluntary agencies; Hospitals; Third level student counselling services; Private practice and multiple other locations. Graduates have also pursued further academic research, including Ph.Ds.
Course Structure
In the first year, the course offers academic and practical skills training in counselling psychology and related research. After the first few weeks of full-time coursework and personal development work, 2 full days per week are spent on placement and the 2-3 days in classes. The D.Couns.Psych. offers a wide range of course-approved placement options in community, health, mental health, education and private practice settings, as well as welcoming new student recommended sites, particularly for those students residing outside the greater Dublin area. At least 3 different placements are required during the 3 years of the course
The second year involves further training in counselling theories and practice, and students conduct a research dissertation related to counselling psychology, initiated during the summer before entering second year.
The third year includes small group supervision, reflective practice, and advanced counselling and psychotherapy theory and its application. However, the main focus will be on research. Courses are taught and supervision provided by both core staff and other practitioners from varied theoretical orientations. Humanistic theory underlies the course. Psychodynamic and systemic perspective are also emphasised, and training in cognitive behavioural approaches is provided. Practical placements continue through the summer
Course Content
Taught classes, as well as counselling skills training, supervision and reflective practice modules emphasise the application of current psychological knowledge informed by empirical research in the work of counselling psychologist. The students are facilitated to be aware of current research findings and to incorporate them into their clinical practice.
Year 1 modules include: Small Group Supervision I; Counselling & Psychotherapy Skills Training I; Personal Development I - (Group Process, Personal Counselling); Reflective Practice; Professional Issues in Counselling Psychology and Case Management; Theories and Approaches and Theoretical Issues in Counselling Psychology; Advanced Lifespan Developmental Psychology - Theory and Practice; Psychological Assessment I; Placements I; Research in Counselling Psychology I; and Small Scale Research.
Modules taken in Year 2 include: Small Group Supervision II; Reflective Practice & Research; Counselling & Psychotherapy Skills Training II; Advanced Counselling & Psychotherapy Theory and its Application - Counselling Modalities I; Personal Development II (Group Process, Personal Counselling); Research in Counselling Psychology II; Dissertation Research - Research Proposal & Literature Review; Psychological Assessment II; and Placements II.
Modules taken in Year 3 include: Small Group Supervision III; Advanced Counselling & Psychotherapy Theory and its Application - Counselling Modalities II; Dissertation Research – Doctoral Dissertation; and Placements III.
Personal development work, including individual therapy, is required throughout 3 years.

The Doctor of Psychological Science in Clinical Psychology is a taught programme that provides professional training in clinical psychology. The programme is provided in partnership with clinical psychology services in the Health Services Executive and other agencies. The programme’s objective is to produce competent and capable clinical psychologists for the health service by providing high quality training in the clinical, academic and research elements of clinical psychology.

Who Teaches this Course
Requirements and assessment.
Assessment is through coursework and the evaluation of clinical competence on placements. The coursework involves three essays, four Reports of Clinical Activity, Small Service-Related Research Projects, one Systematic Review, and one Large Scale Research Project/Thesis. Trainees must also complete and pass four supervised clinical placements. The thesis will be examined orally by external and internal examiners.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must hold a degree or PDip in psychology recognised by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) as granting eligibility for graduate membership of PSI. The qualification must be at least upper Second Class Honours level (barring exceptional circumstances). Qualifications deemed equivalent by the College of Arts may also be accepted.
At least one year of practical and/or research experience relevant to clinical psychology is generally required. Successful applicants are expected to have a means of transport to enable them to participate in all elements of the programme, including undertaking supervised clinical placements in health settings.

This programme provides trainees with a thorough and integrated training in academic, practical and research aspects of clinical psychology through teaching blocks, supervised clinical placements and supervised clinically relevant research projects.
Clinical competence is developed in supervised placements in child and adolescent, adult, disability, and elective settings over the programme’s three years. The placements provide trainees with experience of clinical psychology practice under the supervision of experienced clinical psychologists. Trainees have placements in mental health settings, working with both child and adult clients, and in services for people with learning disabilities. Other placements include services for elderly people, rehabilitation services, services for people with acquired brain injury, services for people with addictions, and appropriate settings in general hospitals. The development of personal awareness and interpersonal sensitivity is fostered.
The DPsychSc (Clinical) Programme is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland as a postgraduate professional training course in clinical psychology.
The programme provides basic professional training in many areas of work, including adult clinical psychology, child and adolescent clinical psychology and intellectual disabilities.

Career opportunities exist for professionally qualified clinical psychologists in a variety of health, forensic and social care settings. Opportunities may also be found in educational services and institutions. Most DPsychSc (Clinical) graduates take up employment in the HSE but a small number are also employed within agencies such as the Brothers of Charity Services and the Irish Prison Service.
