The Ph.D. in Leadership Studies at University of the Cumberlands is an online leadership doctorate designed to help you guide educational organizations into the future. You’ll learn the skills you need to lead with empathy and insight, inspire staff and students, and contribute insightful research to your field. Those who are not interested in a concentration can complete the program by choosing courses from diverse areas without being limited to any one area. Students who opt for a concentration must complete their dissertation in a topic that fits within the concentration after approval by their chair. Students who choose not to do a concentration can write their dissertation in any aspect of leadership after appropriate consultation and approval by their dissertation chair.

EDOD 706 – Organizational Learning, Performance, Change

This course covers the history, development and current status of organizational learning, performance and change theory, research and practice (praxis). Students will learn the overall issues in the discipline and to orient themselves to the critical problems and emerging opportunities and challenges. Theoretical foundations are covered as well as philosophies informing theory and research to practice and integration in this applied discipline.

EDOD 761 – Evaluation and Assessment in OLPC

This course focuses on the importance of assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of organization change interventions for stakeholders. Various models of assessment and evaluation are presented, their similarities and differences, strengths and weaknesses, and appropriateness for use in specific types of interventions are explored. Students select a model and apply it to a change intervention they have been involved with and develop basic assessment and evaluation skills, including financial skills for analyzing financial benefits of interventions.

EDOD 766 – Scenario Planning in Organizations

This course focuses on the theory and practice of scenario planning. Foundational texts, theories, and research are covered to provide a background and orientation to scenario planning. Basic organizational strategy concepts are also covered. In teams, students are required to apply scenario planning in an organization they have access to under the guidance of the professor. In this applied learning model, students will gain a perspective of theory applied in practice and making the necessary adjustments to improve performance with scenario planning in organizations.

EDOD 768 – Workforce Development

This course focuses on two major aspects of workforce development: first how to develop a workforce inside a specific organization, and second, the dynamics and trends of workforce development as a national and international industry or discipline. The course first focuses on the practical tools for developing, managing and leading a micro-workforce in a given company, including the dynamics that are in play. In addition, major trends and research themes that cut across a variety of disciplines and are relevant to national and international workforce dynamics are examined.

EDOD 769 – Theory and Practice of Change

Examination of the history, nature, theory and informing research on organization development and change management in organizations. Different types and models of organization development, organizational change theories and models are examined along with their implications for effecting and managing change in different performance/organization settings.

EDOD 772 – Theory Building in Applied Disciplines

This course focuses on a general methods approach to theory building in applied disciplines. Foundational texts, perspectives, approaches and research are covered to provide a background and orientation. Students apply principles in the initiation of a new theory in some domain of interest, and use course principles to critique existing theories.

EDOD 773 – Systems Leadership

This course focuses on a systems approach to leadership in organizations. Foundational texts, perspectives, approaches and research are covered to provide a background and orientation. Students apply principles in the examination of leadership practices in an organization to which they have access. Applied learning dominates the course, exposing students to real examples of leadership and leadership development practices in a variety of systems and settings.

EDOD 792A – Research Seminar – Initiating your Research

This course is positioned at the conclusion of program content courses. The premise is to begin more seriously entertaining dissertation topics and ideas from a variety of research methodologies, perspectives and practical approaches. Instructors will lead students through the consideration of their potential research topics from 2-3 different research design approaches to illustrate the pros and cons of each.

Edrm 700 – quantitative research methods.

The basics of quantitative research including foundations, philosophies, and different premises of knowledge creation are covered in the context of organizational research.

EDRM 701 – Applied Linear Models – Educational Research

A specific quantitative technique and set of analysis tools are covered for predictive approaches to regression. Includes bivariate regression, multiple regression, linear regression and other analysis techniques based on the general linear model.

EDRM 702 – Foundations of Educational Research

Philosophical, theoretical, and ethical foundations of educational research.

EDRM 703 – Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis

A specific quantitative technique and set of analysis tools are covered for longitudinal research studies.

EDRM 705 – Qualitative Data Analysis

Basic methods of data collection and analysis are covered for qualitative research studies. Topics include interview techniques, interview structuring approaches, data collection and categorization including using software and manual techniques. Major analysis techniques are covered including the constant comparative method among others.

EDRM 706 – Analysis of Variance – Educational Research

A specific quantitative technique and set of analysis tools are covered for a variety of research designs involving the comparisons of two groups.

EDRM 707 – Quantitative Data Collection Methods/Analysis

Basic methods of data collection and analysis are covered for quantitative research studies. Topics include overview of survey design, data normality, standard assumptions, skewness, kurtosis, and an introduction to some of the major quantitative research designs and analysis methods.

EDRM 708 – Narrative Inquiry

Edrm 772 – proposal development.

This course features time spent on developing and critiquing possible dissertation proposal ideas. The purpose of the course is to provide significant opportunities for students to make progress on their dissertation research proposals and for professor feedback on dissertation structure, design, review of relevant literature, and analysis method selection.

The organizational learning, performance, and change Ph.D. program holds classes in downtown Denver, but also utilizes online learning tools to facilitate collaboration and supplement coursework. Faculty work closely with students as mentors on coursework, the application of theory, and the development and completion of dissertation research.

The small cohort size of approximately 20 students, the fact that faculty are experienced change agents and researchers, and the use of discussion, projects, and papers all enhance the student-faculty relationship. The student-student relationship is also vital to add a personal dimension to the small group activities that are an integral part of the program.

The program is very selective and looks for a diverse group of students. Applicants must have significant work experience, a strong belief in the application of research to define problems and discover solutions, and the drive to apply solutions for the betterment of individuals within organizations and the organizations themselves. Throughout the program, faculty will challenge students to publish and present their finalized projects, papers, and research within relevant publications and at conferences.

Susan A. Lynham, Ph.D.

Dr. Lynham is an associate professor at Colorado State University and Chair of the Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change (OLPC) Program in the School of Education.

She earned her M.A. degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of St. Catherine, Minnesota. Her M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Human Resource Development are from the University of Minnesota, where she graduated in 2000. Susan has over 20 years practical experience in human resource development (HRD), with a special passion for organization development (OD), and has consulted and presented nationally and internationally in these areas. She has also taught at a number of academic institutions during her career, including the University of Minnesota, Louisiana State University, and Texas A&M University.

Susan focuses her teaching and research expertise in the areas of responsible leadership, scenario planning based leadership development, national human resource development, constructivist inquiry, and theory development in applied disciplines. She is an engaged member of the HRD scholarly community, both locally and abroad. As such she has served as an elected board member of the Academy of Human Resource Development, is the past Editor-in-Chief of the Academy of Human Resource Development journal Advances in Developing Human Resources, and serves on the editorial board of a number of core journals in the field.

A native of South Africa, Dr. Lynham enjoys regular visits to her home country—for purposes of both pleasure and work! The diversity of her background enables her to study and practice her field across a spectrum of national cultures, and contexts of complexity.

Thomas J. Chermack, Ph.D.

Thomas Chermack, OPC Faculty

Tom is a Professor in organizational studies at Colorado State University, where he serves as chair of the university’s Ph.D. program in Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change (OLPC). Tom teaches courses on scenario planning, human expertise, analysis in organizations, change management, and organization development. With a focus on the theoretical foundations and outcomes of scenario planning, Tom's research has won several awards for excellence based on demonstrating the benefits of scenario planning.

Tom is also the founder and Director of the Scenario Planning Institute , an organization that documents scenario planning activity, tracks research, facilitates seminars, and consults with organizations nationally and internationally.

In addition to his academic activities, Tom maintains his passion for serving industry and public clients as an advisor through Chermack Scenarios, a scenario planning consultancy. Tom facilitates scenario planning projects that yield insights resulting in an enhanced ability to navigate environmental uncertainties.

When will the next cohort begin?

The next application term is for Fall 2024.

Where and when do classes meet?

Fall 2024 cohort classes will take place at CSU Spur campus in Denver. Class sessions will meet eight Saturdays per semester. Students enroll in two courses, one held in the morning and one in the afternoon with an hour break in between.

Do I have to write a dissertation?

Yes, this degree requires you to complete a dissertation. You will work directly with your advisor to identify your topic of interest.

Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT in order to apply to this program?

If i have to drop a semester, is that a problem.

The OLPC Ph.D. is delivered in a cohort model where students begin and end the program together. Students are encouraged to commit to the full duration of the program to ensure they stay on track and are able to complete coursework in eight semesters. If you are required to skip a semester, your graduation will be delayed until appropriate arrangements can be made with your advisor to make up the coursework.

How much do books cost?

Books typically cost $200-$250 per semester.

What are typical assignments, and how much time is spent preparing outside of class?

Much of the coursework is centered on completing projects, case studies, papers, reading assignments, and presentations. Students work on individual and group assignments, and it is recommended that 10-15 hours per week is spent outside of class.

Are assistantships or scholarships available?

Requirements

The OLPC Ph.D. requires students to complete 48 credit hours, plus a dissertation and faculty advising credits, for a total of 60 credits. Students enter the program in a cohort and complete courses based on an established plan of study.

This program hones a rare combination of applied expertise and research skills. The first four semesters provide students with cutting-edge tools and processes for organization development, including Systems Leadership, Evaluation and Assessment, and Scenario Planning. These courses feature our leading faculty and provide students with skills they can immediately apply to their work. The following semesters focus on research skills. In these courses students will gain expertise to carry out applied research and contribute to the generation of new knowledge in their chosen area.

Faculty assist students in developing and refining their dissertation research at the start of the second year of the program, and students can explore a few potential topics with faculty advice and input. Students then complete a dissertation enabling them to advance their expertise in research design, analysis, and execution in a relevant area that will add significantly to academic and professional literature.

Students take two courses per semester, and each course meets eight Saturdays per semester at the CSU Extended Campus - Denver. All courses within the Plan of Study are required.

Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies

The Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies (LEST) program at N.C. A&T State University – America's largest HBCU – is an interdisciplinary doctoral program designed for people who desire to lead and conduct social and behavioral sciences research in the field of leadership. The emerging interdisciplinary field of leadership studies covers a wide range of academic disciplines such as psychology, sociology, history, political science and religious studies, to name a few. Our students come from diverse professional backgrounds such as business, engineering, law, industry, education, healthcare, the military and community-based organizations. 

The intellectual climate of the program is enhanced through (a) networking in the academy and (b) our partnerships and community networks. These bring real-time academic, economic, political and social justice issues to campus and provide intentional connections for students in community-based initiatives grounded in scholarship and engagement principles. LEST’s goal is to produce leader-scholars who are critical thinkers and models of engaging and successful leadership.

Admission Requirements

The following are needed to be eligible to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Leadership Studies:

  • A master’s degree from a college or university recognized by a regional or general accrediting agency; master's or J.D. degree with minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) from a college or university recognized by a regional or general accrediting agency.
  • Interest in conducting research in leadership studies.
  • Applicants must have at least 5-years of experience in a leadership, supervisory or administrative management capacity in their respective fields or organization ( see the leadership profile document ).
  • A completed Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test, or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) as applicable to the discipline area of the student.
  • An applicant with their highest degree from a non-English-speaking country is required to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination and obtain a score of 600 or higher on the written examination or 250 or higher on the computer examination.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from people who can speak to your likelihood of success in the doctoral program; at least one must be from a former professor.
  • Writing sample (two pages and double-spaced) "Statement of Purpose" explaining the reason for pursuing the Ph.D. in Leadership Studies and the professional work experience or research interest in leadership studies.
  • An applicant will be interviewed by an Admission Committee as part of the admission requirements, prior to the recommendation for acceptance into the program.

Program Requirements

The LEST curriculum requirement includes a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond the master’s degree, with 48 hours of coursework and 12 hours for dissertation research and writing. Within the 48 hours are 18 hours in one of the following specializations: Organizational Leadership , Educational Leadership or Health Services Leadership .

Program Overview

The online Ph.D. in Leadership Studies is a 60 credit hour interdisciplinary program designed for working adults who are interested in exploring leadership using the lens of individual, organization, and society. Students who complete this program will:

  • Articulate biblical, theological, philosophical, and ethical foundations for leadership
  • Exercise effective leadership in higher education and other organizations within their cultural contexts
  • Demonstrate Christian character in exercising leadership
  • Conduct high-quality research and make original contributions to the field.

Coursework includes core courses, ethics (although ethics is integrated throughout), and research courses culminating in a dissertation. Students may select from one of six elective tracks: Educational Leadership, Organizational Leadership, Missional Leadership, Ministry Leadership, Philosophy of Leadership, and Theology of Leadership.

The online Ph.D. in Leadership Studies follows an interdisciplinary design with a focus on four dimensions of leadership studies–individual and personal systems, organizational systems, global systems, and research. The Conceptual Framework of the Ph.D. program is rooted in a commitment to educating whole persons. The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to develop scholarship and professional competencies while encouraging self-reflection and strengthening a commitment of service to others.

Application deadlines: July 15 (begin in August) and November 15 (begin in January). Scholarship deadline is July 1.

Credit Transfer Policy

The Ph.D. program in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies (SLAS) accepts the transfer of qualified  master-level credits to the program as electives. The following conditions must apply:

  • Up to 12 graduate credits (4 eligible courses) from an accredited institution can be transferred to the program.
  • A student must be enrolled in the program before applying for credit transfer and all credit transfer applications must be approved by the Program Director.
  • Transferred credits  must  be related to the program's field of study. Practicum, field-studies, internships, and clinical courses are not considered.
  • Grade of any transferred course must be B or higher.
  • All approved transferred credits will be accepted as electives.

Even though the program is online, for those that would like to connect in person, faculty is on camps for your needs. You also have access to all the services and campus amenities, so we hope to see you around campus!

The Ph.D. program's transdisciplinary design supports a wide variety of research and dissertation topics. The dissertation procedure guides students through the process along four major milestones: candidacy, proposal seminar, proposal defense, and the dissertation. Northeastern University’s online Doctor of Education program provides experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with the practical knowledge and experience they need to transform the learning landscape. Students gain innovative approaches to create authentic change in their communities. The program was selected as the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate's Program of the Year for 2022-2023.

The Doctor of Education program is designed to be completed in three to four years of study—following a fast-paced quarter system in lieu of a traditional semester format. Students choose from five concentrations to create a curriculum that matches personal and professional interests. The program's dissertation in practice process will begin at the onset of your coursework as you identify your problem of practice and develop an action plan—incorporating cycles of data collection and analysis, collaboration, change work, and reflection—culminating in the dissemination of your action research findings. Our students come from diverse disciplines and professions, seeking more than just a degree. You'll gain a practical education that translates to your everyday working environment.

While all EdD courses can be completed online (except for hybrid courses in Seattle and Charlotte), annual in-person two-day residencies are held on campus. Residencies focus on networking and tools for career success and allow you to connect with faculty and fellow scholars to share knowledge and experience. You'll attend residencies* in your first and second years of the program at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.

The Northeastern Doctor of Education degree is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and was selected as Program of the Year by the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate Program for 2022-2023.

*Please note: International students enrolling in the online EdD program will be provided with an option to complete the residency through online participation in interactive sessions with fellow scholars offered during the residency period.

  • You will choose one of five concentrations—higher education administration, innovative teaching and learning, transformative school leadership, workplace learning, and integrative studies—to focus your studies and further customize your curriculum.
  • You'll begin dissertation in practice work at the onset of your program. You'll select a compelling educational/organizational challenge and will be assigned a faculty advisor to support your research throughout the program.
  • All coursework is online—providing flexibility for working professionals. Your residencies will be fulfilled in person*, at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.
  • You'll learn alongside faculty practitioners—engaging with respected leaders who contribute to the field as authors, journal editors, school board members, bloggers, and podcasters.

*In-person participation in the residency is also available for international students.

Concentrations

  • Higher Education Administration: The higher education administration concentration provides an opportunity for experienced higher education professionals to expand their previous understanding of practices within all sectors of postsecondary education—and also advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their understanding of the roles of colleges and universities in our society. Sectors examined include community colleges, four-year colleges, for-profit institutions, and research universities.
  • Innovative Teaching and Learning: The innovative teaching and learning concentration focuses on transforming education through innovation, justice, and policy, by providing engaging opportunities for current and aspiring teaching and learning specialists working in various education spaces. The concentration focuses on teaching and learning both inside and outside the bounds of P-20 schools and focuses on developing and leading innovative curricula as well as professional development.
  • Transformative School Leadership: The transformative school leadership concentration provides innovative opportunities for experienced education professionals who are current and aspiring leaders of early childhood centers, public or private schools, or school districts. The concentration prepares students to lead and transform educational spaces and be equipped to shape the needs of education in K-12, higher education, organizational contexts, and beyond.
  • Workplace Learning: The workplace learning concentration helps professionals gain a deeper understanding of, recognize, and influence real-life social inequalities faced by marginalized populations in the workplace. Courses allow students to advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their knowledge of workplace learning, organizational dynamics, learning strategy, and ethics.
  • Integrative Studies: The integrative studies concentration provides an opportunity for students to design a program of study that fits their own professional goals and includes the required foundation and research courses, concentration courses from any EdD concentration, and electives from the Doctor of Education or Doctor of Law and Policy programs.

Northeastern's Doctor of Education program is designed for experienced professionals interested in deepening their understanding of education, organizational development, and leadership. Throughout the program, students examine various approaches to critical, practice-based issues, learn research methods, and conduct a doctoral research study that investigates a compelling educational or organizational challenge.

Emma Seppälä, Ph.D., is a best-selling author, Yale lecturer, and international keynote speaker. She teaches executives at the Yale School of Management and is faculty director of the Yale School of Management’s Women’s Leadership Program. A psychologist and research scientist by training, her expertise is the science of happiness, emotional intelligence, and social connection. Her best-selling book,  The Happiness Track (HarperOne, 2016), has been translated into dozens of languages. Seppälä is also the Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education.

Rodrigo Canales

Rodrigo Canales Kelli Questrom Associate Professor of Management and Faculty Director, Social Impact Program at the Boston University Questrom School of Business; former Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Yale School of Management

Rodrigo Canales does research at the intersection of organizational theory and institutional theory, with a special interest in the role of institutions for economic development. Rodrigo studies how individuals can purposefully change complex organizations or systems. Rodrigo's work explores how individuals’ backgrounds, professional identities, and organizational positions affect how they relate to existing structures and the strategies they pursue to change them. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that allow institutions to operate and change. Rodrigo has done work in entrepreneurial finance and microfinance, as well as in the institutional implications of the Mexican war on drugs. His current research is divided into three streams. The first focuses on the structural determinants of the quality of startup employment. The second explores the conditions under which development policies and practices integrate rigorous evidence. The third, with generous support from the Merida Initiative, explores how to build effective, resilient, and trusted police organizations in Mexico.

Rodrigo is faculty director of Questrom’s Social Impact Program. Before, he was Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Yale School of Management, where he taught the Innovator Perspective. He sits on the advisory board of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT; he spent the 2014-2015 academic year advising the Mexican government on the US-Mexico bilateral relationship; and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Nature Conservancy.

Heidi Brooks

Heidi Brooks Senior Lecturer in Organizational Behavior

Heidi Brooks teaches and advises on the subject of everyday leadership: the everyday micro-moments of impact that shape our lived experiences. Creating more courageous communities—especially within organizations—is a particular passion of hers. Dr. Brooks specializes in large-scale culture change projects focused on individual and collective leadership effectiveness in organizations. Interpersonal Dynamics, the MBA elective she has taught for 15 years, is one of the courses most in demand at the Yale School of Management (SOM). Recently, Dr. Brooks pioneered the Everyday Leadership course at Yale SOM, where she first taught the Principles of Everyday Leadership. She has also taught Emotional Intelligence, Power & Politics, Managing Teams and Groups, and Coaching Skills for Managers. Dr. Brooks received her doctorate in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University. Professor King’s research examines social networks, social influence, and team dynamics. Her most recent line of work analyzes the role social networks played in the prescription drug abuse epidemic. She is also interested in how to effectively leverage networks to treat opioid use disorders and address the loneliness epidemic. Professor King is the author of S ocial Chemistry: Decoding the Elements of Human Connection . Her research and book have been featured in the New York Times , the Wall Street Journal , the Washington Post , The Atlantic , National Public Radio, among other outlets.

Michael Kraus

Michael Kraus Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior

Michael Kraus is a social psychologist who specializes in the study of inequality. His current work explores the behaviors and emotional states that maintain and perpetuate economic and social inequality in society. He also studies the emotional processes that allow individuals and teams to work together more effectively. Michael’s research has appeared in Psychological Review, Perspectives on Psychological Science , and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology . He currently teaches Power & Politics and Global Virtual Teams in the Yale SOM core curriculum. Michael is also the director of Yale’s summer internship in organizational behavior .

College launches new online MSED in Ed Studies w/Concentration in Higher Ed Systems, Policy, Leadership

Starting in the Fall semester of 2024, the College of Education will launch a new master’s program in Educational Studies with a concentration in Higher Education Systems, Policy and Leadership .

The master’s will focus on preparing leadership-ready graduates who challenge the status quo of PK-22 education both domestically and internationally. University employees may find this a great opportunity for professional development and growth.

This 30-credit degree leads to a non-licensure master’s concentration to engage students in critical thinking about PK-22 educational systems, leadership, and governance, and current issues and policies impacting the internal and external PK-22 educational environments. The program features the integration of select PK-22 and higher education courses that explore the cultural, historical, economic, and social factors present in contemporary education systems. It will also include course offerings in educational leadership, governance, policy, finance, law, and international education.

“We’re thrilled to offer this new non-licensure pathway for higher education professionals who might want to pursue leadership roles in student, academic, or financial affairs spaces, both internal and external to higher education institutions,” said Terron Phillips , clinical assistant professor of higher education. “Contemporary higher educational leadership requires the pairing of foundational field knowledge and skill with boldly innovative vision toward addressing difficult issues in the field; these are the tools with which we aim to equip our graduates.”

Communicating Effectively

Communication is essential for successful leadership. Leaders must communicate their vision, expectations, and opinions clearly and effectively. This helps them build strong relationships with employees, colleagues, and collaborators outside of the organization. The following habits contribute to effective communication: 3

  • Active listening: Listen and reflect before responding. Focus on what others are saying without interrupting. Paraphrase what you’ve heard to ensure comprehension and validate the speaker’s perspective.
  • Acknowledgement: People are more likely to support leaders who acknowledge their ideas and responses. Effective leaders take the time to explain the rationale behind their decisions. 3
  • Demonstrating empathy: Empathy—putting oneself in others’ shoes to understand their experiences, feelings, and perspectives—fosters trust, collaboration, and stronger relationships. Failing to be empathic can cause employees to shut down and stop communicating.
  • Gathering information: When employees and colleagues offer opinions, effective leaders ask for more information. Being curious and approachable encourages people to share challenges that may have been unknown otherwise. This builds a collaborative rapport between leaders and their teams—and between people, overall.

Leading Through Innovation and Change

It’s hard to overstate the importance of strong leadership in times of change . Whether adding or reducing staff, adopting new technology, modifying processes and workflows, moving to a new workspace or employment structure, or evolving to meet new developments in the industry, the leader who can navigate through the unfamiliar with grace and confidence is a tremendous asset.

Effective leaders anticipate and respond to what comes. This means being adaptable and open to innovation and creativity—including experiment, risk, and learning from failure. If employees are dissatisfied, wise leaders listen and put forth the effort to change what they can. 1
