50 Best Colleges for Chemical Engineering – 2024

April 8, 2024

best colleges for chemical engineering

Except for a few schools like Lafayette College, the institutions on our list of best colleges for chemical engineering are universities or institutes of technology with a heavy focus on STEM fields of study. Chemical engineering is a rigorous major that immediately immerses undergraduate students in high-level math and science classes, and typically on minimal exposure to outside disciplines. For example, a freshman Chemical Engineering major at Berkeley, which cracks our list of top schools, takes courses in Physics, Calculus, Computer Programming, and Chemistry right off the bat. All of the schools below churn out future employees of major corporations such as Dow Chemical, DuPont, ExxonMobil, and BASF.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Institute of Technology

  • Atlanta, GA

Academic Highlights: Georgia Tech’s engineering and computer science programs are at the top of any “best programs” list. Being a large research university, the student-to-faculty ratio is a less-than-ideal 22:1, leading to some larger undergraduate class sections. In fact, 49% of courses had enrollments of more than thirty students in 2022-23. On the other end of the spectrum, 8% of sections had single-digit enrollments. In terms of total number of degrees conferred, the most popular areas of study are engineering (51%), computer science (21%), and business (9%).

Professional Outcomes: More than three-quarters of recent grads had already procured employment by the time they were handed their diplomas. You will find graduates at every major technology company in the world. The median salary reported by that group was $80,000. Many remain on campus to earn advanced engineering degrees through Georgia Tech, but the school’s reputation is such that gaining admission into other top programs including MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley, Stanford, and Caltech.

Boasting an enviable 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio and with 78% of course sections possessing an enrollment under 20, face time with professors is a reality. Many departments carry a high level of clout, including biomedical engineering, chemistry, English, and international studies. Biology, neuroscience, and computer science, which happen to be the three most popular majors, can also be found at the top of the national rankings.

Professional Outcomes: The Class of 2022 saw 94% of graduates successfully land at their next destination within six months of exiting the university; 66% of graduates entered the world of employment and a robust 19% went directly to graduate/professional school. Fellowship empowers chee graduate student to develop sustainable water technology.

The Engineering Dean’s Fellow contributes to finding sustainable solutions to water scarcity.

phd scholarship chemical engineering

During Jeb Shingler's 18-month stint as a solar electrician in Tucson, the work he did sparked a passion for renewable energy. Shingler followed his passion to the University of Arizona College of Engineering and plans on combining his solar skills with environmental engineering to address a critical resource in Western states: water.

“I want to use the skills and knowledge I am gaining to develop new technologies to assist communities with practical solutions for water and energy security,” said the 2023-2024 Engineering Dean’s Fellow.

Shingler, a CHEE doctoral student who also earned his master’s degree in environmental engineering at the UA, is developing a hybrid membrane system that produces freshwater from saltwater.

The system is powered by photovoltaic panels – which convert thermal energy into electricity – and solar panels, which convert solar radiation into heat. The energy produced by these panels drives the distillation process.

Shingler will also investigate how the technology handles fluctuating solar power due to weather changes; the addition of automatic system controls and thermal efficiency.

His project, Water Resiliency and Self-Sufficiency in the Arid Southwest, is funded by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.

Labs located at the Water and Energy Sustainability Center – collocated with the Pima County Water Reclamation Facility – offer Shingler a unique opportunity to work with wastewater and reclaimed water.

“I chose the UA because I have the opportunity to conduct research I am passionate about at a place that is truly one of a kind,” said Shingler.

The fellowship allows Shingler to take programming classes to develop more advanced simulation models for his research.

David W. Hahn, the Craig M. Berge Dean of the college, funds the Engineering Dean's Fellowship with the help of the Craig M. Berge Deanship along with donor support through the annual Dean's Fund for Excellence. The fellowships expand the college’s doctoral program by providing multi-year salary and stipends to exceptional early-career PhD students.

“The recipients of our graduate fellowships are some of the most outstanding applicants to our graduate programs,” said Kelly Simmons-Potter, the college’s associate dean for academic affairs.

“The ability to provide research fellowships to these students can be a critical factor that enables them to pursue their graduate educational and research goals, to the benefit of both their careers and the broader fields of engineering.”
