Seattle University, while not highly selective, is a well-regarded and prestigious Jesuit University. Thus, it is important to write a strong essay that incorporates aspects of the Jesuit ethos—such as personal growth, academic excellence, and justice—to help your application stand out. In this post, we’ll go over a supplemental essay that an accepted student submitted to Seattle University, and outline their strengths and areas for improvement. (Names and identifying information have been changed, but all other details are preserved).

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the intricacies of the human body. From the human brain operating to our spleen regulating the number of blood cells—our vessel of life is the greatest mystery to humanity.

 As a black muslim woman, I am drawn to SU’s commitment to serving good to our greater community. I understand the history of medicine and minorities and how we need more people like me in academia. In the future, I want to advance medical equity by majoring in Biology and following a Pre-med track. I am eager to take classes like General Biology with Professor Brenda Bourns and Anatomy and Physiology 1. 

Given my experience in a professional lab, I am eager to continue researching both on-campus and off-campus opportunities. I am excited to see that 83% of SU’s STEM majors engage in research. To establish my validity as a future doctor, I plan to publish research studies into SUURJ where I can share work I plan to do with faculty and fellow students. 

Growing up Muslim, I was taught to prioritize education and its impacts on society. I am drawn to SU’s Jesuit tradition for cultivating students to develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and their community and making ethical choices in life. Being a part of SU’s community fits not only my spiritual side as well future goals of becoming a doctor. 

What the Essay Did Well

This is a good example of a “ Why School? ” essay because we learn about what drew this student to the pre-med path and how she intends to use Seattle University’s resources to achieve her goals. Not only does she explain she wants to pursue medicine, but she pinpoints a niche facet (advancing medical equity) she wants to focus on and connects it back to her background, thus making her interest personal.

From the very beginning of the essay, we get a sense that this is a student who has chosen to surround herself in the medical and biological field both inside and outside the classroom. She mentions functions of body parts, which she would’ve learned about in a biology class, and her experience working in a professional lab. Showing the reader how her passion bridges different spheres reinforces her serious interest in medicine.

She also does a good job of mentioning a class she wants to take with a professor and the research she wants to conduct while on campus. “Why School?” essays should have a large emphasis on the college’s offerings that will allow the student to pursue their goals, and this essay dedicates the two middle paragraphs to SU’s programs. Although she didn’t have space to fully expand, there was context for the class and the research that explained why these are important to her.

What Could Be Improved

While this essay did a good job of connecting the offerings at Seattle University to the student’s interests, she could have done a better job of expanding on why these particular programs at this particular school are necessary for her to accomplish her goals. Rather than picking generic classes pre-med students take at any college, she should have picked ones that are unique to SU and fit into her niche – i.e. a class on health inequalities in the U.S. 

Additionally, she name-drops a professor she is excited to work with, but doesn’t address what about this professor, or her prior research, draws the student to working with her. Including this “so what?” element in these types of essays is what takes them from good to great. Adding in those details about how something that is unique to SU will help her achieve her goal of becoming an equitable doctor will compel admissions officers to feel like they must admit this student or they will be robbing her of the chances to accomplish something extraordinary.

Common App Personal Essay

The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. All first-year applicants are required to submit the following:

• Completed Common Application with essay, application fee and writing supplements

• Seattle University is test-optional. If you would like your ACT or SAT results to be considered as part of your application, you will note this on your Common Application and will be required to submit official test scores from the testing agency.

Seattle University Admissions employs a test-optional application review process for all first-year applicants. You may choose whether or not you would like to have your ACT or SAT test scores included in the holistic review of your admissions application.

If you choose to submit your test scores, Seattle University will use the highest sub-scores on both the ACT and SAT Reasoning test when making admission and course placement decisions.

International Students

Although international students are not required to submit the SAT or ACT, the Admissions Office recommends you take either exam and submit your scores.

Add Seattle University to your schools in the Common Application. When you reach SU’s school-specific portion of the application, you may elect to not report your scores. Adjustments can be made to your test-optional decision until your Common Application is submitted. After you have submitted you cannot change your test-optional status.

Admissions employs a holistic review process using transcripts, coursework, grade trend, recommendation letters and other application materials not including SAT or ACT test scores.

If admitted to the university, you will be admitted directly to the program for which you are applying, a pre-advising program or a different major that aligns better with your high school coursework.

No. If you feel that your academics are well-represented without standardized test scores, we will employ a holistic review process using the other elements of your application. 

If you apply test-optional, consideration for scholarships and financial aid will remain the same as it will for those applicants applying with standardized test scores. 

Test scores must be received no later than November 15 for those applying for Early Action and no later than January 15 for those applying for Regular Decision admission consideration.

We will provisionally accept self-reported scores from the Common Application to complete applications, but you are required to send official scores if they choose to attend SU. 

Applying as a Running Start or Dual Credit Applicant

Running Start is a Washington State program that allows qualified high school juniors and seniors to enroll tuition-free in community college courses while completing high school diploma requirements. Other states may refer to a similar program as dual credit.

Credit earned in Running Start or dual credit programs may apply to both high school graduation and toward future college degree completion at state colleges and universities in Washington. Generally, a five-quarter credit course equates to one high school credit.

Explore the Process

Running Start and dual credit students who graduate from high school in the same year as you begin your course of study at Seattle University, or are attending college for the first time since high school graduation will be considered first-time first-year, and should follow the usual application procedures and deadlines for  first-year applicants . Running Start or dual credit students who have completed prerequisite classes for nursing have an opportunity to be considered for the transfer (2-Year) cohort; interested applicants must follow the outlined procedures  and meet the requirements to be considered.  

You will be considered first-year students for eligibility for financial aid. Please refer to the  Finances  section for more information. 

Seattle University has developed transfer guides as a resource for planning to transfer credits from Washington state community colleges and some colleges out of state. Please refer to the Transfer Equivalency Tool   to see how your Running Start and dual enrollment credits may apply to Seattle University. For information on how your college credits will apply to Seattle University's Core Curriculum, please refer to the Core Curriculum website. 

Seattle University is pleased to offer the opportunity for direct entry to our majors for highly qualified applicants at the time of admission. Due to the cohort nature of our Nursing program, you can elect to be reviewed for both the 4-year program and the 2-year Transfer program.

• 4-year program:  regardless of prior college credit earned, students spend their initial two years completing the Core Curriculum and Nursing prerequisite courses to begin Nursing course sequencing at the end of sophomore year.
• 2-year program:  students who have completed a  Direct Transfer Associate's degree and all prerequisite requirements through Running Start may be eligible to begin Nursing course sequencing in their first quarter on campus. 

Running Start students interested in being considered for the 2-year Program can indicate their intent on the Common Application.  

Running Start students who would like to be considered for the 2-year Transfer Cohort must: 

• Apply  to Seattle University as a first-year applicant by the November 15th Early Action Deadline  
• Complete additional application requirements found in the Redhawk Admissions Portal once they have submitted the Common Application.   

If you are not admitted to the transfer cohort, you will be automatically considered for the 4-year program and will be notified in early March. 

Seattle University is pleased to offer the opportunity for direct entry to our majors for highly qualified applicants at the time of admission. Due to the cohort nature of our Diagnostic Ultrasound program, you can elect to be considered for both the 4-year or the 2-year Transfer Program:

• 4-year program: regardless of prior college credit earned, students spend their initial two years completing the Core Curriculum and Ultrasound prerequisite courses to begin Ultrasound course sequencing at the end of sophomore year.
• 2-year program: students who have completed a Direct Transfer Associate's degree and all Transfer Ultrasound prerequisite requirements through Running Start (or another dual credit program) may be eligible to begin Ultrasound course sequencing in their first quarter on campus. 

Running Start students interested in being considered for the 2-year Program must confirm their intent in their Common Application for admission to Seattle University.  

If you would like to be considered for the 2-year Transfer Cohort, you must: 

• Apply to Seattle University as a first-year applicant by the January 15th Regular Decision Deadline  

Competitive applicants will be considered for the transfer cohort. If you are not admitted to the transfer cohort, you will be automatically be considered for the 4-year program and will be notified of your admission in early March. 

Applying as a​​ Homeschooled Applicant

Seattle University recognizes many paths to being prepared for rigorous academic work at the collegiate level. You are welcome to apply if you have received your education through homeschooling experiences.

In order to maintain consistency in how we read applications, we have additional application requirements if you have been homeschooled.

Application Requirements

The Homeschool questions on the School Report form of the Common Application completed by the homeschool supervisor (the person responsible for education plan and overseeing instruction). 

All official transcripts, including a detailed official homeschool transcript signed by the homeschool supervisor. The homeschool transcript should include detailed course descriptions, texts used and the minimum number of hours per week of instruction.  

Official transcripts are also required for any additional coursework completed or in progress in a non-home school setting, including traditional secondary schools, colleges, universities or any other type of school where credit was or will be received. Official transcripts of all completed or in-progress coursework are required from all original sources even if the homeschool transcript includes them.  

Note: This fulfills the "official transcript" requirement of first-year applicants. Please also be aware of the minimum secondary school course requirements for all first-year applicants.  

One additional letter of recommendation from a non-relative (including requirements for all first-year applicants, this means that you will be submitting a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation). This is a total of two letters from non-relatives and one School Report from the counselor. Preferably, this additional recommendation will be from a teacher who has taught you within the last three years in an academic subject.

If the homeschool supervisor is the only teacher and counselor, two additional letters of recommendation are still required from non-relative sources familiar with your academic quality, work ethic and/or character.  

Homeschool applicants are required to show additional non-home-school-setting assessments in three academic areas: English, mathematics and laboratory science.

The following options note the methods through which these assessments may be displayed.   

If you took the SAT as part of the standard admissions requirements, you must show additional assessments in English, mathematics and laboratory science (laboratory science constitutes natural sciences such as biology or chemistry but does not include social sciences such as psychology). This can be completed through one of these options:   

• ACT results (writing portion recommended).  
• AP test results in math, lab science and either English literature or English language.  
• IB test results in math, lab science and English.  
• CLEP exam results in math, lab science and either English literature or English composition.  
• At least one course in each area - math, lab science, and English - completed with an official transcript from a traditional, accredited secondary school.  
• At least one course in each area - math, lab science, and English - completed with official transcripts from a regionally accredited college or university (includes Running Start credits at Washington State community colleges).  
• A sufficient combination of options above showing assessments in English, math, and lab science. For example, an appropriate display of assessments could include an AP test score in English Language and Calc AB, and an official college transcript with credits in a 100-level Biology course.  

If you took the ACT (writing portion recommended) as part of the standard first-year admissions requirements, you must show additional assessment in English and mathematics. This can be completed through one of these options:  

• SAT results.  
• AP test results in math and either English literature or English language.  
• IB test results in math and English.  
• CLEP exam results in math and either English literature or English composition  
• At least one course in each area—math and English—completed with an official transcript from a traditional, accredited secondary school.  
• At least one course in each area—math and English—completed with an official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university (includes Running Start credits at Washington State community colleges).  
• A sufficient combination of options above showing assessments in English, math, and lab science. For example, an appropriate display of assessments could include an AP score in Calculus I and an official college transcript with credits in a 100-level English course.  

Note: While taking both the SAT and ACT fulfills the above requirement for additional assessments, taking either the SAT or ACT multiple times will not alone fulfill this requirement.  

For students who are applying test-optional to Seattle University and have been homeschooled for the majority of their high school career, we will need to see:  

• AP test results in math, laboratory science and either English literature or English language.  
• CLEP exam results in math, laboratory science and either English literature or English composition.  
• At least one course in each area—math, laboratory science and English—completed with an official transcript from a traditional, accredited secondary school.  
• At least one course in each area—math, laboratory science and English—completed with an official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university (includes Running Start credits at Washington State community colleges).  
• A sufficient combination of options above showing assessments in English, math, and lab science.  

For all students without a traditional numerical GPA, academic merit scholarship consideration will rely heavily upon other aspects of the holistic application review for the determination of merit scholarships. 

Homeschool students with grades from multiple institutions or school settings must submit official transcripts from all sources (see above). The calculated cumulative GPA will include all academic coursework.  

Applying as ​​an Undocumented Applicant

The Seattle University Undergraduate Admissions Office recognizes that undocumented students make important contributions to the intellectual and social life of the campus; Seattle University can admit and enroll you regardless of citizenship.

An undocumented student is a foreign national who: (1) entered the United States without inspection or with fraudulent documents; or (2) entered legally as a nonimmigrant but then violated the terms of his or her status and remained in the United States without authorization (as defined by the National Immigration Law Center). 

Most college-bound undocumented students: 

• have lived in the United States most of their lives
• have been brought to the United States by their parents at a young age
• have learned English - have attended elementary, middle, and high school in the United States
• have excelled academically in high school and want to pursue a college education
• currently lack a way to become legal residents or citizens in the United States 

You should complete the Common Application and may list yourself as ‘undocumented’ under the citizenship field or leave this question blank. Filling out the citizenship question is an optional field on the Common Application. 

Transfer students will complete the Seattle University Transfer application and may leave the citizenship field blank. 

At this time, you cannot legally receive any federally funded student financial aid, including loans, grants, scholarships or work-study money.

However, SB 6523 (The REAL Hope Act), has expanded eligibility for the Washington State Need Grant to low-income, non-citizen students who meet the program’s eligibility requirements and satisfy the residency criteria. Complete the  Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA)  and find out what you may be eligible for.

Ready to Soar: Academic Preparation in High School

In order to ensure that you are academically prepared for collegiate-level coursework, please complete the following minimal program in high school (each unit is equivalent to one academic year of study):  

• English: 4 units
• Mathematics (college preparatory): 3 units
• Social studies: 3 units
• Laboratory science: 2 units
• Foreign language: 2 units
• History: 1 unit
• Additional academic units from the above disciplines: 2 units 

​Direct Entry Requirements 

At Seattle University, you can apply directly to your intended major. For instance, if you select "Nursing" as your intended major, you will be considered directly for admission to our Nursing program. If admitted, you can begin your journey in your major right from the beginning.

As a result, certain programs—Nursing included—have additional admission requirements.

Students who do not meet the minimum requirements of their intended major may be admitted to a pre-major or an advising program to help create a pathway to their desired degree. Please note that Nursing, Diagnostic Ultrasound, and Business and Law applicants must apply for and be admitted directly in order to pursue the programs at Seattle University. 

Competitive applicants to majors within the Albers School of Business and Economics must meet minimum credit requirements above and: 

• Three units of college preparatory mathematics. Pre-Calculus, or equivalent, is not required but encouraged. Otherwise, students must take Pre-Calculus as a business elective at Seattle University. 
• Preferably have demonstrated interest in math, business, entrepreneurship, or other related topics via academics or extracurricular activities. 

If test scores are submitted, Albers requires the minimum scores below: 

• SAT: 540 
• ACT: 23 

Competitive applicants to majors within the College of Arts and Sciences must meet minimum requirements credit requirements (see the top of this page), and the following majors have additional requirements for direct entry admission: 

Competitive applicants to majors within the College of Nursing must meet minimum requirements credit requirements (see the top of this page) and:  

• Four units of college preparatory mathematics (with B grades or higher), including the equivalent of Pre-Calculus (complete or in progress). 
• One year of laboratory Biology and Laboratory Chemistry (with B grades or higher). 
• Demonstrated interest in Nursing, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Science, or other related topics via coursework or extracurricular activities. 

If test scores are submitted, the minimum ranges apply: 

• SAT: 560+ in Math required 
• ACT: 24+ in Math required 

The typical middle 50% of admitted applicants who submit their scores: 

• SAT: 1210-1330 
• ACT: 25-29 

Please note these are not minimums but rather the typical range for admitted students. 

Students interested in Nursing or Diagnostic Ultrasound must indicate so on their applications. Due to the cohort nature of the program, students cannot switch into Nursing or Diagnostic Ultrasound after being admitted to a different major.

Additionally, the following majors have additional requirements for direct entry admission: 

Competitive applicants to majors within the College of Science and Engineering must meet minimum requirements credit requirements (see the top of this page) and: 

• Four units of college preparatory mathematics for admission to any of its specific majors. 
• Pre-calculus, or equivalent, is required for most programs (completed or in progress) 
• B grades or higher preferred 
• B grades preferred in relevant math/science coursework. 
• Minimally two laboratory science courses, including Chemistry. 

If test scores are submitted, all majors—with the exception of Pre-Science or Pre-Engineering—require the minimum scores below: 

• SAT: 560 
• ACT: 24 

Demonstrated interest in STEM courses and careers via academics or extracurricular activities.

Other Types of Academic Preparation

Advanced placement (ap) .

Advanced placement in courses may be obtained through the Advanced Placement exams administered by the College Entrance Examination Board. College credit can be granted if the test scores earned meet Seattle University requirements. Official examination results must be sent from the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) to the Office of the Registrar. Credit for advanced placement courses may not exceed 45 credits.  

Advanced Placement Policy

International Baccalaureate (IB) 

Seattle University credits awarded for IB examinations are not considered to be transfer credits.  In general, students with "higher level" (HL) and limited "standard level" (SL) courses and examinations have been deemed to be eligible for course credit and advance standing with scores of 5, 6, or 7. Credits are awards with the official IB Exam Diploma for a maximum of 45 credits.  

International Baccalaureate Policy

Cambridge Exams (A-Level) 

Seattle University awards credit for A-Levels with the score of “C” or higher. The maximum credit granted cannot exceed 45 and no credit is given for first language tests of foreign language (example: a first language German speaker will not be granted credit for German as a foreign language A-Level). Credit is granted once we have the official Cambridge Exam Certificate, not from another school's transcript. 

Cambridge Advanced Level Policy

Gaps in Education 

Some applicants have taken some time off from academic coursework before applying to Seattle University. Applicants with a gap of 5 or more years may be asked to establish a current academic record at another college or university before applying for Seattle University admission.  

In addition, recent prerequisite coursework may be needed to apply to specific majors. Don't hesitate to contact your  Admissions Counselor for more information. 

English Proficiency 

Applicants for whom English is not a first/native language must demonstrate English Proficiency regardless of English language studies, academic history, residence in the United States or other English-speaking countries, or immigration status.

How to Meet the English Proficiency Requirement 

Seattle University maintains the right to require English Proficiency testing when deemed necessary. The most recent demonstration of English Proficiency (i.e. test scores or course work, as per the policies described below) will be counted toward the English Proficiency requirement, regardless of whether previous scores are higher. Following the submission of English Proficiency score reports, requests for testing waivers will not be considered.

Seattle University allows you to use college-level English composition I to satisfy English proficiency. To meet this requirement, you must meet the following criteria: 

• 45 quarter credits (or equivalent) from a regionally accredited US college or university complete at the time of application. 
• Complete college-level English composition with a 3.0 of higher grade (B) 
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

Seattle University reserves the ability to require English proficiency testing should it be deemed necessary. 

Seattle University will provide a letter of conditional admission to undergraduate students who apply and are admitted to Seattle University, subject to the student successfully completing Level 6 of Seattle Central College's Bridge program, as well as any other conditions that are required to be met.

Seattle University will also accept and transfer approved college-level courses that are taken as part of the Pathway Program and passed with the requisite GPA.To learn more about this, send an email to [email protected]. 

ELS Language Center (US centers only) students who have completed level 112 with a 3.0-grade point average are considered to have the equivalent TOEFL score of 86 and will be exempt from the undergraduate English Language Learning Center. First-year applicants who complete their entire high school curriculum in the United States, parts of Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Bahamas, Jamaica, Kenya, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Belize or at American schools abroad, may have the English Proficiency requirement waived if their transcript does not include any ESL course work and the high school cumulative grade point average and four years of English composition/literature average of 3.0 or higher.

Transfer applicants from U.S. colleges who meet the same criteria as first-year applicants above may have the English Proficiency requirement.

Post-baccalaureate applicants who have earned a bachelor's or advanced degree at Seattle University or at a recognized college or university in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia and who have continued to reside in countries where English is the primary language for at least two years prior to submission of the application, will be considered to have met the English Proficiency requirement.

English proficiency may be met with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or  Duolingo (DET) .

The chart below outlines the English proficiency requirements for general admission as well as admission to the ECLB program. The TOEFL exam has two different grading scales. For more information on what the TOEFL consists of and a list of official testing centers visit the  ETS web site . Both score requirements are listed below. 

College of Nursing and Business and Law applicants for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate English proficiency at non-ELCB level (meaning 86 on the iBT or 6.5 on the IELTS). Exceptions below may apply. 

Students with TOEFL scores in the ELCB range will take a placement essay test upon arrival at Seattle University. Some students may have their ELCB requirement waived based on the results of the placement essay test. 

Applicants who require a TOEFL should plan to complete the exam at a  local testing center .

Eligibility Criteria

The Alfie Scholars are selected from a pool of diverse students. Diversity includes a broad range of people including those from diverse ethnic, racial, and non-traditional backgrounds, as well as those who have socioeconomic disadvantages, have physical or learning disabilities, and have overcome significant other obstacles.

To be considered for an Alfie Scholarship, applicants must have submitted a completed application to Seattle University undergraduate programs through the normal transfer application processes and must have the following additional minimum qualifications:

Enrollment in a community college during the current academic year.

Direct Transfer and/or an A.A. degree by August 1

A minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.5

A rising junior at Seattle University and a minimum of 4 quarters completed at the time of application (students with a previous bachelor degree are not eligible for consideration)

Leadership skills that will enable her or him to serve the community and foster civility in her or his chosen profession

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

A completed application form

A resume/curriculum vitae

A one-and-a-half to two-page personal statement discussing your background and why you feel you are a match for the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University

Social Issue Essay  – Because our mission is to cultivate civility leaders, the program's curriculum helps students use their voice and skills to make an impact on a social issue. In one page or less, please answer the following questions:

1. What social issue do you plan to impact? 2. How does the issue relate to civility? 3. Why is the issue important to you? 4.Why should the greater community care about it?

Two-page response essay – After reading the article “ Embracing Our Shared Humanity: Civility for Our Times” , please answer the following questions: 1. In what ways does incivility cost our collective society and individuals? 2. In what ways does civility benefit our collective society and individuals? 3. In what ways do you foster civility?

One letter of recommendation that speaks to your intellectual ability and capacity to act as a leader in fostering civility specifically, in your major or prospective profession, or in general if you have not yet chosen a major or prospective profession. If possible, the letter should be from a professor at your community college.

After the application has been submitted, the selected prospective Alfie Scholars will be interviewed by the admission committee. The application date is April 30th, 2024. The interview dates are in the first two weeks of May 2024.

Post-Award Requirements

Alfie Scholars serve as role models of leadership in fostering civility in their respective academic and personal communities. In addition, Alfie Scholars will be required to:

Sign the Alfie Scholars Acceptance Agreement to maintain good standing at the university, to participate in the academic programing, and to complete other requirements as determined by the program director.

Attend the Alfie Scholars Junior Summer Program that includes the Philosophy of the Civil Person core course as well as Alfie Scholars curriculum. *

Please note that it is crucial that the time commitment for being an Alfie scholar is considered in your decision to apply for our program. To retain your scholarship, it is mandatory to attend the summer programs. During the first summer, Alfie Scholars attend a two-day synchronous orientation, one-day-a-week synchronous class sessions from the end of June through July, followed by five days a week of classes (with most Tuesday and Thursday classes virtual) from the end of July through August, as well as two full-day conferences. Furthermore, Alfies are expected to complete asynchronous course modules throughout the summer during their time outside of class.

Attend day-long Civility Leadership Retreats the first Saturday each quarter.

Attend the Alfie Senior Summer Program Core Course, Ethics of Civility, in the 2024–2025 academic year.

Participate in extra-curricular programing.

Meet with the Alfie Scholars Program Director once each quarter.

Maintain good academic and social standing.

Attend regularly scheduled individual meetings with program staff.

Apply and maintain eligibility for other scholarship funding, if applicable.

Allow staff to monitor academic performance and university records.

Abide by all university standards for appropriate conduct and community behavior, including campus housing policies.

At Seattle Pacific, we encourage all students to go deeper in their Christian faith, or to explore the Christian faith, and to be inspired to make a difference. SPU’s vision means that you can pursue an education that helps you make the world a better place for all. Our approach to faith pairs the importance of beliefs and understanding with practices that encourage lives of spiritual growth and service to others. Our diverse learning community offers students a place to grow, discover, and embrace great challenges.  

In the space below, briefly (100-500 words) respond to one writing prompt:, 1) how does spu’s vision to “engage the culture and change the world” align with your desire for college.

SPU has said a lot in their intro to these questions, so make sure to take the time to read over the linked material carefully and take note of what inspires you. This prompt focuses on the first sentence, which emphasizes the large-scale impact their graduates make. If you hope to make big waves in your future career, this question is for you! Think about how you want to change the world when you graduate. What aspects of a collegiate experience would best prime you for this? Perhaps the Apparel Design and Merchandising major appeals to you as you aim to make the fashion industry more sustainable or inclusive. Maybe you’re drawn to the faith-based education that SPU provides, which would build a strong foundation for your future career as a social worker. Make sure you’re specific and clear in what you hope to gain from your college experience to further your future goals, as well as what makes SPU a good fit (and vice versa)!

 2) Why are you interested in attending SPU and how do you hope your faith will grow or be developed in SPU’s Christ-centered education?

This second prompt is perfect for students whose faith plays a large role in their lives. First, start with our age-old, classic advice: do your research! Explore the school’s website to pinpoint exactly what you like about them. In addition to their Christ-centered education, make sure to list courses, majors, professors, clubs, or other aspects of their programs and community that appeal to you. Then, explain how SPU’s underpinning of faith will help you grow. Maybe you recently converted to Christianity and you want to be immersed in a supportive community to learn more while you pursue your studies. Perhaps you’ve felt distant from your Christian upbringing and look forward to reconnecting with your spirituality through the University Scholars program. Your essay should accomplish two things: explain what draws you to SPU and describe how you hope your faith will develop and grow. To achieve both goals, make sure you cite specific, unique aspects of the school’s offerings and connect them to your own background or interests.

Serving as a PhD taster programme, the PolyU Research Postgraduate (RPg) Summer School will take place in face-to-face mode on campus this July. Participants will have opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing. We welcome all local and non-local senior undergraduates and master students who are planning to pursue research studies to apply.

The RPg Summer School is a  PhD tasting programme  for participating students to experience wide aspects of postgraduate research studies as well as campus life at PolyU. Participants will have the opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing.

PolyU provides up to HK$10,000 (~US$1,270) scholarship, free student hall accommodation and subsidy of Hong Kong study visa application for each qualified participant, plus conditional offers of admission to our RPg studies .  Senior undergraduates and master students from any discipline of your university who are planning to pursue research studies are welcomed to apply for our RPg Summer School. The application deadline is  5 March 2023 .

The PolyU Research Postgraduate Summer School (virtual mode, 13 July - 27 July, excluding Saturdays and Sundays) not only serves as a PhD-tasting programme for the participants to experience wide elements of research studies but also provides them with an opportunity to get familiar with the support that PolyU will offer.

Summer Research Programme 2023

One-to-one mentorship with an eminent professor Successful applicants will be supervised by an eminent professor in HKU to plan and carry out a research project. The Programme office will help participants match with mentors based on participants’ given priorities.

Scholarship for participants A scholarship of HK$10,000 1 will be awarded to each participant of the Programme upon successful completion of the Programme.  

Financial support  Financial support of airfare up to HK$5,000 1 , and university accommodation up to HK$5,000 1 will be provided on a reimbursement basis.

Prizes and awards for top performers Prizes and awards will be available for top performers in the Programme.  The details will be announced in due course. 

Possible conditional offer for a HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship  Selected students with outstanding performance may be awarded a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship.  The HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship is the most prestigious entrance scholarship to attract top students from around the world to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU. Q1.    Can I apply for Summer Research Programme if I am just a Year 2 UG student? A1:    If you are an outstanding student with excellent academic achievement, or you have ample research experience, you may still submit your application for the summer research programme for the Faculties to consider.  Though senior UG students might have higher priority to be selected.

Q2.    I will have my exam and cannot come to Hong Kong till mid-/late June, can I still apply /eligible for the programme? A2:    If you are selected for the programme, you may apply to attend the Programme via online mode as an exceptional arrangement until you can physically come to Hong Kong.  It is expected that students should arrive Hong Kong in person in week 4 the latest. 

Q3.    I haven’t taken the English Language proficiency test, am I eligible to apply for the summer research programme? A3:    You may still apply for the summer research programme if you have not yet taken the English Language proficiency test, although that would be one of the considerations when selecting candidates for the programme.  

Q4.    I realised that I have submitted wrong information in the form by mistake, what should I do? A4:    Please send in the request for amending submitted information via email: [email protected] . 

Q5.    I have submitted the application and uploaded the required documents, but I haven’t paid the application fee.  What should I do? Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP)

Summer Research@ CUHK

The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from overseas universities to undertake research attachments for eight weeks at CUHK during the summer. Students will be actively engaged in research under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member and earn three credits upon successful completion of the programme.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

USM’s Summer Field Program Offers Students Unique Coastal Research Opportunities

Jump aboard a research vessel and take in the beauty of the Mississippi Sound and unique barrier islands with the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Summer Field Program, in which students can study marine science in a coastal environment.

Located in Ocean Springs, Miss, the Summer Field Program was established in 1947 at Magnolia State Park; for decades, the program has helped students gain valuable experiences in ocean and marine sciences. It is housed in USM’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE), and is offered in two summer sessions, with in-person and online options for undergraduate and graduate students looking to learn more about the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dr. Laura Blackmon, associate director of the Marine Education Center, looks forward to the Summer Field Program’s 77 th year.

“The Summer Field Program will again bring expert marine science instructors together with students from across the region for amazing education experiences,” Dr. Blackmon said. “It has produced a wide network of alumni, including marine science researchers and educators working across the Gulf Coast and Coastal USM, as well as at numerous other colleges, universities, and marine labs nationwide.”

Classes are set both in a laboratory and field work setting, with USM research vessels allowing students to explore the Mississippi Sound. Overnight trips to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico allow students to fully study the beauty of the coastal habitats. On-site amenities include a dormitory, dining hall, library, and a research specimen museum.

The first session, offered in June, features courses such as shark biology, marine ecology, oceanography, coastal environments and restoration, and environmental photography. An online session offers a comprehensive overview of the biology of marine mammals.

The second session, offered in July, will focus on marine conservation and ichthyology, marine biology, and toxicology. An online session will be offered with a focus on marine invertebrate zoology. Academic credit will be awarded upon completion.

Dr. Kelly Darnell, director of the GCRL, described the uniqueness of the program and all it has to offer.

“Our Summer Field Program gives students the unique opportunity to live at the Gulf Coast Research Lab and be fully immersed in the environment and ecosystems they’re studying,” Dr. Darnell said. “For many students, this is their first experience with marine biology – I can’t think of a better or more memorable way to learn than to dive right in.”

Set up by the Innovation and Technology Commission (“ITC”), HKSAR government, the STEM Internship Scheme (the “Scheme”) encourages STEM students to gain innovation and technology (“I&T”)-related work experience during their studies and to foster their interest in pursuing a career in I&T after graduation, so as to enlarge the local I&T talent pool.

We would like to solicit your support for the Scheme through offering I&T-related internship positions to our students.  Internship Vacancy Posting

Student’s Eligibility Verification

• Upon offer confirmation , the employer has to inform PolyU via the Eligibility Verification Form to obtain confirmation from PolyU in relation to student’s eligibility/funding availability. PolyU will advise the employer regarding the eligibility of the proposed student intern (within five working days for local undergraduate students and within 14 days for non-local/postgraduate students) after receiving the student’s online application for the Scheme.
• Student applications have to go through PolyU for approval, which is subject to student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission.
• The Scheme will be closed when the provision of funding is exhausted .

Allowance and Reimbursement

• The allowance for the internship for each student intern is HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days), capped at two months. The abovesaid allowance will be reimbursed to student interns via PolyU .
• The employer can, at own discretion and expenses, extend the internship duration or offer additional allowance to the student intern(s), provided that the arrangements comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.
• The employer is expected to remind and support the student intern(s) to complete online application(s) upon offer confirmation, the required documents for reimbursement after the internship, and communicate with PolyU as early as possible if any problem arises that would affect the reimbursement of the allowance.

Eligibility As required by ITC, the Scheme is open to undergraduates and postgraduates who are:

• local or non-local students enrolling on one of the  full-time STEM programmes  (please refer to the “ List of Eligible STEM Programmes ” on this page) recognised by ITC to be eligible for the Scheme;
• from  any year of studies ; and
• legally employable  in Hong Kong.

Internship Requirements

• Full-time placements in Hong Kong  with duration of  at least four consecutive weeks (i.e. 28 calendar days), allowance  capped at two months .
• The duration of the internship is the number of calendar days in the contract period, and the start and end days of the internship should be working days .
• I&T-related internship positions , i.e. actual work which contains sufficient I&T elements.
• The summer internship should commence  no earlier than May 2023 , with a duration of at least four consecutive weeks.
• The internship funded by the Scheme, as required by ITC,  CANNOT be used to fulfil WIE requirements . However, the internship period IN EXCESS of that required for WIE requirements could be funded by the Scheme. For students who are undertaking an internship period IN EXCESS of that required by WIE requirements, please refer to Appendix 3 in the  Guidelines for Students .
• Internship positions directly subsidised by the Government DO NOT fall under this Scheme (e.g. internship programmes of the HKSAR Government).

Application Procedures

• Students may apply for STEM internship positions through PolyU Job Board or Faculties/Schools/Departments, or source on their own.
• Online Application Form (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
• Copy of Employment Contract
• Signed  Student Charter (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
• Copy of Student ID Card
• Copy of “No Objection Letter” (“NOL”) issued by the Immigration Department (for non-local students only)
• Home Faculty’s/School’s/Department’s approval for student’s internship participation (for research postgraduate students only)
• Approval for student applications will be granted by CPS, SAO based on student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission. The first batch of applications will receive priority consideration for approval. CPS, SAO may consider later batch(es) of applications subject to the funding availability.
• Successful applicants are required to attend an  online pre-internship training workshop  organised by CPS, SAO.
• Students should submit the following items to CPS, SAO  within two weeks upon the completion of internship:
• Assessment/Evaluation Form (to be filled in by both employer and student intern)
• Timesheet (signed by work supervisor)
• Salary Statement (if applicable)
• Learning Journal and Photos
• Submit bank account information to the Finance Office of PolyU (for undergraduates/taught postgraduates ; for research postgraduates ).
• Allowance for summer internship for each student intern is  HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days),  capped at two months . Student interns may receive the allowance under the Scheme for more than one internship place, PROVIDED THAT
• the participating employers are different and the internship periods do NOT overlap; and
• the maximum amount of allowance does NOT exceed three months in one academic year (i.e. current academic year is from 29 August 2022 to 27 August 2023).
• Only students who have successfully enrolled on the Scheme, completed the entire internship as specified in the employment contract, and submitted post-internship documents are eligible to receive the allowance.
• Allowance will NOT be reimbursed to students who fail to achieve 80% attendance rate or cannot complete the internship as planned.
• Unpaid leaves will NOT be taken into consideration in the calculation of allowance under the Scheme, and will be deducted from the calculation of internship duration.
• The employers may, at own discretion, offer additional allowance to student interns, which the arrangements should comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.

Student interns who do NOT receive a minimum wage from employers for the internship under the Scheme should check their eligibility to work as “Work Experience Student” under the Minimum Wage Ordinance , and submit to employers the Confirmation of Student Status and the statutory declaration (Click HERE for details).

• Attendance of pre-internship training workshop is a mandatory requirement of release of allowance.
• Students may expect to receive the allowance around three months after the post-internship submission.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

New-type toroidally focused ultrasonic flaw detectors, whose application provides an appreciable increase in the flaw detection rate with retention of high sensitivity to flaws, are considered. The construction of a flaw detector is presented, the sizes of a gauge for the formation of the toroidal surface of a lens are given, and the technology of the manufacturing of a toroidal lens is described.
