Today, it is very easy to develop healthy food habits. Healthy food habits are simply those eating practices that are good for our physical and mental health.

We tend to eat delicious and tasty food without knowing how healthy or unhealthy it is for our health. But it is not so difficult to know about the nutritional value of any specific food item. You can google about that and you will get a lot of information about it.

There is a lot to say but time is limited and we must respect time.

We all are taught from childhood about healthy food habits because health is considered one of the most crucial parts of life. A rich human without good health can not live his life to the fullest. That is why it is said that “health is wealth”

Today, there is a trend of packaged food. Packaged food is not very bad but excessive use of anything is harmful. These packages can spark curiosity about nutrition when we see the backside of these packets. The food safety department directs these companies to write down the nutritional value behind the packet.

To develop healthy food habits, one needs to understand what our body needs to be healthy. Of course, they are some vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates etc. But one does not need to worry about these. One can follow some simple methods to be healthy.

  • Avoid eating junk food a lot
  • Avoid eating processed food
  • Avoid packaged food
  • Don’t drink cold drinks a lot
  • Eat one food item at a time
  • Take your meals at the proper time
  • Drink a lot of water
  • Drink milk and healthy shakes
  • Eat green vegetables, and pulses every day

Public speaking continues to be one of the most common fears . If you too are nervous about the prospect, then you’ll want to do whatever you can to be as relaxed as possible before your next big speech. While practice is key, here’s something you may not have given as much thought to: so too is a good diet. It’s true – the food you consume the night before and the morning of your presentation can make a major difference in how nervous, sluggish, motivated, or excited you will be when the big moment approaches.

To help you out, we have composed this guide of the best and worst foods to consume before your next speech so you can be on top of your game and make a great impression.

Calming Your Nerves

One of the biggest reasons you may be afraid to give a big speech is that you know how nervous you get in front of crowds. Before even turning to food, it is important to remember that even though you think you are very shaky up there behind the podium, the chances are good that the audience can’t tell. Also, practicing your speech in front of a mirror can also give you confidence because you can see your movements in real-time and revise as necessary

But let’s take a look at your diet and how to avoid food products that can make you feel more nervous than you already are:

Drinking too much coffee can have a major impact on your nerves.

Drinking too much coffee can have a major impact on your nerves. It is wise to drink very little coffee the night before and no coffee at all on the morning of your presentation. The reason is that the active ingredient in coffee is caffeine, which blocks the chemicals in your brain that make you feel tired, and because of this, your nervous system is triggered and you become flooded with adrenaline. This stimulative process can make you shaky and drastically increase your heart rate.

You should also avoid the urge to drink alcohol to “take the edge off” your nerves. Rather than calming your nerves, alcoholic beverages can negatively affect your breathing, speaking, and worst of all, your memory, which you will need to recite your speech. Instead, try foods like almonds, which improve the functioning of your nerve endings, or salmon , which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that help to reduce stress.

Energy And Comfort

Once you get in touch with your body and calm your nerves a little, you will want to get comfortable while still retaining the right amount of energy so you can really drive your points home during your speech. Certain foods can make you feel sluggish and can impact your motivation to speak. For instance, avoid any fast food on the day of your speech as many of those meals include trans fats, which can make you feel sluggish and unmotivated . Consider opting for a vegetarian meal delivered to maintain vitality without compromising focus.

Energy And Comfort

Other foods that can make you feel sluggish include potato chips, artificially sweetened snacks, and chocolate, which, like coffee, will initially give you energy but will inevitably lead to a crash. Instead, go for foods that will give you the proper amount of good energy , like eggs, yogurt, and decaffeinated green tea. If you still feel tired, consider engaging in some light exercise like riding an exercise bike to give you the natural energy that will leave you feeling great.

Making the right preparations to be comfortable for your speech is especially important if you are having to deal with a medical condition like GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Symptoms of GERD can include chest pains, heartburn, and nausea, and you don’t want to experience any of those during your speech. To reduce the effects of GERD and similar conditions, make changes to your lifestyle before and leading up to the presentation, including eating smaller meals and refraining from smoking or consuming alcohol.

Food Can Affect Your Voice

Finally, the food you eat can also affect the strength and clarity of your voice, which is essential if you want to make a positive impression during your big talk. An unhealthy diet leading up to your speech can negatively affect your voice, with coffee and citrus being major culprits, as they can both dry out your throat. Also, be cautious with granola bars, as they can irritate your throat, and soda, which can aggravate your vocal cords.

The way your voice sounds can also be affected by the amount of phlegm you have in your throat. While mucus is essential for swallowing, too much phlegm will irritate your vocal cords and create the need to constantly clear your throat. Several foods are known for being responsible for excess phlegm, especially dairy products, which contain molecules that stimulate phlegm production. Alcohol is, once again, a bad idea because it triggers the blood vessels in your nose which can increase blood flow and lead to congestion.

Food Can Affect Your Voice

If you are having a problem with phlegm, then try food that reduces these effects. Start with apples because they contain a substance called pectin that promotes the movement of saliva. You should also drink water before your speech because it will keep you hydrated and also help to improve your concentration and comfort. Bring a bottle of water up on stage with you and don’t be frightened to take a sip whenever you need it. Your audience will wait.

As you can see, while you may be nervous about your big presentation, a healthy diet can help put you more at ease. Eat right today and give an amazing speech tomorrow.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that, while eating nutritious food is essential for enhancing your health, most people consume an unhealthy diet thus increasing the risk of contracting various diseases such as cancer, reduced brain functioning, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, or being generally obese or overweight (CDC, 2021a). Most people fall into this category, not because they lack the knowledge about healthy eating, but because they chose to ignore the recommended nutritious consumption.

Today, I will highlight some strategies of healthy eating against which failure to follow them would be detrimental to your health.

Motivate the Audience to Listen

Probably, you are thinking that you have been eating unhealthy food and nothing has happened to you. Yet, you may not have experienced some of the risks of poor diet, I am here to illustrate to you why you should always have healthy nutrition to boost your health and avoid common diseases that you could develop in the span of your life.

While I am not a qualified doctor or nutritionist, I have conducted ample and elaborate research on the strategies for healthy eating.

Today, I will explore three strategies of healthy eating, their benefits, and consequences if not properly followed.

  • I will first talk about vegetables and fruits
  • Then, I will talk about proteins and carbohydrates
  • Finally, I will discuss saturated fats and sugar

Now that I have given you an overview of my topic today, let’s explore my first major point.

It is recommended that we consume vegetables and fruits regularly to stay healthy.

Consumption of vegetables is integral to the health of our bodies:

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that people should eat more vegetables to boost their health and prevent themselves from chronic diseases (DietaryGuidelines.gov., 2020).
  • Surprisingly, only 9% of the people consumed the recommended portions of vegetables in their diet (CDC, 2021b).
  • In their book, Vegetables: Importance of Quality Vegetables to Human Health , Asaduzzaman and Asao (2018) illustrate that failure to consume the recommended amounts of vegetables in daily meals is associated with increased risk of cancer and stroke.
  • Moreover, Asaduzzaman and Asao (2018) expound that lack of proper intake of vegetables causes vitamin deficiency diseases such as scurvy (lack of vitamin C) and Sclerosis (lack of vitamin A).

Consumption of fruits is highly encouraged as one of the major eating habits that all people should embrace.

  • In its 2019 publication, World Health Organization (WHO) explains that fruit intake is associated with disease prevention as it enhances the immunity of our bodies.
  • Furthermore, WHO (2019) highlights that fruits reduce the risk of adiposity in adolescents and young children.
  • As its publication shows, failure to take appropriate amounts of fruits leads to increased risk for various diseases such as myocardial infarction.
  • WHO emphasizes that lack of adequate fruit servings in the meals could cause different types of cancer.
  • While fruits are crucial in our nutritious feeding, only 12% of Americans eat the recommended amount of fruits (CDC, 2021b).

TRANSITION: Now that we have talked about vegetables and fruits, let us delve into proteins and carbohydrates.

Proteins and carbohydrates are essential for our bodies

While some people could be vegetarians, the need for proteins in dietary consumption is crucial.

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 indicate that proteins could be obtained from animals such as poultry, meat, seafood, and dairy or plant sources for vegetarians (DietayGuidelines.gov., 2020).
  • Nutrition scholars, Shan et al. (2019) state that proteins are essential to repair body cells besides promoting growth and development in pregnant women, children, and teenagers.
  • Failure to consume the recommended amounts of protein causes various diseases.
  • As Shan et al. (2019) explain, insufficient protein in the body leads to impaired mental health, muscle-tissue shrinkage, weak immune system, marasmus, and ultimately, total organ failure.

Carbohydrates

  • In their article, nutritionists, Shan et al. (2019) note that carbohydrates are needed in the body as a source of the energy we use to perform daily activities.
  • Therefore, it is important to consume the required portions of carbohydrates for our muscles, brain, and other body parts to function normally.
  • According to Shan et al. (2019), failure to meet the recommended carbohydrate intake leads to low blood sugar causing hypoglycemia.
  • Furthermore, Shan et al. (2019) present that carbohydrates deficiency results in ketosis, characterized by bad breath, mental fatigue, joint pains, headache, and nausea.

TRANSITION: Let us now talk about the last major point in my speech, saturated fats, and sugars

It is imperative to avoid saturated fats and sugars

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 recommend that people should limit the consumption of saturated fats to live healthy lives.

  • The food we consume must stay within one’s calorie needs for our bodies to operate normally.
  • People are not supposed to eat excess calories beyond the levels recommended in the Dietary Guidelines.
  • The Dietary Guidelines call upon Americans to consume foods with the least amounts of saturated fats (less than 10% of the total calories consumed per day, DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) reports that excessive saturated fats cause higher levels of blood cholesterol eventually leading to heart diseases or stroke.

Besides, the Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans’ choice of beverages and single food should be nutrient-dense but, with no added processed sugars.

  • A healthy dietary habit limits the amount of processed sugars to fewer than 10% of the total calories consumed daily (DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) posits that consumption of sugar is the root cause of type 2 diabetes, well as increased risk of heart disease and obesity among Americans.

TRANSITION TO CLOSE: As I conclude my speech today, I would like to remind you that the principal capital asset in our lives in good health.

I was also particularly struck by Eric Schlosser's introduction to the speech, as strong a statement as I've ever heard or read about food justice, income inequality, and the necessity of thinking about every part of the food system -- particularly the people who grow and pick and pack it -- when buying food and eating.

Sam Fromartz was also in the audience, and, impressed, wrote this for the site a few days after the speech; Marion Nestle was there, too, and recently wrote this about the speech, which thanks to the efforts of Schlosser, Laurie David, Robert Martin, and others has just been published by Rodale Press. For years Prince Charles has challenged the assumptions of industrial agriculture and criticized the behavior of large agribusiness firms. He's been one of the few world leaders brave enough to say -- publicly, not just privately -- that the current system is unsustainable. In return for that honesty the Prince has been attacked on many occasions by defenders of the status quo. Why should anyone, his accusers ask, listen to what Prince Charles has to say about agriculture? That question has a simple answer: The Prince knows what he's talking about. His criticisms of how we grow, process, and distribute food are right on the mark. And his proposals are sound. The personal attacks on Prince Charles have served to divert attention from the real issue: Our agricultural practices are causing tremendous harm.

As Americans raised in different states and different circumstances but united by a belief that change must come, we want to reform the nation's current system of food production. It is overly centralized and industrialized, overly controlled by a handful of companies, overly reliant on monocultures, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, chemical additives, genetically modified organisms, factory farms, and fossil fuels. Its low prices are an illusion. The real costs are much too high, and they are being imposed on some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the United States.

Organic food, for example, isn't just better for the soil and the land. It's better for the human beings who work the land. There is some scientific debate about the health effects of pesticide residues, at minute levels, in food. But there's no debate about the effects of pesticide exposure upon the 1 to 2 million migrant farm workers who harvest America's fruits and vegetables by hand. For them, the need for organic food isn't an academic issue. It is literally a matter of life or death.

Pesticides are poisons. They have been carefully designed to kill insects, weeds, funguses, and rodents. But they can also kill human beings. The Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that every year, 10,000 to 20,000 farm workers suffer acute pesticide poisoning on the job -- and that's a conservative estimate. Farm workers, their children, and the rural communities where they live are routinely exposed to these toxic chemicals. And what are the potential, long-term harms of the pesticides now being sprayed on our crops? Brain damage, lung damage, cancers of the breast, colon, lung, pancreas, and kidney, birth defects, sterility, and other ailments.

The wealthy will always eat well. It is the poor and working people in the United States who need a new, sustainable food system more than anyone else. They live in the most polluted neighborhoods. They are exposed to the worst chemicals on the job. They are sold the most processed, unhealthiest foods. And they can least afford the health problems that result. Young children and people of color are being hurt the most. During the past 40 years, the obesity rate among American preschoolers has doubled. Among children aged six to 11, it has tripled. Obesity has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Two-thirds of American adults are obese or overweight, and economists from Cornell and Lehigh universities have estimated that obesity is now responsible for 17 percent of the nation's annual medical costs: about $168 billion a year. African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic whites, and more likely to be poor. As upper-middle-class consumers increasingly seek out healthier foods, the fast food chains are targeting low-income, minority communities -- much like the tobacco companies did, when wealthy and well-educated people began to quit smoking.

None of these problems were inevitable. And when things aren't inevitable, that means things don't have to be the way they are. At Growing Power, an organization based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, kids from the projects and the inner city are learning how to grow their own food. They are seeing how greenhouses can feed urban communities without grocery stores, how organic waste can be turned into fresh soil, how farm-raised fish and fruits and vegetables can replace hamburgers and fries as an all-American meal. And as people feel more empowered in their own communities, no matter how poor and neglected, they become better citizens; they see the connections between their choices and the impact on those around them.

Access to good, healthy food shouldn't be reserved for a privileged few. It should be a basic right. And the changes being made at the community level need to be translated into changes at the state and federal level. At the moment, the law too often favors corporate interests over the public interest. The fast food chains and agribusiness companies are earning large profits, while shifting even larger costs onto the rest of society. The game has been rigged in favor of the powerful and well connected, at the expense of everyone else.

The industrial model has caused enormous damage, in a remarkably brief period of time, and we have no choice but to seek a better one. We have no choice but to help those who are being sickened, impoverished, and abused. Because a food system based on poverty and exploitation will never be sustainable.

The founders of the organic movement understood that the health of people, livestock, and the land cannot be separated from one another -- they're indivisible. If you want to achieve one of them, you have to work on behalf of them all. As the Prince noted, it's essential to "consider the whole picture and take steps with the whole system in mind." To do otherwise is to miss the point.

A new food system is now emerging, as more Americans see what's happening, understand the consequences -- and start to take action. This new system will be much more diverse, resilient, and democratic. It will take the long view. Across the United States, communities are rejecting the industrial model of food production and creating a new one. People are shopping at farmers' markets, building school gardens, planting vegetables in their backyards. Perhaps the most important change is a new attitude toward food, a change in mindset. Instead of being passive consumers, eating the junk food marketed on TV, millions of people are educating themselves, changing what they eat and where they buy it. They are becoming empowered.

It's not too late. What's gone wrong in our food system can be reversed. A better way of doing things is still possible. The next generation can be fitter, healthier, wiser, and more compassionate than the last one. Many times we tell or use these words whenever we say phrases like ‘health is wealth’ and ‘fitness is the key’. What does the word health really mean? It implies the idea of ‘being well’. A healthy and fit person is the one when he/she can function well physically as well as mentally. Proper health and fitness do not depend on our own but also on our physical environment and the quality of food intake.

Health and fitness is the most important aspect of our life.  There is nothing more important than health for any human being.  When we are healthy and fit we are able to enjoy our life well. We can talk to our near and dear one, we can laugh, smile, travel, enjoy food, and sleep well.

But when our health and fitness is not up to the mark, we are unable to do anything properly and stay behind. We cannot enjoy eating, watching sports or movies.  Our mood always remains negative and we are unable to talk nicely with our near and dear or even sleep properly.

Our health and fitness are more valued than our wealth.  In fact, our elders were always been focused on the health and fitness part. They treasure it like wealth. To maintain good health and fitness at its best all the time, we need to take care of hygiene and sanitation around us.

We must eat a healthy and complete diet.  We must eat vegetables, milk, egg, etc. Everyone should make a diet chart and ensure that we take a sufficient amount of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.  Apart from eating we must maintain cleanliness in our room, house and nearby surroundings.

Roots Affecting Health and Fitness

Well, there are many factors that are responsible for the staggering health and fitness graph. But the major reason is the personal habit and living style of people. A human body requires 20 gm fat per day. The consumption of just a regular pizza adds 10 grams of fat to the human body; a whopper burger blesses you with 13 gm fat and 100 gm French fries promote 15 gm fat to your body.

All the junk foods are destroying people’s health and fitness these days. Due to the fast-paced life, people are concerned about filling their stomachs rather than considering what they are eating and its effect on their health and body.

As we know that health and fitness play an important role in our overall wellbeing so we should try for a good balance between mind, body, and soul. I have some suggested activities to maintain proper health and fitness. One can start playing games and sports. An active body can metabolize well and so keep us in good shape.

Yoga has got a lot of health and fitness benefits such as flexibility, burn calories, increase blood flow, boosts immunity. Proper food selection leads to eating healthy. The intake of vitamins found in vegetables and fruits, proteins found in whole grains and lean meat keeps us healthy. Eat foods that have less oil are good to control cholesterol levels.

Avoid smoking and drinking as they affect our sleep which is important for the body to remain healthy and in good shape. Exercising improves the general health of the body. One must take at least thirty minutes a day to do some exercises or walk.

As told by Dalai Lama “Happiness is the highest form of health”. Happiness will come only when we will be healthy and fit. But today we live in a world where we value things more than people, work more than family, food more than health and status more than life.

We rush after money and social status and we forget about our health. What’s the value of life if we don’t live healthy and fit. This absurd attitude has ruined our lives and it will continue to do so unless we open up our eyes and see the reality.

Sometimes a family member or friend needs encouragement to make a healthy change. Try these tips to start a conversation about eating healthy.

Say why eating healthy is important.

You can say:

  • “Your health is important to me. I care about you and want you to live a healthy life.”
  • “A healthy diet can help you stay active as you get older, giving you more time to spend with your loved ones and do the activities you enjoy.”

Talk about small steps.

Try saying:

  • “Healthy eating isn’t all or nothing. You can eat healthy and still enjoy the foods you love. How do you feel about trying some small changes?”
  • “Can I help you think of some healthy shifts that would be doable for you? What are some foods or ingredients you would be willing to swap out for healthier options?”

Offer simple suggestions:

  • Be ready with some ideas, like drinking water instead of soda, eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread, or using olive oil instead of butter.
  • Keep it manageable —  encourage your friend or family member to pick 1 or 2 ideas to start.

Take the lead. Do it together.

Offer to make healthy changes with your loved one! You can say:

  • Celebrate successes. Say, “I’m so proud of you for making this change and sticking to it.”

Today, we’re going to talk about health. Health is not just about not being sick. It’s about feeling good, both in our bodies and our minds. It’s about being strong and active, being able to play, work, and learn without feeling tired or unwell.

The first thing to understand about health is the food we eat. Eating the right food is like putting the right fuel in a car. Our bodies need different types of food to work well. We need to brush our teeth twice a day to keep our mouths clean. And we need to take a bath or shower regularly to keep our bodies clean. When we keep our bodies clean, we’re less likely to get sick.

Lastly, we need to take care of our minds as well as our bodies. This means doing things we enjoy, spending time with friends and family, and taking time to relax. It also means asking for help when we’re feeling sad or worried. Just like our bodies, our minds need to be taken care of to stay healthy.

In conclusion, health is about eating right, getting exercise, resting, staying clean, and taking care of our minds. When we do all these things, we’re taking care of our health. And when we’re healthy, we’re ready to learn, play, work, and enjoy life. So, let’s take care of our health, because health is wealth.

The unhealthy secret about the vegan food you’re eating

Switching to plant-based alternatives may be better for the environment but it is not necessarily healthier for you

Vegan foods can contain as much if not more sugar and salt than some meat products

Vegan alternative foods should be labelled more clearly because the public do not realise they are ultra-processed, according to a new study.

While switching to plant-based alternatives for meat, eggs, cheese and yoghurt appears to be better for the environment, it is not necessarily healthier , experts have said.

Researchers have called for vegan alternatives and meat substitutes to be labelled and categorised because they can often contain more sugar and salt than the product they are replacing.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are usually higher in fat, sugar and salt and contain chemicals, colourings, sweeteners and preservatives that extend shelf life.

The team analysed more than 90 studies into vegan alternative foods to get one of the biggest sample sizes to date.

They found plant-based substitutes could be healthy options because they were often higher in fibre and lower in fat, but this was not always the case and the nutritional values drastically varied from product to product.

Vegan alternatives are better for the environment because they produce less greenhouse gases and do not use as much land.

The research, published in the journal Nutrition Reviews, found that some plant-based cheeses had twice the saturated fat of normal cheese, while meat replacements usually had more sugar.

The main primary ingredient, as well as processing techniques and brand, were all vital to determining a product’s nutritional value and environmental impact.

While researchers said all plant-based alternatives are “technically” ultra-processed, they found the nutritional value of some products align with healthy dietary recommendations.

They suggested establishing a “clear division” between products that are less processed and ultra-processed and conducting further studies.

Whole foods ‘gold standard’

Sarah Najera Espinosa, study author at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Although whole foods are still considered the ‘gold standard’ for healthy and environmentally friendly diets, environmental and health outcomes from some novel plant-based foods are promising.

“Our review has demonstrated that some products, such as legume and vegetable-based drinks and legume- and mycoprotein-based meats, have the potential to be a useful stepping stone in the process of food system and dietary transformation if they are carefully selected.”

The research – which excluded tofu, tempeh and seitan, foods that have been part of traditional Asian diets for centuries – analysed more than 90 studies and reports from 2016 and 2022.

Academics said that the “limited evidence” on swapping meat for plant-based alternatives suggest the shift could be good for health, but the results for plant-based drinks were mixed, with links to micronutrient deficiencies.

Both meat and drink alternatives had, on average, the same salt levels as animal products, although meat alternatives contained more sugar.

The team suggested that labelling and sub-categorising plant-based alternatives – along with studies to evaluate how dietary changes impact upon the environment – should be a priority for policymakers.

From Backyard Gardens to National Impact: How One Detroit Native is Leading the Fight Against Climate Change

Detroit, Mich, April 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In a speech delivered ahead of an appearance by President Joe Biden, Detroit native, AmeriCorps member and environmental champion, Za’Nyia Kelly, shared her inspiring journey from a youth concerned about healthy food access and reliable public transportation in her hometown to a proud member of the inaugural cohort of the  American Climate Corps  – a groundbreaking initiative that will put more than 20,000 young Americans to work fighting the impacts of climate change today while gaining the skills they need to join the growing clean energy and climate-resilience workforce of tomorrow. 

The President  announced  the launch of the American Climate Corps website along with a suite of actions at an event at Prince William Forest Park – a national park system site developed by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps and stewarded by the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service.

Below are Kelly’s remarks as delivered: 

Hello, my name is Za’Nyia Kelly.  

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, as the middle child of seven. In the neighborhood I grew up in, there were no major grocery stores nearby with healthy food options. There were times where liquor stores doubled as grocery stores.  

But in elementary school, after I learned about the importance of having access to healthy foods, my mom and I started a backyard garden – I was hooked. From our little backyard oasis, I could see the impact fresh fruits and vegetables had on my family’s health. 

The high school I attended focused on aviation. In between learning to fly planes and build engines, I also learned how flying and different forms of transit contributed to climate pollution. For me, transportation was personal. 

Apart from lacking healthy food options, my entire city lacked reliable transportation. Coming from a big family, cars were expensive, so I had to rely on public transit. A 25-minute car ride to school could easily be a two-hour bus ride. One winter during 10th grade, I got second degree frostbite on all of my toes because I had to walk for miles in the snow when the bus didn’t show up. 

These experiences inspired me to combine my passions, for improving both the environment and the public transit systems as an AmeriCorps member. 

After graduating from Michigan State University last May, I now proudly serve in the Michigan Healthy Climate Corps, working at Transportation Riders United. TRU is a nonprofit dedicated to reducing pollution by improving Detroit’s and the surrounding region’s public transit systems.  

Thanks to President Biden, I’m so excited to be part of the inaugural cohort of the American Climate Corps. For young environmentalists like me, it means so much to know that we have a president who understands the importance of climate change, clean energy and climate justice.

15 men brought to military enlistment office after mass brawl in Moscow Oblast

Local security forces brought 15 men to a military enlistment office after a mass brawl at a warehouse of the Russian Wildberries company in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast on Feb. 8, Russian Telegram channel Shot reported .

29 people were also taken to police stations. Among the arrested were citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

A mass brawl involving over 100 employees and security personnel broke out at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal on Dec. 8.

Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech.

Nicholas Fandos, who covers New York politics and government for The Times, walks us through the intense week at the university. And Isabella Ramírez, the editor in chief of Columbia’s undergraduate newspaper, explains what it has all looked like to a student on campus.

From my visits to working-class areas in Moscow I have gained the firm conviction that the idea of the need to form food detachments has spread through the entire mass of the workers. A “distrustful” attitude is shown only by the print workers, who usually live better than the other workers, paid for by the bourgeoisie which is poisoning the minds of the poor with its newspaper slanders. The class-conscious attitude of the broad mass of the workers to such a basic issue of the Russian revolution as the struggle against famine gives me grounds for believing that socialist Russia will successfully survive all temporary failures and the devastation of the old regime. Even if we do not succeed in speedily dealing with the Czechoslovaks (which is most improbable), the large stocks of grain hidden by the kulaks in Voronezh, Orel and Tambov gubernias will enable us to get through the last two difficult months before the new harvest. The food problem is the most urgeiit problem of our revolution. All workers without exception must understand that the struggle for grain is their own vital concern.

The task undertaken by the food detachments is only that of helping to collect grain surpluses from the kulaks, and not (as our enemies are trying in advance to frighten the countryside into believing) to plunder all and sundry in the countryside .... Manufactured goods, thread and household and agricultural articles will definitely be provided in return for grain.

Steps will be taken to iiial(e it impossible for the detach-ments sent to the countryside to be joined by hooligans and swindlers, who always endeavour to fish in muddy waters. It is better to send fewer people, but ones who are suitable for the job.

It is true there have been cases of detachments being infiltrated by unstable, weak-willed workers, whom the kulaks have bribed with home-distilled vodka. But atten-tion has been paid tothis .... It is necessary to have accurate information of the past history of every worker going with a detachment. Inquiries must be made in the factory coramittee, the trade union and also in Party cells, as to the person-al character of everyone whom the working class entrusts with such an important task.

Party comrades in many factories are unwilling to accept non-Party” people in the detachment. This is quite wrong. A person who is “non-Party”, but completely honest and with no stain on his reputation, can be a very valuable com-rade in the starving people’s campaign for grain.

To class-conscious detachments of this kind the Council of People’s Commissars will give the broadest assistance by providing money and manufactured goods, and also arms.

What matters is that the workers should actively and with the utmost speed take up their own vital cause-the struggle against famine!...

[1] Lenin delivered this speech on the food detachments to workers’ meetings in Moscow and it was published in Bednota (The Poor), a daily newspaper issuied by the C.C. of the R.C.P.(B.). The first food detachments were sent out from Petrograd and Moscow to the grain-growing provinces in November 1917. Mass recruiting for the detachments among the advanced workers began in the sum-mer of 1918, when the food crisis was at its height. The food detach-ments were formed by the Party, Soviet and trade union organisations of Petrograd, Moscow and other industrial centres. There were about 3,000 people in them by June 15, and by the end of August the number had risen to nearly 17,000. In 1918 there were 122 detachments and in 1919, more then 1,000, with an enrolment of about 30,000 men. These workers’ food detachments plaed a big part in procuring food for the population and the Red Arm in fighting the kulaks and rallying the rural poor.
