Anecdotal evidence suggests that, even when academic staff are aware of the existence of a plagiarism policy, many still don't use it. They either prefer to deal with it in their own way, or ignore the issue. In order to encourage increased and improved use of the existing policy, we were interested in understanding staff concerns about plagiarism generally. As part of a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, a 3 hour workshop is devoted to Academic Integrity. At the start of the workshop, participants are asked to complete a survey on their experience and concerns regarding plagiarism, and their awareness of local policies and procedures. Staff are then asked to articulate their single biggest concern around academic integrity, and this collection of concerns and the ensuing discussion is used to direct aspects of the workshop. With different groups, the emerging group concerns will have different flavours; some teaching-focused, some student-focussed and some policy-focussed. The data from the surveys over the last 3 years gives an insight into staff awareness of policies and procedures at our institution as well as highlighting the general ethos and attitudes regarding student plagiarism. This paper will compare the collected data against early results from the IPPHEAE project staff survey. Knowledge about the levels of awareness of plagiarism policy amongst staff has implications for staff development. This paper will give an overview of various approaches to awareness raising and staff development that have been used in our institution, with an indication of the levels of success and factors contributing to this.

In this study, the effect of science and research ethics course on preschool teacher candidates’ possible plagiarism behaviors was examined. Fifteen teacher candidates were asked to prepare a written assignment (pre-test) before the start of the course. Similarly, a second written assignment (post-test) was taken at the end of the course which took approximately 12 weeks. Both assignments received from teacher candidates were evaluated in two similarity/plagiarism software programs and the similarity rates of each student's homework were calculated as a percentage. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used to test whether there was a significant difference between these percentage scores in terms of pre-test and post-test. In addition, teacher candidates’ pre-test and post-test assignments were subjected to document analysis in the context of the matches determined by similarity/plagiarism software programs. According to the findings of the study, it was seen that science and research ethics course could have an effect on possible plagiarism behaviors of teacher candidates. The findings of the study were discussed regarding similarity/plagiarism software programs, course period and literature. Suggestions were made to help teacher candidates and to those who are concerned about avoiding unethical practices.

Abstract: In the last ten years, there has been much research into academic integrity with a focus on plagiarism in developed countries. There is still a dearth of such research in developing countries like Nigeria. This paper presents the results from a larger exploratory study on student plagiarism in Nigerian Higher Education Institution of Learning (Nigerian universities), which is associated with the Impact of Plagiarism Policies in Higher Education Across Europe (IPPHEAE) project. It seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge by focusing on the experiences of previous institutional interventions on student plagiarism issues and their impact on student experience when they study elsewhere. Nigerian students studying abroad had to adapt to diverse teaching, learning and assessment styles under a different institutional system. This resulted in the students struggling when they had to apply skills they had not acquired during their previous study. This study adopted a mixed method approach; 25 Nigerian Postgraduate Students studying in a United Kingdom University were interviewed for the qualitative data and 171 IPPHEAE student questionnaires were completed for the quantitative data. Results from the data suggest that the previous institutional system experienced by the students was quite different from what they met in their present institutions of study in England. As a result, the students struggled to cope with their studies when they had to apply skills they had not acquired.

A great cover page draws in readers. If you use Microsoft Word, you're in luck, because Word has ready to use cover pages. But did you know that Word also lets you create custom cover pages? Here's how to use both.

Word includes some cover page templates you can insert and then customize a bit if you need a quick cover page for your document.

To find them, switch over to the "Insert" tab on Word's Ribbon and then click the "Cover Page" button. (If your window isn't maximized, you might see a "Pages" button instead. Click that to show the "Cover Page" button.)

On the drop-down menu, click the cover page you want to use.

You can now add your document title, subtitle, date, and other information, as well as change the design up a bit if you want.

Creating a cover page from a template is easy enough, but if you don't like any of the built-in designs, you can create your own. You can do this on an existing document, but it's easiest to start with a blank document. We're going to be saving the custom cover page so that you can quickly insert it into an existing document anyway.

You can create your cover page using pretty much any of Word's tools. You can add a background color, picture, or texture . You can also position those elements how you want and even apply Word's text wrapping tools to them.  Make it look however you want.

When it comes to content, you have a couple of options. You can just type the text you want, but that wouldn't make it much of a template unless you want the same text on the cover page every time you use it.

Instead, you can use Word's Quick Parts feature to add document properties to the document. To do that, switch over to the "Insert" tab and then click the "Quick Parts" button.

On the drop-down menu, point to the "Document Property" submenu, and you'll see a bunch of different properties you can insert into your document: author, title, company, publish date, and so on. Go ahead and insert whichever properties you want to appear on your title page.

When you're done, you'll have several fields on your page. When you insert your cover page into a document later on, those fields are populated with the actual properties from the document (and you can also edit them on the fly if you want).

They're super plain to start with, but you can treat them like any other text in Word by applying styles and formatting, centering them on the page---whatever. Here, we've centered them on the page, applied the Title style to the title, shifted things down on the page a bit, and inserted a filigree illustration for a little flair. It's not the prettiest cover page around, but it's a good working example.

Now that we've got our cover page the way we want it, it's time to create a cover page template out of it.

First, select everything in the document (that's why we recommend starting this in a blank document) by pressing Ctrl+A. Next, head back to the "Insert" tab and then click that "Cover Page" button again.

This time, choose the "Save Selection to Cover Page Gallery" command from the drop-down menu.

In the window that opens, give your cover page a name and fill out a brief description if you want. Click "OK" when you're done.

Now when you open the "Cover Page" drop-down menu in the future, you'll see your new cover page template in the "General" section. Click to insert it just like you would one of Word's built-in cover pages.

And that's it. Creating custom cover pages for your document is pretty easy once you know where to look. While you're at it, learn a few more quick tips on putting together professional-looking documents in Word .

How do I embed cover pages in a word document so they can be inserted on other PCs?

How do I embed custom cover pages in a word doc so that it can be shared and used on Macs and Windows PCs other than the one it was designed on?

I've followed several explanations of how to create and save a custom cover page, but it doesn't seem to be available once shared to other computers, so I am assuming I am doing something wrong. It's as though the template is saving to my local templates (and therefore not accessible to other users) rather than being embedded into the word document.

I've followed this miscrosoft answers method where the answer is very detailed and works great when on the Mac I created it on, but the options of Insert > AutoText > AutoText doesn't exist on Word for Windows.

for Windows Word which is also good, but again, when transfered to another computer the custom cover pages disappear from the cover page menu.

Anything I am googling just doesn't seem to offer up a solution for being able to lock the customisation into a document for my company to use as a template.

Any advice as to what I am missing or doing wrong will be appreciated.

In Windows, Word tends to place saved Quick Parts into the Building Blocks template, which is not particularly portable. Here are the steps to include the cover page in your template.

Open the template in Word.

Select the cover page.

Choose Insert>Quick Parts>AutoText>Save Selection to AutoText Gallery .

In the Create New Building Block dialog, change the Gallery dropdown to Cover Pages .

To make the cover pages easy to find, choose Create New Category in the Category list and type a name like .MyCompanyName . The period in front of the name ensures the cover page appears at the top of the cover page list.

Keep Save in set to the name of the template. Click on OK .

You need to be sending a template .

Save the cover page as a Cover Page Building Block in that template. It must be in that Gallery to appear under Insert > Cover Page.

Where can Building Blocks be stored?

AutoText does work in Word for Windows. There are a number of ways to access it.

Insert > QuickParts > AutoText.

You can use AutoComplete .

You can attach a keyboard shortcut to any AutoText entry.
