Exam Warriors by Modi – Book Review

Exam Warriors by Modi book review literature

Book – Exam Warriors Author – Narendra Modi Publisher – Penguin India Pages – 208 Published – 2018 ISBN-13: 978-0143441502 Idle Reading Duration – 4-5 Hours (on-go read) Targeted at – The students (of any age group) who have to face exams Review – 5/5 stars (a must-read book)

While the political aspirants like some reviewer on the wire or first post are calling it ‘an extension to Modi’s agenda’ of wooing the first time voters, I can just take my time and laugh at them – LOL (like the youngsters say it these days). Can only a Congress PM enjoy the liberty of writing a book? Is literature the prerogative of people like Shashi Tharoor with their ‘Why I am a Hindu’ and Chidambarams with their ‘A View from Outside’? We have to think on this. Indian PM, currently, Narendra Modi has been a poet (Gujarati) and he is just extending the list of PMs who have been great authors as well. Nehru had his due for a long time but rarest of the literature produced by him could cater the interest of the readers just after 8 – those were intellectual pieces of papers which needed (and still need) a guide to decoding the encrypted knowledge. Exam Warriors, on the other hand, has been a very popular book since the launch and has been sitting at No 1 on the Amazon Bestseller’s List in India! Why?

Exam Warriors is a book which focuses on the issues faced by students who are going to appear in the exams and that is natural. A student who takes up studies has to face examinations and many a time! Stress, nervousness, worry and negative thoughts are common things with them and they must be aware how to tackle them. Modi tells the same thing in his book Exam Warriors. His idea is clear and his approach is simple. The book has been available in different versions – Hindi, English, and other regional languages.

On a broader perspective, the worry of the opposition about this literary war of the battle of the books is valid. Theirs (Congress’) literature has all been but intellectual and too confined to the tenets of scholarship and wisdom. On the other hand, this single book by Modi has invaded the households very easily – the target is rather easy – the youths of the day and the young ones of tomorrow and the weird worry on the faces of opposition leaders and their well-wishers in the media is evident – it had to be like this.

Well, the book is a must-read by all means as it really does the job it was intended to do. It clarifies the doubts of the students about examination tactics. It tells them how to de-stress and how to focus or concentrate. Modi has used his personal experience and we all know he is perhaps the best communicator Indian politics has ever witnessed! Visually appealing a book that Exam Warriors is, you will find it interesting as well as useful. If you are a student or the guardian of students or a teacher, you have to get a copy of Exam Warriors and let yourself into a world of joy. All the best!

Exam Warriors by PM Modi – book review

Exam Warriors book review

Read the book review of a national bestseller by Narendra Modi, the Indian PM, – Exam Warriors. Aimed at students who are ready to face examinations, Exam Warriors tells the ways to beat the exam stress and do the best. Read below.

Well, PMs of India have had a history of turning to writers and producing a handful of pieces of quality literature. We often get to hear about Nehru and his writings. In other words, this is what, at least, we were being told since our childhood. Nehru was a great writer, anyway! In the recent list updating, we see another PM making it to the popular authors’ list – Narendra Modi. His book Exam Warriors has enjoyed several days as the number one bestseller book on Amazon and continues to be so because people do want to read what Modi has written for the students who fear examinations and he certainly has made a connection with the readers – not only the children but also their parents as well as students at other higher levels. His book offers a visual journey with a bunny as a guide who takes the readers on an inspiring tour to exams…

“Be a warrior, not a worrier.”

And the author, Narendra Modi, is right! Students should focus on preparing for the examination and take it as an opportunity to enhance their career aspects rather than worrying about thoughts which are rather unpleasant and promote despair.

Narendra Modi has written about many elementary rules which will certainly help the students beating the exam stress. He has also mentioned the importance of Yoga and different forms of it during the days of examination. And all the Asanas that he has mentioned have a direct impact on one’s focus and concentration.

More than anything else, the book is not an over-paged and over-hypothesised thesis about exams and their importance in human life. This book, Exam Warriors, simply tells the readers how to take exams as a staircase to a better future and how to start celebrating the days of examinations instead of worrying about our marks and scores. He (the author) has also reached out to the parents through his book. Narendra Modi and his book Exam Warriors will prove to be the better companions for the students who are all set to take the examinations this year and this is certainly the session of exams in our country.

A timely book by the Indian prime minister and something that a common reader can also find interesting. Why I am a Hindu would certainly be out of proportions when it comes to the common readers or the readers of very young age. Exam Warriors must make an impact upon the students of the country because it also emphasises the need for ‘quality education’ rather than ‘quantity education’. It tells the readers that good marks are good but not on the cost of good education and this is really a concern in India for decades.

You must read this book irrespective of whatever you do or whatever is your education level. Modi’s book deserves the praises it has been receiving these days. You can secure your copy of the national bestseller by visiting the Amazon link below:

Exam Warriors – Overview

10 things our pm suggests us during exams.

So exam season is going on, and a lot of students have been writing to us, stating that they are tensed and worried. We had released a video for how not to panic before exams and manage pre-board stress, which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/Lt_bIsbUSKk

We also came across the book written by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi – Exam Warriors. The book deals with the same problem – how to de-stress before and during exams, and we are highlighting the suggestions that our PM gives us 🙂

So here are top 10 things suggested by our PM in the book:

1. exams are like festivals - celebrate them.

Just like you wait for festivals like Holi, Diwali, Christmas, Eid all year round, you also wait for your exams, don’t you!? And just like you plan on celebrating the festivals with your family and friends, you are not alone in your exams as well! There are lacs of students across the country giving the same paper with you – going through same things as you do and feeling the same. Your family members are also with you all along! So you should choose to celebrate the ‘festival of exams’ with cheer and happiness!

2. Exams test your current preparation, not you. So CHILL!

Due to increasing competition and pressure today, it is normal to think that exams are the end of the world. But it is not so! An exam cannot define a person. There are many famous and influential people today who failed to clear one exam. In fact one of the most famous nuclear scientist and erstwhile Indian president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam failed a test and couldn’t get entry into Indian defense, but it did not stop him. He grabbed other important opportunities in life. Do similar thing with your exams – prepare whole-heartedly, write them in the best way and then chill. Do not fear failure!

3. Laugh In, Laugh Out

Laugh your way into the exam hall, and out of it. Talk to friends, family, crack jokes. Even if you feel tensed, just laugh. There is a scientifically proved theory that smiling actually reduces stress. You may not recall an answer when you are stressed because knowledge takes a back seat and pressure drives you. So just relax!

4. Be a warrior, not a worrier

It is natural to be concerned during the exams, but worrying all the time is not going to help. You are not going to be awarded marks on the basis of how worried you are! Don’t get tensed, just write the exams bravely! 🙂

5. Knowledge is permanent - pursue it

Remember why the exams are there – so that you learn and gain knowledge. When you pursue knowledge, marks will automatically follow. If you study to gain knowledge, no question will seem tough! Focus on enhancing your knowledge than running behind marks.

6. Compete but with yourself

They key to success lies in excellence. And excellence can be achieved by expanding your own capacity until you reach your true potential. When you compete with others, one of the three things can happen – you will feel overconfident (if you are better), you might get frustrated (if you are worse) or you might not feel the need to improve (if you are equal). Only competing with yourself makes you better.

7. Play to shine (jo khele, vo khile)

Devoting some time to outdoor activities and games will boost your preparation. It helps you take in more oxygen, improving your blood circulation, loosening your muscles, improving mind-body coordination, increasing your stamina and enhances spirit of teamwork in you! Just make sure you don’t over-do it 🙂

8. Observe exam discipline

Organize yourself before the exam. Pack your essentials. Keep your hall ticket and ID card. Arrive early to the exam hall to avoid panic. Don’t be in a hurry to start writing answers – read instructions first. Check exam hall rules on what not carry.

9. To cheat is to be cheap

Cheating is wrong. No discussion. It is the biggest disservice you can do to your parents, teachers, society and above all, yourself. True success is one which is achieved through hard work, not by copying someone else’s work. Let human creativity prevail over cheating.

10. Yoga brings transformation, practise regularly

Yoga brings good health and happiness, and calms our mind. This is exactly what we need during exam season! Some of the balancing asanas even enhance confidence, memory and concentration. On your screen now you can see a list of asanas and pranayamas that are beneficial for the exam time.

  • Suryanamaskar
  • Padahastasana
  • Bhujangasana
  • Dhanurasana
  • Nadi shoda pranayama
  • Sheetali pranayama

For more information on how to perform these asanas, what are their benefits, you can visit the link for National Institute of Yoga. It is given in the description below.

You can search up these asanas on google and learn more about how to do them.

Apart from these, we suggest that you all definitely read the book – it’s well written in simple language and really helps us to calm and think beyond marks. It will act as a friend for all the students!

Stay tuned and happy learning!

Best and worst from real soldier writing tests

essay on exam warriors

Earlier this year, the Army ran a pilot English comprehension and writing assessment with about 500 soldiers at the Basic Leader Course, formerly known as the Warrior Leader Course.

Students were given 50 minutes to write an essay about the potentially positive effects of peer pressure. They were asked to explain their position with reasons and examples from their own experience, observations or reading.

The soldiers were graded at a level equivalent to a freshman in college.

Using an automated grading tool, soldiers' essays were scored on a scale of one through six, with one representing those who have "much work to do" to improve their writing skills, and six representing essays that have "a convincing argument."

Here are some of the actual soldier writing samples, provided to Army Times. Three are among the lowest scores provided to Army Times, and the last is an excerpt from the only perfect score the Army provided.

Score: 1 out of 6

Peer pressure exist everywhere, specially in school. Friends have a lot of power on teenagers decisions, specially if the child doesn't have guidance at home. Having control ov er decisions is important and it all starts at home. At home I talk to my daughter a lot about how negative peer pressure can affect. Shoosing a good circle of friends is a good start. Keeping kids active in sports and other healthy activities is great. I hope you like my essay. Thank You.

Score: 2 out of 6

Peer pressure is a big part of our lives. Whether it's at work or school, peer pressure can affect your life. It can have a negative effect on you but not always. Sometimes it can have a positive effect. It can affect the way you dress, act around friends, alcohol, and smoking. Peer pressure can help you fit in with people, which can be good or bad. Positive peer pressure can help reflect on your actions and help you become a better individual. You can watch others achieve their goals and that will help you work hard on your goals you want to achieve. I was peer pressured into chewing tobacco when I was younger. It was a bad habit to pick up. But a few years back, a relative got cancer from tobacco. They ended up passing away because of it so that pressured me to quit chewing.

Score 2 out of 6

By definition pressure is:" a constraining or compelling force or influence." Pressure can be seen as positive or negative thing depending on person whom it's applied to specially in army institution standard. What is the potentially positive effects of peer pressure? Army is the most demanding institution about rules and requirements which is based on its Doctrines and values. To achieve those goals, peers have to implement pressures which are positives effects for the best of the institution. Peers pressures are good when they are motived soldiers to give their best potentials and improvements regarding their jobs and their fitness readiness for the mission. By observation peer pushed by pressure Soldiers passed their Physical Readiness training test and be more knowledgeable on their military occupational specialty.

Being a parachute rigger comes with tons of peer pressure some bad, some good. Having the will power to over come that pressure is what i believe to be a great noncommissioned officer chartists. Positive effects from peer pressure happens a lot, like having them help over come a challenge, having your battle buddy's there to push and support you thur tough times in life. Peer pressure can completely change your life, either negative or positive. For example when i was hurt and couldn't work out and do anything all my buddy's kept pressuring me about my fitness and if it wasn't for them today i wouldn't be in the army today. Heres another reason i use to have a drinking problem and im thankful for my noncommissioned officer that helped me get help when i was lost in my own world. Peer pressure gets a lot of negative action but if you really take your time to see that most people are out here to assist. Having that positive influence in your life can change your life and that is not always a bad thing. Peer pressure will either make you or break you.

Score: 6 out of 6 (Excerpt from a 769-word response)

In the popular film (and comic book) series, Spiderman, Peter Parker's uncle says, "with great power comes great responsibility," to Peter shortly before he passes away. Peter Parker eventually took this advice and applied it to his newfound abilities; however it still applies to any person with any kind of power. When one possesses even a small amount of power, he/she will have people that look up to him/her. Once one has people who look up to him, they begin to have influence over those individuals, how they use that influence is seen as peer pressure. This power may come from position, experience, knowledge, or any number of things. If can even be just because someone looks like a leader, people will want to follow him/her. Peer pressure is an important topic to study in the military because many times peer pressure leads to hazing. Hazing is a hot topic in the military service and at universities because of the multiple deaths occurring from it. This kind of peer pressure results from the desire to be a part of a group, and when those who belong to the group realize that the individual will do almost anything to become a part of the group, they abuse their power. Those who have great power, but lack great responsibility are those who inevitably get somebody killed through peer pressure.

A Warrior Culture and its Contrast to Societal Norms

This essay about warrior culture explores its influence on societies historically and in contemporary times. Focusing on values such as honor, courage, loyalty, and combat skill, the essay discusses how these principles shaped the moral and ethical frameworks within different civilizations, such as the Samurai of Japan and the Spartans of ancient Greece. It highlights how the Bushido code and Spartan ethos not only prepared individuals for warfare but also influenced broader societal norms, including arts, education, and gender roles. Additionally, the essay examines the portrayal of female warriors in history and media, and the ongoing impact of warrior principles in modern military practices and leadership. The enduring fascination with warrior culture in popular media underscores its lasting significance on global cultural and ethical standards.

How it works

Warrior culture has been a defining element of societies throughout history, shaping the values, traditions, and behaviors of communities across the globe. From the Samurai of Japan to the Spartans of ancient Greece, warrior cultures have not only influenced military strategies and political hierarchies but have also embedded a lasting legacy within the cultural ethos of these civilizations.

The essence of warrior culture often centers around the values of honor, courage, loyalty, and skill in combat. These values are not merely about warfare; they are intertwined with the moral and ethical frameworks of the society.

For example, in feudal Japan, the Bushido code governed the way of the Samurai, focusing not just on martial prowess but also on virtues like righteousness, benevolence, and respect. This code influenced various aspects of Japanese culture, from tea ceremonies to literature, demonstrating how the principles of warrior life permeate broader societal norms.

Similarly, the Spartans, known for their austere and militaristic society, valued discipline, simplicity, and endurance. Spartan education and daily life were rigorously designed to strengthen both body and mind, preparing individuals from a young age for their roles as protectors of the state. The Spartan ethos emphasized the community over the individual, a trait that reinforced their formidable reputation in battle but also shaped their social structure, limiting individual expression and prioritizing collective goals.

Warrior cultures also deeply influence gender roles and expectations. In many warrior societies, the roles of men and women were clearly defined and often rigid, with warrior roles typically reserved for men. However, there are notable exceptions, such as the legendary Amazons, who are often portrayed as a tribe where women were trained in combat and governance, challenging the typical gender norms of their contemporary societies. In more recent history, groups like the Dahomey Amazons in West Africa were known for their fierce all-female warriors who were crucial in combat and served as royal guards.

The impact of warrior culture extends to modern times, influencing contemporary military and societal values. The legacy of these cultures can be seen in modern concepts of leadership, strategy, and honor. Military academies worldwide still teach strategies developed by historical warrior classes, and the values of discipline and bravery continue to be upheld as ideal traits for leadership. Additionally, the fascination with warrior cultures persists in popular media, with films, books, and video games often drawing inspiration from historical warriors to convey themes of heroism and valor.

In conclusion, warrior culture transcends the battlefield. It molds societal values, influences art and literature, and defines roles within the community. The enduring legacy of warrior cultures in modern societies reflects a continued admiration for their values and traditions, highlighting a universal appeal to the ideals of courage and honor. This cultural imprint reminds us of the powerful role these warriors have played not only in their own times but in shaping the moral and ethical foundations of future generations.

A Culture Warrior Takes a Late Swing

The editor and essayist Joseph Epstein looks back on his life and career in two new books.

NEVER SAY YOU’VE HAD A LUCKY LIFE: Especially If You’ve Had a Lucky Life , by Joseph Epstein

FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTENT: New and Selected Essays , by Joseph Epstein

When Tammy Wynette was asked to write a memoir in her mid-30s, she initially declined, she said in an interview, because “I didn’t think my life was over yet.” The publisher responded: Has it occurred to you that in 15 years no one might care? She wrote the book. “Stand by Your Man: An Autobiography” (1979) was a hit.

The essayist and editor Joseph Epstein — whose memoir “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life,” is out now, alongside a greatest-hits collection titled “Familiarity Breeds Content” — has probably never heard Wynette sing except by accident. (In a 1993 essay, he wrote that he wished he didn’t know who Willie Nelson was, because it was a sign of a compromised intellect.) But his memoir illustrates another reason not to wait too long to commit your life to print.

There is no indication that Epstein, who is in his late 80s, has lost a step. His prose is as genial and bland, if comparison to his earlier work is any indication, as it ever was. But there’s a softness to his memories of people, perhaps because it was all so long ago. This is the sort of memoir that insists someone was funny, or erudite, or charismatic, while rarely providing the crucial details.

Epstein aw-shucks his way into “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” — pretending to be self-effacing while not being so in the least is one of his salient qualities as a writer — by warning readers, “I may not have had a sufficiently interesting life to merit an autobiography.” This is because he “did little, saw nothing notably historic, and endured not much out of the ordinary of anguish or trouble or exaltation.” Quickly, however, he concludes that his life is indeed worth relating, in part because “over the years I have acquired the literary skill to recount that life well.”

Here he is wrong in both directions. His story is interesting enough to warrant this memoir. His personal life has taken complicated turns. And as the longtime editor of the quarterly magazine The American Scholar, and a notably literate conservative culture warrior, he’s been in the thick of things.

He does lack the skill to tell his own story, though, if by “skill” we mean not well-scrubbed Strunk and White sentences but close and penetrating observation. Epstein favors tasseled loafers and bow ties, and most of his sentences read as if they were written by a sentient tasseled loafer and edited by a sentient bow tie.

He grew up in Chicago, where his father manufactured costume jewelry. The young Epstein was popular and, in high school, lettered in tennis. His title refers to being lucky, and a big part of that luck, in his estimation, was to grow up back when kids could be kids, before “the therapeutic culture” took over.

This complaint sets the tone of the book. His own story is set next to a rolling series of cultural grievances. He’s against casual dress, the prohibition of the word “Negro,” grade inflation, the Beat Generation, most of what occurred during the 1960s, standards slipping everywhere, de-Westernizing college curriculums, D.E.I. programs, you name it. His politics aren’t the problem. We can argue about those. American culture needs more well-read conservatives. The problem is that in his search for teachable moments, his memoir acquires the cardboard tone of a middling opinion column.

His youth was not all tennis lessons and root beer floats. He and his friends regularly visited brothels because, he writes, sex was not as easy to come by in the 1950s. He was kicked out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for his role in the selling of a stolen accounting exam to other students.

He was lucky to find a place at the University of Chicago, a place of high seriousness. The school changed him. He began to reassess his values. He began to read writers like Irving Howe, Sidney Hook, Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, and felt his politics pull to the right.

After college, he was drafted into the Army and ended up in Little Rock, Ark., where he met his first wife. At the time, she was a waitress at a bar and restaurant called the Gar Hole. Here Epstein’s memoir briefly threatens to acquire genuine weight.

She had lost custody of her two sons after a divorce. Together they got them back, and she and Epstein had two sons of their own. After their divorce, Epstein took all four of the boys. This is grist for an entire memoir, but Epstein passes over it quickly. One never gets much of a sense of what his boys were like, or what it was like to raise them. He later tells us that he has all but lost touch with his stepsons and has not seen them for decades.

He worked for the magazine The New Leader and the Encyclopaedia Britannica before becoming the editor of The American Scholar in 1975. It was a position he would hold for 22 years. He also taught at Northwestern University for nearly three decades.

At The American Scholar he began to write a long personal essay in each issue, under the pseudonym Aristides. He wrote 92 of these, on topics such as smoking and envy and reading and height. Most ran to 6,500 words, or about 4,000 words longer than they should have been.

Many magazine editors like to write every so often, to keep a hand in. But there is something unseemly about an editor chewing up acres of space in his own publication on a regular basis. Editorially, it’s a droit du seigneur imposition.

A selection of these essays, as well as some new ones, can now be found in “Familiarity Breeds Content.” In his introduction to this book, Christopher Buckley overpraises Epstein, leaving the reader no choice but to start mentally pushing back.

Buckley calls Epstein “the most entertaining living essayist in the English language.” (Not while Michael Kinsley, Lorrie Moore, Calvin Trillin, Sloane Crosley and Geoff Dyer, among many others, walk the earth.) He repurposes Martin Amis’s comment about Saul Bellow: “One doesn’t read Saul Bellow. One can only reread him.” To this he adds, “Ditto Epstein.” (Epstein is no Saul Bellow.) Buckley says, “Joe Epstein is incapable of writing a boring sentence.”

Well. How about this one, from an essay about cats?

A cat, I realize, cannot be everyone’s cup of fur.

Or this one, from an essay about sports and other obsessions:

I have been told there are people who wig out on pasta.

Or this one, about … guess:

When I was a boy, it occurs to me now, I always had one or another kind of hat.
Juggling today appears to be undergoing a small renaissance.
If one is looking to save on fuel bills, politics is likely to heat up a room quicker than just about anything else.
In tennis I was most notable for flipping and catching my racket in various snappy routines.

The essays are, by and large, as tweedy and self-satisfied as these lines make them sound. There are no wild hairs in them, no sudden deepenings of tone. Nothing is at stake. We are stranded with him on the putt-putt course.

Epstein fills his essays with quotation after quotation, as ballast. I am a fan of well-deployed, free-range quotations. So many of Epstein’s are musty and reek of Bartlett’s. They are from figures like Lord Chesterfield and Lady Mary Montagu and Sir Herbert Grierson and Tocqueville and Walpole and Carlyle. You can feel the moths escaping from the display case in real time.

To be fair, I circled a few sentences in “Familiarity Breeds Content” happily. I’m with him on his distrust of “fun couples.” He writes, “A cowboy without a hat is suitable only for bartending.” I liked his observation, which he borrowed from someone else, that a career has five stages:

(1) Who is Joseph Epstein? (2) Get me Joseph Epstein. (3) We need someone like Joseph Epstein. (4) What we need is a young Joseph Epstein. (5) Who is Joseph Epstein?

It’s no fun to trip up a writer on what might have been a late-career victory lap. Epstein doesn’t need me to like his work. He’s published more than 30 books, and you can’t do that unless you’ve made a lot of readers happy.
