Essay on Haritha Haram (994 Words)

November 26, 2019 by Study Mentor 2 Comments

The term ‘ Forest ’ has been derived from the Latin word ‘Foris’ meaning outside with reference to village boundary or fence including all uncultivated and uninhabited land. Nowadays, forests mean any land managed for diverse purpose of forestry, whether covered with trees, shrubs, bushes, climbers, grasses, etc.

Table of Contents

What is Haritha Haram?

Telangana Ku Haritha Haram, better known as Haritha Haram is a noble initiative of the Telangana Government to introduce large scale reformation in the field of agriculture and forestry to improve the green cover which has a tremendously positive impact on the ecological balance thus promoting sustenance of the human race.

Telangana presently has a forest cover of 24% and through this program the Government aims at incrementing this figure to 33%.

It was launched with the efforts of the erstwhile Telangana Chief Minister Shri Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao on the 3rd of July, 2015. The principle target of the Haritha Haram is to plant 230 crores of plants in Telangana.

Aims and objectives of the Haritha Haram

  • To plant at least 230 crores of plants throughout the State.
  • Its noble aims are to plant 40000 seedlings in each village and 40 lakh seedlings in each assembly constituency.
  • For the efficacious fulfillment of these astronomical goals, various modern agricultural techniques have been adopted and required advanced machinery has also been sanctioned.
  • The Government wants to leave no stone unturned to realize the green goal and therefore, special committees have been created at each strat of the administrative hierarchy, from State level to Gram Panchayats who will oversee the works done and will make sure that the proposed goals be achieved effectively.
  • The Forest department and the Department of Agriculture has been actively involved for effective assessment of the survival rates of the planted seedlings.

The various planting models that have been adopted for Haritha Haram include

  • Institutional Plantation
  • Agro Forestry Plantation
  • Tank Fore Shore plantation
  • Homestead Plantation
  • Barren Hill Afforestation
  • Avenue Plantation
  • Block Plantation

Benefits of Haritha Haram to the ecosystem

Natural vegetation forms an integral part of the ecosystem and its elimination or endangering would create massive imbalances in the environment leading to a massacre of  natural calamities .

Plants are the source of food to many animals on this earth and are an essential component on life sustenance on this earth.

It is in the beginning of each food chain which makes plants of paramount importance for the survival of species.

Because of its root connection with the soil, plants absorb groundwater and transpire it into the atmosphere thereby not only cooling it but also increasing the moisture content in the atmosphere and subsequently causing rainfall.

Thus, plants are extreme importance for the ushering of precipitation.

Plants perform the process of photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight  to produce food.

Carbon dioxide, exhaled by us humans is one of the major raw materials needed for the effective completion of photosynthesis thus giving oxygen as it’s byproduct.

Trees therefore help to replenish oxygen of the atmosphere which is a prerequisite of aerobic organisms like human beings.

Trees often grow strong boding with the soil through their root system. This root system is so strong, that they can act as natural embankments during times of flood and prevent inundation of the soil, and property.

Plants usually propagate through pollination for which it lures insects by giving it nectar.

If these plants are destroyed, so will be the source of nectar for insects and bees and as a result the ecosystem of bees and insects will also be threatened.

Trees are home to various forms of fauna. It provides natural habitat to many animals like monkeys , owls , bats , snakes etc.

Trees in places with strong and powerful winds help reduce the wind velocity thereby limiting the ferocity of prevailing dust storms.

Problems of Indian Forestry

The need for Haritha Haram arises for the following problems that the Indian forest cover faces:

  • Low forest cover – the forest cover in India is only 21.02% as against the world average of about 35%
  • Open grazing- overgrazing by cattle, sheep and goats in hilly and mountainous areas damage the forest cover.
  • Shifting cultivation
  • Growing demand for agricultural land – with growing population , demand for food products and agricultural raw materials has increased significantly. This has caused considerable shrinking in forest area.
  • Urbanization and Industrialization – increasing urbanization and industrialization is also an important cause for the degradation of natural vegetation within India.
  • Construction of hydroelectric projects like Narmada project has caused displacement and submergence of forest area.
  • Human activities like quarrying, mining, and building, has resulted in large scale deforestation.

Forests constitute a renewable resource contributing to economic development of a country by providing goods and services to the people and industry.

They play an integral role in enhancing the quality of environment by influencing the climate, as well as the life support system.

In India, a forest cover of over 80% about 5000 years ago has become declined only about 19% today.

In an average day, more than 400 square kilometers of tropical forests are destroyed throughout the globe. India is a developing nation which prides it’s industrialization and rapid modernization.

However, we should not forget that no matter how advanced we become, plants can never be manufactured in factories.

It is high time that we realize this epiphany truth or else we will be only digging our own graves in this barren land of minimal endangered forest cover.

The Haritha Haram programme is an excellent and praise-worthy initiative from the Government and hopefully other states and countries will follow suit. The Great Russian writer Anton Chekov rightly wrote,

A tree is beautiful, but what’s more, it has a right to life; like water and the sun and the stars, it is essential. Life on Earth is inconceivable without trees.

Forests create climate, climate influences people’s characters and so on and so forth.

There can neither be civilization nor happiness if forests crash down under the axe, if climate is harsh and severe, if people are also harsh and severe – What a terrible future!

Haritha Haram Essay

Haritha Haram is a campaign started by Sri Chandra Sekhar Rao- the Chief Minister of Telangana on 3rd July in 2015. The prime objective of this campaign was to plant millions of saplings of plants in order to increase the green cover on the earth and to preserve the forests which are depleting day by day at an enormous rate.

Such an initiative will certainly help in decreasing the pollution levels along with saving the environment and the mother nature. Deforestation and exploitation of forest resources are the main reasons behind the present global warming. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the greenery on the earth to maintain the ecological balance in nature.

Forest cover is decreasing because of urbanization and industrialization and the people are using land for various business purposes. This has resulted in ecological imbalance as animals are losing their habitat due to cutting down of trees and the depletion of rainforests has resulted in climatic changes and droughts in many places. Hence, this campaign was launched with a purpose to stop all this chaos happening in the world.

Telangana has witnessed greater peace and calm after the launch of this campaign as now the animals are living in their own habitats and do not come out of the forests to attack people and to create a mess in the society of human beings.

This campaign has also helped in increasing the rainfall in the state and the water scarcity problem has also been decreased up to a greater extent. This has ultimately helped the nation fight the global warming issue.

In conclusion, increasing the green cover on earth plays an important role in saving the environment. So it is our prime responsibility that we should cooperate with the government in these campaigns to make them successful and thus contribute to the betterment of the environment and the world.

When India invited delegates attending the G20 summit in September 2023 to dinner with “ the President of Bharat ,” rather than “the President of India,” it may have looked to the world like a simple case of postcolonial course correction.

The word “India” is, after all, an exonym – a placename given by outsiders. In this case, the name came from the British, who ruled the subcontinent from 1858 to 1947, a violent period of colonialism that later came to be called “the British Raj.”

“Bharat,” on the other hand, is the word for “India” in Hindi, by far the most spoken language in the nation . Alongside English, Hindi is one of two languages used in the Indian Constitution , with versions written in each language.

“Bharat” may, therefore, look like a well-reasoned and uncontroversial replacement for a term anointed long ago by outsiders – something akin to how Eswatini , Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso updated their countries’ names from the colonial designations “Swaziland,” “Rhodesia” and “Upper Volta,” respectively.

But the use of “Bharat” has elicited outcry from the political opposition, some Muslims, and Hindu conservatives in the south, reflecting ongoing tensions in India between language, religion and politics.

Two different language families

My book with fellow linguist Julie Tetel Andresen , “ Languages in the World: How History, Culture, and Politics Shape Language ,” covers the language history and politics of India.

Hindi is the most-spoken language in India, but its use is largely relegated to a part of the country that linguists refer to as “ the Hindi belt ,” a massive region in northern, central and eastern India where Hindi is the official or primary language.

Around 1500 B.C.E., a group of outsiders from Central Asia – known now as the Indo-Aryans – began migrating and settling in what is now northern India. They spoke a language that would eventually become Sanskrit . As groups of these speakers separated from one another and spread out over northern India, their spoken Sanskrit changed over time, becoming distinctive.

Most of the languages spoken in northern India today – Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali and Gujarati, among many others – derive from this history.

Map of India highlighting predominant languages spoken in various regions.

But the Aryans were not the first group to inhabit the Indian subcontinent. Another group, the Dravidians, was already living in the region at the time of the Aryan migrations. They may have been the original inhabitants of the Indus-Valley Civilization in northern India . Over the millennia, the Dravidians migrated to the southern part of the subcontinent, while the Aryans fanned out across the north.

Today, Dravidians number about 250 million people . Dravidian languages , such as Tamil , Telugu and Malayalam , have no historical relationship and virtually no linguistic similarities to the Indo-Aryan languages of the north.

Dravidians spurn Hindi

By the time the Raj ended in 1947, English had been established as the language of the elites and was used in education and government. As the new nation of India took shape, Mahatma Gandhi advocated for a single Indian language to unite the diverse regions and for many years championed Hindi, which was already widely spoken in the north .

But after independence, opposition to Hindi grew in the Dravidian-speaking south, where English was the favored lingua franca. For Tamils and other Dravidian groups, Hindi was associated with the Brahmin caste, whom many felt marginalized Dravidian languages and culture .

For many people in the south, Hindi came to be seen as a language as foreign as English. To keep tensions from spilling over, the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, supported verbiage in the constitution adopted in 1950 allowing for the continued use of English in government for a limited period.

Violence nevertheless continued in the south for years around what was seen as the unfair promotion of Hindi . It abated only when Indira Gandhi – Nehru’s daughter and the third prime minister of India – pushed to codify English , alongside Hindi, as an official language in the constitution.

Today, the Indian Constitution recognizes 22 official languages .

Nationalists push for one official language

The Partition of India in 1947 – corresponding to the dissolution of the Raj – led to the creation of Pakistan, which was set up to aggregate the majority Muslim regions from the colonial state. An independent India was set up to include the majority non-Muslim regions.

Today, roughly 97% of Pakistan’s population is Muslim . In India, Hindus make up about 80% of the population, while Muslims make up about 14% – more than 200 million people.

This is where modern domestic politics come into play.

“ Hindutva ” is a brand of far-right Hindu nationalism that emerged in the 20th century in response to colonial rule but gained its biggest following under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janta Party , or the BJP.

As a political ideology, Hindu nationalism should be distinguished from Hinduism, a religion. It advances policies that seek to promote Hindu supremacy and are widely considered anti-Muslim .

One such policy is the promotion of Hindi as the sole official language of India. Speaking in 2022 at a Parliamentary Official Language Committee meeting, BJP Home Minister Amit Shah said , “When citizens of states speak other languages, communicate with each other, it should be in the language of India.”

To Shah, the “language of India” and Hindi were one and the same.

Suppressing Urdu

Muslims in India speak the languages of their communities – Hindi among them – as do Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians.

However, making Hindi the national language could be viewed as one part of a broader political project that can be characterized as anti-Muslim. That’s why the political opposition is against using “ Bharat ,” even though many Muslims are themselves Hindi speakers.

These politics become even clearer in the context of the BJP’s attempts to limit the use of Urdu – a language with a high degree of mutual intelligibility to Hindi – in Indian public life .

Although Urdu and Hindi are remarkably similar, their differences take on outsized religious and national significance.

Whereas Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, which has strong cultural associations with Hinduism, Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script, which has strong associations with Islam. Whereas Hindi draws on Sanskrit for new words, Urdu draws on Persian and Arabic, again emphasizing associations to Islam. And whereas Hindi predominates in India, Urdu is the official language of Pakistan , along with English.

Thus the appearance of “Bharat” in official government correspondence may reopen old wounds for Muslims – and even for conservative Hindus in the Dravidian-speaking south who might otherwise support Modi and the BJP.

Although an official name change is unlikely in the immediate future, “Bharat” will likely continue to serve as a rallying cry for right-wing nationalists.

To them, the conciliatory language politics of Nehru and Indira Gandhi are a thing of the past .

Short Essay on Subramania Bharati in 400 Words

Subramania Bharati was one of the greatest Tamil writers, poets, and revolutionaries of all times. He was born on 11 December 1882 in the town of Etthyapuram in Tamil Nadu, India. He was fluent in many different languages, like Hindi, English, Telugu, French, and Sanskrit, but his favourite language was Tamil, his mother tongue.

The name ‘Bharati’ or ‘the one blessed by Goddess Saraswati’ was given to him by the Raja of Etthyapuram who was impressed by young Subramania’s poetic genius. He worked as the court poet of the Raja as well as a Tamil teacher for a short period of time. Later, he developed an interest in journalism and joined a Tamil daily as an assistant editor.

He continued his work, writing revolutionary poems, translating Vedic literature, hymns, and sutras to Tamil.

He also met several nationalist leaders during this time like Aurobindo and Lajpat Rai. Bharati was arrested by the British government when he entered India in 1918 but was released within a few months. The imprisonment had taken a toll on him and he was struck with poverty and ill health towards the end of his life. He died 12 September 1921, aged just 38.
