IB students around the globe fear writing the Extended Essay, but it doesn't have to be a source of stress! In this article, I'll get you excited about writing your Extended Essay and provide you with the resources you need to get an A on it.

If you're reading this article, I'm going to assume you're an IB student getting ready to write your Extended Essay. If you're looking at this as a potential future IB student, I recommend reading our introductory IB articles first, including our guide to what the IB program is and our full coverage of the IB curriculum .

IB Extended Essay: Why Should You Trust My Advice?

I myself am a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to receive an A on my IB Extended Essay. Don't believe me? The proof is in the IBO pudding:

body_ibeescore.png

If you're confused by what this report means, EE is short for Extended Essay , and English A1 is the subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In layman's terms, my IB Diploma was graded in May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received an A grade on it.

What Is the Extended Essay in the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Extended Essay, or EE , is a mini-thesis you write under the supervision of an IB advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts toward your IB Diploma (learn more about the major IB Diploma requirements in our guide) . I will explain exactly how the EE affects your Diploma later in this article.

For the Extended Essay, you will choose a research question as a topic, conduct the research independently, then write an essay on your findings . The essay itself is a long one—although there's a cap of 4,000 words, most successful essays get very close to this limit.

Keep in mind that the IB requires this essay to be a "formal piece of academic writing," meaning you'll have to do outside research and cite additional sources.

The IB Extended Essay must include the following:

  • A title page
  • Contents page
  • Introduction
  • Body of the essay
  • References and bibliography

Additionally, your research topic must fall into one of the six approved DP categories , or IB subject groups, which are as follows:

  • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
  • Group 2: Language Acquisition
  • Group 3: Individuals and Societies
  • Group 4: Sciences
  • Group 5: Mathematics
  • Group 6: The Arts

Once you figure out your category and have identified a potential research topic, it's time to pick your advisor, who is normally an IB teacher at your school (though you can also find one online ). This person will help direct your research, and they'll conduct the reflection sessions you'll have to do as part of your Extended Essay.

As of 2018, the IB requires a "reflection process" as part of your EE supervision process. To fulfill this requirement, you have to meet at least three times with your supervisor in what the IB calls "reflection sessions." These meetings are not only mandatory but are also part of the formal assessment of the EE and your research methods.

According to the IB, the purpose of these meetings is to "provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their engagement with the research process." Basically, these meetings give your supervisor the opportunity to offer feedback, push you to think differently, and encourage you to evaluate your research process.

The final reflection session is called the viva voce, and it's a short 10- to 15-minute interview between you and your advisor. This happens at the very end of the EE process, and it's designed to help your advisor write their report, which factors into your EE grade.

Here are the topics covered in your viva voce :

  • A check on plagiarism and malpractice
  • Your reflection on your project's successes and difficulties
  • Your reflection on what you've learned during the EE process

Your completed Extended Essay, along with your supervisor's report, will then be sent to the IB to be graded. We'll cover the assessment criteria in just a moment.

We'll help you learn how to have those "lightbulb" moments...even on test day!

What Should You Write About in Your IB Extended Essay?

You can technically write about anything, so long as it falls within one of the approved categories listed above.

It's best to choose a topic that matches one of the IB courses , (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.), which shouldn't be difficult because there are so many class subjects.

Here is a range of sample topics with the attached extended essay:

  • Biology: The Effect of Age and Gender on the Photoreceptor Cells in the Human Retina
  • Chemistry: How Does Reflux Time Affect the Yield and Purity of Ethyl Aminobenzoate (Benzocaine), and How Effective is Recrystallisation as a Purification Technique for This Compound?
  • English: An Exploration of Jane Austen's Use of the Outdoors in Emma
  • Geography: The Effect of Location on the Educational Attainment of Indigenous Secondary Students in Queensland, Australia
  • Math: Alhazen's Billiard Problem
  • Visual Arts: Can Luc Tuymans Be Classified as a Political Painter?

You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic . So how do you pick when the options are limitless?

How to Write a Stellar IB Extended Essay: 6 Essential Tips

Below are six key tips to keep in mind as you work on your Extended Essay for the IB DP. Follow these and you're sure to get an A!

#1: Write About Something You Enjoy

You can't expect to write a compelling essay if you're not a fan of the topic on which you're writing. For example, I just love British theatre and ended up writing my Extended Essay on a revolution in post-WWII British theatre. (Yes, I'm definitely a #TheatreNerd.)

I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the Extended Essay seriously. I was fortunate enough to receive a full-tuition merit scholarship to USC's School of Dramatic Arts program. In my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay; thus, I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship.

But how do you find a topic you're passionate about? Start by thinking about which classes you enjoy the most and why . Do you like math classes because you like to solve problems? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze literary texts?

Keep in mind that there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your Extended Essay topic. You're not more likely to get high marks because you're writing about science, just like you're not doomed to failure because you've chosen to tackle the social sciences. The quality of what you produce—not the field you choose to research within—will determine your grade.

Once you've figured out your category, you should brainstorm more specific topics by putting pen to paper . What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending a few hours on this type of brainstorming.

One last note: if you're truly stumped on what to research, pick a topic that will help you in your future major or career . That way you can use your Extended Essay as a talking point in your college essays (and it will prepare you for your studies to come too!).

#2: Select a Topic That Is Neither Too Broad nor Too Narrow

There's a fine line between broad and narrow. You need to write about something specific, but not so specific that you can't write 4,000 words on it.

You can't write about WWII because that would be a book's worth of material. You also don't want to write about what type of soup prisoners of war received behind enemy lines, because you probably won’t be able to come up with 4,000 words of material about it. However, you could possibly write about how the conditions in German POW camps—and the rations provided—were directly affected by the Nazis' successes and failures on the front, including the use of captured factories and prison labor in Eastern Europe to increase production. WWII military history might be a little overdone, but you get my point.

If you're really stuck trying to pinpoint a not-too-broad-or-too-narrow topic, I suggest trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. Once you begin looking through the list of sample essays below, you'll notice that many use comparisons to formulate their main arguments.

I also used a comparison in my EE, contrasting Harold Pinter's Party Time with John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in order to show a transition in British theatre. Topics with comparisons of two to three plays, books, and so on tend to be the sweet spot. You can analyze each item and then compare them with one another after doing some in-depth analysis of each individually. The ways these items compare and contrast will end up forming the thesis of your essay!

When choosing a comparative topic, the key is that the comparison should be significant. I compared two plays to illustrate the transition in British theatre, but you could compare the ways different regional dialects affect people's job prospects or how different temperatures may or may not affect the mating patterns of lightning bugs. The point here is that comparisons not only help you limit your topic, but they also help you build your argument.

Comparisons are not the only way to get a grade-A EE, though. If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison-based topic and are still unsure whether your topic is too broad or narrow, spend about 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is out there.

If there are more than 1,000 books, articles, or documentaries out there on that exact topic, it may be too broad. But if there are only two books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. If you're still unsure, ask your advisor—it's what they're there for! Speaking of advisors...

body-narrow-crack-stuck-cc0-pixabay

Don't get stuck with a narrow topic!

#3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Familiar With Your Topic

If you're not certain of who you would like to be your advisor, create a list of your top three choices. Next, write down the pros and cons of each possibility (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!).

For example, Mr. Green is my favorite teacher and we get along really well, but he teaches English. For my EE, I want to conduct an experiment that compares the efficiency of American electric cars with foreign electric cars.

I had Ms. White a year ago. She teaches physics and enjoyed having me in her class. Unlike Mr. Green, Ms. White could help me design my experiment.

Based on my topic and what I need from my advisor, Ms. White would be a better fit for me than would Mr. Green (even though I like him a lot).

The moral of my story is this: do not just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor . They might be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. For example, I would not recommend asking your biology teacher to guide you in writing an English literature-based EE.

There can, of course, be exceptions to this rule. If you have a teacher who's passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my theatre topic), you could ask that instructor. Consider all your options before you do this. There was no theatre teacher at my high school, so I couldn't find a theatre-specific advisor, but I chose the next best thing.

Before you approach a teacher to serve as your advisor, check with your high school to see what requirements they have for this process. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an Agreement Form , for instance.

Make sure that you ask your IB coordinator whether there is any required paperwork to fill out. If your school needs a specific form signed, bring it with you when you ask your teacher to be your EE advisor.

#4: Pick an Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best

Some teachers might just take on students because they have to and aren't very passionate about reading drafts, only giving you minimal feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the time to read several drafts of your essay and give you extensive notes. I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make my Extended Essay draft better.

Ask a teacher that you have experience with through class or an extracurricular activity. Do not ask a teacher that you have absolutely no connection to. If a teacher already knows you, that means they already know your strengths and weaknesses, so they know what to look for, where you need to improve, and how to encourage your best work.

Also, don't forget that your supervisor's assessment is part of your overall EE score . If you're meeting with someone who pushes you to do better—and you actually take their advice—they'll have more impressive things to say about you than a supervisor who doesn't know you well and isn't heavily involved in your research process.

Be aware that the IB only allows advisors to make suggestions and give constructive criticism. Your teacher cannot actually help you write your EE. The IB recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in total with the candidate discussing the EE.

#5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow

The IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be one to two double-spaced pages), research question/focus (i.e., what you're investigating), a body, and a conclusion (about one double-spaced page). An essay with unclear organization will be graded poorly.

The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about eight to 18 pages long (again, depending on your topic). Your body can be split into multiple parts. For example, if you were doing a comparison, you might have one third of your body as Novel A Analysis, another third as Novel B Analysis, and the final third as your comparison of Novels A and B.

If you're conducting an experiment or analyzing data, such as in this EE , your EE body should have a clear structure that aligns with the scientific method ; you should state the research question, discuss your method, present the data, analyze the data, explain any uncertainties, and draw a conclusion and/or evaluate the success of the experiment.

#6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later!

You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in just a week and get an A on it. You'll be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books and plays as well!). As such, it's imperative that you start your research as soon as possible.

Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your senior year; others will take them as late as February. Your school will tell you what your deadline is. If they haven't mentioned it by February of your junior year, ask your IB coordinator about it.

Some high schools will provide you with a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to meet with your advisor, and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do this. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure whether you are on a specific timeline.

Below is my recommended EE timeline. While it's earlier than most schools, it'll save you a ton of heartache (trust me, I remember how hard this process was!):

  • January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least your top three options).
  • February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor. If they decline, keep asking others until you find one. See my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor.
  • April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least seven to 10) to your EE advisor. Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline.
  • Summer Between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between your junior and senior year. I know, I know—no one wants to work during the summer, but trust me—this will save you so much stress come fall when you are busy with college applications and other internal assessments for your IB classes. You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely won't be able to get everything you want to say into 4,000 articulate words on the first attempt. Try to get this first draft into the best possible shape so you don't have to work on too many revisions during the school year on top of your homework, college applications, and extracurriculars.
  • August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of your EE to your advisor and receive feedback. Work on incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft.
  • September/October of Senior Year: Submit the second draft of your EE to your advisor (if necessary) and look at their feedback. Work on creating the best possible final draft.
  • November-February of Senior Year: Schedule your viva voce. Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to the IB. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate.

Remember that in the middle of these milestones, you'll need to schedule two other reflection sessions with your advisor . (Your teachers will actually take notes on these sessions on a form like this one , which then gets submitted to the IB.)

I recommend doing them when you get feedback on your drafts, but these meetings will ultimately be up to your supervisor. Just don't forget to do them!

How Is the IB Extended Essay Graded?

Extended Essays are graded by examiners appointed by the IB on a scale of 0 to 34 . You'll be graded on five criteria, each with its own set of points. You can learn more about how EE scoring works by reading the IB guide to extended essays .

  • Criterion A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion C: Critical Thinking (12 points maximum)
  • Criterion D: Presentation (4 points maximum)
  • Criterion E: Engagement (6 points maximum)

How well you do on each of these criteria will determine the final letter grade you get for your EE. You must earn at least a D to be eligible to receive your IB Diploma.

Although each criterion has a point value, the IB explicitly states that graders are not converting point totals into grades; instead, they're using qualitative grade descriptors to determine the final grade of your Extended Essay . Grade descriptors are on pages 102-103 of this document .

Here's a rough estimate of how these different point values translate to letter grades based on previous scoring methods for the EE. This is just an estimate —you should read and understand the grade descriptors so you know exactly what the scorers are looking for.

Here is the breakdown of EE scores (from the May 2021 bulletin):

How Does the Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma?

The Extended Essay grade is combined with your TOK (Theory of Knowledge) grade to determine how many points you get toward your IB Diploma.

To learn about Theory of Knowledge or how many points you need to receive an IB Diploma, read our complete guide to the IB program and our guide to the IB Diploma requirements .

This diagram shows how the two scores are combined to determine how many points you receive for your IB diploma (3 being the most, 0 being the least). In order to get your IB Diploma, you have to earn 24 points across both categories (the TOK and EE). The highest score anyone can earn is 45 points.

body-theory-of-knowledge

Let's say you get an A on your EE and a B on TOK. You will get 3 points toward your Diploma. As of 2014, a student who scores an E on either the extended essay or TOK essay will not be eligible to receive an IB Diploma .

Prior to the class of 2010, a Diploma candidate could receive a failing grade in either the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge and still be awarded a Diploma, but this is no longer true.

Figuring out how you're assessed can be a little tricky. Luckily, the IB breaks everything down here in this document . (The assessment information begins on page 219.)

IB English HLE Explained

Free introductory guide to IB English Higher Level Essay (HLE) by IB44 and IB45 graduates Lareina Shen and Saesha Grover.

In this guide, LitLearn students (and 2022 IB grads!)  Lareina Shen and Saesha Grover share their wisdom on how to conquer the IB English Higher Level Essay (HLE).

Lareina achieved an IB44, and Saesha achieved an IB45 as well as the coveted IB7 in IB English Literature HL, so you are in safe hands.

Meet your instructor Jackson Huang, Founder of LitLearn. His mission is to make IB English as pain-free as possible with fun, practical lessons. Jackson scored an IB45 and was accepted to Harvard, Amherst, Williams Colleges, and full scholarships to University of Melbourne & Queensland.

Photo of LitLearn instructor Jackson Huang

What is IB English HLE?

The HL Essay (HLE) is a 1200-1500 word essay about a text studied in the IB English course. For Lang Lit, the work you choose to analyze can be literary or non-literary, but for IB English Literature the text must be literary.

The HLE will make up  25% of your final IB English HL grade , and it is graded externally. You must choose your own line of inquiry   (i.e. a question that you will answer in your HLE–more on this later).

How do I choose my text for HLE?

Do NOT choose the “easiest” text. Life is always better when you do things you're interested in, and that advice applies to the HLE, too. Choose the literary / non-literary work that interests  you the most, so that you can (semi?)-enjoy the HLE planning and writing process.

You could start by thinking of a theme that you find particularly interesting and determining which text studied in class demonstrates this theme well.

How do I choose my line of inquiry for HLE?

The line of inquiry is the core question that you will answer in your essay. A quick example might be:

"To what extent is masculinity undermined by the characterisation of Little Thomas?"

Now, it's your job to forge your destiny and come up with your own line of inquiry. But it's not a complete free-for all! There are rules. The main rule is that your line of inquiry must fall under one of the 7 main concepts of IB English (see below for a quick summary).

This summary is vague, so let's go in-depth on a couple of these concepts to really show you what you should be doing in the HLE.

Identity is what makes you, YOU. Here are some questions the concern your own personal identity:

  • What is your favourite colour? And why is it your favourite?
  • What makes you different from others? Why do you think these qualities came to be?
  • How would someone describe you in three words?

Now apply this same logic to characters within your text.

  • How would you describe this character in three words?
  • How do their actions within a text influence your view of their identity?
  • How has the author crafted this character to make you view the character in a certain way?

Let's take a look at a concrete example of how we might choose evidence and quotes for a HLE on cultural identity. This example is based on a Vietnamese work in translation “Ru” by author Kim Thúy. For context, “Ru” is an autobiographical fictional account which explores Kim Thúy's move from Vietnam to Canada as an immigrant and her consequent struggles. The structure of her novel is largely lyrical and poetic.

Let's look at a section from her novel that may help us come up with an essay idea based on the concept of Identity. When she returns to Vietnam, she attends a restaurant, however this becomes a major awakening for her in terms of how she views her own personal identity. Kim narrates within her novel:

The first time I carried a briefcase, the first time I went to a restaurant school for young adults in Hanoi, wearing heels and a straight skirt, the waiter for my table didn't understand why I was speaking Vietnamese with him. Page 77, Rú

This is a perfect quote for the Identity concept. Can you see why? Let's think through it together…

Why would the waiter be confused if Kim, a “briefcase”-carrying individual in “heels” and a “straight skirt”, was speaking Vietnamese with him?

What does being “Vietnamese” look like to the waiter? Why does Kim not conform to his expectation? Was it perhaps due to what she was wearing?

Now, if we look at the section which follows this in the novel, we are able to see the impact this had on the character of Kim's sense of identity.

the young waiter reminded me that I couldn't have everything, that I no longer had the right to declare I was Vietnamese because I no longer had their fragility, their uncertainty, their fears. And he was right to remind me. Page 77, Rú

Here, we can clearly see that this character is now questioning her Vietnamese cultural identity. This is just one example that demonstrates the concept of Identity.

Culture seems to be this confusing thing.  Does it have to do with religion? Race? Beliefs? What does it mean? Does the monster from Frankenstein fit into a certain culture?

The easiest way to put it is this:  Culture is the way someone lives. It is their “way of life.” Think of it as an umbrella term. “Culture” can include so many different things; the list just goes on, for example religion, values, customs, beliefs, cuisine, etc.

Now think, how would I form an essay from this concept?

  • When you read a text in class, you will notice that authors let you form an opinion on the culture of certain characters or groups within a text, but how is this done?
  • How does the author represent the culture of a certain community?
  • What types of patterns in daily routines are discussed?

It seems odd writing an essay about “creativity” because… like… how can anyone definitively say what ‘counts' as being creative–or not? When I say the word creativity , I think of new inventions, or maybe those weird and wacky art installations living inside those ‘modern art' museums. But hey, what's creative to me might not be creative to you!

ib essay writer

When formulating a HLE on the concept of creativity we have two main pointers for you. Look for:

  • Interesting + Unique techniques or literary devices used within a text by the author. You can learn more in the  Learn Analysis section of LitLearn.
  • Recurring stylistic choices by the author

Now, for this concept, let's look at how we might select supportive evidence and quotations for a HLE on creativity within the narrative style of author Mary Shelley in “Frankenstein”. The narrative style uses  epistolary narration . This is a narrative technique in which a story is told through letters. This was something that I found both interesting and recurring within Frankenstein, which I believe worked to create a personal touch within the novel.

Additionally, Mary Shelley allows different characters to narrate Frankenstein during different volumes. Let's investigate this! I have written out different character profiles of the narrators below:

ib essay writer

These 3 characters, each relate a part of the novel Frankenstein. This is an example of a creative authorial choice that allows us, as readers to explore different points of view within the text. This is just one example of a creative aspect of a text which you can analyze for your HLE.

Representation

Representation is all about how something is  portrayed, conveyed, shown, described, illustrated, depicted . There are many different things that can be ‘represented' within a text, and it doesn't have to be tangible.

For instance, you can look at how a belief, idea or attitude is depicted within a text through different characters or devices.

Again, let's explore a concrete example to make things clear: this time the graphic novel “Persepolis”. We'll consider an HLE on how a text  represents the  impact of political turmoil on society .

Chapter 10 of “Persepolis” highlights societal changes occurring due to the Iranian Revolution. The panels below list the authorial choices relevant to the negative representation of political change in a society. When looking at the techniques highlighted in the slides below, think about how you feel when you look at the panels below. Can you sense a more positive or negative feeling?

ib essay writer

Cool, but what do we do to turn all this into an actual HL essay? Here is a sample response. The introduction might begin like this:

In the captivating graphic novel “Persepolis,” the author Marjane Satrapi explores the social and political impacts of the Iranian revolution. In particular, Satrapi conveys a disapproving viewpoint on political turmoil within the text. Throughout the graphic novel, Satrapi carefully represents how social isolation, hypocrisy and confusion is experienced by a young girl living in Tehran, as a result of political turmoil.  Example HLE Introduction

Then, in a body paragraph, on one of the key ideas mentioned above, we could analyze the different literary techniques. For example, Panel 1 is a great representation of the experience of confusion in the midst of political turmoil:

Marji is the younger girl pictured in the panels above. While her parents appear quite concerned by the news on the TV, she appears to not be in full comprehension of the cause for their distress. This is demonstrated by the visual imagery and dialogue, in panel 7, for instance, if you observe the facial expressions by each of the characters. Example of analysis in body paragraph

This is just a short example from one particular text. To help you unpack any text, try look for the following when analyzing chapter to chapter:

  • What is the main idea of the chapter?
  • Why did the author write it? What purpose does it serve?
  • What do you believe is the overarching importance of the passage?

Brainstorming Tips

If you're having trouble picking your text and line of inquiry, then use this simple 20-minute process to brainstorm potential questions for your HLE:

  • For each text / non-literary work, go through each concept in the table below.
  • Write down a question for each of the two prompts for each category.
  • Repeat for all of your texts.
  • Pick the question-text combination that has the greatest potential for strong analysis.

How do I ensure my HLE question has a good scope?

Choosing a question with good scope is extremely   important, and it's one of the biggest challenges in the HLE. Here's why:

  • If your scope is too broad , you may have too much to write about in order to answer the question, and therefore you won't be able to write deep analysis (which is super important–more on this later…)
  • If your scope is too narrow , you may not have enough to write about and end up overanalyzing unnecessary and obscure details. Also something to avoid!

So, to help you get the balance just right , here are three examples of HLE questions, specifically for the concept of  Identity which we mentioned in the table above (by the way, the example is a made-up novel for illustration purposes).

  • Too broad: “How does Irene Majov in her novel  Deadly Men effectively make her narrator a powerful mouthpiece?”
  • Too narrow: “How does Irene Majov in her novel  Deadly Men effectively make her narrator a powerful mouthpiece for the concerns of Asian-Americans toward discrimination in the workforce in the 21st century?”
  • Just right: “How does Irene Majov in her novel  Deadly Men effectively make her narrator a powerful mouthpiece for the concerns of Asian-Americans in the 21st century?”

How to get a 7 on IB English HLE

There are many things that contribute to a 7 in your HLE and your IB English grade overall. But if we had to boil it down to one secret, one essential fact… then it'd have to be this: Get really good at analysis .

Analysis is the key to a 7 in IB English. It doesn't matter if it's Paper 1, Paper 2, HLE, IO… You must learn how to analyze quotes at a deep level, and structure your analysis in a way that flows and delights your teachers and examiners.

Start with the basics

Finding Quotes

Also, you'll need to find good quotes for your text. Some good sources where you can find relevant quotes include  Goodreads , SparkNotes ,  LitCharts , and Cliffnotes . Of course, you could just find quotes yourself directly–this will ensure your quotes are unique.

Understanding the IB English HLE rubric

An essential step to getting a high mark on the HL Essay is understanding the rubric! It is SO important that you know what IB English examiners are looking for when grading your essay, as this helps you to shape the content of your essay to match (or even exceed) their expectations.

The IB English HL Essay is graded out of 20 marks . There are 4 criteria, each worth 5 marks.

Use the checklist below to make sure you're not making simple mistakes! Note that this is not the official marking criteria, and I strongly recommend that you reading the official rubric provided by your teacher.

Criterion A: Knowledge, understanding, and interpretation

  • Accurate summary of text in introduction
  • Focused and informative thesis statement
  • Effective and relevant quotes
  • Relevant and effective summary and ending statement in conclusion

Criterion B: Analysis and evaluation

  • Relevant analysis of a variety of stylistic features
  • Relevant analysis of tone and/or atmosphere
  • Relevant analysis of broader authorial choices i.e. characterization, point of view, syntax, irony, etc.

Criterion C: Focus, organization, and development

  • Introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion
  • Organized body paragraphs – topic sentence, evidence, concluding statement/link to question
  • Appropriate progression of ideas and arguments in which evidence (i.e. quotes) are effectively implemented

Criterion D: Language

  • Use expansions (e.g. “do not”) instead of contractions (e.g. “don't”)
  • Use of a variety of connecting phrases e.g. “furthermore”, “nonetheless”, “however”, etc.
  • Complete sentence structures and subject-verb agreement
  • Correct usage of punctuation
  • Appropriate register – no slang
  • Historic present tense : the use of present tense when recounting past events. For example, we want to write “In  The Hunger Games , Peeta and Katniss work   together to win as a district” instead of using the word “worked”.
  • Avoid flowery/dictionary language just to sound smart; it is distracting and difficult to read. As long as you concisely communicate your message using appropriate language, you will score a high mark under this criterion.

Here's everything we discussed:

  • IB English HLE is tough work! Start early.
  • Brainstorm using the table of concepts to come up with a strong HLE question. Don't give up on this!
  • Analysis is the key to a 7 in IB English HLE (and in fact all IB English assessment). Check out LitLearn's course  Learn Analysis for IB English   for immediate help on the exact steps to improve in IB English analysis.

Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor 💪

IB Extended Essay Solved: Everything You Need to Know about Topic Selection, Research and Writing

4000 words.

At first, this may sound impossible. But I promise, once you start writing, you’ll quickly realise that you are going to truly struggle to keep everything within the word count.

On my first draft, I hit 7000 words before I had even reached my second chapter. I paused, questioned whether life was still worth living, and then began to rethink the scope of my essay. Across the entire process, I wrote 10,000-15,000 words just to get to my final draft of 4,000 words.

So today, we’re going to cover everything you need to know from selecting a topic, structuring the essay and perfecting your final draft.

Topic Selection

There are three important considerations to balance when selecting your research topic:

1.  Personal Interest

You will spend hours working on your extended essay – these will be far more enjoyable if you are researching an area of interest. Start by picking a subject area to write in – some common disciplines include English, Business, Sport Science, Psychology and World Studies. It is best to choose a subject that you are both interested in and skilled at.

From there, try and think of ways to combine your personal interests with the topics you have learned in class.

Are you a gym rat? Write a Sport Science EE on optimising muscular hypertrophy and find out how to maximise your gains.

Do you love rap music? Write an English EE on the influence of your favourite artist on their genre and get the opportunity to take a deep dive into their music.

Are you a shopaholic? Write a Business EE on your favourite store and figure out how they keep you hooked!

2.  Viability

After you have a list of potential topics based on your interest, it’s time to get real. Some questions to ask yourself are:

·    Is there enough peer-reviewed research on your topic?

·    Can you understand the research well enough to write about it in your own words?

·    Will you be able to incorporate content from your chosen discipline?

·    Is this essay likely to allow you to demonstrate enough knowledge to score top marks?

This should help narrow down your list to a final topic.

The last step is to narrow the scope of your topic. You won’t truly know until you start writing but try to start with a manageable scope so you can focus on your topic in sufficient detail. Below are some examples of topics which may be too broad and how they can be narrowed:

Research and Writing Process

So you’ve got your topic…what now?

The first step is to plan out a structure. While this will differ between essays, they will all have an Introduction, Body (often with multiple chapters/sections) and a Conclusion.

The internal structure should all be built around answering your RQ. This will require you to find reliable, peer-reviewed research, and figure out how it contributes to your argument.

Your role is similar to that of a lawyer; you have to find all the evidence, piece it all together and present it in a way that is easily digestible and supports your argument.

Some of the best steps to approach this process are:

1.  Find out everything you can and save your sources: Skim websites, articles, videos and just about anything you can get your hands on to learn about the issues surrounding your topic.

2.  Use the Chaining Strategy: If you find a great source on your topic, take a look at the other articles which they have referenced – Chances are that they will also have information that is useful to your essay.

3.  Start Writing: Procrasti-research is a real issue – So many times, students will tell me that they have found 30 or 40 sources on their essay but don’t yet have a word on the page. Take the leap and start writing your essay; it may not be perfect on the first go, but by establishing the foundations of your arguments, even with simple or poor language, you will be able to build the framework for your essay which can be polished later.

4.  Refine Your Essay: On your first read through, you may find that you are changing almost every sentence (that’s perfectly normal!) but keep rereading and refining it. Each time you read through the essay, you should have two goals – to improve the way you are expressing your ideas and to express them in a more concise manner so you can fit more into the essay. You may even ask a friend, parent or your tutor to read over it with you to get some feedback, looking also at the marking criteria.

And that’s it! From here, you should be well-equipped to get going on your Extended Essay. However, if you are looking for some more personal assistance with your IB Extended Essay, reach out to us and we can work with you to ensure you select the right topic, with the right research and the best structure to help you succeed!

What Is An Extended Essay & How to Write It?

Read this article for 5 tips to ace your IB Extended Essay. this article shows IB students how to write an Extended Essay for IB Diploma.

What Is An Extended Essay & How to Write It?

Table of content

What is ib extended essay, choosing your mentor, how to select your topic, the structure of ib extended essay, research question, table of contents, introduction , methodology, the main body, the conclusion, bibliography, ib extended essay checklist.

This article will reveal helpful information on what your IB Extended Essay (EE) requires. Consider this your IB Extended Essay Checklist, which covers everything you must know about your EE.

Hey! Make sure you listen to Ivy, who will explain what NOT to do on your EE.

These mountains you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb!

Understand that no warrior ever conquered the battlefield with an unhinged mind. We say this because, being past IB students, we have seen and faced what we are about to and have a good knowledge and acquired the ability to differentiate between more enormous beasts and smaller beasts.

IB Extended Essay  is a smaller beast considering that you give it enough time before it becomes more prominent. All you need to do is relax your mind, de-stress and follow a simple procedure explained further in the article. There is no need to panic. Trust us, listen to us, and be like us!

Moving ahead from punny insertions, let us tell you why the IB extended essay can be an easy and exciting mountain to climb:

  • Subject of your choice (Good practice to choose from your HLs)
  • Independence of choosing a topic
  • Choice of choosing your mentor
  • Continuous feedback and support from your chosen mentor.

IB extended essay (IB EE) is another one of the mandatory requirements of the IB Diploma Programme. It is a mini-thesis that you write under the supervision of a mentor/advisor. Your mentor will be an IB teacher from your school. The students must conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, which must be at most the limit of 4000 words. You begin by choosing a research question as a topic that will be further approved by IBO. It is up to you to either do a typical research paper, conduct an experiment/solve a problem-type EE.

I can write too many paragraphs giving you unnecessary information but let’s cut to the chase and admit the heart wants what it wants. You will go with an advisor/mentor with whom you will connect the most. However, suppose your judgment is clouded between the advisor you want to choose solely because you click with them better and the mentor who is knowledgeable about your chosen topic and can help you improve your research work. In that case, the choice is pretty straightforward: listen to your brain. Get rid of your toxic love and make a wise decision to choose a knowledgeable mentor. If you are lucky, the mentor you connect with and the one with ample knowledge about your chosen topic will be the same person. On that note, consider only two things while choosing your advisor:

  • An advisor who is familiar with your topic
  • An advisor who will push you to be your best

Before diving into the topic selection and the structure of your IB extended essay, refer to this table to get an insight into the grade breakdown table. This will be helpful in your planning phase.

Moving ahead towards essential aspects of this article. After choosing your mentor, the next step for ‘how to write an EE’ is choosing a topic with the help of your mentor’s input. It is as essential as our  TOK Essay  and  TOK presentation .

Keep the following in mind while selecting your topic:

  • Choose a topic that interests you.
  • A topic that has enough resources and material.
  • Choose a topic that is neither too narrow (so you have enough material) nor too broad (to avoid exceeding the word limit of 4000 words)

Before we dive into the structure, let us make one thing clear, there is a difference between the title and the research question. A title is different from your research question. Your research question is a clear and focused summative statement of your research. For instance, “The Effect of Gender and Age on the photoreceptor cells in the human retina” is a title whereas the following as the examples of research questions:

“Does the efficiency of Rods and cones decrease with age?

“What is the efficiency of L-cone vs M-cone vs S-cone?“

“To what extent are rod cells more efficient than the three cone cells?”

“Does the efficieny of rods and cones differ between genders?”

This will include the following:

  • Introduction

Quick Note: The content on this page will not be included in your essay word count.

NO ABSTRACT REQUIRED. The latest IB guide states that an abstract should not be included in EE anymore.

Introduce and elaborate topic that you are researching in your EE.

  • A crisp description of what you will explore and how you will do so. If you are aiming at a particular firm/industry, discuss the problems and your investigation method.
  • To provide context to your question, you must address the situation from where the question is coming.
  • State your research question and emphasize the importance of answering that question.
  • Please describe how your research is helpful and exciting and how it is valuable to your audience.

You should split this section into two major areas to cover all the essential aspects.

  • Section - 1 Explaining your sources
  • Section - 2 Related topics, theories, and arguments that you will use to explore

Quick Note: Ensure that besides giving the readers an insight into the theories, arguments, and resources you plan to use for your research, you also point out the weaknesses and limitations.

Section- 1: Sources

  • Describe each of your major sources of primary and secondary research.
  • Inform the readers how these sources are helpful.
  • To provide the readers with insight into each source's weaknesses or limitations. For example, there may have been room for bias or a limited scope of your research. Or there are other reasons why other data you used could be unreliable or invalid.
  • Some useful sources of secondary research are company annual reports, news articles, magazine articles, business textbooks, and encyclopedias.
  • Mention any adjustments (at least one) you made to your research as you progressed with your EE.

Section- 2: Related topics, theories, and arguments

  • Briefly explain the ideas you will use and why (what are you aiming to support by using these).
  • Address weaknesses or limitations of each addressed topic, theory, or related argument.
  • Mention any changes made to these as you progressed with your EE.

This part of your essay will be the most elaborate. It will concentrate on research, analysis, discussion, and evaluation.

To maintain the flow of your previous section, we suggest splitting this section into two parts, identical to the previous bifurcation, to showcase your understanding of the IB concepts learned in your business management class and the other addressing the insightful material outside of your course.

Section-1: Related arguments, theories, and topics form your course learning

  • Include 4 or 5 of these to help you answer your research question.
  • It is suggested that you include at least one financial element. Address your qualitative tools before the quantitative ones.

Section- 2: Beyond your Course

Take up this section as an opportunity for you to educate your reader/evaluator.

  • Review several related theories and concepts more extensively than the course does.
  • Impress your reader by giving the sense that you know how the particular industry works. Showcase your expertise or knowledge gained through expert opinions in several aspects of your question.
  • Please add some analytical insight in this section rather than just descriptive. Be careful to ensure that all of your theories in this section are really helping you answer your research question.
  • You can use a graph here, but it must link to the research question.
  • Use theories and supportive arguments that apply to your research and are beyond your course (if relevant).

Quick Note: Relate every paragraph to your research question.

This section is self-explanatory. It is time to bind all your areas together.

  • It would help if you concentrated on making your EE sections cohesive.
  • Please address what you have researched and how it helps answer your research question.
  • Keep everything new in your conclusion.
  • Shine through by including mini-conclusions to synthesize your essay.
  • You can include several evaluative insights as well, if applicable.
  • Mention some weaknesses and limitations of your research and their effect on your research. You can even address the inaccuracies these limitations may have caused and state the reason behind them.
  • Explain at least one thing that you would have done differently if you were to do it again.

Quick Note: Don’t include a recommendations section in your EE

This section gives the reader an insight into your research resources. It may include:

  • Books –textbooks, internet resources, journals, academic papers, competitor interviews, etc.
  • Primary Resource (if applicable) –Interview, data (focus group, survey, etc.).

Quick note: The content on this page will not be included in your essay word count.

Take this section as more of an essential formality of showcasing the process of hard work that you have put in.

  • Transcripts from your interviews,
  • The additional analysis you didn't fit in the body of your EE.
  • Any other exciting data which you would like to refer to in the body of your work.

With this, we come to the end of our article on what is an IB extended essay and how to write an extended essay. As we mentioned earlier, it is relatively easy. All you need is dedication, set timelines, and proper research. So, don't worry; no rabbits can pull out your hat today. If you want to score a 36 on 36 your Extended Essay, check out our  Extended Essay Guide , which offers '5 never heard before' tips to help you write a quality essay.

Make an IB Extended Essay Checklist! I cannot emphasize enough on this point. The submission for your EE happens simultaneously when you are expected to take your exams. There will be a million things that you would have to keep track of. There is a high chance of forgetting to make that final edit or perfecting your EE's introduction in the midst of it all. Therefore, an IB Extended Essay Checklist will ensure you do everything. IB Extended Essay Checklist will be your savior during the final submission days.

We Are Familiar with TOK Structure and Format

The essay is structured around a prescribed title chosen from a list provided by the IB. Here’s a brief overview of the TOK essay structure and format:

Introduction:

  • Begin with a clear statement of the prescribed title and your interpretation of it.
  • Briefly outline the areas of knowledge (AOKs) and ways of knowing (WOKs) you will discuss.
  • State your thesis, presenting your central argument or perspective on the title.

Body Paragraphs:

  • Organize your essay into body paragraphs, each focusing on a specific AOK or WOK, or a combination of both.
  • For each paragraph, start with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea.
  • Provide real-life examples to illustrate your points and demonstrate the application of TOK concepts.
  • Analyze the examples and discuss their relevance to the title, considering different perspectives and counterarguments.
  • Use TOK terminology and concepts throughout your analysis.

Conclusion:

  • Summarize the key points made in your essay, reinforcing how they support your thesis.
  • Restate your response to the prescribed title, highlighting any insights or implications.
  • Avoid introducing new ideas; the conclusion should be a synthesis of your argument.

Formatting:

5 Steps That Will Make Your IB Essay Great!

I’ve seen hundreds of successful IB students in the past and read lots of successful essays – and written a few of my own! What I’m going to do here is share with you a few tips that the most successful students always seem to use when writing their essays. Students who get 7s don’t have magical powers, they just use a few simple rules to get awesome grades in the IB. Let’s look at how you can do it too!

1) Keep It Simple

Although your essay might have lots of good evidence and be very interesting the overall structure should be simple. A clear simple argument, which makes a good point and supports it well is always going to be better than a long complicated argument which confuses the reader. So how can you tell if you have a clear simple argument? Try to explain your point to someone in a few sentences. You might sum up your essay like this: ‘ my essay argues that since the collapse of the Soviet Union the USA has continued to fear and suppress the Russian government.’ If you can’t sum your essay up like this, then it might be that you’re not really sure what your argument is and you should know what you’re talking about!

Check out this TED talk on the value of simplicity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWczWFPMA7o

2) Make a clear plan

You should have an argument you want to make and should know what this is (see point 1). Then you need to start fleshing out your argument . What evidence supports your idea. Who agrees with you, and who disagrees. Why are those people who disagree with you wrong? Lay out your argument logically, step by step. So if you’re going to argue that German farmers would suffer if a certain economic policy was imposed on them, you might like to start by explaining the situation those farmers are in. You might then explain how the policy works. You could then explain why it would harm the farmers. You could draw some examples of how a similar policy has hurt French farmers. Finally you might deal with some critics, who would disagree with you. Start with what you want to show then prove it step by step.

Now watch this 1 minute motivational video on the power of planning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jAE-a7nLXw

3) Logically show how your points support your argument

You should make it very clear how every point relates back to your main argument. Let’s say you are arguing that a poem is about murder and jealousy. It is not enough to say ‘the author uses lots of red and green imagery in the poem’. You must be very clear ‘the use of red and green imagery is symbolic of feelings of anger and jealousy’. The key is to imagine that your reader isn’t very smart and needs you to make everything very clear to them. If you do this you know your argument is clear – and this is very important.

4) Write the Introduction

Remember, your introduction should do twothings. One is to hook the reader in – you can do this with an interesting fact, or quote. The second purpose is to give them an idea about what they’re going to read. To let them know what to expect so your argument is easy to follow.

You might be wondering why this is point 4! Lots of successful students like to write the introduction after they’ve written the main body of their argument. This is because, for many students, their arguments change as they write and think about them. Only when they are finished can they write a really convincing introduction. So consider writing your introduction after your main essay is done!

ib essay writer

5) Check, check and check again

Read over your essay before you hand it in, check for spelling and grammar. Get someone else to check it and help you make it better. If possible find someone who is awesome at your subject and ask them to check your work to make it even better. Then ask someone who knows nothing about your subject to read your essay. If they can understand it you know it’s really clear, which is vital.

Now hand it in! When you’re satisfied, don’t delay, just give it straight in. And finally, when your teacher gives you feedback, listen to what he or she says and if you’re confused, ask him or her to clarify.

If you follow these steps you’ll find your next essay will be getting those higher grades and will be able to score more than ever on your next assessment!

Now continue refining your IB skills by learning how to write a stellar Extended Essay!

Ib extended essay rubric, ib extended essay—more resources.

The IB Extended Essay is a 4,000-word paper that asks you to immerse yourself in research and academic writing. A required part of the IB program, the Extended Essay is a chance to dig deep into a topic that fascinates you.

Although it’s no small task, the IB Extended Essay is an opportunity to gain practical research and writing skills that will come in handy again in college. As you write, you’ll learn how to:

  • Identify credible sources
  • Formulate a research question and limit your scope of research
  • Communicate ideas to an audience
  • Develop a well-supported argument

The IB Extended Essay is largely an independent, self-directed project, but don’t worry—the IB program doesn’t throw you into the deep end. You do get to select a mentor (usually a teacher at your school) to help guide you through the process. As you write, you’ll be required to meet with your mentor three times. As part of your final evaluation, your mentor will interview you in a final reflection section called a viva voce . During the viva voce, your mentor will check for plagiarism and malpractice, ask you to reflect on challenges and difficulties, and prompt you to discuss what you’ve learned through the research and writing process. Your mentor will then generate a report that factors into your final grade.

Your final essay must include the following:

  • Contents page
  • Introduction
  • Body of the essay
  • References and bibliography

For this essay, it will be up to you to generate a topic; the International Baccalaureate does not provide prompts. However, your essay will need to fit within one of six provided subject areas . You’ll choose from the following list of IB Extended Essay Topics:

  • Language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Mathematics

IB Extended Essay Topics (Continued)

At a glance, the subject areas might look limited, but the topics you can choose to write about are actually wide-ranging. The “Individuals and societies” category includes social science topics like economics, history, world religions, and philosophy. And, if you’re leaning toward “Science,” you can choose from classic subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics, or related topics like environmental systems or health science, among others.

The IB also offers a special “World Studies” option for students interested in researching global issues. This subject would allow you to center your writing on global issues such as migration, global health, cultural exchange, or climate change.

Wondering what an outstanding IB Extended Essay looks like? The International Baccalaureate provides quite a few sample student essays online . Here are five essays that earned A grades.

Language and literature: An exploration of an aspect of the narrative voice in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita

Environmental Systems and Societies: The economic impact of the 1995 reintroduction of grey wolves to Yellowstone National Park

Psychology: To what extent do social networking sites (SNS) usage lead to experience of anxiety in adolescents?

Music: Composition techniques in the 1st movement of Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, Op. 73

Business Management: Corporate Culture at Oracle

1) Pick something you’re passionate about

As you can see from the titles above, the IB Extended Essay is a great place to delve into a niche topic that fascinates you. Since you’ll be spending many months on this essay, you’ll want to pick a topic you genuinely enjoy spending time learning about. It’s also smart to choose something you’ve already learned about in your IB classes so that you have a strong foundation of knowledge to start with. In music class, do you love pondering why music makes us feel a certain way? Maybe an essay about music theory will keep your gears turning. Do you come alive trying to solve seemingly impossible problems in physics class? Now’s your chance to put those equations into action.

Since this essay is all about your academic interests, it’s also a good idea to pick a topic that’s relevant to what you plan to study in college. Selecting a relevant topic will provide you with significant exposure to the field and will also give you something meaningful to talk about in your college admissions essays.

2) Limit your scope

What’s the meaning of life? Why do wars happen? What is time? Some questions are just way too big to answer, and your IB Extended Essay is not a good place to tackle expansive, philosophical questions. Instead, think of this essay as a place to investigate one piece of a big question. If, let’s say, you’re generally interested in what helps women reach positions of leadership in business, this is a good place to examine how one or a few companies approach this issue. Or, if you’re interested in studying what inspires surrealist painters, you’ll want to pick one or a few painters to research, likely all from the same time period. For both these topics, you’d need a whole textbook to tackle the full question, but limiting your scope will make it much easier to write a clear and cohesive 4,000 words.

On the other hand, it’s possible to narrow your focus too much. It would be impossible, for example, to write 4,000 words about a single sentence in a novel. Make sure you talk about scope early and often with your mentor. Together, you can find the perfect Goldilocks scope for your project that’s not too big and not too small.

3) Choose a good mentor

Speaking of mentors, choosing wisely will help you enormously as you embark on your IB Extended Essay. You’ll want to make sure you choose someone with existing knowledge in your research topic. Your English teacher may be able to give you great writing advice, for example, but they won’t be able to guide your research and scope if you’re writing about marine animals or modern dance.

Before you approach a teacher, make sure you have at least one topic idea (or even a few ideas) in mind so that you can make sure they’ll be a good fit to supervise your project. When you meet with them, find out what their mentorship style is like. Make sure they’ll have time to read several drafts of your essays, meet with you a few times, and give you feedback. Some IB schools will require your IB Extended Essay mentor to sign an agreement form too, so make sure you find out what paperwork is required in advance.

4) Get organized, way organized

The IB Extended Essay is not something you can crank out the night before it’s due. The essay is meant to be a substantive, in-depth, thoughtful, and thoroughly researched analysis, and Rome simply isn’t built in a day. This might be the longest paper you’ve written to date, and this project might require more research than you’ve been asked to do before. Timelines vary by school, but you’ll likely spend between eight months and a year working on your IB Extended Essay. So, how will you pull it all off? For these 8-12 months, organization will be your guiding light. We recommend you:

  • Get started early. If your essay is due November of your senior year, start generating topic ideas during your junior year right after winter break.
  • Create a long-view schedule for yourself. What will you accomplish each month of your process?
  • Give yourself deadlines. Once you choose a mentor, suggest 2-3 draft deadline dates so that you will be held accountable throughout the writing process.
  • Find a note-taking system that works for you. You’ll be reading many articles and books and it’s hard to keep track of all your sources. Create a document or spreadsheet where you keep track of the sources you’ve found and check them off as you read. As you finish reading a text, type up important quotes and a few notes explaining how it connects to your topic and to your other texts.

5)Write a messy first draft

Writing never comes out perfect the first time, even for New York Times bestselling authors and the most experienced researchers. In your first draft, give yourself permission to get all your thoughts out, no matter how unstructured or rambling they are. Call this your brainstorming draft. When you’re ready to revisit it, see what patterns emerge, what common ideas you can group together, what beginning buds of ideas you can make bloom into full-fledged analysis.

6) Communicate for an audience

When you’re used to producing writing that only your teacher reads, it can be hard to remember to write for an audience. But at the end of the day, writing is communication , and the best writing is clear and thorough communication that anyone could pick up and read. For your IB Extended Essay, you’ll want to remember that many people will be reading your final essay, and not all of them will be experts in the niche topic you choose to study. Ask yourself: how can I explain my research to an audience who doesn’t already agree with my analysis?

To communicate to an audience, you’ll want to:

  • Provide lots of general background information on your topic.
  • Don’t assume your reader is familiar with your sources. Introduce them as if they’re guest speakers about to walk up to a podium and deliver a lecture.
  • After including quotes, facts, and figures, be sure to explain what those sources mean in your own words and how they connect to your bigger-picture argument.
  • Don’t assume your arguments are self-evident. In this essay, communicating for an audience means supplying ongoing interpretation and analysis, even if it feels like you’re explaining the obvious. Your reader isn’t on your research journey with you, so your points might not be so obvious to your reader.

Although your IB Extended Essay provides a report that factors into your grade, your essay will also be assessed by external examiners the IB. Per the IB Extended Essay Rubric , essays are graded on a scale from 0 to 34 based on 5 different criteria:

  • Criterion A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion C: Critical Thinking (12 points maximum)
  • Criterion D: Presentation (4 points maximum)
  • Criterion E: Engagement (6 points maximum)

As you can see, Critical Thinking is the most significant rubric category. This means that the IB wants to see you arrive at your own unique analysis of your topic, drawing connections between sources and data, and making well-supported arguments. This means they want a lot of you: your ideas, your interpretations, your thoughts. Make sure you emphasize that in your essay, but of course don’t forget the other categories.

The score a student receives corresponds to a letter grade scale that is slightly different than what we’re accustomed to in the U.S. Here’s the letter grade to numerical score breakdown:

You must earn a D or higher to receive your IB Diploma. To learn more about the different criteria included in the IB Extended Essay Rubric, you can explore the IB’s full guide to the Extended Essay .

Four essays that helped earn IB students their admission to university

4 essays image resized

We asked recent IB Diploma Programme (DP) graduates from around the world to submit essays that played a role in their admissions process to the university of their choice. As a student in the DP or Career-related Programme (CP) , university admissions teams want to know what you are passionate about, show how you will become a part of their community, and demonstrate that you are ready for university-level work.

Though not always required, telling your story in an essay gives you a unique opportunity to show universities who you are. We selected excerpts from four unique essays, each with a different approach. Thanks to IB graduates Esha Indani, Kamila Janmohamed, Kardeisha Provo, and Ryan Lam for allowing us to share excerpts from their essays and personal statements.

1. When your interests are the perfect match

Esha Indani — Why Penn?

Can you use your dream school as inspiration? Esha Indani did when she chose to show how the fundamental values she developed as a student at the International School of Geneva – La Châtaigneraie in Switzerland were a strong match for the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She approached her personal essay by linking her research interests to the university’s existing programs.

“My essay primarily focuses on my passion and interest for sustainability and renewable energy sources and technologies” she explained, “but at a deeper level it looks at how my experiences … have shaped this interest and have provided me with the motivation and direction … knowledge for action is the motto of the Wharton School and in my opinion, I think this is what my IB education prepared me for.”

The experience that shaped Esha’s interests in sustainability

“Saturday mornings in Switzerland in September are unusually cold. I observed this as I hurried off with large bags of trash to be recycled at the local déchetterie. Having been brought up in a country that remains diligently protective over its environment, I gradually developed an appreciation and interest in the use and applications of green technology and sustainability … so when choosing where I wanted to study, I knew for sure that my institute would have to be as passionate as I am about both business and sustainable development.”

Demonstrating a commitment to work in this area

“The school’s association with the Penn Green Campus Partnership through IGEL [the Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership] allows me to combine my two passions into one academic and social experience. As editor-in-chief of the school newspaper … I strived to combine the manufacturing of a product with my interest in sustainability by switching to using recycled paper … I was able to not only incorporate aspects of sustainability in its production process, but also express my thoughts as well as those of the students on the three Ecolint campuses on a green future for the world.”

Identifying how her research fit within the school’s program

“At Wharton, I hope to take advantage of the flexibility of its inter-disciplinary curriculum to combine a business education with one in sustainable development … I would be most interested in researching the development of cheap clean energy, which fundamentally holds the key to a sustainable future. To me, business and international trade are more than careers – they are media through which I can serve my local and international communities.”

2. The one thing that makes you most unique

Kamila Janmohamed — Flat

It’s a personal essay, so make it uniquely you. Kamila Janmohamed focused her essay on something that makes her stand out and coincidentally caused her to stumble on her passion. She completed her essay as a part of the common application while she was a student at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa in Kenya. It earned her admission to Yale University in Connecticut, USA.

What makes Kamila unique

“There are three things that must never, ever be flat: tires, bubble wrap, and feet. For the first decade of my existence, it seemed as though my extremities were blissfully unaware of their offensive lack of an arch. I’d spent my entire life stubbing toes on table legs and impaling myself on Lego bricks. It wasn’t until someone pointed out that my feet were different, that I actually began to see them that way.”

“Armed with warnings of how I would never be able to wear heels, my mother drove me to a public hospital, where, rumour had it, an orthopeadic surgeon worked wonders. Thinking cosmetic concerns pretentious, I didn’t pay nearly as much attention to these threats as I did the portent of a life riddled with crippling back pain. Yet, I was apprehensive about the quality of care I would receive…”

“… as I sat in that courtyard with its peeling walls, waiting alongside crying babies and watching solemn-looking adults, most of whom queued for hours on end to see a doctor who would probably be gone by their next visit, I became painfully aware of the privilege I was accustomed to. With that sinking sense of apologetic guilt one feels at realizing how trivial their grievances have been, I began to feel more appreciative of the opportunities I had been afforded. In quickly judging my surroundings based on what I had been conditioned to expect, I had denied the hospital that same chance.”

How she found her academic interests

“… I wouldn’t be able to make the institution less dependent on aid, or increase its permanent staff as a doctor, but I could by working in health administration and education. So, I presented my own field of interest: public health.”

“As much irritation as my ‘abnormal’ feet have caused me, I owe them a lot. From learning about the importance of having your facts right, to not being judgmental, I have come to realize, and appreciate, just how chameleonic we are. Our acuities are not resistant to change, and being open to these changes encourages that self-instigated growth that comes from having our conceptions challenged, which, in my opinion, is the most enduring kind out there. While my feet might remain unrelentingly flat, I know from my experience with them, that my perceptions will always be far more pliable, and that is compensation enough.

3. Your personal history and sense of community

Kardeisha Provo — My people

Sometimes to get to the future, you need to use the past. Kardeisha Provo’s personal essay prompt for Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, asked her to “discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.” Coming from Cole Harbour District High School , located in the far northeast of Canada in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia — she approached the essay through her personal identity and the history of her community .

Linking her identity to her community’s history

“Originating from ancestors who fled North on the Underground Railroad, Black Loyalists from the American Civil War, Refugees from the War of 1812 and Jamaican Maroon, I know we are people of resilience and strength. North Preston, Nova Scotia is the largest and oldest Indigenous Black community in Canada and the place I call home. My ancestors consist of people who settled on unceded Mi’kmaq Territory and became stewards of the land while living alongside Indigenous people present.”

A realization that sparked personal growth

“More recently, I realized the media and outside platforms were continuing to paint an inaccurate image of my community … I chose to change the narrative. After hours of filming and editing videos I created my own YouTube Channel that is dedicated to who we are, my personal journey being from North Preston and the realities we face being the largest Black Community in Canada.”

“I created the YouTube channel in January 2017. Over the year, my content grew from 10 viewers to 4.4k views and continues to build each day. Through this journey, I’ve realized the only important viewers are the members of our community. The only view that truly matters is how we view ourselves …the experience I’ve had has made me realize I must continue on this path of growing into a leader that is needed in the world.”

4. Thinking outside of the box

Ryan Lam — Flushing the toilet

Is humor a good idea to use in a personal essay? It’s something to consider carefully, but not to overlook if it is part of your approach to the world. Ryan Lam used a surprising situation to demonstrate the thought process he uses to solve a real-world problem. This essay was submitted as part of the common application and supported admission to the Universeity of Pennsylvania after graduating from Seminole High School , Florida, USA.

Presenting the problem at hand

“What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? The toilet flushes … it was the third week of the Science Student Training Program at the University of Florida, and I was finally residing in a dormitory room with three males who shared my passion for Star Trek … I went about emptying the contents of my bladder into our seemingly innocuous toilet. Upon flushing, Poseidon’s stormy surge of at least a thousand years of backlogged fecal matter rose up to greet me … we had four of the greatest budding scientific minds in the state and we could surely fix this seemingly trivial problem.”

Evaluating potential solutions

“In short, we lacked the materials to properly approach the problem in any sort of conventional manner. I proposed that a curved rod of condensed aluminum foil may be able to dislodge the clogging bodies, but invoking the scientific method quickly demonstrated that we were unable to engineer a device of sufficient sturdiness to achieve our goal.”

“…we decided to sleep on the problem, but the next morning, duty was still calling, science was still failing, and morale was at an all-time low. There was talk among us of sneaking out to buy a plunger, but there was no getting around it; we were all out of realistic ideas … Like a harpooning fisherman, I plunged my bare fist into the saccharine mess and wrangled a sopping beast out of its ocean home.”

Most importantly, lessons learned

“While I can appreciate a sense of reservation, being obsessively hoity toity about everything is such a drag. At the end of the day, stepping up to do something practical is always a necessary step. Don’t get me wrong; it can be a lot of fun to take the time to play around with creative approaches to a problem, but sometimes someone just needs to take the initiative to do what nobody else is willing to do. Whether that’s quickly ripping off a bandage or boldly shoving my hand into a toilet, once the challenge is overcome, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. And to me, helping as many people as possible overcome their own challenges will always be more important than any mental barriers to getting something done.”

Properly Write Your Degree

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

Not sure which degree you are graduating with? Here is a list of Undergraduate Majors and corresponding degrees:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Communication
  • College of Education
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Health Sciences

Gig workers are writing essays for AI to learn from

  • Companies are hiring highly educated gig workers to write training content for AI models .
  • The shift toward more sophisticated trainers comes as tech giants scramble for new data sources.
  • AI could run out of data to learn from by 2026, one research institute has warned.

Insider Today

As artificial intelligence models run out of data to train themselves on, AI companies are increasingly turning to actual humans to write training content.

For years, companies have used gig workers to help train AI models on simple tasks like photo identification , data annotation, and labelling. But the rapidly advancing technology now requires more advanced people to train it.

Companies such as Scale AI and Surge AI are hiring part-timers with graduate degrees to write essays and creative prompts for the bots to gobble up, The New York Times reported . Scale AI, for example, posted a job last year looking for people with Master's degrees or PhDs, who are fluent in either English, Hindi, or Japanese and have professional writing experience in fields like poetry, journalism, and publishing.

Related stories

Their mission? To help AI bots "become better writers," Scale AI wrote in the posting.

And an army of workers are needed to do this kind of work. Scale AI has as many as tens of thousands of contractors working on its platform at a time, per the Times.

"What really makes the A.I. useful to its users is the human layer of data, and that really needs to be done by smart humans and skilled humans and humans with a particular degree of expertise and a creative bent," Willow Primack, the vice president of data operations at Scale AI, told the New York Times. "We have been focusing on contractors, particularly within North America, as a result."

The shift toward more sophisticated gig trainers comes as tech giants scramble to find new data to train their technology on. That's because the programs learn so incredibly fast that they're already running out of available resources to learn from. The vast trove of online information — everything from scientific papers to news articles to Wikipedia pages — is drying up.

Epoch, an AI research institute, has warned that AI could run out of data by 2026.

So, companies are finding more and more creative ways to make sure their systems never stop learning. Google has considered accessing its customers' data in Google Docs , Sheets, and Slides while Meta even thought about buying publishing house Simon & Schuster to harvest its book collection, Business Insider previously reported.

Watch: Nearly 50,000 tech workers have been laid off — but there's a hack to avoid layoffs

How to Write a Body Section for Your IB Extended Essay?

IB Extended Essay Body Section

Luke MacQuoid

Hello, fellow IB students! As a seasoned IB writer, I’m excited to share insights on crafting the perfect body section for your Extended Essay (EE) . Having been on the IB path, I understand the importance of effectively structuring your paper. So, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of writing a compelling and cohesive body section for your EE.

Understanding the IB Extended Essay Body Section

First, it’s crucial to grasp what the IB expects in the body of your EE. According to general IB criteria, this section should be the meat of your essay. It’s where you develop your arguments, analyze data, and present your research. Ideally, each paragraph should seamlessly connect to your thesis, contributing to a well-rounded analysis.

Now, let’s dig a bit deeper. The body of your Extended Essay isn’t just about stating facts; it’s about making connections. Each paragraph should introduce a new aspect of your topic and link it back to your central thesis. This approach ensures that your essay remains cohesive and focused.

Remember, the body is where you showcase your critical thinking skills. It’s not enough to present information; you must also interpret it. It means evaluating your sources , drawing comparisons, and highlighting contrasts. Your analysis should provide insights that go beyond the obvious, shedding light on the complexity of your topic.

Furthermore, balance is critical. While it’s important to include detailed information and analysis, you must also ensure that your essay remains readable and engaging. Long, unwieldy paragraphs can lose the reader’s interest, so it’s wise to break down complex ideas into manageable chunks. Each paragraph should ideally be a mini-essay with a clear introductory sentence, supporting evidence, and a concluding sentence that ties the point back to your thesis.

Planning a Body Section for Your IB Extended Essay

In my opinion, a well-planned outline is your map to success in writing the body of your IB Extended Essay. Before you begin the writing process, organizing your thoughts and research is essential. Here’s a practical approach to planning your EE body:

  • Identify Key Themes . Start by identifying the main themes or arguments you want to research in your essay. These should directly support your thesis statement.
  • Gather and Organize Evidence . For each theme, gather the relevant research, data, or examples you plan to use. It might include quotations, statistics, or theoretical analysis.
  • Develop a Logical Sequence . Arrange your themes in a logical order. It could be chronological, thematic, or based on the strength of the argument.
  • Plan Paragraphs . Break down each theme into individual paragraphs. Each paragraph should start with a clear topic sentence, followed by evidence and analysis.
  • Integrate Personal Insight . Consider where your insights or interpretations can add value. This personal touch can differentiate your essay from others.
  • Consider Counterarguments . Acknowledge and address potential counterarguments or alternative perspectives. It demonstrates critical thinking and depth of understanding.
  • Plan Transitions . Consider how you will transition from one theme or paragraph to the next. Smooth transitions help maintain the flow of your essay.

Once this outline is in place, the writing becomes much more manageable. From my experience, integrating research with your insights can be a delicate balance. Your essay should not just regurgitate information but interpret and analyze it to support your thesis. It is where your unique perspective becomes invaluable and what makes your EE truly yours.

Remember, each paragraph in the body should serve a clear purpose and contribute directly to your argument. Avoid going off on tangents that don’t support your thesis. Maintaining a critical eye throughout the writing process is essential.

Writing Effective Paragraphs for Body Section of Extended Essay

A strong topic sentence is indeed the cornerstone of a good paragraph. This sentence should clearly state the main idea or point of the paragraph and set the tone for what follows. It is a mini-thesis statement, guiding the reader on what to expect. It is crucial for maintaining focus and ensuring that each paragraph contributes meaningfully to your argument.

Following the topic sentence, your supporting details and analysis come into play. This is where you’ll present evidence from your research, such as data, quotes, or examples. But presenting evidence isn’t enough. You must connect this evidence to your topic sentence and overall thesis. It might involve interpreting the evidence, discussing its implications, or explaining how it supports your argument.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Variety in Sentence Structure . Use a mix of short and long sentences to keep the reader engaged. This variety makes your writing more dynamic and easier to read.
  • Use of Evidence . Support your assertions with concrete evidence. Whether it’s data, quotations, or literary techniques, make sure they are relevant and effectively illustrate your point.
  • Critical Analysis . Don’t just present facts; analyze them. Discuss their significance, question their validity, or compare and contrast different viewpoints.
  • Linking Back to the Thesis . Regularly remind the reader how your points relate to the overall thesis of your essay. It ensures that your essay remains cohesive and focused.
  • Concluding Sentences . End each paragraph with a sentence summarizing the main point or transitioning into the next paragraph. It might involve restating the critical idea of the paragraph or hinting at what’s coming next.

Remember, each paragraph should contain a self-contained argument contributing to your thesis. By crafting effective paragraphs, you ensure your EE is a collection of facts and a cohesive and compelling argument.

How to Maintain Interest and Clarity in Your Body Section?

Engaging your reader throughout the body section of your Extended Essay is a crucial aspect of effective writing. From my experience, blending interesting content with clear and cohesive writing can significantly enhance the impact of your essay. Here’s how you can achieve this balance.

Paragraphs for Body Section of Extended Essay

1. Engage with Relevant Examples

An effective way to maintain interest is by incorporating examples that resonate with your audience. These should be directly relevant to your topic and serve to illustrate your points more vividly. For instance, a brief narrative about a significant event or individual can make your analysis more tangible and engaging if your essay is on a historical topic . Similarly, for scientific issues, real-world applications of a theory can bring abstract concepts to life.

2. Use Varied Sentence Structures

A mix of short and long sentences can make your writing more dynamic. Long sentences are helpful for detailed explanations, while short sentences can provide emphasis and keep the reader’s attention. Be mindful of not overcomplicating your sentences, as clarity should always be a priority.

3. Make Use of Metaphors and Analogies

Metaphors and analogies are powerful tools for explaining complex ideas in simpler terms. They can also make your writing more engaging and memorable. However, ensure these metaphors are appropriate and do not stretch them too far from their intended meaning.

4. Clarity in Argumentation

Each paragraph should have a clear point that ties back to your thesis. Avoid ambiguity in your arguments. Clearly state your point, support it with evidence, and explain its relevance to your thesis. This clarity will help the reader follow your argument more easily.

5. Cohesive Flow Between Paragraphs

Transitions between paragraphs are essential for maintaining a smooth flow in your essay. Each paragraph should naturally lead to the next. It can be achieved through transition sentences at the end of paragraphs or through thematic links that connect different sections of your essay.

6. Address Potential Counterarguments

Acknowledging and addressing counterarguments can make your essay more comprehensive and thought-provoking. It shows that you have considered multiple perspectives and are confident in your position. It strengthens your argument and keeps readers engaged by presenting a balanced view.

7. Avoid Jargon and Overly Complex Language

While using technical terms relevant to your subject is essential, avoid unnecessary jargon or overly complex language that could confuse the reader. You aim to communicate your ideas effectively, not impress with complex vocabulary.

8. Conciseness and Precision

Be concise and precise in your writing. Avoid lengthy digressions or unnecessary details that might sidetrack the reader. Focus on the most critical points and articulate them clearly.

9. Personal Touch

Lastly, adding a bit of your voice or experience can make your EE more relatable and interesting. It can be particularly effective in subjects like literature or social sciences, where personal interpretation plays a significant role.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Body Section of Extended Essay

Even the most experienced writers sometimes fall prey to common pitfalls that weaken their essays. Being aware of these mistakes is the first step toward avoiding them. Here’s a list of some common errors to watch out for, along with strategies for steering clear of them:

  • Making sweeping statements without adequate support can undermine the credibility of your essay. To avoid this, ensure that every claim is backed up with specific evidence or examples.
  • Repeating the same points or arguments can make your essay monotonous and unengaging. Be vigilant about introducing new information or perspectives in each paragraph.
  • Every part of your EE should relate to your central thesis or research question . Avoid going off on tangents or including irrelevant information.
  • More than simply presenting information is required; you must analyze and interpret it. This turns a collection of facts into a convincing piece of academic writing.
  • A disorganized essay can confuse the reader and weaken your argument. Use a clear and logical structure for your essay, with well-defined sections and coherent paragraphs.
  • Ignoring counterarguments or alternative viewpoints can make your essay seem biased. Address potential criticisms of your argument and explain why your thesis still stands.
  • Inconsistent or incorrect referencing can lead to accusations of plagiarism , which is a severe offense in the IB. Ensure you correctly apply the citation style specified in your EE guidelines.

So, avoiding these common mistakes in your EE body section requires careful planning, thorough research, and thoughtful writing. Keep your thesis in focus, support your arguments with detailed evidence, and maintain a clear and logical structure.

With these tips and your personal touch, you’re well on your way to writing an Extended Essay that meets IB standards and showcases your unique insights and analytical skills. Happy writing, and trust in your abilities! And if you need help, then just contact Extended Essay Writers .
