Short Essay On Save Environment | 250 Words

Introduction.

The conditions or surroundings in which we all live are called the environment. The main elements of the environment are air, water, temperature, weather conditions and more.

If any of these elements gets disturbed from their real form, we will have to face harmful effects and serious problems. For example, if the temperature goes very high or very low, it will result in an uncomfortable life.

Essay on Save Environment | Introduction

The Importance of the Environment

Long ago our earth developed a perfect environment for life. All living beings completely depend on the environment to live a comfortable life. But we humans have used it just for the sake of earning more money. We are damaging the environment more and more daily.

As a result, the real form of the initial environment is getting changed. This change is also known as climate change .

The main causes that result in changes in the environment are pollution of all types, the problem of global warming, and deforestation. But human activities are considered the biggest cause of it.

Save Environment Save Life

As we know that damaged environment risks the expectancy of life. We need to take some steps immediately to save the environment and revert it to its original form. Deforestation needs to be stopped fully because trees are our best friends and they create a balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Pollution of all types must be controlled at each level. It is the greatest enemy of the environment. Individuals and government together need to do their duties to control it. Humans can use a bicycle for covering short distances.

The use of electric vehicles should be increased. Apart from this, Waste management, Recycling, and using natural resources efficiently are some powerful ways to save our environment from damage.

To sum it up, The environment is the base of the life cycle. It is the most precious gift of nature. But now our environment is in danger. Saving the environment is very important for living a comfortable life. It is the biggest challenge for humans to revert the environment to its real state. But nothing is impossible.

Long Essay On Save Environment | 500 words

The environment consists of many elements but air, water, weather and temperature are very chief among all them. From our first breath to death, We all are sustained by the environment. It equips us with every small or big requirement in life.

To live a comfortable life all living beings demand a perfect environment. But it is getting changed day by day. And this is an alarming threat to humanity and also to the expectancy of life on Earth. It is time to fix the problem and get the initial form of the environment back to normal.

Threats to the environment

There are some natural and some man-made threats to the environment. The first reason is pollution which disbalances the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Global warming is the second reason for the change in the average temperature of the earth. Although it is partially caused by natural events. But with some effort, it can be controlled.

Most noteworthy, Deforestation is a major threat to ecological disbalance. The number of trees on the planet is lowering at a high speed. On the other hand, the plantation of new trees is very slow. Another threat is the conversion of forests into farmlands and factories.

Causes for changing environment

If we talk about the causes of climate change, human activities get the first rank. Humans have damaged the environment seriously.

After the industrial revolution, the burning of fossil fuels increased drastically which causes a high amount of carbon dioxide in the environment. Carbon dioxide is the main reason for human-induced climate change.

Furthermore, there are some natural causes for the change in the environment. The energy we get from the Sun is not constant, it varies over time and impacts the environment. Another reason is emissions from volcanoes. Apart from these, natural greenhouse gases impact the environment at a huge level.

Save Environment Save Earth

To save the earth and keep it suitable for living beings, it is important to save the environment. The environment of the earth has developed over millions of years.

As we know an imperfect environment risks the prospect of life. We need to take some steps promptly to save the environment and revert it to its pure form.

For the sake of earning more money, we humans are exploiting the environment. As a result, we are to face a lot of issues that are affecting our lives. Now the time has come to help the environment because we depend on the environment.

Ways to Save the Environment

Changes in the environment are neither completely caused by humans nor fully by natural events. The causes are at both levels. We can put some effort to save the environment.

Pollution Control- The problem of pollution is becoming a grieve threat to humanity and to the environment as well. This issue needs to be controlled soon.

Reforestation-  As we know that air plays an important role in the environment, so reforestation can be proven a full-fledged solution to revert the issue to normal.

3 R’s formula-  First “R” is about  Reduce  which means to reduce the production of unnecessary products. The second “R” talks about  Reuse  which mean using the available things efficiently. And the last one refers to  Recycling  things to make them reusable.

Forest conservation- This is a great way to save the environment because growing new trees demand a long time than saving the existing ones.

Soil Conservation- This is yet another significant way to save the Environment. This is not easy but very helpful. We need to control floods, landslides, and soil erosion.

Final Words (Conclusion)

In conclusion, the environment has helped life to sustain itself on Earth. But it is now going in an adverse direction. The harsh reality is that human activities are considered the most impacting cause. Now it is a need of the hour to save the environment. However, the healing process will take time, but continuous efforts will make a difference.

Essay on Save Environment | Conclusion

When is world environment day ?

The environment is celebrated on 5th June every year to spread awareness about environmental issues.

What are threats to the environment?

The main threats to the environment are the increasing amount of carbon dioxide, The increasing temperature of the earth’s surface and Deforestation.

Why is our environment changing?

There are many factors in a rapidly changing environment. Some are natural and some are man-made. Global warming, pollution, deforestation and changes in the climate are some of the main reasons.

Save Environment Essay

Essay On Save Environment - A healthy natural equilibrium in the air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources is referred to as the environment. Pollution is the process of contaminating the environment with dangerous substances. Measures should be taken to prevent these threats from threatening human, animal, and plant life before spiralling out of control. Here are 100, 200 and 500 word essays on save environment.

Save Environment Essay

100 Words Essay On Save Environment

Our environment must be safeguarded and conserved. Natural energy conservation is critical since it maintains us. There are several strategies to protect our environment, the first of which is to reduce pollution levels. Because vehicle smoke creates a lot of pollution, using Natural Gas as a fuel for cars will cut smoke emissions. Automobiles powered by batteries are also environmentally favourable. Solar energy is used to protect our natural resources. Solar energy is non-polluting and renewable.

We must avoid dumping rubbish and manufacturing byproducts into the water. Namami Gange, for example, attempts to clean waterways and is a step toward a cleaner environment. We all must take responsibility and do our share to protect the environment.

200 Words Essay On Save Environment

The environment is a geographical area or natural world that is affected by human activity and includes mineral soil, air and water, animals, and so on. Concrete structures and roads replaced the natural landscape as Homo sapiens moved toward urbanisation and industrialisation, which led to medical, industrial, and sociological growth.

However, human reliance on these natural environments for food, water for drinking and agriculture, fuelling wood, and so on continues. Our dependence on nature is so significant that we cannot thrive without conserving its resources. The environment has an impact on an organism's survival and development.

Types Of Natural Resources

These natural resources are broadly classified as renewable or non-renewable. Renewable resources are those that can be naturally replenished. Water, forests, and crops are examples of these. Non-renewable resources, on the other hand, such as oil and minerals, cannot be renewed and, in the current environment, are rapidly depleted.

Population expansion and 'consumerism' on the part of the wealthy sectors of society are the primary causes of this rapid depletion of all natural resources. This has resulted in the extinction of fauna and trees and the disruption of the environment. As a result, it is past time to stop wasting these natural resources and use them wisely.

500 Words Essay On Save Environment

The natural environment's gifts are a source of joy for humans and other living species. These natural resources, such as air, sunlight, fresh water, fossil fuels, and so on, are so essential that life cannot exist without them. However, due to the enormous population's desire for material items, these resources are being squandered and abused to excess. This 'economic progress,' is proving to be more detrimental to human health.

Why Is There A Need To Save The Environment

The following points describe pollution caused by the misuse and waste of natural resources and the repercussions on the life of living beings on Earth. Thus, to save life on Earth, we must protect our environment:

Air Pollution | The increased use of gasoline and diesel for transportation and the combustion of fossil fuels in industries to generate energy contribute significantly to air pollution. This raises sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants. These dangerous gases significantly impact human health, producing chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, and other respiratory disorders. Furthermore, by depleting the ozone layer and exposing humans to ultraviolet radiation, air pollution hastens 'global warming' and weakens the immune system.

Water Pollution | Water pollution is caused by the suspension of water-soluble inorganic compounds from factories, releasing untreated human and animal wastes into freshwater, and the draining fertilisers and pesticides during river irrigation. This renders the water unsafe for drinking, causing gastrointestinal disorders and cancer.

Soil Pollution | Using chemical fertilisers and insecticides in soil kills harmful and good pests, resulting in less nutritious crops. Furthermore, long-term exposure to chemical-infected crops caused by soil contamination causes health problems. Soil erosion induced by excessive deforestation and building increases the frequency of floods, resulting in catastrophic damage to human life.

Noise Pollution | Excessive noise from factories and cars can cause physical damage to the ear, leading to temporary or permanent hearing loss. Noise pollution harms Homo sapiens' mental, emotional, and psychological health, generating stress, anxiety, and irritation, and so impairing work performance.

Methods For Environmental Protection

Looking back through history, we can see that our forefathers were more concerned with environmental preservation than we are today. This may be seen in Sunderlal Bahuguna's contributions to the Chipko Movement, which protected forest resources. Similarly, Medha Patkar effectively rescued the tribal people's habitat, which the construction of dams on the Narmada River had severely harmed. Likewise, as today's young, we may take small measures to conserve our natural environment:

Initiatives That Students Can Take

To avoid the overuse of non-renewable resources, we should promote and apply the principle of reducing, i.e. reduce, recycle, and reuse. Metal scrap, for example, can be utilised to create new metal items.

Save electricity by using energy-saving tube lights and bulbs.

Use e-books and e-paper instead of paper and wood products whenever possible.

Reduce your reliance on fossil fuels by walking, carpooling, or public transportation.

Instead of plastic bags, use jute/cloth bags.

Make use of rechargeable batteries or solar panels.

Establishing a compost bin to make manure to limit the need for fertilisers.

The government has devised several projects and enacted legislation to safeguard nature and animals. Everyone must continue to conserve the environment for future generations as we reap its advantages.

Save Environment Essay

Environment commonly refers to the surroundings in which all living and non-living things reside and establish a sense of attraction with one another. These include air, water, soil, human beings, animals, etc. However being a part of the city, town or village, we observe that the environment around us was originally a natural landscape, for instance, a desert, a forest, or even a river that has been shovelled by humans for buildings, roads and factories.

But even the people belonging to the metropolitan cities get their food, fish, fuel wood and fodder supplied from rural areas, which are eventually extracted from the natural landscapes. Hence, our dependence on natural resources has made it essential for us to take considerable measures to prevent the destruction and depletion of our natural environment.

Long and Short Essay on Save Environment in English

Here are the essays of varied lengths on the aforementioned topic to help you with your exams and assignments. You can select any Save Environment essay in accordance with your requirement:

Short Essay on Save Environment – Essay 1 (200 words)

A geographical area or the natural world that includes mineral soil, air and water, animals, etc. which is affected by human activity is termed as environment. With the movement of the Homo sapiens towards urbanisation and industrialization which led to the development in medical, industrial and societal field, the natural landscape got replaced by concrete buildings and roads. However, our dependency on these natural landscapes for food, water for drinking and agriculture, fuel wood, etc. still persists. This dependency of ours on nature is to such a large extent that we cannot survive without protecting its resources.

These natural resources can broadly be categorized into renewable and non-renewable ones. Renewable resources are the ones that can be regenerated naturally. These include water, forest, crops etc. On the contrary, the non-renewable resources such as oils and minerals cannot be replenished and in the present scenario are being consumed at a very fast pace.

The main factors leading to this rapid depletion of all forms of natural resources are population growth and ‘consumerism’ on the part of the privileged sections of the society. This has led to loss of not only wildlife and trees, but has also disrupted the eco-system. Thus, it is high time that we should stop misusing these natural resources and instead use them judiciously.

Essay on Importance of Saving Our Environment – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

The sum total of all the surroundings of a living being including air, water, sunlight, etc. and also the living organism like animals, plants, humans, etc that provide sustainable conditions for growth and development, constitutes the environment.

Importance of Saving Our Environment

Today in the industrial and urban sectors, this environment comprises of well paved roads, multi-story concrete buildings and skyscrapers. Their main motive is to accommodate the increasing population and provide various luxuries to the affluent sections of the society.

However, despite this movement the reliability of humans on the resources derived from nature still persists. We use air for breathing, water for drinking and other daily chores. Even the food we eat is derived from plants and animals including vegetables, milk, eggs, etc. In consideration of these requirements, protection of these resources has become very important which can be categorised as:

  • Renewable Resources: As the word suggests, renewable resources can be renewed naturally through rainfall and re-growth. However, these will be depleted if their consumption at this fast pace continues, even before nature can replace them. For example, rubber, timber, fresh water.
  • Non-Renewable Resources: These resources have been formed over a period of millions of years under the soil and hence cannot be replenished. Once used, the non-renewable resources including fossil fuels such as coal and oil can’t be renewed.

The need of the hour is to prevent the misuse of resources and instead use them judiciously as Mother Earth cannot sustain with this rapid utilization of resources. This is only possible through ‘sustainable development’. Moreover, the solid and liquid by-products discarded as garbage by manufacturing units should be equitably managed in order to prevent pollution that leads to various diseases like cancer and gastro-intestinal diseases. This is possible only if steps are taken on the individual basis, rather than depending entirely on the government.

Essay on How to Protect and Save Environment – Essay 3 (400 words)

Since the beginning of time, environment has helped us in establishing a relationship with the flora and fauna, and has ultimately determined our formation and survival. It has given us various gifts, for e.g. water, sunlight, air, creatures and fossil fuels which have made our planet worth living.

How to Protect and Save Environment

Since these resources are available in abundance, they are being overly used and consumed at a very high pace due to explosion in population and also to meet the luxurious demands of the privileged sections of the society. Thus, it has become important to conserve these natural resources in all the ways. Here are a few ways in which the excessive use of natural resources can be preserved:

  • Mineral and Energy Resources: The energy extracted from various minerals including coal, oil, and various fossil fuels is used massively in power generation plants and also in vehicles, which contribute majorly towards air pollution. In order to prevent the air borne diseases caused by their extraction and consumption, the use of the renewable resources like sunlight, wind and tidal energy must be promoted.
  • Forest Resources: Forests play a very vital role in preventing soil erosion and also reduces the effects of drought as they prevent the running off of the rain water from the ground. Moreover, they not only keep the climatic conditions under control but also maintain carbon dioxide levels for the living organism. Thus, it is vital to preserve and expand forests which can be done by promoting the sale of non-timber products, promoting the states rotational grazing schemes and most importantly planting more trees.
  • Water Resources: The aquatic ecosystems are used by people for their daily chores, such as drinking, cooking, washing etc. and the water cycle maintains it through evaporation and precipitation. However, fresh water is being overly consumed by man and wasted because of deforestation (floods). It is also getting polluted at a massive rate. In order to prevent water crisis in the near future, a number of measures need to be taken, which include building of small reservoirs instead of mega projects, promoting drip irrigation, preventing leakages, treating and recycling municipal waste.
  • Food Resources: The various technologies used during the green revolution that helped in reducing starvation by booming the production of crops, in actuality degraded the quality of soil. Thus, sustainable methods of food production need to be used that include using alternates to inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, promoting consumption of crops that grow on poor soil, etc.

Thus, it is only through sustainable development and proper management that we as individuals can take steps to protect and save environment.

Essay on Save Environment Save Earth – Essay 4 (500 words)

“No generation has a freehold on this earth. All we have is a life tenancy– with a full repairing lease.” These words have been very aptly quoted by Margaret Thatcher and define our temporary relationship with the natural environment. Despite various gifts that we have been provided by nature to make our life seemingly easy and this planet worth living, such as air, sunlight, water, animals and minerals, we have for our own selfish gains overtly exploited them.

Need to Save Environment to Save Earth

To meet our present day needs due to increasing population levels, we have been persistently without any check consuming the natural resources. We are not concerned for our future generations. Thus, the need of the hour is to conserve both the renewable and non-renewable resources, provided by nature if we really need to save mother Earth.

Effects of Pollution on Environment

During the last few decades, water, air and land have been contaminated for achieving short term gains at the cost of long term ecological losses to the environment. These undesirable changes have had disastrous effects not only on plants and wildlife, but also on humans which have been discussed as follows:

  • Air Pollution: The development of transportation system and large-scale use of petrol and diesel has accelerated the production of both undesirable solid and gaseous particles in the air, in quantities that are harmful for the environment. With the increase in the levels of carbon monoxide, chloro-fluoro-carbons, sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons and even lead, the ozone layer responsible for protection from ultra violet rays has started depleting. This has also resulted in increase in temperatures, commonly known as ‘global warming’.
  • Water Pollution: Untreated human and animal wastes, suspension of water soluble inorganic chemicals from industries such as mercury and lead and draining of organic chemicals including detergent and oils in the fresh water ponds and rivers has made their water unfit for any use. This has adversely affected aquatic life, reduced crop yields and also made the water unsafe for consumption by both humans and animals.
  • Soil Pollution: Due to the excessive spraying of fertilizers and pesticides like DDT, use of irrigation water that is high in salts for the purpose of increasing crop yields, in the long run renders land useless. This is known as soil pollution which is also accelerated by soil erosion caused due to human activities such as construction, deforestation, etc.
  • Noise Pollution: Noise emanating from vehicles, factories and specially the bursting of crackers during Diwali in India contributes to noise pollution. This adversely affects the animals as they are not able to adapt to such noises and in turn undergo hearing loss.

Every individual must solely contribute towards conserving the environment and not majorly depend on the government itself. Knowingly or unknowingly we contribute towards pollution on daily basis. Hence, as the consumers of the gifts of nature it is our responsibility to promote rain water harvesting, take part both individually and collectively in the process of recycling products, avoiding wastage of resources such as electricity and fresh water, etc. It is by taking little steps that we can effectively improve the health of our ailing planet.

Essay on Save Environment Save Life – Essay 5 (600 words)

The gifts provided by the natural environment are bliss for mankind as well as for the other living organisms. These natural resources including air, sunlight, fresh water, fossil fuels etc. are so vital that life can never be possible without them. However, with the increase in the greed for material goods by the large population, these resources are being used and misused beyond their limits. This, rather than ‘economic development’ is proving to be more hazardous for human health, which has been discussed below.

Reasons to Save Environment to Save Life on Earth

Following are the points describing pollution due to Misuse and Wastage of natural resources and their effects on life of living beings on the earth, thus we must save our environment to save life on earth:

  • Air Pollution: The increase in the use of petrol and diesel for transportation and the burning of fossil fuels in industries to produce energy make a terrible contribution in polluting the air. This results in an increase in the levels of sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, chloro-fluoro-carbons, carbon monoxide, etc. These hazardous gases negatively affect human health causing chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and various other respiratory diseases. Also, causing the depletion of ozone layer, making mankind vulnerable to ultraviolet rays, air pollution not only accelerates ‘global warming’ but also weakens the immune system.
  • Water Pollution: The suspension of water soluble inorganic chemicals from industries, release of untreated human and animal wastes in fresh water and draining of fertilizers and pesticides during irrigation in rivers lead to water pollution. This not only makes the water unfit for drinking, such that its consumption causes gastro-intestinal diseases but also causes cancer. Moreover, by affecting the aquatic life negatively, water pollution makes fish unfit for consumption.
  • Soil Pollution: Use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in soil not only kills’ bad but also good pests, thereby providing us with less nutritious crops. Also, the exposure to chemical infected crops due to soil pollution over several years causes mutations, produces cancer, etc. Soil erosion caused due to excessive deforestation and construction aids in the frequency of floods, which results in the destruction of human life on a massive scale.
  • Noise Pollution: Excessive noise emanating from factories and vehicles can cause physical damage to the ear, resulting in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Amongst Homo sapiens, noise pollution also has negative effect on mental, emotional and psychological health, causing stress, anxiety and irritability, thereby adversely affecting the performance at work.

Methods for Saving the Environment

Pondering over the pages of history, it can be observed that our ancestors were more concerned about saving our environment, than we are today. This can be witnessed in the contributions of Sunderlal Bahuguna, who through Chipko Movement guarded the forest resources. Similarly, Medha Patkar effectively saved the environment of the tribal people, which was negatively impacted due to the construction of dams on the Narmada River. We as the youth of today can take small steps, to similarly save our natural environment:

  • We should promote and also apply to the concept of 3R’s, i.e. reduce, recycle and reuse in order to prevent the excessive use of non-renewable resources. For instance, metal scrap can be used to make new metal products.
  • Use energy efficient tube lights and bulbs that save energy.
  • Reduce the use of paper and wood products wherever possible and go for e-book and e-paper.
  • Reduce the use of fossil fuels by opting to walk or using car pool or public transport.
  • Use jute/cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
  • Use rechargeable batteries/ solar panels.
  • Setting up compost bin to produce manure to reduce the use of fertilizers.

Though government has formulated various schemes and established laws in favour of saving both nature and wildlife. It is still the duty of each person individually to protect the environment for our future generations, as we are the people consuming its benefits. This can be very appropriately connoted in the words of Lester Brown, “We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers: we have borrowed it from our children”.

Essay on Save Environment Day

The environment is the surrounding area of our dwelling. It plays a crucial role in our survival and existence. It is in the "environment" where a living thing has its chances of birth, growth, development, and life itself. The cues present in that environment gradually shape their survivability and habitation.

Right from a small age, we are being educated on how to save our environment and help this planet earth to be beautiful. The environment plays a crucial role in shaping the psychological condition and physical provision of a living creature. Over time, it gets to shape living things. Planet earth with loads of environmental issues will have a greater impact in future.

Therefore, it is vitally important to save the environment, since; the very existence of a favorable environment determines the chances for the survivability and development of life within its boundaries.

What is the Environment?

The environment is the area or region which supports certain conditions that enable and benefit the dynamic aspects of its inhabiting forms of life which leads to formation, development, maturity, birth, decay, and death.

What Forms the Environment?

The necessities involved and responsible for the formation of an environment is its conducive surrounding. The surrounding presents the proper cues to look for on which life can form and flourish.

A healthy environment depicts the abundance of suitable and appropriate cues that support the edification of life. Surroundings form the basis of the environment.

How does an Environment influences Life?

The natural environment consists of climate and nature, both of which can affect health. Climate depicts the natural weather conditions which influence nature. Natural environments ensure harmony in Nature.

A poor environment can reduce the lifespan of all creatures – humans and animals alike. It can seriously affect their psychological and physical conditions, that too, in a negative way.

In recent years, there have been many natural disasters or calamities giving out negative outcomes. Wildfires, earthquakes, floods, famine, and other issues are becoming very common.

The Effects of Pollution on Wildlife and Marine Life

Pollution has adverse effects on the natural environment along with its flora and fauna. It alters the natural genetic code of the organisms dwelling in its polluted surroundings. Pollution affects not just the food chain but, it ruins the entire food web. It endangers and is responsible for the extinction of living species.

Initiatives to Save the Environment

The plantation, restoration, and maintenance of green trees are vital to save the degenerating environment. Trees play a crucial role – not only to supply oxygen but also to consume carbon dioxide which is harmful to humans and animals. Deforestation should be discouraged at all costs.  The more we plant trees, the more our environment can be conserved.

Deforestation leads to a large deterioration in soil quality and causes landslides. Improved tree plantation causes afforestation that helps to strengthen the integrity of soil strength.  This helps to reduce soil erosion, landslides, and floods.

Pollution, of all sorts, is a major threat to the environment. Chemicals and pesticides can cause pollution to the same intensity as harmful gasses, smoke, or dust particles.

Another important initiative to follow for saving the environment is waste management. People should be educated about the proper disposal of waste in their house s , area, or city. Regularly cleaning of streets, managing garbage, and other aspects of waste management is important to consider

The environment refers to the natural surroundings and situations in which we exist. Regrettably, this habitat is now under significant jeopardy. This problem is almost entirely due to human actions. These human actions have unquestionably had a negative impact on the ecosystem. Most significantly, this catastrophe jeopardizes the existence of all living creatures on Earth. As a result, environmental protection is extremely important.

Environment-Friendly Strategies

First and foremost, there should be a strong emphasis on tree planting. A tree is, above all, a source of oxygen. As a result of the construction, several trees have been felled. The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere will surely decrease as a result of this. The greater the number of trees planted, the greater the amount of oxygen created. As a result, increasing the number of trees planted will improve people's quality of life.

People must also pay attention to forest conservation. Forests are extremely important to the environment. On the other side, deforestation reduces the size of forests all over the world. Government-led forest conservation activities are required. The government should make forest destruction a criminal offense.

Another important technique for environmental protection is soil conservation. In order to achieve this, landslides, floods, and soil erosion must all be controlled. To assist conserve the soil, afforestation and tree planting should be done. Terrace farming and the use of natural fertilizers are two other options.

The Advantages of Environmental Conservation

For starters, the global climate will remain normal. Pollution and environmental devastation have contributed to global warming. As a result, many humans and animals have died. As a result, environmental preservation will aid in the prevention of global warming.

People's health would improve. As a result of pollution and deforestation, many people's health is worsening. Environmental conservation will surely help people's health. Most importantly, preserving the environment will minimize the prevalence of numerous diseases.

If the environment is rescued, animals will surely be safeguarded. Many species will not become extinct as a result of environmental preservation. The population of many endangered animals would likewise increase.

The water level would rise as a result. Groundwater levels have been substantially lowered due to environmental damage. Additionally, clean drinking water is in low supply all throughout the world. As a result, a large number of people grew sick and perished. Such issues could be avoided by conserving the environment.

To summarize, the environment is a priceless treasure in this world. Our environment is in grave jeopardy. The necessity to save the environment is urgent. Without a doubt, it is Humanity's most serious concern right now. Any delay could be detrimental in this regard.

Therefore, we can see that the environment plays a far more important factor in shaping life than we can imagine. It is responsible not only for physical well-being but can impact the psychological factors of its constituents as well. Promoting a healthy and clean environment is the basic need of any individual living on this planet earth. Living a healthy environment can help our coming generation to live a healthy life.

People that are working in pollution control centers or at places where pollution or toxicity levels are high. We as humans have a greater responsibility to save our environment. Controlling population, following waste management, and following other aspects of environmental issues. The Government of India and even globally is doing its best to assist citizens to have a friendly environment. Providing waste management assistance, cleaning streets, garbage and lakes are some of the assistance offered to have a better life.

4. Why should one we deforestation?

We all know trees are an important part of human life. They provide us oxygen and take in the carbon dioxide we exhale. If we start cutting down the trees the lack of oxygen will result in various respiratory-related illnesses and diseases. Along with the deficiency of oxygen, the fresh air will get finished and global warming can increase. It is important to plant twice the amount of trees that are cut. Trees are very important as they provide a home to birds and animals. Hence one should stop deforestation.

We need to protect them in order to protect our lives. This is so because man and all living organisms depend on the earth for their survival.

It is The Need of the Hour

To say that saving the earth is the need of the hour would be an understatement. All the activities of humans driven by greed and selfishness have caused immense damage to the earth. It is degraded it beyond repair. Almost all the natural resources are now polluted due to these activities.

When all these resources will be under threat, naturally lives of all living organisms will be under peril. This is why we need to save the earth at all costs. All the other issues are secondary and saving the earth is the main concern. For when the earth will not remain, the other issues will go away automatically.

Earth is the only planet which can sustain life on it. We do not have a planet B which we can move onto. This makes it all the more serious to save the earth and save our lives. If we do not take strict actions now, we will lose the chance of seeing our future generations flourish forever. Everyone must come together for the same causes, as we are inhabitants of this planet firstly and then anything else.

Furthermore, we can start by planting more trees to make up for the deforestation that is happening these days at a rapid rate. When we plant more trees, ecological balance can be restored and we can improve the quality of life.

Similarly, we must stop wasting water. When done on individual levels, this will create a huge impact on conserving water. We must not pollute our water bodies by dumping waste in it. It is essential to save water most importantly as it is running out rapidly.

In short, the government and individuals must come together to save the earth. We can make people aware of the consequences of not saving the earth. They can be taught ways and how they can contribute to saving the earth. If all this collective effort starts happening, we can surely save our planet earth and make brighter earth.

Essay on Save Environment | For Students

Our environment is like a delicate ecosystem, where everything is connected, and each part plays a vital role. In this essay, we will discuss the importance of saving the environment, the threats it faces, and the actions we can take to protect it for ourselves and future generations.

The Beauty of Nature

Nature is a masterpiece of art, with breathtaking landscapes, colorful flowers, and diverse wildlife. From lush forests to sparkling rivers and towering mountains, our environment is a source of wonder and inspiration. It is our duty to preserve this natural beauty for generations to come.

The Web of Life

Our environment is a web of life where every living thing, from tiny insects to mighty elephants, has a role to play. For instance, bees pollinate flowers, ensuring the growth of fruits and vegetables that we rely on for food. When we harm the environment, we disrupt this delicate balance.

Clean Air and Water

Clean air and water are essential for our survival. Trees, often called the lungs of the Earth, provide us with oxygen, while rivers and lakes supply us with fresh water. Pollution from factories and vehicles can harm our air and water, making them unsafe for us and the creatures that depend on them.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variety of plant and animal species in an area. It’s like a tapestry of life, where each species adds its unique thread. Unfortunately, human activities like deforestation and habitat destruction are causing many species to disappear. This loss of biodiversity threatens the balance of our environment. Climate Change

One of the most significant threats to our environment is climate change. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This gas acts like a blanket, trapping heat and causing temperatures to rise. This leads to more frequent and severe weather events, like hurricanes and wildfires.

It comes in many forms, from plastic waste in the oceans to toxic chemicals in the soil. Pollution not only harms wildlife but also affects our health. For example, when we litter, it can end up in rivers, harming aquatic life and contaminating our drinking water.

Conservation Efforts

Many people and organizations are working hard to save the environment. National parks and wildlife reserves are set up to protect natural habitats. Conservationists and scientists conduct research to better understand and protect endangered species. It’s heartening to know that people are committed to preserving our environment.

Individual Actions

While big conservation efforts are essential, individual actions also make a significant impact. We can reduce our carbon footprint by using energy-efficient appliances and vehicles. Recycling and reducing waste can help reduce pollution. Planting trees in our communities can contribute to cleaner air.

Education and Awareness

Education plays a crucial role in saving the environment. When we learn about the importance of our environment and the threats it faces, we become more aware of our actions. Schools, museums, and community programs can help spread awareness and inspire action.

Conclusion of Essay on Save Environment

In conclusion, the environment is our responsibility, and its preservation is vital for our well-being and the well-being of all living creatures on Earth. We must appreciate the beauty of nature, understand the interconnectedness of all life, and take action to combat threats like pollution and climate change. By working together, we can ensure that our environment thrives, providing clean air, water, and a rich tapestry of biodiversity for generations to come. Saving the environment is not just a choice; it’s a necessity.

Earth ’s natural resources include air , water , soil , minerals , fuels , plants, and animals. Conservation is the practice of caring for these resources so all living things can benefit from them now and in the future. All the things we need to survive , such as food , water, air, and shelter , come from natural resources. Some of these resources, like small plants, can be replaced quickly after they are used. Others, like large trees, take a long time to replace. These are renewable resources . Other resources, such as fossil fuels , cannot be replaced at all. Once they are used up, they are gone f orever . These are nonrenewable resources . People often waste natural resources. Animals are overhunted . Forests are cleared, exposing land to wind and water damage. Fertile soil is exhausted and lost to erosion because of poor farming practices. Fuel supplies are depleted . Water and air are polluted . If resources are carelessly managed, many will be used up. If used wisely and efficiently , however, renewable resources will last much longer. Through conservation, people can reduce waste and manage natural resources wisely. The population of human beings has grown enormously in the past two centuries. Billions of people use up resources quickly as they eat food, build houses, produce goods, and burn fuel for transportation and electricity . The continuation of life as we know it depends on the careful use of natural resources. The need to conserve resources often conflicts with other needs. For some people, a wooded area may be a good place to put a farm. A timber company may want to harvest the area’s trees for construction materials. A business may want to build a factory or shopping mall on the land. All these needs are valid, but sometimes the plants and animals that live in the area are forgotten. The benefits of development need to be weighed against the harm to animals that may be forced to find new habitats , the depletion of resources we may want in the future (such as water or timber), or damage to resources we use today. Development and conservation can coexist in harmony. When we use the environment in ways that ensure we have resources for the future, it is called sustainable development . There are many different resources we need to conserve in order to live sustainably. Forests A forest is a large area covered with trees grouped so their foliage shades the ground. Every continent except Antarctica has forests, from the evergreen -filled boreal forests of the north to mangrove forests in tropical wetlands . Forests are home to more than two-thirds of all known land species . Tropical rainforests are especially rich in biodiversity . Forests provide habitats for animals and plants. They store carbon , helping reduce global warming . They protect soil by reducing runoff . They add nutrients to the soil through leaf litter . They provide people with lumber and firewood. Deforestation is the process of clearing away forests by cutting them down or burning them. People clear forests to use the wood, or to make way for farming or development. Each year, Earth loses about 14.6 million hectares (36 million acres) of forest to deforestation—an area about the size of the U.S. state of New York. Deforestation destroys wildlife habitats and increases soil erosion. It also releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere , contributing to global warming. Deforestation accounts for 15 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Deforestation also harms the people who rely on forests for their survival, hunting and gathering, harvesting forest products, or using the timber for firewood. About half of all the forests on Earth are in the tropics —an area that circles the globe near the Equator . Although tropical forests cover fewer than 6 percent of the world’s land area, they are home to about 80 percent of the world’s documented species. For example, more than 500 different species of trees live in the forests on the small U.S. island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. Tropical forests give us many valuable products, including woods like mahogany and teak , rubber , fruits, nuts, and flowers. Many of the medicines we use today come from plants found only in tropical rainforests. These include quinine , a malaria drug; curare , an anesthetic used in surgery; and rosy periwinkle , which is used to treat certain types of cancer . Sustainable forestry practices are critical for ensuring we have these resources well into the future. One of these practices is leaving some trees to die and decay naturally in the forest. This “ deadwood ” builds up soil. Other sustainable forestry methods include using low-impact logging practices, harvesting with natural regeneration in mind, and avoiding certain logging techniques , such as removing all the high-value trees or all the largest trees from a forest. Trees can also be conserved if consumers recycle . People in China and Mexico, for example, reuse much of their wastepaper, including writing paper, wrapping paper, and cardboard. If half the world’s paper were recycled, much of the worldwide demand for new paper would be fulfilled, saving many of Earth’s trees. We can also replace some wood products with alternatives like bamboo , which is actually a type of grass. Soil Soil is vital to food production. We need high-quality soil to grow the crops that we eat and feed to livestock . Soil is also important to plants that grow in the wild. Many other types of conservation efforts, such as plant conservation and animal conservation, depend on soil conservation. Poor farming methods, such as repeatedly planting the same crop in the same place, called monoculture , deplete nutrients in the soil. Soil erosion by water and wind increases when farmers plow up and down hills. One soil conservation method is called contour strip cropping . Several crops, such as corn, wheat, and clover , are planted in alternating strips across a slope or across the path of the prevailing wind . Different crops, with different root systems and leaves, help slow erosion.

Harvesting all the trees from a large area, a practice called clearcutting , increases the chances of losing productive topsoil to wind and water erosion. Selective harvesting —the practice of removing individual trees or small groups of trees—leaves other trees standing to anchor the soil. Biodiversity Biodiversity is the variety of living things that populate Earth. The products and benefits we get from nature rely on biodiversity. We need a rich mixture of living things to provide foods, building materials, and medicines, as well as to maintain a clean and healthy landscape . When a species becomes extinct , it is lost to the world forever. Scientists estimate that the current rate of extinction is 1,000 times the natural rate. Through hunting, pollution , habitat destruction, and contribution to global warming, people are speeding up the loss of biodiversity at an alarming rate. It’s hard to know how many species are going extinct because the total number of species is unknown. Scientists discover thousands of new species every year. For example, after looking at just 19 trees in Panama, scientists found 1,200 different species of beetles—80 percent of them unknown to science at the time. Based on various estimates of the number of species on Earth, we could be losing anywhere from 200 to 100,000 species each year. We need to protect biodiversity to ensure we have plentiful and varied food sources. This is true even if we don’t eat a species threatened with extinction because something we do eat may depend on that species for survival. Some predators are useful for keeping the populations of other animals at manageable levels. The extinction of a major predator might mean there are more herbivores looking for food in people’s gardens and farms. Biodiversity is important for more than just food. For instance, we use between 50,000 to 70,000 plant species for medicines worldwide. The Great Barrier Reef , a coral reef off the coast of northeastern Australia, contributes about $6 billion to the nation’s economy through commercial fishing , tourism , and other recreational activities. If the coral reef dies, many of the fish, shellfish , marine mammals , and plants will die, too. Some governments have established parks and preserves to protect wildlife and their habitats. They are also working to abolish hunting and fishing practices that may cause the extinction of some species. Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are fuels produced from the remains of ancient plants and animals. They include coal , petroleum (oil), and natural gas . People rely on fossil fuels to power vehicles like cars and airplanes, to produce electricity, and to cook and provide heat. In addition, many of the products we use today are made from petroleum. These include plastics , synthetic rubber, fabrics like nylon , medicines, cosmetics , waxes, cleaning products, medical devices, and even bubblegum.

Fossil fuels formed over millions of years. Once we use them up, we cannot replace them. Fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource. We need to conserve fossil fuels so we don’t run out. However, there are other good reasons to limit our fossil fuel use. These fuels pollute the air when they are burned. Burning fossil fuels also releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Global warming is changing ecosystems . The oceans are becoming warmer and more acidic , which threatens sea life. Sea levels are rising, posing risks to coastal communities. Many areas are experiencing more droughts , while others suffer from flooding . Scientists are exploring alternatives to fossil fuels. They are trying to produce renewable biofuels to power cars and trucks. They are looking to produce electricity using the sun, wind, water, and geothermal energy — Earth’s natural heat. Everyone can help conserve fossil fuels by using them carefully. Turn off lights and other electronics when you are not using them. Purchase energy-efficient appliances and weatherproof your home. Walk, ride a bike, carpool , and use public transportation whenever possible. Minerals Earth’s supply of raw mineral resources is in danger. Many mineral deposits that have been located and mapped have been depleted. As the ores for minerals like aluminum and iron become harder to find and extract , their prices skyrocket . This makes tools and machinery more expensive to purchase and operate. Many mining methods, such as mountaintop removal mining (MTR) , devastate the environment. They destroy soil, plants, and animal habitats. Many mining methods also pollute water and air, as toxic chemicals leak into the surrounding ecosystem. Conservation efforts in areas like Chile and the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States often promote more sustainable mining methods. Less wasteful mining methods and the recycling of materials will help conserve mineral resources. In Japan, for example, car manufacturers recycle many raw materials used in making automobiles. In the United States, nearly one-third of the iron produced comes from recycled automobiles. Electronic devices present a big problem for conservation because technology changes so quickly. For example, consumers typically replace their cell phones every 18 months. Computers, televisions, and mp3 players are other products contributing to “ e-waste .” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that Americans generated more than three million tons of e-waste in 2007. Electronic products contain minerals as well as petroleum-based plastics. Many of them also contain hazardous materials that can leach out of landfills into the soil and water supply. Many governments are passing laws requiring manufacturers to recycle used electronics. Recycling not only keeps materials out of landfills, but it also reduces the energy used to produce new products. For instance, recycling aluminum saves 90 percent of the energy that would be required to mine new aluminum.

Water Water is a renewable resource. We will not run out of water the way we might run out of fossil fuels. The amount of water on Earth always remains the same. However, most of the planet’s water is unavailable for human use. While more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is freshwater . Out of that freshwater, almost 70 percent is permanently frozen in the ice caps covering Antarctica and Greenland. Only about 1 percent of the freshwater on Earth is available for people to use for drinking, bathing, and irrigating crops. People in many regions of the world suffer water shortages . These are caused by depletion of underground water sources known as aquifers , a lack of rainfall due to drought, or pollution of water supplies. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.6 billion people lack adequate water sanitation . More than five million people die each year from diseases caused by using polluted water for drinking, cooking, or washing. About one-third of Earth’s population lives in areas that are experiencing water stress . Most of these areas are in developing countries. Polluted water hurts the environment as well as people. For instance, agricultural runoff—the water that runs off of farmland—can contain fertilizers and pesticides . When this water gets into streams , rivers , and oceans, it can harm the organisms that live in or drink from those water sources. People can conserve and protect water supplies in many ways. Individuals can limit water use by fixing leaky faucets, taking shorter showers, planting drought-resistant plants, and buying low-water-use appliances. Governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations can help developing countries build sanitation facilities. Farmers can change some of their practices to reduce polluted runoff. This includes limiting overgrazing , avoiding over-irrigation, and using alternatives to chemical pesticides whenever possible. Conservation Groups Businesses, international organizations , and some governments are involved in conservation efforts. The United Nations (UN) encourages the creation of national parks around the world. The UN also established World Water Day, an event to raise awareness and promote water conservation. Governments enact laws defining how land should be used and which areas should be set aside as parks and wildlife preserves. Governments also enforce laws designed to protect the environment from pollution, such as requiring factories to install pollution-control devices. Finally, governments often provide incentives for conserving resources, using clean technologies, and recycling used goods. Many international organizations are dedicated to conservation. Members support causes such as saving rain forests, protecting threatened animals, and cleaning up the air. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an alliance of governments and private groups founded in 1948. The IUCN works to protect wildlife and habitats. In 1980, the group proposed a world conservation strategy . Many governments have used the IUCN model to develop their own conservation plans. In addition, the IUCN monitors the status of endangered wildlife, threatened national parks and preserves, and other environments around the world. Zoos and botanical gardens also work to protect wildlife. Many zoos raise and breed endangered animals to increase their populations. They conduct research and help educate the public about endangered species . For instance, the San Diego Zoo in the U.S. state of California runs a variety of research programs on topics ranging from disease control in amphibians to heart-healthy diets for gorillas. Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, England, work to protect plant life around the world. Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank , for example, works with partners in 54 countries to protect biodiversity through seed collection. Kew researchers are also exploring how DNA technology can help restore damaged habitats. Individuals can do many things to help conserve resources. Riding bikes, walking, carpooling, and using public transportation all help conserve fuel and reduce the amount of pollutants released into the environment. Individuals can plant trees to create homes for birds and squirrels. At grocery stores, people can bring their own reusable bags. And people can carry reusable water bottles and coffee mugs rather than using disposable containers. If each of us would conserve in small ways, the result would be a major conservation effort.

Tree Huggers The Chipko Movement, which is dedicated to saving trees, was started by villagers in Uttar Pradesh, India. Chipko means hold fast or embrace. The villagers flung their arms around trees to keep loggers from cutting them down. The villagers won, and Uttar Pradesh banned the felling of trees in the Himalayan foothills. The movement has since expanded to other parts of India.

Thirsty Food People require about 2 to 4 liters of drinking water each day. However, a day's worth of food requires 2,000 to 5,000 liters of water to produce. It takes more water to produce meat than to produce plant-based foods.

Tiger, Tiger Tigers are dangerous animals, but they have more to fear from us than we have to fear from them. Today there are only about 3,200 tigers living in the wild. Three tiger subspecies the Bali, Caspian, and Javan tigers have gone extinct in the past century. Many organizations are working hard to protect the remaining tigers from illegal hunting and habitat loss.

By using less fuel, we can lower our carbon footprint and contribute to mitigating these adverse effects on our environment.

Furthermore, saving fuel can also lead to cleaner air quality. The combustion of fossil fuels releases pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These pollutants contribute to air pollution, which can have detrimental effects on human health, causing respiratory problems, allergies, and even premature death. By conserving fuel, we decrease the emission of these harmful pollutants and promote cleaner air for everyone.

Another important aspect of saving fuel is the preservation of natural resources. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources that take millions of years to form. Once they are depleted, they are lost forever. By reducing our fuel consumption, we ensure the longevity of these valuable resources for future generations. In addition, by saving fuel, we also reduce the need for drilling, mining, and extraction activities, which often have severe environmental impacts such as deforestation, habitat destruction, and water pollution.

Moreover, saving fuel goes hand in hand with adopting sustainable transportation options. For instance, choosing public transportation, carpooling, or cycling not only reduces fuel consumption but also promotes a healthier lifestyle. These alternatives not only help save fuel but also reduce congestion on the roads, leading to improved traffic flow and reduced commute times. Additionally, sustainable transportation options contribute to better physical health by encouraging regular exercise and reducing sedentary habits.

In addition to transportation, saving fuel also relates to energy conservation in other sectors. The industrial sector is a major consumer of fossil fuels, using them for manufacturing, production, and electricity generation. By promoting energy-efficient practices and technologies, industries can significantly reduce their fuel consumption and minimize their environmental impact. This can be achieved through measures such as using renewable sources of energy, upgrading machinery, and optimizing energy use.

Furthermore, saving fuel can also have a positive impact on individual finances. Fuel prices have been rising steadily over the years, putting a strain on household budgets. By adopting fuel-saving practices, individuals can reduce their fuel expenses, leaving more money for other essential needs. Moreover, saving fuel can also lead to decreased maintenance costs, as regular maintenance and proper usage of vehicles can extend their lifespan and reduce the need for repairs.

In conclusion, saving fuel is crucial for a better environment. By reducing fuel consumption, we can decrease harmful emissions, improve air quality, preserve natural resources, promote sustainable transportation options, and even save money. As individuals, communities, and societies at large, it is our responsibility to adopt fuel-saving practices and initiate positive changes towards a sustainable future. By doing so, we not only protect our environment but also ensure a better quality of life for present and future generations.

At 11,500 Feet, a ‘Climate Fast’ to Save the Melting Himalaya

Sonam Wangchuk has long worked to help people in India’s Ladakh region adapt to climate change. In an e360 interview, he explains why he fasted for 21 days to pressure the government to grant legal protections to the region’s fragile ecosystem and its life-giving glaciers.

By Jonathan Mingle • March 28, 2024

This month, Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk conducted a 21-day “climate fast” in his native Ladakh in the Himalaya. He had two objectives: to call the world’s attention to the rapid meltdown of the planet’s “third pole” and to pressure India’s government to grant Ladakhis the power to legally protect the region’s resources.

For centuries, Ladakhis have survived and thrived in the “rain shadow” of the Himalaya, where the only water comes from melting snow and ice. But in recent decades, they have witnessed rapid glacier loss, increasingly erratic snowfall, and disasters caused by unprecedented cloudbursts and glacial lake floods.

An educator and an engineer, Wangchuk has pioneered the construction of passive solar-heated buildings throughout the region, as well as “ ice stupas ,” in which meltwater is refrozen for later irrigation use. But he is painfully aware such efforts can’t solve the bigger problem, which is why he has become one of India’s most prominent voices for climate action.

For three weeks, Wangchuk, whom Yale Environment 360 interviewed on day 19 of his fast, consumed only water and salt and slept outdoors at 11,500 feet in subfreezing temperatures. Thousands joined him in their own day-long fasts and in mass protests in the Ladakhi capital to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to designate Ladakh as a “tribal area” under a provision of India’s constitution, which would guarantee local autonomy over land use and resource management. Entrusting Ladakhis with this authority, says Wangchuk, is the only way to protect this fragile, cold-desert ecosystem and Ladakhis’ way of life.

“In Ladakh, we are in a very important position to be messengers from the frontier,” he says. “We have a responsibility… to tell the world what’s happening with us today, and that tomorrow it will be happening to you.”

Yale Environment 360: You are now on day 19 of your 21-day fast. How are you feeling?

Sonam Wangchuk: Last two days, I was feeling very weak. Today I was feeling much better.

e360: How would the legal safeguards you are seeking — such as having your own legislative autonomous district councils — help protect the glaciers of the Himalayas and the ecosystems and communities that rely on them?

Wangchuk : There is a special provision in the Indian constitution called the Sixth Schedule, which gives safeguards to regions where tribal communities are the majority, to the people and their cultures, so that they can determine how these places should be developed without interference from others.

What we are demanding — and what the government had promised — is the provision of autonomy to the Indigenous Ladakhi people. The Sixth Schedule provides for the formation of autonomous district councils that have legislative powers; they can make rules and regulations governing land, forest, water, agriculture, health, sanitation, mining, and more. But after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won in the elections, it backtracked on those promises.

“Over my lifetime, I have seen glaciers vanish. Glaciers that used to be right next to roads have retreated hundreds of meters.”

e360: In the absence of these protections, what future forms of industrial development by outside interests are people in Ladakh worried about? Are there specific proposed projects that concern you the most?

Wangchuk: Without these protections, Ladakhis themselves could be completely excluded from decision-making around land use in their own land. Outsiders will be able to come in with huge mining, energy, industrial projects, and we will have no say in the matter. There will be no local input, no limits on how these big projects are decided and built.

If Ladakh is left open to this kind of free-for-all, with no safeguards, mining companies will surely come. We hear reports that they are already scouting in the mountains and valleys. Huge hotel chains are also eager to come here. There simply won’t be enough water in our high-altitude desert to support these new demands. Every drop here is important. The tourism industry has already caused a lot of havoc in terms of pollution and water use. What people fear is that without these protections our culture and our way of life — which has been finely tuned over thousands of years to survive in these mountains, in balance with the resources and the environment — we won’t be able to sustain it.

And then there will be more and bigger roads to serve all of this new development, with more diesel trucks and vehicles plying them. All of this activity will lead to more local emissions of black carbon — soot — and we know that this will make the glaciers disappear even faster. Because when the soot falls on the snow and ice, it absorbs solar energy, heating them and speeding up their melting.

e360: Ladakh lies in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, where virtually the entire water supply comes from snow and ice. How worried are Ladakhis about their future ability to continue to farm and live in the region if these warming and glacial-loss trends continue?

Wangchuk: Over my lifetime, I have seen glaciers vanish here in Ladakh. Glaciers that used to be right next to the roads have now retreated hundreds of meters. These changes have led to flash floods in some places, drought in other places. We are already facing water shortages in some areas. If new industries come in, with their own demands for water and with pollution, not only will the local people suffer, but all of North India will suffer. That’s why we consider it so important to preserve these glaciers. When the glaciers disappear, the local people in Ladakh will become refugees, because they’re our lifeline.

But this does not only affect us in Ladakh. Ladakh and its glacier system is [part of what is] known as the “third pole” of the planet. It’s the largest reservoir of fresh water outside of the poles, feeding one fourth of the planet’s population, directly or indirectly. It’s not just Ladakh’s problem. It’s everybody’s problem.

“My appeal always to people out there is, please live simply in your big cities, so we in the mountains may simply live.”

e360 : Have you been encouraged by the response to your fast from other parts of India?

Wangchuk: Yes. I have been highlighting these issues and educating people in India — while also reminding the government of the promises they have made — through my morning and evening updates [on social media] throughout the fast. Many people from northern India especially, the Himalayan foothills, and the rest of India have been moved and have expressed solidarity with us. Definitely there’s a big change. Some have even organized one-day fasts in their own cities. Last Sunday it was 25 cities around India. That’s an indication of how much they are moved, and they are in support. People have come from Darjeeling, Uttarakhand, all the Himalayan foothills, and many other places.

e360: Whether or not the government responds to your demands, what do you think your fast and the related protests have already achieved?

Wangchuk: What I think we have achieved is educating the nation around the reasons for the fast. But rather than keeping it as just something we gain for our cause, I have been trying to educate them about how the glaciers are melting, how corporations are unsustainably exploiting the mountains. It’s about education. That has definitely happened, even if the [political] demands are not met.

Lots of networks and connections are being made, and the government takes it seriously —although they are trying to avoid it for now. But sooner or later I think they’ll have to pay attention. Because it’s making a dent in their votes.

e360: The United States and other wealthy nations bear most of the historical responsibility for fossil fuel emissions driving the melting of Himalayan glaciers. Given that fact, is your fast intended to speak to people beyond the borders of India too?

Wangchuk: Yes, my climate fast is just as much to educate the big cities of the world, where most of this problem starts, and the historically responsible nations. But I must say, I’m not one of those who blames the rich historical emitters and then takes a concession for the developing world to emit more, “because now it’s our share, why shouldn’t we emit as you have already?” I don’t believe in that. Something that is poisonous and harmful to the planet — the sooner we learn and act, the better.

We don’t have to repeat the mistakes made by previous powers. We have to set things right in our own individual capacities. We can’t be doing the same, or else there will be no difference between us who claim we understand the issues of environment and those who didn’t know at the time and did what they thought was right. But, yes, the big emitters have a big responsibility also, and I want to connect to them in the U.S. and Europe and other countries to appeal directly to the people.

e360: Do you have a message to people in the United States and other industrialized countries about their role in helping protect the Himalaya?

Wangchuk: To make their lifestyles simpler. To switch from carbon-intensive lifestyles to greener lifestyles, because it harms the planet and themselves, later. But much sooner we Ladakhis — for no fault of ours — will become victims of their acts. So, my appeal always to people out there is, please live simply in your big cities, so we in the mountains may simply live. I want to influence people beyond the borders of India, because emissions don’t know any boundaries, and pollution doesn’t know any boundaries. And because education is the best defense.

The Earth Will Feast on Dead Cicadas

Photo of a periodical cicada

Brace yourselves, Illinoisans: A truly shocking number of cicadas are about to live, make sweet love, and die in a tree near you. Two broods of periodical cicadas—Brood XIX on a 13-year cycle and Brood XIII on a 17-year cycle—are slated to emerge together in central Illinois this summer for the first time in over two centuries. To most humans, they’re an ephemeral spectacle and an ear-splitting nuisance, and then they’re gone. To many other Midwestern animals, plants, and microbes, they’re a rare feast, bringing new life to forests long past their death.

From Nebraska to New York, 15 broods of periodical cicadas grow underground, quietly sipping watery sap from tree roots. After 13 or 17 years (depending on the brood), countless inch-long adults dig themselves out in sync, crawling out of the ground en masse for a monthlong summer orgy. After mating, they lay eggs in forest trees and die, leaving their tree-born babies to fall to the forest floor and begin the cycle anew. Cicadas don’t fly far from their birthplace, so each brood occupies a distinct patch of the US. “They form a mosaic on the landscape,” says Chris Simon, senior research scientist in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Connecticut.

Most years, at least one of these 15 broods emerges (annual cicadas, not to be confused with their smaller periodical cousins, pop up separately every summer). Sometimes two broods emerge at the same time. It’s also not unheard of for multiple broods to coexist in the same place. “What’s unusual is that these two broods are adjacent,” says John Lill, insect ecologist at George Washington University. “Illinois is going to be ground zero. From the very top to the very bottom of the state, it’s going to be covered in cicadas.” The last time that these broods swarmed aboveground together, Thomas Jefferson was president and the city of Chicago had yet to exist.

Entomologists around the world already have their flights booked for May. “We’re like cicada groupies,” Lill says. He promises that this once-in-a-generation spectacle will be even better than April’s total solar eclipse . During 2004’s Brood X emergence, Lill remembers walking outside at midnight. “For two seconds, I was like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know it was raining,’ because I saw water flowing down the street. As my eyes focused, I realized it was literally just thousands of cicadas crawling across the street.”

Some cicada devotees, like author and entomologist Greg Kritsky, have already witnessed Brood XIII emerge a couple of times. But for most of their predators, a brood emergence happens once in a lifetime, and it’s always an extremely pleasant surprise. “It’s a food bonanza,” Kritsky says, “like if you walked outside and found the whole world swarming with flying Hershey’s Kisses.”

Cicadas are shockingly chill, protein-packed, and taste like high-end shrimp —easy, delicious prey. “Periodical cicadas are sitting ducks,” says Lill. They don’t bite, sting, or poison anyone, and they’re totally unbothered by being handled. Dogs, raccoons, birds, and other generalist predators will gorge themselves on this flying feast until they’re stuffed, and it barely makes a dent in the cicada population. It’s their secret weapon, Lill says: In the absence of other defense mechanisms, “they just overwhelm predators by their sheer abundance.”

One Couple's Quest to Ditch Natural Gas

Kate O'Flaherty

Much like an unexpected free dinner will distract you from the leftovers sitting in your fridge, this summer’s cicada emergence will turn predators away from their usual prey. During the 2021 Brood X emergence , Zoe Getman-Pickering, a scientist in Lill’s research group, found that as birds swooped in on cicadas , caterpillar populations exploded. Spared from birds, caterpillars chomped on twice as many oak leaves as normal—and the chain of effects went on and on. Scientists can’t possibly study them all. “The ecosystem gets a swift kick, with this unexpected perturbation that changes a lot of things at once,” says Louie Yang, an ecologist and professor of entomology at UC Davis.

From birth to death, these insects shape the forest around them. As temperatures rise in late April, pale, red-eyed cicada nymphs begin clawing pinky-sized holes in the ground, preparing for their grand May entrance. All of these tunnels make it easier for rainwater to move through the soil, where it can then be used by plants and other dirt-inhabiting microbes. Once fully grown and aboveground, adult cicadas shed their exoskeletons, unfurl their wings, and fly off to spend their remaining four to six weeks on Earth singing (if they’re male), listening for the sexiest songs (if they’re female), and mating.

Mother cicadas use the metal-enhanced saws built into their abdomens—wood-drilling shafts layered with elements like aluminum, copper, and iron—to slice pockets into tree branches, where they’ll lay roughly 500 eggs each. Sometimes, all of these cuts cause twigs to wither or snap, killing leaves. While this could permanently damage a very young sapling, mature trees simply shed the slashed branches and carry on. “It’s like natural pruning,” Kritsky says, which keeps hearty trees strong, prevents disease, and promotes flower growth.

Once mating season winds down, so does the cicada’s life. “In late summer, everybody forgets about cicadas,” Lill says. “They all die. They all rot in the ground. And then they’re gone.” By late June, there will be millions of pounds of cicadas piling up at the base of trees, decomposing. The smell, Kritsky says, “is a sentient memory you will never forget—like rancid Limburger cheese.”

But these stinky carcasses send a massive pulse of food to scavengers in the soil. “The cicadas serve as reservoirs of nutrients,” Yang says. “When they come out, they release all this stored energy into the ecosystem,” giving their bodies back to the plants that raised them. In the short term, dead cicadas have a fertilizing effect, feeding microbes in the soil and helping plants grow larger. And as their remnants make their way into woodland ponds and streams, cicada nutrients are carried downstream, where they may strengthen aquatic ecosystems far beyond their home tree.

They may smell like bad hamburgers, but Yang says that if you’re lucky enough to host a tree full of cicadas this year, it’s best to just leave their bodies alone to decompose naturally. “They’ll be gone soon enough,” he says. If the pileup is especially obtrusive, simply sweep them out of the way and let nature do the rest.

The thought of billions of screeching insects in your backyard might make your skin crawl, but you don’t need to be a passive observer when they arrive. Researchers are clamoring for citizen scientists to send in photos of their local cicadas to help map the upcoming emergence. The Cicada Safari app, developed by Kritsky, received and verified 561,000 cicada pics during the 2021 Brood X emergence—he hopes to get even more this time around.

“This is an amazing natural phenomenon to wonder about,” Lill says, “not something to be afraid of.”

Biden-Harris Administration finalizes strongest-ever pollution standards for cars that position U.S. companies and workers to lead the clean vehicle future, protect public health, address the climate crisis, save drivers money

Final standards will expand consumer choice in clean vehicles and build on historic progress in U.S. auto manufacturing under President Biden’s Investing in America agenda

March 20, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, March 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced final national pollution standards for passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty vehicles for model years 2027 through 2032 and beyond. These standards will avoid more than 7 billion tons of carbon emissions and provide nearly $100 billion of annual net benefits to society, including $13 billion of annual public health benefits due to improved air quality, and $62 billion in reduced annual fuel costs, and maintenance and repair costs for drivers. The final standards deliver on the significant pollution reductions outlined in the proposed rule, while accelerating the adoption of cleaner vehicle technologies. EPA is finalizing this rule as sales of clean vehicles, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, hit record highs last year.

EPA projects an increase in U.S. auto manufacturing employment in response to these final standards, consistent with the broader Biden-Harris Administration commitment to create good-paying, union jobs leading the clean vehicle future. Strong standards have historically contributed to the U.S. leading the world in the supply of clean technologies, with corresponding benefits for American global competitiveness and domestic employment. Since President Biden took office, companies have announced more than $160 billion in investment in U.S. clean vehicle manufacturing and the U.S. auto manufacturing sector has added more than 100,000 jobs.

These standards will provide greater certainty for the auto industry, catalyzing private investment, creating good-paying union jobs, and invigorating and strengthening the U.S. auto industry. Over the next decade, the standards, paired with President Biden’s historic Investing in America agenda and investments in U.S. manufacturing, will set the U.S. auto sector on a trajectory for sustained growth. Additionally, the final standards will lower costs for consumers. Once fully phased in, the standards will save the average American driver an estimated $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance over the life of a vehicle.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan will join President Biden’s National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi today at an event in Washington, DC to announce the final standards and how they build on President Biden’s historic climate and economic record. The event will be livestreamed starting at noon EDT.

“With transportation as the largest source of U.S. climate emissions, these strongest-ever pollution standards for cars solidify America’s leadership in building a clean transportation future and creating good-paying American jobs, all while advancing President Biden’s historic climate agenda,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan . “The standards will slash over 7 billion tons of climate pollution, improve air quality in overburdened communities, and give drivers more clean vehicle choices while saving them money. Under President Biden’s leadership, this Administration is pairing strong standards with historic investments to revitalize domestic manufacturing, strengthen domestic supply chains and create good-paying jobs.”

“President Biden is investing in America, in our workers, and in the unions that built our middle class and established the U.S. auto sector as a leader in the world,” said President Biden’s National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi . “The President’s agenda is working. On factory floors across the nation, our autoworkers are making cars and trucks that give American drivers a choice – a way to get from point A to point B without having to fuel up at a gas station. From plug-in hybrids to fuel cells to fully electric, drivers have more choices today. Since 2021, sales of these vehicles have quadrupled and prices continue to come down. This growth means jobs, and it means we are moving faster and faster to take on the climate crisis – all thanks to the President’s leadership.”

Statement from United Automobile Workers : “The EPA has made significant progress on its final greenhouse gas emissions rule for light-duty vehicles. By taking seriously the concerns of workers and communities, the EPA has come a long way to create a more feasible emissions rule that protects workers building ICE vehicles, while providing a path forward for automakers to implement the full range of automotive technologies to reduce emissions.”

Light- and Medium-Duty Vehicle Final Standards

The final standards announced today, the “Multi Pollutant Emissions Standards for Model Years 2027 and Later Light-Duty and Medium-Duty Vehicles,” build on EPA’s existing emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2023 through 2026. The standards continue the technology-neutral and performance-based design of previous EPA standards for cars, pickups, and vans, and leverage advances in clean car technologies to further reduce both climate pollution and smog- and soot-forming emissions. EPA is finalizing the same standard proposed for MY 2032 while allowing additional time for the auto sector to scale up clean vehicle manufacturing supply chains in the first three years covered by the rule.

Annually, the net benefits to society for the light- and medium-duty final rule are estimated to be $99 billion. The final rule is expected to avoid 7.2 billion tons of CO2 emissions through 2055, roughly equal to four times the emissions of the entire transportation sector in 2021. It will also reduce fine particulate matter and ozone, preventing up to 2,500 premature deaths in 2055 as well as reducing heart attacks, respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, aggravated asthma, and decreased lung function.

EPA received extensive feedback on the proposed rule, including through written comments, testimony at public hearings, and other stakeholder engagements. The final standards were informed by the best available data in the public record and rigorous technical assessments. Like the proposal, EPA’s final rule gives manufacturers the flexibility to efficiently reduce emissions and meet the performance-based standards through the mix of technologies they decide is best for them and their customers. EPA’s analysis considers a broad suite of available emission control technologies, and projects that consumers will continue to have a wide range of vehicle choices under the final rule, including advanced gasoline vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and full battery electric vehicles.

Compared to the existing MY 2026 standards, the final MY 2032 standards represent a nearly 50% reduction in projected fleet average GHG emissions levels for light-duty vehicles and 44% reductions for medium-duty vehicles. In addition, the standards are expected to reduce emissions of health-harming fine particulate matter from gasoline-powered vehicles by over 95%. This will improve air quality nationwide and especially for people who live near major roadways and have environmental justice concerns.

Investing in America’s Clean Transportation Future

The final rule reflects the significant investments in clean vehicle technologies that industry is already making domestically and abroad, as well as ongoing U.S. market shifts and increasing consumer interest in clean vehicles. The Biden-Harris Administration is also directly supporting communities across America in moving towards a cleaner transportation future, including by building a national network of EV chargers and alternative-fuel stations; ensuring domestic manufacturers have the critical minerals and materials they need to make EV batteries; and funding clean transit and clean school buses, with priority for underserved communities. President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is focused on growing the American economy from the bottom up and the middle out – from rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure, to creating a manufacturing and innovation boom, to building a clean-energy economy that will combat climate change and make our communities more resilient.

Here's what leaders are saying about the final rule:

“I’ve always said Michigan automakers are the best in the world. And this is their moment,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI) . “I appreciate EPA’s commitment to engaging with our automakers and autoworkers to develop an ambitious but achievable final rule. It represents an opportunity for union workers to continue to build the vehicles of the future right here in the U.S. and tackle the climate crisis.”

“My priority will always be to protect American jobs and our environment, keep the United States at the forefront of automotive manufacturing, technology, and innovation, and keep our domestic industry strong and competitive,” said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) . “The EPA has worked with all stakeholders to reach this final rule that includes hybrid and electric vehicles, and ensure these goals are achievable. It’s important to protect vehicle choice – the number of available models has doubled in the last three years, and in the last year sticker prices are down 20%. We need to continue to work on making sure that these vehicles are affordable to everyone, that we have the infrastructure in place to make them accessible and practical for consumers, and bring jobs back to the U.S. The bottom line is that the future of the industry must be created in America and driven by American workers, and we are all committed to working together toward that future.”

“The future is electric. Automakers are committed to the EV transition – investing enormous amounts of capital and building cutting edge battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, traditional hybrids and fuel cell vehicles that drive efficiency and convert petroleum miles to electric miles,” said John Bozzella, President and CEO, Alliance for Automotive Innovation . “Consumers have tons of choices. But pace matters. Moderating the pace of EV adoption in 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 was the right call because it prioritizes more reasonable electrification targets in the next few (very critical) years of the EV transition. These adjusted EV targets – still a stretch goal – should give the market and supply chains a chance to catch up. It buys some time for more public charging to come online, and the industrial incentives and policies of the Inflation Reduction Act to do their thing. And the big one? The rules are mindful of the importance of choice to drivers and preserves their ability to choose the vehicle that’s right for them.”

“This is a day to celebrate American achievement. The step EPA is taking today will slash climate pollution and air pollution,” said Amanda Leland, Executive Director of Environmental Defense Fund . “It will bring more jobs for workers, more choices and more savings for consumers, and a healthier future for our children.
