Using Google Slides to Make Virtual Math Classes More Engaging

The popular tool helps teachers assess students’ thought processes and provides opportunities for students to work together to solve problems.

Many of us will be teaching remotely this fall due to the pandemic. How can we ensure that effective mathematics instruction and deep learning will still take place?

Using Google Slides is a simple yet versatile way to teach mathematics remotely. Google automatically saves each slide deck, the toolbar is user-friendly, and the decks can be shared (and saved) by students. Giving students access to the slide deck by sharing an editor’s version of the deck link is a necessary first step toward student collaboration.

Last spring, I used Google Slide decks to engage my sixth and seventh graders in intriguing and enjoyable online lessons that coincided with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ eight Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP), which promote mathematical thinking, understanding, and application:

SMP 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

SMP 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

SMP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

SMP 4: Model with mathematics.

SMP 5: Use appropriate tools strategically.

SMP 6:  Attend to precision.

SMP 7: Look for and make use of structure.

SMP 8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Here are five ways to teach mathematics online with Google Slides while promoting student collaboration and maintaining the integrity of effective mathematics instruction.

1. Observational Slides (SMP 3)

An observational slide may be used at any time during a lesson but is particularly useful as a warm-up to get students participating at the start of class. It can include a mathematical image and a question for students to consider. The students respond by typing a question or comment either in the chat section of your program, directly on the slide, or on the forthcoming slide.

This becomes a wonderful alternative to the “Which One Doesn’t Belong?” verbal math routine. A teacher can use this as an assessment of student thought. The activity may be extended by responding to the students’ comments or by asking a student to expound further on an observation or to question a comment written by a classmate. This slide design creates a level of equity within the lesson because every student has an opportunity to contribute.

2. Matching Slides (SMPs 3 and 8)

Another fun way to begin class is with a matching slide. Reimagining an activity from the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum  for grade six, I designed a slide with eight percentage prompts (e.g., “30 is 10% of what?”) on the left side of the slide, their movable solutions on the right, and a column in the center of the slide where students would place the solutions. I made four copies of the slide, paired up my students, and placed them into four breakout groups.

The expectations were for the students to discuss possible solutions, mentally calculate, and, if necessary, defend and decide upon the solutions. This activity required mathematical discourse between the students and collaboration, and students enjoyed the game-like discovery element.

3. Prompt Slides (SMP 3)

A teacher can place a question or fill-in-the-blank statement on a slide and invite students to post responses on that slide or the forthcoming slide. This activity creates a student-driven element in the lesson and provides a window into the thoughts of each student. Teachers can also invite students to post their own questions on the slide and encourage students to respond on another slide or verbally. Either way, this activity has the capability to change the course of a passive online-learning experience.

4. Equation Slides  (SMPs 1, 2, 4, 6)

Including an expression or equation slide is an obvious option for math instruction. Students answer on forthcoming slides or in the chat section of the remote-learning program. I used an equation slide to encourage my students to mentally calculate 1 percent of whole numbers after our discussion of how to do so with multiplication and division. This was a chance for students to use their conceptual knowledge to support their procedural knowledge, practice mental calculation precision, and learn from each other as student-generated solutions appeared on the screen.

5. Game Slides (SMPs 1, 5, 6)

Game slides are versatile because they can be used as game boards or scoreboards, and they practically guarantee lively math discourse. To end a session on probability, I created a slide on which I embedded an online spinner app and a score table so that my seventh graders could keep track of the number of times they spun particular colors on the spinner. This allowed me to observe the results in real time, as it provided a record of the data my students collected. They then used that data to answer questions about the game and probability of colors, actual results, and new predictions—all on an additional slide. This eliminated the need for a worksheet or alternative means of recording data; all of my students’ game results and answers to the questions were housed in the slide deck.

Using game slides is a pedagogical tool I learned from Dr. Theresa Wills, an online instruction expert at George Mason University. She regularly updates her popular YouTube channel for educators. She should be high on your list of online-learning professionals.

Google Slide lessons were new for my students, but they immediately adapted to them. Sometimes my lessons were entirely composed of collaborative slides. My students eventually were able to complete slide decks asynchronously: I assigned partners a set of slides to complete within a class deck (up to four slides) that I would later assess. I would design those lessons as 20- to 25-minute sessions to prevent student fatigue.

Although it initially seemed insurmountable, we now know that we can teach online in a way that excites students and stimulates them to learn. Want your students to perk up and speak out in your next online math session? Add a collaborative slide to your lesson, and watch them come alive.

Digital Math Resources in Google Classroom

math homework google slides

For the last 9 months, Maneuvering the Middle has worked to support teachers who have shifted to online or hybrid learning. To best serve teachers and students, we have created brand new digital math resources and shifted our paper-based activities to digital resources through Google Classroom. To learn more about these updates as well as some of our favorite online tools that make digital learning more engaging, keep reading.

Psst – Scroll down for an escape room activity freebie for your middle school students!

Digital Activities using Google Slides

Our digital activities are amazing! They are some of our most raved about resources. They are interactive, aligned to state standards, and can supplement an entire year of curriculum. I love that they come with self-grading Google Form exit tickets. You can read about them in more detail here ! Check out the video before to see 8th Grade Identifying Functions in action (You can find the entire 8th Grade Function Bundle here.)

UPDATE: ALGEBRA I DIGITAL ACTIVITIES ARE NOW AVAILABLE!

Update:  You can now get them individually . Looking for a very specific topic? Would you prefer to grab one or two before committing to the entire unit?

My 6th graders would love Graphing Coordinate Pairs or Solving One-Step Equations . These activities are great for end-of-year state testing review.

Desmos has really expanded many of its features since the pandemic. You can find our favorite Desmos middle school activities here and Algebra activities here . After joining their Facebook group, I learned that you can create your own activities using their activity builder. Activities include cart sorts, marble slides, graphing, and more. I even saw one teacher create an Among Us activity .  These videos and templates will help you get started. Another shoutout to Desmos for creating these starter slides .

Escape Room

When I first read about Escape Rooms being a popular activity in the classroom, I felt overwhelmed by all of the planning and classroom management it would require. However, in a virtual setting, it is pretty simple. You can watch a tutorial on how to create an escape room here . You just need some math problems and Google Forms. The degree of difficulty for creation and implementation is relatively low.

You can also grab a free escape room for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade here . 6th grade covers order of operations, 7th grade covers percent of a number, and 8th grade covers solving equations with variables on both sides. Use your grade level or the previous grade level for review or additional practice.

Update to all Paper-Based Activities + STUDENT HANDOUTS

Teachers and students love the Maneuvering the Middle paper-based activities – scavenger hunts , “Find It and Fix It,” ”He Said, She Said,” and our mazes. If you own the curriculum, you can now implement these paper-based activities digitally with Google Slides and Google Forms! Whether your students are learning at home OR socially distanced in the classroom, these digital activities are paperless, engaging and a break from the traditional routine.

Student handouts and homework assignments are now accessible inside Google Slides too.

Google Forms for Assessments

I know that this isn’t an activity per se, but testing does require your class time and your energy, so it seems pretty active to me (ha!). Whether you are in-person or online or hybrid, you need to say goodbye to hand-grading your assessments. BYE! Most learning management systems can test, grade, and distribute feedback to students. If you do not have a LMS with your school, good news, Google Classroom is free and using Google Forms for assessments is the best! Besides the aforementioned benefits, Maneuvering the Middle curriculum has all of its unit tests on Google Forms. You can get Digital Assessments (update 2022: and our digital quizzes too!) in our All Access membership .

Kahoot/Quizlet/Quizzizz/BLOOKET

Since I am a member of several middle school math Facebook groups, I frequently see teachers ask for activity ideas for students to participate in virtually.  One of these 4 online gaming platforms is ALWAYS mentioned. Why? Because students love them and teachers love them. All four platforms have pivoted their models to work with distance learning and they all have free features. Learn more about Gimkit here , Quizizz here , Kahoot here , and Booket here .  The best part? Students who are typically reluctant about math become your must enthusiastic participants.

What online resources would make teaching easier and more enjoyable? What digital math resources and tools are your students favorite?

How to Insert Equations in Google Slides? A Simple Way!

By: Author Shrot Katewa

How to Insert Equations in Google Slides? A Simple Way!

Google Slides is usually amazing! But, when it comes to adding mathematical symbols and equations in Google Slides, it just feels like a hassle! If you are new to Google Slides, especially if you are a teacher or a student, you will definitely be left wondering whether you can add equations in Google Slides!

You can use the “Special Characters” option to insert equations in Google Slides. First, click on “Insert”. Then, select the “Special Characters” option from the dropdown. A new window will open up. You can either choose the category or simply search for the symbol by name and build the equation.

In the rest of this article, I will explain how to use the built-in feature and add-ons to add equations in Google slides. I will also discuss adding chemical formulae in Google Slides. So, stick around till the end with me to learn the basics of adding equations in Google slides !

A Quick Note Before We Begin – if you want to make jaw-dropping presentations, I would recommend using one of these Presentation Designs . The best part is – it is only $16.5 a month, but you get to download and use as many presentation designs as you like! I personally use it from time-to-time, and it makes my task of making beautiful presentations really quick and easy!

Can you Insert an Equation in Google Slides?

Preparing a slide is nothing complicated If it contains normal text and images. The problem arises when you have to include any mathematical equations or chemistry formulae in your slides. The normal keyboard doesn’t contain any keys for math symbols. Furthermore, the sheer number of these symbols used makes it impossible to add any keyboard shortcuts either.

Luckily Google Slides has an inline feature that allows the users to add symbols. You can write pretty much any math equation and formula using symbols provided as part of the “Special Characters” feature in Google Slides . There was a time when you could write equations in Google docs and add that to your Slide but Google has removed that feature.

Another way to add equations in Google slides is using third-party add-ons. There are a few handy add-ons in the Google workspace marketplace for writing mathematical symbols with ease. These add-ons are full of features and very user-friendly. I shall be discussing a couple of the most useful ones later in the article.

For now, let’s understand how to insert a math equation in Google Slides.

How to Insert Math Equations in Google Slides?

As I’ve mentioned above, there are two methods to insert math equations in Google slides. you can use either. You can use mathematical symbols from the built-in feature or you can use add-ons.

Here’s how you can insert math equations in Google Slides using the built-in feature:

  • Insert a “ Text Box ” on a blank slide. Then, double click inside the text box to be in edit mode.

math homework google slides

  • Click on Insert > Special characters
  • A dialogue box will appear.

math homework google slides

  • Select ‘symbol’ from the left drop-down menu and ‘Maths’ from the right drop-down menu.
  • You can also search for the symbol directly in the search bar. For instance, if you want to add a “greater than equal to” sign, just type that in the search bar.

math homework google slides

  • Insert the necessary symbols to write the required math equation.

Pro Tip! To superscript text in Google Slides , simply click on “ Insert ” and choose “ Special Characters ” from the dropdown menu. Then, in the window that pops up, search for “ superscript “. Choose the text you want to superscript.

How to Write Fractions in Google Slides?

When making a presentation on mathematics, writing fractions is inevitable. Writing fractions on Google Slides is one of the easiest things to do. Google has made this feature so easy that you won’t even need to use the special characters feature.

I have covered the topic of writing fractions in Google Slides in great detail in another article. Make sure to check out my other article as well for more tips and tricks!

To insert fractions in Google Slides, simply use the oblique (/) sign on the keyboard between the numbers to convert them into a fraction. You can find the oblique key usually located to the left of the right “SHIFT” key on your keyboard.

Let’s take a look at the detailed step-by-step process –

math homework google slides

Let’s say we want to write ‘half’. Do do that, just type one (1) from the keyboard, then oblique (/), and then two (2).

Now, press “Space” or “Enter” and it will be automatically written in fraction form and look like this: ½.

math homework google slides

Similarly, if you want to write three-fourth or two-third, write the corresponding numbers and symbols sequentially and they will appear in the fraction form.

If you have add-ons and want to use them, you can do that too. Go to the add-ons tab and select the one you want to work with. But I highly recommend just typing in with your keyboard considering how convenient it is.

Is There an Equation Editor in Google Slides?

Currently, there is no built-in equation editor in Google Slides. However, there are multiple equation editor add-ons that are available. Simply go to Add-ons menu>Get add-ons. In the pop-up, search for equation editor (or Math editor), choose the add-on you like and click install.

Most of the equation editors are third-party and free to use. You can find them on Google workspace marketplace by clicking on the ‘plus (+)’ icon from the right-side panel. You will have to sign in with a valid Gmail account. The add-on will seek permission to see various information or data on your account.

But, you won’t have to worry about that. As they are on the Google workspace marketplace, they are verified by Google and usually safe. They are very user-oriented as well.

Best Equation Editor Plugins for Google Slides

There are several add-ons for writing mathematical terms in Google slides. While all of them are quite good, some are the absolute best. Following are the two best equation editors that I’ve found to be the most useful:

1. MathType

MathType is by far the king of equation editor plugins for Google slide. It’s super easy to use. Even if you are a new user, you can easily write any equation you want. There is a separate section for writing chemical formulas. So, if you are a lab geek, MathType has got your back.

It also supports a touchpad. If you are on a touch-enabled device, you can write any equation using your fingers and MathType will recognize it.

2. Hypatia Create

Hypatia Create is loaded with features. It is user-friendly and publication-quality math can be added to your presentation. It has both Google docs and Google slides add-on. It has integration with MathType and Mathpix for a better user experience. You can also use the LaTeX commands to insert equations.

For using add-ons, do the followings:

  • Open or start a new presentation.
  • Click on the plus (+) icon on the right-side panel.
  • Google workplace marketplace window shall appear.
  • Search for your desired add-on from the search bar.
  • Install the add-on.
  • Now go to the ‘Add-ons’ tab.
  • Click on the one you want to work with (if you’ve installed multiple add-ons)
  • Insert equations.

How to Write Chemical Formula in Google Slides?

There isn’t any built-in feature in Google slides to write a chemical formula. However, you can do that easily by using the MathType add-on. follow the steps below:

  • When selecting MathType, go to ‘Insert/edit chem formula.’
  • You will see various chemistry symbols.
  • The symbols are categorized under different tabs such as Symbols, Arrow’s tab, Matrices, and elementary tab, etc.
  • The first tab has a dedicated periodic table.
  • Use the periodic table and the symbols to write your desired equation.
  • You can use the touchpad to write formulas as well.
