Undergraduate Research at Michigan State

Undergraduate Research at MSU is your time to explore. It’s your time to find your passions and new areas of interest. It’s your time to start making your mark.

In joining Undergraduate Research at MSU, you’re joining an exhilarating, collaborative culture dedicated to creativity, experimentation, and discovery.

What exactly is research?

Research is conducted in every academic discipline, and it takes multiple forms. Historians sift through archives, anthropologists perform studies in the field, physicists work in laboratories, artists paint in studios, and filmmakers shoot, view, and assemble footage into films.

At its base, research is any scholarly or creative activity that leads to new knowledge, improves our ability to solve problems, or results in new theory, art, or artistic performances.

As one of the top 100 most innovative universities in the country, there is no place more exciting to conduct research than at Michigan State University.

What about undergraduate research specifically?

In undergraduate research at MSU, you’ll collaborate with a research mentor and potentially other students. Your mentor will guide you through your research journey as you absorb new knowledge, improve your problem solving skills, and tackle interactive, discovery-based experiences.

You’ll be introduced to the ever-evolving world of academic research and learn the numerous components involved in the process. As you progress further into your research journey, your knowledge base will grow deeper and your research contributions will grow larger.

Undergraduate research provides a unique channel for exploring your particular academic discipline that you just can’t get in the classroom. You’ll engage with material on a deeper level and refine your knowledge in practical applications. Books are great, but the fun lies in doing.

Your course load and schedule will determine the hours per week you spend researching. Depending on your time commitments and how long you engage in undergraduate research, you might not be able to make an original research contribution. But you will discover exciting new things about your academic area of interest that may very well shape the professional path you take in the future.

Benefits of undergraduate research

75% of undergraduate researchers are juniors or seniors (or upper level students)

62% of undergraduate researchers identify as women

22% of undergraduate researches are first-generation students (the first in their families to attend college)

April 12, 2024

Undergraduates present research at 2024 University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum

On Friday, April 12, 11 economics majors presented their research at the 2024 University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) at the Breslin Center.  UURAF provides Michigan State University undergraduate students with an opportunity to showcase their scholarship and creative activity. Held each spring, UURAF brings together an intellectual community of undergraduate students to share their work with faculty, staff, peers, and external audiences. Participants gain experience in presenting their research, answer questions about their work from audience members and guests and receive constructive feedback from judges . Saanvi Dadwal , Ethan Fick, Jiayi Gu, Mason Hambley, Sumaiya Imad, Aria Muchhal, Johnny Myall, Emma Nicolaysen, Denis Selyuzhitsky , Jalan Shrishti and Alayna Tisch represented majors from the MSU Department of Economics.

Saanvi Dadwal presented her research, “Research Institute for Structural Change: Intersectional Feminism and the Economy,” investigating how our c urrent laws do or do not provide protection for diverse communities.

Woman with a poster.

Saanvi Dadwal presenting her research at UURAF.

“My research looked at intersectional discrimination and how that affected income patterns in our economy . As somebody who hopes to go to law school, I analyzed the prior legal case precedents and realized that although there were protections for marginalized communities , statistical disparities still persist , especially when we compound different intersecting identities.

Ethan Fick presented his research, “ Effects of PPP Loans on Unemployment during COVID-19 Pandemic,” on whether or not the Paycheck Protection Program loans the government adopted helped small businesses as they intended.

“ What I found was that there was a statistically an d economically insignificant effect of the PPP loans, and I’ve hypothesized that’s due to fraud. One of the things that I takeaway is that there should be better manpower , vetting procedures  and infrastructure for the program ,” Fick said.

Jiayi Jennifer  Gu presented her research, “Elite Advantage: Examining the Concentration Trends in Academic Innovation,” on investigating the lack of diversity in research published by elite journals.

Woman with a poster.

Jiayi Jennifer Gu presenting her research at UURAF.

“ Our goal is to suggest policies that create a more inclusive academic world. We argue for a wider range of voices and innovations to enhance the quality of research in economic growth. Our findings highlight the positive  effect of diverse innovation on economic development ,” Gu said.

Mason Hambley presented his research, “Dumping More Chunks,” with the goal of understanding what helped to motivate students to recycle pizza boxes.

Man with a poster.

Mason Hambley presenting his research at UURAF.

“ Overall , w e saw a decrease in recycling over the three periods , which isn’t exactly what we hoped to see. We thought at minimum they would stay at the base rate of recycling. Clearly there was some other factor that changed consumer behavior. Overall, the main takeaway is that changing consumer behavior isn't as simple as just putting a stamp on the box ,” Hambley said.

Sumaiya Imad presented her research, “Analyzing the Reach and Extent of Co-Production in Psychosis Research Across the Globe,” on X.

Women with a poster.

Sumaiya Imad (left) present ing her research at UURAF.

“ The sample of papers explicitly used co-production in participatory research . We gave each of them a rating from 1-7, at the lowest, for 1 – it was no community involvement, where the people who are supposed to be a part of the co-production, the people with lived experience and who were supposed to be involved in the study had no involvement, so it was irrelevant ; the rating 7 where the people in the community owned the research and led the research , so essentially, they came up with the ideas about how to move forward with the study design, etc., ” Imad said.

They found that only 6.9% of their study samples achieved a 7, so there is room for research studies to grow in co-production.

Aria Muchhal a double major with  genomics and molecular genetics presented her research, “ Sexual Dimorphism in Lupus Mediated by Xist RNA .” Muchhal received first place in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics category.

In addition to his economics studies, Johnny Myall wa s interested in learning more about anthropology this semester and worked with Gabe Robel , Ph.D. in the MSU Department of Anthropology to research “ Using a Bone Profile to Bring to Light the Lives of Past Humans .”

Emma Nicolaysen, double major with neuroscience , presented her research, “ Navigating the Sy s tem: Health Literacy and Barriers to Accessible Healthcare Among Michigan’s Elderly Population .” For her research, she received first place in the diversity and interdisciplinary studies category .

Denis Selyuzhitsky and Jalan Shrishti present ed their research, “ The Clean Conscience Initiative, ” a multi-year study to first understand what type of messaging will help MSU students conserve water , and then to see what happens when they implement it.

Two women and one man with a poster.

Denis Selyuzhitsky ( right) and Jalan Shrishti (middle) present ing their research at UURAF.

“ We did a study to see how students look at reducing shower times. In general, it seems they don’t pay attention to how long they take a shower, but we saw a lot of compliance with people in the community which showed that normative messaging should be very effective here, ” Selyuzhitsky said.

“In the future, 2024, we will have messaging that looks like this in ths shower stalls to see if our messaging which relates to community and engages students will help to reduce student water uses,” Shrishti said.

Alayna Tisch presented her research, “Determinants of Body Image,” on whether red meat consumption would influence a person’s satisfaction with their body.

Woman with a poster.

Alayna Tisch presents her research project at UURAF.

“ As a result of our project we found that the correlation and BMI score and our measure of body image was sta tistically significant and negatively correlated, indicating that higher levels of BMI were associated with lover levels of body image satisfaction , we found that diet type and the decision whether or not to consume red meat. But some factors that were associated with body satisfaction were strong political beliefs, marriage status, and higher levels of education .”

Tisch received first place in the nutrition and food science category.

The MSU Department of Economics is extremely proud of their undergraduate students’ dedication to research and real-world impact.

Spartan family’s generosity brings genetic autism expert to msu.

April 25, 2024

Genetic autism expert recruited to Grand Rapids as the Mall Family professor

A $2 million investment at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine by the Mall Family Foundation has empowered the recruitment of genetic autism research expert Lucas Pozzo-Miller, PhD, to MSU as the inaugural Mall Family Endowed Professor in Genetic Autism Research.

“The Mall family’s commitment to advancing and treating genetic autism has helped us to successfully recruit one of the nation’s top experts to MSU with the magnet of endowed funding,” said MSU College of Human Medicine Dean Aron Sousa, MD. “The innovations we anticipate seeing will surely advance human health, and we are incredibly excited at the research possibilities.”

The Mall Family Foundation was formed in 2007 to support a wide variety of education, community and health-related nonprofits, and for more than a decade, has been an essential partner in supporting MSU genetic autism research. The Mall’s grandson was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in 2003, which has served as a deep personal motivation for making MSU funding commitments.

“We are so excited at the research possibilities, and with Dr. Pozzo-Miller being right here in Grand Rapids, we feel incredibly hopeful,” Tom Mall said. “The recent advances employed by MSU’s research team in big data, AI technology, and genetic editing using CRISPR technology brings us more confidence that autism can be conquered.”

Lucas Pozzo-Miller headshot.

Autism or autism spectrum disorder, also known as idiopathic non-syndromic autism, is a complex brain development disorder that affects a person’s behavior, and their social and communication skills. There is no known single cause of idiopathic autism, current scientific knowledge points to complex interactions between genetic susceptibilities with toxic environmental exposures.

When deciding to come to MSU from UAB, Pozzo-Miller says his number one reason was joining the MSU research team in Grand Rapids—a skilled team of developmental neuroscience researchers (Dan Campbell, Dan Vogt, Barbara Thompson, Michael Williams and Jeff MacKeigan) plus disease expert Andre Bachmann, PhD, who discovered in 2022 that repurposing an existing prescription drug could successfully treat a rare genetic disorder—and accessing partnerships with the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital; the knowledge and technical capacity at the Van Andel Institute; and MSU’s nationally-recognized centers of excellence in neuroscience research.

Right now, there is no cure for idiopathic autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the disorder is common — 1 in 36 (2.8%) 8-year-old children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder according to the CDC .

“There are complex factors leading to an autism diagnosis, and as one of the leading autism research departments in the country, we are collectively working to share accurate, fact-based information with the autism community,” said MSU Department of Pediatrics Chair Keith English, MD. “We also know that repurposing drugs saves precious time and money, making it possible to arrive at solutions much faster.”

This convergence of knowledge, partnerships and philanthropy uniquely positions the College of Human Medicine to positively impact genetic autism research. Other MSU assets include the college’s statewide partnerships with 13 community hospitals, and a national database housed at MSU containing over 30 years of data.

Morehead State among universities to receive NSF/KCV funding for academic research

  • 22 April 2024

Morehead State is recognized for academic excellence and a commitment to faculty and student research. MSU recently received significant funding to further research efforts and opportunities.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded more than $8.25 million to Kentucky Commercialization Ventures (KCV), an initiative of the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC), for a program addressing inequities in academic research funding. It will support underrepresented higher education institutions with research infrastructure like Morehead State.

The project, Granting Emerging and Developing Institutions a Competitive EDGE (Equitable and Diverse Grant Ecosystem), or KCV EDGE, will provide holistic support for research grant administration to partner institutions MSU, Kentucky State University (KSU), and Northern Kentucky University (NKU).

"MSU is excited to be part of this KCV EDGE award. We look forward to working with KCV, NKU, and KSU to enhance our research infrastructure and help to create more opportunities for MSU faculty and staff in their pursuit of external funds," said MSU Director of Research & Sponsored Programs Dr. Shannon Harr. "We are also thrilled to be able to enhance some of our Office of Research & Sponsored Programs procedures utilizing these funds."

KCV Executive Director Kayla Meisner said the program emerged because some Kentucky institutions needed equal access to research funding.

"We designed KCV EDGE to dismantle these barriers to give our regional, rural, minority-serving, and community and technical institutions a competitive advantage when pursuing federal research grants," Meisner said. "Through their success, we can transform research infrastructure in the commonwealth and beyond."

The KCV EDGE program will support MSU, KSU and NKU for five years to help each institution develop sustainable research infrastructure. Partner institutions will receive support in grant proposal writing, administration and compliance, technology commercialization and leadership development. Additionally, over $5 million of the grant will be given as sub-awards to partner institutions to build institutional capacity, such as staffing, to support an expanded research enterprise.

The KCV team plans to expand the program into a statewide and later national model to increase access to research funding and technology transfer support.

KSTC President Terry Samuel said this KCV grant funding naturally expands and supports KSTC's efforts to assist Kentucky higher education institutions that need more dedicated technology transfer resources.

"This unprecedented, shared services model is already making a difference for innovators throughout the state, and with the addition of KCV EDGE, has the power to make a national impact," Samuel said.

The KCV EDGE program funding will support MSU's future academic research efforts and significantly benefit not just Kentucky higher education but the state's future economy.

"This award is a testament to the work of Kentucky Commercialization Ventures and the many higher education researchers, who are already creating opportunities for Kentucky to build upon the economic momentum we're experiencing throughout the state," said Governor Andy Beshear. "We know there are great ideas coming from faculty, staff and students on campuses across Kentucky. By helping all of our postsecondary institutions succeed in pursuing additional research funding, KCV EDGE will strengthen Kentucky's competitiveness as a center for research and innovation while creating high-quality jobs in the region."
