I live in New Delhi. It is one of the most populated cities in India. My city is famous for its remarkable architecture. Everyday, millions of tourists from all over the world visit my city to experience its rich culture and astounding architecture, such as the Red Fort built by Shah Jahan and Qutub Minar, built by Qutb-din-Aibak.

My city also has great historical importance. It has been the centre of many previous empires, and even now, it is the capital of India. I love my city, and in the future, after becoming a successful person, I would like to live in this city with my family and friends.

I was born and brought up in New Delhi. My city is one of the busiest cities in the country. Delhi is crowded and filled with marketplaces such as Sarojini Nagar and Connaught Place, which are flocked by thousands of shoppers daily.

Education And Work | Delhi also has many educational institutes and coaching centres. Students from all over the country come here to prepare for their dream jobs. Many huge multinational companies like Google and Microsoft have their offices here and therefore it has a large working population that lives here and provides their services.

New Delhi, the city I proudly call my home, has been a centre of art, architecture, culture, and trade for centuries. It has a population of over one crore and is situated on the banks of the Yamuna river. I have been living in this city for 18 years. Since the population is huge, most of us in Delhi live in apartments built in high-rise buildings.

An Urban Centre

The city is closely woven with a vast metro network connecting it to other metropolises in the National Capital Region. My city has an effective public transportation system, and lakhs of people travel by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and the metro, on a daily basis. A major part of the population of my city consists of the younger generation studying in colleges or working in offices.

Places To See

There are many other marketplaces in my city. New Delhi also has many malls, cafés, and parks. The parks in my city are lovely, such as the Lodhi Garden, Central Park, and the Garden of Five Senses, and are always flocked by visitors.

New Delhi remains a big hustle and bustle the whole day, even at midnight. It is an urban centre in the true sense.

Architecture

Delhi has a rich history and numerous monuments, such as mosques, forts, and mausoleums. Places such as India Gate, Red Fort, Jantar Mantar, and Jama Masjid are architectural marvels and have great historical importance. Many great rulers and historically important figures have their tombs in my city. Delhi is also home to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Parliament of India. I am always left in awe whenever I visit these monuments.

Foodies’ Heaven

Delhi is famous for its food. Parathas from the Paratha Gali in Chandni Chowk, Momos in Lajpat Nagar, and chicken stalls in Jama Masjid are enjoyed by tourists and visitors worldwide. From roadside stalls to lavish and expensive restaurants, you can always find good food in my city, for your taste buds to relish. My favourite food is the momos, famous as “Delhi ke momos” in the country.

What I Love About Delhi

Although there is hardly anything about Delhi that I do not like, here are a few things I love the most about my city:-

I love travelling by metro. The metro in my city is very clean, fast, and affordable. I love to explore my city.

I have explored the bazaars and many of my favourite places numerous times with my friends. Likewise, I am particularly fond of the Sarojini Market in my city because it has cheap clothes and great food stalls.

The best place in my city is the Delhi zoo. I love watching different kinds of animals. My favourite animal in the zoo is the giraffe. I also like watching different types of birds.

Despite the problem of alarming pollution levels, I love my city for what it is. It still is a beautiful place to live and has so much to offer, being the capital of India. My city has played a huge role in making me the person I am today. It has been home of my parents and grandparents for years. I have fond memories of my city which I can never part away with. Everything about my city is cherishable and unique to me.

Since the last few months my parents have also started allowing me to go to the malls with friends although they pick and drop me to the place. Excursions to these malls are super exciting. I have visited Imam Bara quite a few times. The first time I visited this place with my parents when I was very young. A few years later I visited the place as a part of my school excursion. We also went to the place when my maternal aunt and cousins visited us. I can visit Imam Bara over and over again and still not get bored.

We often visited marine drive in the evening. A stroll by the river side was extremely rejuvenating. I also loved shopping trips to Bhootnath and Hazrat Ganj markets with my mother. We both love shopping and the variety of things we got there was just amazing.

Lotus Temple

Last summer vacation I was able to visit a very wonderful city inside the Emirates, which is the city of Ajman. The Emirate of Ajman is the smallest in the UAE, with an area of 260 square kilometers. The Emirate of Ajman overlooks the Arab coast. I really enjoyed seeing the coast and doing some fun activities on it.

I liked very much that the temperature in the summer is moderate, unlike the temperatures in my city or other cities in the Emirates.

So I was able to walk around and enjoy several things such as the Ajman Museum, I liked its location very much and the shape of the surrounding castles and the old walls, I felt the grandeur of history and the splendor of the place.

My favorite spot in the city is definitely Sukhna Lake. This place is worth visiting during the day. The atmosphere in the morning is completely different in the evening. In the morning this place fills with calm and fresh air. It is the best place to relax and play. In the evening there is a huge crowd of people enjoying the boat ride and having breakfast. Electronic swings have also been installed for children. This place fills up with the hustle and bustle of people during the evening. It is a good place to go out with friends and colleagues. I can visit this place early in the morning and in the evening. I love when this place is quiet and when it is full of people.

Lotus Temple

Qutub Minar

Another architectural brilliance is the Qutub Minar which is made of red sand. It was built by Qutb-ud-din-Aibak. This 73 meter tall building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of five storeys connected by means of zigzag stairs.

India Gate is another historical monument of the city that attracts many tourists from all over the world. The names of the martyrs are engraved on this monument. Amar Jawan Jyoti has been lit at this memorial which pays tribute to the Indian soldiers.

Akshar Dham Temple

Akshar Dhar Temple is a place of devotion and purity. This is the latest in the list of monuments in Delhi. It was opened to the public in the year 2005. Apart from beautifully carved temples and other wonderful buildings, the Akshardham complex comprises of lush green gardens and water bodies.

I have been to all these places and want to visit them again and again. I have beautiful memories of these places.

Apart from the historical monuments, Delhi also has many places to shop around. It can certainly give pleasure to the shopper. I like to visit different markets which not only give me an opportunity to buy good stuff but also give me a chance to enjoy street food. I can't even imagine living anywhere other than Delhi.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice. For me, this station resembles a presidential palace. You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

When I told my friends I was taking a trip out of Chicago during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, they looked at me confused and asked, “Why would you leave during the best weekend in Chicago?”

Getting out of the city wasn’t about escaping the crowded downtown area or missing the green river. Instead, I left to go see a production of “Shrek the Musical” put on by Carlinville High School.

My roommate and close friend Megan lived in Carlinville, Illinois before she came to Loyola. Her two younger twin brothers attend the high school and one of them performs with the school theater.

Last year, Megan, our other two roommates and I went to see him perform in “The Little Mermaid” as Sebastian and this year, when he got the leading role as Shrek, I knew I wouldn’t miss it for anything.

Carlinville is located about halfway between Springfield and St. Louis and is 258 miles from campus. The town has a population of around 6,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau , and has one of those cute little city centers with a cute gazebo like in Hallmark movies. There are also dirt roads basically everywhere.

I had been waiting for this trip ever since we got back from Carlinville last year. I looked forward to seeing the sun glisten on the lake Megan and her family lives on in the morning and to look up and finally see the stars again at night. I also wanted a breath of fresh air.

The change of scenery is something that makes me miss my own hometown of Trenton, Michigan. In Carlinville, there are no police sirens or people yelling on the streets at night. There’s no L rolling past my window. It’s all pure bliss.

Getting out of the city was extremely beneficial for me and my roommates. Not only did we get to see pictures of young Megan — which will now be a running joke in our group chats — but we got to get out of the congestion being in the city brings.

I’m not saying everyone should permanently leave big cities. I love being so close to the hustle and bustle in Chicago — but a little break once in a while doesn’t hurt.

As soon as we boarded the Lincoln Service Amtrak train and left Union Station, it felt like all my worries went away. It was just me and my favorite people playing Uno while we traveled four hours to our rural destination.

What I loved the most about leaving Chicago was the different experiences we had. Megan’s aunts and extended family mainly live in the area, so we got together with them. We did some shopping in the town square and played chess in a coffee shop while drinking Italian sodas and Irish cream macchiatos. We even had a 16-person table at the local pizza restaurant.

If we were doing this in the city, shopping would’ve been more stressful. We would’ve been trying to stick together in a large group while walking through Water Tower Place — which we’ve done before and I got separated from the group more times than I’d like to admit.

Going for coffee would’ve been us yelling across a crowded Metropolis while scouting for a table with different variations of the same drink. And all 16 members of Megan’s family wouldn’t have been able to sit together at a Giordano’s eating mediocre pizza.

The out-of-city experience is so different but so enjoyable. It reminded me of the good parts of my own hometown and made me long for my family and the similar experiences we’ve had.

On our drive back, I saw the cornfields fade away and, along with it, the stars, the space and Shrek. The closer we got to campus, the heavier the traffic was and the more congested I felt.

With Megan’s brother graduating this year, I’m upset there won’t be other musicals to watch and critique on the drive home. I’ll miss the fresh air and the one gas station that gave me my winning scratch-off lottery ticket. I’ll also miss the stars and the small lake.

But that’s the thing about leaving a big city. There will be more towns for me to visit, more cornfields to drive around and more stars to see.

While I love the city, I loved getting a break more. And there’s no better place to do that than a small town.

One travel opportunity is the chance to attend the Association of Writers & Writer Programs (AWP) conference, which seven of us went to in February of this year. This year, the conference was in Kansas City, and it lasted three days: Thursday to Saturday. Each of us individually picked what panels to go to each day. I am writing a poetry thesis, so the first talk I attended was “Sound and Color: Poets and Visual Artists in Exquisite Exchange.” The presentation was my favorite of all of them because of how illuminating and beautiful it was. Each poet had partnered with a visual artist, and they shared the process of working in tandem to create together, displaying photographs, blurbs of text exchanges, paintings, and finally, the finished poetry. Due to this experience, I decided to incorporate visual art into my own practice, and I have since begun working on finding available art as well as creating some myself. Additionally, my mother is a painter and my father is a poet, so I was very excited to share what I had learned with the both of them.

Throughout the few days, I attended panels on drafting tips and tricks (featuring Davidson Professors Parker and Shavers), sharing elegies, queer post-religious poetry, and trans poetics, all of which were a pleasure and incredibly helpful. Another important aspect of the conference was the bookfair. It was a labyrinth, spanning an entire floor of the huge conference center. Besides fun and silly booths — like one labeled “Poetic Help” — the bookfair featured presses, literature reviews, and MFA programs, so I got the chance to talk to experts in the field of writing and publishing. They also tended to give out free books, excitingly, so I got quite the haul, all of which I can’t wait to read. At night, the seven of us — Tavie Kittredge, Michael Chapin, Nate Bagonza, Mason Davis, Taylor Dykes, Abby Morris, and myself — would explore the city, including events put on by AWPers. We went out to dinner together and attended the keynote, a poetry reading at a cat cafe, and a Rock & Roll-themed reading. It was amazing to bond with my peers and explore a new city. Thanks to the funding of the Abbott Scholars Program, I know much more about how to pursue a future in writing.

The seven of us traveling together really solidified the bonds we’ve been building over the past semester and allowed us to spend time together outside of our thesis work, whether that was over Thai or ramen for dinner or just taking the time to explore the city.

Getting to spend that time at AWP was incredibly special because, for me at least, it was the first time being surrounded by people deeply connected and committed to writing in all its forms. We attended events ranging from poetry readings at cat cafés to queer narrative presentations in speakeasy bars.

My personal highlight of the conference was listening to Jericho Brown deliver the keynote speech in which he called on us to challenge the world as we know it — to challenge book bans and our perception of the world as impossible to change. Brown asked why we can’t imagine a better world while acknowledging that a better world is not created without a fight. A quote from the speech that has stuck with me in the weeks since was his question: “If the fight is against fascism, who do we need to be if we lose that fight?” And then, who do we need to be to win?

The best part of the conference? Talking to authors, talking to MFA directors, talking to independent publishers … Being honest about what I wanted to know and not feeling awkward about lacking experience was so valuable.

The best single moment I had was cornering Susan Choi and telling her how much I loved Trust Exercise . She seemed so delighted that I loved the book, which warmed my heart. AWP carried an infectious feeling of immense creative potential that has stuck with me vividly.

Now that I’ve seen a piece of the literary world, I want to be a part of it. I loved talking about books and the book-world all day. It felt a bit like the Davidson College campus except that everyone wants to do creative writing. That was a dream for me. I felt sad coming back to reality ... Sitting side-by-side with people who have just done a fantastic reading, or highly regarded editors, or publishers etc. etc. made me feel like my goals are imminently possible. There is so, so much writing out there and so many people making it work, somehow. If they can do it, so can I.

I'd also been skeptical about MFA programs (how will I afford it? is it even necessary?), but meeting all those MFA students and directors has convinced me that I'd be doing myself a serious disservice by not applying to programs in the next 1-5 years, depending on where life takes me. Not to get ahead of myself.

I want to express my gratitude to the Abbott family (and personally Susan, who was so wonderful to share a dinner with) for the opportunity to, in a sense, role-play as a 'real' writer for an extended weekend and get to try on those shoes. I liked how they fit. I can only speak with certainty for myself, but I know I felt (re)invigorated in becoming a person of letters.

‘Oppenheimer,’ My Uncle and the Secrets America Still Doesn’t Like to Tell

The darkened sky stretches over miles of desert sand as in the distance, from an illuminated scaffold, the object rises that will change the world. The first atomic test is the defining scene in “Oppenheimer,” which won seven Academy Awards on Sunday night, including best picture. The scene plays out over seven or so minutes of steadily escalating tension: No one knew whether the bomb would go off at all that night and, if it did, whether it would incinerate the whole world.

Watching the film on opening weekend, I found the scene excruciating, even though history had long since recorded the outcome. I just kept staring at the Los Alamos scientists who gathered to witness the big event, lying under the stars as though taking in an outdoor movie, with nothing more to protect them than a small eye shade. The physicist Edward Teller is the only one who seems to recognize the need for any precautions, and he addresses it by applying sunscreen.

“Oppenheimer” is a movie about a singular genius, an extraordinary collaboration and a turning point in history. But it’s also a lesson in applied physics: the way a lone catalyst may trigger a chain reaction whose impact cannot be predicted or controlled. J. Robert Oppenheimer’s greatest triumph set into motion forces that brought about his downfall. An innovation designed to make the world safer in the long term made it manifestly more dangerous . And in subsequent atomic tests through the postwar years, many Americans were deliberately exposed to radiation, to see what the blast and its aftermath would do to them.

Soldiers were marched through detonation sites when the sand cooled down enough to walk on; pilots were sent through the still-billowing clouds; sailors were lined up on nearby boats. At the Yucca Flat testing grounds in Nevada, an Army band was even summoned to play. I know that last part because my uncle Richard Gigger was the band’s leader.

Richard enlisted in 1946. He was a 16-year-old Black kid in a still-segregated Army, but it got him from East St. Louis to Germany. While there, he got permission to attend a music training program in Dachau, of all places, led by members of the Berlin Philharmonic. It changed his life. Over the next decades he performed for heads of state, led ticker-tape parades through Manhattan and made numerous appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

On multiple occasions between 1952 and 1955, his responsibilities also included playing “Shake, Rattle and Roll” to accompany the most destructive force in human history.

Other atomic veterans , as they have come to be known, were in the South Pacific, wading through radioactive water while filling in blast craters. You can hear former service members speak about a range of these experiences — with pride, honor and a deep sense of betrayal — in a documentary called “ I Have Seen the Dragon .” Richard’s in it, too.

After 25 years spanning three wars, he retired from the Army and met my aunt Ellen. Together they started teaching music at San Fernando High School, where they led the marching band to so many championships — 13 in all, 11 of them consecutively — that it almost wasn’t fair. Along the way they mentored hundreds or maybe thousands of kids, many of whom still credit them with changing their lives. A school building and an intersection were renamed in tribute. There’s a huge mural , too. But eventually Richard’s military service caught up with him, as it did for so many others.

For Richard it started with a pituitary tumor. Surgeons removed it, but the result, a few years later, was a cranial bleed and brain damage that worsened over time.

As a kid I found my uncle kind but intimidating, a larger-than-life mix of showman’s bravado and military rigor. After the bleed, all that was gone. He moved slowly and said little. He could still play musical instruments, but in the documentary, it’s my aunt who speaks. Richard sits, silent. He died three months later.

For five decades, atomic veterans were forbidden to tell anyone about their experience, not even a spouse or doctor. That has made it hard to get a reliable accounting of their numbers, or of the medical consequences they suffered, which include leukemia, thyroid cancer, esophagus cancer and multiple myeloma. It has also made it hard for them or their family members to get needed support. To prove her case to the Department of Veterans Affairs, my aunt spent long hours in the library reading scientific articles about atmospheric ionizing radiation (many of which she first had to get translated from Japanese), went digging through the archives of old Nevada newspapers, consulted doctors. She was rebuffed many times but finally, after seven years, the V.A. relented. It confirmed that Richard’s condition was most likely caused by his exposure. That qualified her to receive modest compensation.

A number of conditions are now “ presumptive ” for atomic vets, meaning that they’re assumed to be a result of their service. But there’s no way to know how many people suffered or died before that policy was adopted or how many other conditions may also be the result of exposure — nor how many families couldn’t undertake the kind of research my aunt did or persevere through so many setbacks. The veterans’ numbers are dwindling, but these questions remain urgent, since the effects of radiation can be passed on to children and grandchildren.

“Oppenheimer” has been criticized for not showing the devastation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I think it was the right choice. It would have been offensive, maybe even obscene, to reduce that suffering to a subplot of a great-man biopic, a movie that, however deeply based in fact , is ultimately an entertainment, a fiction. Leaving Japan’s horror to the imagination, or to the intrusive thoughts you can see Oppenheimer struggling to shut out, felt to me like appropriate humility about the limits of representation, as when the film goes all but silent when the blast first registers.

As for the bomb’s effect on American bodies, the sight of those unprotected scientists is the closest the film comes. The scene plays like a metaphor for how naïvely optimistic the nuclear program was, how unprepared the nation, or even the world, was for the terrors it would unleash. After the test, when the Army guys crate up the remaining bombs and drive them away, Oppenheimer tells Teller, “Once it’s used, nuclear war, perhaps all war, becomes unthinkable.” Equally unthinkable, I suspect, would have been the idea that the United States would intentionally inflict some of the bomb’s harmful effects on its own service members.

If “Oppenheimer” were a more traditional film, Japan’s surrender might have been the climax. But the movie continues for another hour, turning its attention to Oppenheimer’s struggle to retain his security clearance, a fight that plays out in parallel with a Washington insider’s struggle to secure a cabinet post. It’s possible to leave the theater with the impression that, in the United States at least, the main victim of the bomb was Oppenheimer’s career.

For my uncle, the fallout came later. For some other atomic vets or their families — or for people living near test sites such as those in Nevada and the Marshall Islands and of course for people in Japan — it may yet be in the future. The film honored at the Oscars told a very specific story, but countless other lives trace back to that day, too. In one way or another, no one emerged untouched. We are all living downwind of that first momentous blast.
