Your dissertation template

A template is provided to use for your dissertation. We recommend you use this as soon as you start any writing  rather than trying to apply it afterwards. As well as showing you the structure for your dissertation, it has built in styles than can help you format it as required for a long academic document.

Scroll down the page to find videos to help you with using the template.

Downloading the template

The template for your dissertation is provided here:

Nursing Dissertation Template

This includes a pre-created PRISMA flow diagram (just add the numbers) and the NMC template for Part B. If you are not using this format for Part B then you will of course need to delete/amend this.

Just click on either the link above or the image on the right to download the template. It will usually be automatically saved into your 'downloads' folder. We recommend moving it from there to a dedicated folder where you keep everything for your dissertation.

Important note:

You do not need to alter any of the fonts in the template, they have been approved by your faculty. Please ignore any advice that you see elsewhere about using alternative fonts.

Videos showing you how to use the template

The Skills Team have provided three videos which show you how to use the template. These are:

  • An introduction to the template - including filling the title page
  • Using the built-in styles and updating the table of contents
  • Adding labels to your tables and figures and updating the lists of these

There are also some other videos that support using the generic university template (rather than the Nursing one specifically) that may be useful to some of you. These include using the cross-referencing tool and inserting landscape documents. You can find these videos on the Skills Team's  Undergraduate Dissertation Video Workshop page. Not all of you will find these useful however, so they are not included here.

The future of MSc nursing dissertations – a victim of its own success?

In our blog this week, Dr Nicola Roberts (@DrNRoberts) and Mr Ben Parkinson (@ParkinsonBen1) from Glasgow Caledonian University discuss the current changes affecting student research in the NHS and the future for MSc dissertations in nursing.

nursing dissertations uk

The Masters of Sciences degree (MSc) is becoming increasingly popular with nurses and provides a useful stepping stone into advanced nursing roles and/or Doctoral level study (e.g. PhD or Professional Doctorate). For nursing students, the most daunting and time consuming part of their MSc is often the dissertation component. Students usually do a structured literature review or undertake a small piece of research. However, the rules around student research in the NHS are changing and may affect some nursing students completing MSc dissertations.

What is a nursing dissertation? The nursing dissertation usually involves a large written piece of coursework (6-16,000 words) based on an independent study at the end of a University MSc programme. Students are supported during their dissertation by an academic supervisor to undertake research or a review. For nursing students, the MSc dissertation is an opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest and to study the topic in great detail. The MSc dissertation is a demanding assessment and can involve many months of effort and a high level of independent study. Some of the challenges faced by students include working independently, effectively working with their supervisor, having to meet deadlines, and producing high quality academic material. In addition, many students also have other commitments (e.g. employment, child care) and/or have additional support needs (e.g. dyslexia). These factors can make the MSc dissertation both demanding, but also extremely rewarding.

Student research in the NHS Nursing students often want to undertake a research study in their place of work, but all research needs to have ethical approval and students working in the NHS will have to make sure they are eligible to complete their research in the NHS. The guidance on student research in the NHS changed and the new guidance is available online via the Health Research Authority (HRA) . The HRA changes came into effect in September 2021 and affect those completing research for the main purpose of achieving an educational qualification (e.g. Degree, Masters, or Doctorate). The main changes include new eligibility criteria, which changes the type of students who can complete research in the NHS. The new guidance states undergraduate students, for example, will no longer be able to complete research involving the NHS and that Doctoral students studying Health and Social Care related topics will be able to complete research in the NHS ( full guidance ).

The guidance is slightly more confusing for MSc nursing students. Not all MSc students will be able to apply for NHS ethical approval and some types of student MSc students will not be allowed to do research in the NHS. Fortunately, nurses will be one group of students who can conduct research in the NHS, but certain rules apply, nurses need to be studying a Health and Social Care course and the University department supporting the student also needs to be active in Health and Social Care research. The HRA have produced a helpful toolkit for students or supervisors , to help them determine whether their research will be eligible to apply for NHS Research Ethics approval under the new guidance.

Alternatives to student research in the NHS Given the complexity of nursing dissertations and the challenges faced by many nursing students, it is prudent to consider the different options available when completing an MSc dissertation. Being flexible and creative will give nursing students the greatest chance of success when completing their MSc dissertation.

Dissertation options. • Research involving the NHS (check eligibility using student research toolkit ) • Non-research activity in the NHS (e.g. service evaluation, audit, a discussion with R&D may still be needed). • Research activity not involving NHS patient, staff, or resources – student participant study or using organisations or charities, social media. • Literature review (e.g. systematic review). • Write research protocol for future study. • Produce anonymous case report (consent/approval needed).

Other challenges for nursing dissertations Another challenge is the increasing numbers of students completing MSc qualifications. Each year more nurses are seeking MSc qualification, which is excellent for patient care and the nursing profession. However, increasing student numbers and the needs to complete a dissertation can create pressure on the NHS and make it difficult to provide the necessary support for growing numbers of students. With increasing numbers, nursing students can find themselves struggling to come up with an original idea and some popular topics can become over-researched. For example, recently the number of students wanting to study COVID-19 has grown rapidly.

It is also common for nursing students to focus on particular groups of people and/or recruitment pathways. For example, the growth of MSc dissertations has led to an increase in the amount of research being conducting on students, which raises concerns about whether students are being overly burdened by invitations to participate in research. The growth in the numbers of nursing students studying MSc qualifications has also put pressure on finding appropriate academic supervisors, who can support students during their studies. It is important Universities balance the increased demand for MSc study, whilst also maintaining quality for students. Innovative strategies used by Universities include flexible academic supervision, using online methods, incorporating group supervision, and also changing the format of dissertations to better reflect journal publications. It is clear that traditional dissertations may need to adapt in the near future to be fit for purpose and to support the large number of students and the changes to research ethics in the NHS.

Dr Nicola Roberts is a Senior Lecturer and Mr Ben Parkinson is a Lecturer in the Department of Nursing and Community Health (@GCUNursing) at Glasgow Caledonian University, United Kingdom (@GCUSHLS, @GCUReach).

Dissertation (School of Nursing)

  • Get a prospectus

Course Overview

The Dissertation is the test of the Master's degree standard. The purpose of the Dissertation is to contribute substantially to the research training aim that is appropriate to a taught Master's programme. To achieve this aim the student is required to demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy and principles of research (empirical or non-empirical) and show competence in the design, execution and reporting of a research project.

The module enables the student to undertake a piece of empirical work relevant to their area of employment. Ethical approval will be required. Once this has been gained, the approved study can be undertaken.

The module is managed around supervision with an allocated academic.

Module aims

The dissertation represents one third of the degree and provides evidence that the candidate can use the knowledge and skills acquired through the taught components to analyse and review health care systems and clinical or scientific data in a systematic way and to synthesise and evaluate new ideas and approaches.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Communicate a framework of reference (such as a literature review) to show the relevance of the proposed research.
  • Display evidence of critical analysis, independence of thought and an understanding of advanced concepts and methods related to research.
  • Demonstrate the appropriateness and intellectual coherence of the research design/plan of argument for linking questions to methods and conclusions.
  • Select appropriate information gathering methods and implement these effectively and with a high level of judgment.
  • Show evidence of advanced methods of analysis and of a high level of skill in their execution.
  • Where appropriate, evidence of critical evaluation and reassessment of results and techniques during the research period.
  • Show evidence of intellectual rigour in the interpretation of the results of the analysis.
  • Analyse ethical issues (where appropriate).
  • Produce a report of appropriate style, organisation and structure.
  • Display a high level of written English and expository methods.

Entry requirements

Normally a postgraduate diploma in a topic relevant to the title of the degree, passed at an appropriate level, as specified by the Course Regulations.

Module content

Based on his or her understanding from a previous research methods module, the student will prepare a dissertation proposal addressing the learning outcomes above and setting out a programme of work including supervisory arrangements.

To assist the student to prepare for the dissertation the Dissertation module leader will provide a calendar of events setting out the timing of arrangements for the submission and approval of a research plan, key dates in the execution of the individual student's plan, the submission date for the dissertation and the Assessment Board dates. This process will begin before the start of the formal dissertation stage.

The outline proposal will be considered by the Dissertation module leader and at least one other staff member, to judge its feasibility and appropriateness, and to ensure comparability between the different approaches likely to be proposed. The content of the proposed dissertation must be demonstrably relevant to the name of the final award.

N.B. At this stage the outline proposal may be referred back to the student as not acceptable and the student will be asked to resubmit. A student whose outline proposal is referred back may find that their progress is delayed.

After the outline proposal is approved, the student is allocated a supervisor who will advise the student of any modifications thought to be necessary and guide the student to prepare a final proposal for formal approval (mandatory for progression to the formal Dissertation stage), and advise the student on appropriate ethical approval and work with them if external ethical approval is required. At this stage the final proposal may be referred back to the student as not acceptable. A student whose proposal is referred back may find that their progress is delayed.

Workshops will be organized to assist students with their progress. Preparatory workshops will be run to help the students prepare their outline proposal, prior to the formal Dissertation stage, and further workshops (approximately 5 hours) will be offered on a cross-Faculty basis to support the preparation of the dissertation, after the proposal has been approved; these will run alongside one-to-one supervision. Workshops therefore take place both prior to and following formal registration on the Dissertation module; they thus serve to prepare students for the Dissertation module as well as support their research once registered on the module.

Teaching and assessment

This module is supported by one to one supervision via either a subject-specific or methods-specific allocated supervisor. Supervision sessions will be arranged at mutually convenient times and via a mutually agreed method, eg. via an online platform.

Please note: In your programme you may sometimes be expected to role play and engage in simulated clinical scenarios with other students, such as the practice and observation of practical skills in physical contact with other students. For some specific practices, this may necessitate modification of dress - e.g., to shorts and t-shirt. These activities will be conducted in a professional, safe, respectful and culturally sensitive way, under the supervision of academic staff, according to a defined protocol . This does not apply to Clinical Pharmacy practice modules  as all of these modules are distance learning.

Contact us immediately if you are still trying to decide what topics to choose for your nursing dissertation or need help writing your full dissertation paper from scratch.

Step-by-Step Guide to Select a Nursing Dissertation Topic

The healthcare industry encompasses many captivating issues you can address as part of your nursing dissertation research.

We witnessed the value of the nursing profession when Covid-19 spread havoc among the human population. Any matter relating to our health and well-being, whether mental or physical, falls under nursing and medicine.

Choosing a topic for a nursing dissertation could be a very frustrating experience. So how do you choose the best topic for your dissertation and research project? Here are some essential suggestions!

Understand the Requirements of your Institute

One of the worst mistakes students make is they choose a research topic without consulting with their university. Always consult your professor’s manuals, dissertation handbook and instructions before taking another step. Start with comprehensive research, as it is crucial to the process.

There are countless concepts related to your needs and your tutor’s area of research. You must have a basic understanding of the techniques for conducting a literature review, proposing a methodology and performing data analysis.

Process of Developing Nursing Dissertation Ideas

If you select an idea in haste without thinking of the justification for your choice, you will find yourself in trouble somewhere through the process because you will lose the plot.

As a nursing student, you don’t want to research an idea that is not a speciality or too narrow. Therefore, we recommend choosing a topic for which there is a wealth of research is advisable. Nurses are advised to list one or two topics of particular interest in this line. Before starting the research process, they must confirm that these topics fit into their area of expertise.

Where to Find Nursing Dissertation Topic Ideas?

Google scholar, Science direct, and dissertation topic databases can help find inspirational trends and ideas. On the other hand, almost all hospitals subscribe to one or more nursing research databases, each containing articles listed by the relevance and authenticity of the evidence. So, if you do not have access to these databases, you could ask one of our friendly customer services representatives for assistance or find your nursing topic here.

A medical disorder or condition could catch your attention even if you are not a professional nurse yet. You can get inspiration from your friends, family or your own experiences. A suitable topic might come out of your discussions with them.

Students can also focus on a specific health issue if they do not already have a disease or condition that interests them. They can take some time to consider what health problem initially led them to pursue a career in nursing. Since there are not enough literature studies available on ” advanced and latest” topics, you should avoid such issues.

Additional Resources to Consider

When choosing topics, in addition to the sources mentioned above, you can look at some of the latest industry news and trends. It would be even better to base your research on a specific location or demographic. You can also read through some electronic journals or textbooks from different courses to find ideas for topics.

Nursing students should remember that combining their interests is always an option. For example, they can narrow their topic or explore broader issues such as the country’s current socio-economic difficulties or health inequalities.

Topics, including cloning, drugs and medical marijuana, may be worth exploring as I write this article.

Review the Literature Before Selecting the Topic for your Nursing Dissertation

Once you have at least a few topics related to your areas of interest, it is time to pick one topic that may be the most challenging and rewarding for your nursing career.

Start reading the literature on your chosen topic (s). Do a quick literature search in databases such as “CINAHL” or “ProQuest Health & Medical”. In doing so, search for research material you can use as reference resources. Select a topic with adequate available literature that fits your and your tutor’s research interests.

Remember that your initial study ideas can drastically change as you write the dissertation proposal or outline. Keep your options flexible until you have the topic and the dissertation proposal approved by your supervisor.

Choose an Appropriate Research Methodology

Once you have selected a dissertation topic, you need to propose a workable nursing dissertation research methodology that you will use to address the research questions or the hypothesis. The methodology process determines the approach you take to tackle your dissertation topic. You could opt for a secondary research-based dissertation. However, in most cases, nursing students must perform quantitative and primary research for dissertations.

Important Notes

As a student of medicine and nursing looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing medicine and nursing theories – i.e., to add value and interest in the topic of your research.

The field of medicine and nursing is vast and interrelated to so many other academic disciplines like civil engineering ,  construction ,  law ,  healthcare , mental health , artificial intelligence , tourism , physiotherapy , sociology , management , marketing, cryptocurrencies and architecture . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation  as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best medicine and nursing dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Take a look at some of our sample medicine and nursing dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

It can be useful to include  graphs ,  charts and  tables  to this chapter to identify meaningful trends and relationships.
  • Discussion  and  Conclusion: The researcher presents his interpretation of results in this chapter, and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section of the paper is to draw a linkage between the results and evidence from the literature. Busy nurses on an NHS hospital ward

Nurses in England took an average of one week off sick for stress last year, data shows

Chronic workforce shortages have put nursing staff under unbearable pressure, says union chief

Nurses in England took an average of a week off sick last year because of stress, anxiety or depression, NHS figures reveal.

The disclosure has prompted concern that the intense strains nurses face in their jobs, including low pay and understaffing, are damaging their mental health and causing many to quit.

Nurses and health visitors took a total of 1,675,275 days off sick during 2023 as a result of stress and similar conditions, NHS England data showed.

That means that each of England’s 352,125 members of both professions missed an average of 4.95 days at work for that reason, according to a Royal College of Nursing analysis of the figures.

“Dangerous stress levels have become normalised inside an NHS which is unable to cope with demand,” said Prof Pat Cullen, the RCN’s general secretary and chief executive.

“Chronic workforce shortages are putting nurses under unbearable pressure. Nursing staff … are running on empty. Government and NHS leaders need to stop normalising poor mental health among staff.”

In all, nurses and health visitors took 6.9m days off sick last year, but the 1.68m days they missed owing to stress, anxiety and depression were the single biggest source of illness. They comprised 24.3% of the total, up from 21% the year before. Colds and flu were the second largest reason for sick days last year, at 12%.

“These are sobering findings,” said Prof Alison Leary, the chair of healthcare and workforce modelling at London South Bank University. She highlighted that 2023 was the year that – for the first time – nurses who left the NHS cited work-life balance as the reason rather than retirement, according to other NHS data.

Many nurses are experiencing “moral distress”, Leary added. “It exists when a nurse can see what care the patient needs but doesn’t have the resources to provide it.

“Nurses generally are committed people and come to work to do a good job, [but] extreme workloads mean that they cannot do all of their work and this causes them distress,” she said.

Nurse shortages are widespread, with 34,709 vacancies in England. A hospital nurse in the West Midlands told the RCN that the “lack of staff combined with demand for services is a constant worry. It is causing stress and a lack of sleep. I feel low and let down by the system.”

Another nurse said: “[I am] so stressed and anxious about lack of income and financial pressures that my mental health has seriously deteriorated to the point of taking long-term sick leave for the second time in two years.”

The intense pressures of their jobs lead to many nurses and midwives quitting, especially early in their careers. One in eight nursing students drop out during their training, one in nine midwives do not join the profession after they graduate and one in five nurses leave within two years of joining the NHS, according to research published by the Nuffield Trust health thinktank in September.

An independent analysis commissioned by the RCN and published last month found that nurses’ pay fell by an average of nearly 25% between 2010-11 and 2023-24.

The RCN has said their pay levels mean many nurses have been struggling to cope with the soaring inflation that has hit households in recent years.

During 2022-23, more than 12,000 UK-registered nurses applied for a certificate of current professional status, which allows them to work in other countries such as the US and Australia, where nursing pay is higher. That was more than double the number who did so the year before and four times higher than in 2018-19.

The Department of Health and Social Care said: “The most recent NHS staff survey shows improvement in morale and staff experience. And there are now record numbers of doctors and nurses working in the health service.

“NHS England has published a strategy to grow occupational health and wellbeing support, and the NHS long-term workforce plan will retain even more staff, meaning there are up to 190,000 more nurses by 2036-37.”
