We’re going to deal with antonyms in this blog including what they are, what they do, what you need to teach, a lot of examples and some worksheets for your class.
Table of Contents
Antonyms - what are they.
The English language is complex. With a history of adding words and phrases from all over the world, the English language is full of ways of saying the same thing a hundred different ways. It is this ability to convey tiny nuances that helps make English a rich and varied language.
“She walked down the corridor.” – Is rather uninteresting and boring, whereas “She marched down the corridor”, “She trotted down the corridor”, “She flew down the corridor”, “She wandered down the corridor”, all imply something a little different and make us wonder why is she walking like that.
Encouraging students to broaden their vocabulary by using “more interesting” ways of describing a situation or conveying an idea is one of the best ways to improve their writing.
This blog is about antonyms but like the national curriculum we will bundle some information about synonyms here.
The suffix -onym comes from the Ancient Greek and means “name”. For example, an acronym is a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term such as radar – RAdio Detection And Ranging. There’s a great & distracting list of -onym words on Wikipedia .
-onym words provide a means of classifying sets of words with common attributes.
Here we’re going to deal with antonyms (but synonyms and homonyms are part of the national curriculum as well).
Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. For example, good and bad.
Synonyms are words with similar meanings. For example, tiny & small. You can learn more from synonyms through our Emile article with over 600 examples of what a synonym is.
Homonyms are words that are pronounced and spelled the same, but have different meanings. For example, band can be a music group or a ring.
This makes more sense the more examples you see (and we’ve got loads of examples for you!)
Antonyms - What you need to Teach.
Students simply need to understand what an “antonym” or opposite word means.
SATs questions usually prompt students by referring “opposite”. Once a student has understood the principle, then you should only need to remind them once in a while to embed the understanding.
Antonyms - Lesson Ideas.
Start your antonym lesson by reviewing the what synonym and antonym mean.
Get your class going by encouraging them to list as many synonyms of “big” as they can as a class, on their own, in pairs or groups.
Then create a list of antonyms for “big”.
Ask why it is beneficial to add synonyms and antonyms to their vocabularies. (It’s an easy way to expand to make their writing more engaging and expand their vocabulary.)
Antonym Bingo!
Bingo is great way to engage students – especially the competitive ones – with just about any vocabulary unit you are teaching.
To play antonym bingo, you will need a list of words and their antonyms (see below :-)) which your students already know.
Print out blank bingo boards – a table with 15 spaces – for your class – one per student.
Show 30+ words from the list on your IWB.
Ask each student to fill their bingo board with random words from the list.
To play the game:
Read out randomly words that are opposite to those on shown on the iWB.
If a student has a word with the opposite meaning they can mark it off.
Remind students that they should not mark off the word that they hear, but they should mark its opposite!
When someone calls bingo, review the words you called and the appropriate antonyms to make sure the win is true. This can be a great opportunity to review the antonym pairs with your students.
Grammar with Emile
One issue that nearly all teachers encounter is that students remember what antonyms are when they have met them recently, but a few weeks down the line, they can have forgotten all about them.
Grammar with Emile is a great way to harness the power of competition and have them quickly recall grammar terms like antonym and synonym.

INconsiderate or UNconsiderate? UNpolite or IMpolite? It’s amazing how just a couple of letters can cause so much confusion! Opposite Words For Class 3 Kids
What Are Opposite Words?
Benefits of teaching opposite words to 3rd graders, list of opposite words for class 3 kids, questions on opposite words with answers for class 3 children, how can you teach opposite words to children.
English learning is not limited to learning its grammar rules and their usage. To understand the nitty-gritty of the English language, kids also need to learn numerous English words, meanings, uses, and opposites. As the name implies, antonyms or English opposite words are the opposite meaning words of any specific word. Learning antonyms for class 3 students is important as they will better understand the usage of words. For students in class 3 opposite words help express their views better in writing and speech. They can use the most appropriate word to describe something in their daily lives or school and sharpen their language skills in-process. Therefore, it’s important to teach young kids the meanings of words and their antonyms.
Opposite words or antonyms mean opposite meaning words. The term antonym is formed by two words- ‘anti’ and ‘onym’. Both words respectively mean against and name or words with opposite meaning. Kids are asked to learn the meanings of words to use them better in their everyday lives and academics. Similarly, learning antonyms is also important to better their language skills. Antonym words are not only helpful to tell the opposite of anything, feeling or action, but they also help to understand a particular thing better. For example, a young kid can better understand the word tall when they know the word short. Then they have a comparison basis that tells them something is tall compared to something short. Similarly, the concept of full and empty can be understood through opposite words.
Teachers and parents both tell the kids that they should learn the opposite words along with the meanings of words. The young kids get confused about why they need to learn the opposites. Learning the meaning is understandable for them. But the importance of learning opposite words sometimes goes beyond their understanding. But learning opposite words is important for them. Here are some benefits of teaching opposite words to 3rd graders:
- Once the child understands the concept of opposites, they can better use words to express views. For example, to say something is not short, the child can use the word tall. Or to say it is not night, they can say it is a day. This makes their English communication better and helps them do better in their academics.
- Kids improve their critical thinking skills and enhance communication skills when they learn opposite words.
- They can now compare and understand things around them better. Like they can compare hot and cold or short and tall. Otherwise, it would have been – short and not short.
- Learning opposites also improve their general understanding of language and words.

Teaching students of class 3 opposite words is an important part of learning the English language. Through this, grade 3 kids gain a better understanding of the things around them and improve their language skills. However, teaching them opposite words can be tricky for parents and teachers. Here are a few interesting ways to teach opposite words to children:
- Flashcards – Flashcards with words and representational pictures are the best tools to teach young kids. Showing the flashcards and then explaining the opposite words can make them better understand and memorise opposite words. For example- a flashcard with a small and big toy can be used to teach children the opposite words ‘big’ and ‘small’. Or a flashcard with pictures of a thin and fat animal can be used to teach the opposite words ‘thin’ and ‘fat’.
- Movements/Actions – Sometimes, opposite words can be better demonstrated with the help of activities or actions. Some verbs, such as go or stop, cannot be explained through flashcards. Parents and teachers can use actions or movements to demonstrate the meaning of such action words. For example, to explain the concept of stand and sit, parents can use a chair for sitting on it and getting up while emphasising the words sit and stand. Similarly, for movement words such as ‘stop and go,’ parents can make the child walk and then ask them to stop and then tell them to go again. Through these action demonstrations, kids will better understand opposite words.
- Opposite word questions and quizzes – Parents can give quizzes or questions to kids to solve to test their opposite word knowledge. They can take printouts of quizzes and ask the child to do them. Then check their child’s knowledge and teach them the words they got wrong.
- Opposite word games – Another enjoyable way to help kids learn opposite words is by making them play opposite word games. These games can be either played verbally, or by using flashcards. The parent can say a word, and the kid needs to find the opposite of the word among the things in the room or in the flashcards.
- Dumb charades – An interesting dumb charades game is also a fun way to teach opposite words. In this game, a kid needs to act out the opposite word, and their team members have to guess the word. Parents can make two teams of kids and give each team a word, and a kid from one team needs to act out the opposite of the given word. The team that guesses the maximum number of words is the winner.
Learning opposite words is important for kids at an early age to help them understand the correct usage of words. It is helpful not only in their everyday lives but also helps them perform well in their academics.
