This committee is made up of professors and industry professionals who are experts in the field of computer science. They will use your personal statement to determine whether or not you’re a good fit for their program.

Usually, the admission review process includes several rounds, and your computer science personal statement will be read by multiple members of the admissions committee.

How long should my computer science personal statement be?

What should I do after I have my first draft?

After you have completed the first draft of your computer science personal statement, you should follow these steps to edit, polish, and finalize your computer science personal statement:

“My undergraduate studies have allowed me to acquire a wealth of calculus, statistics and data science knowledge, giving me a solid foundation for studying machine learning and algorithmic solutions. I have also accumulated a comprehensive understanding of the development and application of software engineering through the practice of quantitative analysis. In the Information Systems for Accountants module, I significantly improved my programming skills, progressing from writing a mini-game via PyGame to a stock crawler’s web version based on HTML, CSS and JavaScript before finally constructing a framework with Django.

These accomplishments have encouraged my constant exploration of programming and software development and thoroughly prepared me for the challenges of graduate study. To update my understanding of the real-world application of computer science, I participated in a software development project focusing on intelligent analysis, evaluation and employee validation led by Professor Marks at the Western University of Mining and Technology. I created a knowledge base that recognised numerous work roles and responsibilities. It isn’t always made explicitly relevant to the course, and it would be more effective to make some direct links with exactly how this would be of value to this postgraduate qualification, but the connections are implicit and impressive.

The writer then goes on to further emphasise their suitability for the course by including essential references to research and independent learning. By mentioning a specific study and supervisor, the personal statement is given some depth and detail, and the aspects discussed show a depth and range of knowledge applicable to the course. The writer also talks about the value of what was studied – the benefit of what they’ve learned – in addition to the objective skills developed.

If I were to be critical, it’s worth mentioning that this reads a little like a list, and just doesn’t explicitly justify why these skills and experiences make them a suitable candidate.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 1

“Benefiting from my programming and data processing experience, I gained industry experience in real estate valuation during my internship at the Maxim Real Estate Development Co. I carried out initial modelling using Excel, but adding an increasingly complex array of formulas made the process inefficient and cumbersome. To overcome this obstacle, I created a model in Python, which allowed me to complete the valuation by inputting code directly into the model, streamlining my process. I have cultivated my automation mindset by writing a script to deliver charts and tables to fixed positions when creating PowerPoint slides and automatically managing quarterly financial statements. These challenges improved my computing competence and prompted me to reflect on the advantages of utilising coding and programming in the financial industry. Importantly, I realised that expertise in computer science improves efficiency across an array of diverse disciplines, furthering my determination to study Computer Science at graduate level and develop my professional versatility and employability as a result.”

A relatively descriptive and straightforward paragraph, but positive and relevant in content. It’s critical to discuss relevant employment or internship experiences and to identify relevant skills gained, which this writer does well.

They mention a good range of skills, both technical and transferable, and show a positive approach to the application of knowledge in real-world settings, which is important in a postgraduate statement.

The writer illustrates how they overcame challenges, and this is a valuable technique as it shows they have dynamic and problem-solving skills. It also provides evidence of success within a relevant activity, encouraging the reader to view the applicant in a positive light.

The final section links the applicant’s experience with the motivation for further study and professional ambitions, which allows the reader to see the application as one element in a strategic journey. This gives them the confidence that the applicant has made the right decision in their application and makes it more likely that the reader will make an offer, as they can see the logical progression from the past through the present and into the future.

When the reader sees that the applicant has a thorough understanding of the course and that their ambitions connect precisely with the modules on offer.

They also confidently outline their abilities and illustrate convincingly that they are a suitable candidate. This is sometimes lacking in personal statements, as applicants find it hard to write about themselves confidently without sounding boastful. It’s critical that you do this, however, as by outlining your relevant achievements in a clear and objective way, you add to your suitability.

The writer then outlines a personal connection with the course and mentions the value that they would bring to the faculty. This is important, as universities are looking for students who bring individuality, purpose and value to their organisation.

This is a strong personal statement that outlines skills and experiences in a relevant way. I would suggest that there could be more technical content and greater evidence of academic research to add to their suitability as a postgraduate student.

Example Computer Science Personal Statement

My first experiences with mathematics throughout school were always enjoyable but not inspiring. While I loved working with maths, and enjoyed representing our school in both the UKMT and Hans Woyda team competitions, I felt that maths could not be the end-in-itself the school syllabus presented it as. As I progressed through secondary education, however, I began to really see it as the powerful tool to understand and structure reality that it is.

The first time I saw that my interpretation of the use of maths had some substance was during a work experience placement I organised at IMSO (International Mobile Satellite Organization). There I encountered some examples of the mathematical and computing problems involved in working with satellites: from the difference between the Euclidean geometry on a map and the Elliptical geometry on a globe, to the logistics of moving satellites around to meet demand while keeping them in orbit. These were problems that demanded much more than mere number crunching, and being exposed to this gave me a taste of what maths beyond school might involve. A second work experience spell at Siemens provided me a much more in-depth view of the important role that communication systems play in keeping a company running efficiently and effectively.

My passion for mathematics and computing was further extended while reading ‘The Magical Maze’ by Ian Stewart. The description of maths as the exploration of a maze of our own creation had an incredibly profound effect on my understanding of what research in mathematics involves. What interested me especially was the visual part of resolving problems, so that they did not rely completely on resolving long calculations. This was close to how I like to understand and explain my ideas in mathematics.

Douglas Hofstadter’s ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach’ gave me a much deeper understanding of the axiomatic systems that make up maths and how parallels can be drawn between different subjects to gain a further understanding of them all. Connected by the theme of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, the author passes through seemingly unrelated topics, such as the problem of consciousness and the mathematics of Zen principles, to explain the theorem. Although not the focus of the book, I have also enjoyed reading the links that are presented between maths and computing; it seems to me that maths is not just related to computing – computing is the physical manifestation of mathematics.

Maths and computing are about describing mental processes in a precise, logical way. The rigour required for mathematical proof leaves little room for subjectivity: something can be proven, disproven or unproven, but this depends completely on the validity of your logic. The idea of being able to extract order from apparent chaos, working through concepts until they click is what I love about these subjects, and what has attracted me to take those as an integral part of my further education.

However passionate I am about my academic studies, I also enjoy being involved in extracurricular activities. As head of mentoring and a prefect, I have improved my organizational abilities working with staff and mentors in developing study programmes for those students requiring extra help. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award – now working on the silver award – has allowed me to practice and develop my leadership and teamwork skills.

In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, skiing and swimming; the latter I practice at competition level. I also love travelling, as having spent my childhood in Denmark, Egypt, United Kingdom and Spain has given me a hunger for mixing with different cultures. I like to unwind by playing the piano – I find that the pleasure one derives from making a piece your own is one that few activities can match.

I am thrilled about the prospect of further study in these subjects with some of the leading professors in the fields, and look forward to participating in university life.

This is a well-written, structured statement. The student explains their reasons to pursue a dual-honours degree and gives equal attention to both disciplines to which they are applying. The student adds personality to the statement by thoroughly explaining their own views on all of the examples of literature read around maths and computing.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

There are quite a lot of short paragraphs. The student could have saved space by consolidating some paragraphs into one, hence shortening the statement. The student starts three paragraphs with ‘My’ or ‘In my’. This is quite repetitive. There are too many paragraphs, seven in total. Paragraphs five and six could be shortened and grouped into one paragraph. In the third paragraph, it appears as though the student has either forgotten to add an addition space (in order to start a new paragraph) or has incorrectly started a new line for the sentence ‘Douglas Hofstadter’s…’.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

This is a very good statement. The student has clearly achieved a lot and writes in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Attention is given to both maths and computer sciences, which is essential as the student is applying for a dual honours course. With some restructuring, this could be an excellent statement.

This Personal Statement for Computer Science is a great example of how to tackle applying to two different degrees or dual honours. The candidate’s interest and achievements are clearly shown which is vital to Admissions Tutors.

Personal statements for postgraduate applications

A well-crafted Masters personal statement is the key to convincing admissions tutors that you deserve a place on a postgraduate course. Discover the dos and don'ts of writing a personal statement and take a look at some examples for inspiration

What is a personal statement?

'We certainly find the personal statement an essential part of the application process,' says Helen Hayes, assistant registrar (postgraduate and non-standard admissions) at Aberystwyth University.

A Masters personal statement is a piece of writing that you submit as part of your postgraduate application . It's your first real chance to sell yourself to the university and to demonstrate to admissions tutors that you're right for the course.

It's likely that you've already written a personal statement for your Bachelors degree , so this should give you some idea of what to expect. However, don't be tempted to use your undergraduate personal statement as a template. You will have progressed academically since then and admissions tutors will want to see evidence of this.

Your postgraduate personal statement should be unique and tailored to the course that you're applying to. Use the opportunity to show off your academic interests and abilities, and to demonstrate that the programme will benefit from your attendance as much as you'll benefit from studying it.

'From an admissions officer perspective, given that we have to read a large number of personal statements, we are always keen to see enthusiasm, interest and passion for the subject emanating off the page,' adds Helen.

How long should a postgraduate personal statement be?

A Masters personal statement should be around 500 words. This equates to one side of A4. However, some universities require more, often two sides. Some institutions also set a character limit instead of a specific word count, so it's important that you check the application guidelines before starting to write your statement.

As they're relatively short in nature, don't waste words on autobiographical information. This isn't necessary in postgraduate personal statements. Instead, focus on why you want to study a particular programme and your potential to successfully complete the course.

What should I include in a Masters personal statement?

You should tailor your personal statement to fit the course you're applying for, so what to include will largely depend on the course requirements. However, in general you should write about:

Your reasons for applying for a particular programme and why you deserve a place above other candidates - discuss your academic interests, career goals and the university and department's reputation, and write about which aspects of the course you find most appealing, such as modules or work experience opportunities. Show that you're ready for the demands of postgraduate life by demonstrating your passion, knowledge and experience.
Your preparation - address how undergraduate study has prepared you for a postgraduate course, mentioning your independent work (e.g. dissertation) and topics that most interested you.
Evidence of your skillset - highlight relevant skills and knowledge that will enable you to make an impact on the department, summarising your abilities in core areas including IT, numeracy, organisation, communication, time management and critical thinking. You can also cover any grades, awards, work placements, extra readings or conferences that you've attended and how these have contributed to your readiness for Masters study.
Your goals - explain your career aspirations and how the course will help you achieve them. 'Describe how studying your chosen course fits in with your long-term ambitions and career path,' advises Helen.

Address any clear weaknesses, such as lower-than-expected module performance in your undergraduate degree or gaps in your education history. The university will want to know about these, so explain them with a positive spin. 'We look for positive reflection in situations like this,' explains Helen. 'Cover how things have been addressed and what will be different in your proposed postgraduate studies.'

How should I structure my personal statement?

Your personal statement should follow a logical, methodical structure, where each paragraph follows on from the one before. Make sure paragraphs are short, succinct, clear and to the point. Remember, you only have 500 words to use.

Capture the reader's attention with an enthusiastic introduction covering why you want to study a particular Masters. Then, engage the reader in your middle paragraphs by summing up your academic and employment background, evidencing your knowledge and skills and demonstrating why the course is right for you.

Your conclusion should be concise, summarising why you're the ideal candidate. Overall, aim for five or six paragraphs. You can use headings to break up the text if you prefer.

The majority of postgraduate applications are submitted online directly to the university. If this is the case, present your personal statement in a standard font such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, text size 11 or 12. If your course application is submitted through UKPASS (UCAS's postgraduate application service) font style won't matter, as personal statements are automatically formatted.

How can I write a good postgraduate personal statement?

Give yourself plenty of time and don't rush . Your personal statement can make or break your application so it needs to be perfect. Tutors can tell if you're bluffing, and showing yourself up as uninformed could be costly. Before you start, read the rules and guidelines provided, check the selection criteria and research the course and institution.
The best personal statements adopt a positive, enthusiastic and professional tone and are presented in clear, short sentences . Avoid elaborate or overly complicated phrases. Unless otherwise stated, all postgraduate personal statements should be written in English and your spelling, grammar and punctuation must be spot on, as the personal statement acts as a test of your written communication ability.
Don't use the same supporting statement for every course . Admissions tutors can spot copy-and-paste jobs. Generic applications demonstrate that you have little understanding of the course. In order to stand out from the crowd, Masters personal statements must be unique and specific to the course and institution.
Draft and redraft your statement until you're happy . Then ask a friend, family member or careers adviser to read it. Proofreading is incredibly important to avoid mistakes. Memorise what you've written before any interviews.

What do I need to avoid?

use your undergraduate UCAS application as a template
be negative
lie or exaggerate
use clichés, gimmicks, humour, over-used words such as 'passion' or Americanisms
include inspirational quotes
make pleading/begging statements
needlessly flatter the organisation
include irrelevant course modules, personal facts or extra-curricular activities
namedrop key authors without explanation
use overly long sentences
repeat information found elsewhere in your application
leave writing your personal statement to the last minute.

How should I start my Masters personal statement?

Try not to waste too much time coming up with a catchy opening. The more you try, the more contrived you'll sound and the more likely you are to fall into the trap of using clichés.

Avoid using overused phrases, such as:

For as long as I can remember…
From a young age…
I am applying for this course because…
Throughout my life I have always enjoyed…
I have always been interested in…
I have always been passionate about…
I have always wanted to pursue a career in…
Reflecting on my educational experiences…

Admissions tutors read hundreds of applications per course so the opening paragraph of your personal statement needs to get straight to the point and make a real impact. Avoid overkill statements, gimmicks and popular quotes.

If you're really struggling, come back and tackle the opening once you have written the rest.

How should I end my personal statement?

Conclusions should be short, sharp and memorable, and leave no doubt in an admissions tutor's mind that you deserve a place on a course.

The perfect ending should pull all of your key points together without waffling or repeating yourself.

Like the rest of your Masters personal statement, keep the ending simple. Be succinct and make it clear why you'll be an asset to the university and end on a positive note, with a statement about why the institution would be lucky to have you as a student.

What are admissions tutors are looking for?

an explanation of how the course links your past and future
an insight into your academic and non-academic abilities, and how they'll fit with the course
evidence of your skills, commitment and enthusiasm
knowledge of the institution's area of expertise
reasons why you want to study at the institution
demonstrable interest in the subject, perhaps including some academic references or readings.

The style and content of your postgraduate personal statement depends on several variables, such as the type of qualification that you're applying for - such as a Masters degree , a conversion course or teacher training . Here are some postgraduate personal statement templates to help you get started:

Business management personal statement

Postgraduate courses in business management are popular among graduates. To make your application stand out your personal statement needs to cover your motivations for choosing a specific course at a particular university, your career goals and how the Masters will help you achieve them. Be sure to mention relevant transferrable skills and work experience, even extra-curricular activities count. Read up on management courses .

Computer science personal statement

If you'd like to complete a Masters but studied an unrelated subject at undergraduate level you'll need to explain why you'd like to change disciplines. In the case of computer science your personal statement will need to show that you possess the technical, mathematical and analytical skills necessary, as well as demonstrate your knowledge of the subject area. Law personal statement

You'll apply for an LLM the same way you would for any other Masters, directly to the university. The course that I’m looking to pursue is MSc Computer Science at York St John University (YSJU). By studying this course, I will be able to gain invaluable in-depth and practical knowledge which will help me in starting a successful career. Moreover, getting the opportunity to study in this university will help me advance both professionally and academically. In addition, the opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice will benefit me to enhance my skills and knowledge and to achieve a deeper understanding of the field of programming, database systems, software engineering, computer architecture and networks.

According to my research I have found that the MSc Computer Science develops future leaders who can bring data skills and insight to their profession. After reading through the modules and the learning outcome of the MSc Computer Sciencecourse, I have realized that they are conceptually invigorating and very contemporary. By studying this course, I will be able to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant for pursuing a rewarding career within a globally data driven environment. Moreover, the course helps students become self-sufficient, by helping students build self-direction and personal development. A self-sufficient student is always a valuable addition to a society and economy. As I want to explore my career in software development positions, completing this course will put me in a favourable position in terms of the software research and development market. As of the moment, I am interested in learning all the related skills and knowledge from this course. For this reason, this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

Following the completion of mySenior School Certificate Examination, I studied Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Enugu State University of Science, Enugu, Nigeria in 2021. Since my graduation, I have been researching on the various computer related higher education courses both in the UK and other English-speaking countries. After much research, I have found this course at York St John University to be a perfect fit to both my previous education, as well as my future career goals I have. My previous course and my interest in this subjectwill be complementary to my prospective study since my existing knowledge in the field through my bachelor’s degreemeans I will be able to better understand the concepts of the course. These are the things which have motivated me to pursue this course at York St John University. If I can successfully complete this course, it will create a platform to pursue different career opportunities in Nigeria and establish my career as a Senior Software Architect in a leading tech company, such as 9Mobile, Google Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria.

I am determined to study this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we only have the opportunity to study with local students. Studying computer science is an exciting life-changing experience, offering me the opportunity to discover the important strategies, used in the computing sector. A strategy is extremely crucial to progress in computer science. What makes computer science so interesting is it has a huge impact on the entire World. In this digital age, every industry that exists requires a computer scientist. Problems with industries are often solved by computers. Resolving these issues requires people that can pay attention to detail and luckily I possess this skill. This suggests that my character is effortlessly suited to a career in computer science.

Currently, I am studying A levels in Maths, Economics and Chemistry. All these subjects have given me a strong knowledge foundation for a degree in computer science. Studying Maths has given me a logical way of addressing real-life problems. For example, using probability to predict the outcome of any situation. While studying Economics, my self-confidence and communication skills have flourished. Constantly having to convert my complex economics models into qualitative data and present it to my whole class. Chemistry has developed my research skills, which I believe will come in handy when studying in University.

For my year twelve work experience, I worked for a small laptop and computer repair business, where I helped fix the laptops and computers. I found it so fascinating and interesting to see computers work and how essential they are to individuals and businesses. I am a member of the Codeacademy and Udacity website and a frequent reader of the Computer World. Doing this allows me to improve my programming and coding skills, getting familiar with the programming language and keep up to date with current affairs in the computing world and gain knowledge from respected computer scientists. Recently, I attended a Computer Science taster course at London South Bank University . This taster course amplified my passion for studying Computer Science at University.

Helping out at Parents Evening and Open Days by registering and ushering the parents and providing tours around the school to parents and potential students who have taken a liking to the school. This provides clear evidence that I am a dedicated team player. Taking advantage of all opportunities that my sixth form provided.

I currently have a part-time job, working as a customer service assistant. Working in Waitrose is developing my numeracy skills through handling cash and balancing the tills at the end of the day to check we are meeting targets by carefully counting all the cash in the till. Spending time on the till has improved my computer skills.

In my leisure time, I enjoy swimming. Travelling is also a passion of mine, so far I have visited countries in Europe, Middle East , Asia and Africa. I plan on visiting different countries across the world as I am quite fond of exploring different cultures. I am a teaching assistant at the Sunday school in my church, my responsibilities are helping the teachers to plan lessons and managing the behaviour of the children. Trying my best to help others when I'm presented with an opportunity to. I peer mentor young students between the ages of eleven and fifteen. Giving me an opportunity to be a positive role model and develop and maintain relationships with the young students.

Computer science is essential as it plays a huge role in everybody's lives. I am excited to broaden my understanding of computer science. My experiences in life have shaped and prepared me to study Computer Science at University.

My programming, information systems and data communications experiences in Higher computing and Advanced Higher Computing have since further convinced me that I would particularly enjoy studying computer science at degree level. At University I look forward to gaining a further, more advanced knowledge of these topics as well as learning about new, exciting subjects in addition

I have recently returned from a five week expedition from the south to the north coast of Australia. The expedition was organised through 'World Challenge' as part of their 'Team Challenge' programme. World Challenge pride themselves in giving young people 'education for life' through allowing themto plan, fundraise and organise for their own expedition.

As a team of fourteen pupils, we raised our own expedition fees by organising various successful events and trained for expedition life together as well as individually.

Whilst on expedition, we learned valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility of a budget, effective communication within the team and with those around us and most importantly, we learned how to be independent. The expedition was a valuable life experience for me which I will remember and cherish for a very long time

As a school prefect I hold several responsibilities such as helping with and organising school events, watching over and looking out for younger pupils and serving in the school tuck shop.

I also take part in the school 'buddy' system which involves mentoring several allocated first year pupils and helping them get used to secondary school. I am also involved in the school 'paired reading' program for first year pupils who struggle to keep up with their classmates in reading. Helping in first and second classrooms is also very rewarding

As chairperson of the school pupil council, I have the responsibility of listening to the pupils of the school, discussing their ideas with the rest of the pupil council, communicating these ideas with the senior management team and then putting the ideas into practice. The aim of the pupil council is to create the kind of school that the pupils want and will hopefully enjoy attending

Throughout the past view years; I have been involved in several voluntary activities. I used to volunteer several hours a week in a Barnardos charity shop in my local town.

This taught me skills in dealing with people, organisation and responsibility. This was before I started devoting my time to helping out at my local riding school. I have always had a passion for horses and riding, and this gave me the chance to put use my interests for something positive.

My experience at the riding school involved dealing with all kinds of personalities, working with children and working under pressure in order to finish the daily tasks in time. I eventually moved on to working as a part-time horse groom at the weekends.

I have since begun weekend work in a busy retail clothes shop. At the present time, I spend several hours a week volunteering in Campsie View School, a local primary and secondary school for children and young adults with learning disabilities. Working in the school is extremely enjoyable but also very rewarding and requires enthusiasm, patience and a lot of energy

As a sixth year pupil, I am very much looking forward to university life. I feel that I have a lot to offer to and gain from university. I very much enjoy to participate in groups and events and I feel this may be an asset for me throughout my time at university.
