Admission Session 2022-2023

Doctoral studies are organized in the following research fields of the doctoral schools authorized to function: Philology, Theology, Biology, Medicine, Dentistry, History, Mathematics and Civil Engineering.

The duration of a doctoral studies program is usually of three years, exception being made by the doctoral studies program in the field of medicine, which lasts for four years. The duration is counted from the date of enrollment to the date of the public defense of the thesis.

Doctoral studies are organized on the basis of a contract between the doctoral student, the doctoral supervisor, the Doctoral School, and UOC.

  • International citizens from EU/EEA/CH countries are entitled to apply under the same conditions, in terms of admissions process and study fees, as Romanian citizensif they are granted the Certificate of Recognition for the previous studies by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research.

Since the Study Recognition Certificate is mandatory, the admissions process has more steps:

  • Candidates will upload all the requested documents in pdf or jpeg format, as mentioned in the list of necessary documents hereinbelow, to the on-line platform ( https://admitere.univ-ovidius.ro/ ), at the international students section.
  • Department for International Students staff will check the application files for completion and validate the complete ones. Candidates whose files are incomplete will receive a guidance message meant to help them complete their files.
  • For candidates who do not have a Study Recognition Certificate, the Department for International Students will forward the list of candidates and their files to the competent departments of the Romanian Ministry of Education (CNRED) for the issuance of the Study Recognition Certificate (Atestat).
  • After the Study Recognition Certificate is issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education, candidates shall contact Doctoral School in order for them to register for the admission session and participate at the exams organized (if necessary)

***Candidates will periodically check the university website or will contact the Department for International Students at the following e-mail addresses: [email protected] or [email protected]   to obtain information in regards to the issuance of the Study Recognition Certificate.

***Candidates who already own the Study Recognition Certificate shall register for the admission contest at the Secretary office of the Institute of Doctoral Studies, according to their admission calendar.

*** Candidates that have been admitted and granted the Study Recognition Certificate by the Romanian Ministry of Education must contact the Doctoral School in order to complete their application process. (exam if necessary, enrollment, etc)

  • International citizens from non-EU/EEA/CH countries need a Letter of Acceptance issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education.
  • Candidates will upload all the requested documents in pdf or jpeg format, as mentioned in the list of necessary documents hereinbelow, to the on-line platform (https://admitere.univ-ovidius.ro/), at the international students section.
  • The Department for International Students staff will check the application files for completion and validate the complete ones. Candidates whose files are incomplete will receive a guidance message meant to help them complete their files.
  • Validates files will be analyzed by the admission committee of the Institute of Doctoral Studies
  • The admission committee of the Institute of Doctoral Studies will issue the list of eligible candidates
  • Files of eligible candidates will be submitted by the Department for International Students to the competent departments of the Romanian Ministry of Education (DGRIAE) for the issuance of the Acceptance Letter.
  • If the Ministry of Education/DGRIAE requests any additional documents in order to issue the Acceptance Letter, it is the exclusive obligation of the candidate to complete the file in due time and by failing to do so, the candidate`s file will automatically be cancelled.
  • After the Acceptance Letters are issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education, candidates shall register for the admission contest.

All files shall be uploaded to the on-line platform ( https://admitere.univ-ovidius.ro/ ) at the international students section.

Candidates need a scanner or high quality photo device (phone, camera, tablet) in order to upload the requested documents.

Attention , all uploaded documents must be legible (easy to read, use capital letters!).

In order to apply for PhD studies , candidates must upload the documents mentioned in the list below to the on-line platform ( https://admitere.univ-ovidius.ro/ ) at the international students section.

  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the master degree diploma or, for 2022 graduates, copy and notarized translation of the master degree certificate which contains the same grades and information that are to be included in the final master degree diploma, certified by the relevant authority of the issuing country (please see below the Very Important info)
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the master degree transcript
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the bachelor degree diploma certified by the relevant authority of the issuing country (please see below the Very Important info)
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the bachelor degree transcript
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the high school diploma or equivalent diploma certified by the relevant authority of the issuing country (please see below the Very Important info)
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the high school transcript for all years of high school
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the birth certificate
  • Copy and notarized Romanian translation of the marriage certificate (for married candidates who have changed their names after marriage) or any other document certifying a name change
  • A certificate of competence in a largely-circulated foreign language, issued by the Department of foreign languages of ​​UOC, no earlier than two years prior to the admission examination (except for the candidates who have graduated a single or double specialization in a foreign language, clearly mentioned on the graduation diploma, or who have obtained an internationally recognized certificate of competence in a foreign language B2 level, at least ( http://en.univ-ovidius.ro/academics/doctoral-programmes )/Romanian language proficiency certificate issued by Romanian institutions recognized by the Romanian Ministry of Education with minimum accepted level B1 or Romanian Language Preparatory Year Diploma
  • Copy of the medical certificate (issued in a largely-circulated foreign language) stating that the candidate is medically fit for the domain or study program which he is applying for
  • Passport size photo
  • Copy of passport (pages 1-4)
  • Copy of a document stating the candidate’s address outside Romania (driver’s license, id, etc.)
  • Application form for the issuance of the Acceptance Letter
  • Application form for international citizens (shall be generated automatically upon application)
  • Declaration regarding the documents submitted in the application file
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) form
  • Own liability statement regarding the authenticity and correspondence between the digital/scanned documents uploaded to the platform and the original documents
  • Application Letter for the Doctoral Supervisor’s provisional agreement
  • Proof of file processing fee and application fee (the fee shall be paid at BCR bank and the invoice shall be scanned and uploaded to the platform)

VERY IMPORTANT

N.B. Before uploading the documents to the on-line platform, the candidate must first obtain the following stamps on all original diplomas as well as all original transcripts (as requested by the Romanian Ministry of Education https://www.cnred.edu.ro/ ):

HAGUE APOSTIL (by the competent authorities in the issuing country). Study documents issued by Greece, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus, will hold the Hague Apostil, the rest of the EU member states being exempted.

For the states that are NOT a part of the Hague Convention, study documents must be accompanied by an authenticity statement issued by the competent authorities in the issuing country or

  • Authentication made by the Ministry of External Affairs in the issuing country, Romanian Embassy or Consular Office in the issuing country & Ministry of External Affairs in Romania
  • Authentication made by the Ministry of External Affairs in the issuing country, Embassy / Consular Office of the country in Romania & Ministry of External Affairs in Romania
  • For countries where there is no Romanian Embassy/Consular Office nor do they have an Embassy/Consular Office in Romania the study documents shall hold the stamp of the Ministry of Education & External Affairs in the issuing country
  • Exemption from authentication is allowed in accordance with the law, based on an international treaty that Romania is a part of, or based on reciprocity. Please revise the below link: ( https://cnred.edu.ro/ro/lista-statelor-pentru-care-se-solicită-apostilarea-sau-supralegalizarea )
  • Diplomas issued by Moldova do not need any authentication. Diplomas issued before 2008 as well as diplomas that cannot be verified through the official portal, will have to be accompanied by an original authenticity statement issued by the Ministry of Education of Moldova.

FINAL STEP – REGISTRATION

  • Admitted candidates shall enroll according the admission calendar, no later than the beginning of the academic year.
  • The enrollment as well as the tuition fee shall be paid after the lists of admitted candidates are posted on the website.
  • The Study contract shall be signed at your arrival in Romania;
  • All original documents (original school documents and original authorized translations) are compulsory and will be submitted to the secretary office of the Institute of Doctoral Studies upon enrollment otherwise, the admission process will automatically be cancelled, with no refund of the file processing and application fees;
  • In case of proven forgery, all rights granted through admission shall be lost and all payments towards the University are non refundable.

Candidates from EU, EEA (and CH) countries:

About the scholarships

Each year, the Romanian Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provides a number of scholarships to citizens from non-EU countries. Only candidates having good results in education, respectively an average of the study years, for the last graduated school, of at least 7 (seven) corresponding to the scoring system in Romania or the Good score, as the case, are eligible. For further details regarding the eligibility conditions, please check Programme information . Applicants may select their study program of interest in all fields, with the exception of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy. For Bachelor and Master, only study programs in Romanian are available, thus promoting the Romanian language and culture. However, at PhD level, applicants can also opt for a program in English or a foreign language set by the doctoral school. A preparatory year in Romanian is also granted prior to enrolling in the study program of choice, for those not speaking Romanian. The required documents include diplomas, transcripts, birth certificate and passport, CV – all described in the application process. Applications can be submitted only via the online platform, between 16 January 2024 and 16 March 2024, with the selection results being announced around 15 July 2024. Upon selection, additional formalities, such as obtaining a visa, will be required.

Scholarships for studies in accredited higher education institutions in Romania are awarded through a competition of files based on the regulations in force, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ministry of Education (ME).

To whom is it addressed?

Foreign citizens from all non-EU countries , with the following exceptions:

  • citizens of Romanian origin or who are part of the Romanian historical communities in the proximity of Romania (entitled to different scholarship programmes);
  • citizens who have requested or acquired a form of protection in Romania;
  • stateless persons whose stay on the territory of Romania is officially recognized according to the law;
  • members of the diplomatic and consular corps or family members of the diplomatic and consular corps accredited to Romania;
  • members of the administrative and technical staff of diplomatic missions and consular offices accredited to Romania;
  • staff members of international organizations based in Romania or family members of staff of international organizations based in Romania;
  • beneficiaries of a scholarship from the Romanian state for the same cycle of study.

Who qualifies?

To be eligible, the scholarship applicant must:

  • submit a complete file;
  • present study documents issued by accredited/recognized education institutions in the country where they were issued;
  • comply with the enrolment deadline;
  • have good results in education, respectively an average of the study years, for the last graduated school of at least 7 (seven) corresponding to the scoring system in Romania or the "Good" score, as the case;
  • comply with the application submission methodology.

Please note that scholarships are NOT awarded in the fields of MEDICINE, DENTAL MEDICINE and PHARMACY .

What level of study does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship applicant can choose from any of the following three study cycles in accredited higher education institutions in Romania:

  • bachelor’s degree: bachelor’s degree programmes are addressed to graduates of high school studies or pre-university studies at the end of which they obtained a baccalaureate degree or equivalent, as well as candidates applying for further university studies in Romania. The complete programme runs for a period of 3-6 years, depending on the specialization followed and ends with a bachelor's exam;
  • master’s degree: master’s degree programmes are addressed to undergraduates, run for a period of 1 year, 1.5 years or 2 years and end with the dissertation exam; 
  • PhD: doctoral programmes are addressed to graduate students or equivalent and run for a period of 3-5 years, depending on the profile of the chosen faculty and end with the presentation of a PhD thesis. In order to be admitted to doctoral studies and to obtain the scholarship, it is compulsory that, prior to submitting the application, the candidate should get the written agreement of the Doctoral Tutor, which must be a member of the doctoral school, and also that he/she passes the admission interview.

  What is the language of study?

In order to promote the Romanian language and culture, the beneficiaries of the scholarships granted by the Romanian state for undergraduate and master`s studies study only in Romanian . The exception is doctoral scholarship holders, who can opt for studies in Romanian or in a foreign language set by the doctoral school . For candidates who do not speak Romanian, a preparatory year is granted for the study of the Romanian language prior to the actual university studies, with the exception of doctoral scholarship holders who have opted for the form of education in a foreign language set by the doctoral school.

The following categories of persons are exempted from enrolling in the Romanian language preparatory year: 

  • those who present Romanian study documents (diplomas or certificates) or study documents, school records attesting at least four consecutive years of studies attended in Romanian in an educational unit/institution from the Romanian national system;
  • those who, in order to enrol in university education, pass the Romanian language test, organized according to the regulations in force;
  • those who, in order to enrol in university education, present a certificate of linguistic competence in Romanian, minimum level B1, issued according to the regulations in force.

The scholarship application can be sent ONLY through the Study in Romania platform. Candidates can access the platform at https://studyinromania.gov.ro , via the Apply for MFA scholarships button , or directly at https://scholarships.studyinromania.gov.ro . The platform can be accessed both in English and French. REJECTED : Applications submitted directly by the applicants to the registry offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Education, or to the e-mail addresses of the MFA employees / departments of the MFA Headquarters, or to the Romanian diplomatic missions or the foreign diplomatic missions accredited in Bucharest, will not be taken into consideration.

Documents required to complete the file

Each candidate will create an account on the Study in Romania platform, will fill in the requested data and upload the following documents:

3.1. Copies of the diplomas obtained (baccalaureate diploma or its equivalent, plus bachelor's, master's, doctorate degree, if applicable) and their authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable. 3.2. Copies of transcripts of the completed studies and their authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable. 3.3. Copy of the birth certificate (or equivalent document) and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable. 3.4. Copy of the first three pages of the passport or of the national document of identity and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable. 3.5. Curriculum Vitae in English or French. 3.6. For the doctoral cycle, the candidate needs to submit a letter of intent containing the list of scientific works, specialized publications, the detailed description of the proposed research project, as well as the agreement of a tutor, which must be a member of the chosen doctoral school. Both documents must be written in English, French or Romanian.

The application will also include the following documents (only for candidates who belong to the specific category mentioned for each document):

  • Copy of the proof of name change (if applicable) and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable.
  • Copy of the certificate proving the passing of the baccalaureate, bachelor's or master's exam, as the case may be, for graduates who do not hold yet the diploma and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable.
  • Copy of the certificate proving that the person in the final year of studies is to take the graduation exam at the end of the school/university year and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable.
  • Copy of the transcript attesting the academic record of the person in the final year of studies, until the moment of submitting the application file, and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable.
  • Copy of the certificate of completion of the Romanian language preparatory year or the certificate of linguistic competence, if applicable.
  • Copy of the notarized declaration of parental consent in the case of candidates who have not reached the age of 18 by the date of commencement of the courses and the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable.

The documents must be scanned individually, after the original, in .pdf format.

For the candidate’s registration to be valid, he must express his consent to the agreement for the processing of personal data by signing the GDPR declaration.

For admitted students, the Ministry of Education will issue a “Letter of acceptance for studies in Romania”, which will mention the obligation (where applicable) to complete a Romanian language preparatory year and the higher education institution(s) where the studies will take place.

  • The original of Letter of acceptance will be sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the university.
  • The “Letter of acceptance for studies in Romania” is required in order to obtain a long-stay visa and for the enrolment. The students will be able to download a scanned copy.
  • If the candidate university option cannot be honoured, the Ministry of Education reserves the right to propose to the candidate an alternative in the same field of study, subject to the availability of higher education institutions in Romania. Subsequent requests  for a change  of the field of study, respectively/or of the university, will not be taken into consideration. 
  • Upon receiving the letter of acceptance for studies with this alternative, the candidate is free to accept the scholarship or to give it up.
  • After receiving the letter of acceptance, the students will send electronically, through the platform, within the indicated term, a response regarding the acceptance/refusal of the scholarship, and in case of acceptance, will request a long study visa.
  • Also, in case of accepting the scholarship, the students has the obligation to contact the university to find out about the specific enrolment conditions (additional documents required, aptitude test, registration deadline etc.)

Scholarship beneficiaries are provided with the following facilities:

a) exemption from the payment of registration fees or any other fees required by application processing, testing for the Romanian language skills, taking the admission contest for doctoral studies and the specific aptitude tests; b) financing the tuition expenses for the Romanian language preparatory year; c) financing the tuition expenses for the actual studies, but not more than the duration of a university cycle, corresponding to the study programme followed; d) granting a monthly scholarship, for students enrolled in the Romanian language preparatory year; e) granting a monthly scholarship, for students enrolled in bachelor's, master's or doctoral studies, but not more than the duration of a university cycle; f) financing the accommodation expenses in the student dormitories, within the allocated subsidy granted through the budget of the Ministry of Education (accommodation will be provided to the extent of available places, scholarship holders having the obligation to contact the host university to find out the accommodation conditions); g) medical assistance in case of medical-surgical emergencies and diseases with endemic-epidemic potential, in accordance with the legislation in force; h) local public, ground, naval and underground transport, as well as domestic car, railway and naval transport, in the same conditions as those offered to Romanian students, according to the legal provisions. i) exemption from the payment of the study visa fee.

These facilities are granted throughout the study period, as follows:

  • for students enrolled in the Romanian language preparatory year, during its courses;
  • for students enrolled in bachelor's and master's studies, during the academic year and during the legal holidays, but not during the summer vacation. If students have to stay at the faculty during the summer vacation for curricular activities or if there are specific legal provisions, the rights are maintained during the summer vacation;
  • for doctoral students enrolled in full-time learning, throughout the calendar year;
  • another 30 days after completing university studies lasting at least 1 year.

Foreign citizens have the following obligations:

a) to respect the Romanian Constitution and the laws of the Romanian state; b) to comply with the internal regulations of the educational institution in which they study; c) to comply with the provisions of this methodology; d) to present at the time of enrolment at the university where they were accepted a medical certificate stating that he/she is fit for studies and free of contagious diseases, and its authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if appropriate.

In Romania, the academic year usually begins on October 1. Universities establish their own calendar, in accordance with the principle of university autonomy. Host universities may also decide on specific measures regarding the teaching and learning process, in accordance with the public health guidelines. Romanian authorities may impose additional public health requirements.

The scholarship obtained, including the preparatory year where applicable, consists of:

  • financing tuition fees;
  • financing the accommodation expenses in the dormitories, through the budget of the Ministry of Education, within the limit of the subsidy allocated for this purpose (accommodation will be provided to the extent of available places, scholarship holders having the obligation to contact the host university to find out the accommodation conditions);
  • granting a monthly financial aid, as follows: the equivalent in ”lei” (the Romanian currency) of the amount of 65 EURO, for undergraduate and the preparatory year students; the equivalent in ”lei” (the Romanian currency) of the amount of 75 EURO, for master students, the equivalent in ”lei” (the Romanian currency) of the amount of 85 EURO, for PhD students.

In order to be granted the monthly financial aid, students in the Romanian preparatory year, as well as those in the undergraduate and master's university programs, must obtain at the end of each academic year a number of 60 transferable credits.

Students in the preparatory year who did not obtain, at the end of the academic year, a number of 60 transferable credits, will be granted the opportunity of repeating upon request, only once, the preparatory year. During the repeat year, students will be granted tuition funding, but their monthly financial aid will be suspended.

According to the law and to the rules of the host university, students in university bachelor's and master's programs who did not obtain, at the end of the academic year, a number of 60 transferable credits, but the number of transferable credits they’ve got is enough for allowing them to progress to the next year of study, will no longer be granted the monthly financial aid. Nevertheless this can be reacquired during the following academic year, after getting all 60 transferable credits related to each completed academic year, provided that the number of years during which these rights are granted does not exceed the duration of the whole academic cycle.

According to the law and the rules of the host university, the financing of tuition expenses, the financing of accommodation expenses and the monthly financial aid shall not be provided anymore, if the students in the undergraduate and master's university programs did not get at the end of the academic year a number of transferable credits enough for ensuring them the progress into the next academic year, while scholarship and the financing of accommodation expenses are not provided, scholarship holders admitted to studies according to this  methodology will pay for their studies a fee in foreign currency, in the amount established in accordance with the provisions of Government Ordinance no. 22/2009, approved with amendments by Law no. 1/2010.

  • a complete file with the original documents from the application file; the host universities may request that all registration documents be accompanied by authenticated copies and legalized translations into Romanian;
  • a copy of the letter of acceptance for studies;
  • passport (original and copy) with a valid visa (long stay visa for studies) or a residence permit;
  • the medical certificate attesting that the student is free from contagious diseases or other diseases incompatible with the requested studies, as well as the authorized translation into English, French, Spanish or Romanian, if applicable;
  • other documents required by universities.

PhD Scholarships for International Students

Incoming mobility scheme for students to spend their undergraduate, graduate or doctoral studies in Romania. The Romanian government yearly offers scholarships for prospective students who wish to undertake undergraduate, graduate or doctoral studies in Romania. The scholarships are granted for three levels of study: a) for the first cycle (licenta): This scheme is dedicated to graduates of high schools or of equivalent pre-university systems, as well as to candidates who require the equivalent of partial studies and the continuation of their studies in Romania. The complete cycle of university studies lasts for 3 to 6 years, according to the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a final examination (licenta); b) for the 2nd cycle (master): This scheme is dedicated to graduates of university/post graduate studies; it lasts for 1,5 to 2 years and ends with a dissertation; c) for the 3rd cycle (doctorate) this scheme is dedicated to the graduates of university/postgraduate studies (i.e. master); it lasts for 3-4 years, in keeping with the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a doctor’s thesis.

Eligibility

Citizens of non EU countries (irrespective of their country of residence). Priority is given to citizens from non EU states with which Romania does not have cultural and education cooperation agreements. Mention should be made that foreign citizens of Romanian origin and those belonging to the neighboring historic Romanian communities benefit from other scholarship program offered by the Romanian state.

Priority fields: priority will be given to the candidates applying for: political and administrative sciences, education studies, Romanian culture and civilization, journalism, technical studies, oil and gas, agricultural studies, veterinary medicine, architecture, music, arts.

What is funded

-Free-of-charge tuition, -Free-of-charge accommodation (depending on availability, accommodation will be offered free-of-charge in students hostels, in keeping with the higher education regulations and within the limits of the sums available for this purpose), -Financial support - a monthly amount representing : + the equivalent in Romanian currency of 65 EURO per month, for the under-graduate students (1st cycle), + the equivalent in Romanian currency of 75 EURO per month, for post-graduate students (master degrees and specialization) 2nd cycle, + the equivalent in Romanian currency of 85 EURO per month, for post graduate students (doctor’s degree) 3rd cycle.

International Student Scholar Tanaya Sahoo Forges a Future in Materials Science and Engineering

​Growing up in a "steel city," Rourkela, India, Tanaya Sahoo was steeped in engineering and technology. The city's industrial landscape wasn't just a backdrop; it was a constant reminder of the power of innovation and engineering toward socioeconomic prosperity.

As her father, a civil engineer, navigated the technological complexities of infrastructure in the Rourkela Steel Plant, Sahoo witnessed firsthand how engineering could shape communities and confront challenges head-on. Between the city's prowess in steel production and its impact on environmental preservation, Sahoo found her passion for engineering and developed a strong belief in engineering's ability to bring about positive change.

Sahoo earned a bachelor's degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, and is now a second-year materials science and engineering graduate student at the University of California, Davis. Her time at UC Davis, which has focused on magnetism research, combining unique experimental and computational methodologies, has laid the groundwork for her goal to deploy advanced, sustainable technologies to solve real-world problems in materials science.

As Sahoo commenced her graduate program and acclimated to the new environment, she encountered challenges in adjusting to the graduate-level academic curriculum of engineering. Despite initial obstacles, Sahoo received valuable support from her advisor and peers, significantly enhancing her graduate school experience.

"My research peer Dayne Sasaki helped me as I navigated some of my research's major complexities," explained Sahoo. "My advisor, Dr. Yayoi Takamura , has gone above and beyond to support me in grad school. At the end of the day, it was all about not losing perspective no matter how difficult the going got."

Sahoo's internship at Applied Materials Inc. also provided valuable insights into real-world industrial engineering and the application of cutting-edge materials science technologies. Working within the Semiconductor Process Group, she automated process engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience with advanced systems unique to the industry.

In March 2024, Sahoo presented research on the magnetic domains of patterned micromagnets at the American Physical Society annual meeting. Furthermore, she was recognized by the APS Division of Materials Physics with one of 20 Ovshinsky Student Travel Awards, which recognizes her exceptional work in physics and materials science.

"The award also recognizes a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the scientific community," Sahoo explained, reflecting on her journey in engineering. "Two years ago, I came in as an international student. Davis was new to me. I traveled miles across a different continent to be here, pursue what I thought was in my best interests, and act on my vision for achieving greater engineering potential. The nature of my research, magnetism, was a cherry on the cake!"

As an international graduate student, Sahoo learned firsthand the importance of building a support system and learning to settle into a new community. She traversed the challenges of graduate school, gradually adapted and gained confidence.

Following graduation this spring, she will start a new journey as a process engineer at Applied Materials Inc. Reflecting on her time at UC Davis, Sahoo has some advice for future international students.

"[I encourage] being brave enough to express your ideas and holding on to a broader vision of making a difference," said Sahoo. "The scientific community at UC Davis is a brilliant mixing pot, so try not to be shy about inquiries and getting advice. Persistence can be transformative and there is no shortcut for hard work. The good thing is that you are given choices, and you can choose to make the best out of them.

The priority deadline to submit international applications for the Parkville Daytime Campus, from outside of the United States is October 1 for the spring semester and April 1 for the fall semester.

International Non-Immigrant Students applying for admission to Park University must present evidence of high school graduation to complete application to the institution and be reviewed for admission. The official transcript from the secondary institution from which the student graduated is the accepted form of evidence of graduation. One (1) of the following alternatives to the official secondary institution transcript may be submitted as evidence of high school graduation:

  • Official transcript(s) from a non-United States post-secondary institution(s)
  • Official transcript(s) from an  acceptable accredited    post-secondary United States institution(s) from which the student has earned a minimum total of 24 credit hours

English Proficiency Requirements

Evidence of English language proficiency is required for admission to Park University. Applicants are exempt from providing evidence of English proficiency if one (1) of the following criteria apply:

  • The applicant is a U.S. citizen from one of the fifty U.S. states or Washington, D.C.
  • The applicant has permanent residency in one of the fifty US states or Washington, D.C.

If neither of those criteria applies, the applicant must provide evidence of English proficiency. Students may submit one (1) of the following as evidence of English proficiency:

  • A minimum English test score exceeding one of the following:
  • Completion of an English as a Second Language program from either ELS (completion of Level 112 English for Academic Purposes Program) or The Language Company (Level 9).
  • Completion of 24 non-ESL credit hours in residence at an  acceptable accredited    United States institution.
  • Diploma or degree from an  acceptable accredited    United States institution.
  • Diploma from a post-secondary educational institution where English is the principal language of instruction. In this instance, the applicant must provide evidence of at least three years of full-time enrollment in the diploma granting institution.
  • Prior to March 2016: Minimum composite score of 930 on the SAT (430 in Critical Reading and 440 in Math)
  • March 2016 & after: Minimum sub-score of 310 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.
  • ACT: Minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT (18 in Critical Reading and 16 in Math).
  • Proof of at least 3 years of academic coursework from a country/countries in which the official language is English. Please see listing of TOEFL/IELTS exempted countries below.

*Students from Quebec and Francophone educational system may be required to submit proof of English language proficiency.

International Non-Immigrant Students applying for admission to Park University must present evidence of Financial Capacity, i.e. a bank statement. If you hold, or intend to seek, an F-1 Student visa, you must provide financial documentation that has been issued within the last 6 months, and the funds shown must be in liquid assets (readily accessible). Bank statements may be in the country of origin’s currency, but must be equal to the required U.S. Dollar amount. If a student is sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM), the SACM Financial Guarantee must be addressed to Park University

International Non-Immigrant Students applying for admission to Park University must present an Affidavit of Support. The Affidavit of Support must verify the financial sponsor’s willingness to pay for tuition, registration fees, books, and living expenses (if applicable) for the duration of the student’s studies in the U.S.

Insurance for International Students

Enrollment in the Park University sponsored health insurance is mandatory for all F-1 visa holders and their dependents (F-2 visa holders). Government sponsored students whose sponsoring body provides health insurance coverage are exempted from purchasing sponsored insurance through Park University.

Undergraduate International Nonimmigrant Students

Park University has a distinguished group of 292 international students representing 51 countries. The Office of International Students (OIS) serves Park University’s international nonimmigrant student population from pre-admission through post-graduation. Newly arrived international students will attend a Check-In Session with OIS as well as an international student Orientation to provide education on visa regulations, help students acclimate to their new home, and assist with personal concerns such as culture shock. OIS provides ongoing social activities, individualized student advising, and continuous guidance regarding the Department of Homeland Security policies and benefits. The office also provides admission guidance for international nonimmigrant students

The Office of International Students advises one of the largest student clubs on campus, the World Student Union (WSU). Each month, WSU plans social activities for club members, which may include fundraisers, fun excursions in the city, community service projects. ISS sponsors various forums for students to share their culture — the Culture Hour, The Coming to America Series, International Education Week, Cultural Sharing Event, and more.

Graduate International Nonimmigrant Students

Park University welcomes applications for admission from international non-immigrant students from all countries. As a graduate international non-immigrant student, you may apply for graduate study as a first-time graduate applicant or as a graduate transfer-in student. You are a transfer student if you have attended a college or university and have earned a bachelor’s degree and are earning credits towards a graduate degree. Most programs at Park University do not require the graduate standard examination such as GMAT.

New international students are required to pay all costs no later than the ‘confirmation date’ for each term. International students are ineligible for payment plans. All Park University students who fail to pay their tuition and fees prior to the confirmation date will be dropped from all courses for non-payment.

All international non-immigrant applicants must have all required documents, application fee, financial documents, and meet all admission requirements in order for the Office of International Education (IE) to recommend your application for admission into a graduate program. Once a decision is made, Graduate admissions will notify IE office to process the acceptance or denial decision. If you are admitted for graduate study, IE will issue your Form I-20.

International Graduate Admission: Change of Program/Major

Graduate students studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa are expected to complete a minimum of one term of enrollment in the academic program to which they were admitted and for which the I-20 was issued. Graduate students who wish to change programs of study after arrival in the U.S. (whether to a different graduate program or an undergraduate program) may pursue a different program for a subsequent term, provided the student submits a new application and is admitted. Graduate students who have not yet arrived in the U.S. may apply to a different program. Admission to other academic programs is not guaranteed, and the start term may be contingent upon program requirements.

Admissions Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related technical field, such as math, physics, behavioral sciences or health sciences. Appropriate academic background varies by graduate specialization.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for all undergraduate work undertaken during the last two years of the applicant's studies. 
  • GRE scores are optional for PhD program admissions.
  • We will also consider demonstrated practical engineering experience and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Earned MS degree or demonstrated research experience is preferred for admission to the PhD Program

In addition to the above requirements, proficiency is required in mathematics through the level of multivariate calculus, probability and statistics considered from a calculus point of view, and computer programming. Students whose backgrounds have not adequately prepared them to enter the graduate curriculum directly may be asked to take appropriate undergraduate courses. Credit for these courses will not be applied toward the minimum number of hours required for the MS/ME degrees. In exceptional cases, the department may admit an applicant who does not meet all these requirements; in such cases, the department will set special performance criteria for continuing in the program.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee of $85 must be submitted for each graduate application before it will be reviewed. You can pay the application fee in your Application Status Portal via credit card. The link to pay your application fee will appear shortly after you submit your application. If you have an issue with your application fee, please contact [email protected] .

We do not offer application fee waivers for our programs. Only US Military/Veterans and their spouses and participants in special programs such as Americorps, McNair Scholars, EOP, HEOP, SEEK, or Project 1000 are eligible for an application fee waiver. Program participants must also be a US citizen or permanent resident. There are no exceptions. If you are eligible and requesting a waiver, please contact [email protected] with documentation of your military service or program participation.

Materials Checklist

Personal statement.

Your application package must include a brief statement of purpose describing your background and your academic and career goals. The Personal Statement can be typed into the space provided on the application or uploaded electronically to the application.

Transcripts

Unofficial copies of transcripts are to be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts are not required at the time the application is submitted. If an applicant is accepted and decides to attend our program, official transcripts will be requested at that time.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required for PhD program applicants. While we will accept letters from professional sources, we strongly prefer letters from professors who are acquainted with your academic interests, achievements and abilities.

Requests for letters of recommendation will be emailed to your recommenders upon submitting your application form. Recommenders can submit their recommendations online. Once submitted, they are automatically uploaded to your online application.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

GRE scores are optional for the PhD program admissions. Please note: the GRE may be required for some scholarship/fellowships.

English Language Proficiency

International applicants are required to provide proof of English proficiency. The exam results must be dated within two years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term for which you applied. The University at Buffalo has a minimum TOEFL score requirement of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based). On IELTS, UB requires an overall score of 6.5.

Information and arrangements to take the GRE and TOEFL exams can be made by contacting the Educational Testing Service (ETS) . It is strongly recommended to make test arrangements early in the year so sufficient time can be allowed for the results to be reported before our application deadline.

International Student Financial Form

All international applicants must submit a completed financial form. Answer all questions thoroughly. An I-20 cannot be issued without this form and supporting documentation showing necessary funds for each year of intended study (two years for a master's program; five years for a PhD program). A Newcastle University doctoral student has received international recognition for the quality and originality of her research.

Jaun Hwang, a PhD student in the  Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS)  in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, has received the prestigious  American Association of Geographers ’ 2024 prize for  Best Dissertation Proposal , in the Economic Geography Specialty Group. The highly competitive award recognises postgraduate researchers whose work promises to make a valuable contribution to economic geography and regional development studies.

Jaun, from South Korea, won the award for her research proposal ‘ The dynamic relationship between entrepreneurship and institutions in regional path development: A comparative study of Korean industrial cities’ . The research aims to investigate and explain how entrepreneurs build and transform local institutions such as regional industrial associations and other organisations involved in economic development at a regional level.   

Despite growing interest in the role of individuals’ motivations and behaviours in the development of new regional industrial pathways, there remains a strong belief that institutional structures are the main influence on regional entrepreneurship. However, in practice, entrepreneurs do not always conform to existing institutions but create significant change in structures to make their new businesses accepted and recognised within their region.

The novelty of Jaun’s research is its dynamic approach to the relationship between entrepreneurship and this type of infrastructure and system. Through investigating comparative case studies of deindustrializing cities in Korea, Jaun’s study will identify necessary conditions, key actors, and processes of local institutional transformation by entrepreneurs. The findings will shed light on the question of why some regions can change their institutions to adapt to a new economic environment while others are unable to do so. Jaun is co-supervised by  Dr Kean Fan Lim  and  Professor Andy Pike .

Jaun said: “I am proud that my research potential has been recognised internationally in this way. This award significantly boosts my academic motivation and gives me the confidence to use this opportunity to realise the potential for my research to contribute to the literature in this field. My heartfelt gratitude goes to my supervisors Professor Andy Pike and Dr Kean Fan Lim, and academic colleagues in CURDS, for their invaluable support which has enabled me to have such a meaningful experience at this early stage of my career.”
