Presentation planning is a useful and necessary skill in the professional world as well as school. Whether you need to sell a product, or get a passing grade in your class, planning a presentation takes time and dedication. You will want to figure out the best way to construct your material, considering your audience and your presentation's message. From there, work on building your slides and materials. Assemble information in a logical order that best illustrates your point. Practice your presentation regularly before delivering it. This can help you figure out any information that should be cut or restructured.

Assembling Your Best Material

Step 1 Think about the goal of your presentation.

  • Write down your most important points. See if you notice a key point emerging. If your audience were to take away one thing from this presentation, what would it be?
  • Don't just bombard your audience with facts. Think about what these facts do for your audience. What's the point you're trying to make with the information?

Step 2 Know your audience's background to help you structure your presentation.

  • Are you trying to sell them a product, introduce them to a new idea, alter their way of thinking?
  • Think about the kind of people in your audience. Do you have a tougher crowd, or do you have a group of enthusiastic people excited about what you're going to say?

Step 3 Select your main points based on the length of your presentation.

  • For example, if you're talking to a company about recycling program, you might discuss how corporate pollution contributes to global warming and how recycling can help the company save money. You wouldn't discuss the melting ice caps as a key point.
  • Melting ice caps are a valid concern, but they are a fact or a supporting point.

Step 4 Find your best-supporting information.

  • Add clarity to your argument by explaining anything the audience may not understand. For example: a brief overview of pollution's effect on climate change.
  • Add authority by making connections with existing research, studies, and information. For example, you could mention the consensus in the scientific community that global warming is manmade and cite a few studies.
  • Add color to your argument through visuals, like pictures and videos. For instance, you could show a chart of the amount of waste an average corporation produces in one month.

Finding a Trajectory for the Presentation

Step 1 Start your presentation with a solid introduction.

  • Include the basics of introducing yourself. You can say something like, "I'm Clara Thompson from Clean Water Action, and I would like to address your company today."
  • Get your audience's attention with a question or a fact. For example, you could ask: "Have you ever passed a body of water covered in green sludge and wondered how this happened? The answer may surprise you."
  • You don’t have to write your presentation in chronological order. If you want to work on your main points first and save the introduction for last, you can.

Step 2 Present your research and work in the body of the presentation.

  • For example, you're trying to get the corporation to alter their recycling program. Start by overviewing the vast amount of corporate pollution in the world.
  • Explain the consequences of this. Show how pollution contributes to climate change, then show what the corporation can do through changes in their policies.

Step 3 Use linking statements to make your points clear.

  • Common linking statements include things like, "Another important issue...," "Based on this data, you can now see..." and, "This brings me to my main point..."
  • For example, "Now that I've shown you the effects of corporate pollution, this brings me to my main point. What can you do to stop it?"

Step 4 Make use of visuals and graphics on your slides.

  • If you have any graphs or diagrams that will help illustrate your point, use them. Physically seeing information can help make your point more clear.
  • You should also see if there are any videos you can include. A brief video of someone succinctly explaining an issue can shake things up a bit.
  • Pictures are also nice. Each slide should have a picture related to the topic at hand.
  • Make sure not to overuse graphics or visuals. Too many could be overwhelming or distracting for your audience.

Step 5 Conclude your presentation.

  • You only need one slide. Recap what your point was. Begin with something like, "As you can see..." and then briefly repeat your main point.
  • A visual can help as well. Try adding one last visual aid that sums up your point. A graph or diagram would work well here.

Practicing Your Presentation

Step 1 Strive for 1 to 2 minutes of talking per slide.

  • If you're taking longer, cut some information out. You do not want to talk fast to include all information, as this can make you difficult to understand.
  • For accuracy, talk in your regular voice. Do not speak too fast or too slow. You want to make sure you can fit in all information talking at a normal rate.

Step 2 Keep your information relevant to the theme.

  • Are any facts extraneous? It's great to illustrate the effects of global warming, but do you really need five examples of environmental decay? Try to cut it down to two or three.

Step 3 Listen to yourself presenting.

  • You should sound enthusiastic when presenting. Talk without hesitance, and don't use filler words, like "um" or "uh."
  • Don't jump between topics. Use your linking sentences, and say things like, "And this brings me to the following..."
  • Watch the time. Make sure your presentation isn't going on for too long.
  • Watch yourself give the presentation in a mirror so you can correct any distracting movements or gestures.

Step 4 Practice until you have little need for your notes.

  • Don’t read the information off of your visuals since it could affect your engagement between yourself and the audience.

How to create a work plan (examples and template)

As a kid, I watched John “Hannibal” Smith from The A-Team often say, “I love when a plan comes together.” The four action heroes appeared to be able to create elaborate plans to solve their challenge of the week and execute them on the spot. Well, I never thought that as an adult product manager, I would be saying the same words.

How To Create A Work Plan (Examples And Template)

In practice, my planning comes with way more hurdles than the TV action heroes faced. However, both the A-team and the product teams still need a work plan to achieve success!

What is a work plan?

Now, what is a work plan in product management, especially in an agile product management world? A work plan is a high-level document that helps you gather any initiative’s goals, timelines, risks, and other aspects for a future update. It helps you coordinate and monitor these details to make sure the work is going accordingly.

“Wait a minute!” – you may shout – “That sounds like project management!”

Well, I need to agree here. But, this work plan is not there for you to get timelines from your team and monitor them with a stopwatch.

This is a communication tool. This is how you help yourself, your team members, and your stakeholders get a common understanding of upcoming challenges. When you work with your team on the plan, the right people get their chance to voice their concerns and ideas.

Also, in the product management world, it is not about setting everything in stone. It’s about being able to create clarity where possible (say, the problem you want to fix with the new initiative) and identify the moving elements (i.e., where will the development go once a certain aspect is A/B tested).

What are the 3 steps of a work plan?

To understand a tool work plan for a product manager, let’s divide it into three stages:

  • Preparation

Let’s take a look at them one by one!

1. Preparation

Every change starts with an idea. However, the idea is simply not enough to convince anyone that it’s a good one. Thus, here comes the bulk of, often lonely, work of a product manager. In this stage, you should:

Create an initiative document

Establish a user story or similar, verify how the idea fits the current product fundamentals and focus, choose the product metrics to address, perform research and early product discovery, identify the internal stakeholders.

  • Create a ticket in your product management software

Plan a project kick-off meeting

Step One Preparation

This is not your Jira ticket — not yet. This will be your work plan’s main document, where you will gather all the notes and key information needed. For now, this can be a private document, but be aware that you should be able to share it with anyone at any point.

It’s not your notepad, but a document collecting all aspects of the initiative. This document will later be super handy when crafting any other communication or updates connected to this initiative. Be sure to record the information you collect from the following points in this document.

While the book approach dictates that you start with a problem to solve, let’s face it, we usually work on solutions. However, a solution looking for a problem is most likely nothing more than a waste of time.

Thus, provide the right context for your initiative, the intended user group and the value the idea delivers. This will set a solid foundation for the rest of the work you are going to do. Thus, start by filling in this sentence:

As a [description of user], I want [functionality], so that [benefit].

Every product idea needs a good context. It has to fit the current product vision and strategy, and address current goals and OKRs . Without it, it will be a distraction from the current direction. Doesn’t mean the idea is bad, but timing is also important. You can still plan it! Duh! A well-crafted work plan can be a basis to define the next period OKRs!

If you verified the context, it’s time to link your solution to your product metrics and goals. It’s OK to have ideas that don’t address any metrics directly, but build product quality to increase long-term retention. However, it will be far harder to sell such work to your stakeholders.

No worries, you just need to adjust your pitching strategy. Maybe the idea is worth pursuing as a side project or hackathon initiative. Anyway, make sure your flagship initiatives at least plan to improve some of the key product metrics. It’s best to also include that in a written product change hypothesis.

While it’s not always possible to get all the information you need, try to research the answers to the following questions:

  • Was this solution tested in other areas of the product or by competitors or semi-competitors? For example, the “stories” feature worked out great on Instagram, but it was a disaster on Skype
  • Is there a science paper that evaluated the idea in a controlled environment? For example, have scientists evaluated the impact of gamification on users’ behavior?
  • Are you able to estimate the impact of the initiative on product metrics or are you performing a pure “guesstimation”?
  • Which user personas will benefit from the update?
  • What are the other ways to solve the same problem (this is just a sanity check step to see if you can come up with even a better idea)

From developers, researchers, business analysts, and other product managers to high-level executives. This will help you down the road in making sure all the right parties are up to speed!

Create a ticket in your product management software (most likely Jira)

At this stage, you should be able to create your epic and copy-paste relevant information from the initiative’s document. It’s a formality at this stage, as you basically have everything to create an exceptional epic.

Once you did all that due diligence, it’s time to call in a meeting and get all the needed stakeholders in one room to get everyone on the same page. However, the main goal will be to create a more tangible product plan and identify the unknown risks and gaps that could prevent the idea from becoming a reality.

2. Kick off

Now that all the product manager’s preparation work is completed, the kick-off meeting can be treated as sort of a handoff meeting. While the PM doesn’t move on to researching another idea right after this meeting, the responsibility of making it happen is essentially passed on to the development team. Or at least it should be like this.

If you are a product manager that also performs the project manager/development team leader duties, you will have to see all the work through until the end.

Anyway, regardless of your role, here are the elements you need to tackle during the kick-off meeting. Remember to record everything in the initiative document! The meeting here should consist of the following elements:

  • Product manager presenting their findings
  • Discussion on those findings to make sure all meeting members are on the same page
  • Planning out the high-level technical elements needed plus the timeline
  • Agreeing on the potential risks and brainstorming solutions to mitigate those
  • Seeking an MVP that can be implemented to test the product hypothesis as early as possible. This can mean different things, from a product discovery process where a mock of the update is presented to random people, to a full-blown working update with perhaps only a selected pool of intended functionalities
  • Drawing expected timeline and check-in points
  • Finalize the design – Mart – by the 14th of August
  • Build the API – Donna – by end of August
  • Prepare the tracking specification – Lucas – early August
  • Clearing the necessary architecture changes with team Astro – Monica – ASAP
  • Expected MVP release – Jane – second sprint of September
  • Agreeing on the requirements. You can come up with a draft of the update’s requirements for the Jira ticket, but it’s best to run them with the stakeholders and include their input
  • Final Q&A session to make sure everyone leaves the room at least in peace, if not optimistic and confident

Now, as I mentioned earlier, what happens next depends on how your organization defines your product manager role. This might be a point after which you only check in with the team to share your opinion on the deliverables and collect status updates for your communication. However, you may also be the person who needs to change this into a full-on project management role, with full oversight, daily reports, and addressing any hurdles the team should face.

Sidenote: honestly, if you are closer to the second possibility, please consider changing employers. You won’t be growing as a product manager if project management takes the bulk of your job.

Assuming you work in an agile organization, the plan is now being realized and adjusted on the fly based on what will happen. The timeline can be pushed back for multiple reasons, but that’s OK.

Timely delivery is not about setting dates and deliverable outcomes in stone — it’s about using agile scrum to deliver the optimal value to the user and knowing how to do it transparently. It’s a neat compromise between chaotic-on-the-fly decision-making and a complex predefined structure project execution plan as presented by, i.e., PRINCE2 framework.

As you are, hopefully, an agile product manager, let’s look at the final stage of the plan:

3. Evaluation

This is a bit fuzzy part where you are meant to reflect on how the plan is coming together. While you will be making your decisions based on the MVP and following releases’ performance, it will be really impressive if you are already prepared for certain outcomes.

Try to answer the following questions:

  • What happens next after the MVP is successful (or not)?
  • What parts of a successful MVP should be improved first and foremost?
  • Does the result of this initiative impact your roadmap going forward? How? (i.e., when your experiment is done as a small side project, but is so successful it promises way better results than other roadmap items planned)
  • Can other parts of the product/company have any stake in this update? (i.e., If a new feature introduced in the mobile app is successful, perhaps the web browser version of the product should follow suit?)
  • Are there any opportunities this update unlocks?

Generally, sit down and speculate what you should do next. Don’t wait until the update is released to do that, as that will be a waste of time. If you find a successful result, you should pursue it immediately – every day you don’t build on your previous success is a day lost!

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. The Planner app in Microsoft Teams brings together all your tasks and plans across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem in a single convenient location. It helps you manage tasks more efficiently for individual plans and team initiatives, as well as larger scale projects that are aligned to goals and key strategic objectives. 

Once you add the Planner app to Teams, you'll find:

My Day : Includes any tasks that are due today, along with any tasks you choose to add to this view.

My Tasks : Includes a dedicated place called Private Tasks for you to quickly create tasks, Flagged Emails, and Tasks that have been assigned to you from Team’s meeting notes, basic plans, premium plans, and Loop components.

My Plans : Includes all of your To Do lists, basic plans, and premium plans.

New Plan : Create new personal or shared plans directly in the app.

You can also use the Planner app to get notifications about Planner tasks.

Planner offers a purpose-built My Tasks view, designed to centralize all the tasks relevant to you. My Tasks is organized into four distinct views, each serving a unique purpose:

Private tasks :   Private tasks is a place for you to quickly jot down tasks at the speed of thought. This is a place where you can create tasks that do not belong to a plan yet. You can then further organize these tasks inside Plans by selecting More actions, which will help you move these unorganized tasks in definitive plans.

Assigned to me :   Includes all of the tasks that have been assigned to you in Teams meeting notes, basic plans, premium plans, Loop component, and shared lists in To Do.

Flagged emails : All your flagged emails from Outlook appear in the Flagged emails section. You can also navigate to the emails directly from the task by selecting the attachment.

All : The All view provides an aggregation of all your individual tasks from Private tasks, Assigned to me, and Flagged emails. You can then filter and sort to meet your needs. For example, if you want to see all your tasks that are due tomorrow and are urgent, just apply the filter on this view and you will get a curated list of tasks.

See all of your plans with My Plans

The My Plans page in Planner shows all of your plans, no matter where they were created. This includes lists created in To Do, plans created in Planner and Project for the web, Loop plans, plans from Teams meeting notes, and more.

The My Plans page provides five filters to help find the right plan or list:

Recent:  Shows your most recently accessed plans and lists.

Shared:  Shows your shared plans and lists.

Personal:  Shows your personal plans and lists.

Pinned:  Shows all plans and lists you have pinned.

My teams:  Shows all of your plans that are shared with a Team’s channel.

Tip:  Use keywords to quickly find plans and lists by selecting  Filter by keyword .

How can I plan what to eat or drink when I have diabetes?

How can physical activity help manage my diabetes, what can i do to reach or maintain a healthy weight, should i quit smoking, how can i take care of my mental health, clinical trials for healthy living with diabetes.

Healthy living is a way to manage diabetes . To have a healthy lifestyle, take steps now to plan healthy meals and snacks, do physical activities, get enough sleep, and quit smoking or using tobacco products.

Healthy living may help keep your body’s blood pressure , cholesterol , and blood glucose level, also called blood sugar level, in the range your primary health care professional recommends. Your primary health care professional may be a doctor, a physician assistant, or a nurse practitioner. Healthy living may also help prevent or delay health problems  from diabetes that can affect your heart, kidneys, eyes, brain, and other parts of your body.

Making lifestyle changes can be hard, but starting with small changes and building from there may benefit your health. You may want to get help from family, loved ones, friends, and other trusted people in your community. You can also get information from your health care professionals.

What you choose to eat, how much you eat, and when you eat are parts of a meal plan. Having healthy foods and drinks can help keep your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels in the ranges your health care professional recommends. If you have overweight or obesity, a healthy meal plan—along with regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and other healthy behaviors—may help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. In some cases, health care professionals may also recommend diabetes medicines that may help you lose weight, or weight-loss surgery, also called metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Choose healthy foods and drinks

There is no right or wrong way to choose healthy foods and drinks that may help manage your diabetes. Healthy meal plans for people who have diabetes may include

  • dairy or plant-based dairy products
  • nonstarchy vegetables
  • protein foods
  • whole grains

Try to choose foods that include nutrients such as vitamins, calcium , fiber , and healthy fats . Also try to choose drinks with little or no added sugar , such as tap or bottled water, low-fat or non-fat milk, and unsweetened tea, coffee, or sparkling water.

Try to plan meals and snacks that have fewer

  • foods high in saturated fat
  • foods high in sodium, a mineral found in salt
  • sugary foods , such as cookies and cakes, and sweet drinks, such as soda, juice, flavored coffee, and sports drinks

Your body turns carbohydrates , or carbs, from food into glucose, which can raise your blood glucose level. Some fruits, beans, and starchy vegetables—such as potatoes and corn—have more carbs than other foods. Keep carbs in mind when planning your meals.

You should also limit how much alcohol you drink. If you take insulin  or certain diabetes medicines , drinking alcohol can make your blood glucose level drop too low, which is called hypoglycemia . If you do drink alcohol, be sure to eat food when you drink and remember to check your blood glucose level after drinking. Talk with your health care team about your alcohol-drinking habits.

Find the best times to eat or drink

Talk with your health care professional or health care team about when you should eat or drink. The best time to have meals and snacks may depend on

  • what medicines you take for diabetes
  • what your level of physical activity or your work schedule is
  • whether you have other health conditions or diseases

Ask your health care team if you should eat before, during, or after physical activity. Some diabetes medicines, such as sulfonylureas  or insulin, may make your blood glucose level drop too low during exercise or if you skip or delay a meal.

Plan how much to eat or drink

You may worry that having diabetes means giving up foods and drinks you enjoy. The good news is you can still have your favorite foods and drinks, but you might need to have them in smaller portions  or enjoy them less often.

For people who have diabetes, carb counting and the plate method are two common ways to plan how much to eat or drink. Talk with your health care professional or health care team to find a method that works for you.

Carb counting

Carbohydrate counting , or carb counting, means planning and keeping track of the amount of carbs you eat and drink in each meal or snack. Not all people with diabetes need to count carbs. However, if you take insulin, counting carbs can help you know how much insulin to take.

Plate method

The plate method helps you control portion sizes  without counting and measuring. This method divides a 9-inch plate into the following three sections to help you choose the types and amounts of foods to eat for each meal.

  • Nonstarchy vegetables—such as leafy greens, peppers, carrots, or green beans—should make up half of your plate.
  • Carb foods that are high in fiber—such as brown rice, whole grains, beans, or fruits—should make up one-quarter of your plate.
  • Protein foods—such as lean meats, fish, dairy, or tofu or other soy products—should make up one quarter of your plate.

If you are not taking insulin, you may not need to count carbs when using the plate method.

Work with your health care team to create a meal plan that works for you. You may want to have a diabetes educator  or a registered dietitian  on your team. A registered dietitian can provide medical nutrition therapy , which includes counseling to help you create and follow a meal plan. Your health care team may be able to recommend other resources, such as a healthy lifestyle coach, to help you with making changes. Ask your health care team or your insurance company if your benefits include medical nutrition therapy or other diabetes care resources.

Talk with your health care professional before taking dietary supplements

There is no clear proof that specific foods, herbs, spices, or dietary supplements —such as vitamins or minerals—can help manage diabetes. Your health care professional may ask you to take vitamins or minerals if you can’t get enough from foods. Talk with your health care professional before you take any supplements, because some may cause side effects or affect how well your diabetes medicines work.

Research shows that regular physical activity helps people manage their diabetes and stay healthy. Benefits of physical activity may include

  • lower blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels
  • better heart health
  • healthier weight
  • better mood and sleep
  • better balance and memory

Talk with your health care professional before starting a new physical activity or changing how much physical activity you do. They may suggest types of activities based on your ability, schedule, meal plan, interests, and diabetes medicines. Your health care professional may also tell you the best times of day to be active or what to do if your blood glucose level goes out of the range recommended for you.

Do different types of physical activity

People with diabetes can be active, even if they take insulin or use technology such as insulin pumps .

Try to do different kinds of activities . While being more active may have more health benefits, any physical activity is better than none. Start slowly with activities you enjoy. You may be able to change your level of effort and try other activities over time. Having a friend or family member join you may help you stick to your routine.

The physical activities you do may need to be different if you are age 65 or older , are pregnant , or have a disability or health condition . Physical activities may also need to be different for children and teens . Ask your health care professional or health care team about activities that are safe for you.

Aerobic activities

Aerobic activities make you breathe harder and make your heart beat faster. You can try walking, dancing, wheelchair rolling, or swimming. Most adults should try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. Aim to do 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at one time. You can break up physical activity into small amounts during your day and still get the benefit. 1

Strength training or resistance training

Strength training or resistance training may make your muscles and bones stronger. You can try lifting weights or doing other exercises such as wall pushups or arm raises. Try to do this kind of training two times a week. 1

Balance and stretching activities

Balance and stretching activities may help you move better and have stronger muscles and bones. You may want to try standing on one leg or stretching your legs when sitting on the floor. Try to do these kinds of activities two or three times a week. 1

Some activities that need balance may be unsafe for people with nerve damage or vision problems caused by diabetes. Ask your health care professional or health care team about activities that are safe for you.

Stay safe during physical activity

Staying safe during physical activity is important. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Drink liquids

Drinking liquids helps prevent dehydration , or the loss of too much water in your body. Drinking water is a way to stay hydrated. Sports drinks often have a lot of sugar and calories , and you don’t need them for most moderate physical activities.

Avoid low blood glucose

Check your blood glucose level before, during, and right after physical activity. Physical activity often lowers the level of glucose in your blood. Low blood glucose levels may last for hours or days after physical activity. You are most likely to have low blood glucose if you take insulin or some other diabetes medicines, such as sulfonylureas.

Ask your health care professional if you should take less insulin or eat carbs before, during, or after physical activity. Low blood glucose can be a serious medical emergency that must be treated right away. Take steps to protect yourself. You can learn how to treat low blood glucose , let other people know what to do if you need help, and use a medical alert bracelet.

Avoid high blood glucose and ketoacidosis

Taking less insulin before physical activity may help prevent low blood glucose, but it may also make you more likely to have high blood glucose. If your body does not have enough insulin, it can’t use glucose as a source of energy and will use fat instead. When your body uses fat for energy, your body makes chemicals called ketones .

High levels of ketones in your blood can lead to a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) . DKA is a medical emergency that should be treated right away. DKA is most common in people with type 1 diabetes . Occasionally, DKA may affect people with type 2 diabetes  who have lost their ability to produce insulin. Ask your health care professional how much insulin you should take before physical activity, whether you need to test your urine for ketones, and what level of ketones is dangerous for you.

Take care of your feet

People with diabetes may have problems with their feet because high blood glucose levels can damage blood vessels and nerves. To help prevent foot problems, wear comfortable and supportive shoes and take care of your feet  before, during, and after physical activity.

If you have diabetes, managing your weight  may bring you several health benefits. Ask your health care professional or health care team if you are at a healthy weight  or if you should try to lose weight.

If you are an adult with overweight or obesity, work with your health care team to create a weight-loss plan. Losing 5% to 7% of your current weight may help you prevent or improve some health problems  and manage your blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels. 2 If you are worried about your child’s weight  and they have diabetes, talk with their health care professional before your child starts a new weight-loss plan.

You may be able to reach and maintain a healthy weight by

  • following a healthy meal plan
  • consuming fewer calories
  • being physically active
  • getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night 3

If you have type 2 diabetes, your health care professional may recommend diabetes medicines that may help you lose weight.

Online tools such as the Body Weight Planner  may help you create eating and physical activity plans. You may want to talk with your health care professional about other options for managing your weight, including joining a weight-loss program  that can provide helpful information, support, and behavioral or lifestyle counseling. These options may have a cost, so make sure to check the details of the programs.

Your health care professional may recommend weight-loss surgery  if you aren’t able to reach a healthy weight with meal planning, physical activity, and taking diabetes medicines that help with weight loss.

If you are pregnant , trying to lose weight may not be healthy. However, you should ask your health care professional whether it makes sense to monitor or limit your weight gain during pregnancy.

Both diabetes and smoking —including using tobacco products and e-cigarettes—cause your blood vessels to narrow. Both diabetes and smoking increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke , nerve damage , kidney disease , eye disease , or amputation . Secondhand smoke can also affect the health of your family or others who live with you.

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, stop. Ask for help . You don’t have to do it alone.

Feeling stressed, sad, or angry can be common for people with diabetes. Managing diabetes or learning to cope with new information about your health can be hard. People with chronic illnesses such as diabetes may develop anxiety or other mental health conditions .

Learn healthy ways to lower your stress , and ask for help from your health care team or a mental health professional. While it may be uncomfortable to talk about your feelings, finding a health care professional whom you trust and want to talk with may help you

  • lower your feelings of stress, depression, or anxiety
  • manage problems sleeping or remembering things
  • see how diabetes affects your family, school, work, or financial situation

Ask your health care team for mental health resources for people with diabetes.

Sleeping too much or too little may raise your blood glucose levels. Your sleep habits may also affect your mental health and vice versa. People with diabetes and overweight or obesity can also have other health conditions that affect sleep, such as sleep apnea , which can raise your blood pressure and risk of heart disease.

What are clinical trials for healthy living with diabetes?

Clinical trials—and other types of clinical studies —are part of medical research and involve people like you. When you volunteer to take part in a clinical study, you help health care professionals and researchers learn more about disease and improve health care for people in the future.

Researchers are studying many aspects of healthy living for people with diabetes, such as

  • how changing when you eat may affect body weight and metabolism
  • how less access to healthy foods may affect diabetes management, other health problems, and risk of dying
  • whether low-carbohydrate meal plans can help lower blood glucose levels
  • which diabetes medicines are more likely to help people lose weight

Creating a plan of action helps managers and executives implement their vision. Turn it into reality efficiently and with accountability of the involved stakeholders.

What is an Action Plan?

According to Wikipedia , an Action Plan is a list, with a sequence of tasks and resources, which outlines needed actions and when they need to be carried out, to achieve predefined goals. Action Plans are a very popular management tool within professional organizations. They are extensively used during strategic planning for their simplicity and effectiveness in a reality check.

Benefits of Creating an Action Plan

Action plans are very useful for communicating strategies and establish a clear direction. They provide visibility of objectives and the steps required to make them tangible, concrete. A plan of action breaks down the entire vision into achievable pieces that are manageable and executable. During this process, executives are able to visualize the strategy into smaller chunks and identify during this planning phase if they are realistic enough or if there exist constraints that can disqualify them before even creating projects or initiatives. Generally, Action Plans evolve into Plans which will provide detailed description of tasks, resources, timelines and their preconditions, and can then be monitored during execution.

Key Elements of an Action Plan

Action Plans can differ in structure depending on the area of application or planning practices. Most of them share the following six main components.

1. Describe Your Objectives

Start by defining and describing the objectives you’re trying to achieve. There may be one overarching goal for your strategy, or there may be various. This is an integral part of goals based strategic planning . Break down the vision into objectives and move into the next steps. The objective should be clear and self-explanatory. You can start with a one-liner and iterate drill-downs into more detail.

2. Break Down Tasks and Steps

Break down your objectives into tasks. Visualize the steps that need to be done in order to achieve the goal. Depending on how large the objective is, you may need to break it down into categories or phases, before listing the steps needed. Be exhaustive with this list in order to avoid any unforeseen hurdles in the process.

3. Assign People Responsible

Specify who or what team will be in charge of performing each of the tasks and steps previously listed.

4. Establish Deadlines and Milestones

Make sure you specify when each of the previous tasks should be completed, taking into account review and rework time. If you’ve broken down your action plan into phases, then establish the milestones at each phase in your plan of action. Make sure to determine precedence and preconditions to identify bottlenecks.

5. Anticipate Needed Resources

Visualize what people and resources you will need to get each of the tasks completed? Reasoning about resources is critical to understand the size and dimensions of the endeavor. This step is critical for a reality check.

6. Plan Progress Metrics

No plan is complete until progress and achievement indicators are defined. Individual tasks, milestones, and overall objectives will have their own ways to measure progress and completion. Establish this from the beginning to be able to carry out the appropriate monitoring and control.

How to Make Sure Your Action Plan is Effective

Visualize your action plan.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to have a visual form of your action plan. It will give you an idea of where to go and what your goal is. If you can see it in front of you, it’s easier to follow. Try using action plan PowerPoint templates to make this visualization process all the more easier (and probably more attractive).

Write SMART Goals

SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. As long as you set your SMART Goals with these key points in consideration, you will be able to reach your objective more effectively. Apart from the SMART Goals method, you can use the OKR framework (Objectives Key Results) to add another level of formality to your objective-setting process. Finally, every goal should pass the “reality check” reasoning. You can read further how to apply critical thinking goals .

Involve the Whole Team in the Planning

Making the best action plan isn’t just the job of managers and executives. The whole team should be involved. Everyone needs to know what their specific roles and responsibilities will be. Teams and individuals need to sign off and accept the tasks and their timeline. If any of the planned activities is at risk of completion, this should be identified and analyzed as soon as possible.

Know Each Step In-Depth

You need to know which tasks are more essential than others, which tasks depend on others being done first, and which are more flexible. This means adding your tasks into a detailed plan. Identify duration, precedence and resources involved.

Break Your Project into Milestones

Milestones are checkpoints during which management and team review what has been worked on and what is done already. These are like small goals you want to reach on your way to the larger objective. It is an essential part of monitoring activities. Make sure milestones are clear and associated with a deliverable.

Go Over the Action Plan (With Others)

Take this space as an opportunity to bring in other people and hear their opinions on the feasibility of your steps, deadlines, roles, and milestones. Make sure your action plan can be easily tracked, is comprehensive, and is accessible to everyone involved, from team members to stakeholders. Everyone should be able to understand what it is and where you are on the project.

Monitor, Measure, and Update as You Go

This might be the most important step in making sure your action plan is effective. You’ll need to be constantly following up on the tasks, checking in with the players, and adjusting when needed. Monitoring should be objective. This means a clear KPI should be used for this purpose. You can start with the basics as “progress of completion” over time, but depending on the level of sophistication, you can include more complex KPIs as budget burn down or risks related KPI’s.

How to Present Your Action Plan?

Presenting an action plan to an audience is a common task in all types of organizations. In every endeavor someone needs to approve the initiative, be it to get it funded or to approve the team’s efforts. Also people need to be notified about the action plan in order to understand its scope and how they are involved, or if any of the planned tasks will affect in any way. There is a difference between the steps involved in writing an action plan (as described above) and the required steps to present the action plan. Mainly because the purposes are different. The creation of an action plan is a planning activity. In this case, the people involved are picturing objectives and how they materialize through actions.

How to present your action plan to an audience

On the other hand, presenting an action plan is a communication activity. The presenter/s needs to clearly transmit the objectives of the action plan, list the high level tasks involved and be able to communicate which were the facts evaluated, during the planning process. Decisions made to reach the plan are also important as they distill the reasoning behind the plan.

In the next section, we break down the suggestions in three, based on the objective of the presentation; Persuade, Inform, Monitor & Control.

Present Your Action Plan to Persuade

If you want to persuade an educated audience to approve your action plan, there are three items you will need to highlight:

Achieving the action plan objectives needs to provide a benefit to the audience. Make sure your message is clear. Highlight how the objectives solve an existing problem/pain or how they materialize items of the organization strategy.

Implementation of the Vision

After you present the benefits, you need to communicate how it was planned to achieve them. Ideally a high level roadmap should be presented, in order to allow the audience to divide the solution in smaller pieces and picture the sequence of events.

Return of Investment

The action plan has costs and resources associated. Instead of deliberately explaining the costs of execution, adapt the message monetizing the benefits and contrasting them against the costs. This should be a positive percentage of increase over the investment. Show how this return is evaluated and which time frame covers it. Finally, contrast the return against the option of not doing . This generally settles the idea in the audience and triggers acceptance subconsciously.

Present your action plan to Inform

Presenting an action plan to inform is a common task in organizations. Be it before or after approval, informing the stakeholders about the action plan, will align expectations and will help gaining traction within the involved teams or individuals.

The Action Plan presentation will need to focus on two areas, purpose and activities.

To resonate with the audience, it is essential to inform how the action plan will help achieve goals that have a purpose. The message should be crafted in a way that connects with the audience and triggers interest. Empathy is crucial. Fulfilling a purpose is always more powerful as a goal rather than other concepts such as “making more money”. To achieve this, connect the goals and tasks with the strategic vision they are trying to materialize.

As an example, you can think of an organization that sells auto parts. One of the action plan objectives is to produce cheaper parts without compromising quality. The presenter can inform the audience about this objective with an associated purpose like investing more in reducing emissions (which is a concept extracted from the strategy).

Execution of any plan is crucial. Before the endeavor starts, it is necessary to inform everyone involved about their responsibility in the plan, with which resources they will count on, the expected timeline and the relationship between tasks and resources.

Every activity should answer one of the following questions:

  • Why is the activity part of the plan?
  • Where should the activity happen?
  • Who (team or individual) is responsible for carrying out the activity and knowing about it?
  • What resources are planned to consume during the activity.?
  • When should the activity start and end?
  • How will the activity be carried out?

These questions (also known as the 5W1H framework ) will help you drill down the action plan and inform appropriately.

Present your plan for Monitoring and Control

All plans are created to follow and evolve. Once the action plan is converted into a project or program, execution starts, and the management practices too. Management will define regular checkpoints for evaluating the current progress of the activities, resource consumption and achieved goals.

During monitoring and control presentations, the presenter should communicate a simple concept. Current status, versus previous status versus planned status at this point. In this way, the audience will be able to understand where the tasks are at the present time, which was the evolution compared to the previous meeting, and which is the deviation compared to the planned status at this point.

After this presentation, a new set of activities will be planned according to deviations and achievements, and the plan will be updated for future analysis.

Action plans are supposed to help organize strategy vision implementations from the beginning, as well as monitor progress throughout. Sticking to the plan is a laudable feat, but not the only endgame. As the initiative takes on its own life, you’ll find tasks you hadn’t anticipated, issues that keep people from delivering as you’d hoped, and many other barriers to success. However, that shouldn’t faze you. Use your action plan as a guide, but be prepared to problem solve and do what it takes to get your project done. If you get it done on the deadline you’d established in the beginning, then give yourself a mighty pat on the back. And if you don’t… You can be sure you’ll have learned many valuable things for the next time you start a new project and create a brand new action plan.

  • San Marcos, TX leaders visit to learn about Louisville economy

LOUISVILLE — Last week, the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce brought a group of more than 40 business leaders on their annual InterCity Conference to Greater Louisville. The group spent three days visiting both Louisville and Lexington and ended their visit with a presentation on workforce development and regional economic development from the Greater Louisville Inc. team.

“Every year, GLI takes business leaders to another city to glean best practices on our annual GLIDE trip, so it is always great to host other cities who want to learn from us,” said Sarah Davasher-Wisdom, president and CEO, Greater Louisville Inc. “We were honored to host San Marcos and look forward to seeing how they implement takeaways on Greater Louisville’s workforce and economic development programs.”

During their stay, San Marcos business leaders took part in a range of sessions including learning about workforce development, public private partnerships, and meeting with employers. Organizers also provided authentic Kentucky experiences at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, and stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

GLI’s Clark Welch, vice president of economic development, Christine Tarquinio, vice president of talent, workforce, and brand strategies, and Natalie Grubbs, director of economic development, delivered the closing presentation which focused on GLI’s Live in Lou initiative and Greater Louisville Partnership. Key takeaways included an overview of GLI’s talent outreach strategies and an explanation of how Louisville has benefitted from enacting a regional approach to economic development.

“We selected this vibrant city because it offers excellent examples of regional collaboration, economic development and innovative placemaking for our community leaders to study,” said Page Michel, president and CEO, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce. “As we gather here, we can glean new ideas and cultivate meaningful connections. This will all be instrumental when we return to our home city to work on future goals together.”

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce serves more than 500 members, representing over 13,000 people. As the 2019 Chamber of the Year, GLI, which represents 15 counties in Kentucky and Indiana, has hosted several Chambers of Commerce on learning expeditions over the years. GLI also offers similar opportunities for Greater Louisville business leaders to visit other communities through the annual GLIDE program, which will take business leaders to San Antonio, Texas in September.

PANEL: Managing Cryptography: Cryptographic Discovery & PQC Migration

Description.

The NCCoE Migration to PQC project offers a panel during which we will share our progress and insights gained from our work with our collaborators. Our project seeks to ease the Migration to PQC. We have focused on cryptographic discovery and on interoperability and performance of the draft algorithms in selected communication protocols.

NIST SP 1800-38B, Quantum Readiness: Cryptographic Discovery , is a preliminary draft offering (1) a functional test plan that exercises the cryptographic discovery tools to determine baseline capabilities; (2) a use case scenario to provide context and scope our demonstration; (3) an examination of the threats addressed in this demonstration; (4) a multifaceted approach to start the discovery process that most organizations can start today; and (5) a high-level architecture based on our use case that integrates contributed discovery tools in our lab.
