Pakistan Super League- Brief Introduction

PSL is a professional T20 cricket franchise league. The Pakistan Super League was founded in Lahore, Pakistan on 9th September 2023 with five teams and later become six teams.

The Pakistan Super League season runs between February and March. with each team playing 10 matches in the double round.

The top four teams with the best record qualify for the playoffs and culminate in the championship game, the PSL Cup Final. The Present PSL 2023 Champion is Quetta Gladiators . The current champions are Islamabad United, who won the title on 25 March 2023 in Karachi.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place in the United Arab Emirates with two playoff matches played in Lahore and the final at the National Stadium, Karachi.

The player draft for the 2023 season is held in Lahore on 12 November 2023. 501 players including both Pakistani and international players were divided into five different categories. Each franchise was allowed to pick a maximum of seven foreign players in their squads which could have a maximum of 21 members.

Every Pakistan Super League team played each other twice and the top four teams Islamabad United , Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi qualified for a series of playoff games while Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans failed to qualify for playoff stage in PSL 4.

PSL top 2 teams Islamabad United and Karachi Kings played the first qualifier in which Islamabad United beat Karachi Kings team by 8 wickets. The next two teams Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators played an eliminator in which Peshawar Zalmi beat Quetta Gladiators by 1 run.

The loser of the first qualifier Karachi Kings and the winner of the eliminator Peshawar Zalmi met in the second qualifier Match.

Peshawar Zalmi won by 13 runs.

The final took place on 27 March 2023 at National Stadium in Karachi . Pakistan. The tickets for the final were sold out within 3 hours. Peshawar Zalmi won the toss and elected to bat first and set a target of 149 for Quetta Gladiators. Quetta Gladiators chased the target in the 17th over with the loss of seven wickets.

It was initially scheduled to be the second season held entirely in Pakistan in February and March 2021, after the previous seasons were held elsewhere due to the security situation there.

On 4   March 2021, the PCB suspended the tournament with 14 of the scheduled 30 group matches having been played after multiple cases of COVID-19 were recorded. [1] In March, the PCB proposed to reschedule the remaining fixtures for June 2021 [2] with all matches to be held in Karachi , however, on 4   May, all the teams asked the PCB to move to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Pakistan . Which players have been retained?

In December, local players across the six franchises were recategorised based on last year’s competition.

Ahead of the draft, teams have chosen who among their squads they wish to retain, trade or release.

Alex Hales and Colin Ingram have traded places. English batsman Hales returns to Islamabad United, where he played in 2018 and 2019, with South African Colin Ingram going the other way, re-joining reigning champions Karachi Kings, for whom he also played in the past.

The swap marked the only trade completed by the six franchises, who have submitted their pre-draft lists of retained and released players.

Unsurprisingly, Karachi opted to keep hold of Babar Azam, who starred during their successful 2020 campaign. Likewise, Islamabad have retained the services of Shadab Khan.

Teams were permitted to hold onto up to eight players, though Peshawar Zalmi kept just five.

What is overseas player availability set to be like?

One challenge facing this edition of the Pakistan Super League is likely to be the availability of star overseas players. Due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the international programme for 2021 is even busier than normal. As a result, some players will only be available for part of the tournament.

“We are delighted to release a star-studded list of players in the platinum category even though we are dealing with an unprecedented situation due to Covid-19 and player availabilities are also hampered by a packed FTP calendar,” said Babar Hamid, the competition’s commercial director.

“The HBL Pakistan Super League 2021 will be another exciting season once again being played in Pakistan. The quality of players on the list is a further testament of the credibility and integrity of the league as it continues to attract the best T20 talent from around the world.

“In the coming days, we will work as hard as ever on successful delivery of the event with all stakeholders as we are determined and focussed on producing another world-class event while raising the bar higher and ensuring the safety and security of all participants.”

Take the example of Moeen Ali, who represented Multan Sultans last year and is among the 25-man platinum list this time around. With England set to tour India following their two-Test series in Sri Lanka, his availability would likely be compromised if selected.

The Cricketer  understands that the price brackets for the 2021 tournament are as follows:

Platinum players will have a base price of $130,000 and a maximum price of $170,000.

Diamond players will have a base price of $60,000 and a maximum price of $85,000.

Gold players will have a base price of $40,000 and a maximum price of $50,000.

Silver players will have a base price of $15,000 and a maximum price of $25,000.

Emerging players will have a price of $7,500.

Supplementary players will have a price of $50,000.

The remaining PSL 6 matches will be played in Abu Dhabi from 9th to 24th June, before the Pakistan men’s side’s departure for Manchester from the UAE capital on 25 June.

There will be six double-headers – five of them during the preliminary round and the sixth on 21 June, when Qualifier and Eliminator 1 matches will be played. These matches will start at 1700 UAE time (1800 PKT time) and 2200 UAE time (2300 PKT time), respectively, while the single-headers will begin at 2000 UAE time (2100 PKT time).

On June 9, fourth-placed Lahore Qalandars will meet third-placed Islamabad United in what will be the 15th match of the tournament.

To make this PSL 6 schedule work in the best interest of the event, players, commercial partners and franchises, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) , in consultation with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has agreed to delay the departure of the Pakistan men’s side’s players and players support personnel from Abu Dhabi to 25 June.

The side will arrive on Manchester from where they will be transported to Derby for the mandatory room isolation period and training session. The side will move to Cardiff on 6 July where the first One-Day International will be played on 8 July.

PSLE 2021 English Composition topic – A Promise

In our previous post , we talked about the basic elements of a turning point story. Today, we are using a model composition based on the PSLE 2021 English composition topic to illustrate the 4 main elements of a turning point story.

Point (1) – Begin with the bad

As explained in the previous post, a turning point story begins with the negative attitude of the main character. This negative attitude then serves as the main problem of the story.

As illustrated, the story begins with the main character’s poor attitude towards his studies as well as how he chooses to neglect his studies for his gaming.

It is important to write his negative attitude in relative detail using his interaction with others (example: with his teacher in Paragraph 2) .

However, students s hould take care not to overdescribe the negative attitude as the emphasis should be in the next part of the story.

Point (2) – Write the Turning Point

The story then moves onto the turning point which is an important scene in the middle of the story which changes the direction of the story.

In this case, the pivotal scene (turning point) is that of the main character visiting his mother in the hospital. Despite being ill, she still cared for the main character.

This serves as an effective turning point for the story as it provides a convincing reason for the main character to change for the better.

As illustrated in the model composition, the turning point is fully described in 1 – 2 paragraphs.

In this way, the proper emphasis is given to one of the most important parts of the story.

Point (3) – Complete the story with the good

Next, we move onto an equally important part of the story – the positive change.

This is also the part that most students often neglect to expand on.

The usual misconception is that a few lines of the main character’s positive change is sufficient. This is not enough to clearly show to the reader how and what the main character did

To clearly show to the reader how the main character changed for the better, it is necessary to write:

• Which parts of his life did the main character seek to change?
• How did the main character do so?

As shown in the model composition, he :

• changed his attitude towards his mother by caring for her
• changed his attitude towards his studies by learning diligently

Point (4A) and (4B)- Emphasize the title

As one of the top PSLE exam tips , students should always remember to insert the title at the appropriate points in the story.

As illustrated in the model composition, the title is inserted in two important parts of the story :

• the main event (also known as the climax)
• the conclusion
