There are countless things to pick up any time you’re exploring in Monster Hunter: World . There are crafting materials, slinger ammo and instant-use items to be found. But just as important — if not more important — is finding evidence of monsters so you can track and hunt them. It’s in the name of game, after all.

Your scoutflies will point out the various leavings of the monsters in the area. You’ll find a steady stream of things like footprints , feathers , skidmarks and mucus . Examining those things will earn you research points . Once you earn enough points, you’ll start unlocking investigations. But there’s more to research points than just investigations.

Below, we’ll talk about how to earn research points and what you can do with them. Then we’ll talk about Ecological Research , where you can turn those points into monster hunting prowess.

How to earn and spend research points

You’ll earn research points for just about anything you do out in the world that isn’t about crafting or carving parts off of monsters. Examining traces of monsters, capturing endemic life-forms with your capture net and fishing all earn you points.

You’ll only earn a few points at a time, but there’s so much to find and capture that those points will add up quickly. There are three places where you can cash in research points:

  • P alico armor . At the smithy’s workshop in

research help mhw

  • , you pay for new palico armor with these points (and monster parts).
  • Canteen . You have the option to pay for meals at canteens with your points.
  • Botanical Research . Later in the game, after you complete your eighth assigned mission, you’ll unlock botanical research in Astera. You’ll spend your points to purchase fertilizer from the Chief Botanist.

Ecological Research

There’s a lot going on behind the scenes here that the game just doesn’t tell you about. The tl;dr is “pick up things because research points are good.” If you want to understand what those points do for you, this section will explain the unexplained.

The points you earn while exploring the New World come in two types. We’re calling them generic and monster-specific :

  • The endemic life you capture and the fish you catch just earn you generic points that go toward your total (that you can spend on things like we discussed above).
  • Monster-specific points are the ones you earn when you pick up traces of monsters like footprints and skidmarks. These points are labeled with the monster’s name when they appear in the notifications on your HUD. These go toward your bank of points just like the generic points, but they also feed into research levels with the Chief Ecologist in Astera .

Monster research levels

research help mhw

You’ll find the Chief Ecologist and Ecological Research hidden among a stack of books behind the Resource Center in the tradeyard. He’s your gateway to using those monster-specific points. Every monster-specific point you earn goes toward your monster research level . No matter how many points you earn, your monster research level will only increase once you visit the Chief Ecologist.

Your monster research level does a couple things for you:

  • First, it determines the detail included in your hunter’s notes . You’ll find your hunter’s notes in your menu under info . As you increase your levels, you’ll get information about each monsters’ weaknesses and weak points as well as information about each monsters’ drops.
  • Your monster research level also influences your scoutfly level . They deserve their own section.

Scoutfly level

research help mhw

When your scoutflies find monster traces and help you hunt down monsters, the points you earn go toward your scoutfly level for that monster — they’re monster-specific like we said above.

There are three scoutfly levels that you’ll achieve by earning research points:

  • Level 1 : Once you hit the first level, your scoutflies will lead you to the next monster trace along a monster’s trail.
  • Level 2 : At the second level, your scoutflies will lead you directly to the monster.
  • Level 3 : At the third level, the monster and its status will appear on your map.

Your scoutflies’ level isn’t permanent, though. It degrades over time. You can think of it as your scoutflies losing the scent of monsters you haven’t hunted in a while. That means your scoutfly level for each monster will increase and decrease over the course of your game.

Monster research level and scoutfly level

research help mhw

The monster research level for each monster adds a multiplier to the research points that fill your scoutfly level gauge. Basically, your scoutfly level will increase faster for monster research level 3 monsters than for level 1 monsters. By the time you reach level 3, you’ll earn one scoutfly level for each trace you examine — that means you only have to find two things before the monster appears on your map.

Monster Hunter World: How to Capture Wigglers (Research Bounty)

February 2, 2018 by PowerPyx Leave a Comment

In Monster Hunter World you can talk to a researcher on the map “Coral Highlands” and she will issue a bounty called  Research Help: Wiggler Capture .

This is a short bounty that requires you to catch 3 Wigglers in Coral Highlands. Those are the small worms sticking out the ground, they can be found near the southern camp. They will retract into the ground when you get close, even if you are sneaky.

But there is a very easy trick to capture the Wigglers:

Simply put on the Ghillie Mantle (at camp go in the tent, change equipment and instead of health booster pick the Ghillie Mantle). Then the Wigglers cannot see you coming! The same trick works for all other monsters/animals in the game. Now run up to the wigglers (they can’t hear you either) and use the capture net (automatically in your inventory at all times) to capture one of them. Below is a screenshot of what they look like and their location (in green circle).

research help mhw

The other wigglers will retract into the ground but worry not! Simply fast travel back to the southern camp and by the time you get back to them they will have come out of the ground again. You can also wait nearby or just run around the map, although fast-traveling back to camp is the safest bet. Finish the bounty by talking to the NPC at the research center in Astera and all is done.

All Piscine Researcher Critical Bounties in Monster Hunter World

Complete all critical bounties from the Piscine Researcher in Monster Hunter World.

Bill Lavoy

There are a lot of quests to complete in Monster Hunter World. Some of these will stay on your HUD indefinitely, even if you’d rather worry about other things. Some you’ll get while out on an expedition and struggle to keep track of going forward. The latter group of quests are often Critical Bounties, and usually given to you from the Piscine Researcher or Endemic Life Researcher. Today we’ll be focusing on the former.

Piscine Researcher Critical Bounties

Last updated on March 6, 2020 at 4:31 p.m. EST.

Piscine Researcher Monster Hunter World

There are six Critical Bounties that are given to players from the Piscine Researcher. Most will give you a small reward, but the final quest will give you a Gold Wyverian Print that you can redeem at the Elder Melder . That, my friends, is reason enough alone to grind through this list of tasks, as the Gold Wyverian Print can be redeemed for gems, extremely rare crafting materials. It should be noted, though, that as of the Iceborne DLC, hunters can receive Gold Wyverian Prints for helping lower-ranked hunters with quests. For example, if you are Master Rank and help someone defeat Nergigante on High Rank, you might score a Gold Wyverian Print for your trouble.

Below is a list of Piscine Researcher tasks to complete:

  • Ancient Forest Research Help - Pink Paraxus Capture
  • Wildspire Waste Research Help - Sushfish Capture
  • Coral Highlands Research Help - Gunpowderfish Capture
  • Rotten Vale Research Help - Goldenfish Capture
  • Elder Recess Research Help - Platinumfish Capture
  • Research Help - Capture the Ancient

When you are about to head out on an expedition, look at the world map. As you hover over a location, you’ll get a key on the right side that gives you some important details. One of these will be at the bottom under the Field Researcher section. If you see the Piscine Researcher listed there, you’ll be able to find them at that location and get their quests, assuming you don’t already have it.

research help mhw

If you’d like to see which critical bounties you already have active, which ones are done, and which ones you’ve yet to pick up, visit the Resource Center in Astera or Seliana. Active Critical Bounties will be in the list and the text around them will be lit up. Completed Critical Bounties will be in the list by greyed out, and if you have yet to obtain the critical bounty from the Piscine Researcher, it will be absent from the list entirely. Use that information to see what critical bounties you need to finish by cross referencing it with my list.

It should also be noted that once you finish the first five critical bounties on the list, the sixth will be given in a random location it seems. No fear, just bring up the World Map and you can scan each location for the Piscine Researcher. Locate and pay them a visit in order to get the final critical bounty to complete the set.

Now that you are aware of all critical bounties from the Piscine Researcher in Monster Hunter: World, visit our  Monster Hunter: World hub to check in on what else you’ve been missing thus far in your journey.

Monster Hunter World: How To Catch The Living Fossil

Here's everything you need to know about how to complete the Capture the Ancient bounty and capture the Petricanth fish in Monster Hunter World.

Quick Links

Where to find the petricanth, how to catch the prehistoric fish.

The prehistoric fish known as the Petricanth is an addition to the Endemic Life monsters in Monster Hunter World and it is the rarest fish in the whole game. Catching the Petricanth is a challenging experience.

Related: Monster Hunter World: How To Defeat Barroth

You'll need to catch one of these to complete the "Research Help: Capture the Ancient" bounty, plus, you'll be rewarded with a trophy/achievement and the ability to place it in your house. Our guide entails the fishing locations of prehistoric fish in Monster Hunter World and mentions how to catch this rarest fish faster.

In the world of Monster Hunter World, the Petricanth spawns only at two locations , and those are:

  • At a small pond in Sector 15 of Rotten Vale.
  • The Eastern Camp in Sector 8 of Elder's Recess . It rarely spawns there, but still, the chances are high.

Note: If you have the Iceborne DLC for Monster Hunter World, it can also be pawswapped with plunderers in the Rotten Vale.

Rotten Vale, by far, is the best place to catch Petricanth. However, you will at least need to have unlocked five-star quests in Monster Hunter World to increase the chances for the fish to spawn in Rotten Vale.

The steps below will help you to catch the Petricanth quickly.

  • Firstly, depart for an expedition on Rotten Vale at the central Camp in Area 11 .
  • Now open up your map and go to the level below that to find Area 15 . Now, put a marker on your map at the location shown in the image above and let the Scout Flies guide you there.
  • Once you reach Area 15, go to the very end of it, and you will see two small blue ponds . However, you will never see any fish on the left one, so you need to head for the right one at this point.
  • The ponds will mostly have green and yellow fish there. However, if you get lucky, you will find Petricanth there.
  • End your expedition and start a new one if you do not find the Petricanth. Then repeat all the steps we have mentioned so far. Since the Petricanth is a rare spawn, you will find it in your first five to ten tries.
  • So when you do find the Petricanth, equip your Fishing Rod , and throw the fishing rod near the Petricanth. While trying to catch the Petricanth, do not wiggle your bait too much as it will scare the fish away.
  • Other fish in the pond might cause you problems by biting the bait. However, you must focus on catching them, and eventually, you will get rid of them.

If you are having trouble getting the Petricanth to bite, then we recommend using the Baitbug . You can find some of them near the pond.

Once you reel the Petricanth, you will achieve the “A Living Fossil Achievement” trophy and get 500 RP points . Once you have caught the Petricanth, you can place it inside the Aquarium in your home and admire it. To do this, go back to your living quarter, talk to your housekeeper, select "Place Your Pet" , and then choose the Petricanth. Next, walk up to the Aquarium, and you will get the option to admire.

Robe shipwreck researchers look for clues to bust myths and build Dutch connections

A painting of an old wooden sailing ship

Residents of a town in South Australia's south-east are being enlisted in research into a shipwreck that killed 16 Dutch sailors in 1857 soon after offloading 400 gold miners from China.

More scrutiny is also on objects thought to have come from the shipwreck of the Koning Willem de Tweede that actually may have been from other shipwrecks.

On June 30, 1857, the Koning Willem de Tweede (King William II) was run aground on Robe's Long Beach during a storm by a captain trying to save it.

Instead, the Dutch ship was "beaten to matchsticks", according to James Hunter, who is leading a project researching the disaster.

A beach with a car and dog on it

Dr Hunter, curator of naval heritage and archaeology at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, said the waves that hit it might have been up to six metres high.

"These waves were smashing into this ship repeatedly and it was a timber vessel," he said.

"It was old — by this point it had been around for several years — so it didn't take long for it to start to break apart."

Dr Hunter and conservator Heather Berry were part of a team that found what appears to be the site of the shipwreck off Long Beach in 2022.

It is buried in metres of sand and has not yet been reached by divers.

Objects washed up from ship

The ship had come to Robe from Hong Kong so the Chinese gold miners on board could avoid a tax on immigrants arriving by sea in Victoria .

Because the wreck happened so quickly — in perhaps about half an hour — very little was removed from the ship, with the focus instead on saving the crew.

However, Dr Hunter and Ms Berry, from the Silentworld Foundation which funds research into maritime archaeology and heritage, believe many items from the ship would have washed up on Long Beach since.

"There's a lot of ceramics that have washed up over the years, glass and of course bits of the ship itself – maybe parts that were being used or maybe other parts that were being stored in case of need for repairs," Ms Berry said.

Advice on conservation

Ms Berry has put together a booklet about how to conserve items people find from shipwrecks that applies particularly to Robe but also to other places around Australia.

A small old building with three people standing at the front, one of them holding a book

Crockery is commonly found but Ms Berry said it could disintegrate if it was not looked after properly after being under water for sometimes hundreds of years.

"If you don't desalinate them properly then you will lose the glaze because, as the salt recrystallises, it just pops off that glaze," she said.

"It's quite impressive to actually look at – I've seen a few examples of it – but it is ultimately sad because you've lost that information."

The booklet is being launched in Robe today with a workshop on the same topic planned for tomorrow at the Robe Customs House Maritime Museum.

People can bring in objects they have found for advice on conserving, which Dr Hunter and Ms Berry can examine to determine historical value.

Connections to today

A bell believed to have come from the ship was rung at Robe Primary School from its founding in 1886 until about 15 years ago to bring students in from lunch and recess.

A replica now stands in its place with the original in the local maritime museum.

If Dr Hunter is not completely sure the bell came from the Koning Willem de Tweede he is very sceptical about a cannon near the museum overlooking Town Beach and an arch commemorating the Chinese migrants of the 1850s.

Four primary school students ringing a bell under a shelter

Because of its British design, he thinks it may have come from another ship wrecked near Robe in 1857, the Sultana.

"There's all sorts of things that suggest it could well have been — but maybe not — so the first thing I'd really like to do is nail down where that stuff came from — the things that we already know about," he said.

Building Dutch relations

Most of the funding for the project comes from the Dutch government as part of a push by the Netherlands to strengthen ties with Australia.

The Dutch embassy's cultural attaché, Xenia Hanusiak, said the ship was one of five or six Dutch commercial ships that brought Chinese to Australia at the time.

She said many Australians knew about the Dutch East India Company ships that wrecked in Western Australia in the 1600s but the later history was less well known.

"Even though the Dutch had been travelling by happenstance in the 17th century to the shores and some of the boats were shipwrecked, this we would see as an example of when the Dutch perhaps became interested in settling in Australia for mercantile benefits," Ms Hanusiak said.

While in Robe, Dr Hunter and Ms Berry also visited the old police stables handed over to the National Trust six years ago to look at how objects there could be preserved.

Robe National Trust branch secretary Valerie Monaghan said it was good to have them in town.

"People with metal detectors still pick up things on Long Beach and it’s really important that we keep track of what’s found and keep the things that are really worth keeping," she said.

Researchers plan to return to Robe next summer to use more techniques to look into the wreck, including probing, using metal detectors and fanning (waving sand away with the hands).

About 1 in 4 u.s. teachers say their school went into a gun-related lockdown in the last school year.

Twenty-five years after the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado , a majority of public K-12 teachers (59%) say they are at least somewhat worried about the possibility of a shooting ever happening at their school. This includes 18% who say they’re extremely or very worried, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand public K-12 teachers’ views on school shootings, how prepared they feel for a potential active shooter, and how they feel about policies that could help prevent future shootings.

To do this, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public school K-12 teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

We also used data from our 2022 survey of U.S. parents. For that project, we surveyed 3,757 U.S. parents with at least one child younger than 18 from Sept. 20 to Oct. 2, 2022. Find more details about the survey of parents here .

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Another 31% of teachers say they are not too worried about a shooting occurring at their school. Only 7% of teachers say they are not at all worried.

This survey comes at a time when school shootings are at a record high (82 in 2023) and gun safety continues to be a topic in 2024 election campaigns .

A pie chart showing that a majority of teachers are at least somewhat worried about a shooting occurring at their school.

Teachers’ experiences with lockdowns

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that about 1 in 4 teachers say their school had a gun-related lockdown last year.

About a quarter of teachers (23%) say they experienced a lockdown in the 2022-23 school year because of a gun or suspicion of a gun at their school. Some 15% say this happened once during the year, and 8% say this happened more than once.

High school teachers are most likely to report experiencing these lockdowns: 34% say their school went on at least one gun-related lockdown in the last school year. This compares with 22% of middle school teachers and 16% of elementary school teachers.

Teachers in urban schools are also more likely to say that their school had a gun-related lockdown. About a third of these teachers (31%) say this, compared with 19% of teachers in suburban schools and 20% in rural schools.

Do teachers feel their school has prepared them for an active shooter?

About four-in-ten teachers (39%) say their school has done a fair or poor job providing them with the training and resources they need to deal with a potential active shooter.

A bar chart showing that 3 in 10 teachers say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for an active shooter.

A smaller share (30%) give their school an excellent or very good rating, and another 30% say their school has done a good job preparing them.

Teachers in urban schools are the least likely to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter. About one-in-five (21%) say this, compared with 32% of teachers in suburban schools and 35% in rural schools.

Teachers who have police officers or armed security stationed in their school are more likely than those who don’t to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter (36% vs. 22%).

Overall, 56% of teachers say they have police officers or armed security stationed at their school. Majorities in rural schools (64%) and suburban schools (56%) say this, compared with 48% in urban schools.

Only 3% of teachers say teachers and administrators at their school are allowed to carry guns in school. This is slightly more common in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Donald Trump in 2020 than in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Joe Biden (5% vs. 1%).

What strategies do teachers think could help prevent school shootings?

A bar chart showing that 69% of teachers say better mental health treatment would be highly effective in preventing school shootings.

The survey also asked teachers how effective some measures would be at preventing school shootings.

Most teachers (69%) say improving mental health screening and treatment for children and adults would be extremely or very effective.

About half (49%) say having police officers or armed security in schools would be highly effective, while 33% say the same about metal detectors in schools.

Just 13% say allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. Seven-in-ten teachers say this would be not too or not at all effective.

How teachers’ views differ by party

A dot plot showing that teachers’ views of strategies to prevent school shootings differ by political party.

Republican and Republican-leaning teachers are more likely than Democratic and Democratic-leaning teachers to say each of the following would be highly effective:

  • Having police officers or armed security in schools (69% vs. 37%)
  • Having metal detectors in schools (43% vs. 27%)
  • Allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools (28% vs. 3%)

And while majorities in both parties say improving mental health screening and treatment would be highly effective at preventing school shootings, Democratic teachers are more likely than Republican teachers to say this (73% vs. 66%).

Parents’ views on school shootings and prevention strategies

In fall 2022, we asked parents a similar set of questions about school shootings.

Roughly a third of parents with K-12 students (32%) said they were extremely or very worried about a shooting ever happening at their child’s school. An additional 37% said they were somewhat worried.

As is the case among teachers, improving mental health screening and treatment was the only strategy most parents (63%) said would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. And allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools was seen as the least effective – in fact, half of parents said this would be not too or not at all effective. This question was asked of all parents with a child younger than 18, regardless of whether they have a child in K-12 schools.

Like teachers, parents’ views on strategies for preventing school shootings differed by party.

The Research-Backed Benefits of Daily Rituals

  • Michael I. Norton

research help mhw

A survey of more than 130 HBR readers asked how they use rituals to start their days, psych themselves up for stressful challenges, and transition when the workday is done.

While some may cringe at forced corporate rituals, research shows that personal and team rituals can actually benefit the way we work. The authors’ expertise on the topic over the past decade, plus a survey of nearly 140 HBR readers, explores the ways rituals can set us up for success before work, get us psyched up for important presentations, foster a strong team culture, and help us wind down at the end of the day.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has incredible potential to transform the economy, improve the way we work, and enhance our way of life. The global race to scale up and adopt AI is on, and Canada is at the forefront of this technology. To make sure we can seize every opportunity in the economy of the future, and set every generation up for success, we need to scale up our innovation ambitions. And do it in a way that brings everyone along. For Millennials and Gen Z, who feel their hard work isn’t paying off like it did for previous generations, we must invest in good-paying opportunities that help them get ahead. That’s why we’re focused on creating more good jobs, including in innovation and technology, which are among the highest paying of all industries.

AI is already unlocking massive growth in industries across the economy. Many Canadians are already feeling the benefits of using AI to work smarter and faster. The rapid advance of generative AI today will unlock immense economic potential for Canada, significantly improving productivity and reducing the time workers have to spend on repetitive tasks. Researchers and companies in Canada are also using AI to create incredible new innovations and job opportunities across all facets of the Canadian economy, from drug discovery to energy efficiency to housing innovation. In the past year, job growth in AI increased by nearly one third in Canada – among the highest growth of any sector. And most AI jobs pay well above the average income.

Canada has a world-leading AI ecosystem – from development, to commercialization, to safety. We have an advantage that can make sure Canadian values and Canadian ideas help shape this globally in-demand technology. Canada was the first country in the world to introduce a national AI strategy and has invested over $2 billion since 2017 to support AI and digital research and innovation. Since then, countries around the world have begun investing significant funding and efforts into AI to advance their economies, particularly in computing infrastructure. In order to maintain Canada’s competitive edge, and secure good paying jobs and job security for generations of young Canadians, we must raise the bar.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced a $2.4 billion package of measures from the upcoming Budget 2024 to secure Canada’s AI advantage. These investments will accelerate job growth in Canada’s AI sector and beyond, boost productivity by helping researchers and businesses develop and adopt AI, and ensure this is done responsibly.

These measures include:

  • Investing $2 billion to build and provide access to computing capabilities and technological infrastructure for Canada’s world-leading AI researchers, start-ups, and scale-ups. As part of this investment, we will soon be consulting with AI stakeholders to inform the launch of a new AI Compute Access Fund to provide near-term support to researchers and industry. We will also develop a new Canadian AI Sovereign Compute Strategy to catalyze the development of Canadian-owned and located AI infrastructure. Ensuring access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure will attract more global AI investment to Canada, develop and recruit the best talent, and help Canadian businesses compete and succeed on the world stage.

  • Investing $100 million in the NRC IRAP AI Assist Program to help small and medium-sized businesses scale up and increase productivity by building and deploying new AI solutions. This will help companies incorporate AI into their businesses and take on research, product development, testing, and validation work for new AI-based solutions.
  • Supporting workers who may be impacted by AI, such as creative industries, with $50 million for the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, which will provide new skills training for workers in potentially disrupted sectors and communities.
  • Creating a new Canadian AI Safety Institute, with $50 million to further the safe development and deployment of AI. The Institute, which will leverage input from stakeholders and work in coordination with international partners, will help Canada better understand and protect against the risks of advanced or nefarious AI systems, including to specific communities.
  • Strengthening enforcement of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, with $5.1 million for the Office of the AI and Data Commissioner. The proposed Act aims to guide AI innovation in a positive direction to help ensure Canadians are protected from potential risks by ensuring the responsible adoption of AI by Canadian businesses.

Today’s announcement is about investing in innovation and economic growth to secure Canada’s world-leading AI advantage today and for generations to come. This will create good-paying opportunities for every generation, boost innovation across the economy, raise productivity, and accelerate economic growth – and it’s just one of the things that we are going to be doing in Budget 2024. Alongside these measures, we’re building more homes faster, ensuring every kid has the food they need, investing in health care, making life more affordable, and creating good jobs to make sure every generation can get ahead.

“AI has the potential to transform the economy. And our potential lies in capitalizing on the undeniable Canadian advantage. These investments in Budget 2024 will help harness the full potential of AI so Canadians, and especially young Canadians, can get good-paying jobs while raising our productivity, and growing our economy. This announcement is a major investment in our future, in the future of workers, in making sure that every industry, and every generation, has the tools to succeed and prosper in the economy of tomorrow.” The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
“Today, we are making a significant investment to boost our economic growth. This will keep Canada a global leader in AI and ensure we are at the very cutting-edge of new technologies. Nurse's Research Highlights Importance of Maternal Wellness

by Carolina Zimbron

Mental health is a significant issue in America. One rural Ohio mom is using her research to help others through various mental health struggles.

Dr. Marcia Williams , assistant professor of nursing at Cedarville University, presented her research on the importance of postpartum maternal mental health at the Eastern Nursing Research conference in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, April 5.

Seeking to fill the resource void on postpartum mental health, Williams began a yearlong mixed method study that looked at the type of mental health care women prefer postpartum and the stigma that comes from depression during their pregnancy.

“What I found in my research is that women have significant health care barriers during their pregnancies,” Williams said. “The greatest barrier is a lack of childcare during medical appointments, but I also learned the women prefer to care for any mental health issues in an informal process using a self-care approach.”

From the beginning of her research, Williams was concerned about the effects untreated mild or moderate perinatal depression can have on women and their families.

“I was a labor and delivery nurse and one of the big things that I learned from taking care of moms was that maternal mental health doesn’t only affect the mother, it also affects the child,” Williams said. “The months following birth are when bonding occurs between mom and the child, so if the mom is not feeling well, that bond can be disrupted, as well as the care to her family.”

From her research and experience as a nurse, Williams understands that moms are foundational to their families. Therefore, caring for the health and mental health of moms is essential for the family unit. Williams has devoted her professional life to health care and recently completed her doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Utah. Her undergraduate degree in nursing and master’s degree in nursing -  family nurse practitioner , were earned at Cedarville University.

Her love for Cedarville University and its mission is the reason Williams has devoted her professional career to teaching Cedarville students and working in the Dayton region.

"Cedarville taught me how to be a nurse and to view medical care from a biblical perspective, so teaching from this perspective and preparing our future nurses is important to me.”

- Dr. Marcia Williams

Not only has her research helped Ohio moms, but her preparation for this conference has also helped her teach students how to prepare this kind of presentation. “Right now, I am teaching them how to create their own research posters, which they will be presenting soon at Cedarville's annual Scholar Symposium,” Williams said.

Williams is excited to use her newly developed skills as a researcher in the classroom. “I want to equip students with the ability to practice with excellence, teach with confidence and improve care through research,” she said.

Located in southwest Ohio,  Cedarville University  is a Baptist university with  undergraduate  programs in arts, sciences, and professional programs, and  graduate  programs. With an enrollment of 5,456 students in 175 areas of study, Cedarville is one of the largest private universities in Ohio and is recognized nationally for its authentic Christian community, rigorous academic programs, and high graduation and retention rates. Vrutti Patel standing outside.

Biology major’s research experiences inspire her to help others

The science behind saving lives has always fascinated Vrutti Patel. Even the most mundane topics in her biology lectures captivate her.

“We’re learning about the endocrine system and how it secretes hormones, how it knows when to secrete hormones and what the optimum amount is,” she says. “Like, you can be secreting a lot, or you can be secreting less, but you would always need that optimal amount. Every time I get to learn something new, I’m fascinated — and that makes me even more interested in biology.”

When she transferred to the University of South Carolina from Newberry College, the fourth-year biological sciences major wanted to expand her horizons and get out of her comfort zone.

“I was looking for more opportunities to help me get where I’m going and really be passionate about what I’m doing,” says Patel, who has always wanted to be a doctor.

In pursuit of her goal, she looked into research being done on campus and reached out to faculty members to see if she could get involved. The first to respond was Meisam Arjmandi, an assistant professor and the director of the Translational Auditory Neuroscience Lab in the Arnold School of Public Health. The lab focuses on strengthening its understanding of human communication and improving the quality of life for people with hearing impairments.

Not only did the research topic appeal to her academically, but it also appealed to her personally. When her brother was young, he had challenges that prevented him from reaching language development stages for people his age.

I want to be surrounded by people who have the same mindset as me. It’s also important for me to inspire other individuals as well. If talking about myself inspires one person — even just a bit — I’m happy with it. And that’s why I went for a leadership position, so I can give back to the community.

As an undergraduate assistant researcher, Patel listened to audio files of children with hearing impairments speaking. She input data from those files into coding software and analyzed it. She says the experience helped her gain the confidence to take on more rigorous opportunities in the future.

“I acquired the skill of data analysis, and I learned how to code, which was a very good experience,” she says. “Now, I can apply these skills to clinical experience, which is more hands on.”

When she came to USC, she wanted to get involved in on-campus organizations, but she found the time and financial commitments required by some to be daunting. Then she heard about the Alliance for Women in STEM and liked its message of female empowerment. Participation in club events was voluntary and the environment was stress-free, she says. Today, she serves as the organization’s treasurer.

“I want to be surrounded by people who have the same mindset as me,” she says. “It’s also important for me to inspire other individuals as well.
