The Ideal Career Choice Analytical Essay

Making a career choice is one of the most difficult decisions that people are faced with in their lives. Many considerations should be made before making a career choice. For instance, a person may want to choose a career that he or she has a passion for, but the career may not be rewarding moneywise. On the other hand, a person may want to choose a career that is rewarding in terms of finances, but this may force him or her to do something that he or she does not love to do.

The ideal career choice would be the case in which a person pursues something he or she really loves to do, and luckily the same turns out to be financially rewarding. “In most of these cases, the person actually has a natural flair for the career and thus, he or she does not encounter major difficulties while working” (Rides).

For instance, a person with a natural flair for athletics would make a perfect career choice if he or she chose athletics as a career, and it turned out to be lucrative. Another example would be a person with a flair for computer programming.

If this person chose computer programming as a career and it turned out to be lucrative, he or she would have made an ideal career choice. “As such, career choice is a decision, which entails critical thinking of the diversified choices available to an individual” (Smith).

However, there is common knowledge that people will not normally get financial benefit from doing the things they really love doing. There are many reasons behind this. One of the main reasons is unemployment, among others such as poor career planning. To explain the latter, it would be unwise for an introvert to study a course in a college that would lead to a career that involved public speaking.

Therefore, an introvert who studied political science or communication might pursue unrelated careers even if he or she has a passion for political science or communication. Such kind of people, together with those who lack employment opportunities are therefore, forced to make more pragmatic career choices.

Most people make career choices that are not related to what they love doing, in other words, their passion. This has been fuelled by the high rate of unemployment in the world, which has seen people pursuing careers that are unrelated to what they study in college. “For instance, it is common to see an engineer working as a human resource manager, a social scientist working as a journalist or even a teacher in an unrelated career” (Rides).

This has been because of unemployment making people indulge in careers that are unrelated to their subjects of study in college in order to make a living, as they wait to get a perfect job. The sad reality is that some of these people wait for a lifetime to get those jobs.

On the other hand, people who stick to what they love doing in most cases get frustrated. This is because it may take a year or two to get a job after college. After a long period of unemployment, one may get a job that is not worth writing home about. “The job may have limited financial rewards and it may lack opportunities for growth” (Rides). This has contributed to the occurrence of the aforementioned career-switches.

From the discussion above, it is clear that career choice should ideally be dictated by a person’s passion and natural talent. However, it is good to be dynamic in career choice in order to ensure that one balances life’s demands with passion. If one is able to secure a well-paying job related to what he or she love to do, then that is okay.

However, a person may be unable to secure a well-paying job that is related to his or her natural flair, something that disappoints most graduates after college. This makes people indulge in jobs that are not in their line of career. However, such decisions bring about major limitations, in that the person may not be satisfied with the job that he or she settles for. This will obviously lead to stress and burnout that may affect the quality of work that he or she delivers.

Despite this, the main consideration when choosing a job or career path should be one’s passion and not financial benefits that come in hand with the career. “This is because with passion, one is able to produce quality work, as they love what they are doing and end up being happy in life regardless of the benefit package associated with the career they are doing”(Smith).

Globalisation has led the world to one big nation where different cultures and people come together. For this reason, newer career options are emerging, primarily seeing a lot of scope in India. Even the traditional fields have diverted to emerge into newer aspects to cater to the needs of the generation of tomorrow. There is an infinite variety of professions and jobs to cater to the varying interest of the students.

The movie ‘3 Idiots’ shows the consequences of a situation when one start a course of study due to some kind of external pressure. And it is universal that a lot of students end up in a situation like that only. The lack of proper guidance and counselling worsens the situation. Consequently, students are seen getting puzzled in the dark and making wrong career-choices. The ever-increasing number of job- seekers, ill-equipped to make right decisions on this matter, has generated a lot of frustration, hopelessness, alienation, unrest and acts of indiscipline. It also means wastage of human resources and national wealth.

A child is merely a teenager and he/she knows so little of the world. With so many choices and so much to consider, finding the right career path becomes a herculean task. Inevitably, the kind of education, educational institution, friends, surroundings, environment and parents, all play a major role in choosing the career of a student. Choosing a career also involves considering the amount of money one can invest, the time one is willing to give to the college and the place to attend the college. Additionally, the various latest trends should not be ignored.

With all these factors involved, selecting a career path is an elongated process that should be processed wisely and intelligently. Selecting the right option involves various steps. A good way to start is by some self-examination. First of all, one should analyse their own self or what could be their talents. These are the things that one is naturally good at. They can be discovered and developed, but not taught. It can be followed by conducting some research. Researching is about being well informed to make one of the most important decisions of life. If one has the information, mecan select from the different courses that offer a balance between my abilities and interests.

As a final step, compare all the different options. One needs to wisely consider variables such as college, job offers or scholarships. Also, students should make sure that while choosing the options they should zero down to more than one option. So that in case of plan A becomes unachievable then students can work upon plan B without wasting time or getting disheartened.

What is also needed is that the school should involve in counselling sessions for the students wherein all the options are discussed in detail. The pros and cons of each option should be kept opened in front of the the students. An ability assessment can also be taken to highlight the strength and interest of the students. Online career assessment websites are also available which gives students the opportunity to answer the questions relating to students interest and then giving an immediate feedback about the career option that fits best with their personality.

How to Write an Awesome Essay About Your Career Goals

  • Before you begin, ask yourself a few key questions like:
  • What are my short-term and long-term career goals?
  • Where do I see myself in ten years?
  • What events in my life have led me to have these goals?
  • What major will help me reach my goals?
  • What skills do I need to reach my goals?
  • What impact do I want to have on society?

Career Goals Essay Template

Need more inspiration.

After you brainstorm the responses to these questions, look for common themes, or pick out the most interesting stories. You can build your main essay “thesis” or idea around this.

Once you’ve got the main idea, create an outline to put your ideas into essay format. This will give you a general idea of structure.

You can use the career essays template below to give you some ideas. But remember that some rules are meant to be broken, so don’t be afraid to be innovative and think outside the box!

Also, when you’re done, head over to Going Merry to apply for the Career Goals scholarship essay bundle (one essay, one application, multiple scholarships!). You might as well make that essay count. Sign up for Going Merry to apply for scholarships more efficiently.

career goals essay

Here’s a paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown:

Paragraph 1 : Establish the main theme of what you’re going to talk about. It should also grab the reader’s attention. For example, instead of starting your essay with something generic (e.g. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a zoologist), get creative with it! Try something like My greatest memory as a young girl was going to the zoo for the first time or While most kids play house or school, I always wanted to play zookeeper.

Paragraph 2 : Elaborate on what inspired your career goals. Perhaps it was a relative, a TV show, or simply an experience that you had. Remember that old writing adage, “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, try to demonstrate your interest with story or description.

Paragraph 3 : Discuss your short-term career goals and your intended major. How will your intended major help you reach these goals? What skills do you need to learn to reach them? At the end of the paragraph, try discussing how your short-term goals can help you achieve your long-term goals.

Paragraph 4 : Focus on your long-term goals and the impact that you hope to have on society. If you’re not sure what your long-term goals are, don’t sweat it; they’ll probably change anyways. You can instead focus on the difference you’d like to make overall. And don’t worry too much about the size of the impact…remember that just doing what you’re truly passionate about has a massive impact on those around you.

The last paragraph is your conclusion. You can use this paragraph to summarize what you discussed in the previous few paragraphs. If you want to be even more creative, try ending your essay with a question for your readers or a new insight. Good luck!

And now that you’re ready with that essay, put it to good use! You can recycle that same essay, when applying for the Career Goals Scholarship Bundle. Your career goals essay demands a laser-like focus. A personal statement, by contrast, allows for some flexibility in its content, though you can – and often should – discuss your career goals. But a career goals essay has a particular and packed agenda. In fact, the prompt for a career goals essay could actually include multiple questions, and in such cases, you want to make sure you address each of them.

For example, in 2022, Kellogg asked applicants to its one-year program to respond to the following prompt: “Please discuss your post-MBA career goal, the current experience you will leverage to support the transition, and the Kellogg 1Y opportunities that will help you reach this goal.”

This prompt has three parts: (1) What do you want to do post-MBA ? (2) Why is the 1Y program appropriate for you? And (3) what experience has so far prepared you to succeed in your target role?

So, always pay close attention to your target school’s prompt to ensure that you answer all the questions within its “single” question.

Three elements of a successful career goals essay

In addition to having a distinct theme , your career goals essay should achieve the following:

  • Highlight specific career achievements. Choose from your most notable or defining experiences. These could be related to your work, community involvement, or extracurricular activities. The experiences you select should showcase your leadership skills , creative thinking, collaborative abilities, and personal reflections about what you learned or gained.
  • Explain why your experiences and influences make your career goal a logical and wise choice.
  • Demonstrate why you are suited to a particular field as a result of your education, experience, abilities, and enthusiasm. Ideally, the material you choose to include will also allow you to prove your knowledge about industry trends and suggest how your abilities and strengths can help you contribute to that field.

It’s a very tall order to achieve all this.

Putting these elements together to create your goals essay

Let’s take a look at a sample MBA Goals Essay and see how these three key elements are incorporated.

You should be able to easily recognize why the writer’s opening is attention-getting for all the right reasons. The writer introduces herself as the supremely busy executive she visualizes becoming in the future. She trades large amounts of stock, rushes off to a Zoom conference, hurries downstairs, flags down a taxi, then hops on a plane. As she describes this whirlwind of activity, we can practically feel her heart pumping.

After establishing her voice and personality in this opening, she offers context for her MBA goal. Notice that in writing about her work as an accountant for a major firm, she provides relevant details, including how many years she has been in the field, her bilingualism, and her specialty area as an auditor. This information is her springboard to explain why she is pursuing an MBA: she’s bursting out of her limited role as an accountant. Her eyes and ambition are set on a larger playing field as an international investment manager.

Write an essay, not a list or CV

Outstanding career goals essays are not lists of an applicant’s roles and achievements. Instead, they have a narrative flow and arc that convey the candidate’s palpable excitement about their career choice. This writer’s enthusiastic, dreamy first paragraph achieves this, and she returns to that image at the end, where she paints her idealized (if frantically busy) future. She also proves her seriousness by noting that she registered for the CFA exam.

Connect your career goals to your reasons for choosing a particular program

Many essay questions, especially those for MBA programs , will ask why you have chosen the school you’re applying to. Be prepared to respond knowledgeably and enthusiastically. And the only way to become knowledgeable – and enthusiastic – is by visiting campus in-person or virtually, attending student recruitment meetings, participating in forums, reading student blogs, watching videos of students speaking about their experiences, communicating directly with students and/or recent alumni, and otherwise doing your homework. As part of your research, make sure you have familiarized yourself with the courses and specializations that are relevant to your goals.

Summary Tips

  • Focus on answering each and every question asked in a career goals essay prompt. Often, there is more than one.
  • Highlight specific achievements vividly and in a way that shows that your career choice is logical for you.
  • Do the research so you can write about why the school is a good fit for you and do so with genuine enthusiasm.

Essay on Career Choice

Students are often asked to write an essay on Career Choice in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Career Choice

What is career choice.

Career choice means deciding what job you want to do in the future. It’s like picking a path to follow as you grow up. This choice can shape your life, because you spend a lot of time working.

Why It Matters

Choosing a career is important because it’s about your happiness and well-being. A good fit can make you feel fulfilled and excited to work each day.

How to Choose

To pick a career, think about what you enjoy and are good at. Also, learn about different jobs and what they involve.

Asking for Help

It’s okay to ask for advice from family, teachers, or career counselors. They can offer valuable insights and help you make a smart choice.

250 Words Essay on Career Choice

What is a career choice.

A career choice is a big decision about what job you want to do in your life. It’s like picking a path to walk on that will take you through your work life. This choice is important because it can affect how happy you are, how much money you make, and what your future looks like.

Knowing Your Interests

Before choosing a career, think about what you like to do. If you love drawing, maybe you can be an artist or a designer. If you enjoy helping people, perhaps a doctor or a teacher is a good fit for you. Your interests can guide you to a job that you will enjoy.

Skills and Education

Your skills are things you are good at. Some jobs need special skills or education. For example, to be a doctor, you need to study a lot and understand medicine. Knowing what skills you have can help you choose the right career.

Future of the Job

Think about what jobs will be needed in the future. Some jobs might not be as important later on, while others will be more in demand. Choosing a career that has a good future can be a smart move.

Making the Decision

Choosing a career can take time. Talk to people who do the job you like, ask questions, and maybe even try doing it for a short time. It’s your future, so take your time to make a good choice. Remember, it’s okay to change your mind later if you find something that fits you better.

500 Words Essay on Career Choice

Career choice means picking a job that you will do for many years. It’s like selecting what game to play or what food to eat, but it’s about what work you want to do. When you choose a career, you think about what you like to do, what you are good at, and what jobs are available.

Why is Career Choice Important?

Picking a career is very important because it decides what you will be doing to earn money. If you choose something you love, you will enjoy going to work every day. If you choose only for money, you might not be happy. It is also important because it helps you plan your education. Knowing what job you want can tell you what subjects to study and what skills to learn.

How to Know What Career to Choose?

To know what career to choose, start by thinking about what you enjoy. Do you like drawing? Maybe you can be an artist. Do you like helping people? Maybe a doctor or a teacher is a good choice for you. You can also ask your family and teachers what they think you are good at. They can give you ideas about jobs that fit your skills.

Learning About Different Jobs

You can learn about different jobs in many ways. You can read books about different careers or search the internet. You can also talk to people who do the jobs you are interested in. Ask them what they do every day and what they like about their job. This can help you understand if you would like that job too.

The Role of Education in Career Choice

Education is very important when you choose a career. Some jobs need you to go to school for many years, like being a doctor or a lawyer. Other jobs might need you to learn a special skill, like cooking for a chef or coding for a computer programmer. School helps you learn these things so you can do the job you want.

Changing Your Mind

It’s okay to change your mind about your career choice. As you grow up, you learn more about yourself and the world. You might discover new jobs that you didn’t know about before. It’s okay to pick a new career if you find something that fits you better.

Choosing a career is a big decision, but it should also be fun. It’s about finding what you love to do and making it part of your life. Remember, it’s okay to change your mind and it’s okay to take your time to decide. Talk to people, learn about different jobs, and think about what makes you happy. Your career choice is a big part of your adventure in life, so make it a good one!

How to Make Better Decisions About Your Career

  • Timothy Yen

short essay on choice of career

No, it doesn’t involve a Magic 8-Ball.

Making decisions is hard — especially when you’re trying to make big career decisions. This five-step framework can help you focus on what’s important.

  • What are your feelings telling you? Think about the kind of work you’re doing now, or the kind of work you’re planning to do. Brainstorm and jot down ideas of different careers you’re considering. What feelings come up?
  • What matters to you? Take a psychological assessment or complete an exercise that will help you identify your values.  Understanding your values will allow you to make choices that align directly with the things you care about.
  • What matters to other people? Just as it’s important to get clear on what matters to you, it’s also important to consider how your decision will impact your loved ones. Ask them for their own thoughts, input, and feelings.
  • What is the reality of the situation? Be objective and consider the realities surrounding your options, not your assumptions. Otherwise, you might end up having false expectations or feeling disappointed by your choices.
  • How do I put the pieces together? Once you’ve answered these four questions, review all the information you’ve just discovered. You should come to your final decision. If you don’t revisit the previous steps.

short essay on choice of career

English Summary

Choice of a Career Essay

Everyone has to make a choice of a career or profession at one stage of life or another. It depends upon many factors such as one’s taste and temperament and aptitude, training and qualifications, knowledge and experience, background and resourcefulness.

As such it needs a lot of cool thinking and careful planning. As young persons are immature to make a right choice of a career, a heavy responsibility lies on the shoulders of their parents and educationists to guide them.

No doubt, in some public schools and universities vocational guidance facilities have already been provided. But they are not adequate enough to meet the needs of the youngsters.

There are many professions available for a young person such as law medicine, engineering, government and private posts, high executives in trade and commerce and industry, besides a large number of petty posts require experience.

As said above, the choice of a career must be according to one’s taste and temperament, aptitude and out-look. It is wrong to suppose that everybody who studies law or medicine, would be a successful lawyer or a capable doctor. The same thing holds good in trade and commerce engineering and the films.

A thin and lean man with sickly disposition will be in the army like a round peg in a square hole. One who loves books and has a fascination for research will form a good scholar, while another who has a keen power of observation, a sharp eye and a steady hand would be a successful doctor or surgeon.

One living in a village cut off from the city would be contented with the life of a farmer or a petty shopkeeper while another possessing ready wit, debating capacity and a judicious mind would form a successful statesman or an eminent advocate.

In good old days, the choice of a career was not a problem because of the absence of any cut-throat competition and the limited needs of the people. But now the situation has changed. Even for an ordinary post there are thousands of applicants.

Moreover, the present age is the age of specialization and expertise. The result is that there is keen competition in all walks of life. Without expert knowledge and high technical qualifica tions, it is futile to dream of producing a good poet.

The choice of a profession has to be made at an early stage, particularly, at the Higher Secondary Stage and work steadily to acquire high technical qualifications and experience.

Some other important factors in the choice of a career are the financial resources of a candidate and the recommendations that he can command. Some careers require a heavy financial investment in the training.

A strong recommendation also counts much in some technical, medical and other institutions. But the students who like to adopt such professions must have high mental calibre.

Last but not the least requirement for attaining a high post Intelligence and diligence, strong will-power, honesty of purpose and prompt despatch of work. Sympathy and understanding, fair dealing others, patience and fortitude are some of the other virtues that a high officer must possess.

Short Essay On Choice Of Career

Essay Examples

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person can make in their life. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of what career to pursue; each person must take their own interest, skills, and life goals into consideration. It is essential to find a career that is fulfilling and enjoyable, but also one that is financially and emotionally sustainable.

The first step in choosing a career is to assess your interests, skills, and goals. What do you enjoy doing? What are you naturally good at? What do you ultimately want to achieve in your life? Consider your answers to these questions and choose a career that aligns with them. It is important to be honest with yourself and to make a choice that fits your life and values.

Next, research potential careers. Examine the job descriptions, salary expectations, and educational requirements of the different positions you are considering. Consider the working conditions, such as hours, location, and travel. Evaluate the impact the career will have on your personal and professional life.

Once you have narrowed down your choices, reach out to people in the field. Speak with professionals who are currently working in your desired career. Ask them questions about their experiences and get advice on how you can make a successful transition into the field.

Once you have made your choice, make an action plan. What steps do you need to take to start working in your chosen career? Make a list of the things you need to do, such as obtaining certifications or attending classes, and create a timeline to keep yourself on track.

Making a career choice is not easy. It requires thoughtful consideration and research, but it can be an incredibly rewarding process. Take your time and choose a career that you will be proud of and that will bring you joy and satisfaction.

Short Essay On Choice Of Career

In this essay we are going to talk about the Choice Of Career. We all work hard during our days of study in school as well as in college. Have any of us asked ourselves why? Well, most of the answers would be to get into a career and to be successful in life. Now this wanting or rather a tiny wish of having a career eventually turns into a need, especially for the people of today’s generation. The reason is simply because they are determined and they stand strong and firm on their grounds, sticking to what they wish to do in life and what they wish to achieve.

Short Essay On Choice of Career

Now this being said, the point on if the person wishes to start a career or not is something that cannot be forced out or even be pressurized. It is completely their choice and there is nothing wrong in the choices that they wish to abide by. At the same time, the point of what kind of career students prefer for themselves is also something that should not be forced out. Now, in a country like ours this is something that is prominent and very common.

A lot of parents still intimidate their children by imposing their choices on them and by pressurizing them to do as per their will. They do not even give them a chance to speak up and neither are they even bothered to ask if they have any preferences or ideas of their choice. What makes things even worse with regards to career choices is the stereotypes.

Essay On Choice Of Career

They sound so illogical and absolutely senseless. For instance, keeping the stereotypes in mind, a lot of girls are not encouraged to continue their career after a certain point of time. That certain point of time refers to the time after they are married off and they have moved into another house with their husband. It gets even more complicated once they have had kids and started a family.

Most of the girls are bombarded with bitter statements like “What are you going to do by studying so much? Towards the end, you are going to sit at home looking after your husband, his family and your kids!”. “You do not have a choice; you are a woman, and you cannot think of taking your dreams forward once you are married off.” “Why do we need to spend so much time and money on your studies? Instead, we can get a rich and well-settled groom and get you married.”

“Dreams? When will you complete your studies and when will you settle down and when will your dream work out? You are a girl! When will you get married if you keep chasing your dream?” “All your friends are married, and they have settled down with their husbands and even had kids! And look at you who is still running after something that is never going to work out!” “You are a girl, you cannot go for a career in sports, or mechanical engineering or aeronautics. Jobs like doctor, software engineer, and teacher are the ones that are meant for girls.”

Sometimes the statements sound like a ray of hope but the sad reality is that they mostly end up in betrayal. “We are not stopping you from pursuing you dreams but whatever you want to do, do it after your marriage.” “We will find you a suitable family that allows you to continue your studies even after marriage and also allow you to start a career.”

Click Here: Interesting Articles To Read When Bored

Statements like these are what hurt even more. They tend to give hope that a girl’s dream will not die, but unfortunately, it is only after she is married off that she realizes that it was all a lie, it was all a trap to get her consent in marriage. The struggle faced by boys is nothing less either. The statements and demands imposed on them are much more intimidating. “Why do you want to waste time chasing your dream that is never going to do you any good? Get into any job that you find and start earning.” “Oh my God! You want to chase your dreams; how will you make a good amount of money from that? Which family will get their girl married to a person like you?” “Go look at the neighbor’s son, his monthly earnings are twice his father’s salary.

He is soon getting married and going to settle down!” “You cannot go for a career in culinary arts, cooking, fine arts etc. because those are jobs that are meant for girls and not boys. Mechanical engineer, pilot, business analyst are the jobs that are meant for boys.” “Who will take over the family’s business if you go after your dreams. Sons are meant to carry the heir forward.”

“We raised you with all hard work, spent so much money on you and is this how you show your gratitude to us?” “I carried you for 10 months inside me and went through a lot of pain to bring you to this world! You will deny my choices?!” Sounds fascinating and relatable to read each of these statements, right? Then just imagine the kind of pain and frustration that the person hearing all this will be experiencing- be it a girl or boy. It is all the effect of the most illogical factor called stereotyping.

It is one of the root causes due to which a lot of people are not able to achieve their dreams. Sometimes this gets so intense that it ends up breaking families, where the son/daughter has left the house simply because his/her parents refused to support them in their choice of career. In rare cases, it can go to an extent where suicide attempts take place because of this. They feel that it is the end of everything and decide to end their lives for a mistake that they didn’t even do.

Yes, of course career is just a part of a person’s life and does not define the person’s entire life altogether, but many parents often forget the fact that the career choice of their children is something that is connected to their ambition, their dream, their happiness and most important of all, their individuality. We live in a world where the population is growing day by day in number.

Each minute there are thousands of births for every hundred deaths that occur around the globe. So, if your son/daughter does not want to abide by your choices there is nothing wrong. They have their lives to live too! Of course, as parents, it is our duty to guide them and show them what is right and wrong, but these are people who are growing! They’re not going to remain as innocent 10-year-old kids for the rest of their lives. They get to explore and learn more as they grow and in the due course if there are choices of their own then that should never be discouraged by parents.

Especially those kinds of parents who have their minds filled with stereotypes . As parents we claim to say that our happiness lies in the happiness of our children and when they approach us asking us to support them or at least give them a chance in the choice that they have opted for, we just deny them directly with no consideration at all! Doesn’t this sound hypocritic? Socialization is rapidly increasing in our country and even in that aspect, parents pressurize their children.

Just because the cousins of their children have opted for a better career, parents force their kids as well to do even better than them. Towards the end, they ask a very annoying question or rather a statement saying “ Log Kya Kahenge! ” “ Samaaj kya bolega? ” This sounds goddamn irritating, doesn’t it? Well, if you wish to see a change, it should begin with you. Do not be afraid to choose a different path even if you are the only one who is going to travel in it. Allow your children to choose what they want. It is their life, and they are going to live it not their parents. So, having looked at the aspect of career choices and the sad reality hidden behind it, let us now see what the effective ways are to accomplish a good career.

Essay On Choice Of Career

Analyze and do a lot of research

Choosing a career is a very crucial step in life. It is a matter of life indeed and it is something that is going to remain in your life for as long as you want. Make sure that you are completely aware of both the pros as well as the cons when making a choice in careers.

Evaluate the outcomes along with its feasibility

Evaluate the outcomes of choosing a particular career and see if they are feasible to you. Check if proceeding further would be practically possible, and also do consider asking yourself if all the time and money that you are about to invest in your choice of career are worth it.

Estimate the amount of growth that you will have from the choice you have opted for.

If there is no growth then there is no point in continuing in the career.

Take as much efforts as possible from your end.

Getting successful in a career of your choice is not a piece of cake! You’re definitely going to face a lot of challenges and hardships that are in store for you. So prepare yourself mentally as well as physically if you really want to stick to your choice and be successful through it.

Gender pay gap in U.S. hasn’t changed much in two decades

The gender gap in pay has remained relatively stable in the United States over the past 20 years or so. In 2022, women earned an average of 82% of what men earned, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time workers. These results are similar to where the pay gap stood in 2002, when women earned 80% as much as men.

A chart showing that the Gender pay gap in the U.S. has not closed in recent years, but is narrower among young workers

As has long been the case, the wage gap is smaller for workers ages 25 to 34 than for all workers 16 and older. In 2022, women ages 25 to 34 earned an average of 92 cents for every dollar earned by a man in the same age group – an 8-cent gap. By comparison, the gender pay gap among workers of all ages that year was 18 cents.

While the gender pay gap has not changed much in the last two decades, it has narrowed considerably when looking at the longer term, both among all workers ages 16 and older and among those ages 25 to 34. The estimated 18-cent gender pay gap among all workers in 2022 was down from 35 cents in 1982. And the 8-cent gap among workers ages 25 to 34 in 2022 was down from a 26-cent gap four decades earlier.

The gender pay gap measures the difference in median hourly earnings between men and women who work full or part time in the United States. Pew Research Center’s estimate of the pay gap is based on an analysis of Current Population Survey (CPS) monthly outgoing rotation group files ( IPUMS ) from January 1982 to December 2022, combined to create annual files. To understand how we calculate the gender pay gap, read our 2013 post, “How Pew Research Center measured the gender pay gap.”

The COVID-19 outbreak affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, especially in 2020 and 2021, limiting in-person data collection and affecting response rates. It is possible that some measures of economic outcomes and how they vary across demographic groups are affected by these changes in data collection.

In addition to findings about the gender wage gap, this analysis includes information from a Pew Research Center survey about the perceived reasons for the pay gap, as well as the pressures and career goals of U.S. men and women. The survey was conducted among 5,098 adults and includes a subset of questions asked only for 2,048 adults who are employed part time or full time, from Oct. 10-16, 2022. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Here are the questions used in this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology .

The  U.S. Census Bureau has also analyzed the gender pay gap, though its analysis looks only at full-time workers (as opposed to full- and part-time workers). In 2021, full-time, year-round working women earned 84% of what their male counterparts earned, on average, according to the Census Bureau’s most recent analysis.

Much of the gender pay gap has been explained by measurable factors such as educational attainment, occupational segregation and work experience. The narrowing of the gap over the long term is attributable in large part to gains women have made in each of these dimensions.

Related: The Enduring Grip of the Gender Pay Gap

Even though women have increased their presence in higher-paying jobs traditionally dominated by men, such as professional and managerial positions, women as a whole continue to be overrepresented in lower-paying occupations relative to their share of the workforce. This may contribute to gender differences in pay.

Other factors that are difficult to measure, including gender discrimination, may also contribute to the ongoing wage discrepancy.

Perceived reasons for the gender wage gap

A bar chart showing that Half of U.S. adults say women being treated differently by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap

When asked about the factors that may play a role in the gender wage gap, half of U.S. adults point to women being treated differently by employers as a major reason, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in October 2022. Smaller shares point to women making different choices about how to balance work and family (42%) and working in jobs that pay less (34%).

There are some notable differences between men and women in views of what’s behind the gender wage gap. Women are much more likely than men (61% vs. 37%) to say a major reason for the gap is that employers treat women differently. And while 45% of women say a major factor is that women make different choices about how to balance work and family, men are slightly less likely to hold that view (40% say this).

Parents with children younger than 18 in the household are more likely than those who don’t have young kids at home (48% vs. 40%) to say a major reason for the pay gap is the choices that women make about how to balance family and work. On this question, differences by parental status are evident among both men and women.

Views about reasons for the gender wage gap also differ by party. About two-thirds of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (68%) say a major factor behind wage differences is that employers treat women differently, but far fewer Republicans and Republican leaners (30%) say the same. Conversely, Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say women’s choices about how to balance family and work (50% vs. 36%) and their tendency to work in jobs that pay less (39% vs. 30%) are major reasons why women earn less than men.

Democratic and Republican women are more likely than their male counterparts in the same party to say a major reason for the gender wage gap is that employers treat women differently. About three-quarters of Democratic women (76%) say this, compared with 59% of Democratic men. And while 43% of Republican women say unequal treatment by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap, just 18% of GOP men share that view.

Pressures facing working women and men

Family caregiving responsibilities bring different pressures for working women and men, and research has shown that being a mother can reduce women’s earnings , while fatherhood can increase men’s earnings .

A chart showing that about two-thirds of U.S. working mothers feel a great deal of pressure to focus on responsibilities at home

Employed women and men are about equally likely to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially and to be successful in their jobs and careers, according to the Center’s October survey. But women, and particularly working mothers, are more likely than men to say they feel a great deal of pressure to focus on responsibilities at home.

About half of employed women (48%) report feeling a great deal of pressure to focus on their responsibilities at home, compared with 35% of employed men. Among working mothers with children younger than 18 in the household, two-thirds (67%) say the same, compared with 45% of working dads.

When it comes to supporting their family financially, similar shares of working moms and dads (57% vs. 62%) report they feel a great deal of pressure, but this is driven mainly by the large share of unmarried working mothers who say they feel a great deal of pressure in this regard (77%). Among those who are married, working dads are far more likely than working moms (60% vs. 43%) to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially. (There were not enough unmarried working fathers in the sample to analyze separately.)

About four-in-ten working parents say they feel a great deal of pressure to be successful at their job or career. These findings don’t differ by gender.

Gender differences in job roles, aspirations

A bar chart showing that women in the U.S. are more likely than men to say they're not the boss at their job - and don't want to be in the future

Overall, a quarter of employed U.S. adults say they are currently the boss or one of the top managers where they work, according to the Center’s survey. Another 33% say they are not currently the boss but would like to be in the future, while 41% are not and do not aspire to be the boss or one of the top managers.

Men are more likely than women to be a boss or a top manager where they work (28% vs. 21%). This is especially the case among employed fathers, 35% of whom say they are the boss or one of the top managers where they work. (The varying attitudes between fathers and men without children at least partly reflect differences in marital status and educational attainment between the two groups.)

In addition to being less likely than men to say they are currently the boss or a top manager at work, women are also more likely to say they wouldn’t want to be in this type of position in the future. More than four-in-ten employed women (46%) say this, compared with 37% of men. Similar shares of men (35%) and women (31%) say they are not currently the boss but would like to be one day. These patterns are similar among parents.
