These tools, designed to generate human-like text based on the prompts they receive, have become a tempting option for students looking to circumvent the traditional essay-writing process. This development poses a significant challenge for educators striving to maintain the integrity of academic assignments. But some teachers are finding their own little ways to solve this pressing problem.

Daina Petronis, an English teacher from Toronto, Canada has garnered attention for her innovative approach to identifying essays generated by AI. In a TikTok video cited by Daily Mail, the teacher has grabbed both interest and criticism. Petronis unveiled a method she refers to as a 'Trojan Horse.' This technique involves embedding a hidden instruction within the essay prompt that directs the inclusion of specific, unrelated words in the student's submission. The instruction, formatted in white text and minimised in size, remains unseen by students but is detected by AI when the prompt is copied into a tool like ChatGPT.

The process Petronis outlines: 1. Divide the essay prompt into two parts. 2. Embed a directive in one part asking for the inclusion of arbitrary words. 3. Conceal this directive by setting the font color to white and reducing its size. 4. Reassemble the prompt.

When students use ChatGPT, the AI incorporates the specified 'Trojan Horse' words into the essay, signaling to teacher that the work may not be the student's own. Petronis's method relies on the premise that AI, unlike humans, will not overlook these hidden instructions and will dutifully integrate the specified terms into its response.

This approach also sparked discussions among educators and students alike. Critics argue that it primarily targets students who use AI without reviewing the generated text, suggesting it might not catch more diligent cheaters.

Petronis emphasises that the primary goal of her 'Trojan Horse' technique is to ensure academic integrity and to provide an opportunity to guide students away from reliance on AI for educational tasks. 

Addressing the surge of chatbots and generative AI, a Harvard Graduate School of Education study provides some guidance for educators in the era of AI. The report made the following points that could help both educators and students deal with the advent of the new technology:
 1. AI is Here: AI is becoming a significant part of our world, and it’s crucial for teachers to understand it. Even though it might feel unfamiliar or intimidating, it’s a reality we need to embrace. 2. AI is a Tool: AI can serve as a beneficial tool in the classroom. It can assist teachers in understanding students better and provide students with a more personalized learning experience. 3. Teachers Need to Learn About AI: It’s essential for teachers to learn about AI so they can guide their students. Students are already using AI tools, and they need to understand how to use them responsibly. 4. Use AI With Students: Teachers should incorporate AI tools with their students. This can be done in class or assigned as homework. The objective is to help students comprehend how AI works and how to use it responsibly. 5. Teach Students to Ask Questions: One of the most vital skills students can learn is how to ask good questions. This is something that AI can’t do, so it’s a skill that will always be valuable.

High School Teachers Are Using ChatGPT-Aided Software Called Writable To Grade Papers, But Is It Unethical?

Look, I understand that teachers are overworked, underpaid, and critically underappreciated.

That said, if you can’t be bothered to grade papers , maybe you should take a sabbatical or something.

And sure, students use ChatGPT all the time, but that doesn’t make it ok for teachers to do the same, right?

Apparently there is a software called Writable that allows teachers to use AI to grade essays. And sure, it might save them time they could use to give more or better instruction, but do we really think that’s how they’re going to use it?

The company’s CEO insists their program is a good thing. “We have a lot of teachers who are using the program and are very excited about it.”

The tool works by teachers uploading essays that are then run through ChatGPT. The program offers comments and observations. Teachers are then supposed to vet that feedback before passing it along to their students.

This is called the “human in the loop” approach.

The bottom line is that students who aren’t using AI and who are putting their own thoughts and hard work into these assignments could feel shortchanged to find out that their teachers aren’t even reading them.

But if the students aren’t putting in the work, maybe the professors are right to give as much time and effort as they’re getting.

There’s also the question of whether not allowing students to use AI will prepare them for the real world in a meaningful way.

To be honest, there’s no way to look at Writable and software like it other than as a symptom of a deeper systemic issue in the US education system.

This is nothing more than a band-aid to save them some time they desperately need, but it’s not able to fix what’s actually wrong.

I’m not sure what actually could.

Christy Rehm didn’t start out to be a teacher.

Having had some great teachers in her life helped, showing her the difference teachers can make in people’s lives. 

She earned a master’s and a doctorate and taught kindergarten for a year before teaching high school English, something that she loves. “I realized that great teachers bring their positive energy and joy, amazing life experiences and knowledge and passion for their discipline, and love of people, to the classroom every day,” she said. 

She has been teaching for nearly 26 years now – currently at New Oxford High School – and has loved it. She loves passing on her love for the written word to her students, which, she admits, in this digital age, can be something of a challenge. In February, she received an email that she had been nominated to participate in a competition called America’s Favorite Teacher. She filled out the information requested and was soon notified that she had been selected. “It’s kind of like ‘The Voice’ for teachers,” she said, “but I don’t have to sing.” 

The competition, sponsored by Teach for America as a fundraiser, is based on votes from those who make small donations to a non-profit organization to promote education. (One vote is free, but you can multiply votes by donating to the organization.) 

As of Monday, Rehm was No. 1 in her group. First-round voting continues until April 4.

Virginia teacher shot by 6-year-old files $40M lawsuit after she says school ignored warnings

Almost three months after Virginia teacher Abigail Zwerner was shot by a 6-year-old student , she filed a $40 million lawsuit Monday alleging school administrators shrugged off multiple warnings from staff and students who believed the boy had a gun and posed an imminent threat on the day of the shooting, and did so knowing the child "had a history of random violence."

The Jan. 6 shooting of Zwerner at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News stunned the country as police announced the child's actions were intentional. The student shot her with a 9 mm handgun while she sat at a reading table in their first-grade classroom, according to officials.

The injured educator's complaint, filed in the Newport News Circuit Court, says Richneck Assistant Principal Ebony Parker chose to "breach her assumed duty" to protect Zwerner, "despite multiple reports that a firearm was on school property and likely in possession of a violent individual."

Parker resigned in the wake of the shooting. She could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

Also named as defendants are the Newport News School Board, former schools Superintendent George Parker III, whom the board voted to remove "without cause," and Richneck principal Briana Foster Newton, who was transferred  to a different role within the district.

Zwerner, 25, is seeking a jury trial, noting in her suit that she suffers from "physical pain and mental anguish."

Newport News police praised her for managing to escort her class of about 20 students to safety even after she was seriously wounded in her left hand and chest.

Lawyers for Zwerner said Monday on NBC's "TODAY" show that the school leadership knew of at least three separate warnings that the boy was believed to have a gun and some other students reported seeing it.

Lawyer Jeffrey Breit disagreed with the idea that Zwerner's negligence suit should be a workers' compensation claim under Virginia law since theoretically, workers can't sue their own employers.

But, he said, the shooting is "an exception" because "no 6-year-old student is going to be a risk of shooting their teacher. It's not part of their job. It's not a night 7-Eleven worker."

School knew of boy's behavioral issues

The lawsuit mentions new details about the boy, who is identified as John Doe, and an alleged pattern of troubling behavior.

While in kindergarten at Richneck in the 2021-22 school year, the boy strangled and choked a teacher and was removed from the school, according to the complaint.

That same school year, the boy also pulled up the dress of a female student who had fallen on the playground, the complaint says, and "began to touch the child inappropriately until reprimanded by a teacher."

The boy was transferred out of Richneck and placed in a different institution within the district, but was allowed to return for the 2022-23 school year when he was enrolled in Zwerner's class.

He was placed on a modified schedule last fall after "chasing students around the playground with a belt in an effort to whip them with it, as well as cursing at staff and teachers," according to the complaint. At least one parent was also required to attend school with him daily "because of his violent tendencies."

"Teachers' concerns with John Doe's behavior was regularly brought to the attention of Richneck Elementary School administration, and the concerns were always dismissed," the suit says. "Often when he was taken to the school office to address his behavior, he would return to the classroom shortly thereafter with some type of reward, such as a piece of candy."

Warnings were allegedly ignored

On Jan. 4, two days before the shooting, the boy took Zwerner's cellphone and slammed it to the ground, shattering the device, according to the complaint. The boy was given a one-day suspension for the following day.

On Jan. 6, the boy returned to Richneck, but his mother did not stay with him during the school day as required, and the complaint says the school did not assign him a "one-on-one companion."

Between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m., Zwerner went to the assistant principal and said the student appeared in a "violent mood" and had threatened to physically assault a classmate. According to the complaint, Parker "had no response," and another teacher observed that the administrator "essentially ignored Plaintiff's concerns."

Meanwhile, another teacher was informed by two students that the boy had a gun in his backpack, the suit says. The teacher later informed Parker that she believed the boy had a gun and thought she might have seen him place an object in his sweatshirt pocket during recess and also searched his backpack, but found no weapon. Parker responded that the boy's "pockets were too small to hold a handgun and did nothing," the complaint says.

Then, a third teacher told Parker after 1 p.m. that the boy showed another student the gun at recess, and that student told another teacher the boy "would hurt him if he told anyone," according to the complaint.

A fourth employee had asked Parker for permission to search the boy, but she "forbade" him, according to the suit, saying that the boy's backpack had already been searched and the boy's mother would be arriving to pick him up.

At 1:59 p.m., while Zwerner sat in her classroom at a reading table, the boy pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Potential criminal charges pending

In a statement Monday, the Newport News school board said it will "work with legal counsel accordingly" once the suit is received.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with Abby Zwerner and her ongoing recovery," the board said. "As we have shared, as a school community, we continue to recover and support one another. We have been working in partnership with our community to address safety and security, student behavior and family engagement."

Since the shooting, the district has implemented metal detectors and installed a full-time security guard at Richneck.

"The safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is our most important priority," the board said, adding that officials "will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure a safe and secure teaching and learning environment across all our schools."

George Parker III, the former schools superintendent, declined to comment about the lawsuit.

A lawyer for Newton, the former Richneck principal, could not immediately be reached for comment. Her lawyer previously said, "The fact of the matter is those who were aware the student had a gun on the premises that day did not report it to Ms. Newton."

Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney Howard Gwynn told NBC News last month that he would not seek charges against the boy, citing his age and inability to adequately understand the legal system, but said he was still weighing whether he might hold any adults criminally liable.

The family of the boy said in a statement in January that the weapon was "secured" in the home and that they have "always been committed to responsible gun ownership and keeping firearms out of the reach of children."

The family also said the boy has an acute disability and was receiving the "treatment he needs" under a court-ordered temporary detention at a medical facility.

The family's lawyer, James Ellenson, said Monday that the allegations in the complaint involving the 6-year-old "should be taken with a large grain of salt."

"We of course continue to pray for Ms. Zwerner's complete recovery," he said, declining to comment further since potential criminal charges are still pending.

The incident at Richneck — a rare example of a shooting perpetrated by a child under 10 at a U.S. school — came after two other shootings in Newport News schools in the past 18 months.

Overall, the number of school shootings reached its highest number in two decades during the 2020-21 school year,  according to a federal report last June . A week ago, a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, saw six people, including a substitute teacher and three young children, killed by a 28-year-old former student armed with two AR-style weapons and a handgun.

Diane Toscano, another lawyer representing Zwerner, said Monday that it is "outrageous" that a first-grade teacher such as her client should have to assume that being shot is part of the job.

"Her future is uncertain," Toscano said. "She loved being a teacher, loved teaching children, but the emotional trauma she sustained is just unbelievable."

Zwerner, during an interview on "TODAY" two weeks ago, said she is still in pain and has had to undergo multiple surgeries and grueling physical therapy. The bullet and bullet fragments are still lodged in her chest, she added.

While she declined to speak in detail about a motive for the attack, the memory of that moment remains etched in her mind.

"I just will never forget the look on his face that he gave me while he pointed the gun directly at me," Zwerner said.

The injury to her left hand still makes the most simple tasks, such as making a fist, opening a water bottle and getting dressed, extremely difficult, and she said that doctors are still uncertain about whether the function in the hand will be fully restored.

"I'm not sure when the shock will ever go away because of just how surreal it was and, you know, the vivid memories that I have of that day," Zwerner said. "I think about it daily. Sometimes I have nightmares."
