Global Citizen has joined forces with the Pandemic Action Network (PAN) and other committed civil society organizations to call on world leaders to ensure a comprehensive, inclusive, and impactful response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent efforts by world leaders to devise, fund, and implement solutions are welcomed — notably the May 4 pledging conference hosted by the European Commission, which saw billions of dollars pledged for a holistic COVID-19 response — but this is only the start of what will be required to see an end to this pandemic. In order to ensure our global response is successful, all stakeholders must be engaged as part of the solution.

The Open Letter to World Leaders calls for a comprehensive plan of action to be fully funded by new commitments and based on equity; increased transparency and accountability of new governance structures put in place to implement the plan, including the new Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) accelerator ; and to ensure that commitments to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 remain intact.

Our voices are stronger when we unite. We invite civil society partners to join our collective call by signing this letter, and Global Citizens can join the movement by  taking action here  to support the  Global Goal: Unite for Our Future  campaign.

world leader letter assignment

Dear leaders,

Accelerating the end to COVID-19 and preventing further pandemics demands a bold, inclusive, and comprehensive global action plan. With tremendous uncertainty around when this pandemic will end, we have to tackle these challenges — emergency response and long-term prevention — together.

The May 4 pledging conference led by European Commission was a critical display of global solidarity and political commitment to tackle this global challenge, echoed by many at the World Health Assembly last week. Yet the money raised is only the down payment of what is required to end this pandemic and prevent the next one.

Beyond the pledges made thus far towards research and development into diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines to stop the spread of COVID-19, the international community must also prioritize investments that will ensure universal and equitable access to these innovations, and ensure that, in particular, the world’s poorest countries can continue delivery of essential health services to the most vulnerable populations during the pandemic, and build stronger, more resilient, and better-prepared health systems for the future.

This is not only the right thing to do for humankind, but also, an outbreak anywhere can quickly become a pandemic everywhere — as COVID-19 has so clearly demonstrated.

Therefore, we urge you to build on the successful pledging effort begun on May 4 and go much bolder — to ensure the world has the resources and efficient, inclusive mechanisms necessary to rid the world of COVID-19, deliver equitable access to innovations, and prevent future pandemics. Specifically, we are calling on all leaders to:

1. Achieve international agreement on a strategic, fully costed plan to end this pandemic and prevent the next one

Establish a transparent and credible process to identify and fully cost the needs to end COVID-19 and help prevent future pandemics, particularly in the poorest countries, building on existing international assessments of preparedness gaps.

Set out clear principles — based on global equity — and a timeline for delivering the necessary funding for this comprehensive plan through future global pledging moments. All pledges should be additional to previous commitments and the modalities and timeline of disbursements should be made public.

2. Establish transparent and inclusive governance structures for the new Access to COVID Tools (ACT) Accelerator

Establish an ACT Board with diverse global representation beyond health organizations and the founding groups, to include civil society, health care workers, patients and communities, supply chain experts, business, and other experts.

Allocate and disburse funds committed for the ACT against a clear strategic plan to end this crisis and prevent future pandemics, prioritizing those in LMICs and vulnerable groups.

Clear principles must be established on the use of funds and private sector engagement, patents, and reporting.

3. Retain commitments to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

Even as global leaders mobilize to invest in a bold and accelerated COVID-19 global response, they need to continue to support overseas development aid to mitigate the effect of the pandemic on the poorest nations and to build better and more resilient interlocking systems that lead people out of extreme poverty.

We stand ready to work with decision-makers in global institutions and governments to make sure we end this crisis and prevent future pandemics with global, sustainable, and inclusive solutions, on the basis of the above principles of equity, transparency, and accountability. It is time for leaders to act, breaking the cycle of panic and neglect around pandemic preparedness, and do whatever it takes to rid the world of COVID-19 and make sure this situation cannot happen again.

Related to your fictional letter assignment to a world leader for...

Related to your fictional letter assignment to a world leader for this week, share the following:

  • What anthropological insights do you think would be most useful to world leaders, when considering policies related to current environmental challenges?
  • What are some insights from anthropology that you think might be useful to world leaders considering policies for potential future environmental challenges?

Palmer, C.T. (2020). Culture and sustainability:  Environmental anthropology in the

anthropocene. In N. Brown, T. McIlwraith, & L. Tubelle de Gonzalez (Eds.), Perspectives: An open introduction to cultural anthropology (2nd ed., pp. 357-381). American Anthropological Association.

Answer & Explanation

A. Understanding the cultural ramifications of any policy decisions, realizing how different cultures may interact with natural resources differently and how that could affect sustainability, and taking into account how the environment should be managed in the context of cultural beliefs and values are some of the anthropological insights that would be most helpful to world leaders when considering policies related to current environmental challenges.

Moreover, anthropological study can offer important insights into how various civilizations adapt to changing surroundings as well as how various communities use, access, and manage resources.

B. Understanding the long-term effects of environmental change on various societies, being aware of the cultural ramifications of policy choices, and looking into the potential for various societies to adapt to new environmental realities are some anthropological insights that might be helpful to world leaders considering policies for potential future environmental challenges. Anthropologists can also shed light on the possibilities for environmental stewardship among various societies and how various cultures see environmental sustainability.

Moreover, anthropological studies can assist pinpoint possible hot spots for conflict between various societies and the ways in which such conflicts might affect environmental management.

Introduction

Recent years have seen an increase in the importance of environmental issues. World leaders must act to address these challenges since global temperatures are rising, natural resources are being depleted, and ecosystems are being devastated. In this situation, anthropological views can be a great source of advice for formulating environmental policy. This essay will analyze the anthropological lessons that global decision-makers would find most helpful as they formulate policies to address the present and foreseeable environmental concerns.

Anthropological Perspectives on Today's Environmental Issues

World leaders can gain from anthropological ideas while formulating policies to address contemporary environmental concerns. Anthropological study can offer useful insights into the cultural effects of policy choices, enabling decision-makers to understand how various cultures may engage with natural resources differently and how that might affect sustainability. Moreover, anthropological study can offer important insights into how various civilizations adapt to changing surroundings as well as how various communities use, access, and manage resources. For instance, Palmer (2020) discovered that despite the obstacles faced by deforestation and climate change, indigenous people in the Amazon basin have evolved techniques to manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. This study serves as an example of how anthropological research can shed light on the relationships between various societies and their environments and the possibilities for resource management that is both sustainable and ethical.

Environmental Problems in the Future: Anthropological Perspectives

World leaders might profit from anthropological insights when formulating policy for probable future environmental concerns. The long-term effects of environmental change on various civilizations can be better understood through anthropological research, which enables policymakers to understand the cultural ramifications of their choices. Anthropologists can also shed light on the possibilities for environmental stewardship among various societies and how various cultures see environmental sustainability. In some indigenous groups in the Amazon basin, for instance, environmental protection was considered as a collective obligation, with different community members sharing responsibility for various environmental duties, according to a research by Palmer (2020). This study serves as an example of how anthropological research can shed light on cultural behaviors and ideas surrounding environmental stewardship.

In conclusion, when evaluating measures to address present and upcoming environmental concerns, international leaders can benefit greatly from anthropological views. Understanding the cultural effects of policy decisions, how various societies use and manage resources, how various societies adapt to changing environments, and how various cultures approach environmental sustainability and stewardship may all be learned via anthropological research. World leaders may manage present and future environmental concerns more effectively by taking into account the cultural implications of policy choices and understanding how various cultures interact with their environments.

Best Practices for Writing a Global Assignment Letter Of Understanding

By Laura Wilkins, CRP, GMS

Those who have relocated globally can attest to the life-changing nature of an overseas assignment—often requiring that the employee sell a home in addition to moving their family to a new country and changing many of their typical routines. Your employee letter of understanding must cover a number of important topics sensitively but clearly—without increasing already high stress levels.

A letter of understanding outlines the details and benefits of an international assignment. This legally binding document, which all parties must sign, serves as an addendum to the employee’s regular employment contract and lays out any differing terms that apply. In addition to the assignment start and end date, job title, and location, the letter of assignment must specify all contractual agreements, a code of conduct, compensation, assignment-specific benefits such as moving expenses, and any repatriation allowance or tax equalization provided.

The letter of understanding should specify all pertinent details without leaving any room for interpretation. Lack of clarity can lead to misunderstandings and costly mistakes which drain resources and distract the employee, impacting the success of the assignment.

The key to drafting effective letters of understanding begins with knowing your employees and focusing on their needs and their families’ needs. You may find sample templates online to help you draft a letter of understanding, but unfortunately, many of them begin like this:

Dear Mr. Jones,

This letter is to inform you that you will be transferred effective [date] to our location in…

Considering the upheaval a relocation will cause in your employee’s life, this approach may come across as overly abrupt. Here are some best practices to help you write an effective letter of understanding.

Discuss the Global Relocation or Assignment First

Smiling businesswoman meets with a male colleague.

Having a detailed discussion provides an opportunity to create enthusiasm about a new role by:

  • Providing a platform to discuss your global mobility policy and company-provided financial assistance
  • Clarifying the specific skill-building and learning opportunities available in the new role
  • Showing that the company values the employee and wants to make an investment in his or her future
  • Demonstrating that the employee is important to the growth of the business

Holding a preliminary discussion shows respect for the employee and allows you to craft a letter tailored to that individual. In turn, this will likely increase loyalty and productivity and reduce the chance of a declined relocation offer.

Outline the New Role

Your employee’s job title and responsibilities may remain the same in the new location. If so, make sure the letter of understanding includes the name of the person to whom the employee will report and the duration of the transfer or assignment. For employees taking on new responsibilities, you’ll also want to include the following:

  • The employee’s new job title or position
  • A description of any increased benefits, salary or bonuses

Similar in some ways to an employment offer letter, this portion of the letter of understanding focuses on the specifics of the new role. It documents the job title, salary, and related benefits to eliminate misunderstandings. The appropriate manager should sign and date the letter, and it should include the:

  • Employee’s full name and current home address.
  • Department names — both the current department and the new destination department.
  • Effective date the employee should report to the new location.
  • Anticipated end date in the case of an assignment.
  • Name of the employee’s new manager.
  • Expiration date for the individual’s relocation and assignment benefits.

After you provide this information, you can delve into the specifics of your company’s global mobility policy and explain the benefits the employee will receive. If you’re looking for additional resources on transfer notices, check out our page on 12 Employee Transfer Letter Tips.

Leaders obsessed with race. Pregnant 21-year-old's shooting death was about her behavior.

Ta’kiya young's death the result of her actions.

Two things have nothing to do with the Aug. 24, 2023, Blendon Twp. shooting of 21-year-old Ta’Kiya Young: The suspect’s race and pregnancy.

Young was accused of stealing liquor from Kroger.

She got into a car, which did not have license plates and was illegally parked in a handicap spot.

A Kroger employee alerted police, who were required to approach Young and detain her. Officers repeatedly asked Young to get out of the car. The law requires Young to comply, but she refused to do so over a dozen times.

More: Supreme Court orders Blendon Twp. to give justices records in fatal Ta'Kiya Young shooting

Released video showed police officers doing their job. It shows Young refusing to comply with officers, then knowingly and purposefully driving forward, hitting another police officer, lifting him off the ground. Clearly, Young would have run the officer down.

Our community would be much better served by leaders who based their decisions more on a person’s behavior than their race.

Violent and/or non-compliant behavior, directed at police officers, will almost always end badly for the person involved. Our leaders should become less concerned with a person’s color and more concerned with their behavior.

I am responding to the April 14 letter to the editor "Thinking People Must Vote" by Jeanette Ballantyne of Akron.

Believe me I am thinking and asking the following questions:

Are our borders secure? No. Millions of illegal immigrants have entered. Millions.

I want to protect the unborn . Do you?

Donald Trump a juggernaut of chaos. Will thinking people stand up?

I want our police to protect our cities which means there will be law and order. There are no consequences for those who break the law. I am voting for good versus evil.

What about inflation?  Food prices have increased as well as our gas prices at the pump.

How about the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms?

Ask yourself are you better off now than four years ago? If you are thinking, the answer is simple and clear. If you are thinking, how could you/would you vote for a declining president who needs help to get off the stage or who needs three-by-five cards to help him remember or answer questions?

Are you watching CNN or MSNBC?

This land of ours was founded on Godly principles by religious men who were thinking by the people, for the people; not big government, lying and power-hungry Democrats.

Last but not least, I am not only thinking, I am praying for a country that stands up for the rights of the people.Trump voters are thinking and voting in November.

Require solar panels

News reports suggest yet more agricultural land in Ohio is being bought up for conversion into solar panel farms.

It is unbelievable that no one seems to have figured that distribution centers built almost exclusively on farmland have flat roofs that are ideal for arrays of solar panels.

Existing distribution centers and those in the planning stage should be required to install solar panels on their flat roofs, thus saving valuable farmland.

David Elliot, Columbus

What do you think? How to submit a letter to the editor for The Columbus Dispatch

Downtown rooftops and parking lots should go green

Downtown Columbus needs to be green. Columbus should lead the way for our country and our world by turning our city into a much more sustainable and natural place.

You may ask how we should do that.

The answer is by taking advantage of the unused space in our city.

One way is through turning empty rooftops into rooftops with trees, plant and flowers. This will make our city much greener and more beautiful. It also will reduce our carbon imprint because the plants can suck in the carbon dioxide.

Another way is through repurposing empty parking lots.

You may not think that there are many unused parking lots in the city, but I once watched a video that said that over half of America’s parking lots are unused or mostly vacant. When you think about it most parking lots are only used for a couple of hours a day or sometimes only once a year.

An example is the parking lot between Mapfre Stadium and the Ohio State Fair. This place that is only used for a very short part of the year could have hundreds of solar panels that would only be needed to move for a couple of weeks and then could be replaced. This could produce enough energy to power thousands of homes in the city.

We can't be silent in face of World War 3

As an Ahmadi Muslim living in Columbus, my faith teaches me to speak truthfully and courageously before my leaders, especially those who are hardhearted, unjust and cruel.

This is in fact the greatest form of ‘Jihad’ as stated by the Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

The world was silent when Israel attacked the Iranian embassy in Syria. The world is silent only because Israel was the perpetrator; however, we now see, this is causing the war to spread further.

The world was also silent when tens of thousands of Palestinians were killed. Voices have only started being raised when aid workers were killed.

Unfortunately, we are witnessing World War 3 unfold and expecting soft measures and silence to solve for the lack of justice.

However, to remain silent does not mean there is peace.

His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has repeatedly stated for the last decade-plus that to have peace we must have justice at every level of society. While Iran's retaliation on Israel is justified, Israel's attack on Iran was foolish.

Israel pulling Iran into this war will only pull in more nations. As distressing as this will be for the entire world, I encourage my neighbors to keep praying for justice and helping each other out as we must prepare for difficult days ahead.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Dallas pastor who took over leadership of the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s longtime civil rights organization resigned Tuesday just months after he took the job.

The Rev. Frederick Haynes III told The Associated Press that he submitted a letter with his resignation as head of the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition, effective immediately.

“After a time of prayer and consultation, I felt it was best to step down as president and CEO of Rainbow PUSH,” he said by phone from Texas. “I am forever honored that the Rev. Jackson graciously considered me worthy of following him as president of the organization that he founded.”

Haynes, 63, said he felt it was “necessary” to move on in light of “challenges that continue to exist,” but declined to elaborate further. His resignation letter, written on Rainbow PUSH letterhead, also did not go into details about his decision.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, Jackson said the organization accepted Haynes’ resignation and they would remain “partners in the fight for peace, civil rights and economic justice.”

Jackson said his son, Yusef Jackson, an attorney, would continue to serve as the organization’s chief operating officer. He did not mention the prospects of choosing another president and CEO.

“We will carry on the vital work of protecting, defending, and gaining civil rights by leveling the economic and educational playing fields,” Jesse Jackson said. “Our commitment to promoting peace and justice around the world remains unwavering.”

The civil rights leader announced in July that he would step down from the organization he founded more than 50 years ago, and he introduced Haynes as his successor.

Haynes, the pastor at Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, was formally installed as president and CEO in a February ceremony in that city. He planned to lead Rainbow PUSH, which advocates for social justice and political activism, from Texas. He has been senior pastor since 1983 at Friendship-West, which has about 13,000 members, according to the church.

Haynes said that even though the formal takeover was in February, he hit the ground running over the summer with duties in the office and hoped he could collaborate with Rainbow PUSH and Jackson in the future.

“He remains one of my heroes. He remains one of the great leaders of all time,” Haynes said.

In his resignation letter, he said he plans to continue his work “in the fight for liberation and freedom.”

Jackson — who was pivotal in the modern Civil Rights Movement — has faced numerous health issues in recent years and has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease .

Still, the 82-year-old two-time presidential candidate hasn’t shied away from the public eye.

Jackson appeared at a packed Chicago City Council meeting in January to support a controversial resolution for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war .

Haiti in Crisis Sets Up Ruling Council, Clearing Way for an Acting Leader

A governing council was finalized after a month of negotiations. It is tasked with restoring law and order by appointing an acting prime minister.

People walking down a dirt street covered with rubble.

By David C. Adams and Andre Paultre

David C. Adams reported from Miami, and Andre Paultre from Port-au-Prince.

A new transitional ruling council was finalized in Haiti on Friday to try to bring political stability to a country wracked by escalating gang violence and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The council’s formation, announced in an official state-run bulletin, comes after gangs who have a brutal grip on much of the capital prevented the prime minister, Ariel Henry, from returning to the country after a trip overseas and ultimately pushed him to announce his resignation.

The presidential transition council is tasked with restoring law and order through the appointment of an acting prime minister to head a new government as well as to pave the way for the election of a new president.

A coalition of armed gangs has had control of most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, since it launched an offensive in late February, destroying police stations and government offices, looting banks and hospitals and killing and kidnapping hundreds of people.

The establishment of the council was hashed out in Jamaica last month by a regional Caribbean Community bloc, CARICOM, along with the United States, France and Canada after it became clear that Mr. Henry would no longer be able to govern Haiti.

But the selection of the body’s members was delayed after several names were withdrawn out of safety fears or because ethical issues had become a concern.

Mr. Henry left Haiti for Kenya in early March to finalize an agreement for a 2,500-member multinational force, led by the East African nation, to deploy and take on the gangs.

The council includes members of Haiti’s main political parties and coalitions as well as representatives of the private sector, civil society, the Haitian diaspora and religious leaders. The council’s mandate says a new president is expected to take office in February 2026, but does not specify when elections would be held.

As a condition for joining the body, all the members agreed to back deployment of the Kenya-led mission. Anyone under indictment, facing sanctions by the United Nations or intending to run in the next election was excluded from the council.

One gang leader, Jimmy Chérizier, known as Barbecue, had threatened to attack anyone who signed on to the new government, describing the transition as an illegitimate concoction of Haiti’s corrupt political system.

“Cut off their heads and burn down their houses,” he told his gang members, using a 19th-century war cry for Haitian independence.

While the installation of the council is widely considered to be a positive step, many challenges remain, experts say.

“Will it have the capacity to silence the guns of the armed men?” asked Robert Fatton, a Haitian-born political scientist at the University of Virginia. “How can it be installed safely, and how can it start governing in an environment of widespread insecurity?”

Some Haitians have questioned the council’s constitutional legitimacy, and protesters tried to prevent the official announcement from being printed on Thursday at the offices of Le Moniteur, the official state bulletin.

The council must first be sworn in at the National Palace in downtown Port-au-Prince, the scene of some of the heaviest clashes between gang members and the Haitian police.

The multinational security force meant to take on the gangs still lacks funding, despite a pledge of $300 million by the Biden administration. So far Congress has approved only $10 million of that commitment. After the transition announcement, President Biden moved quickly to announce the disbursement of $60 million in funding for the multinational force and for the Haitian police, consisting of equipment and training.

“We are at a tipping point, and we need a solution now,” U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat from Florida and the only Haitian American in Congress, said on the floor of the House this week. “Haitians cannot wait any longer for the multinational security mission.”

The Biden administration pushed hard for the installation of the transition council, which comes days after the arrival of a new U.S. ambassador, Dennis Hankins, an experienced diplomat who served previously in Haiti.

“I recognize that these are difficult times for the Haitian people,” he said in a statement. “Haitians deserve to be represented by elected officials who are accountable to the people.”

The United Nations’ human rights office reported this month that more than 1,500 people had been killed in Haiti so far this year, the result of what it described as a “cataclysmic situation” in the country.

Corruption, impunity and poor governance, together with increasing levels of gang violence, have brought the Caribbean nation’s state institutions “close to collapse,” the agency said.

Local humanitarian agencies have also reported a shortage of food and fuel after the capital’s main port was shut down. Several countries, including the United States, Canada and France, have evacuated hundreds of stranded citizens on emergency flights and by helicopter.

The World Food Program said that Haiti was suffering its worst levels of food insecurity on record after gangs took over farmlands and blocked the roads in and out of the capital, extorting buses and trucks delivering goods.

On Thursday, the program, which is a U.N. agency, warned that its stocks in Haiti could run out by the end of the month.

“We can only hope the transition council is ready to deliver,” said Reginald Delva, a Haitian security consultant and former Haitian government minister. “The population can no longer wait.”

“We are facing the worst humanitarian and sanitarian crisis," he added. “A new cabinet is a priority to get the ball rolling. Political leaders need to put their differences aside, make the population a priority.”
