You can easily capture the right audience by creatively using YouTube video ads . While they’re the perfect tool to get your message to your audience (and get a buy-in), YouTube ads can often come across as complex to understand and master.

That’s why, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide, to show you exactly how to advertise on YouTube and get started with your first ad campaign.

Bonus: We’re also including some best practices to ensure your first campaign itself is a hit! And if you’re hitting a creative block, fret not, we’ve got you covered with some YouTube video ad ideas , along with ready-to-use templates by InVideo .

Let’s go, shall we?

Here’s what we will cover in this guide:

(1) Do YouTube ads actually work? (2) How YouTube ads work (3) YouTube advertising options and ad formats (4) How to advertise on YouTube (5) YouTube advertising guidelines (6) YouTube ads best practices (7) Tips for optimising your Google Ads for video ads (8) 7 YouTube video ads ideas

(1) Do YouTube ads actually work?

Even before we dive into the topic of how to advertise on YouTube and whether or not YouTube ads work, let’s first answer the question (for the sake of absolute beginners) – what are YouTube ads?

Well, to put simply, YouTube ads are a great way of reaching potential customers and of nudging them to take action. Whether you want them to sign up, purchase a product or service, subscribe to your channel – basically, whatever you may want to achieve by reaching out to a potential customer/viewer – you can achieve it using YouTube ads.

If you’re wondering how to run YouTube ads, you should know YouTube advertising is done through Google Ads (formerly known as Google AdWords), and once you qualify for and join the YouTube Partner Program, you can start advertising on YouTube. Now, do they actually work?

If used well, these ads do fetch you the desired results. For example, a regular commercial may not work well as a YouTube TrueView ad. Why? Because you would definitely want to create something more engaging for your audience, since these types of ads are skippable and regular commercials may be too done to death for this format. You can make your ads work with great storytelling and content that’s relatable. You may also use case studies of people that your audience can empathize with, to get your audience’s buy-in.

Similarly, a Bumper ad may be a great format for a short brand awareness video since it can be leveraged to send a memorable message to a large audience within a span as short as 6 seconds.

(2) How YouTube ads work

Picture this: You’re an aspiring baker watching a YouTube video tutorial on baking a classic vanilla cake by a celebrity chef. You realise that you don’t have certain ingredients or kitchen tools. Just then, an ad by a seller plays, featuring a range of baking tools and ingredients. Perfect timing, isn’t it? You click on the ad, make your purchase and come back to the video knowing you are now equipped to make this recipe that you’ll learn from the video. This was possible because of YouTube ads.

There are three parties to a YouTube ad: creators who build an audience (in the above example, the celebrity chef), advertisers who buy ads to reach this audience (the baking supplies seller), and viewers who watch videos and engage with ads (you, the aspiring baker).

Infographics on How YouTube ads work

It’s a win for everyone since the audience gets directly connected with a relevant brand or content, while the advertiser reaches their target audience better, and content creators get an opportunity to earn money by allowing ads to be placed in their videos.

And here’s the good news – YouTube lets you target your ad to users that are already interested in what you have to offer. By relying on viewers’ Google search history, YouTube makes it easy for you to reach your target audience and ensure a higher chance that a person who views your ad, will actually click on it.

(3) YouTube advertising options and ad formats

Now to understand how to advertise on YouTube we need to understand the different YouTube ad formats. You can choose from three main types of ads, to promote your business on YouTube. Which one you choose, completely depends on what you want to achieve out of your ads.

(a) What is a YouTube TrueView ad?

As the name suggests, TrueView ads give viewers the power of choice – they can choose to view or skip but will never be forced to watch. This YouTube ad format is the standard way to advertise on the platform, and probably the most affordable too. As per Google, 8 out of 10 viewers prefer TrueView ads to other in-stream video ad formats. They may play before someone watches a video, and the viewer may get the option to skip the ad after it plays for about 5 seconds. Marketers can customise their video ads with different Calls to Action (CTAs) in overlay text.

Here’s an example of what In-stream Skippable video ads, a type of TrueView ad, looks like:

Eg of In-stream Skippable video ads-type of TrueView ad

Advertisers pay for these ads only when users watch at least 30 seconds, or an entire short video, or interact with the ad in some way. Users can skip the ads they’re not interested in and continue to watch the ones that interest them. This makes TrueView ads worth the monetary investment for businesses, as well as ensure that they reach a more interested audience.

There are two types of TrueView ads – Instream Skippable video ads and TrueView discovery ads.

(i) What are In-stream Skippable video ads?

These are the most common type of TrueView ads. Advertisers love them since they allow flexibility in creating promotional videos of varying lengths.

TrueView In-stream ads - Desktop & mobile view

- Resolution: 640 × 360 (16:9 aspect ratio) or 480 × 360 (4:3 aspect ratio) - Minimum video length: 12 seconds - Maximum video length: 3 minutes - Additional assets:

- Companion banner ad of 300x60 px (PNG, JPG, GIF) and 150 KB - CTA overlay (created within Google Ads) - 15-character headline - 10-character CTA button

- Placement: Usually pre-roll (before a video begins to play)

Sometimes they can also appear mid or post-roll

(ii) What are TrueView discovery ads?

As the name suggests, discovery ads help your brand get discovered on YouTube. Initially called in-display ads, these types of YouTube ads show up on the YouTube homepage, or on the search results page, and also as a related video (on the listing on the right, on desktop and below, on mobile) while you watch a video on YouTube. You would have noticed these with an ‘AD’ tag on them.

- Resolution: 640 × 360 (16:9 aspect ratio) or 480 × 360 (4:3 aspect ratio) - Maximum video length: The ad links to an existing video, so the length has no impact - Additional assets:

- Video Thumbnail (choose from existing 4 that auto-generate) - 25-character headline - 35-character description 1 - 35-character description 2

- Placement: On search results page and as a related video on the video viewing page

(b) What are Pre-roll In-Stream (non-skippable) ads?

These non-skippable ads play before, mid-roll, or after the main video. Since these types of YouTube ads are interruptive in nature, they can get annoying, but if used correctly, can offer a refreshing break in an otherwise long video and may even inspire a viewer to become loyal to your brand. Since the viewer is forced to sit through the video, make sure that your video ad really offers some value to your viewer.

Take this Geico pre-roll ad for example that reminds the reader that they cannot skip the ad, and in the process, engages with the audience:

- Resolution: 640 × 360 (16:9 aspect ratio) or 480 × 360 (4:3 aspect ratio) - Minimum video length: 7 seconds - Maximum video length: 15 seconds (recommended) - Additional assets:

- Placement: Usually pre-roll (before a video begins to play). Sometimes they can also appear mid or post-roll.

These types of YouTube ads are ideal for brand awareness campaigns where one wants to ensure that viewers consume the ad message right until the end. However, you would really want to put thought into these type of video ads since YouTube sells space for Pre-roll In-stream ads on a pay-per-click basis.

pre roll ads - pro tips

(c) What are Bumper ads?

These are the shortest type of YouTube video ads – as short as 6 seconds! These ads always play before a video that is chosen by a viewer, begins to play, and are usually suited for brand or product awareness or consideration campaigns. They can also complement larger video campaigns. Since you only have 6 seconds, make sure to use them wisely and only include the components of your brand that you want the audience to remember.

- Resolution: 640 × 360 (16:9 aspect ratio) or 480 × 360 (4:3 aspect ratio) - Maximum video length: 6 seconds (recommended) - Additional assets:

- Placement: Pre-roll (before a video begins to play)

You might think it’s tricky to tell a compelling story in just 6 seconds, but do not let the format intimidate you. Instead, why not go through some examples to get your creative juices flowing? (4) How to advertise on YouTube

Now that we’ve understood the different types of YouTube ads, let’s go ahead and understand exactly how to advertise on YouTube. Running YouTube ads can be done in broadly two steps – creating and uploading a video ad on YouTube and setting up an ad campaign on Google Ads. Once done, it’s advisable to determine your metrics and measure your ad’s performance.

Step 1: Create a video ad

Depending on what your goal is, choose a video format and create an ad best suited for that format. We already dove deep into formats, and we’ll cover how to create YouTube ads that are effective in the best section of this article.

Step 2: Set up an ad campaign

Putting thought into setting up your YouTube video ad campaign is as important as creating the ad itself. If you create the right content for an audience but do not set the right budgets, correctly target it, all your content creation efforts could go in vain.

Once you create an account on https://ads.google.com , firstly, link your YouTube channel to the Ads account (Go to Tools> Set up >Linked accounts, or refer to the GIF below).

Prework: These are the items you want to checklist before you purchase your ad.

- Define your goals . Make sure your goals are clearly defined. These could be anything from building brand awareness or increasing loyalty, to influencing buyers’ decisions or even getting more sales. - Define your metrics - Set up your bid strategy and budget . Google Ads offers unmatched ROI since the average business owner earns up to $2 in revenue for every $1 spent on the platform. It still makes sense to set low budgets initially and work your way up as you start to gain confidence. - Set up campaign targeting and organise your ads with ad groups

Now that you’re all set with your checklist, let’s go ahead and understand how to make a YouTube ad campaign in just a few simple steps:

Step 1 – Select a campaign objective and ad format

Select ‘New Campaign’ by clicking the ‘+’ icon under Campaigns and get started. Name your campaign in line with your video or campaign title.

Setting up a YouTube ad new campaign

This is also where you will need to determine your campaign goal. Are you intending to generate more leads or more website traffic? Are you looking to increase sales? Or, is your ad one that is intended for brand awareness and reach? Once you’ve made your selection, click on ‘Video’ as a format, and proceed to choosing your ad campaign format – we covered this in section 3 .

Setting up a youtube ad campaign goal

Step 2 – Set your budget and bid strategy

As earlier mentioned, it always makes sense to start with a low budget initially and then work your way up. With bids too, while it’s well known that ‘higher the price, higher are the impressions’, your bids do not necessarily have to be high.

Setting up a youtube ad budget and bid strategy

While budgeting is easy to understand, here’s how bids work – businesses create bids within Google’s advertising system targeting specific keywords (which can be further refined), and the highest bidder for the keyword/metric combination gets to display their ad when a user searched for those keywords. Maximum CPV (most expensive) and Targeting CPV are good bidding strategies for those starting out.

Pro tips on YouTube ad campaign

Step 3 – Customise your campaign

This step is crucial since it’ll determine where your ad will be placed, how often, and on what type of content. At this point, you’ll see a page with three options:

1) Network: Here you’ll be able to check or uncheck (when not relevant) options where your ad can be displayed. Check YouTube Search Results only for discovery ads. YouTube Videos is a great option to check since it justifies monies with exposure; it’s the best option and most YouTubers choose it. Check Video Partners on Display Network only if you want to run your ad on sites of partners outside of YouTube. However, its low price also indicates lower exposure.

2) Inventory Type: Here you can choose which type of videos you want your ad to run on (or before or after). If you’re a fashion brand, it helps to place your ad on videos of fashion bloggers and influencers, as well as stylists. While most marketers recommend Standard Inventory, if you’re picky about brand image and want your ad to be placed on closest matching content, go in for Limited Inventory option.

Comparison on Inventory Types

3) Excluded Content: At this point, do exclude any mature or sensitive content that could potentially hurt your brand. However, while excluding certain type of content would help your brand, it’s important to note that with each filter selected the cost of your ad goes up and the reach lowers.

Excluded content for YouTube ad campaign

Step 4 – Choose your target audience

You’ve already affected your costs and reach by toggling with excluded content. For your first round of ads, it’s recommended to choose your audience carefully (as for always) but to also not get too specific as this may not deliver expected results. Creating a buyer persona will definitely help you select which targeting options will be most beneficial to your campaign.

Step 5 – Add keywords and topics, and placements

You obviously don’t want your ads to show to everyone, but only to interested users – since you will be paying per view or engagement. This is why choosing the right keywords is essential. Your selected keywords will further determine which videos your ads will show on, as these will be matched against the video’s keywords derived out of title, tag and description. Same goes for topics – so if you’re a food brand, your ads will be most relevant to show up on cooking videos. With placements, you further narrow your reach for better conversion – you can even specifically choose a video to place your ad on.

Step 6 – Set a bid amount for your campaign

While we suggested bidding low, if you did set your bidding strategy to Maximum CPV, do not bid too low or your ad may not run. You can calculate your maximum CPV before placing your bid by dividing the total cost by views.

Pro tip on maximum CPV - YouTube ad campaign tip

Step 7 – Select the YouTube ad video

At this point, we hope that you know your video ad already needs to be uploaded on YouTube. You can leave it unlisted, of course, if you do not intend to have your ads featuring on your official YouTube page. You can search by typing keywords or title or simply paste the destination video URL in the search bar.

Step 3: Measure your ad results

Simply publishing your ad isn’t enough. It’s equally important to set up a monitoring system, to understand your ad’s performance. This can be done from YouTube Creator Studio, Google Analytics, or Google Ads.

measure youtube video ad results pro tips

In Google Ads, clicking on Video Campaigns from under All Campaigns opens a summary of the video campaign’s performance, or you can access metrics from the reporting tab. Certain Key Performance Metrics are important to keep in mind when analysing results to see how your video is doing. Here’s a breakdown of these based on three types of goals –

1) Awareness KPIs are views, impressions, unique users

2) Consideration KPIs are view-through rate, watch time

3) Action KPIs are clicks, calls, sign-ups, sales

Here’s a ready reckoner of what some of the most common performance metrics stand for:

A. Core Performance

- Impressions: No. of times your ad was shown to a potential customer; good metric for brand awareness - Views: No. of times people watched your ad/engaged with it - View-through rate: Total ad views/no. of people who watched your ad; great way to check if right audience is reached - Avg. cost per view (CPV): Avg. amount paid when viewer watches 30 seconds of longer ads or entire shorter ads.

B. Click Performance

- Clicks: Number of times people clicked on the ad i.e. how appealing the ad is to the audience - Click-through rate (CTR): The number of clicks on the ad by number of times the ad is shown

C. Engagement Performance

- Engagement: Number of clicks on interactive elements such as teasers/icons to expand cards on the video - Engagement rate: Number of engagements on ad by number of times it’s shown, given as a percentage

D. Reach & Frequency

- Unique cookies: Number of cookies (storing preferences etc., just like on web pages) specific to an individual browser on people's computers - Unique viewers by cookies: Number of times the video ad was viewed by a unique cookie over a given time - Avg. impression frequency per cookie: Average times the video ad is shown to a unique cookie over a given period of time - Avg. view frequency per cookie: Average times a unique cookie viewed your video over a given period of time - It’s advised to wait 5-10 days for data to populate, before you start to analyse results. In case you do not see enough traction, consider increasing your bids.

(5) YouTube advertising guidelines

Now that you have a fair idea of how to advertise on YouTube, let’s go over some important guidelines to ensure your ads run smoothly. All ads on YouTube must comply with their Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. These apply to all the ad types as mentioned in this article.

As far as what’s recommended and what isn’t allowed in your ad, here’s a snapshot. First, let’s look at the specs guidelines:

✓ You video must be uploaded to YouTube

✓ Video must allow embedding

✓ It must be unlisted (not viewable outside of the ad) or public

✓ It must be in one of the supported YouTube file formats – .MOV, .MPEG4, .MP4, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEG-PS, .FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm, HEVC (h265)

This is a list of what’s not allowed in YouTube video ads, and reasons for which your video ad may get disapproved:

✖ Non-skippable in-stream ads longer than 15 seconds

✖ Tracking pixels if

- They’re not SSL-compliant (including subsequent calls) - They’re on events other than impression, view, and skip - They’re more than 3 per event - They’re using Javascript for data collection (third-party click redirect/click commands are allowed)

✖ Incompatible video format (while more video formats are allowed on YouTube, MP4 is highly recommended)

✖ Copyrighted content not owned by you or where you do not have authorised legal rights to advertise with it

✖ Sexually explicit content

✖ Shocking content – gruesome imagery, obscene language etc.

✖ Third-party ad serving

Google has also created separate policies for each of the above, for the sake of clarity on exceptions. Click here to access their list of their ad policies. You may also want to go through advertiser-friendly content guidelines, here .

(6) YouTube ads best practices

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to running YouTube ads that are wildly successful. But, there are certain tried and tested methods that promise better results.  And with 55% marketers using it and making it the most used video platform for video marketing , it’s better to follow these tried and tested methods than to shoot in the dark.

(a) Stick to the 15-60 second range

Studies show that a 30-second ad cut had the highest view-through rate – a metric that directly tells you about a video’s performance. That said, while this is the recommended length, the ad’s engagement will largely depend on its message and how it’s conveyed.

(b) Hook the audience within the first 7 seconds

We’ll lean on research again for this one; that’s the time you get to captivate the audience.

YouTube ads best practices

(c) Familiarise your audience

Show your brand in action , especially if your ad is going to be shown to people who know nothing about your brand. After viewing the ad, your audience must know who you are, what you do, and how they could benefit from using your product or service.

(d) Guide your audience

You do not want to leave your audience thinking, “hmm…nice ad” and then move on. You’re certainly investing in an ad for conversions, so guide them with a CTA to go make a purchase, or subscribe to your mailing list, or sign up to a course you’re offering.

(e) Use remarketing (or retargeting) techniques

If they did not click on your ad the first time, who can tell with certainty that they will a second time around? Why not show them another ad with follow-up messaging? Maybe that will nudge them to click on your ad.

(f) Continuous optimisation

Keep refining your keywords , bids, targeting, and the ad itself. If you learn that a particular TrueView ad would bring better results as a Bumper ad, there’s no reason for you to not create another parallel campaign (or a new one altogether!) with the video edited into a Bumper ad. The idea is to keep increasing performance to get better results.

(7) Tips for optimising your Google Ads for video ads

Google enables advertisers to display their ads on Google's search engine results page. Managing your YouTube video ads from Google Ads allows you to control where they will appear, when they’ll run, and who gets to see them.

Good thing is that Google Ads leverages previous marketing efforts, meaning that you can tap into an audience that is already interested in your product, service or brand. All you have to do is ensure you optimise Google Ads, which is a pay-per-click platform, after all, to get the most out of your money:

Tip #1 - Create better content

There’s absolutely no denying that no matter your promotional efforts if your content isn’t compelling, your ads are going to go waste. So first and foremost, as a brand, it’ll only help you to create beautifully scripted ads. In fact, your ad need not even be made on a high budget; if the storytelling is strong or your script is highly engaging and relatable, your ad could merely be a few presentation slides and still perform better than some of the most elaborately shot videos out there on YouTube.

Tip #2 - Sharpen your targeting

Be very clear about what you want to achieve from your ad and target it to a very specific audience, to ensure it reaches only the relevant people – those who will engage with and act on your ad. While Geography, Language, and Demographics are easy factors to choose from, make sure that you accurately target people based on Topics (what they’re presently watching) and Interests (the kind of content they tend to watch).

Tips for optimising your Google Ads for video ads

Tip #3 - Sharpen your metrics

Especially in the post-pandemic world, with tighter budgets, it makes sense to get rid of vanity metrics and stick to those that you can influence – like the click-through rate (CTR) and the conversion rate (CVR).

(8) 7 YouTube video ad ideas to help you get started

Now that you’re all set with information about how to advertise on YouTube, why not look at a few video ads to get some inspiration?

Idea #1 - Inspire with a narrative

Take cue from this Nike ad. All you’ve got to do is use some footage, a background score, and spin an inspiring narrative to connect with your audience. This ad is quite impactful also since it ties back to the larger context of the pandemic and inspires with a shared sentiment – the power of resilience.

  Create a similar ad

Idea #2 - Sell with case studies

Mindvalley is a great example here. They create short trailers that feature their speakers as case studies for viewers to get inspired and to get them to ‘watch the full video’ and even to subscribe to this self-development educational platform.

Idea #3 - Solve a problem

Grammarly does this well. We’ve definitely seen crisply crafted ads by Grammarly that compel us to ‘get Grammarly’ and strengthen our writing skills. They use text overlay and pop-up screens to showcase their product better.

Idea #4 - Say it with animations

This video by Aviro uses interesting animation to nudge people to install their mobile app.

Why not create an infographic ad yourself

Idea #5 - Sell using data

This ad by T-Mobile is a great example of using numbers to persuade the audience to switch away from their competitor.

Tell your brand story using numbers

Idea #6 - Brand in action

Showcase your product or service, so your viewers get a clear picture of what your brand is all about. Skullcandy does it beautifully with its product walkthrough.

Create your own brand in action ad

Idea #7 - Offers, anyone?

Entice your audience to make a purchase; let the discount, promotional offer, or sale announcement be the star in your video ad.

Google owns YouTube. However, advertising on YouTube is very different from running a pay-per-click (PPC) or paid social media campaign . There are specific creative constraints and many options for this platform.

So you need to have basic knowledge of what works before you scope out your next video project and make the most of the paid possibilities.

In recent years, Google has rolled out a series of changes that make YouTube advertising a worthwhile investment. Here’s some of what Google did:

More Rigorous Brand Safety Efforts

Since 2020, YouTube has announced major updates to protect viewers and advertisers from harmful content. The latest update in March 2023 is about using “inappropriate language.”

For instance, if you use the f-word in the first seven seconds or in most of your video, you may earn limited ad revenue rather than no ad revenue.

Targeting Based on Users’ Search History

A few years ago, Google announced it would allow advertisers to reach more viewers on YouTube — especially across mobile devices, where 70% of YouTube views take place.

Among the changes it rolled out, possibly the biggest announcement was that advertisers could target viewers based on their Google search history, besides their viewing behaviors, which YouTube was already targeting.

Marketers can now target ads at people recently searching for a product or service. If viewers see a video ad whose content relates to what they’ve been researching, they might be likelier to watch the entire ad or click through it to the website.

Audio has grown lately — you needn’t look further than podcasts and the recent social media app Clubhouse . To keep up with the changes, Google now allows YouTube advertisers to create audio-only ads.

While we’d recommend starting with a video ad first, you can later consider using audio once you’ve perfected your brand voice and learned what your audience likes to engage with the most.

Upgraded Data Attribution Models

Google has also upgraded YouTube’s data attribution model so you can better measure how users engage with your ads.

You can also determine cost-per-conversion and see your YouTube ads’ performance alongside your Search and Shopping ads’ attribution reports.

YouTube Advertising Cost

The cost of YouTube ads is determined by factors like your target audience, industry, ad watch time, campaign objective, and target keywords. Averagely, the YouTube advertising cost per ad view or action is between $0.10 to $0.30. You can spend as little or as much as you want. If you set a daily budget, Google will only charge you up until that amount, making YouTube ads a safe investment.

How YouTube Ad Pricing Works

YouTube uses two ad pricing models:

  • Cost-per-click (CPC).
  • Cost-per-view (CPV).

Both ad pricing models mean the advertising cost of YouTube ads depends on a user's action — meaning, if you choose the cost-per-click pricing model, you’ll pay when anyone clicks your ad.

Choosing the cost-per-view model means you pay when users interact with your ad or view your ad for 30 seconds (or the ad duration if it's shorter than 30 seconds).

YouTube lets you use the CPC or CPV pricing model depending on your ad goal and campaign subtype .

For example, if generating brand awareness is your YouTube ad goal, you’ll use CPV. If getting website traffic is your YouTube ad goal, you’ll use CPC.

What Dictates the Cost of Advertising on YouTube?

There are a few factors that dictate how much your YouTube ads will cost. They include:

  • Bidding strategy.
  • Targeting options.

Let’s explore each of these.

Note: If it’s your first time advertising on YouTube, you can invest at least $10 for your daily ad campaign. After assessing the campaign's performance, you can increase the budget.

When setting up YouTube ads, you need to specify the amount you’re willing to pay for either a click or a view.

YouTube ads bidding: Shows example of a target CPM bid set at $100

  • Target CPA (cost-per-action). Use Target CPA if your campaign’s goal is to drive sales, leads, and even website traffic. This bidding strategy lets Google optimize your ads for conversions based on the average amount you want to pay.
  • Maximize conversions. This works like the Target CPA, except that you give the reins to Google and let it automatically set bids that get you the most conversions within your budget.

Racking your brain about the bidding strategy to use is unnecessary. As you set up your YouTube ad, Google will automatically pick the bidding strategies that match your goals.

Targeting Options

YouTube ad targeting options have undergone updates that’ll help you get better returns on your ad spend.

Within each ad group, you can define your target audience and state where your ads should display. Let’s go over the different targeting options:

Demographics

This broad targeting option lets you reach your audience based on their gender, age, and household income.

However, it can also offer the lowest returns and engagement. Why? Your ad contains the same message that may not resonate with people of different genders, ages, and incomes.

What Non-Skippable Videos Can Include

Non-skippable ads give you as much freedom as skippable ads in their allotted content. You can include people, dialogue, audio, and more elements that best represent your brand in 15 to 20 seconds.

Because people can’t skip non-skippable ads, these videos are best created with a CTA so you can optimize the attention you have from the viewer. In other words, encourage viewers to click on your ad and receive something in return.

Perhaps you've released a new product or are promoting a major event this season — use non-skippable ads to get those clicks.

4. Bumper Ads

Bumper ads are the shortest type of YouTube video ads. At just six seconds per bumper, these ad spots play before a viewer's chosen video. It’s also non-skippable.

Example of a YouTube bumper ad

Step 11: Configure advanced settings.

In the advanced options, you can specify the operating system, device, and carrier for more granular targeting.

This is especially useful for mobile app ads, and there's an option to increase or decrease your bid based on the ad showing to someone using a mobile device.

You can set beginning and ending dates for your campaign, create a custom schedule for YouTube to show your video ad, and limit the daily impressions and views for users. This all helps you to get the most return for your ad spend.

Step 12: Set up demographics and audience segments.

Next, define the audience you would like the video to be shown to — options include gender, age, parental status, and household income. You can also target individuals by their interests, such as beauty mavens, cooking enthusiasts, horror movie fans, etc.

Try running multiple campaigns to target different groups of users to discover who is most engaged, rather than including everyone you want to target in one campaign.

Prompt for a user to set up demographics and audience segments

Step 15: Create the video ad assets.

Insert the YouTube link for the video you would like to run the ad for. You will then choose whether you want this to run as an in-stream ad or an in-display ad.

For in-display, you'll need to include a title and short description, which is entered on two separate lines. Note: Titles are limited to 25 characters, and the description lines are limited to 35 characters each.

In-stream ads provide you with the option to overlap a display URL on top of the video. You should use a vanity URL that directs to another final URL to make it more memorable.

You can include advanced URL tracking options. In addition, a companion banner made from images from your video will appear on the right side of the video ad.

A beginners’ guide to YouTube video ads: Drive action with video advertising

Getting started with advertising on YouTube is simple with Google Ads. From creating engaging assets to supercharging your marketing performance, here’s what you need to know.

The power of YouTube video advertising with Google Ads

Gone are the days when advertisers needed big-budget productions and ample time to manage and measure campaigns. Integrating video advertising into your marketing mix has never been more straightforward or effective.

Google Ads provides easy access to YouTube, the world’s most popular digital video platform, and with it a thriving marketplace of potential customers. You can create and manage video ads, target specific audiences, and track results, all from your Google Ads account.

Whether your goal is brand awareness or driving sales, Google Ads has a wealth of tools, AI-powered solutions, and ad formats to ensure your video campaigns reach the right audience at the right time — and drive the results that matter to your business.

Why use YouTube for advertising?

Holiday ideas, car reviews, make-up tips, home makeovers… it’s all on YouTube. More than two billion people across the globe use the platform to find and watch the content they love, share videos, and shape culture.

By advertising on YouTube with Google Ads, you can reach valuable audiences and engage with a community of passionate people who are looking for what you have to offer.

And, as YouTube ads use Google data, it helps you reach shoppers with relevant messaging who are most likely to convert as a result.

Creating effective video ads

Anyone can create a successful video ad for YouTube. In the Asset Library of your Google Ads account, you’ll find free video creation tools and resources to help build quick and effective video ads.

Simply upload your assets, such as product shots and a logo, choose from a range of templates, and start creating your first YouTube campaign.

You can also upload your own finished video ad. This offers the most creative freedom, but it requires a bit of know-how. From how to shoot ads on your phone to crafting powerful calls to action, check out YouTube’s ABCD guide to effective video ads for tips and best practices.

Selecting the right YouTube ad format for your business goals

There’s a wide variety of YouTube ad formats that you access and manage through your Google Ads account. Each carries different benefits to suit any marketing strategy, connecting with potential customers at different parts of the marketing funnel.

Here’s how some of the key YouTube formats can help your business:

  • Masthead ads: Take over the YouTube Home feed with your ad to reach a massive audience and drive brand awareness.
  • In-feed ads: Build brand consideration by showing your ads when viewers browse related videos, scroll through the YouTube Home feed in the app, or search for content.
  • Bumper ads: Make a big impact with a short, non-skippable ad that’s only 6 seconds long — perfect for increasing brand awareness and getting customers’ attention.
  • Skippable in-stream ads: Reach a targeted audience with your ad that plays before, during, or after a YouTube video. Viewers can skip after 5 seconds, so it’s important that your ad is engaging.
  • Non-skippable in-stream ads: Get your message across with a longer ad that viewers can’t skip — ideal for building brand awareness or explaining your product or service in detail.
  • TrueView ads: Pay only when someone watches your ad for at least 30 seconds or interacts with it. TrueView ads can be used to achieve a variety of goals, including driving traffic to your website, generating leads, and boosting sales.

Marketers looking for an easy-to-manage but effective presence on YouTube should also consider using Performance Max. This AI-powered campaign type enables advertisers to access all of Google from a single campaign, including YouTube.

Setting up your YouTube ads for success

Now you know how easy it is to create video ads and the wide variety of ad formats available, you’re ready to get going with your first YouTube campaign.

Within your Google Ads account, you can set up and manage key campaign elements, including:

Setting your goals:

When creating a new video campaign, you’ll be presented with a list of goals, such as leads, website traffic, or local store visits. Simply select what would make the campaign successful for your business, and Google AI will optimize ad placement, budgets, and performance accordingly.

Targeting your audience:

You can use Google’s targeting options to show your ads to people who are most likely to be interested in your products or services. You can target shoppers based on their demographics, search history, and interests, such as fashion or cooking.

You can also connect with individuals by selecting keywords and phrases that describe your product or services and match the terms people use to search for content on YouTube.

Additionally, you can re-engage people who have interacted with your business in the past, such as users who have already visited your website or interacted with your YouTube channel.

Choosing your budget:

As with all Google Ad campaigns, budgeting is flexible and simple to manage. Google Ads allows you to set your budget for YouTube video campaigns on a daily or monthly basis. You can also set a maximum cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) bid. This gives you flexibility in how you control your spending.

Measuring your success:

There are a number of ways to measure the success of your ads on YouTube. You can track how many people saw your ads, how many people clicked on your ads, and how many people took the desired action (such as visiting your website or making a purchase). Which metrics are most important to you will depend on your specific business goals for the campaign.

With YouTube campaigns, just as with other Google Ads solutions, you can start small. Consider testing different audiences and various ad types, and begin with a modest budget. Once you see how your campaigns are performing and what works for you, you can start scaling up your activity and unlock the full potential of YouTube for your business.

Everyone watches YouTube. Over 75% of Americans age 15 and up are on YouTube, part of over 2 billion monthly active users, making it the most popular website in the world after Google.

The potential of a huge audience is a great reason to market your business on YouTube. But shouting from the rooftops about your products without a plan won’t get you anywhere.

You need a strategy to succeed and that’s exactly what you’ll find here: the 10 steps to crush YouTube marketing in 2024.

What is YouTube marketing?

YouTube marketing is the practice of promoting a brand, product, or service on YouTube. It can involve a mix of tactics, including (but not limited to):

  • Creating organic promotional videos
  • Working with influencers
  • Advertising on the platform

To market your business on YouTube — whether you’re an entrepreneur or an enterprise corporation — you need to produce what your target customers want. Sounds simple, right? It is, as long as you know what your customers really want and it’s not just what you think they want, which is a trap far too many businesses fall into.

Plus, you need to make sure the right people find your videos. YouTube is a search engine so you’ll need to optimize your content for the YouTube algorithm , just like you do for Google SEO.

Without further ado, here is your complete, step-by-step checklist for how to successfully promote your business on YouTube.

Your 10-step YouTube marketing strategy

Step 1: create a youtube channel for your business.

First things first, you have to set up a YouTube channel.

Since YouTube is part of Google, you’ll need to create a Google account first to sign up for a YouTube channel. You can use an existing account or create one especially for managing your business.

Here’s how to get up and running:

  • Create a Google account.
  • Use that to create your YouTube account .
  • Log in to YouTube and create a Brand Account and channel.

account settings on YouTube

Managing your YouTube channel with a Brand Account is a best practice, as opposed to running it with your personal Google account. For one thing, a Brand Account lets multiple people in your company manage and update your YouTube channel.

For another, no one at work needs to know your personal email is [email protected] . (Your secret’s safe with me.)

More importantly, it also allows you to expand your business later with additional YouTube channels.

Next up, pick a name for your channel. Why not try out our free YouTube username generator to get some AI-powered inspiration?

OK, you’ve got the account. Next up: pretty it up.

  • “About” information.
  • Channel art (the “header” image and profile picture).
  • Social media and website links.

Check out our step-by-step walkthrough to create a YouTube account for more details.

Now we’re ready to tackle your YouTube video marketing strategy.

Step 2: Learn about your audience

Alright, now for the tough stuff. What does your audience really want?

To figure this out, you need to answer two questions:

  • Who are you making videos for?
  • What are they already watching on YouTube?

To start, it’s helpful to know some basic YouTube demographics . YouTube has over 2 billion users and 72% of American internet users regularly browse YouTube. 77% of people aged 15-35 use YouTube and unlike other social platforms, there isn’t a large dropoff in that rate for older users.

Statista YouTube demographics by age and reach

YouTube isn’t only popular in the USA. There are over 100 localized versions of YouTube for countries around the world.

Spend some time researching who your target audience is already following on YouTube. What types of videos do they watch? (If you don’t have your target audience figured out yet, we have a free buyer persona template to help out.)

There are a couple ways to do this:

If you already have your YouTube channel set up, check out your Analytics tab .

This will give you valuable insights into your audience’s demographics and interests. You can see how many people are finding your videos through search, seeing it in their suggested feed or from other sources.

Analytics tag on YouTube including traffic source

Use social listening to find your audience.

What’s the best way to form lasting connections with other people? By spying on them from a distance, of course.

No, seriously, social listening allows you to continuously search social platforms, including YouTube, for mentions of your brand or specific keywords.

By seeing what people are saying about you or your industry, you can find out what people want to know and use that for video content ideas.

Step 3: Research your competition

The fastest way to grow on YouTube is to figure out what’s working for your competition and then do that… but better.

You can start by looking up channels from the competitors you already know. Perform a competitor analysis for the following:

  • Subscriber count
  • Average views per video
  • Frequency of posting
  • Overall video quality
  • What people are saying in the comments
  • The main topics they post about

And then ask yourself:

  • What are their most popular videos?
  • How are they presenting themselves?
  • What is their brand voice?
  • How can I differentiate my company from them?
  • What ideas can I get for new content from this channel?

Put all your notes into a SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for S trengths, W eaknesses, O pportunities and T hreats (and always makes me feel like a Secret Service agent when I casually mention I’m gonna go do a SWOT to my coworkers by the coffee machine).

We’ve got a free SWOT template to get you goin’ right away.

social media competitive analysis template

At first, your goal is probably to grow your subscribers and audience as fast as possible. So write down your competitors’ subscriber counts and views. Track your own progress against theirs monthly.

Plus, if you’re competitive like me, the desire to crush their numbers will motivate you to keep going with your channel, even if growth is slow at first.

Step 4: Learn from your favorite channels

Besides learning from your competitors, you should also be learning from your favorite YouTube channels. These don’t have to be channels related to your industry.

By consuming YouTube content, you will learn a lot about what’s working, especially since it’s always changing.

For example, did you know it’s more important to have good audio quality than video quality? It’s true: Bad audio can turn people off from watching your video or subscribing.

A lot goes into making YouTube videos people want to watch. When you watch others, pay attention to things like:

  • Video thumbnails
  • Channel art
  • How other creators are linking to posts or products
  • How other creators edit their videos, including text popups and other special effects

There are even entire channels devoted to video editing and YouTube growth. You can track them, or keywords relating to YouTube growth, in your Hootsuite dashboard.

Step 5: Optimize your videos to get views

OK, let’s get specific about making you famous.

YouTube’s 2 billion users watch about 1 billion hours of video content every single day. So how do you rise above the noise and get YouTube’s algorithm to show your videos?

If you’re familiar with SEO and Google’s algorithm, YouTube works in a similar way with 1 key difference: Personalization.

When you search a phrase on Google, you’re served roughly the same website results as other people. I say “roughly,” because some results change based on location.

But if you and a buddy sat next to each other in the same room, on the same Wi-Fi and searched for the same keyword, you’d see the same results.

Not the case on YouTube.

When YouTube shows you search results, they take into account the keyword and similar things Google looks for: How popular a video already is, keywords in the title, etc. But YouTube also factors in your watch history and the types of videos it knows you like to watch.

That’s why no two users’ YouTube homepage or search results will be 100% alike.

Personalization plays a role, but it’s still important to do all those other YouTube SEO things to get your videos found in search.

Here are the 6 ways you need to optimize your videos to get more views :

Do keyword research

Before you can optimize your video, you need to know what you’re optimizing for. Keyword research gives you the phrases people are using to find content so you can add it to yours, too. (More on this in a sec.)

You can use Google Keyword Planner for keyword research . Additionally, type your topic into the YouTube search bar and see what comes up. These are all things real people have searched for. This can give you ideas for new keywords.

YouTube growth keyword search

Add your keywords to your video

You should have one main keyword and a few additional ones for each video. Here’s where to add them:

  • The video title (main keyword)
  • Use the main keyword within the first 3 sentences
  • According to YouTube, this has minimal impact, but use your keywords as tags anyway. It only takes a second.

Use timestamps

YouTube timestamps are like breaking your video into chapters. It allows viewers to skip around to the sections they’re most interested in. This increases the chance they’ll watch more of your video.

Take a look at how the Hootsuite team uses timestamps to help their audience navigate longer videos.

How to Use Hootsuite in 13 Minutes YouTube video with timestamps

Create a detailed video description

Each video’s description should have a unique section of a few sentences describing what it’s about. But, you can create default descriptions to save time for the parts you want in every video.

Here’s what you want to include in your description:

  • Website link
  • Links to your other social media accounts
  • Links to your products or services mentioned in the video
  • A call to action

Create an engaging video thumbnail

Custom thumbnails are so important for views. Besides your title, it’s the only other thing users have to decide if they want to watch your video or not.

What counts as a good YouTube thumbnail will vary depending on your audience. As a minimum, make sure it isn’t just a screenshot from your video. Use a photo or your brand elements and add some text to lure viewers in — like Hootsuite does on the Hootsuite Labs channel :

Hootsuite labs thumbnails

Current specs are a 16:9 format with a minimum size of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Respond to comments

YouTube is a social network, right? So act like it. Responding to viewer comments shows you’re there to build a community, not to push out self-promotional content.

It also boosts your video’s status to the algorithm because more comments = more popular-seeming video.

Step 6: Upload and schedule your videos

This is it, you’re ready to go.

You can upload your finished video directly into YouTube Studio and either publish it right away or schedule it for later. You can also schedule videos with Hootsuite the same way you schedule all your other social content.

For scheduling, a few things to keep in mind:

  • How often are you going to post? Pick a schedule — daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc — and stick to it.
  • Think about the best day to post on for your audience. When are they most likely to watch your content?

Step 7: Optimize your channel to attract followers

We’ve talked about optimizing individual videos but you also need to optimize your entire channel. Make sure your channel art and profile photo reflect your branding.

Hootsuite channel art visual branding

In addition to visual branding, YouTube has some built-in features that make it easier to get more subscribers :

  • Group your videos into playlists organized by topic.
  • Create a channel trailer, which is like a commercial representing what your channel is about.

You know when you’re watching a video and the creator always tells people to “like and subscribe?” There’s a reason: It works.

In your videos, be sure to:

  • Ask people to subscribe to your channel and like, comment and/or share your video.
  • Have a clear call to action.
  • For example, mention how audience questions inspired the current video.
  • Use a custom end screen to direct viewers to other videos of yours to keep them on your channel longer.
  • Uploading your own captions will ensure accuracy and is something you can easily outsource.
  • YouTube also offers free, automatic captioning but it often gets words wrong.
  • You can even add translated versions of your captions to better serve a multilingual audience or earn more international views.

Step 8: Try YouTube advertising

Not growing fast enough? Try YouTube ads .

Most YouTube ads are videos but you can also place banner ads, either in videos or on the website. You can also make your video ads either skippable after 5 seconds, or unskippable.

monday.com banner ads

As a Google company, YouTube ads operate through the Google Ads platform. Running successful ads requires a strategy of its own, which we detail in our guide to Google Ads .

Besides the campaign strategy, before you try out paid ads, make sure you have:

  • A rock-solid understanding of who your audience is.
  • Optimized your YouTube channel’s visual branding and description.
  • Uploaded at least 5-10 videos so your new visitors can get a sense for what you’re all about.

Step 9: Try influencer marketing

YouTube influencers — called “creators” — are growing every year. YouTube reported a 50% year over year growth in the number of creators earning over $10,000 per year, and a 40% increase in those earning over $100,000.

While new social platforms pop up all the time and become the “hot” place to advertise, like TikTok in 2021, YouTube is a high-performing channel for brands. Almost half of all brands who plan to use influencer marketing will use YouTube.

graph of social media platforms that US marketers plan to use for influencer marketing

YouTube is a classic sponsorship channel for a reason: 70% of viewers have bought a product they saw featured on YouTube.

As with any form of paid advertising or marketing campaign, you can’t jump straight into an influencer partnership without some prep work:

  • Know your audience, know your goals … you know this part already.
  • Play by the rules  — and not just YouTube’s rules. Follow FTC rules for disclosing paid or sponsored content. Ensure your creator partner uses the hashtags #ad or #sponsored, as a minimum.
  • Choose an influencer who aligns with your brand and who you trust to produce high-quality content.
  • Analyze your results after the campaign and learn what to do differently next time.

Nike’s campaign with “What’s Inside?” shows what’s possible when you let your creator take the lead. Famous for cutting everyday items in half to see what’s inside, the aptly-named channel created a series of videos for Nike to promote a new shoe.

The most popular video of the series is where they cut the new shoe in half, which earned over 7.1 million views.

Step 10: Analyze and adapt

As with all marketing, you need to track your YouTube analytics at least monthly. Use YouTube’s built-in reports to see what your audience is watching, what they like the most, where your traffic is coming from and more.

Use analytics to track your channel growth, too. Write down your numbers monthly for:

  • Subscribers
  • View duration
  • Impressions
  • Your click-through rate (CTR)

channel analytics overview

This becomes your benchmark to measure your channel by each month. Not growing? Then it’s time to adjust your YouTube marketing strategy.

YouTube Marketing 101: Ideas, Optimization, Ads, and More

Mar 8, 2019

Are you making YouTube videos for your business? If not, you should be. Not only is YouTube the world’s second largest search engine after Google, but consumers are also growing to expect businesses and brands to have a YouTube presence.

youtube-marketing-101-guide

#1: Have a clear idea of who your target audience is

First things first, you should have a clear idea of who you are trying to reach — both with your channel as a whole and with each individual video.

#2: Have a clearly defined value proposition

"What value to do you propose to deliver to your audience through your channel?" Tim asks. You need to very quickly address your audience and pitch the value behind watching your video if you want people to stick around.

#3: Have a very enticing thumbnail

On YouTube, an enticing thumbnail is very important when it comes to getting people to watch your video, as this is the first thing they see. Even if you don’t have a lot of design resources at your disposal, it’s important to select the most visually appealing thumbnail image you can, in order to capture attention.

#4: Have very enticing titles

An enticing title is just as important as a thumbnail when it comes to getting people to click through and watch. Make sure your title includes the benefit the viewer will get from watching your video.

#5: Pay attention to the first 15 seconds of your video

If the value doesn’t come across until several minutes in, you’ll lose your viewer. You need to show value within the first 15 seconds.

#6: Present valuable content after the first 15 seconds

And value shouldn’t be reserved for just the first 15 seconds. You need to present value all the way through your videos. How long should your videos be? Tim says, "Take as long as you need to deliver the value that you want to deliver and not a second longer."

#7: Wrap up your videos with a strong call to action

Tim asks, "What action do you want the viewer to take as a result of watching your video?" Don’t end the video without letting them know. He recommends not adding more than two calls to action.

#8: Write a good description for your video

When writing your description, keep your keywords in mind, but include them in a conversational manner. Tim suggests writing a paragraph or so.

#9: Choose your tags wisely

Tim suggests imagining you’re telling a friend about what your video is about. What 1-word and 2-word phrases would you use? These should be your tags and he suggests using around 8 to 15 of them.

The essential guide to YouTube ad campaigns

Written by by Jacqueline Zote

With 78.8% of marketers considering YouTube as the most effective platform for video marketing, there’s no doubt that it should be a part of your advertising strategy. But because it’s a video platform, creating ads for YouTube isn’t like creating ads for other social platforms. And it does get a bit intimidating when you’re just getting started.

In this post, we provide you with an in-depth look at YouTube ad campaigns so you can learn how to create one of your own. Let’s dive in.

Benefits of YouTube advertising

Why create YouTube ad campaigns in the first place? What makes them so critical for marketers and how can they benefit your business? Here’s a quick look at the top reasons why you should start advertising on YouTube:

1. Expand your reach

With YouTube having 2 billion unique users every month, it’s the perfect platform to reach a massive audience. Among these billions of users, there’s a good chance that some of them will show some interest in your offering after seeing your ad.

2. Use advanced targeting to reach the right people

YouTube allows you to create targeted ad campaigns based on category, keyword and topic. This significantly improves your chances of reaching people whose interests align with your industry, instead of just relying on demographic-based targeting.

3. Run cost-effective ads

Just because you’re displaying your ad to someone doesn’t mean you’re paying for that ad to appear if they instantly skip it as soon as they have the chance. Certain YouTube ad types such as TrueView ads have a cost advantage in that you only pay when someone engages with your ad or views it for a certain duration. More on TrueView ads later in this article.

4. Visually engage your target audience

Visuals allow you to instantly capture your audience’s attention, increasing your chances of engaging them. And running a video ad on YouTube gives you the opportunity to visually engage your target audience. In fact, videos are among the top-performing types of visual content along with infographics and presentations.

videos are on of the top-performing visual content formats

5. Get in-depth ad analytics

YouTube comes with advanced analytics that helps you understand how your ads are performing. Get insights into how long someone watches your ad, when they disengage and which ad formats see the best performance. These insights will help you perfect your YouTube ad campaigns for optimal performance.

Different types of YouTube ads

Before you start running a YouTube ad campaign, it’s crucial you understand the different types of ads you can run. This will help you choose the one that’s best for your brand based on your unique goals. Although you can run display ads and sponsored card ads as well, let’s focus on the different types of YouTube video ads.

1. Bumper ads

Bumper ads are non-skippable ads that play right before a viewer’s chosen video. They run for just six seconds, making them the shortest type of YouTube ads. This is obviously not enough time to really get your message across, which makes bumper ads ideal for larger advertising campaigns alongside other ad formats.

2. Non-skippable in-stream ads

As the name suggests, these are non-skippable ads that play before, during or after the chosen video. They typically run for 15 to 20 seconds , giving you more freedom to get your message across. Here’s an example of a non-skippable in-stream ad from Honey.

3. TrueView ads

TrueView ads are the most popular types of YouTube video ads, mainly because advertisers only pay when viewers engage with the ad. There are two types of TrueView ads — TrueView in-stream ads and TrueView video discovery.

In-stream ads play before or during a viewer’s chosen video and will give them an option to skip the ad after five seconds. You only pay if someone watches at least 30 seconds of the ad. As for video discovery ads, viewers will see your video ad alongside other YouTube videos. And you only pay if someone clicks on the video to watch it.

How to run a YouTube ad campaign

Now that you understand the basics, let’s find out how to run a YouTube ad campaign for the first time.

Step 1. Upload your advertising video on YouTube

You’ll have the option to upload your advertising video while creating your campaign. But it’s best if you already have it uploaded to save time and quickly go through the campaign creation process. For this, click on the video camera icon on the right corner of the screen and choose “Upload video.”

video upload button on youtube

Then select the file you want to upload and fill out the essential info such as title, description and tags.

Step 2. Create a new Google Ads campaign

Next, go to your Google Ads account and start creating a new campaign. The initial step requires that you select a goal for your campaign, though you also have the option to create one without a goal’s guidance as well.

You can shoot for product and brand consideration, app promotion, or brand awareness and reach. Choose the goal that fits your needs best, but for this example, we’ll create a campaign without using a goal’s guidance.

From the list of campaign types, select “Video” and click on “Continue.”

google and youtube ad campaign types with video selected

This will then give you the option to select your campaign subtype. It’s best if you choose “Custom video campaign” so you can better customize it to your needs.

Step 3. Customize your campaign

The next step is to customize your campaign by giving it a name, setting your budget, choosing your networks and more. Start by naming your campaign under “Campaign name” then select your bidding strategy.

Then set a budget for your campaign. How much are you willing to spend on this? If you’re just starting out, you might want to experiment with a small budget and see how that goes. After that, select the time period for your campaign.

You also have the option to choose which networks you want your ad to appear in. When creating a video ad, you’ll have three options: YouTube search results, YouTube videos, and video partners on the Display Network. And you can choose more than one option.

YouTube search results, as the name suggests, will appear next to search results on the platform. If you choose this option, you can only run TrueView discovery ads.

When you select YouTube videos, your ads can appear not just on YouTube videos but also on the YouTube homepage and relevant channel pages. This will allow you to use both in-stream and video discovery ads.

If you select the video partner option, YouTube will also display your ads across the other advertising avenues on Google.

After this, you’ll also have the option to customize other aspects of your campaign such as location, language and inventory type. Select the options that fit your campaign needs best.

Step 4. Choose your target audience

This next step is crucial because it will determine the effectiveness of your YouTube ad campaign and the return on your ad spend. Select the demographic you want to target and the audiences you want to display your ad to. Here, you’ll also have the option to create a custom audience so make sure you test that option if you don’t already have a custom audience in place.

Step 5. Choose your target keywords and topics

Another crucial step is choosing the keywords and topics related to your product, industry or ad. This will allow you to determine what types of content you want your ad to show up on. Even if you run out of keyword ideas, you can always enter a related website or your product/service information to get recommendations.

As for the topic, you can scroll through all the given options or enter a word, phrase or URL to find related topics.

topic choices for youtube video ads

Step 6. Select your ideal ad placement

Next, choose which placements you want to target. This allows you to be more specific with where you want your ad to appear. If you don’t select any placement option, Google will show your ad on any YouTube or Display Network placements matching your other targeting choices.

ad placement choices for youtube video ads

Step 7. Choose your advertising video

The next step is to choose which video you want to use as your ad. You can either search for the video using a keyword or paste the video URL. On the right pane, you’ll have the option to upload your video if you don’t have it on YouTube yet. But remember, we already uploaded a video ad in Step 1, so search or paste that video’s URL here.

Step 8. Customize your YouTube video ad

Once you select the video you want to use, you can customize it as needed. First, select the ad format you want to use and this will give you a preview of how your ad will appear on mobile and desktop.

If you choose to run a video discovery ad, you’ll have the option to choose between multiple thumbnails, so make sure you select something that will immediately capture the audience’s attention.

youtube video ad customization options

If you choose to run a skippable in-stream ad, make sure you include the destination URL for viewers who click on your ad. And don’t forget to add a call-to-action, as this will give people an even better reason to interact with the ad.

Additionally, you’ll also have the option to upload a companion banner image or leave it to Google to autogenerate one from your channel.

Click on “Create campaign” to complete the process.

YouTube marketing can be an intimidating tool for brands. It combines a strategic principle — SEO — with one of the most resource-intensive forms of media — video. How to Create a YouTube Channel

So, you’ve decided to create a YouTube channel . Great! Now, you’ll need a YouTube Marketing strategy to help you identify goals, decide on video topics, and properly promote your brand on your new channel.

Before we dive in, it’s important to note that maintaining a YouTube channel takes a lot of time and planning. Are you ready for it?

Unlike other social networking platforms, YouTube exclusively hosts video content. You’ll need to set aside time to plan, film, edit, market, and analyze your content on a consistent basis. You’ll also need to define your brand’s goals and plan for how video can specifically help you achieve these. If you can devote an appropriate amount of time and energy to the platform, you’ll be able to create engaging, shareable content for your growing audience.

Creating a Google Account

Before you start filming video content, you’ll need to set up your YouTube channel. Because YouTube is owned by Google, when you sign up for a Gmail account, you automatically gain access to a YouTube account, a Google+ account, and much more.

Depending on your business, you may not want to tie your email to your business’s YouTube channel — especially if you need to share access to the account with team members or an agency partner. We suggest that you create a common email account that can be used by multiple people.

Step 1: Visit Google and click Sign in in the upper right-hand corner.

Step 2: Click on Create account at the bottom of the page.

Step 3: You’ll see an option pop up to create an account for yourself or to manage your business. Since your YouTube account will be for your business, choose To manage my business .

Step 4: To officially create your Google account, enter your name and desired email and password before clicking Next . Then, enter a recovery email and your birthday, gender, and phone number.

Note : Google requires all users to be at least 13 years old.

Step 5: Lastly, agree to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service and verify your account with a code sent via text or phone call. Congrats! You’re now the proud owner of a Google account.

Creating a YouTube Account

Now that you have a Google account, you’re almost ready to publish some awesome video content.

But, we’re not done quite yet — you now need to set up a YouTube Brand Account. A Brand Account allows users to manage editing permissions and create a more holistic online presence.

Step 1: Visit YouTube . In the upper right-hand corner, note that you’re probably already logged into your new Google account. (If you’re not, click Sign in and enter your new Google account username and password.)

Step 3: To add a profile picture, click on the default profile picture in the upper left-hand corner of your channel to upload an image.

Note : It may take several minutes for your channel icon to appear after uploading.

Step 4: Next, upload your banner image and video watermark.

After you have customized the visual elements for your channel, click Basic info to add a channel description, a company email, and links to your company website and other social platforms.

Adding basic info to YouTube channel

With the basic profile complete, it’s time to add a few finishing touches! Before we move on, you should know that you can customize the way your YouTube channel looks to subscribers and unsubscribed visitors. This means that unsubscribed viewers would see different featured content than dedicated, subscribed viewers. Pretty cool, right?

One of the main ways you can take advantage of this feature is by adding a channel trailer for people who haven't subscribed and adding a featured video for returning subscribers.

Adding a trailer or a featured video share the same process, so follow the steps below to do both.

Pro Tip: You’ll want to record two different videos if you plan to have separate content for each audience.

Step 1: Start by uploading your first video to youTube. Select Content in the menu on the left side. Then, click Upload Videos.

Setting Permissions for Your YouTube Brand Account

Before you start implementing your YouTube marketing plan, you should decide who on your team will need access to the account. Granting access to team members will allow them to help manage the channel through their own Google accounts.

When you grant access to a Google account, there are three options for roles:

  • Owner: Owners have full editing power over all company Google properties. They can add or remove managers, edit business information, respond to reviews, and more.
  • Manager : Managers have the same editing powers as Owners, except they cannot add or remove page roles or remove listings. Anyone editing a YouTube channel must be a Manager or an Owner.
  • Communications Manager : Communications Managers can respond to reviews and do several other actions but they cannot use YouTube’s video manager, upload content, or view analytics.

Step 1: To add individuals to your account, tap your Google account icon in the upper right-hand corner to open the drop-down menu and go to Settings .

YouTube Brand Guidelines

Your YouTube channel is an extension of your brand, and it should be treated as such. As you create and customize your channel, follow these YouTube brand guidelines so you can properly establish your channel’s identity and begin to attract subscribers.

  • Channel name: Your channel name is associated with every single video you publish. Make sure it’s correct and consistent with your other social media sites and overall branding.
  • Channel icon: Google recommends uploading an 800 x 800 px square or round image. Your channel icon is similar to a Facebook profile picture. This image will be used across all of your Google properties including Gmail. Consider using a company logo or, if you are a public figure, a professional headshot.
  • Brand visuals: Upload a 2560 x 1440 px image that will scale well across a desktop, tablet, mobile, and TV.
  • Channel description: Your description should provide more information on your company and explain what type of video content you plan on sharing. Search engines look at your description when determining how to rank your profile, so incorporate relevant keywords in your overview. We’ll talk more about how to optimize specific video descriptions below.
  • Channel trailer: Your trailer should be short and sweet (around 30 to 60 seconds). Focus on showing visitors what your channel is about and what they can expect to see in your videos. Your trailer won’t be interrupted by ads, which will keep the user focused on why they should watch more videos from your brand. At the end, don't forget to encourage them to subscribe.
  • Channel URL: Your channel may be eligible for a custom URL if you have over 100 subscribers, a channel icon, channel art, and is more than 30 days old. Learn more about custom YouTube URLs here .
  • Channel links: Link to all other social media accounts and relevant websites from the “About” section of your channel. Make it easy for subscribers to connect with you elsewhere.

How to Optimize Your YouTube Videos for SEO

Now that your YouTube channel is up and running, let’s talk about search optimization.

Remember how we mentioned that YouTube is the second largest search engine? While creating engaging content is a must, it’s not the only factor for success. There are several things you can do to optimize your videos to rank highly on both YouTube and within the Google search results.

The first step to becoming a YouTube marketing pro is creating and optimizing your video’s metadata. Simply put, metadata gives viewers information about your video, which includes your video’s title, description, tags, category, thumbnail, subtitles, and closed captions.

Providing the right information in your video’s metadata ensures that it is properly indexed by YouTube and appears when people are searching for videos like yours. Be succinct and straightforward when filling out your metadata — your content could be removed if you try to promote it with unrelated keywords. Check out the video below to learn more about optimizing your video for search.

youtube ads presentation

Just like with on-page SEO, it’s important to optimize your video’s title and description . Titles are what people first read when scrolling through a list of videos, so make sure yours is clear and compelling — it should make searchers curious about your content or make obvious that your video will help them solve a problem.

Do some keyword research to better understand what viewers are searching for. Include the most important information and keywords at the beginning of your title. Lastly, keep titles to around 60 characters to keep text from being cut off in results pages.

Description

YouTube will only show the first two to three lines (about 100 characters) of your video’s description. To read beyond that, viewers will need to click “Show more” to see the rest. For that reason, always include important links or CTAs at the beginning of your description and write the copy so that it drives views and engagement.

Consider including the video transcript in the description, too. Video transcripts can greatly improve your SEO because your video is usually full of keywords. Add a default channel description that includes links to your social channels, video credits, and video-specific time stamps. You can also include #hashtags in your video titles and descriptions — just be sure to use them sparingly.

Next, highlight the main keywords in your tags. Tags associate your video with similar videos, which broadens its reach. When tagging videos, tag your most important keywords first and try to include a good mix of more common keywords and long-tail keywords.

After you upload a video, YouTube will allow you to choose a video category under Manage Videos . Video categories group your video with related content on the platform.

To select a category, choose Category from the dropdown list under Edit .

how to choose a category for a youtube video

YouTube allows you to sort your video into one of the following categories: Film & Animation, Autos & Vehicles, Music, Pets & Animals, Sports, Travel & Events, Gaming, People & Blogs, Comedy, Entertainment, News & Politics, How-to & Style, Educations, Science & Technology, and Nonprofits & Activism.

how to sort categories for a youtube video

Video thumbnails are the main images viewers see when scrolling through a list of video results, and yours can have a large impact on the number of clicks and views your video receives. YouTube will auto-generate a few thumbnail options for your video, but we highly recommend uploading a custom thumbnail.

YouTube reports that “90% of the best performing videos on YouTube have custom thumbnails". When filming, think of high-quality shots that accurately represent your video. YouTube recommends using a 1280 x 720 px image to ensure that your thumbnail looks great on all screen sizes.

Note : You must verify your YouTube account to upload a custom thumbnail image. You can do this by visiting youtube.com/verify and entering the verification code YouTube sends you.

SRT Files (Subtitles & Closed Captions)

Not only do subtitles and closed captions help viewers, but they also help optimize your video for search by giving you another opportunity to highlight important keywords. You can add subtitles or closed captions by uploading a supported text transcript or timed subtitles file. You can also provide a full transcript of the video and have YouTube time the subtitles automatically, type the subtitles or translation as you watch the video, or hire a professional to translate or transcribe your video.

Step 1: To add subtitles or closed captions, go to Your channel and select Subtitles in the menu on the left side.

Cards and End Screens (Annotations)

Instead of annotations (which were sunsetted in May 2017), YouTube encourages users to incorporate cards and end screens in their videos to poll viewers, link to external sites, or direct people to other videos.

Thankfully, cards and end screens are as easy to add as annotations . Cards are small, rectangular notifications that appear in the top right-hand corner of both desktop and mobile screens. You can include up to five cards per video, but if you’re including multiple cards, be sure to space them out evenly to give viewers time to take the desired action.

Cards aren’t yet available in YouTube Studio. To add cards, click Creator Studio Classic in the left menu to follow these steps.

Step 3: Once you’ve created your card, drag it to the spot in the video you want it to appear. Your changes will be saved automatically.

End screens allow you to extend your video for 5-20 seconds to direct viewers to other videos or channels on YouTube, encourage viewers to subscribe to your channel or promote external links, such as ones that direct to your website. End screens encourage users to continue engaging with your brand or content.

Step 4: To add an end screen, head to your video manager , click the drop-down edit arrow , and choose End screen.

Step 5: Then choose which elements you’d like to add to your end screen. You can add elements by importing an end screen you used in another video, using a template, or creating elements manually.

Note : YouTube requires users to promote another YouTube video or a playlist in part of the end screen.

Are you creating videos around a few specific themes? Playlists might be the perfect tool for you! Playlists allow you to curate a collection of videos from both your channel and other channels. Not only do playlists help to organize your channel and encourage viewers to continue watching similar content, but they also show up separately in search results. Creating playlists provides you with more discoverable content.

To create a new playlist, go to a video you’d like to add and click +Add to under the video. Next, select Create new playlist. Type in the name of the playlist you want to feature and click Create .

How to Create Videos for Social Media

Now that your YouTube channel is set up, it’s time to start populating it with content. This is where the fun begins!

In this section, we’ll talk about some different types of videos you can create and how to film and edit them. Overwhelmed? Feeling uninspired? Check out our list of great video advertising and marketing campaigns for creative ideas to inspire your next project.

8 Types of YouTube Videos to Create

Before you start filming, decide what type of video would help you achieve your goal.

1. Customer Testimonials

Customer testimonials are short-form interviews with satisfied customers. Customer testimonials can help build company and product credibility.

2. On-demand Product Demonstration Videos

Demonstration videos are short pieces of content showing the benefits and proper use of a product.

3. Explainer and Tutorial Videos

Explainer videos are in-depth videos explaining how to use a product or various parts of a product or service. Tutorials can be used to answer customer support questions or explain a new product feature.

4. Thought Leader Interviews

Interviews with experts or thought leaders can help amplify your company’s credibility in an industry.

5. Project Reviews and Case Studies

Project reviews or case studies recap a successful campaign or project and often include statistics and results.

6. YouTube Live

YouTube Live allows users to broadcast live content to viewers. Live video allows you to easily share unfiltered moments and lets your audience participate with real-time comments and reactions. Live videos on YouTube are recorded and appear like any other video upload.

Go Live from your YouTube channel by clicking the camera+ icon in the top right corner and choosing Go live .

7. Video Blogs

Video blogs are daily or weekly videos documenting daily life or events. You could also record a video that summarizes or highlights a blog post so your audience has multiple ways to digest the content.

8. Event Videos

Event videos feature in-person experiences at a conference or expo and can be a great way to show the excitement of a crowd.

Writing Your Video Script

1. define your goal..

Like for any good campaign or published content, it’s important to establish what you want to accomplish with your video before you get into the nuts and bolts of bringing it to life.

Do you want to increase awareness for your brand? Drive inbound website traffic? Add subscribers to your channel? Increase social shares? Or do something else entirely?

Establishing a singular goal at the start of the production process is key and will allow you to focus the video’s script and strategy on accomplishing it. It’s perfectly OK to have multiple goals for your YouTube channel, like increasing brand awareness and adding subscribers, but the best practice is to focus on one goal per video.

2. Create a storyboard and write the lines.

Once you’ve established the goal for your video, put on your creativity hat and start working on your storyboard. A storyboard is like a blueprint for your video and serves as an outline for the shoot.

You’ve probably even seen one before. Storyboards look like comic strips and include rough sketches of different scenes paired with short descriptive information about the scene, camera position and motion, and dialogue. They vary in the level of detail included, but your storyboard should, at the very least, include:

  • A frame for each major scene or location change
  • Basic descriptive information about the scene (time of day, weather, mood of the characters, etc.)
  • Lines for each scene
  • Camera direction for motion and shot details (i.e. tight, medium, or wide shots)

3. Decide on additional multimedia elements.

If your video is going to include graphics, title slides, or other multimedia elements, you should plan out the placement and content for those pieces in advance. These elements can be incorporated into your storyboards so the video’s content flows seamlessly.

4. Determine the video length.

As you create your storyboard, you’ll also want to decide how long your video you should be. On YouTube, videos under two minutes have the highest chance of being watched to the end which does wonders for your engagement rate.

Your video should be just long enough to deliver the key messages that align with its goal. If you do create a longer video, experiment with how you present content — the pacing, story arc, and visuals — to keep viewers interested throughout.

5. Pick a filming location (or multiple).

You’ve determined your video goal, created a storyboard, and decided on the ideal video length needed to deliver your message. Now it’s time to find your filming locations.

In the film industry, this step is called location scouting, and like every other step in this process, it’s an important part of creating a compelling video. To get started, take a look at your storyboard, and create a list of the different locations each scene requires. Depending on your video concept, you may only need one location ... or you may need a new location for each scene.

Friends, coworkers, and even family can be great resources here for finding the locations you need. Keep in mind that for some locations, like businesses and other private property, you will need permission from the owner to film. To keep things simple, it’s best to find your locations through people you know — at least for your first few productions.

Visit each location before the shoot. On your scouting trips, make sure you’ll be able to capture the kinds of shots you want for your video. Typically, it’s better to have more space so you can adjust the camera position as needed. You should also check for any loud or ambient noise like busy roads or air conditioning units that could interfere with your audio when filming, and consider the light and time of day. While the room might have sufficient light in the morning, you may need to bring a lighting kit in to film during the afternoon or even

6 Essential Tips for Shooting Quality Video

After all that prep work, it’s finally time to start filming your video. Don’t own a fancy camera or have the budget to rent one? Don’t worry! Advances in smartphone cameras have made it possible to film great content with just a phone.

If you are filming your video with a phone, be sure to turn it sideways and film in landscape mode. This will prevent awkward cropping or framing when you upload the video to YouTube, which natively supports the landscape format. No matter what you’re filming with, these tips can help your video to look professional and stay engaging for your viewers.

1. Use a tripod.

You want viewers to focus on your story, not the shakiness of the camera. For static shots, be sure to place your camera on a tripod or another level surface.

2. Set your camera to manual mode.

If you’re able to, set your camera to full manual mode . This will allow you to adjust the focus and other settings as needed to properly expose and focus your shots.

3. Shoot from different angles and distances.

For each scene, make sure you film from a few positions so you can edit between the clips. For an interview or video focused on a single individual, this may mean moving the camera from facing the scene head-on to filming from a 45-degree angle.

You can also try to move the camera closer and further away or zooming in and out for more variety. Cutting between different angles and distances will keep your video visually interesting and engaging for your viewers.

4. Film more than you think you need.

You can always cut out footage, but sometimes it’s not possible to go back and capture more. To make sure you have the clips you need, shoot multiple takes of each scene. To make sure you don’t miss a moment, countdown from five before you start the action and before you finish recording.

5. Introduce motion.

If you have a slider or Steadicam , try including camera movement in your video. Even subtle movement from left to right or in and out can add intrigue to your clips.

6. Use a good microphone.

If you plan on having audio in your video, be sure to use a high-quality microphone to capture the audio. There are many different microphone choices that record audio separately from the camera. There are even mics you can plug into your smartphone for better audio on the go.

Editing Your Video Content

There are many options for editing tools and software. Depending on your operating system, your computer may come with free editing software such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. These programs provide basic editing tools, like the ability to cut clips together, add titles, and add limited effects and color correction. There are also higher-end, more expensive options such as Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere CC, which offer an array of editing tools. YouTube even has its own online editing platform you can use to compile your clips and edit together your video.

Video Thumbnails

Once your video is ready to upload, YouTube allows you to select the video thumbnail that will appear on your channel, in search results, and on the right-hand column. We recommend uploading your own custom thumbnail — as we talked about above .

You can also add a custom watermark to all of your videos. To do so, navigate to the branding section of the Creator Studio. The watermark serves as a custom subscribe button that viewers can click anytime when watching your videos.

Step 1: To add a watermark, go to your YouTube Studio and click on Settings .

Step 2: Select Other settings > Channel branding .

Step 3: You should be directed to a screen where you can select Add a watermark . Then, follow the instructions to upload a file.

Music & Sound Effects

Professional quality music and sound effects can make the difference between a successful video and a seemingly amateur one. Fortunately, cinema quality sounds are now readily available, even if your videos don’t have Hollywood-size budgets.

When selecting music for your video, first consider the overall mood you’d like to create. Music is one of the most valuable tools for setting the tone of a video and often informs the editing style, camera movement, and on-camera action. If you’re introducing your brand to a new audience, you probably want to select music that is upbeat and energetic.

The second key part of picking music is obtaining the necessary permissions to use the song. What you’re looking for here are songs marked as “royalty-free.” This doesn’t mean the music will be free, but it does mean you only pay a flat rate to use the music and won’t have to pay additional royalties or licensing fees on top of that.

Some great resources for royalty-free music are Pond5 , Epidemic Sound , and PremiumBeat . Both services include thousands of professionally recorded and produced songs in a multitude of genres at varying lengths and tempos. PremiumBeat and Pond5 both include a large library of sound effects to add texture and depth to your videos. Sometimes, it only takes a subtle sound effect layer in the background of a scene to elevate the production quality of your video and really pull your audience into the story.

Now that you’ve produced a video and optimized it for search, let’s talk about how to market your YouTube channel and videos. While ranking high in search results and having a large subscriber base are ideal, those goals can be difficult to achieve when you’re just starting out.

That’s why it’s important to always spread the word about your YouTube channel and videos across other platforms. Fortunately, YouTube and other platforms make it easy to share video content. Below are some tips for how to best promote your YouTube content on other channels.

How to Market Your YouTube Channel

Social media.

Sharing your videos on social media is an easy way to add additional insights to your video and engage with viewers. YouTube makes it incredibly simple for you and others to promote your video across other social networks. To share a video , just click the “Share” tab underneath the video. There you can select where to market the video. YouTube even provides a shortened URL to your video for convenient posting.

When promoting your YouTube channel or videos on your social media sites, consider the best marketing strategy. Simply sharing the video on your timeline or feed may not be the most effective option. Think of why you made the video. Maybe you created a tutorial because users were asking a lot of questions about how to use your product.

In that case, it might be best to respond to those questions with a link to your video. If you created a video as part of a larger campaign or global trend, be sure to include relevant #hashtags where appropriate to ensure your video is included in the conversation. If you created a video to build awareness around your brand, consider posting the link in your profile bios.

Blog Posts and Website

Market your YouTube channel and videos on your website and blog. First, add a YouTube follow icon to your website and blog so your audience can easily find your channel. Second, embed relevant videos on your website or in blog posts. Consider creating a YouTube video to accompany a specific blog post or sharing customer video reviews or case studies on your website. Not only will this help market your YouTube channel and videos, but it will also drive traffic to your website.

To add a YouTube video to your blog or website, copy the embed code under the video you want to feature. Check step-by-step embed instructions to learn how to do this without slowing down your website.

youtube marketing social media

While you’re on the quest to find and attract new customers and leads, don’t forget about the ones you already have. Share your video content and channel with relevant email lists. Encourage your contacts to check out a video you've embedded into a blog post to increase both the video and website traffic or direct them to a relevant playlist you’ve curated. Sending an email newsletter with valuable information and video content is another great way to keep your contacts engaged.

Q&A Sites

Do your videos help solve a problem or answer a question? If so, engaging with popular Q&A sites like Quora might be a great marketing technique for your business. Monitor questions and share video content users will find helpful.

Collaborate With Others

Does your company have a relationship with another company that has a great YouTube presence? Ask them to collaborate! Collaborating with others is a fun way for both channels to gain exposure to another audience. Create a video or playlist together. There are a lot of options to creatively collaborate with other brands, just make sure that their audience and goal are similar to yours. The partnership should align with your marketing strategy.

Engage With Viewers

Finally, be sure to engage with your viewers. Respond to comments, answer questions, ask for feedback, and thank viewers for their support. This is an easy task to forget or let fall by the wayside so try to choose a dedicated time to check video interactions and respond to users.

8 YouTube Marketing Strategy Tips for Your YouTube Channel and Videos

Above, we touched on some components to build a high-level marketing strategy for your YouTube videos. In this section, we’re going to discuss some tips for how to best promote your YouTube content.

  • Keep your channel branding consistent with your other social media accounts.
  • Optimize your title and description for SEO and searcher intent.
  • Feature real people or animated faces in your videos, not just words or B-roll.
  • Choose a video thumbnail that accurately represents your video content.
  • Include calls-to-action (CTAs) in every video.
  • Make it easy for others to share your videos.
  • Create playlists that feature your videos and others.
  • Produce videos on a regular basis, and consider doing a video series.

Social Media Content Calendar Template

You’ve put a lot of time and effort into your YouTube channel. You’ve created interesting content, optimized it for SEO, and shared it across different platforms … now it’s time to measure your success.

YouTube Analytics can seem daunting at first. Let’s face it, interpreting a bunch of numbers and strange-looking graphs can be pretty challenging. Thankfully, understanding YouTube Analytics is pretty straightforward once you know your way around it.

1. Determine your goal.

First things first, you can’t measure your success without determining your goal . If you’ve filmed, edited, uploaded, optimized, and shared your video and still don’t know what goal you’re trying to achieve, we have an issue. Your goal should drive your video strategy from beginning to end.

You should focus on targeting one goal per video (as we talk about here ). Some of the most common video goals are to increase brand awareness, views, clicks, or inbound links or social shares. Depending on how you use the video in your marketing material, the goal could be to increase the open rate of an email series or improve the conversion rate on a landing page. YouTube is a great platform for growing brand awareness.

As the world’s second-largest search engine, YouTube allows your videos to be seen through organic search or paid advertising. Video is a great way to humanize your brand by showcasing real employees, customers, or partners. It also allows you to build credibility by publishing informational content that helps your target buyer. Promoting your videos through paid advertising versus organic search can impact the type of video you should create. If you’re planning to increase awareness organically, consider filming the history of your company, customer reviews, or product tutorials.

2. Track key metrics.

Now that we’ve talked about why determining a goal is so important, we can discuss how to effectively measure success. At first glance, YouTube analytics can be pretty overwhelming. On the flip side, it’s frustrating when you post a video and don’t receive as many views or as much engagement as you were expecting. YouTube analytics shows you how viewers found your content, how long they watched it, and how much they engaged with it. Let’s start by going over what exactly you can measure and how to find it.

First, head to youtube.com/analytics . You should be directed to an analytics dashboard that shows an overview of how your videos have been performing during the past 28 days. You can adjust the analytics timeframe by clicking on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner. The overview report features some top-line performance metrics, engagement metrics, demographics, traffic sources, and popular content.

You can also filter your results by content, device type, geography or location, all video content or playlists, subscriber status, playback type, traffic by different YouTube products, and translations. In addition to filtering results, YouTube allows you to display your results in a variety of different charts and even an interactive map.

While there's no one-size-fits-all approach for reporting and measuring the success of a campaign, below are a few key metrics that you should pay attention to.

Watch Time and Audience Retention

Watch time reports the total number of minutes your audience has spent viewing your content on your channel as a whole and by video. This helps you see what pieces of content viewers are actually consuming instead of just clicking on and navigating away from.

Watch time is important because it’s one of YouTube’s ranking factors . A video with a higher watch time is more likely to rank higher in results. YouTube provides a line item report on watch time, views, average view duration, and average percentage viewed for individual videos, location, publish date, and more.

A video’s average percentage viewed, or retention rate indicates the average percentage of a video your audience watches per view. A higher percentage means there’s a higher chance that your audience will watch that video until the end. Try placing cards and end screens in videos with a higher average percentage viewed rate to improve the number of views your calls-to-action receive.

Traffic Sources

The traffic sources report shows how viewers are finding your content online. This provides valuable insight on where to best promote your YouTube content. For example, you can see if viewers are finding your content through YouTube search or Twitter. To view more in-depth traffic reporting, click on the overall traffic source category. This data can help refine your YouTube marketing strategy. Be sure to optimize your metadata based on your findings.

Demographics

The demographics report helps you understand your audience by reporting on their age and gender. You can then break down age groups and genders by other criteria such as geography. This report will help you better market to your YouTube audience and understand if your content is resonating with your established buyer personas.

Engagement Reports

Engagement reports help you learn what content is resonating with your audience. Here you can see what viewers are clicking , sharing, commenting, and promoting. You can also see how your cards and end screens are performing in your engagement reports. Cards and end screens reports help you learn what your audience is engaging with so you can optimize your calls-to-action in future videos.

Guide to Social Media Advertising

How to Run a YouTube Advertising Campaign

In addition to driving organic traffic to your content, there are also several paid options for promoting your video on YouTube . In this section, we’ll dive into some of the basics on how to run a YouTube advertising campaign.

Cost of Advertising on YouTube

YouTube uses a cost per view (CPV) model, which means you only pay when someone engages with your video ad. If your ad is skipped, you aren’t charged for that view. The exact cost-per-click varies based on keyword competitiveness, but, on average, it’s around $0.06. YouTube mentions that most businesses start with about $10 per day for local ad campaigns. Once you set your daily campaign budget, YouTube will display your ad until the daily budget is spent.

Types of YouTube Ads

1. video discovery ads.

TrueView video discovery ads appear on the YouTube homepage, within search results, and as related videos on YouTube video watch pages. When a user clicks on one of these ads, they're redirected to the promoted video.

2. In-Stream Ads

In-stream ads refer to ads that play within a YouTube video. TrueView in-stream ads play before a viewer watches the video they’ve selected on YouTube. These ads can be customized with different overlay text and CTAs, and viewers usually have the option to skip the ad after watching the first five seconds. In addition to the pre-roll in-stream ads that play before the video, there are also mid-roll video ads that appear midway through YouTube videos that are 10 minutes or longer.

vidooly youtube analytics software

Whether you run a media company, an agency, or if you’re an independent content creator, Vidooly analytics software can handle it all. Included in the product suite are four products:

  • A leaderboard to benchmark growth against other video publishers
  • A brand intelligence tool to help you make informed decisions about your YouTube marketing strategy
  • A brand safety tool that helps you run brand-safe video campaigns

You can use each tool separately or combine them to build a robust dashboard to track your YouTube strategy.

1. Set a publishing schedule and stick to it.

YouTube watchers are loyal to the channels they subscribe to, and they expect that those channels produce content regularly . Being inconsistent is one of the biggest mistakes new YouTubers make when starting their channel. Publishing one video per month can help you stay more consistent than publishing a video every week, but taking a two-week break unexpectedly.

2. Make the upfront investment for publishing video.

Have you determined whether you’ll be on camera or someone else on your team? Perhaps you’ll be hiring talent externally specifically to present your video content? Do you have an in-house editor or will you outsource production? No matter which setup you choose for your business channel, be prepared to make an upfront investment before you publish your first video. Digital information estimates the cost of DIY YouTube production may run you about $1,300 to $10,000.

3. Keep your revenue expectations reasonable for the first year.

If your goal is to make money from your YouTube channel, understanding the way AdSense revenue is distributed will help you manage your goals and expectations. It’s widely known that YouTube channels receive 68% of AdSense revenue from Google once they’ve garnered enough traffic to bring in views consistently. That’s the key to building a YouTube channel, you may not make much money on your first few videos, but being consistent can be lucrative in the long run.

Ready, Set, Action

With 2.1 billion active users , YouTube is not merely a home for funny videos anymore. YouTube is a serious marketing platform that provides your brand with the opportunity to promote content in a truly visual and engaging way.

It’s essential to practice inbound marketing techniques when marketing your YouTube channel and videos. Create content that shares an interesting story and provides your viewers with valuable information. Market that content across different platforms, including social, email, and your company blog or website. Optimize your content by including cards and end screens with clear CTAs.

YouTube may seem overwhelming at first, but the platform makes it very easy to share and digest content. Your audience wants to learn, be entertained, and engage with your brand through video, so be sure to follow this guide to make the most out of your YouTube marketing strategy.

Top 10 YouTube Ad Examples You Can Learn From in 2023

Octavia Drexler

YouTube has over two million active users who watch billions of hours of content daily. As such, it is one of the most popular platforms for marketing and advertising campaigns. Companies worldwide rely on YouTube to reach their target audience with video ads that capture attention and drive conversions.

And if you’re among them, you know how inspiring YouTube ad examples can be when you want to build your own campaigns.

What are the best YouTube ads of 2023 and how are they standing out in a sea of competition? Let’s take a look at some of the top YouTube ad examples that have been making waves this year.

1. Upside Gets You Cash Back for Doing You

Released at the beginning of 2023, this ad has perfect timing: because what better time to start saving, other than January, when all those New Year’s resolutions are still going strong? Not only is this ad perfectly timed, though, it also manages to be absolutely memorable, funny, and hard to ignore.

The music, the colors, the positive vibes—everything about Upside’s ad invites you to:

  • Definitely not hit the “Skip” button
  • And give the product a try

2. T-Mobile’s New Year. New Neighbor

You can’t go wrong with hit pop culture songs and a slew of celebrities popping up in your ad, especially when those celebrities include John Travolta. T-Mobile’s play on “Summer Nights” (from the “Grease” movie) is an act of pure genius. Because how else would you advertise mobile internet, other than by using a high-energy tune, unforgettable lyrics, and a lot of humor?

This ad wins the hearts of people everywhere because it’s:

  • Unexpectedly creative

It’s very difficult to say anything new about internet services, but T-Mobile brought their A-game to the table with this one—and won.

3. Netflix’s Wednesday Teaser

To say Wednesday Addams took the world by storm at the end of 2022 is a severe understatement. Fans of the Addams Family franchise had always appreciated her, but creating a show dedicated solely to her was one of the most brilliant moves in the franchise’s history.

And, of course, the show needed advertising to suit the occasion. Netflix took the plunge and created a teaser ad that was:

  • Captivating
  • Absolutely perfect for both the audience it was intended for AND true to the Addams Family franchise

Glimpses of the TV series show Wednesday as she goes through a rite of passage from her “normal” highschool to Nevermore, a school dedicated for the magical kids and as she discovers friendship, love, and belonging on her way. Subtle, exciting, and definitely worthy of the hype, this ad makes you want to turn on the TV (or buy a Netflix subscription if you don’t have one yet).

4. Jeep’s 4xe “Electric Boogie”

This ad should be a study in how to stay true to your brand and positioning AND still manage to win the hearts of people who might be outside your target audience. Cute animals and uplifting music are not always what you’d associate with Jeep cars but this ad blends them perfectly.

The entire ad is an explosion of color, energy, and cuteness. And what’s best about it is that Jeep’s car fits perfectly in the context. Not to mention that the “Freedom is electric” tagline is a total winner!

5. Zapier’s “On/Off”

Automation and humor don’t seem to be a match made in Heaven, but when you make the right associations, greatness ensues. Like this ad from Zapier, for example: connecting software to automate tasks seems like one of the dullest things in the world (albeit very effective , just take a look at how Creatopy integrates with everything you need, for example).

But in this example of a YouTube ad, Zapier somehow managed to whip up their magic wands and create an ad that is as relevant as it is engaging. Connecting automation with magic is no happenstance, for sure, but the execution of this ad is flawless:

  • And the perfect example of how automation can make life easier

6. reMarkable’s “Introducing the Paper Tablet”

Not many ads manage to transfer the sensorial experience of the physical product into video—much less when senses make for one of the product’s largest selling points. Yet, reMarkable created one of the best YouTube ads of the year precisely by tapping into the senses.

The ad starts with a busy room, coffee machine sounds, and then gracefully segues into focus, the main idea of the entire narrative (and the main promise reMarkable makes with their paper tablets).

7. ClickUp’s “When I First Heard of ClickUp”

ClickUp wins YouTube ads by a mile, especially in a category that seems as boring as they come in the Software as a Service industry. And yet time and again, ClickUp shows there’s nothing boring about their product and that you don’t have to create dull ads in SaaS.

The ClickUp – kick-up pun is masterfully put in images, and the already contagious humor ClickUp has accustomed us with is everpresent in every single second of the 1:10 ad. Project management tools have literally never been as exciting (or funny!).

8. General Motors and Netflix’s “Why Not an EV?”

To start with, Netflix and General Motors is not an association you would normally make. And much less so when they bring Will Farrel into the mix. Yet, they did it.

The main point of the ad is to creatively underline using EVs in Netflix shows (as a way to promote a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional engines). They do so by following Will Farrel drive through TV series and movie tropes encountered in Netflix shows: zombies, kidnapping, Victorian love stories, and so on.

Of course, as you’d expect from an ad Will Farrel stars in, the entire clip is filled with humor, energy, and witty references, a true delight to watch, even if you’re “not that much into advertising.”

9. Grammarly’s “Move Projects Forward”

Grammarly is not new to YouTube ad fame, but this time they made a comeback with an ad that’s so real it builds rapport almost instantly (so much so you won’t want to skip the ad). The deadline lurking behind the ad’s main theme, the way the product is weaved into the story, the energy the entire clip carries—all of it works in perfect harmony to make this ad one of the best YouTube advertising examples of the year.

The promise made by Grammarly’s ad? To not just “get things done” when it comes to grammar, but also use language intelligently to help you move projects forward and produce results.

10. Skullcandy’s “Meet Rail® ANC”

Same as Grammarly, Skullcandy is a recurrent name in lists that celebrate the best youtube advertising and they did not disappoint this time either.

The “Meet Rail ANC” clip is a prime example of epic hype, on-brand references, and engaging ad storytelling that blends features and benefits in a seamless way. Plus, the soundtrack is really good (which is kind of what you’d expect from an ad promoting headphones, right?).

Reminiscent of Apple’s old iPod ads in style, but updated to modern taste, this ad is a scroll-stopper (or, better said, a thumb-stopper) you’ll want to watch.

What Are All These YouTube Ad Examples Doing Right?

Despite what social media gurus are saying, there’s no set recipe for doing advertising right. It all comes down to knowing who your customers are, who you are, and what are the best communication highways to connect the two.

Each and every ad in this article shows how, done right, YouTube ads can be a powerful way to both entertain and communicate without coming off as “salesy” or out of place.

Not that it’s easy, but when you have the right creative and strategic teams in sync, your ads will stand out from the rest. And the right tools can definitely help you have a smoother ride from “OK, what now” to “Oh, yes, THAT’s how!”

Not sure where to get started? Here’s a YouTube advertising guide to help you navigate the main types of YouTube ad formats , YouTube Ad sizes , and the essentials you need to know about them?

A Guide to YouTube Advertising for Course Creators (2024)

By Jeff Cobb .  Last Updated on January 19, 2024

A Guide to YouTube Advertising for Course Creators featured image

You regularly hear marketers talk about Facebook ads, Google ads, Instagram ads, and even TikTok ads these days.

But they don’t talk about YouTube ads as much.

That’s great news for online course creators and digital product sellers looking to invest in paid campaigns to drive leads and customers.

Why? Because while everyone is focused on other advertising platforms, you can quietly leverage YouTube ads to attract highly engaged students ready to purchase your online course.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to advertise on YouTube using different ad types and share proven ways to grow your digital product business with YouTube ads. (Note: You don’t have to have a YouTube channel to advertise on YouTube, but it can be a very good idea to start a YouTube channel .)

Let’s get started.

YouTube Advertising home page Grow your business with YouTube Ads

What Is YouTube Advertising?

YouTube’s advertising platform allows you to promote your products, services, online courses , and videos to YouTube’s 2 billion+ monthly active users through different ad types.

As the world’s second-largest website, YouTube gets billions of views every month from users across the globe and in all kinds of niches.

Since growing a YouTube channel and building an organic following takes time, effort, and resources, YouTube ads provide brands with an easy and cost-effective way to get their message in front of millions of relevant and highly engaged users.

Why Use YouTube Ads to Promote Your Online Course?

YouTube ads are ideal for online course creators, digital product sellers, and knowledge entrepreneurs for several reasons.

Let’s talk about them one by one.

The World’s Second Largest Search Engine

Most people know YouTube as the world’s most popular video streaming platform. But it’s also the second most frequently used search engine on the internet.

People search for all kinds of topics and questions on YouTube and find their answers by watching videos. According to research, YouTube viewers watch over 1 billion hours of video content on the platform every day.

Oberlo infographic "YouTube is the Second Most Popular Search Engine After Google"

This is exactly what you want as an advertiser. The more people use a platform, the more you can target them with relevant and engaging ads.

Highly Engaged Audience Of Learners

YouTube is the world’s biggest free university, and people from across the globe use it to learn new skills, solve problems, and acquire free education.

infographic showing 86% of US viewers say they often use YouTube to learn new things

This is why some of the world’s most popular and free learning resources can be found on YouTube.

Khan Academy YouTube Channel page, red arrow pointing at 7.29M subscribers

In short, a large percentage of YouTube users are there to learn something new. They’re highly engaged learners actively looking for useful content to improve their skills.

This makes it an ideal platform to market your online course, promote your new training program, or generate leads for a free coaching program.

More YouTube Creators In Every Niche

YouTube is the world’s most popular video streaming platform . But it’s still growing. Millions of new content creators from different countries are still discovering YouTube’s reach and influence and creating content in all kinds of niches.

This means more users from diverse backgrounds and with various interests are coming to this platform to consume more content. This only increases your options as an advertiser and provides you with a broader audience to target in your ad campaigns.

Advanced User Targeting Features

YouTube ads provide you with robust audience targeting features, which means you can show your ads to exactly the people you want.

As a YouTube advertiser, you can show ads to users based on their search history on the platform, subscribed channels, interests, location, age, language, etc. Similarly, you can run retargeting campaigns or show ads to your competitors’ audiences.

Flexible Budgets

You don’t need a million dollars to run YouTube advertising campaigns. If you’re a beginner, start with $10 and increase your spending as you optimize your ads and see more results.

Less Competitive Than Facebook And Google

YouTube’s advertising revenue makes up only a fraction of Google’s annual earnings. But YouTube’s share is on the rise.

Statista graph 2017-2021 with red arrow showing increase in YouTube's advertising revenue

It’s still not as competitive or saturated as Facebook or Google ads because many companies, entrepreneurs, and businesses still hesitate to create video ads.

But this is your opportunity.

You can create a compelling case for your online course using YouTube ads and generate hundreds of leads for your business.

Types of YouTube Ads

Now that you know why YouTube ads are ideal for online course creators, let’s discuss the different types of ads you can use on YouTube to promote your programs, offers, and digital products.

To run YouTube ads, your ad content should be hosted on YouTube. It can be an existing video on your YouTube channel or a dedicated ad video that you upload when setting up your ad.

YouTube Ad Type 1: Trueview Video Ads (Skippable in-stream ads)

Trueview video ads are the most commonly used YouTube ads that appear before, during, or after a video your target audience is watching. Users can choose to skip these ads after five seconds.

YouTube ad/Trueview ad example: 24:7 Online Business Support with GoDaddy with options to "skip ads" or "shop now"

As you can see in the screenshot, the ad CTA appears in the video player and the sidebar. So even if the user skips your ad, the sidebar CTA remains until the end of the video.

In mobile view, it appears right below the video player.

Trueview Video Ads can drive leads and traffic to your landing page/channel and create brand awareness.

You can use them in two different ways.

Trueview For Action Ads

Trueview for action ads are designed to drive engagement and clicks to your call to action button. YouTube’s advertising algorithm optimizes these ads for users more likely to click on a CTA. As a result, these ads are ideal for traffic and lead generation campaigns.

You can use them to promote your course’s landing page, lead magnet, or increase your YouTube subscribers.

YouTube uses the Cost Per View (CPV) model for these ads, where you’re charged for views (when a user watches 30 seconds of your video ad) or clicks to your CTA, whichever comes first.

Trueview For Reach Ads

Trueview for reach ads are designed to increase brand awareness and convey your message to your target audience. YouTube optimizes these ads for users who are likely to view ads longer.

They’re ideal for brand awareness campaigns where you’re looking to introduce a new problem. You can also use them to grow your YouTube channel.

YouTube uses the Cost Per 1000 Impressions (CPM) model for these ads, where an impression is counted as soon as your video ad starts playing.

YouTube Ad Type 2: Non-skippable in-stream ads

As the name suggests, non-skippable in-stream ads are ads YouTube users have to see till the end. Advertisers don’t use them as frequently as skippable ads because they’re only 15 seconds long and more suited to brand awareness campaigns.

However, they’re super effective for communicating short, focused messages that evoke curiosity in your audience and compel them to learn more.

YouTube uses the CPM (cost per 1000 impressions) model to charge for skippable ads where an impression is counted as soon as your video ad starts.

YouTube Ad Type 3: Bumper ads

Bumper ads are a subcategory of non-skippable ads since the two are identical in almost everything. However, Bumper ads are shorter than other skippable ads and can only be as long as 6 seconds.

Again, they’re ideal if your message has a strong hook and can persuade people to learn more about your offer. Like other non-skippable ads, Bumpers ads are based on the CPM pricing model.

YouTube Ad Type 4: In-Feed Video Ads

YouTube in-feed video ads, previously called “Discovery ads”, appear as regular videos with a thumbnail in various spots of a user’s YouTube feed.

For desktop users, in-feed ads appear in YouTube search results.

YouTube lead generation tips search with red box around "How to Get Leads? Get Lusha - Save Time on Lead Generation"

For mobile users, they appear in the homepage feed.

TikTok menu GoDaddy, arrow pointing at Shop Now

Plus, they appear as regular videos in a user’s related videos section. Every in-feed ad has a small “ad” label to help users identify it as paid content.

They’re great for brand consideration and communicating your message to a highly engaged audience interested in the solution you offer.

YouTube charges you every time a user clicks on your in-feed video ad or its CTA button or watches the video autoplay in the feed for more than 30 seconds.

Other YouTube Ad Types

Apart from these ad types, YouTube offers Masthead, Outstream, and non-video ads for different marketing goals.

However, these ads aren’t as relevant to online course creators and digital product sellers. They are mainly used by eCommerce and SaaS companies or different organizations for brand awareness and event promotions.

How To Advertise On YouTube | 6 Steps To Creating A YouTube Ad

So, how do you create a YouTube ad to promote your online course and drive traffic and leads to your landing pages?

Let me break down the process in easy to understand steps.

Step 1: Start A YouTube Channel

You need to have a YouTube channel to run YouTube ads. You can use it to promote any content from your channel or upload dedicated video ads for your campaigns.

We’ve described the whole process of  starting a YouTube channel  in one of our previous posts. It’s free and simple and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

Step 2: Upload Your Video

Once you create your channel, it’s time to upload your video ad to YouTube. You can keep the video ad private or unlisted to ensure no one can see it when browsing your channel.

But you’ll need the video on your channel to use it in an ad campaign. We’ll talk about creating an effective video ad later in the post.

Step 3: Create A YouTube Campaign

Now that you have a channel with your video ad, you’re ready to launch your first YouTube ad campaign. There’s no dedicated platform for setting up YouTube ads. Instead, you can find them on the regular Google Ads platform.

Here are the steps to create a YouTube ad campaign.

1. Log in to your Google Ads account.

2. Click “New Campaign” in your account dashboard.

3. Choose your campaign objective. For example, if you’re looking to drive traffic to your landing page, choose “Website Traffic” or “Leads”. Or choose “Brand awareness and reach” if you want to reach a wider audience.

"What's your campaign objective?" YouTube campaign options

4. Choose “Video” as your campaign type to show ads on YouTube.

YouTube campaign settings, red box around "Video"

5. In this step, you’ll need to choose one of the ad types we discussed in the last section. Keep your goal in mind while making your choice.

YouTube campaign subtype selection and Ways to Reach goal with red boxes around "Video reach campaign" and "Efficient reach"

Campaign subtypes determine your ad types, while the options in “ways to reach your goal” determine your costs and payment models.

With this, you’ve completed the initial setup for your YouTube ad campaign. Let’s move to the next steps.

Step 4: Set Your Ad Budget

In the ad’s General Settings section, you can configure everything like its name, budget, targeting, pricing model, and several other options.

But the most important ones are budget and targeting.

In the budget section, you can set your budget type, amount, and duration.

YouTube Budget and Dates campaign selection options

In the budget type dropdown, you can set an amount for the total campaign budget or a daily budget limit. The start and end dates determine how long your campaign runs.

Step 5: Choose Your Target Audience

This is the most crucial step in configuring a YouTube ad campaign. There’s nothing complex about it, but you need to be careful while setting it up because of its impact on your campaign.

YouTube gives you detailed targeting options using which you can show your ads to exactly the users you want.

For example, you can show your ads to users in a specific country or target people who speak a particular language.

YouTube Locations, Languages settings

Similarly, you can target users based on demographics such as age, gender, parental status, and several other factors.

YouTube Demographics selection settings

In Audience Segments, you can choose from YouTube’s suggested audience segments or create a new audience based on various filters.

YouTube Audience segment selection

You can target people based on their interests, income level, marital or parental status, and numerous other factors.

Plus, you can enable the “Audience Expansion” option to allow YouTube to find users similar to your targeting criteria.

Step 6: Decide Where To Show Your Ads

Next, you need to decide where YouTube should display your ads. Once again, you have multiple options.

  • You can display ads on YouTube videos targeting specific keywords
  • You can show ads on YouTube videos on particular topics.
  • You can target specific YouTube channels or videos to show your ads.

YouTube Content selection - Where you want your ads to show, narrow reach with keywords, topics, or placements

In the keyword targeting section, you can enter a list of keywords or get keyword ideas by entering a competitor’s URL.

YouTube keywords selection options "Get keyword ideas - Hubspot"

In topic selection, you can target broad topics and subtopics to display your ads.

YouTube Topics selection page

And in the placement section, you can choose specific YouTube channels, videos, or playlists to show your ads.

Placement targeting settings with red box around YouTube channels

For lead generation or traffic generation campaigns, use these filters to find the exact audience you’re looking to target. Choose a broader audience set for brand awareness campaigns to show your ad to more users.

Step 7: Create Your Ad Unit

Finally, it’s time to create your ad unit and decide how it appears to your target audience. You can choose a video from your YouTube channel or upload one from this window.

YouTube video settings showing example of skippable in-stream ad: From 0 to 7Figures

YouTube shows you the ad preview for mobile, desktop, and smart TV so that it appears exactly the way you want.

Here’s what you configure in this section.

  • Enter the Final URL where you want users to go after clicking your ad.
  • Choose a Display URL that appears in your ad.
  • Enter your CTA text and ad headline (optional)
  • Ad thumbnail (optional)
  • Ad URL tracking parameters (optional)

Once you’re satisfied with how your ad unit looks, it’s time to finalize the campaign.

Step 7: Launch Your YouTube Ad Campaign

You’ve completed all the steps needed to launch a YouTube ad campaign. The only things left are setting your ad CPM bid and entering your credit card information.

Your Target CPM (cost-per-thousand impressions) bid is the average amount you’re willing to pay for every thousand impressions of your ad. From the Target CPM you set, Google Ads will optimize bids to help get as much unique reach as possible.

Now click Create Campaign to submit your campaign for review.

Tips For Creating High Converting YouTube Ads For Your Online Course

Knowing how to create a YouTube ad campaign isn’t enough to generate traffic and leads for your online course. You must use the right strategies that make an ad campaign more engaging, increase your ROI, and drive results.

Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Make A Strong Impression With Your YouTube Channel

You can run YouTube ads even if your channel is brand new with no previous content. But don’t do that if you’re promoting an online course.

Why? Because many users check the advertiser’s YouTube channel to explore their free content to judge their course quality.

If your channel isn’t properly branded, has little or no content, and doesn’t have much free value to offer, students might not be interested in buying your course.

Here’s an excellent example.

Alex Cattoni & the Copy Posse YouTube page

Alex Cattoni sells different copywriting courses and membership programs, and YouTube is among her primary lead generation sources. Her channel is full of great content on various aspects of copywriting that makes an immediate impression on any new user.

2. Keep Your YouTube Ads Short & Focused

YouTube recommends keeping your skippable ads under three minutes for optimum results. Unskippable ads are already capped at 15 seconds (Bumper ads at 6 seconds).

Irrespective of the ad type, you need to make the most of the first few seconds of your ad and hook your viewer before they can press the Skip button.

Why? Because research shows that  76% of YouTube users skip ads  as soon as the button becomes active.

This ad by Groove belt is an excellent example of immediately capturing the viewer’s attention.

You don’t have time for a boring introduction or a long story before getting to the point. So, dive into their problem immediately and try communicating your hook in the first 10-15 seconds, so your viewers stick longer to view the rest of the ad.

3. Use Your Audience’s Language

One of the easiest ways to hook your viewers immediately is by using their language to describe their problems. Of course, you can only do that when you thoroughly research your audience.

Nate Smith, who sells a drumming course, surveyed his target audience and used the exact words in his video ad’s opening few seconds that his audience had used to describe their problems in his survey.

The result? His course sales from  YouTube increased by 150% .

4. Tell A Story, Add Emotion

According to Harvard Business School Professor Gerald Zaltman,  95% of purchase decisions  are driven by emotion. If you want people to click your ad CTA, sign up to your list, and purchase your course, use storytelling and emotions in your advertising.

Instead of telling them how losing weight can improve their lives, show them a person who lost 100 KG and is living his best life.

Show them transformation, present heroes they can idealize, and stories they can emulate. The more you play with your audience’s emotions, the better your ad campaigns will perform.

5. Share Proof Of Your Expertise

Don’t just tell them you’re a marketing expert, show them logos of the companies you’ve helped, the marketing publications you’ve been featured in, and the books you’ve published.

Don’t tell them you’re a karate teacher, show them your best moves.

In the world of YouTube advertising, seeing is believing. So if you’re an expert, don’t be shy to show your audience.

6. Offer A Free Training Resource

This point is crucial for growing your online course with YouTube ads.

Nobody will sign up for your course straightaway. So instead, you’ll need to give them a free resource, a lead magnet, they can sign up to taste your free content and decide if your course is right for them.

For course creators, video training or webinars are the most effective lead magnets since they not only allow you to demonstrate your expertise but also engage your audience better than other lead magnets.

Set up a dedicated landing page where you can route traffic from your YouTube ads and convert them into subscribers of your free offer. From there, you can build a relationship via email marketing and pitch your premium course.

7. Use Closed Captions To Increase Reach

A study found that 69% of users watch online videos on mute. So if your videos don’t have closed captions, you’ll miss out on a significant portion of your audience. This is even more important since YouTube videos now autoplay in the user’s feed on mobile devices.

So, when creating a YouTube video campaign, make sure your ad includes closed captions in the relevant language.

9. Test Multiple Ads

Ultimately, you’ll need to test multiple ad units and compare their results to find the best-performing option. Use YouTube analytics to get the data you need to measure your campaigns and test different ads to find the ones that perfectly click with your audience.

YouTube Advertising Is Still Profitable For Online Course Creators

If you haven’t tried YouTube advertising to promote your online courses, now’s the best time to start. The market is still not as saturated as some other platforms, and costs are still under reasonable control. Try the techniques discussed in this article to engage your audience on YouTube and drive traffic to your landing pages. A few years down the line, things might not be as easy.

Discord Is Adding Ads, but With a Gamer Twist: What We Know So Far

The new ads encourage users to stream their gameplay, complete objectives, and pass challenges along to their friends.

Discord advertising

Once players complete a sponsored quest, they'll be shown a pop-up in Discord that lets them redeem rewards.

Discord, the voice and video chat service for gamers that's more recently expanded its scope , is joining the long list of free services that use ads to support their platform. The change is an about-face for a company that's long held an anti-advertising view.

Ads should start showing up on Discord within the week, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The ad slots will be offered to game developers as a way for them to get Discord users and their friends to play their games, earning the developers money from sales, in-app purchases and in-game ads.

Instead of standard ads, however, the Discord advertisements will appear in the form of "sponsored quests," Discord Senior Vice President Peter Sellis said in a blog  post  last month. When someone streams over Discord and they're playing a game with a sponsored quest, they'll have the opportunity to perform the quest while others watch. Viewers can then hop into the game and also complete the quest for rewards.

Discord reportedly said it'll target ads based on a user's gameplay, age and geographic location, but you can turn off your personalization in the app's settings.

Here's what we know so far about sponsored quests.

Sponsored quests aren't new

Sponsored quests are something Discord has tried before. The chat service collaborated  with Epic Games and Lucasfilm Games  for a sponsored quest in May 2023. Players could share Fortnite gameplay with their friends in a Discord stream, complete the quests, and earn Star Wars-inspired skins that were exclusive to the event. It's likely the new sponsored quests will work in a similar way.

Currently, you can disable quests in the app's privacy settings. However, that setting may be altered or removed when sponsored quests officially launch.

In addition to adding advertising, Discord will also ramp up its efforts to sell things such as sponsored profile flair in its shop. This initiative began last week with the release of the Valorant collection , which includes avatar decorations and profile effects inspired by the game. Such sponsored collections will join the profile flair already available in the shop.

The move to advertising comes amid a push to generate more revenue for the chat service. Discord laid off 17% of its workforce back in January. The company has attracted plenty of investors, but it's never posted a profit, despite large revenue gains over the last few years and hundreds of millions of registered users .

During an interview  with Bloomberg, Discord CEO James Citron said Discord hopes "every game will offer quests on Discord." He also told Bloomberg that Discord will likely file for an initial public offering at some point and become a publicly traded company.

For now, Discord likely hopes that sponsored quests and collections in its shop fare better than the company's game store , which lasted two years before it was axed in 2021.

How will sponsored quests work?

Developers who pay for a sponsored quest from Discord are hoping to encourage a game-playing user's friends who are watching the stream to also play their game. A sponsored quest will pop up, a game-playing user will be able to engage in the quest through Discord's interface, and once they complete the quest, other users in the stream will have the opportunity to tackle the challenge. After they finish a quest, users will be able to claim rewards to redeem in-game.

Discord promotional image for quests

When Sponsored Quests are available, players will see a pop-up while streaming and can engage with it.

What will sponsored quests look like?

Once you start streaming a game that has a sponsored quest, while friends are watching, you'll receive a prompt to engage in the quest. Once you're done, another pop-up will appear to let you know the quest is complete and that the rewards are available to redeem. People watching the stream may also get pop-ups inviting them to perform the quest once the streamer finishes. The exact graphics will be available after sponsored quests launch.

Discord screen discussing Sponsored Quests

Discord lets users turn off Quests in their current iteration, but that may change once Sponsored Quests officially launch.

Can I turn off sponsored quests?

Yes, for now. Open Discord and navigate to the Privacy & Safety section of the Settings. There, you should see a selection for In-game rewards (aka Quests) . Turn off that setting.

But know that this setting is likely to change when sponsored quests go live.

"Users can opt out of personalized promotions for quests based on activity or data shared with Discord," a representative for Discord said in an email. "Users may still see quests, however, if they navigate to their gift inventory and/or through contextual entry points, like a user's friends' activity. They'll also have the option to hide an in-app promotion for a specific quest or game they're not interested in."

When will Discord launch sponsored quests?

Discord didn't give an exact release date, but it did tell The Wall Street Journal that it would be sometime during the first week of April.

Will I see advertising if I don't stream?

We won't know until the update fully launches. However, it appears that the majority of the advertising will be shown only to people who use Discord's streaming feature. But if you don't stream, you may still see pop-ups, as Discord does advertise events through its notifications.

Gaetano Pesce, a Great Master of Italian Design, Dies at 84

By Valentina Raggi

Gaetano Pesce at Workingallery 2019

Designer Gaetano Pesce has died in New York at the age of 84.

“It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of visionary creator Gaetano Pesce,” read a post on his Instagram page Thursday morning. “Over the course of six decades Gaetano revolutionized the worlds of art, design, architecture and the liminal spaces between these categories. His originality and nerve are matched by none. Despite dealing with health related set backs, especially in the last year, Gaetano remained positive, playful and ever curious. He is survived by his children, family, and all who adored him. His uniqueness, creativity and special message live on through his art.”

In 1962, Pesce made design history with the debut of his UP series for C&B (now B&B Italia). With its playful swells and contours, the provocative work (nicknamed La Mamma for its resemblance to a fertility goddess) pushed the formal limits of polyurethane foam while making no secret of its feminist perspective. “It’s an image of a prisoner,” Pesce told AD . “Women suffer because of the prejudice of men. The chair was supposed to talk about this problem.”

Later, in the ’90s, his “jelly” aesthetics and experiments with resins and polymers matured through his Fish Design project.

Gaetano Pesce

The designer, pictured in Milan in 2011

Born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1939, Pesce was educated at IUAV and participated in the vanguard art collective Gruppo N in Padua. But it was New York City, where the designer began teaching at Pratt in 1980, that would become his home for the past several decades.

Despite the recent health concerns, there was no slowing down for Pesce. In 2022, he debuted a new collection with Cassina and unveiled a rainbow of 400 one-of-a-kind chairs for the set of Bottega Veneta’s spring-summer 2023 runway show (later on view at the label’s Design Miami showcase). This January in Paris, the multidisciplinary designer was presented the 2024 Andrée Putman Lifetime Achievement award, a peer-to-peer honor from the Créateurs Design Awards program.

At the time of his passing, Pesce was preparing two activations for Milan Design Week 2024, commencing on April 15: A series of unreleased works will be on view in “Nice to See You,” a solo exhibition at Biblioteca Ambrosiana, while outdoor installation “L’Uomo Stanco,” presented in collaboration with the City of Milan, will be on display at the Piazza San Pio Xi.

His legacy lives on in the permanent collections of some of the most significant museums around the world, including MoMa and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Pompidou Center and the Louvre in Paris, and the Vitra Museum in Germany.

What is the 'God Bless the USA Bible'? The $60 Bible Trump and Lee Greenwood are selling

youtube ads presentation

Donald Trump is now in the business of selling Bibles, according to an announcement made Tuesday.

Trump announced the partnership with country music singer Lee Greenwood, best known for his song "God Bless the USA". The pair is selling a custom version of the Bible for $59.99, called the " God Bless the USA Bible," which was previously announced in 2021 by Greenwood but then fell to the wayside after hitting snafus with publishing.

"All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many. It's my favorite book," Trump said in a video posted on social media "It's a lot of peoples' favorite book."

"We have to bring Christianity back into our lives and into what will be again a great nation," Trump said. "Our Founding Fathers did a tremendous thing when they built America on Judeo-Christian values. Now that foundation is under attack, perhaps as never before."

The announcement comes as Trump is embroiled in several legal battles, leaving him reportedly strapped for cash. He recently posted a $91 million bond as he appeals a jury award in a defamation case and, on Monday a New York state appeals court ruling imposed an additional $175 million bond while he appeals a civil fraud verdict against him. He will owe another $354 million plus interest if he loses the appeal.

Trump has denied that he is facing financial issues and a disclaimer on the controversial Bible's website claims it "has nothing to do with any political campaign" and is "not owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Ventures LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates."

What exactly is this self-proclaimed patriotic version of the Bible and what does it have to do with a country song from the 1980s? Here's what we know.

What is the 'God Bless the USA Bible'?

The "God Bless the USA Bible" is a version of the Christian Bible "inspired by Lee Greenwood's patriotic anthem 'God Bless the USA,'" according to the official God Bless The USA Bible website.

Touting itself as the "only Bible endorsed by President Trump" and Greenwood himself, it incorporates copies of American political documents and Greenwood's song lyrics into the copy.

A "spotlight" section on the website shows other conservative personalities posing with a copy of the bible, including Tomi Lahren, Donal Trump Jr., Rita Cosby, Travis Tritt and Gov. Mike Huckabee.

According to the website, "high order volume" means customers will have to wait four to six weeks for delivery.

What is in the 'God Bless the USA Bible'?

The "God Bless the USA Bible" is the King James Version translation interspersed with copies of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and handwritten lyrics to the chorus of “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.

According to the Bible's website, it comes in a large print, two-column format.

Who is Lee Greenwood?

Melvin Lee Greenwood is an American  country music  singer-songwriter. He has released more than 20 major-label albums but is best known for his 1984 patriotic song "God Bless the USA."

Greenwood identifies as a conservative Republican and Christian and his song has often been used at Republican political rallies and conventions. It has been used in the campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and more recently, Donald Trump.

President Bush nominated Greenwood to serve on the National Council of Arts, which he did from 2008 to 2022. In 2018, Greenwood was awarded the MMP Music Award and was inducted into the MMP Hall of Fame by Commander Joseph W. Clark.

'God Bless the USA Bible' controversies, response

Constitutional and legal scholars, as well as people in the Christian church, have rebuffed the existence of a Bible that mixes religion and legal doctrine. When the concept was first announced, it received notable backlash.

In 2021, HarperCollins Christian Publishing  refused to manufacture the book after a preliminary agreement, leading Greenwood and Hugh Kirkpatrick, who led the company Elite Service Pro behind the custom Bible, to look elsewhere for publishing.

HarperCollins Christian Publishing, which includes Zondervan and Thomas Nelson publishing groups, is the North American licensor for the New International Version translation of the Bible, which ultimately was not used in the "God Bless the USA" version. Instead, it uses the King James Version translation.

It is now unclear who the publisher and licensor of the new version is. Greenwood's publicist previously told the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY network, that Elite Source Pro is no longer a partner on the project. He was unable to name the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.

Elite hedge funder David Einhorn touted his investment in a Belgian chemicals company, sending the stock surging 18%

  • David Einhorn touted Solvay as a top-five portfolio pick while speaking at the Sohn Conference.
  • The Belgian chemical firm has high returns on capital and stable margins, the hedge fund manager said.
  • Einhorn said the sell-side analysts who hold a negative view on the company are overlooking its main revenue streams.

Insider Today

Value-investing legend David Einhorn has his eyes set on the Belgian firm Solvay, praising its market potential during a Sohn Conference presentation . Speaking later with CNBC, he said it holds a top-five spot in his portfolio.

"Solvay is a commodity chemical company with a relatively high and stable margin, a high return on capital and a good return of capital," Einhorn outlined on Wednesday. He added: "We think this boring essential chemicals business will generate attractive risk-adjusted returns for investors."

The comments sent Solvay's American depository receipts soaring 18% to $3.22 apiece at 2:45 p.m. ET.

In large part, the company focuses on manufacturing soda ash, a common compound used to produce everything from glass, soaps, to lithium batteries. Though soda ash is not a volatile commodity, COVID distortions have pulled down its capacity utilization, with 2024 set to be a trough year, Einhorn said.

Due to Solvay's ties to soda ash, many sell-side analysts have printed mostly negative reviews of the company, he cited. But these reports have largely ignored the fact that 70% of Solvay's revenue streams come from other chemical products, including peroxides, silica and coatis.

"The point I'm making is that while there is a reduction in soda ash prices and profits in 2024, which everyone knows about, the rest of the business is less cyclical and more resilient," he said. "The bears seem intent on completely ignoring that reality."

What's more, the company is investment-grade rated, with modest leverage and high returns on capital, he said.

While consensus expects earnings of 3.62 euros a share this year, Einhorn said that an European economic recovery should keep the price above 4 euros a share in 2024.

"If management executes on its growth and cost targets, normal earnings per share should [rise] to more than €6 per share,"
