This project-based Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree will provide the framework, the focus and the discipline necessary to conduct speculative inquiry in the field of art.

The PhD offers a rigorous, supportive and dynamic environment where the investigation of ideas and material practice pertinent to artistic research informs the production of art. Central to the program is a balance between studio practice and the conceptual and theoretical concerns that underpin artistic research.

You may work with installation, sculpture, ceramics, hybrid and spatial practices, sound, performance, media arts, video, painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, gold-and silversmithing and object based practice.

You will consider the artistic, cultural and social position of your research and draw upon trans-disciplinary practices and enquiries.

You will undertake a major project that culminates in an exhibition, performance or presentation of work for assessment, accompanied by an exegesis that includes visual and sonic documentation of the creative research.

How you will learn

Research at rmit, time spent on research.

Full-time candidates are expected to commit at least four days per week (or at least two days per week for part-time candidates) to their research. The academic year is 48 weeks.

Gsns application guide.

GSNS calls for applications four times a year - please see the deadlines below. You can apply for a PhD position with either your own project description via the general call or for one of the positions on the list of specific calls. GSNS does not charge an application fee. This guide applies to all PhD applicants no matter the type of PhD study structure.

To ensure that your application fulfills all the requirements, please read all the information below carefully before you apply.

Before you apply

General and specific calls, the general call.

Application through the general call means that you apply for a PhD position with your own project description. Before starting the application process, it is strongly recommended that you contact a prospective supervisor in order to discuss a potential project. This may contribute to writing a better and more targeted application. Furthermore, it is a good idea to inquire about possible financing, since the likelihood of securing admission through the general call depends on the available resources of the supervisor and the PhD programme for which you apply.

You can find AU researchers/potential supervisors by  searching on subject headings here . Furthermore, you can find more info on the various PhD programmes at GSNS on each of the programme websites .

The specific call

Application via the specific call means that you apply for one of the PhD positions on the list of specific calls . Please note that the list is regularly updated and will be complete approximately two weeks before the application deadline. If you can’t find a project within your field of research on the list, please have a look later or apply via the general call.

You can apply for various projects within an application round, but please note that GSNS only evaluates one application per applicant per specific project. If you submit more than one application for the same project, GSNS reserves the right to evaluate only the latest application received.

Application deadlines and start dates

There are four PhD application deadlines each year, and the application system opens two months before each deadline. You can apply for a PhD position under the open call via the general call or the specific call. The deadlines are the same no matter which type of call you apply for:

NB:  Application deadlines are at 23:59 PM (midnight) CET/CEST.

* The start date depends on various factors, e.g. final enrollment requirements/details, getting a study- and residence permit (international students), etc.

Start date if you are a non-Danish applicant

GSNS must receive your application for a PhD position at least three months (for EU citizens) or four months (for international citizens) prior to the preferred start date. For example, if you want to start in the period 1 August – 1 October, GSNS must receive your application no later than the May call (deadline 1 May). You can also choose to apply for one the previous calls i.e. February or November.

Application process for applicants without a MSc degree

You are welcome to apply for a PhD position before you obtain your Master’s degree. This will enable you to be evaluated and accepted in good time, so you can start your PhD study straight after your Master’s graduation. In this case, you must upload your Bachelor’s transcripts and diploma, as well as your Master’s transcripts to the application. Once you obtain your Master's diploma, you must send it to GSNS as soon as possible (regardless of whether it is before or after the assessment process).

Please note that you have the option of applying for enrolment based on your Bachelor’s degree with or without credits. You can read more about this on the “ PhD study structure and income ” page.

Assessment criteria

The GSNS admission committee evaluates all the various elements in each application, but some elements in your application will have more weight than others. Only documents received prior to the application deadline will be evaluated. Thus, documents sent after deadline will not be taken into account.

The main criteria used in evaluating incoming applicants are their documented qualifications (composition of previous course programme, grades, publications, motivation, study periods abroad, duration of study, recommendations, etc.).

Regarding grade point average: GSNS does not have a fixed requirement for a minimum level of the grade point average. However, you can use the grade point average requirements from the Industrial PhD scheme  (page 3-4) as a guideline for the approximate minimum level for PhD admission. Secondary criteria are the scientific quality of the prepared research project for the PhD degree programme and the suitability of the research environment for such a project. Additional aspects that can be taken into consideration include previous activities outside the university, plans for mobility during the PhD study period, plans for collaboration with external partners, plans for dissemination activities, etc.

When assessing applicants with a Master’s degree, more weight is placed on the secondary criteria and additional aspects than for applicants without a Master’s degree.

Freedom of research

Aarhus University is committed to protecting the rights of PhD students and ensuring optimal conditions throughout the entire PhD study. For Aarhus University, it is crucial that PhD students have the freedom to conduct research without fear of economic sanctions or reprisals. This is essential for PhD students to develop their academic independence and skills and contribute to new knowledge in their research area, as described in the basic principles of PhD education at Aarhus University .

GSNS does therefore not accept third-party contracts (for example in connection to international scholarships) that limit the freedom or mobility of PhD students during and after the PhD study at GSNS. PhD students who are not employed by Aarhus University are required to sign a document stating that no such third-party contracts exist.

Erroneous or misleading information may result in rejection of an application for a PhD study or termination of the PhD study.

Prospective supervisor, financing and tuition

Prospective supervisor.

It is strongly recommended that a prospective supervisor is contacted before applying via an general call in order to discuss a potential project and inquire about possible financing. The likelihood of securing admission through the general call depends on the available resources of the supervisor and PhD programme for which the student applies.

To learn more about our PhD programmes and to find a researcher to contact about possible supervision, please visit the  programme website  or  search for a researcher by subject here.

Financing and tuition

Admission to a PhD programme of study is contingent upon financing. Financing can come from a variety of sources such as public or private research foundations, private companies, EU programmes, etc. These types of funding are often secured through the PhD supervisor. Some international PhD students receive financing from their home country, and some PhD students are employed in private companies, most often as part of the  Industrial PhD programme . Note that GSNS requires PhD students without employment at Aarhus University to demonstrate a minimum monthly income corresponding to two PhD SU scholarships (One PhD SU scholarship equals DKK 6.820 per month (2024-level, before tax).

If a student is admitted, it is the responsibility of Aarhus University to ensure that a complete financing plan is in place for the PhD student in connection with admission. The plan covers all expenses for the PhD programme: Scholarship/fellowship, tuition fee, running costs, incl. expenses for mobility plans, etc.

All accepted PhD students must pay tuition (DKK 80,000 per year). In most cases, tuition is covered by the PhD financing plan. However, if the PhD student is self-financed, for example via international grants or private funding, the PhD student must secure the tuition fee him- or herself. Failing to pay tuition in due time will result in termination of enrolment in the PhD programme.

AU 2024 Call for Proposals: Tips from Award-Winning AU Speakers

au arts phd open call

We’re halfway through Call for Proposals for AU 2024 (it closes April 30) and the submissions continue to roll in. On the Call for Proposals page, you’ll find links to the Call for Proposal Guide, the Proposal Worksheet, and sample proposals to help you craft the best proposal.

Looking for more guidance? We asked award-winning AU speakers from previous years what advice they’d have for people working on a proposal—whether it’s their first, fourth, or their fourteenth. Whether you’re new to the AU community or a seasoned speaker with a dozen badges on the wall, here are some great tips to keep in mind. And remember that you can edit your proposal up until the end of the Call for Proposals period.

Read the CFP Guide

“Selecting the right class format is extremely important. Please read the CFP Guide to understand the difference between various class formats, especially the case study and the industry talk. That should be the first step before you even start putting any ideas down.” –Deepak Maini, Principal Business Consultant, Autodesk

“Stay current with the AU trends for topics, presentation formats, and most importantly, technology.” –Ravi Ray Wood, BIM Manager, Samsung Semiconductors

Choosing a topic

“Pick a subject that you are really passionate about and don't be afraid to show your passion in your proposal. Just because its technical doesn't mean it can't be fun.” –Shir Rustici, Global Product Manager, Symetri

“Know your audience. Who are they and what do they want to know? Design and write your proposal with that audience in mind.” –Lydia Cline, Drafting Professor, Johnson County Community College

“If you're trying to find your topic, pay attention to what your clients frequently ask or where your colleagues struggle. Rest assured that many others will likely be grappling with the same challenges, guaranteeing that your presentation will attract a significant audience.” –Nick Chanakoulas, Head of Customer Success, Plex-Earth

“Pick a topic that you are passionate about and know the workflow very well. One that has helped you solve a problem and you would like to share with everyone. Knowing the subject well will allow you to create a quality document and feel more comfortable delivering to a group of people.” –Todd Schmoock, Senior Application Specialist, Applied Software

“For technical presentations, pick a topic that can be narrowed enough to fit into 45 minutes to one hour of speaking. Keeping the topic narrow lets you go into greater specifics and details.” –Stephen Gabriel, Design Technology Specialist, Team D3

“Be unique! Choose a topic to propose that is new, fresh, fun, and uncommon to the past several years of AU presentations. Make the topic relevant to today, impactful for tomorrow, and thought-provoking for time to come.” –Dustin Ridley, Regional VDC Manager, DPR Construction

“Check out the sessions from previous Autodesk Universities, you can get motivation and ideas that you can add to from the sessions that have been presented.” –Prateek Chitnis, Strategic Implementation Manager, Symetri USA

Choosing a Title

“A catchy title is important—but make sure it is clear for the topic. Successful presentations are determined by how well you can connect to your audience. If the wrong audience attends, the presentation will not go well no matter how good your content is.” –Andrew Pangallo, Construction Digital Delivery Lead Engineer, Indiana Department of Transportation

“Selecting a title that includes keywords relevant to the subject of your presentation will enhance discoverability and attract the intended audience. By considering the interests and needs of your target audience, you can ensure that your talk is easily searchable and accessible to those seeking information on the topic.” –Natasha Renwick, Group Document Controller, Mercury

“For the title, try to take a keyword approach. Keep in mind that when people search for a class, they will probably use keywords related to their topics of interest, so your titles should not be abstract. They should catch people's attention instantly and describe your presentation clearly. Don't rely on the class description to explain your topic, as they usually are read only after a title seems interesting.” –Nick Chanakoulas, Head of Customer Success, Plex-Earth

Class descriptions

“The description is the most critical part of your proposal. Make sure it clearly captures the essence of what you want to present. It is important to use the Proposal Worksheet from the CFP page to ensure you stay within the word limit.” – Deepak Maini, Principal Business Consultant, Autodesk

“In your description, don't just state what they are going to learn, tell them what they are going to be able to do with it when they return. They need something to do when they get back to the office.” –Irvin Hayes, Senior Product Manager, Autodesk

“Mention ROI. Audience members are likely interested in procuring new tools and technology. Mentioning ROI in detail may connect with many.” –Andrew Pangallo, Construction Digital Delivery Lead Engineer, Indiana Department of Transportation

“Proofread and edit! Before submitting your proposal, carefully proofread it for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors (try Grammarly). Also, ensure that the structure and flow of your abstract are logical and coherent. I usually get at least three people to proofread mine before I submit.” –Thesla Collier, Design Technology Manager, HNTB

Learning objectives

“Dedicate time to develop robust learning objectives, as these are very important in addition to class descriptions. Learning objectives are crucial components and serve as a roadmap for you and attendees.” –Argelia Barcena, Regional Design Technology Manager, Gensler

“Provide evidence of impact: Demonstrate the relevance of your presentation to the audience. Explain why your topic matters and how it contributes to the field.” –Thesla Collier, Design Technology Manager, HNTB

Final thoughts

“Quality is better than quantity. It is better to submit one or two proposals that are well thought out and well written then try to submit 20 proposals that have little substance.” –Shir Rustici, Global Product Manager, Symetri

“Remember, every perspective adds value. When preparing your proposal, bring experiences and insights from your coworkers and external partners (clients, sub-contractors, account executives, etc.). This helps you showcase how your topic impacted the industry as a whole.” –Ariel Castillo, Innovation Director, Miller-Davis Company

“’It is better to aim high and miss than to aim low and hit.’ - Les Brown! Go ahead and submit your idea, take a shot! Don't worry if it will be selected or not, you must try it and if you fail you will have learned a lesson and you can try again.” –Prateek Chitnis, Strategic Implementation Manager, Symetri USA

Remember— Call for Proposals ends on April 30, and you can edit your proposals up until that time, so don’t hit “submit” till you know it’s ready.  We can’t wait to see what you’re working on!
