(a) The same kind of plants grown and cultivated on a large scale at a place is called the  crop .

(b) The first step before growing crops is the  preparation of the soil.

(c) Damaged seeds would float on top of the water.

(d) For growing a crop, sufficient sunlight and water and nutrients from the soil are essential.

2. Match items in column A with those in column B.

3. Give two examples of each.

(a) Kharif crop

(b) Rabi crop

Kharif crops – Paddy and maize

Rabi crops – Wheat and pea

4. Write a paragraph in your own words on each of the following.

(a) Preparation of soil

(c) Weeding

(d) Threshing

a) Preparation of the soil is the first step in agriculture. Preparation of the soil is done to loosen the soil, which is essential for root penetration into the soil. This allows the roots to breathe easily. Loosening of the soil allows the growth of earthworms and microorganisms, which will help to keep the soil fertile by adding humus to the soil. Loosening of soil also brings nutrient-rich soil to the top layer, which is essential for the growth of plants.

b) Sowing is an important process in crop production. First, healthy seeds are selected before sowing. After selecting healthy seeds, sowing is done by either traditional methods or by using the equipment’s seed drill.

c) Removal of unnecessary plants from the field is called weeding. Weeds compete with crop plants for nutrients and water. This will reduce the yield of the desired crops. Weeds also interfere while harvesting and get mixed with crops. Some weeds are poisonous to animals and humans. Tilling is a common method that helps remove weeds before sowing crops, and manual methods like the physical removal of plants are also used to remove weeds. Weedicides are sprayed to get rid of weeds, but this method may affect the health of farmers because of the chemicals used as weedicides.

d) Process of separating the chaff from the crop is known as threshing. Threshing is carried by a machine called ‘combine’, which is a harvester as well as a thresher. Threshing is also done by winnowing, where the blow of air is used to separate the chaff from crops.

5. Explain how fertilisers are different from manure.

6. What is irrigation? Describe two methods of irrigation which conserve water.

The supply of water to crops at regular intervals is called irrigation. Methods of irrigation which conserve water are as follows:

a) Drip Irrigation: Here, the water goes drop by drop directly into the roots; this method is very useful as it conserves the water and also helps in avoiding weeds.

b) Sprinkler system: This method is in use mainly in uneven land where sufficient water is not available. The perpendicular pipes, having rotating nozzles on top, are joined to the main pipeline at regular intervals. When water is allowed to flow through the main pipe under pressure with the help of a pump, it escapes from the rotating nozzles. It gets sprinkled on the crop as if it is raining.

7. If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen? Discuss.

Wheat crops may get destroyed if sown in the Kharif season because of unfavourable temperatures, pests and adaptable conditions for the plants to grow. Kharif comes during the rainy season; hence it is not a wise idea to grow wheat in the Kharif season.

8. Explain how soil gets affected by the continuous plantation of crops in a field.

Plants require nutrients for their growth. Without optimum nutrients, plants will die. Continuous plantation of crops results in the depletion of certain nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, etc. This results in a decrease in yield due to loss of nutrients; hence there should be a gap between crops in order to get a good yield.

9. What are weeds? How can we control them?

In a field, many other undesirable plants may grow naturally along with the crop. These undesirable plants are called weeds. Weeds can be controlled by methods called weeding. Tilling before sowing the crops helps in uprooting and killing weeds, which may then dry up and get mixed with the soil. Weeds are also controlled by using certain chemicals called weedicides.

10. Arrange the following boxes in proper order to make a flow chart of sugarcane crop production.

Answer: The supply of water to crops at different intervals is called irrigation. The two methods of irrigation which conserve water are as follows:

Sprinkler System: This system is more useful on uneven land, having fewer water supplies. In this method, water is supplied using pipes to one or more central locations within the field. When water is allowed to flow under high pressure with the help of a pump, it gets sprinkled on the crops.

Drip system: This irrigation system has an arrangement of pipes or tubes with very small holes in them to water plants drop by drop just at the base of the root. It is very efficient as water is not wasted at all.

Question 7: If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen? Discuss.

Answer: Wheat crops may get destroyed if sown in Kharif season because of unfavourable temperature, pests and adaptable conditions for the plants to grow. Kharif come during the rainy season, hence it is not a wise idea to grow wheat in Kharif season.

Question 8: Explain how soil gets affected by the continuous plantation of crops in a field.

Answer: Continuous plantation of crops in a field makes the soil poor in certain nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc. Plants require nutrients for their proper growth and functioning. When a farmer continues to grow crops one after the other, then all nutrients available in the soil reduce and the crop yield decreases automatically.

Question 9: What are weeds? How can we control them?

Answer: The undesirable plants may grow naturally along with the crop are called weeds. There are many ways to remove weeds and control their growth. Weeds can be removed by uprooting or cutting them close to the ground, from time to time. This is done with the help of a khurpi. Weeds are also controlled by using certain chemicals, called weedicides, like 2, 4–D. These are sprayed in the fields to kill the weeds.

Question 4.

Write a paragraph in your own words on each of the following.

(a) Preparation of soil (b) Sowing (c) Weeding (d)Threshing

(a) Preparation of soil—

The first step in the agriculture and growing of crops is the preparation of soil. Preparation of soil involves the turning and loosening of the soil allowing better penetration of the roots into the soil, adding humus to the soil and improving fertility of soil. This combined process of loosening and turning of the soil is called tilling or ploughing.

(b) Sowing—

Sowing of the seeds is a process in which the seeds are placed in the soil and are allowed to germinate over a period of time under stable conditions. While sowing, seeds of high-quality are chosen very carefully to promote better yield of crop. Sowing of the seeds can be done by hand or with the help of a seed-drill.

(c) Weeding—

Weeds are unwanted, valueless plants growing wildly amidst the other useful crops. The process of removal of such unwanted plants is known as weeding.Weeding is usually done during the early stages of crop cultivation to promote better growth of the crops. Weeding has many advantages such as improving fertility of soil and obtaining a better yield.

(d) Threshing —

After 3 or 4 months of hard-work of the farmers comes the season of harvesting. In this season of harvesting, the crops are either pulled out or are cut down carefully to collect the yield. Threshing is the process of separation of the grains from the plant. This process can be carried out by hand and by use of animals or machines.

Question 5.

Explain how fertilizers are different from manures?

There are several differences between fertilizers and manures which can be stated as follows-

Fertilizers

  • These are made up of inorganic or synthetic materials/salts.
  • They typically contain Nitrogen, Phosphorous and potassium along with other minerals in combined forms.
  • They are easily absorbed by the plants
  • Does not add any humus to the soil.
  • These mostly contain animal faeces, compost etc. and other organic matter obtained by decomposition.
  • These are not very rich in plant nutrients compared to the fertilizers.
  • They are slowly absorbed by the plants.
  • They provide a lot of humus to the soil.

Question 6.

What is irrigation? Describe two methods of irrigation which conserve water.

Irrigation is the process of supplying water to the crops or the plants in an artificial manner according to the crop requirement at necessary intervals of time.

Two methods of irrigation which conserve water are –

  • Drip irrigation – In this method of irrigation, the water is supplied directly to the roots of the plants by means of tubes/pipes running underground in the soil.
  • Sprinkler irrigation- In this method of irrigation, water is sprinkled over from a central region to the crops on uneven lands.

Question 7 .

If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen? Discuss .

If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, the plants would get wilted and the entire crop may be destroyed. If wheat is supplied with too much water due to rainfall, it would lead to wilting of plants followed by water-clogging in the fields. Also, it needs mediocre amount of sunlight and a comparatively cooler climate, both of which are not available in the Kharif season. Thus, the quality of the harvest produced would be very poor and unsatisfactory if sown in the Kharif season.

Question 8.

Explain how soil gets affected by the continuous plantation of crops in a field.

Continuous plantation of crops results in lack of nutrients in the soil such as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorous. As a result of the lack of these nutrients, the farmers have to add fertilisers and manures for the soil to remain rich in the requisite minerals. If the plant is leguminous, it can replenish itself of nitrogen by nitrogen fixation. Crop rotation and occasional manuring can help diminish this problem.

Question 9 .

What are weeds? How can we control them?

Weeds are the unwanted, valueless plants which grow around the main crop and hinder their growth by competing with them for sunlight, water and absorption of nutrients.

Weeds can be controlled by the process of weeding.Weeding can be done manually by hand which involves the killing of the weeds by uprooting or cutting them or by chemical weedicides.

Question 10 .

Arrange the following boxes in proper order to make a flow chart of sugarcane crop production.

ques 10

The following sequence is the proper order from top to bottom for sugarcane crop production-

  • Preparation of soil.
  • Ploughing the field.
  • Sending crop to sugar factory

Tips To Score Well in Class 8 Science Exam Paper

Science is one of the most important subjects during school studies. Moreover, the subject finds its application in various fields of studies and is one of the most opted streams of higher education. Hence, it is imperative for students to pay attention to Science concepts from a young age. Following are some of the tips to perform well in the Class 8 Science CBSE exam:

Follow a Systematic Study Plan : In order to score well in any paper, it is important to have a study routine devised in a way that allows time for revision and focusing on chapters you are weak at.

Refer NCERT Solution: For those who are finding it difficult to solve the NCERT textbook problems themselves can refer to NCERT Solutions and get all their doubts cleared. NCERT Solution helps them to write the answer without clearly explaining the concepts without making any mistakes.

Revise Thoroughly: Students should never underestimate the importance of having a thorough revision of the chapters to achieve good grades in exams

Take Proper Rest and Indulge in Recreational Activities: Along with studies, it is important to have time for proper rest and leisure activities. Do not overburden yourself with studies as it would unnecessarily increase your exam stress.

Make aLlist of the Most Important Topics in the Syllabus: The first and most simple tip that will benefit you the most is to make a list of all the important concepts and formulas for rapid reference and review. By listing the chapters, you will not miss any key topics and will be able to simply revise each subtopic and subject. You may also recollect concepts just by looking at the list and will be able to retain everything learnt on the day of the Science exam.

Clear all Doubts as Soon as Possible: Another crucial tip while preparing for the Class 8 Science exam is to seek clarification on doubtful topics from your teacher as soon as feasible. Hesitating to express your uncertainty will just add to your perplexity and lead to a loss of confidence.

NCERT Textbooks Must be Studied Extensively: Concentrate on the NCERT curriculum, as it has the most up-to-date solved examples. Prepare all of the NCERT questions and examples to ace the CBSE Class 8 Science examination.

Previous Year Question Papers: Solve as many previous year question papers as you can as this will help you figure out which questions have been asked how many times, as well as the marks assigned to each question. It also provides you with an indication of how long your answer should be from an examination viewpoint. Solving papers also helps you understand the various ways the same question has been asked in the exam and how to respond to it.

Try to Write More: Thoroughly read the syllabus topics, but be sure you can write what you read. Writing, rather than just reading, has been shown to aid in the retention of any concept for a longer period of time. Writing provides practice and helps to write better and well-structured answers in the exam. It also helps you understand your writing pace and modify it accordingly during the examination.

Time Management: Effective time management will assist students in completing their exam papers on time, eliminating last-minute worry and tension. Students can do this by creating a timetable that helps in allocating adequate time to each topic.

Start Preparing as Soon as Feasible: The earlier you start preparing for the Science exam, the sooner you will be able to complete the syllabus. This will allow you to revise the syllabus multiple times and leave enough time for you to improve on tougher topics from the syllabus. Aim to complete the syllabus at least 3 months before the day of the final exam to get adequate revision and practice time.

Always Make an Effort to Establish a Learning Environment Around You: The atmosphere you build before your final examinations will play an essential role in Science exam preparation. As a class 8 student, you must strive to provide yourself with a comfortable, peaceful, and distraction-free atmosphere.

Study in Chunks: Divide the entire syllabus into difficult, moderately difficult and easy portions. Simplify your preparation as much as possible by further dividing a chapter into subtopics sub-sub-topics. Attempt to incorporate small pauses when studying for a long period of time. Never let anything stand in the way of you enjoying your favourite activities and hobbies.

Try to Study When Your Attention is at its Peak: If you are a morning person, prepare your tough portion of the syllabus before noon, and if you are a night person, plan your study hours accordingly. Based on your unique strengths and weaknesses, study at a time when you are the most productive and least susceptible to distractions.

Attempt to Make the Most of Every Opportunity: When studying for your examinations, try to arrange small breaks into your timetable. Use the free time to catch up on missed reading or to concentrate on Science problems. Always remember to make the most of each and every opportunity to ace the Science exam.

Study Systematically: Many students have the habit of going right into answering the exercises without first reading the theoretical section of the chapter from the NCERT. You won't have a clear comprehension of the subject until you read the theory. If you want to solve all the questions correctly, make the habit of studying the topics first and then move on to the back exercises.

Use Mnemonics, Flowcharts and Flashcards: It is scientifically proven that the use of handmade mnemonics, flashcards and flowcharts will help you to memorise and retain even the toughest topics of the Science syllabus for long. It will also help you revise the syllabus quickly and easily.

Don't Ignore the Diagrams: Diagrams given in the Science syllabus must be practised well before appearing in the Science exam. Several questions require you to draw diagrams, thus, don't ignore the diagrams and practice them regularly. Use a pencil to draw the diagrams and label them appropriately in legible handwriting.

Study Wisely: If you've already mastered a topic, just writing key definitions 10 to 15 times is a waste of time. Instead, you might utilise that time to study new topics. Study wisely and know what kind of questions are most likely to be asked in the Science exam by analysing the previous year papers. First, complete the most important topics from an examination point of view and then move on to the least important topics.
