.css-14f5ked{margin:0;word-break:break-word;display:-webkit-box;-webkit-box-orient:vertical;box-orient:vertical;-webkit-line-clamp:2;overflow:hidden;} dr. johnny fain of assignment international ministries interview with dr. chris crain.

In this episode of Undivided Birmingham, Dr. Johnny Fain, shares about prayer and the story behind Assignment International Ministries.

The story of AIM is one that started back in June of 1978, when Johnny and Debbie were married and shortly after became the pastor of a small church over 3 hours from their home in Ft Worth ,Tx.

From that starting point, 41 years later, they found themselves in the crossroads of “What is next, Lord?” With this prayer being offered up to the Father in Heaven, they found themselves receiving the answer while visiting in the home of Glenn and Jackie Sheppard on a small sheep farm in Kansas City, Mo.

Being “learners” of revival and prayer movements, they journeyed to K.C. to visit a prayer meeting that had been going on for over 17 years, at a site called The International House of Prayer.  Little did they know that the Lord would speak a word of direction to them, not at the prayer meeting, but out by a sheep pen.

Early Wednesday morning of that week, Johnny went out to pray and learn the lessons of the sheep. Of course, when you are learning about sheep, you must read Psalm 23. After reading this Psalm, the Lord lead Johnny to read Psalm 24. The purpose was to know that the Lord was his Shepherd and his King!  Following the 24th, the Lord said to read Psalm 25 with the question, “Being that the Lord is my Shepherd King,  what is my response to Him?”  I will trust You, God.  Show me Your ways.  Teach me Your paths.  Lead me into truth for I trust in You.

Johnny began to pray these things and the Lord spoke very clearly, “It is time to leave the pastorate.”  He replied, “Lord,  you’re  going to have to speak this to Debbie.” The Lord said that was not a problem!  With no word of this spoken to Debbie, she began writing what the Lord was saying to her during her Bible study and prayer time.  The words were clear.  They had finished the work in the pastorate and it was time for something new.  Debbie came from her time with the Lord and shared with Johnny the word given to her. It was the same as Johnny had received!

They knew something new was coming but did not know what it was to be.

The word “assignment”, kept coming up and gradually the Lord revealed His plans to form Assignment International Ministries or AIM.

Not What I Signed Up For!

assignment international ministries

There are times in our lives when various things happen that don’t appear to be our original assignment from the Lord.  We’ve said, “Yes!” to Jesus and His call on our lives but the movie being played out in front of us does not look like the picture we had originally agreed to.  So, we chalk it up to spiritual warfare or stubborn people acting in the flesh, etc.  We usually become very frustrated and begin wondering what in the world is going on.

Paul was tested in this way many times.  The ministerial journey he shares in  2nd Corinthians 11: 24-27 isn’t a pretty picture at all.  He says,

“From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.  Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, . . . . in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in cold and nakedness.”

More than likely, you and I haven’t been through the same struggles Paul encountered!  Nevertheless, our journey feels just as real and challenging to us personally.  To keep the right perspective, we must remember the Lord’s promises to us from His Word and our commitment to Him.

*GOD WILL DIRECT IF WE TRUST

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Prov. 3:5-6

*GOD WILL STRENGTHEN IF WE WAIT

“Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart;

Wait, I say on the Lord!” Psalm 27:14

GOD WILL GIVE US REST IF WE COME

“Jesus said, ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30

Could it be that God is involved in the delay of our unanswered prayers?  He seems so far away when the answer to a prayer is delayed or a definite, “No.”

He is sovereign for sure.  Nothing with Him is wasted.

This lesson became so clear to me when I moved my parents to Dothan in 2008, following my mother’s second stroke.  She began rehab at Extendicare.  After several weeks, the fabulous physical therapists and her doctor determined that she would not be able to walk and would need total care.  After Dr. Morriss talked with my dad, it was decided that she would transfer to the long term care section of Extendicare.  We had all prayed that she would improve and be able to live at home with my dad.  Why hadn’t God allowed her to be able to walk and be independent?  We finally stopped asking “Why?” And began asking, “How?”  How could God use this for His glory?  My mother always taught me, “The best place to be is  in the center of God’s will.”  She also reminded me of the promise in

Romans 8:28,  “All things work together for the good of those who love Him, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

For the next 9 years, my mom encouraged, prayed for and ministered to employees and visitors coming in and out of her room. My dad was there everyday, singing songs and encouraging the staff.  As a result, one employee came to know Christ and others grew in their walk with the Lord.  Whereas God used Paul the last few years of his life in a prison to share Christ, He used my mom at Extendicare to further His kingdom’s work.

What difficulty are you walking through right now?  Can God be honored and glorified even in the midst of your hardship?  Stop asking “Why?” And start asking “How?”  How can He use this for His glory?  He will open your eyes and give you a new perspective, which will lead to a new attitude of gratitude!

Let’s “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Hebrews 12:1-2

Big changes are coming…but what exactly are those changes?

It’s hard to believe that in just over two months our family will find ourselves relocated back in the US for our one-year home assignment, and while that doesn’t bring a lot of changes for all of you, it does mean a move across the world for us! We’ve heard a lot of questions coming in from friends and supporters, and this is a great time to answer some of those.

  • What is “home assignment”?  Home assignment, more properly termed “US/Puerto Rico Assignment,” is the time when missionaries temporarily come off the field and head back to their passport country. During this time, they  attend special conferences  for missionaries, help International Ministries with  work stateside  (such as the Biennial Convention and Hear the Call Retreats),  enjoy some rest and time with family , and most importantly,  visit the wonderful churches and individuals  who have been so faithful in supporting them – as well as  seeking new friends  with whom to partner on our mission journey.
  • Are you moving back to the US for good?  At this time, we still strongly feel God’s call to minister with the Karen people in Thailand. This home assignment will last for one year, and  our plan is to return to Thailand at the end of May 2020 , as long as we can build and maintain the support needed.
  • Where will you live?  Well, that is a really good question… and one  we wish we had the answer  to! We know that God has the answer, and  we are trusting Him to reveal it  in His time. We feel pretty strongly that our children need to feel as “at home” as possible during this tough time of transition. Since we lived in Indiana for 15 years before moving overseas – and Indiana is where the majority of our supporters reside –  we are currently looking to move back to Indiana  for our home assignment time.
  • When are you coming back to the US?  Debby and Julia will be returning to the US mid-April in order to try and secure housing and make final plans for the family. Kyle, Brennan, and Emma will follow at the beginning of May.
  • If you’ll be in the US, do you still need our support?  YES!  In fact, we need your support  more than ever , because it is more expensive to live in the US than it is to live in Thailand. Plus, our time in the US is not a vacation (although we will have some vacation time during the year, like most families do!) –  we are still working, employed by IM,  and we will in fact be quite busy during the year! We are thankful for all of our partners, and we are actively seeking to form new partnerships. If you’d like to become a part of God’s work in Thailand by making a gift to IM on our behalf, you can do so by clicking the GIVE button above.
  • What will you be doing during this year in the US?  Oh my, where to begin… the majority of our time will be spent  visiting churches and individuals who have been so faithful in supporting us , and we look forward to those joyful reunions. We will also be  seeking new churches and individuals to start new partnerships  with us. But in addition to that, there are some special things happening. We will be  attending the Biennial Mission Summit in Virginia Beach in June. You can attend, too, by registering here.  We will join other missionaries in leadership roles and in providing information about our ministry. We will also be  partnering with Campbellsville University in Kentucky as visiting missionaries . Campbellsville began a new partnership with American Baptist Churches a few years ago, and we are excited to join them in their promotion of missions on their campus at various events throughout the school year.
  • How can we pray for you?  Pray that we will clearly see  God’s direction in where we are supposed to live  and will be able to  secure the housing we need  upon return to the US. And please  pray for our family  (both the children and the adults!) as we make this transition. A full year in the US is quite different than a visit of a few weeks. We will be leaving our ministry, our church, and friends that we love for a full year. Even though we are headed to see family, friends, and other people who are very important to us, we have to admit that there are things that have the potential to worry us: will we forget how to speak Thai? Will our friends here move away while we are gone? (we already know that some of them will not be here when we return) Will our dog and cat be ok? And in the meantime, there is still a lot of work to do to make everything happen!

So that’s what we’re talking about when we say “home assignment.” We’re looking forward to seeing so many of you during that time. Be sure to have your church contact us to schedule a time for us to visit!

Have a question we didn’t answer? Just ask! We encourage you to keep in touch with us – we love to hear from you, whether by email (you can respond directly to this post using the CONTACT US button below, or email us at [email protected]) or by Facebook message at  The Witmers in Thailand . Thanks so much for your prayers and support. The love of the Lord Jesus be with you all.

Our Process

Has your local church affirmed your gifting and readiness for long-term ministry?

The application & onboarding process.

There are a few boxes to check before you’re ready to launch into your first international assignment. The entire process typically takes 12 to 18 months. Find out what to expect during that time frame.

From Application to Appointment

Start with a conversation with a Mobilizer who will help you understand whether Reaching & Teaching is a good fit for you.

Throughout the process, we will connect with your sending church to hear their assessment of your desire and gifting for the field.

A Mobilizer will give you a link to our application which includes your personal testimony and references.

Once we have your application, our team will contact you to set up an initial interview so we can learn more about you.

We will provide you with Theological and Confidential Questionnaires that you will complete and submit for review.

Our team will process your application and questionnaires, interact with you, your elders, and your references, and will determine what additional steps, if any, might need to be taken to prepare you for the field.

Once the evaluation process is complete and any additional steps have been taken, we will set up another interview with you and a few members of our Global Leadership Team.

The final step prior to appointment is an interview with our President.

Once our president approves your application and interview process, he will submit your profile to our Board of Directors for appointment.

From Appointment to the Field

Our Operations and Long-term team will walk with you to ensure you and your sending church are prepared and ready for you to deploy to your assignment.

Attend a two-day bootcamp to learn how to build a robust team of support partners. We provide ongoing coaching and resources to ensure that you are well-supported before you ever go on assignment. All global workers are required to raise 100% of their support prior to leaving.

Complete the week-long, cross-cultural training and orientation program hosted by our team.

Once you’ve raised all of your financial support and have gotten the approval from your Regional Leader, you are ready to purchase your flights deploy to your new home!

Frequently Asked Questions

In what countries do reaching & teaching’s global workers serve.

Our Global Workers are not restricted to any particular country or region. We are now deploying Global Workers across the globe. For security reasons, we cannot list all the countries in which we serve; however, we are excited about the opportunities God has provided from South America to South Asia.

What does a Reaching & Teaching Global Worker do?

Reaching & Teaching Global Workers are committed to the tasks of making mature disciples, establishing healthy churches, and training local leaders. Depending on the context of where the Global Worker is serving, they will be engaged in a range of activities from evangelism, discipleship, church-planting, church strengthening, and leadership development.  All of this work is done with the aim of healthy churches in every place around the world.

Would I raise my own support?

Yes. Global Workers raise the finances necessary for their life and ministry on the field. We provide ongoing organizational support to our missionaries from the time of initial support-raising, through language training, and while on the mission field.

The amount of money that our Global Workers raise depends heavily upon their ministry location and the size of their family. Missionaries should expect to raise at least $60,000 for annual salary and an additional $60,000-90,000 for one-time deployment and training costs.

What happens if I lose support while on the field?

We require that Global Workers raise a 2-3 month surplus to avoid debilitating funding situations. However, if funds dip below 85%, we will require the Global Worker to return to North America to reignite support efforts. We encourage all of our Global Workers to maintain excellent, helpful communication with their support partners.

Who handles logistics?

Our Global Workers are responsible to handle their own housing, medical, education, and transportation logistics. We are happy to provide counsel and help wherever possible, such as providing travel logistical support. Concerning financial logistics, Reaching & Teaching contracts with Cedarstone Partners to handle HR matters, payroll, ministry expense reimbursements, donor receipts, and more.

How often would I come back to the states?

Our Global Workers typically take a stateside assignment every three to four years. We ask that all Global Workers remain on the field during the first year of language acquisition.

Do you provide medical, dental, or retirement benefits?

RTIM offers an optional group health plan option and optional retirement benefit to full-time employees.  Each employee is responsible to raise sufficient funds to opt-in to these benefits.

What does Reaching & Teaching offer in terms of Member Care?

Reaching & Teaching has a dedicated Member Care staff who provide spiritual care for RTIM Global Workers and children as part of the Long-term Ministry Team. The primary tasks of member care are to listen, pray, and provide biblical counsel and encouragement as a supplement to the care provided by the sending church. Each long-term worker is assigned a member care staff early in the on boarding process who will provide care for the duration of their on-boarding and deployment.

What is Reaching & Teaching's position on Global Worker candidates and pornography?
