Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Creative Writing (Fiction) - Department of English

The English Department at Case Western Reserve University seeks an assistant professor of creative writing (fiction). Qualified candidates will have published one book of fiction or have a substantial record of publication in fiction. Responsibilities include teaching  beginning and advanced undergraduate fiction workshops and graduate seminars, directing undergraduate senior projects in fiction  writing and graduate creative writing theses, and teaching undergraduate and graduate literature courses. We seek a colleague who champions an inclusive, diverse, and transformative university and who is excited to join our energetic and collegial department. 

Responsibilities & Duties: Teaching load is two courses a semester. Other responsibilities include active creative writing publication; and service at the departmental, college, and university levels.

About Case Western Reserve and the English Department: CWRU is an independent research university located in  Cleveland's University Circle , a square mile urban district of cultural, medical, educational, religious, and social service institutions. We enroll over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate/professional students in both liberal arts and professional/technical disciplines. The English department includes undergraduate and graduate offerings in literature, creative writing, and rhetoric that complement our undergraduate offerings in film, linguistics, and journalism. It also includes the Writing Program, which oversees the university's first-year academic writing curriculum and includes a substantial Writing Resource Center that serves all CWRU writers, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The department is also home to Writers House, a gathering place for writers that supports community programming, craft workshops, and the New Gutenberg Annex, which is a moveable type print lab and book arts workshop.

Assistant Professor of English - Creative Writing (Tenure-Track)

Millikin University’s English Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of creative writing to teach courses for our English major and innovative general education writing program, beginning August 2024. 

Candidates will teach four English courses per semester. The teaching load will include a combination of first-year writing, writing in the disciplines, creative writing, literature, and/or Honors seminar courses, depending on the applicant’s expertise and departmental needs. In addition to teaching, faculty will be expected to advise and mentor creative writing majors; publish scholarly and/or creative work; and engage in university service.

A PhD in creative writing or a closely related field is required for this tenure-track position. Strong preference will be given to candidates who specialize in prose (fiction, non-fiction, or hybrid forms), have experience teaching first-year writing courses, and have a clear record of teaching excellence. We will prioritize additional expertise in publishing studies, digital storytelling, and/or multicultural or underrepresented literatures.

Millikin University is a private, comprehensive institution serving approximately 1,800 undergraduate, graduate, full-time and part-time students who study in four colleges/schools: Arts and Sciences, Business, Fine Arts and Professional Studies. The typical teaching load is 3/3, including a multi-genre introduction to creative writing (fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction) and upper-level electives in the candidate’s specialization. 

Beloit College has a long and distinctive history in the field of creative writing, including an annual visiting Mackey Chair in Writing and the Beloit Fiction Journal. Creative writing class sizes are small (cap 15) and students are engaged. The successful candidate will have the freedom to design courses to their strengths and interests.

  • Serve on department committees.
  • Collaborate actively with faculty in the Department as well as the Writing Center.
  • Develop and foster relationships across disciplines in order to support programming.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Responsible for teaching undergraduate courses, both online and in the classroom. Course load is 24hrs per academic year, or 12hrs per semester.
  • Create and maintain an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking.
  • Employ culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and approaches.
  • Evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters and grade student work.
  • Ability and motivation to foreground issues related to diversity in the curriculum.
  • Recruitment and retention of students.
  • Advise and mentor students, specifically during Fall and Spring Advising sessions.
  • Maintain an active program of personal scholarly advancement, including appropriate national and regional presentations and publication.
