Biography Of Grandfather

This is a biography of my grandfather, a man whose wisdom and kindness has had a lasting impact on my life. Born in the early 1900s, he was the eldest of seven children. He grew up in a rural town in the Midwest, where he worked hard on the family farm and learned the value of hard work from a young age. How I created an heirloom book of my grandfather’s life story

How I would create my grandfather’s heirloom book differently

From elementary to high school I somehow gained the reputation among my family as “the writer.” It was a combination of my mom being friends with the publisher of our local Filipino community newspaper and making me print stories about my vacations or scholarship application essays, and then majoring in English in university. By that time, one of my uncles had pressured me to publish an article about my paternal grandfather’s time in the army and participation in the 1942 Bataan Death March .

In my junior university year, a few of my English courses focused on biographies and oral translations. That inspired me to perhaps start on something around my grandfather’s life. By this time, he was almost 90 so when I sat down with him he couldn’t remember much, and what he did say was very straightforward. (I would realize later that my grandfather was not a very expressive person unless he was really angry or happy.) For example he’d say something like “the Japanese took Manila” during World War II but I could not imagine in my mind at the time what that looked like. Today, you could easily Google what this meant and find some photographs, newspaper headlines, maybe even video footage of the war. While the Death March seemed to be a long walk without much food, his time in the POW camp must have been more life threatening as he recalls leaving and weighing only 75 pounds—yet he never expressed that with much gravity, at least in my opinion.

After that meeting, I didn’t feel I had a story but kept thinking about how to document my family’s story in some way.

A few years before my grandfather approached 100, I decided that we should self-publish his story with the goal of presenting it at his 100th birthday. After my junior university year, I had already transcribed an entire video interview my uncle made in 1998 or so. I figured—with the help of my sister, uncle, and cousin (who’d also graduated with an English degree)—we could piece together a story and fill in the gaps with photos of my grandfather and family.

Stage 1: Photo and document collection

I believe it was around 2012 when I asked my extended family for photos for the project. Collecting all the emails of my aunts, uncles and cousins was a project in itself! Between my immediate family’s albums, my aunt’s, and a plastic box of photos of my grandparents (and some of their ancestors) my uncle had, there was A LOT to go through. Not only did we have the old black and white and sepia tone photos and the more modern glossy colour photos, my grandfather was an aerial photographer, so he had photos of aerial views and of his travels abroad.

There was a stack of colour photo negatives from around the 50s that I had digitized at London Drugs, and the quality was still pretty amazing.

These two photos were taken in New York City, the last at the Empire State Building.

To put my grandfather’s health into perspective, he was living alone in an apartment in a senior’s complex in east Vancouver from about 1990 to 2011. At the age of 97 it was clear he wasn’t fit to live on his own and was even hospitalized. Members of my family flew from across the continent thinking those were his last days, but he recovered and was transferred to an assisted living home until he moved to the facility where he finally passed away in 2014. While packing up his belongings, my aunt found a file of documents including my grandfather’s time in the army and air force, his flight training, logs, and even hand-typed and written letters to and from government officials who sent him abroad to San Francisco to study mechanics and piloting.

In my opinion, these were some of the most interesting parts of my grandfather’s story we included as they pieced together what he went through during that time. Each document also added to the page count!

Stage 2: Compilation

Using the interview transcription, I put together the text of my grandfather’s story and ran that by my fellow “editors.” My uncle said that it would be nice to include anecdotes from family members to give a more holistic perspective of who my grandfather was , aside from the marriage-kids-army-career-immigration milestones he passed in the Philippines and Canada. So I collected anecdotes from my sister, dad, aunts and uncles, family friends, and cousins. Some of these were Skype calls and voice recordings that I transcribed, since not everyone was comfortable with writing and sending by email. One of my uncles—who arguably has the best recollection of and most number of stories about my family—neglected to send me anything. But because I had a voice recording app on my phone, I stole one of the stories he told at the dinner table one day, and included that.

Thanks to my half-cousin who lives in Australia, I received a scanned letter from my half-aunt in the Philippines, who I’ve never met. It was really nice to be able to add her story and photos of my grandfather’s descendants on her side of the family.

Once we had the text and anecdotes, my sister and I planned a general layout of photos and documents  ( not easy to do, as it was hard to tell the year when many of the photos were taken). Then we had to find someone who could create the interior of the book for us.

Stage 3: Design

So if I had the formatting skills I have now, we would have saved some money (and time). But then, I believed we needed the help of a graphic designer , so my sister paid $300 to a colleague with these skills, who we’d met in the self-development group we were all in.

I gave her the Word file of the text, renamed all the file names of the documents and photos, and sent her some guidelines about where the images should go. She did a great job of determining how many photos would fit on a page and recommended some of the really nice vertical photos get their own page.

The cover I envisioned for this book was really simple , and inspired by a book of poems called  Execution Poems, written by my former university professor, Canadian poet George Elliott Clarke . It’s a textured black cover with engraving for the title (no colour). But instead of engraving I thought it would be cool to have the title in gold or silver (I’m more of a silver person).

My cousin’s partner, Adele Zanni , is a renowned artist, and volunteered to do two family trees for the book. Our designer had to put my family’s names in the leaves, and then Adele wrote them in before physically delivering the poster-size artwork at my grandfather’s funeral in March 2014.

Three spouses and 3 kids have since been added to our family since this was made!

Stage 4: Printing

Once our designer had finished the interior, we had the file ready but in order to explain what I wanted for the cover, I had to go to Jukebox Print in Vancouver and select from their cardstock. I also chose a semi-gloss paper for the interior because good ol’ thin white wasn’t going to cut it for the colour photos. While I would have liked to support a women-owned business, I don’t know of any women who own printing companies in my city, and I hadn’t yet met broker Sussan Toub.

Even though we only needed around 32 or 33 copies of the book, I rounded the number to 35 and the total cost came out to $75 CAD per book. Not your average paperback price! But the book turned out beautifully and instead of waiting to receive payments from various family members (some of whom lived abroad), my uncle helped with the payment for the batch so we could complete the printing and distribute the books.

I believe using a lower stock of paper for the interior may have brought down the price, but the quality and durability of the book would not have been as high.

And while it would have been more economical to use a service like Amazon KDP or IngramSpark to print the book for us (and take a cut of sales), that would have also allowed anyone anywhere to buy the book. There are a lot of personal photos of my family in it, and one of my cousins was almost hesitant to even put his name in because I store the digital (PDF) version on Dropbox and he doesn’t ever want to be found on the Internet! I just discovered in the process of creating my second book (with Lulu , an alternative to IngramSpark that uses vegan inks and is a certified B Corp) that you can use the service to print books without putting them on sale to the public , which is exactly what we did.

I mailed two copies and the Ilagan (maiden name of my grandfather’s first wife) family tree over to my half-cousin in Australia, who wired me funds through MoneyMart (my first time using that service!). I also mailed a copy to my half-aunt in the Philippines and it took a few months to get there—I lost track of it after it left Canada Post’s hands, but she received it and sent me a letter to say thank you and some photos of her.

I still have my two extra copies of the book, which will likely go to one of my cousin’s children.

And that was one project I crossed off my bucket list!

It’s common for a grandchild to give a eulogy for a grandparent. Consider volunteering if you feel inclined and prepared to complete such a task.

However, if you don’t feel inclined or prepared to give the eulogy, it is common for children, friends, associates, or extended family members to complete the task. Of course, some families rely on the officiant or minister to speak about their loved one at a funeral.

Ask yourself these questions as you decide whether to write and present the eulogy.

Do you have something positive to say?  Are you reasonably sure you could get through the presentation?  It's common for people to cry while reading a eulogy, but could you manage the presentation in the presence of tears or excess emotion? 

Don’t worry that you aren’t a “good enough” writer or speaker. As long as people can hear you, and you speak positively about the deceased – and from the heart – you are equipped for the job.

Before you agree to the task, consider these tips for writing a eulogy for a grandfather. We’ll give you ideas on the writing and delivery process to help you decide if you are up for the job. 

Reflect on memories 

Take time to brainstorm the memories you have of your grandfather. Write down as much as you can. Let your memories lead the way. You might find yourself thinking about the first time you went fishing together.

Or you might remember the weekly visits to his house. Even if something you used to do together seems small or silly, write it down. Some of the best memories are the simple ones.

Recall the stories 

Grandfathers are some of the best storytellers. They have lived through a lot and have a lifetime of experiences. If your grandfather was a storyteller, be sure to include some of his stories in the eulogy.

Think of the stories he would tell on repeat or to the new people he met. If he told a story a lot, it was likely one of his favorites.

Even if your grandfather told the same story a thousand times, tell it again. Your family will appreciate hearing it one last time. And it might help them remember something special they loved about your grandfather.

By sharing his stories, you honor his life. Grandfathers have a lot of wisdom and it's a part of their legacy to leave some behind. Through the art of storytelling, you unravel the wisdom a little at a time. 

Paint a picture 

Everyone had a different relationship with your grandfather. To some, he was a brother. Others may have cherished him as a life-long friend. This is an opportunity to share what it was like to have him as a grandfather. Were you close? Was there something special you did together? Did he let you do things your parents didn't?

In your eulogy, you get to paint a picture of what it was like to grow up with your grandfather. Your relationship was unique and you are free to express that. By sharing about life with your grandfather, you are honoring him in the best way.

Express emotions 

It's OK if writing the eulogy makes you emotional. Don't be afraid to express those emotions in your speech. It might even make sense to write a few lines about how losing your grandpa affects you. Grief is a form of praise. Even though sometimes it’s hard, expressing emotions in words is cathartic. 

Writing a eulogy is a way to celebrate and grieve for your grandfather. It might feel overwhelming at times, but remember that there's no right or wrong way to grieve. If your heart is aching, let it ache.

The emotions, both happy and sad, are a testament to how much you loved your grandfather. 

Trust the process 

If you are feeling nervous about reading your eulogy out loud, don’t worry. You are not alone. It's normal to feel nervous before sharing something vulnerable and heartfelt. It takes courage to stand in front of people and express yourself.

If uncomfortable feelings creep in, think of your grandfather. Honor his memory with your courage. Your vulnerability after his death proves how much he meant to you.  

Don’t overthink it 

As humans, we tend to overthink things. Be gentle with yourself in this time of grief. Let yourself be free from the burden of overthinking. Don't focus too much on your mind.

Instead, let the words flow from your heart. The heart will remember the impactful ways your grandfather touched your life.

Public speaking is a special type of skill. Very few people are naturally comfortable in front of a crowd. If you are shy or nervous to read the eulogy out loud, practice it with a family member or friend. Even if you’re feeling confident, you should run through the speech a few times. Rehearsing your words will help you when it’s time to share them. 

Though eulogies are a type of speech, no one in the audience is expecting you to hold it together. You are grieving and strong emotions are part of that process. Take a deep breath and commit to doing the best you can given the circumstances.

If your grandpa was a person of faith, you might consider using Bible verses in his eulogy. Of course, it’s always best to share passages that were important to the deceased. Look for baptismal or confirmation records that may list a verse – or check the deceased’s Bible to find underlined passages.

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.  Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Psalm 27 begins:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?”

John 14:1-3

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

• For those of you who don't know me, I am [name], the grandson of [name]. We are here today to celebrate the life of this wonderful man. My grandpa watched me take my first steps, he taught me my first words, and he was there when I caught my first fish. In fact, he was there for most of my firsts growing up. He taught me so much. It feels like I learned most of what I know from him. I'd like to share a few stories that help illustrate what kind of grandpa he was [insert stories].
• Grandpa [name] was my best friend. I loved spending the weekends at his house and watching baseball together. He was one-of-a-kind. He always made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. He was my greatest supporter and he told me I could achieve anything I put my mind to. He was a courageous man who taught me the importance of discipline and hard work.  
• Grandpa was a man of few words, so when he did speak, everyone listened. He was the glue that kept our family together. He worked hard to provide for his family. He never complained about how much he worked or how tired he was. I always knew if I needed something, I could count on my grandfather. He was an incredible role model. If I turn out to be half the man he was I’ll consider myself a success.  
• Pa was an incredible dude. If he was here now, he'd have a good chuckle at me using the word 'dude.' He always laughed at the lingo us kids used. We would show him our newest toys and invite him to play video games. When he was growing up the radio was his method of entertainment. He grew up in a simpler time, but he embraced our love for technology and new gadgets.  
• Grandpa had the best stories. Even if I'd heard them on more than one occasion, I'd listen close for a new detail. He had an incredible heart and spirit. He was enthusiastic when it came to storytelling. As his grandson, I can only hope to tell the stories half as well as he did. I have two children now and it's important to me that they remember their great-grandfather. I'd like to share one of my favorite stories.

• Grandpa was one of the kindest men I have ever met. He would give you the shirt off his back. His generosity was limitless. He was a smart man and he worked hard for everything he had. He didn't judge others or criticize different ways of life. He would nod his head and say something like "To each their own." He meant it. He was a role model to me. I am sad that we won't get to have our front porch talks anymore. 
• I will miss Grandpa [name] greatly. Aside from my parents, he is the only person that has known me my whole life. It's surreal to think he will no longer be here. It makes me very emotional to think about my children growing up without him. I have been very blessed to have him as a grandpa for 35 years. I will treasure the memories I have of him. I’d like to share one of my favorites with you now. 
• Gramps was an incredible person. He raised 5 children and helped care for 16 grandchildren!  On Sunday we'd gather at his house. He shared memories of his time in the war and talk about how it shaped his life. As a child, I didn't understand the impact of his service. But as an adult, it makes me so proud. Gramps served his country and he served his family. I was lucky to call him my grandpa.
• What a blessing it has been to call [name] my grandfather. While prepping for this eulogy, I recounted lots of memories and went through old photos. When I told my friends a few stories about my grandfather, they expressed how lucky I was. We had a special bond and he taught me so much about life. I'd like to share a couple of my favorite stories with you today. 
• Gramps lived his life with gusto. He grew up in a poor family. He worked hard to help his family get out of poverty. At the age of 18, he left home and started his own business. When he met my grandmother, he stole her heart immediately. She said she fell in love with a man who she knew would never give up. Gramps was relentless. Even on his deathbed, he didn't give up. He smiled and participated in life until the very end.

Your grandfather might have played a key role in your life . Perhaps he helped shape who you are. Or was the person you turned to when you needed advice.

Regardless, remember your eulogy isn't a final goodbye. His legacy will live on in the stories and memories you pass on to your children and grandchildren.

The Story Behind My Story: My Grandfather

In the lead up to publication of my novel, I’d like to write more about the ‘The Story Behind the Story’: the genesis of my novel, and the people and places that inspired it.

My Grandfather

My paternal grandfather was one of eighteen children. I don’t know much about his parents or his early life and, as far as I’m aware, no one’s researched that branch of the family tree. I remember my father opening a tin of family photos (some are included in this post), inside which was a handwritten list of all my grandfather’s siblings and their dates of birth. There were only seventeen names on the list, but Dad couldn’t remember who’d been left out. 

I don’t know how much schooling my grandfather had—I’m guessing he only completed primary school, like my grandmother. He worked on the wharf as a labourer, but only when a boat was in. To find out if he had work that week, he had to read the newspaper to see if his number was listed.

My grandparents didn’t have much money—partly because of my grandfather’s unskilled and sporadic work, and partly because of his drinking habit. They never owned a house or a car, and my grandfather rode a bike. When my father was a youngster, each payday my grandmother would send him around to the pub to collect his father’s pay before my grandfather spent it over the bar. Because he was too young to enter, Dad would wait outside until a mate of my grandfather’s walked past and Dad would ask him to fetch his father. My grandfather would send his mate back out to tell Dad he wasn’t there, but Dad knew he was because he could see his bike outside. So, his father started parking his bike in the street behind, so Dad wouldn’t see it.

My grandfather was a quiet fellow, except when he’d been drinking. He had the nickname ‘Adger’, which was short for ‘Agitator’, and my father became known as ‘Young Adge’—he inherited the title, and he also inherited his father’s trait of winding people up for the fun of it.

That wasn’t the only trait the two shared. They both loved the outdoors, and Dad’s family often went camping along the east coast of Tasmania, or fishing up the lakes, or ‘roo or duck shooting. Back then, with little money, the hunting and fishing was out of necessity—if my grandfather shot a kangaroo or caught some fish, it meant they had meat for the week, something they couldn’t have otherwise afforded.

Although he died before I turned six, my memories of my grandfather are vivid:

He wore dark grey trousers with braces, and a white shirt with copper-coloured bands around the sleeves. His fingers were tar-stained from smoking cigarettes, which he rolled himself, and he smelled of aftershave and Drum tobacco.

When my sister and I visited, he’d pour some of his hot tea onto his saucer and blow on it until it was cool enough for us to drink. He’d make us sit up straight, and hold the saucer to our lips while we sipped.

One day he poured real beer into a glass and gave it to my sister to drink.

My sister and I were fascinated by the smoke from his cigarettes, so he rolled matchsticks inside Tally-Ho papers, burnt the ends so they looked real, and gave them to us so we had our own smokes. (These sorts of things were acceptable in the ’70s!) 

I didn’t realise my grandfather was short, just that my grandmother was taller, and I didn’t think that was odd.

Their bathroom had a huge copper that was taller than me, and their toilet cistern was up high near the ceiling, and had a chain you pulled to flush.

Their kitchen seemed dark, but warm. It had a leadlight dresser just inside the door, and a wood stove. It always smelled of cooking—onions, a stew, or freshly baked biscuits.

On race days, the transistor sat on the table, next to the newspaper, which lay open at the horse-racing page. My grandfather would mark the horses he’d bet on, and as each race started, he’d quieten. When the horses reached the home stretch, and the announcer’s voice accelerated, he leaned in closer and hissed, ‘Psssss, psssss …’ My sister and I would join him, hissing too, without knowing who or what we were hissing for.

I remember him sitting at the table and polishing his shoes to a gloss with nugget and a brush. He was an amateur cobbler, and whenever we broke a shoe, he’d repair it, good as new. When the buckle of my favourite shoe broke, he sewed it back on with dark brown thread. It didn’t match the purple of the suede or the other sandal, but I didn’t care because I had my favourite shoe back.

He had a ginger beer plant, which he kept in my father’s old bedroom. Before I saw the plant, I imagined it would be living and green, and was a bit disappointed it was a machine and grey. I was even more disappointed when I didn’t like the taste of ginger beer, but I pretended I did because I didn’t want to hurt my grandfather’s feelings.

There are a few things I don’t remember, like the unpainted boards of the exterior of their house, or the missing fence posts, or the small backyard of dust and no lawn—all of this I saw later, and only in photographs.

Not infrequently, my grandparents bickered, not enough to call it an argument, but they used a tone of voice with each other that they never used with us. I didn’t like their bickering—they were two of my favourite people and I wanted them to love each other.

One evening in early December 1972, the phone rang and Dad left to go to my grandparents’ house. We knew it was serious, and I remember waiting by the front window and hearing the siren in the distance that my mother said was the ambulance taking my grandfather to hospital.

The next morning, my mother told us that my grandfather had died overnight, and I told that for news at school that day. 

My grandfather’s funeral was in the church next door to my school, and I don’t remember my father or my grandmother crying. Afterwards, my sister came back to my classroom with me while the rest of the congregation went to the gravesite. My sister wasn’t of school age, and although we were only playing with plasticine, she couldn’t do it very well and the teacher had to ask her what she’d made. 

Sometime after that, I’m not sure when, we went to my grandparents’ house again. It had been cleared out because it was being demolished for a new highway. I ran through rooms that were empty and echoed, and I must have grown, because I was taller than the copper.

My father, with fishing rod and waders, with my grandfather and cousin. I couldn’t help but notice how in all the photos, my grandfather’s attention is on the child.

I doubt I looked back at their house as I left, even though it was the last time I ever saw it.

When writing a novel, it’s funny the stories that come back to you. Almost as soon as I started writing, my grandparents’ voices came to me. They had so much to say, and there was so much material in my family history that I had to use some of it in my novel.

My novel is not a family history—it’s completely fictional. But I did draw on memories—my own, and those of family members, stories I’d heard when I was growing up. I’ve shaved pieces off them, added bits, shuffled them around, and what remains bears little resemblance to what actually happened.

Yet, the characters are very familiar to me and probably to anyone who knew my grandparents.

I realised only recently what my novel actually is—it’s my attempt to explain where I come from, the background to my life. It wasn’t a conscious decision, or something I set out to do, but these things happen once you start writing …

A mother, father, and a baby are never alone in a room—that room is filled with ghosts. Past generations linger in every room a child enters as they’re growing up. I realise now how many ghosts were present in the rooms in which I grew up—some kind and loving, but others I wish I could have banished, especially with the hindsight I have now.

After my grandfather’s death, my grandmother started coming to our house every weekday, and she kept coming until I was 14-years-old. She was a gentle presence in my childhood. A role model, in fact. 

Although I barely had time to get to know my grandfather, he was significant, too. There’s no doubt he was a bit of a rogue, but all he ever gave me was kindness and a sense of being loved and enjoyed.

I feel a deep connection with my grandparents, all of them, even my maternal grandfather who passed away before I was born. They inspired some of the main characters in my novel, and if you ever read it, I suspect you’ll spot them …

Oh, Louise. That is such a beautiful post. You have brought your grandfather back to life in your description of him. I grew up without knowing my grandparents, who had all remained in England after my parents brought my sisters and me to Australia. I met my mum’s mum — my Nana Ruby — when I was 14, and my dad’s dad and stepmother — Tomdad and Grandma Miri — when I was 18. At 11, I met my dad’s aunt and uncle — siblings Margaret and John — and it is Uncle John who inspired the Gallipoli veteran (and kindred spirit to the protagonist) in the novel I am writing. Although I had such a short time with that generation of my family, I feel blessed to have met them all, and I still have so much love for them.

Your grandfather reminds me of mine; A man’s man with a tough reputation but only gentleness evident to us kids. He seemed a softy to us but life circumstances, poverty, war, alcoholism and that generation’s all-important male bravado left a different, lasting impression on his children…my mother. I can see how much harder it is to parent than grandparent, and how much wiser you are by the time you get to grandparent age, so I’ve no doubt your mother’s view of her father and yours are at odds. The first time I heard someone talk about my grandfather’s flaws, I was aghast! I couldn’t believe he had faults! I’d never seen them! Gently provocative post, Louise. As I was reading it, I was thinking of my own maternal grandfather, who died when I was six years old. I don’t remember much about him, but recall with great clarity him lying, dead, on a beautiful bed in a room with french doors. Everything in the room was white (it probably wasn’t), he was under mosquito netting and Dad told me to give my grandfather one last kiss. I did, and was horrified that his face was prickly with fresh whiskers against my lips, which was at odds with the otherwise sombre gentleness and quietness of the situation.

I love that you remember the mosquito netting and french doors! What an ethereal moment, until the kissing, that is. I feel for your six-year-old self having to kiss a prickly, dead person—I can understand why the memory remains vivid. xx

I’m so thankful I had my paternal grandparents. My grandfather made us feel so special, and as for my grandmother—she was saintly! She came to our house every weekday for nearly nine years, and the only reason she stopped coming was because we moved out of town and she didn’t drive. I don’t remember her ever missing a day ever. She must have, but they were obviously rare. Every Wednesday afternoon, she went to my uncle’s, her other son, for dinner, but apart from that, she was always at our house, steady and constant. Ida, the main character in my novel, is based on her. I’ve tried writing a blog post about her, but it’s hard to sum her up succinctly as she was so significant in my life.

Ah, she sounds wonderful. I’m so looking forward to reading your book! Nice that you got to spend so much time with her, too – I can see how she was so significant in your life. When I was a child, weekends were always the same – my maternal grandparents on Saturday, my paternal grandparents on Sunday (as my grandfather was a vicar and my grandmother taught Sunday School). I have lovely memories of those days, the tick of the clock in the old vicarage, the noise of the Saturday markets.

I’d love to read your memories of them—even the snippet you’ve written here creates a beautiful image. I love the sound of clocks ticking—they feature in my novel, too. I miss that sound now that they’re all digital. I remember waking up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet, and hearing the ticking was always reassuring. I love the idea of those ghosts in the nursery, Louise, the way our parents share the room with their parents and so on down the line. Ancestry is wonderful and you do such a splendid job of conveying the richness of your grandfather here. I also enjoy the degree to which your fiction takes its cue from earlier memories such as these. The things you ‘make up’ come from deep within you. I sometimes wonder what sense my grandsons will make of their grandparents when we’re both long gone. I’m glad we can be there for them in a way my grandparents were not. Writing about my grandfather made me realise, too, how significant and formative our early memories are (I’ll blame him for my drinking and smoking days!). I realise now how many ghosts were in the room when I had my children, too, and they weren’t all bad … I’m sure my grandparents would be chuffed that decades after they passed away, I still remember them fondly. Were you writing about MY grandfather? You could have been. Except mine was a meatworker and caught crabs to feed his family when there was no money. My grandparents grew everything in their backyard and he did exactly the same thing with his cups of tea. He went to the horse races every Saturday and when he didn’t he’d be sitting beside the trannie with the paper in front of him. He rode a bike and was a drinker and smoker. This was strange to read because the similarities are uncanny!

So many similarities—I suspect a certain demographic (the working class) of that era all did similar things. Much like groups of us all do similar things today … I’m glad I have the photos of him giving beer to my sister, because I doubt people would believe me otherwise! Gosh, you’d be in trouble from Child Protection these days! I’m glad this piece brought back memories for you, too. x

I’m glad it moved you, Rae. Even as a child, I felt those ghosts. The ghost of my maternal grandmother was never far from any room in our house, and she was still alive! Dad’s ghosts were really nice to have around, though.

I’m hooked now – can’t wait to get my hands on your novel. Imagine having to invite your 17 siblings and their families to yours for Christmas. I wonder if they did all get together? I also gasp at the thought of what 18 pregnancies, deliveries and feedings must do to a woman! They were certainly tough times but yet the simplicity of it has a certain appeal to me today.

I might be wrong, but I think my great-grandmother died at 51. She was, by all accounts, a lovely person and very easy-going—I think you’d have to be with that many kids. I don’t know how she did it … I don’t think they did all get together, as by the time the younger ones were born, the older ones had scattered. There’s a story that at a funeral for one of the siblings, two of the brothers introduced themselves to each other, saying, ‘I’m Walter. I’m a brother of the deceased.’ The other brother said, ‘I’m George (I think that was his name). I’m his brother, too.’ I know what you mean about the simplicity of life back then—the simple routines and slower-pace. Maybe we’ve romanticised it, though. Thanks for commenting. x

Clarence Thomas is a complex man who rose from a life of poverty in the segregated Deep South to become an associate justice on the United States Supreme Court. In his candid memoir, Justice Thomas chronicles his journey and pays tribute to the one real hero in his life --- his maternal grandfather.

On June 23, 1948, a sweltering night in Pinpoint, Georgia, “when the air is so wet that you can barely draw breath,” Clarence Thomas is born to M.C. and Leola “Pigeon” Thomas. Delivered by a midwife in his Aunt Annie’s house, Clarence is, in his mother’s words, “too stubborn to cry.” Two years later his parents are divorced and his father moves to Philadelphia, leaving the family behind.

In the summer of 1955, “without a word of explanation,” Pigeon sends Clarence and his younger brother Myers to live with their grandparents. On the morning the boys move in, his grandfather, whom he calls Daddy, tells them, “The damn vacation is over.” While almost all other family members belong to Baptist or other Protestant churches, Daddy is a Roman Catholic convert. Daddy makes sure the boys are educated in the structured and disciplined environment of St. Benedict the Moor Grammar School. At St. Benedict’s Clarence is treated with respect by the nuns and pushed to do his best. At home he is expected to pull his load. After graduation, he attends St. Pius X, Savannah’s only Catholic high school for blacks.

A few months shy of his 16th birthday, Clarence believes he has a calling to become a priest and transfers to Saint John Vianney seminary school. Clarence is one of the first African-American students admitted. After graduation, he and several other classmates head for Immaculate Conception seminary, near Kansas City, Missouri. During his time there, Clarence begins to doubt his vocation. He leaves the seminary, although he knows his decision will break the promise he made to Daddy not to quit. Shortly after returning home, Daddy asks him to leave, saying he will probably turn out like his ‘“no-good daddy or those other no-good Pinpoint Negroes.’” With nowhere else to turn, Clarence moves in with his mother. It is 1968 --- a year of riots, assassinations and disillusion --- the year that he becomes an “angry black man.”

To prove his daddy wrong, Clarence enrolls in Holy Cross College in Boston to finish his education. There he meets other black students who feel disillusioned as he does, and he joins them in protest demonstrations. Clarence also becomes acquainted with Kathy Ambush, a student at a nearby Catholic school for women. He decides to pursue a law degree at Yale, and in 1971, he and Kathy are married.

When a friend tells him that John Danforth, a Yale Law School graduate serving as Missouri’s Attorney General, is looking for other Yalies to work for him, once again Clarence moves to Missouri --- this time to Jefferson City with Kathy. He works in the attorney general’s office, where job satisfaction is high but the salary is not. A few years later he accepts a higher paid position with Monsanto Chemical Company in St. Louis, but he finds little job satisfaction there.

After being offered another job working for Danforth, who has become a U.S. Senator, he and Kathy pack up and head for Washington, D.C. His connection with Danforth, along with his reputation and keen mind, gets him noticed by influential Republicans who see him as a rising star. But on the home front all is not well. Eventually he and Kathy divorce. He leaves Kathy and their son Jamal and throws himself into his work, and at times, he loses himself in a bottle.

Clarence later meets Virginia Bess Lamp. In 1987 she becomes his second wife and his “pillar of love, strength, and support.” Her support comes in handy when he is nominated by President George Bush to fill a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court. In 1991, after a bitter confirmation hearing that includes allegations of sexual harassment by Anita Hill, he is appointed the first black Supreme Court justice. 

MY GRANDFATHER’S SON is Clarence Thomas’s deeply personal and eloquent story of faith, hope and courage. But most of all it is a loving tribute to his grandfather --- the man whose hard work, discipline and determination made it possible for a child born into a life of poverty and segregation to become a justice on the United States Supreme Court.

I Think of My Grandfather Every Time I Make Kofta

Whatever my grandfather did, he devoted himself completely to it. He took his time. He did it well. It didn’t matter how the small the job — cutting a melon for dessert; ironing shirts and trousers and, to my embarrassment, even underpants; wrapping gifts with paper by folding perfect lines; parallel parking on the curb in front of the fish market. Everything, to him, was worth doing properly, carefully, thoughtfully, perfectly.

I lived with him and my grandmother most summers when I was a child, and the way he took care with the utterly mundane — his habit of low speed and high quality — was infuriating. Mostly, I think, because I couldn’t cultivate the same habit myself. Or I didn’t see the point. I wanted all those tiny, tiny things that he took time to do so well not to matter at all. If he gave me a task, and I didn’t do it correctly, he’d follow up behind me, resetting the table or refolding the laundry just the way he showed me to do in the first place.

“No one cares!” I insisted. “You’re doing all this work for nothing!” My misdirected fury made him laugh, warmly, because somehow he was kind and gentle and patient even while correcting me. It was, I thought as a child, borderline deranged.

This is the grandfather who gave me my name when I was born. He wrote it on a piece of paper in his ornate cursive and mailed it to my mother in London. By the time I knew him, he was running the ice cream company he founded in Nairobi, and he let me visit him at the office as often as I liked, which was often. I’d sit by his desk and eat tutti-frutti and chocolate ice cream and play with his paperweights and do made-up calculations on his calculator and go home with the smell of industrial freezer in my hair.

“You were always his favorite,” my grandmother says, when I bring him up now, and I hate how good it feels to hear that, because he was my favorite, too.

When he got sick, really sick, I went to Nairobi and sat by his bedside in the hospital. He’d say my name cheerfully when I came in, making the T soft, as it’s meant to be, following with a string of nicknames he had for me like some kind of royal title. But then he’d get quiet. He was tired, and sometimes confused. I brought him his brown resin comb and combed his silver hair in a deep side part, the way he combed it his entire life. I fed him a gelatinous goat-trotter broth, sent over by my auntie, one spoon at a time, sometimes waiting a minute between bites for him to signal that he was ready for more. He called me by my mother’s name. He fell asleep.

He died six years ago, but in my earliest memories of my grandfather, he’s drinking whiskey out of a beautiful glass. He’s pulling a clean handkerchief from his pocket and pressing it to my watering eye. He’s laughing from his belly like an evil cartoon character. But mostly he’s cooking — browning English sausages for us in the morning before a road trip, taking his time so every single link is evenly browned all over, with no lines. He’s frying lamb kofta in a wide, scratched saucepan — the meatballs spherical, each one the same size, then carefully transporting them to a pot of tomato sauce.

He was known, within a wide circle of family and friends, for this dish, and for making it on request. He emailed me the recipe when I was in my early 20s — that was when we emailed each other a lot. I followed the directions as closely I could, but the dish wasn’t as good as his. Not because of the veneer of nostalgia. Not because he was the kind of cook guided by instinct, or the kind who withheld his technique — he did, in fact, measure things, and when he was asked for a recipe, he gladly shared those measurements. I think his kofta was better because he was really good, better than most other people, and definitely better than me, at every step of the dish. He paid attention. He cared. And that’s that.

The only way around this has been changing the dish and changing my expectations for it. A mash of beans and herbs, held together with egg, generously seasoned with ginger, garlic and green chile, makes a truly delicious vegetarian base. Roasting the kofta in a sheet pan means they turn out evenly brown and crisp without your standing over them, watching them, turning them. I love the version I make, which is vegetarian and often uses canned tomato, even though it would surely upset my grandfather to see all those lumpy meatballs — meatballs without any meat in them ? But I also know he would have never let on.

Clarence Thomas is Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Born in Pinpoint, Georgia, he is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and Yale Law School. He lives with his wife and great nephew in northern Virginia.

I was nine years old when I met my father. His name was M. C. Thomas, and my birth certificate describes him as a "laborer." My mother divorced him in 1950 and he moved north to Philadelphia, leaving his family behind in Pinpoint, the tiny Georgia community where I was born. I saw him only twice when I was young. The first time was when my mother called her parents, with whom my brother Myers and I then lived, and told them that someone at her place wanted to see us. They called a cab and sent us to her housing-project apartment, where my father was waiting. "I am your daddy," he told us in a firm, shameless voice that carried no hint of remorse for his inexplicable absence from our lives. He said nothing about loving or missing us, and we didn't say much in return—it was as though we were meeting a total stranger—but he treated us politely enough, and even promised to send us a pair of Elgin watches with flexible bands, which were popular at the time. Though we watched the mail every day, the watches never came, and when a year or so had gone by, my grandparents bought them for us instead. My father had broken the only promise he ever made to us. After that we heard nothing more from him, not even a Christmas or birthday card. For years my brother and I would ask ourselves how a man could show no interest in his own children. I still wonder.

I saw him for the second time after I graduated from high school. He had come to see his own father in Montgomery, not far from Pinpoint, and I went there to visit him. I felt I owed it to him—he was, after all, my father, and he had let my grandparents raise me without interference—but Myers would have nothing to do with "C," as we called him, saying that the only father we had was our grandfather. That may sound harsh, but it was nothing more than the truth, for me as much as my brother. In every way that counts, I am my grandfather's son. I even called him Daddy because that was what my mother called him. (His friends called him Mike.) He was dark, strong, proud, and determined to mold me in his image. For a time I rejected what he taught me, but even then I still yearned for his approval. He was the one hero in my life. What I am is what he made me.

I am descended from the West African slaves who lived on the barrier islands and in the low country of Georgia, South Carolina, and coastal northern Florida. In Georgia my people were called Geechees; in South Carolina, Gullahs. They were isolated from the rest of the population, black and white alike, and so maintained their distinctive dialect and culture well into the twentieth century. What little remains of Geechee life is now celebrated by scholars of black folklore, but when I was a boy, "Geechee" was a derogatory term for Georgians who had profoundly Negroid features and spoke with a foreign-sounding accent similar to the dialects heard on certain Caribbean islands.

Much of my family tree is lost to me, its secrets having gone to the grave with my grandparents, but I know that Daddy's people worked on a three-thousand-acre rice plantation in Liberty County, just south of Savannah, and after their manumission they stayed nearby. The maternal side of my mother's family also came from Liberty County, and probably worked on the same plantation, most of which has remained intact. Not long ago I saw it for the first time—during my youth blacks never went there unless they had a good reason—and found that the old barn in which my great-great-grandparents surely labored a century and a half ago is now a bed-and-breakfast inn whose Web site calls it "a perfect honeymoon hideaway." You'd never guess that slaves once worked there.

My mother, Leola, whom I called Pigeon, her family nickname, was born out of wedlock in 1929 or 1930.Her mother died in childbirth, and she saw little of Daddy as a child. At first she was raised by her maternal grandmother, who died when she was eight or nine years old. Then she went to live in Pinpoint with Annie Green, her mother's sister. C and his family moved near there to work at Bethesda Home for Boys, which is next to Pinpoint; that was where he met Pigeon, all of whose children he sired. My sister, Emma Mae, was born in 1946, with Myers Lee following three years later. I was born between them in Sister Annie's house on June 23, 1948. I was delivered by Lula Kemp, a midwife who came from the nearby community of Sandfly. It was one of those sweltering Georgia nights when the air is so wet that you can barely draw breath. To this day my mother swears I was too stubborn to cry.

Pinpoint is a heavily wooded twenty-five-acre peninsula on Shipyard Creek, a tidal salt creek ten miles southeast of Savannah. A shady, quiet enclave full of pines, palms, live oaks, and low-hanging Spanish moss, it feels cut off from the rest of the world, and it was even more isolated in the fifties than it is today. Then as now, Pinpoint was too small to be properly called a town. No more than a hundred people lived there, most of whom were related to me in one way or another. Their lives were a daily struggle for the barest of essentials: food, clothing, and shelter. Doctors were few and far between, so when you got sick, you stayed that way, and often you died of it. The house in which I was born was a shanty with no bathroom and no electricity except for . . .
