This CV example demonstrates the type of info you should be including within your Seaman CV, as well as how to format and layout the content in a way which looks professional and is easy for time-strapped recruiters to read.

This is the look and feel you should be aiming for, so remember to refer back to it throughout your CV writing process.

Seaman CV format and structure

Recruiters and employers are busy, and if they can’t find the information they’re looking for in a few seconds, it could be game over for your application.

You need to format and structure your CV in a way which allows the reader to pick out your key information with ease, even if they’re strapped for time.

It should be clear, easily legible, well-organised and scannable – check out some simple tips and tricks below:

How to write a CV

Tips for formatting your Seaman CV

  • Length: Your CV should always be limited to two sides of A4, regardless of whether you have a year or three decades of experience. With recruiters juggling multiple responsibilities, they don’t have time to sift through lengthy applications.
  • Readability : By formatting your section headings with bold or a different colour font and using bullet points to break up large blocks of text, you can help busy recruiters quickly scan through your CV. This makes it easier for them to find important details without wasting time.
  • Design & format: Your CV needs to look professional, sleek and easy to read. A subtle colour palette, clear font and simple design are generally best for this, as fancy designs are often harder to navigate.
  • Photos: Headshot photos aren’t required in a CV by most employers, but some creative and artistic industries like to see them. If you decide to include one, make sure you look smart and professional in the picture.

Quick tip: Creating a professional CV style can be difficult and time-consuming when using Microsoft Word or Google Docs. To create a winning CV quickly, try our quick-and-easy CV Builder and use one of their eye-catching professional CV templates.

CV formatting tips

CV structure

To make it easy for busy recruiters and hiring managers to digest your CV, divide the content into several key sections when writing it:

  • Contact details: Always list your contact details at the very top to avoid them being missed.
  • Profile: Start with an introductory paragraph that catches recruiters’ attention and summarises your offerings.
  • Work experience/career history: List your relevant work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your current position.
  • Education: Provide a concise summary of your education and qualifications.
  • Interests and hobbies: You can include an optional section to showcase any hobbies that demonstrate transferable skills.

Now you understand the basic layout of a CV, here’s what you should include in each section of yours.

Contact Details

Contact details

Kick-start your CV with your contact details, so recruiters can get in touch easily. Here’s what you should include:

  • Mobile number
  • Email address – Make sure it’s professional, with no silly nicknames.
  • Location – Your town or city is sufficient, rather than a full address.
  • LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL – Ensure they’ve been updated and are looking slick and professional.

Quick tip: Avoid listing your date of birth, marital status or other irrelevant details – they’re unnecessary at this stage.

Seaman CV Profile

Recruiters and hiring managers are busy, so it’s essential to catch their attention from the get-go.

A strong introductory profile (or personal statement , for junior candidates) at the top of the CV is the first thing they’ll read, so it’s a great chance to make an impression.

It should be a short but punchy summary of your key skills, relevant experience and accomplishments.

Ultimately, it should explain why you’re a great fit for the role you’re applying for and inspire recruiters to read the rest of your CV.

CV profile

How to write a good CV profile:

  • Make it short and sharp: When it comes to CV profile length, less is more, as recruiters are often time-strapped. Aim for around of 3-5 persuasive lines.
  • Tailor it: No matter how much time you put into your CV profile, it won’t impress if it’s irrelevant to the role you’re applying for. Before you start writing, make a list of the skills, knowledge and experience your target employer is looking for. Then, make sure to mention them in your CV profile and throughout the rest of your application.
  • Don’t add an objective: Leave your career objectives or goals out of your profile. You only have limited space to work with, so they’re best suited to your cover letter .
  • Avoid generic phrases: If your CV is riddled with clichès like “Dynamic thought-leader”, hit that delete button. Phrases like these are like a broken record to recruiters, who read them countless times per day. Hard facts, skills, knowledge and results are sure to yield far better results.

Example CV profile for Seaman

What to include in your seaman cv profile.

  • Experience overview: Demonstrate your suitability for your target jobs by giving a high level summary of your previous work work experience , including the industries you have worked in, types of employer, and the type of roles you have previous experience of.
  • Targeted skills: Make your most relevant Seaman key skills clear in your profile. These should be tailored to the specific role you’re applying for – so make sure to check the job description first, and aim to match their requirements as closely as you can.
  • Important qualifications: If you have any qualifications which are highly relevant to Seaman jobs, then highlight them in your profile so that employers do not miss them.

Quick tip: If you are finding it difficult to write an attention-grabbing CV profile, choose from hundreds of pre-written profiles across all industries, and add one to your CV with one click in our quick-and-easy CV Builder . Work experience

Now that recruiters have a good overview of your skills and abilities, you need to jump into the detail of your career history.

Give them a more thorough insight into what you can do by creating a detailed list of your relevant experience.

Start with your current role, and work backwards through all the relevant positions you’ve held. This could be freelance, contract or voluntary work too; as long as it’s related to the role you’re applying for.

Work experience

Structuring each job

Recruiters will be keen to gain a better idea of where you’ve worked and how you apply your skill-set in the workplace.

However, if they’re faced with huge, hard-to-read paragraphs, they may just gloss over it and move onto the next application.

To avoid this, use the simple 3-step role structure, as shown below:

Role descriptions

Start with a solid introduction to your role as a whole, in order to build some context.

Explain the nature of the organisation you worked for, the size of the team you were part of, who you reported to and what the overarching purpose of your job was.

Key responsibilities

Using easy-to-read bullet points, note down your day-to-day responsibilities in the role.

Make sure to showcase how you used your hard sector skills and knowledge.

Key achievements

To finish off each role and prove the impact you made, list 1-3 stand out achievements , results or accomplishments.

This could be anything which had a positive outcome for the company you worked for, or perhaps a client/customer. Where applicable, quantify your examples with facts and figures.

Sample job description for Seaman CV

Quick tip: Create impressive job descriptions easily in our quick-and-easy CV Builder by adding pre-written job phrases for every industry and career stage.

Education section

At the bottom of your CV is your full education section. You can list your formal academic qualifications, such as:

  • GCSE’s

As well as any specific Seaman qualifications that are essential to the jobs you are applying for. Note down the name of the qualification, the organisation at which you studied, and the date of completion.

Hobbies and interests

This section is entirely optional, so you’ll have to use your own judgement to figure out if it’s worth including.

If your hobbies and interests could make you appear more suitable for your dream job, then they are definitely worth adding.

Interests which are related to the industry, or hobbies like sports teams or volunteering, which display valuable transferable skills might be worth including.

A strong, compelling CV is essential to get noticed and land interviews with the best employers.

To ensure your CV stands out from the competition, make sure to tailor it to your target role and pack it with sector-specific skills and results.

Remember to triple-check for spelling and grammar errors before hitting send.

Good luck with the job search!

1. add contact information to your seaman resume.

Seaman Resume Contact Information Example # 1

[email protected] | 333-111-2222 | www.linkedin.com/in/dhruv-johnson

2. Add relevant education to your seaman resume

Your resume's education section should include:

  • The name of your school
  • The date you graduated ( Month, Year or Year are both appropriate)
  • The name of your degree

If you graduated more than 15 years ago, you should consider dropping your graduation date to avoid age discrimination.

Optional subsections for your education section include:

  • Academic awards (Dean's List, Latin honors, etc. )
  • GPA (if you're a recent graduate and your GPA was 3.5+)
  • Extra certifications
  • Academic projects (thesis, dissertation, etc. )

Other tips to consider when writing your education section include:

  • If you're a recent graduate, you might opt to place your education section above your experience section
  • The more work experience you get, the shorter your education section should be
  • List your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent and high-ranking degrees first
  • If you haven't graduated yet, you can include "Expected graduation date" to the entry for that school

Seaman Resume Relevant Education Example # 1

High School Diploma 2009 - 2011

Seaman Resume Relevant Education Example # 2

High School Diploma 2013 - 2015

3. Next, create a seaman skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an seaman resume

A coast guard is a maritime defence organization of a nation. The duties that a coast guard embraces may vary from one nation to the other. They are a strongly armed military establishment with customs and duties. A coast guard's tasks are different from the navy and the transit police. They are generally having the duty to carry search and rescue but without law enforcement authority.

Law enforcement is the task of certain members of the community who work together to uphold the law by identifying, preventing, rehabilitating, or prosecuting others who break society's laws and norms. The phrase refers to the police, the judiciary, and the correctional system.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is a medical procedure that involves chest compression to help a patient breathe. This artificial ventilation helps in keeping the brain function in place and regulates blood throughout the body. CPR is a lifesaving procedure that is used in emergencies.

General maintenance is the regular check-up and repairs of machinery, buildings, and other mechanical equipment. General maintenance is performed by repair workers who are skilled to handle the day-to-day defects produced in the machinery. General maintenance aims to make sure the items remain in the best operational conditions. Usually, a set of planned activities are performed regularly by an expert to monitor the maintenance.

Sailors primarily work at watercrafts such as commercial or private boats, naval, and crew ships.

A telephone system is a technology that enables wired or wireless telecommunication services. It is used for enabling electronic transmission of voice or data between distant parties. Landlines, mobile phones, smartphones, voice calling apps and software, all are examples of modern telephone systems.

Top Skills for a Seaman

  • Safety Equipment , 22.8%
  • Navigational Aids , 10.0%
  • Coast Guard , 9.2%
  • Law Enforcement , 9.2%
  • Other Skills , 48.8%

4. List your seaman experience

The most important part of any resume for a seaman is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of seamen" and "Managed a team of 6 seamen over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

  • Cleaned and put away dishes, took out the trash, and helped restock the food when needed

5. Highlight seaman certifications on your resume

Specific seaman certifications can be a powerful tool to show employers you've developed the appropriate skills.

If you have any of these certifications, make sure to put them on your seaman resume:

  • First Aid, CPR and AED Instructor
  • First Aid Certification

6. Finally, add an seaman resume summary or objective statement

A resume summary statement consists of 1-3 sentences at the top of your seaman resume that quickly summarizes who you are and what you have to offer. The summary statement should include your job title, years of experience (if it's 3+), and an impressive accomplishment, if you have space for it.

Remember to emphasize skills and experiences that feature in the job description.

How to have a good seaman CV – Template and Tips

blank resume format for seaman

Your seaman CV is your business card, it is the first glimpse of you that the shipowner gets: it highlights your specificities, your qualities as well as the arguments for choosing you in particular over another. It is therefore essential to carefully prepare your CV. ➡️ Here are our tips for a CV that makes a difference, along with a template that you can download and customise for free.

1. The CV: what is it for?

The purpose of a Curriculum Vitae (CV) is to give a concise account of your professional background, work experience and hobbies. It summarises in one page (or two maximum) everything you have done to get where you are today.

The aim of this page or pages is to make boat owners want to choose you as a sailor rather than someone else: you need to stand out from the crowd!

The nautical resume gives the first impression to your potential clients, so it is important to take care of it!

Spelling mistakes, for example, are not welcome.

2. The key elements of a seaman CV

A. titles and certifications.

The various qualifications and certifications you have obtained are essential to mention. They confirm your level of knowledge and expertise in the field. These titles certify to the boat owner that you have the necessary prerequisites to take charge of his boat and ensure that the mission is carried out in the best possible conditions.

Above all, filling in all your titles ensures that you are in compliance with maritime regulations, which require certificates and qualifications depending on the type of mission. It is therefore a guarantee of safety for the boat owner: a sailor who does not have the necessary diplomas to carry out a mission will not be able to benefit from multi-risk and damage insurance.

Here are some examples of recurring certifications:

  • Yachtmaster Commercially Endorsed
  • GMDSS CGO / CRO
  • Master 200 GT

If you have STCW 95 or STCW 10 certifications, it is also recommended to mention- them. They show that your titles are internationally recognised by the STCW Convention, and allow you to work on foreign flags.

Finally, for each title and certification, indicate the date of issue. Most STCW certificates are valid for 5 years and must therefore be regularly revalidated. Entering the date will ensure that the boat owner is aware of the validity of your certificates and anticipate their renewal.

⚠️ The fact that only one of your certificates has expired can lead to the invalidity of your certificate. For example, if your BST is expired, you no longer have the “Commercial Endorsement” on your Yachtmaster.

B. Skills and qualities

In addition to your various seaman certifications, it is important to list your technical and human skills. They are your added value: the boat owner will know that in the event of a problem, you’ll be able to react and take charge of the problem in order to find a solution.

These skills can be multiple:

  • Sailing manoeuvres
  • Engine manoeuvres
  • Maintenance
  • Marine knots
  • Rescue and safety
  • Customer relation
  • Foreign languages (French, Spanish, German, Italian, etc..)

Your interpersonal skills and good manners are also significant factors in the selection of a sailor. Indeed, for charter missions (cruising) or boat delivery missions, the qualities required will not be the same:

  • Adaptability
  • Sociability
  • Open-mindedness

C. Personal information

This part will gather more personal details about yourself (besides your obvious contact information: name, surname, email, phone number and adress) such as: your visas, vaccinations, tatooed or not, smoker or not, driver’s licence holder, etc..

These details also make a difference to boat owners. Some high-end cruising services may require a specific appearance and behaviour.

Since the Covid-19 health crisis, some cruising areas require new entrants to be vaccinated.

So to avoid any misadventures during the mission, these personal details need to be filled in.

On Capt’n Boat, it is important to have an anonymised seaman CV so that it can be validated.

Appearance is important! The photo you put on your CV will be the first image the client will have of you, choose it well! First impressions count a lot.

A well-framed photo, in good light with a clear and smiling face will give the client a feeling of confidence and create an easier and less formal bond.

In order to give your seaman resume a minimum of structure, is it advisable to write a short introduction of no more than 4-5 lines introducing yourself. It should be informative and attrative: talk about your goals, what you are looking for, etc..

The aim is to briefly detail who you are and what you aspire to in the near future.

B. Visually appealing

A CV that is too full and unstructured quickly demotivates the reader. To make shipowner want to take time to learn a little about you, an airy, orderly resume with uniform typography will make the task easier!

Your information should be quick, simple and clear to read. Prefer a short CV with selected information rather than a long one with irrelevant information.

In addition to the nautical resume, feel free to provide a cover letter, recommendation letter and interesting documents. (Example: for a steward(ess)/cook, providing a sample menu with photos is a great argument.)

For the boat owner, the choice of the seaman who will take charge of his boat will be based first and foremost on the study of his sailor resume. This first impression is therefore essential. A seaman CV without spelling mistakes, with a well-framed photo and structured content, will open the doors to the contract signing stages.

Be honest about your skills and experiences, to avoid finding yourself in an uncomfortable situation, to which you will not know how to react.

Of course you can also think outside the box in the choice of format of your CV, and express your creativity (as long as the main information is there.)

When it comes to creating a resume for an Able Seaman job in 2023, there are a few important factors to consider. The length, design, and format of your resume can greatly impact your chances of landing the desired position. Follow these guidelines to ensure your resume stands out from the competition:

An Able Seaman resume should ideally be one to two pages long. Keep in mind that recruiters often have limited time to review each application, so it's important to be concise and focus on the most relevant information. Aim to highlight your skills, qualifications, and experience in a succinct manner.

The design of your resume should be clean, professional, and easy to read. Avoid using overly elaborate fonts or graphics that may distract the reader. Stick to a simple and organized layout, ensuring that your contact information and headings are clear and prominently displayed.

When it comes to the format of your resume, there are a few options to consider. A chronological format is often preferred for Able Seaman roles, as it allows employers to easily see your progression and experience over time. However, if you have relevant skills and qualifications from various sources, a functional or combination format can also be effective.

When constructing your Able Seaman resume, there are several sections that are essential. These include:

  • Contact Information: Include your full name, phone number, email address, and current location.
  • Summary or Objective Statement: Provide a brief overview of your qualifications and career goals.
  • Skills: Outline your relevant skills, such as navigation, vessel maintenance, and emergency response.
  • Work Experience: Detail your previous roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments in the maritime industry.
  • Education: Include any relevant certifications, licenses, or degrees.
  • Training & Certifications: List any additional training or certifications that are applicable to the Able Seaman role.
  • References: Optionally, you can include references or mention that they are available upon request.

While these sections are essential, there are also optional sections that can have a significant impact on your resume. These optional sections include:

  • Objective Statement: If you choose to include an objective statement, make sure it aligns with the employer's needs and showcases what you can bring to the role.
  • Achievements: Highlight any notable accomplishments, such as successfully leading a team or implementing innovative safety measures.
  • Additional Skills: If you possess any unique or specialized skills, such as proficiency in multiple languages or expertise in specific equipment, consider adding this section.

When describing your experience on an Able Seaman resume, it is important to utilize the Context-Action-Result (CAR) framework to effectively communicate your contributions and accomplishments. Here are some relevant examples of bullet points using this framework:

  • Context: Served as a deckhand onboard a cargo vessel responsible for transporting goods across international waters.
