Supermarkets are important parts of our lives. Now that less and less people live in the country side and grow their own food, and more and more people live in cities and need food to be shipped to them, people could hardly survive without supermarkets. A cross section from all generations visits the supermarket at least once or twice a week. Some people even visit the super market once a day – sometimes because it is their social entertainment. Every super market has its own method of organization and arrangement. In order to make some observations about the uniqueness of supermarket organization, I decided to visit Vons – a well-known supermarket – a week ago. A little later I visited another popular supermarket: Ralphs. As I entered the two supermarkets I found certain things in each store that were similar. For example, there were carts outside next to the entrance doors of both stores, and the moment I stepped inside the doors of both stores I felt like I was inside a refrigerator. However, there were three major differences that I noticed upon walking through each store: the items that made up the displays that greet customers just inside the door, the type of people that were shopping in each store, and they way in which the isles were organized. The differences in just these three areas are proof that stores target specific markets. First impressions are always important and can be hard to forget. When I first entered Ralphs, I was greeted by a rather pleasant display of plants arranged on carts. However, when I walked through the door at Vons I was struck by how cheerful the artfully arranged profusion of flowers made the atmosphere. My eyes also were drawn to a stack of dark blue Pepsi boxes. A fundamental principle of marketing struck me then: marketers know that when people see a product everywhere they go they are likely to be subconsciously influenced into buying the product. I also realized that when many people go to a supermarket they either forget their shopping list or do some inspirational shopping, leading them to buy things that catch their eyes. Therefore, mixing a product into an attractive display that greets shoppers when they enter a store is an excellent marketing strategy. Vons was especially adept at employing this marketing strategy. People from all different generations need to go to the supermarket. However, every generation usually prefers a specific super market. At Ralphs, I found out that their customers come from all generations. Also, all the customers knew exactly what to buy. In Vons, though, I noticed that most of the customers were elderly. The organization of the store appealed to the elderly customers – it made it easy for them to find what they were looking for. For example, all of the health food is organized in one separate area, as are other categories of food such as the bread in the bakery onto the right of the store, and a little shop inside selling sandwiches and salads. I think these are some of the attributes that attract older customers. However, not all the customers are elderly: some of the customers are young college students from California State University, Northridge. Besides the brands of food sold in a store, the way that a super market organizes its products into isles is the most important thing that distinguishes one supermarket from the other. Vons had only thirteen isles while Ralphs that had fifteen. At Vons, I found that health food is located both in the far left and the far right of the store. I personally prefer that they keep the items all in the same area, but maybe they don’t want to remind people that other products are less healthy. I started from the left; I noticed that fresh meat, fresh seafood, and also the frozen burgers are next to vegetables and fruits. I walked all the way from the back of the super market, and I found on my left milk, more frozen food, and juices. Reaching the end of my tour I found next to the bread some fresh cheese. Starting from isle thirteen the items were full of school supplies, magazines, books, and gift cards. Between the isles thirteen and twelve there are bottles of water. Isle twelve is full cleaning stuff and some plates created for children. The next isle was for animal supplies and their needs. Isle ten was the pharmacy section, full of beauty products, medicines, toothpastes, and shampoo. Isle nine was my personal favorite isle, with its array of delicious chips and cookies. The next isle was full of juices and frozen foods such as macaroni, French fries, and burgers. Continuing on to the next isle, I also found frozen food everywhere with some ice cream. The next isle, which seems to appeal to a lot of people given the number of adults browsing in it, was full of alcoholic drinks. Isle five is full of Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Sprite, and other kinds of soft drinks. The next isle was for cooking oils and also sold salt and pepper. Isle three, two, and one are the best for people who love to cook: I found all the cooking supplies over there. The cash register is just between the entrance and exit, making is easy to find. On the other hand, Ralphs had a different organization. I found water in the middle with some chips. Starting from the isle fifteen, I saw vegetables on the left and sauces on the right. All the way back I discovered a lot of fresh food. Isle fourteen was full of tissues, magazines, glasses, and some shampoo. The next isle was full of cleaning powders mostly as well as some light bulbs. Isle twelve was for animal food as well as other pet supplies and some school supplies. Isle eleven and isle ten contained similar items: shampoos, pampers, and creams. Then isle nine and eight were full of Pepsi, Redbull, Monster, and alcoholic drinks. Isle seven was frozen food and ice cream. The next isle was full of frozen food as well, plus chocolates, hard candies, and bottled water. Isle five contained cookies, sliced bread, Cheez-Its, peanut butter, and strawberry jam. The next isle, isle four, was designated for kitchen supplies as well as salt and pepper. Isle three was the pharmacy isle, full of medicines. Isle two was for different kinds of sauces and some low priced frozen macaroni. The last isle I walked down, isle one, contained baked goods, some drinks, and all kind of cheeses. While all supermarkets have certain similarities, there are three particular differences between Vons and Ralphs. The items that made up the displays which greet customers just inside the door were different, the type of people that were shopping in each store varied, and they way in which the isles were organized was different. These are really important things in any supermarket, and I think Vons and Ralphs did a good job creating their supermarkets. I noticed that some products were put next to others in order to market them. I would make one recomnedation for these two stores: they should bring more Arabian, and Middle Eastern products to their customers, for California State University, Northridge has a lot of Arabian and Middle Eastern students. As I have mentioned before, Vons and Ralphs are both next to the California State University, Northridge. I think that they will continue to bring more customers into their stores in the future if they continue their good work.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay on online shopping/virtual shopping/e-shopping; with planning and model answer

This IELTS Writing Task 2 post is about ‘online shopping and its merits and demerits’ . Here, I’ve discussed the advantages and disadvantages of virtual/online/e-shopping and presented a model answer on this Task 2 question. This model answer can guide you to write an answer to any online shopping related essay.

Let’s have a look at the question we are going to discuss today.

The language of this task 2 question can be different in different exams.

Here’s another example of the same question:

An increasing number of people are buying what they need online.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for both individuals and companies to shopping online?

Nowadays, e-shopping or shopping online has an increasing trend among shoppers. It has both positive and negative sides. First, we need to make a plan for writing on this topic.

Here’s a short plan that may help you.

Planning and organisation:

Here is how I’ve planned the essay with a 4-paragraph structure:

• Introduction: topic + thesis (2 sentences can be sufficient): Introduce the topic – ‘online shopping getting more popular’. Then write a thesis on how you are going to show that there are some positives and negatives of the issue.
• Body paragraph on the reasons behind virtual shopping being so popular: You can write about straightforward ideas e.g. people get more convenience, and availability or choice of products. Give some real-life examples here.
• Body paragraph on the negative sides of online shopping: Again, present some very general ideas e.g. customers get cheated and people become more isolated. Give some real-life examples here too
• Conclusion: restate your ideas Online shopping has both advantages and disadvantages. You can give your personal opinion on how the disadvantages can be reduced.

Now let’s take a look at the model answer.

Model answer: expected band score – 7.5 to 8.0

In recent years, the rate of in-store shopping has plunged due to vast opportunities for buying different products including daily necessaries from hundreds of online stores. This essay will try to demonstrate chances such as convenience and product availability as the reasons behind the popularity of e-shopping whereas it will focus on swindling and isolation as the pitfalls of this issue.

Initially, the prime reason behind the popularity of e-shopping is convenience which can be easily understood from the thousands of virtual shops all over the world. To illustrate, people nowadays are busier than ever because of the fast pace of the world and they want to save as much time as they can for relaxation. Virtual shopping gives this magnificent prospect of time-saving and so people enjoy taking it. Besides, superstores sometimes run out of products in the precise moment when people need them which online shops rarely have this crisis. For instance, I needed a flat-screen monitor a few months ago but my local store had it out of stock. When I peeped into some online stores I found it easily on eBay.

Meanwhile, though shopping on the internet looks very promising, it is not without its setbacks. Many people, mostly the newcomers, regularly complain of getting tricked on virtual shopping and the rate of complaints is increasing at a faster rate. To explain, one of my friends has recently got swindled when he paid in advance for a smartwatch. Additionally, people often become isolated in their rooms through e-shopping which can affect their feelings and behaviour. As an example, a friend of mine started shopping online a couple of years ago even though the nearest superstore was only 500 metres away. His neighbours, nowadays, describe him as an ill-mannered and antisocial person which, needless to say, is the result of being home and becoming isolated from the outer world. 

In brief, virtual shoppers obtain greater benefits if compared to in-store shoppers. Converting such shopping to a stress-free experience, it is turning out to be progressively more convenient. However, as clients may sometimes get deceived and become cut off from the social world, concerned authorities should look into the matter cautiously. (360 words)

Tucker Carlson went to Moscow last week and had an absolute blast. He rode the subway and marveled at its clean cars, the fancy tilework in Kievskaya Station, and the lack of booze-drenched hobos. He went to a grocery store and was astonished by what ordinary people could apparently buy. He even managed to meet a local history buff and sit down for tea and conversation. Carlson, who had never previously visited Moscow, declared himself “radicalized” against America’s leaders by the experience. He didn’t want to live in Moscow, but he did want to know why we in America have to put up with street crime and crappy food when the supposedly bankrupt Russia provided such a nice life for its people, or at least those people not named Alexei Navalny .

My former Atlantic colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a “fool’s paradise,” but not all forms of foolishness are equal. Many commentators have guffawed at Carlson’s Russophilia and pointed out that Russia’s murder rate is roughly that of the United States, and that its citizens are dirt poor, about a fifth as wealthy per capita as the citizens of the United States overall. “I don’t care what some flagship supermarket in an imperial city looks like,” The Dispatch ’s Jonah Goldberg tweeted. “Russia is far, far poorer than our poorest state, Mississippi.” Bloomberg ’s Joe Weisenthal suggested that Carlson instead visit the grocery stores of the “10th or 50th” richest Russian cities, and see how they compare with America’s.

In 2019, I visited several large and small Russian cities, and I went grocery shopping at least once in each. Would you believe that Tucker Carlson is on to something? In Moscow (the largest) and St. Petersburg (No. 2), the flagship supermarkets are indeed spectacular. The Azbuka Vkusa branch next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow is more luxurious than any grocery store within 100 miles of Washington, D.C. Other branches in Moscow vary in quality, and they are usually smaller than American supermarkets. But to some extent that’s just a matter of culture: The U.S. has fewer supermarkets, but each one is big enough to feed the 82nd Airborne Division for a month; in Europe, supermarkets are more numerous but tiny.

Makhachkala (22), the capital of Dagestan, followed a similar pattern to Moscow. One supermarket downtown was amazing, the equal of an upscale supermarket in Washington or Dallas. On the outskirts the quality varied, but not drastically. Local residents were not eating soups made from grass clippings. In Murmansk (71), the cramped bodega near my rented flat had a good wine selection and enough fresh staple foods to prepare a different meal your mom would approve of every day of the week. Only in Derbent (134) did I start to wonder whether the bad old days of the Soviet Union were still in effect. But even that would be an exaggeration. In Derbent, for $15, you could get champagne and caviar with blini and velvety sour cream. If you want to flash back to Cold War communism, go to Havana. There the grocery stores stock only dust and mildew.

With apologies to Emerson, travel can disabuse you of foolish notions just as often as it plants them in your head. An idea ripe for dispelling among Americans at this particular moment is that life in Russia must suck because the frigid depression of the Cold War never ended. In those days ordinary citizens were spied upon and tortured and killed, and the shops were empty, save for substandard goods at prices few could afford. Now Russia is different. The state repression is much more limited, though no less brutal toward those who attract its attention. Until the Ukraine war added a huge category of forbidden topics, the main ones that you could get locked up for discussing were war in the Caucasus and the personal life and finances of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Most other topics were broachable, and you could whine all you liked about them.

Equally in need of updating are American expectations about Russian economic misery. Those whose visits to Russia stopped 20 years ago tend to have outdated views of the best the country has to offer. My visits started 24 years ago. Back then, I spent days at a time on the Trans-Siberian, crammed into railway cabins with little to do but talk with Russians and see how they lived. Life was not beautiful. The men busied themselves with crosswords and sullenly browsed pornography. When not in motion, I stayed with Russian friends in single-room flats that looked straight out of a New York tenement building 100 years ago. No one I met was starving, but women sometimes approached me in train stations hoping to rent out their homes or bodies, or to sell me family heirlooms. That type of desperation seems to have subsided, although I would be shocked if any of those people are able to buy the jamón ibérico at the Smolenskaya branch of Azbuka Vkusa yet. On the roads between the big cities, there are still villages so ramshackle that they look like sets from The Little Rascals . Evidence suggests that the Russian military’s frontline troops tend to come from these depressed and benighted lands, the places that really are stuck in the 20th century.

Certain aspects of life remain dismal even in the cities. My flat in Murmansk had surly drunks tottering outside its entrance, and its stairwell smelled like every cat, dog, and human resident had marked its territory there regularly since the Brezhnev era. But the playgrounds were decent, and you could get a delicious smoked-reindeer pizza at a cozy restaurant for $7. Remember, this is in a small, depressed Russian city—not somewhere stocked with goodies just in case an American wanders out of the lobby of the Radisson and needs to be impressed. The “useful idiots” of yesteryear were treated to fake Moscows, which evanesced as soon as the next Aeroflot flights took off. The luxuries of Moscow that Carlson sees, and that I saw, are not evanescent, and they are not (as they are in North Korea, say) a curated experience available only to those on controlled visits.

The stubborn belief that all good things in Russia must be illusory can in turn warp one’s analysis of the country, and in particular of Putin’s durability in power. After all, why would anyone remain loyal to an autocrat who delivered only hunger, penury, and the reek of cat piss? Putin rules by fear but not only by fear. Most Russians will tell you that Russia today is better than it was before Putin. They compare it not with the Soviet era but with the anarchy and decline of the 1990s. Life expectancy has risen, public parks are better maintained, and certain fruits of capitalism can be tasted by Russians of all classes. Who would risk these gains? Like every autocrat, Putin has ensured that his downfall just might destroy every good thing Russia has experienced in the past two decades. This risk is, from the perspective of regime continuity, a positive feature, because it keeps all but the most principled and brave opposition quiet, and content to shut up and enjoy their cheap caviar. Those like Navalny who object do not object for long.

Carlson’s videos never quite say what precisely he thinks Russia gets right. Moscow is in many ways superior to New York. But Paris has a good subway system too. Japan and Thailand have fine grocery stores, and I wonder, when I enter them, why entering my neighborhood Stop & Shop in America is such a depressing experience by comparison. Carlson’s stated preference for Putin’s leadership over Joe Biden’s suggests that the affection is not for fine food or working public transit but for firm autocratic rule—which, as French, Thais, and Japanese will attest, is not a precondition for high-quality goods and services. And in an authoritarian state, those goods and services can serve to prolong the regime.

I confess I still enjoy watching Carlson post videos of Moscow, wide-eyed and credulous as he slowly learns to love a country that I love too. I hope he posts more of them. One goes through stages of love for Russia, often starting with the literature and music, then moving to its dark humor and the personalities of its people, which are always cycling between thaw and frost. Inevitably one reflects on the irony that this civilization, whose achievement is almost without equal in some respects, is utterly cursed in others—consigned to literally centuries of misgovernment, incompetence, and tyranny. The final stage is realizing that the greatness of Russia is part of the curse, a heightening of the irony, as if no matter how much goes right, something is deeply wrong. Maybe when things go right, the more deeply wrong it is. Carlson seems to still be in one of the early stages of this journey.

The long Easter weekend means the major supermarkets will be changing their opening hours - so shoppers should be aware of when their local shop will be open.

Today (April 1) is Easter Monday, which is a bank holiday , and this means shop opening times may be different to normal. It is important to be aware of any changes, in case you need to run out for any last-minute essentials.

But keep in mind our guide below is only a rough indication of when stores will be open. You should check online using each store’s postcode checker tool to see the exact opening times of your nearest store.

Aldi stores in England and Wales opened from 8am to 10pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Its stores in England and Wales closed on Easter Sunday, but branches in Scotland remained open.

Aldi said its stores will open once again today, Easter Monday, but they will close at 8pm.

Most larger Asda stores opened 7am until 10pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, including its smaller Express convenience stores. Then on Easter Sunday, its larger supermarkets in England and Wales were shut.

Its stores in Scotland remained open on Easter Sunday, as did most Asda Express convenience stores. The majority of Asda shops will be open again today, Easter Monday, between 7am and 10pm.

Most Lidl stores were typically open between 8am until 8pm on Good Friday, and then from 8am until 10pm on Saturday.

Its shops were closed on Easter Sunday in England and Wales, however they remained open in Scotland . All stores will be open today, Easter Monday, and again, most say they will be open from 8am until 8pm.

M&S stores were open as usual on Good Friday and Saturday, with the majority open between 8am and 8pm. Most stores were closed on Easter Sunday in England and Wales, however, a small number of stores were open 9am-6pm.

Scotland stores remained open on Easter Sunday. Then on Easter Monday, most M&S stores will be open from 8am until 8pm. Again, check the opening times of your local M&S to see exactly when it will open this weekend.

Morrisons ' larger stores were open on Easter Friday, although some had reduced opening hours. Most shops were open from 7am until 10pm. Opening times then went back to normal on Easter Saturday.

Then on Easter Sunday, larger stores in England and Wales were shut for the day - but in Scotland, they remained open. Morrisons' smaller Daily convenience stores were also open. If you need to visit your local Morrisons today on Easter Monday, shops will be open again, although some will have shorter hours. We spotted most stores will be open until 8pm.

Sainsbury's

The majority of Sainsbury's stores opened 7am until 10pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Its smaller convenience stores were open from 7am to 10pm. Sainsbury's supermarkets in England and Wales were closed on Easter Sunday.

But stores in Scotland remained open on Easter Sunday, and convenience stores were open as usual from 7am to 10pm. On Easter bank holiday Monday, most Sainsbury's supermarkets will be open 8am and 8pm and convenience stores will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Tesco stores were open on Good Friday although some had adjusted opening times. For example, some stores that are open late in England and Wales closed earlier at 10pm, before returning to normal hours on the Saturday.

On Easter Sunday, all larger stores in England and Wales were closed, but its Scotland stores remained open. The vast majority of Tesco Express stores were open on Easter Sunday.

Tesco stores will be open on Easter Monday, but again, larger branches may be operating reduced hours. Express stores will be open as normal on Easter Monday.

Waitrose stores were open on Easter Friday and Easter Saturday. Some stores were open under reduced opening times on Easter Friday.

Then on Easter Sunday, stores closed in England and Wales. If you're in Scotland, stores remained open on Easter Sunday. You'll find Waitrose stores are scheduled to be open on Easter Monday, but again, some may have shorter hours.

Easter could be a disaster if you find yourself with no chocolate eggs to hide around the house, or with no sausage and eggs for a lazy Easter Monday brunch.

Knowing where to dart for last minute supplies is all you need to save the day.

But while you’re lounging around stuffing your face with chocolate, so too will many of the people who staff your favourite shops.

Are supermarkets and shops open on Easter Sunday?

The vast majority of supermarkets in England , Wales and Northern Ireland will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Any shop bigger than 280 square metres must be closed on Easter Sunday by law, according to government rules on retailers’ trading hours in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Scotland is the exception, where many stores will remain open, operating under Sunday trading hours.

Other exceptions are registered pharmacies selling only medicinal products, shops and metro supermarkets at service stations, and farm shops that sell primarily their own produce.

Easter Sunday supermarket opening times

• Aldi – all stores are closed.
• Asda – all stores are closed.
• Co-op – stores open as usual, mostly between 7am to 10pm. Hours may vary between stores. You can check your local one here .
• Iceland – all stores closed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Stores are open in Scotland.
• Morrisons – all stores closed.
• Lidl – all stores closed.
• Sainsbury’s – all big stores closed except in Scotland where they open in line with Sunday trading hours. Many Sainsbury’s Locals are open as usual from 7am to 10pm.
• Tesco – all large stores closed. Express stores are open as usual.
• Waitrose – most stores are closed, with a few exceptions, which you can view online . Shell and Welcome Break stores are open as usual.

Because Easter Monday is a regular Bank Holiday, there are no laws requiring stores stay closed.

Many supermarkets and shops will be open on Monday, but they might be operating under different hours to give employees an earlier finish or later start.

• Aldi – stores are open from 8am to 8pm. You can check individual store opening hours online .
• Asda – stores are open between 6am to 10pm. You can check your local store’s opening hours online .
• Co-op – stores open as usual, mostly between 7am to 10pm. Hours may vary between stores. You can check your local one using the online branch locator .

Are pharmacies open over Easter?

Anyone who has to take  medications  regularly will tell you how important it is to ensure your supply doesn’t run out.

It is best practice to be prepared for any and all situations, so if you know your refill is coming up it is advised to visit your pharmacy before the  bank holidays .

There is no set rule on pharmacies staying open over the Easter  bank holidays .

However, the  NHS website  has provided a list of pharmacies that will remain open.

These will be open for limited hours in order to help customers get any essential medicines or treatments.

What time will Morrisons open today?

Morrisons  observed special opening hours over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Stores were closed on Easter Sunday, but they will all be open between 7am and 8pm today.

M&S stores are open today

M&S’  stores will open as usual on Easter Monday, with the majority opening between 8am and 8pm.

Opening times  at M&S stores vary so it’s also always best to check your local store to avoid disappointment.

ASDA is open today

The following opening times apply to most of Asda’s stores across Easter:

• Thursday, March 28 – 7am-10pm
• Friday, March 29 – 7am-10pm
• Saturday, March 30 – 7am-10pm
• Sunday, March 31 – Closed
• Monday, April 1- 7am-10pm

However, make sure you check the times before you go to your local branch to avoid disappointment.

Are Greene King pubs open today?

As a result, it’s best to use its  online store locator  or call ahead for opening and closing times.

Stores are open between 7am and 10pm on Good Friday and open as normal on Easter Saturday.

John Lewis is open tomorrow

Luckily, all of  John Lewis’  stores will be open between 10am and 6pm on Easter Monday.

Some may even be open later than that.

Lidl’s  stores will be open as normal on Good Friday and Easter Saturday.

Stores in England and Wales will then close on Easter Sunday and reopen on Easter Monday.

The firm, made famous by its iconic  TV  ad jingle, has over 500 locations nationwide.

Of these, it has announced that just under 100 will be closed for part of the  Bank Holiday  Weekend.

OKC Thunder star Chet Holmgren hosts Nike shopping spree for local families with YWCA

OKC Thunder forward Chet Holmgren hosted a shopping spree for 10 families at the Nike Factory Store-Oklahoma City on March 11.

Holmgren partnered with YWCA Oklahoma City, a nonprofit organization that provides care and hope to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Each family received a $500 gift card.

"We are so ecstatic and excited about this," said Vianessa Lacey, one of the participants, in a video released by the Thunder on Friday. "We didn't know what to do with ourselves this morning."

After missing all of last season with a foot injury, Holmgren is making an impact on the court this season. The 7-foot-1 rookie is averaging 16.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.

But Holmgren is also making an impact off the court.

From hosting an annual Holmgren Family Thanksgiving dinner for foster families to opening a local community court in February, the 21-year-old forward continues to give back to his community.

"It's huge," Holmgren said. "I've been blessed in a lot of different ways in my lifetime. I'm just trying to pay that forward and pay that blessing onto other people. That's what it's all about."
