Some even work 24 hours a day or seven days a week.

Multitasking is the order of the day, as we struggle to fulfill our responsibilities for everyone in life. In this fight, we often forget to spare time for ourselves. The stress levels continue to build up until one day a major collapse may make us realize that in all this hectic activity, we have forgotten to take care of one important thing – our health.  

As we spend days shuttling between hospital and home, putting our body through one test after another, trying to find out what has gone wrong, we are forced to remember that ‘Health is indeed Wealth’.  

In earlier days, life was very simple. People worked for a stipulated time, often walked everywhere, ate more homemade food, did household chores, and enjoyed a healthy balance in life.  

Now people have cars and bikes to commute, so they walk less. With the demand for more working hours, people are awake till late at night and indulge in more junk food than home-cooked food. Modern equipment at home has reduced the labour work and increased dependency on this equipment.  People don’t have enough time to exercise or even get enough sunlight. Nowadays people are living very unhealthy lifestyles.  

Unhealthy living conditions have increased the contraction of people to various diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, hypertension, etc. This has alarming implications in the near future. So it is very important to focus on our health as much as we focus on our work. Moderation in food habits, daily exercise, and balanced work-life can surely make a big difference to our health and body. When a person stays mentally and physically fit, his actions and decisions are more practical and logical and hence he is more successful in life. Furthermore, good health has a direct impact on our personality.

It's crucial to consider how much self-control you have to keep a healthy lifestyle. Research reveals that changing one's behaviour and daily patterns are quite tough. According to the data, whether a person has a habit of smoking, drinking alcohol, doing drugs, or any other substance, it is extremely difficult to quit. A study found that 80% of smokers who tried to quit failed, with only 46% succeeding.

A healthy body has all the major components that help in the proper functioning of the body. The essential component is the state of physical health. Drinking plenty of water and a balanced diet is also very important for your body.  If you violate the basic laws of good health, like working late hours, ignoring physical exercise, eating junk food, it will lead to various ailments like hypertension, heart attacks, and other deadly diseases.

They are constantly using these technological items, oblivious to the fact that they may harm their health. Teenagers are frequently discovered engrossed in their electronic devices, resulting in mishaps. 

The usage of electronic devices frequently results in anxiety and hostility. Excessive usage of these products has been linked to cancer, vision loss, weight gain, and insomnia.

We need to have a good lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, engaging in daily exercise, breathing fresh air and drinking clean water, maintaining excellent posture, getting adequate sleep and relaxation, and keeping ourselves clean in order to preserve good health. If one is unhealthy, one will have problems with their health or other aspects of life.

Health was once defined as “the ability of an organism to function normally”. However, the definition of health has evolved over time. Being healthy does not necessarily mean physical fitness. Rather, it refers to a state of health, including emotional, mental and social stability. Health is the source of true wealth. A healthy body contains key elements that are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Physical health is the first important factor. Physical well-being is the state of having a healthy body free from disease. People tend to live longer when their bodies are healthy.

A balanced diet is the best way to keep your body healthy. Consuming the right amount of nutrients you need gives you better control over your physical health. Regular exercise is the next very important factor. Don't forget to exercise, even for 10 minutes, to keep your body in shape. Eating junk food all the time is not a good idea. Emerson’s quote, cited by Harvard economist and health expert David E. Bloom in Finance and Development ’s lead article, reminds us that good health is the foundation on which to build—a life, a community, an economy.­

Humanity has made great strides, developing vaccines and medical techniques that allow us to live longer, healthier lives. Other developments—such as increased access to clean water and sanitation—have helped beat back long-standing ills and pave the way for better health.

But the story is not one of endless progress. As we went to press with our December issue of Finance and Development, the world was dealing with the worst outbreak of the Ebola virus on record, a grim reminder of our vulnerability and of the distance yet to go. And, though not often the subject of headlines, the great disparities in health—evident, for example, in the a 38-year gap in life expectancy between Japan (83 years) and Sierra Leone (45 years)—raise issues of equity and point to the need to press forward on multiple fronts.

In this issue of F&D, we’ve assembled a lineup of accomplished authors to look at global health from a variety of angles. They look at today’s health systems—the amalgam of people, practices, rules, and institutions that serve the health needs of a population—and at the economics behind them.

In his broad-ranging article, Bloom underscores the role good health plays in an individual’s or household’s ability to rise, or stay, above the poverty line. Several articles explore health care spending: Victoria Fan and Amanda Glassman examine  the shift in public health spending from central governments to states and cities; and Benedict Clements, Sanjeev Gupta, and Baoping Shang take a look at whether  the recent slowdown in public health spending in advanced economies is permanent.­

We offer several reports from the front lines: health ministers from Colombia  and  Rwanda discuss major challenges in their jobs, and the CEO of a pharmaceutical company looks at impediments to developing drugs to fight emerging diseases . Another special feature considers four major health threats of the 21st century .­

  • Keeping your body hydrated is a must. We should drink seven to eight glasses of water throughout the day. This is beneficial for our internal organs and also for our skin.
  • A balanced meal is greatly required for leading a healthy life. Our entire metabolism depends on it. You should eat fresh fruits and green vegetables. You should also include supplements of high protein, vitamins, and minerals in your diet. Nutritious food helps you fight against diseases.
  • Skipping meals is not a good practice. Avoid excessive dieting. People these days tend to strain themselves with extreme diets. This may lead to heavyweight loss and severe conditions like anorexia.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol, cigarettes or drugs. They take a toll on your mental health and can also destroy your lungs and liver.
  • Good hygiene is equally important. Living in an unhealthy environment lowers your immunity and makes you prone to ailments. Thus, cleanliness is vital for maintaining a healthy life. An adequate amount of sleep is required for our body to function properly. You must sleep at least six to eight hours a day.

Regular taking a bath, washing clothes is another good habit which may prevent one from being affected by any serious illness. Food habit is another part which should be taken into account to leave lively and jovial. Junk food adds spicy food may not help to build a strong body and mind. According to the Gita, food habit matters a lot in the formation of a person’s personality.

The people who are prone to fresh and pure food grow as Swastik and those who like spicy food along with non-veg, grow as Rajasik and while others are interested in decayed and stale food, they are known as tamarisk to mask. So a person’s intellectual growth depends on his food habit which ultimately leads to his all-around development. The mere absence of ailment may not lead to a happy or healthy life of him. This, in order to be healthy on, has to be mentally, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy.

As per the data, when a person habitual of smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or any other, so it’s very difficult for them to rid of it, it is shown through the research that 80 percent of smokers who tried to give up, got the unsuccessful result, only 46 percent on them get rid of it. To emphasize, the self-control motto, a “Take Control Campaign” comes into the role.

Most infectious diseases, airborne diseases kill millions of poor people, lack clean food, water, and proper sanitation. Unavailability of the proper healthcare system for them, not even took the vaccination for their children. The government should take necessary steps for the development, by reduction of poverty, improving quality of food and water, and also provide proper sanitation, it can safe millions of lives and also stop the spread of many air-borne diseases, leprosy, etc.

Environmental factor affects health: there is various health-related illness, for example, asthma, malaria, typhoid, depression, pulmonary diseases, etc. To some extend human life is responsible for environmental hazards, for an instance, the production of food by using pesticides and fertilizers damages the environment, by eating these chemicals filled food is the main reason for causing cancer, and by deforestation, pollution increases which is the major cause of asthma, many heart problems, and there are so many examples are present.

How to Improve Health

One small step will change the daily routine quality of life and improves well-being.

  • by avoiding processed junk food,
  • improve your gut health by including probiotics foods like yogurt and lots of fibres, which work as a fuel
  • drink sufficient water daily it not only burns calories, but also increases metabolism,
  • eat more vegetables and fruits, enrich with prebiotics, vitamins, minerals
  • minimise the use of salt and sugar, causes hypertension, diabetes respectively.
  • Eat saturated food, which leads to increase the good cholesterol level i.e. HDL
  • Take quality of sleep: deprivation of sleep can affects on physical and mental performance, also leads to loss of appetite, trouble in concentration and thinking, mood swings because of frustration

  • Stay hygienic: personal hygiene is important, to become fresh and infections free, the basic hygienic techniques daily like bath regularly, washing hands frequently, trim nails etc.

Now the world takes a step towards modernization, now there are health policies that come into the role, everyone aware of health insurance plans which save people financially in their critical situations of health. Nowadays, people spend lots of money on medical advisors, various doctor consultations, to take better care of their health.

So always care for health, as you care for wealth because health is wealth.

Next to life itself, good health is the most precious gift and is necessary for a purposeful existence. 'Sound mind in a sound body' is an old saying. Healthy persons can work for long hours without getting tired. They can enjoy all the pleasures of life, whereas unhealthy persons can't. The world has no charm for them. They are always worried due to their physical complications. Wealth has no importance for them. To keep good health no money is needed. It can be achieved only through our efforts and proper health care. We can maintain good health only if we are aware of various factors which affect our health. There are certain things which are essential for keeping our body free from diseases. Nutritious food comes first. We should take only that food which has nutritious value. Some regularity in life are also important for good health. People don’t even have time to eat proper meal for a day because of their work and timings. They don’t have time to cook at home and so rely on fast foods or outside foods, knowing it is unhealthy. People still get food from outside because they do not have any other option.

In old days people used to eat a lot at the same time they used to walk miles for going to work or had public transport, even work in offices was all manual. But now people have their own vehicles due to which they walk less, office jobs have become dependent on computers and everything can be done on finger tips, due to which people spend more time sitting in front of computers thus ignoring any physical activities.

People of all age groups right from school kids to old people have become so much busy and addicted to technology that they spend hours sitting in front of computer, TV or mobiles, thus staying away from physical activities. They keep on munching all junk food to stay full and avoid hunger.

We see so many diseases around. Words like diabetes, cholesterol, BP, Heart diseases or even cancer have become common scenario, even many youngsters are suffering from these problems. A healthy person is considered as most lucky person on this earth.

Although a person is very wealthy, he must be having lakhs or millions in his bank account, but having a good health is boon. It is the most precious wealth which no one can take away from you.

Without a proper and good health, you cannot enjoy anything. You cannot travel happily, you cannot eat what you like, you have lots of restrictions on you. Once you loose your health you have almost lost the battle of life. There is no enjoyment and happiness as before. You may be cured but it is not 100%, even if you are cured, you have some restrictions in order to maintain your health or you have to be careful that you are suffering once again. This would make you dull and boring in all aspects such as financial, social, mental and physical. You are not able to do what you like and how you like, and are always   depressed and stressed.

In order to maintain a good health, it is always essential to maintain a proper diet. Try to consume home made fresh food. We see many people saying that home made food is boring, but very less people realise that is the most healthy food. The food cooked at home is hygienic, fresh and made with clean hands and ingredients. There isn’t any adulteration or dirty things in it.

One should consume all types of fresh vegetables and fruits, try to buy vegetables from a proper store, preferably organic vegetables and fruits as they do not have any pesticides or insecticides in them. They are pure and fresh and do not have any chemicals.

Avoid buying every food item shown in advertisements. Just eating right and healthy food would not suffice, along with this, one should always involve oneself in exercises, yoga, mediation or at-least walking. This would help to stay fit and active.

Just eating and sitting would make one to accumulate body fat and this would lead to many problems. Doing some sort of physical activity would burn your body fat and cholesterol and help you stay fit and healthy.

The main culprit of unhealthy life is laziness and bad habits. There is no harm in eating fast foods, but should consumed in limited quantity or once or twice in a month. Even if you are eating anything which is high in cholesterol doing some exercise would burn that cholesterol and it is not accumulated in body.

By maintaining a good health you are active and happy, you are not stressed about your future and have   a positive attitude towards life. Ignoring your health at young age and later repenting for it doesn’t make any sense.

One should always make it a habit to have a good, healthy and stress free lifestyle. It is easy to say to have stress free lifestyle but hard to maintain, one should try his best to live life without stress, proper planning and concentration would make it easier.

Practicing yoga regularly would also help you to live relive from stress. Parents must encourage kids to play and do some physical activities like running, jogging, cycling or even dancing. This would help them take a break from studies, relax and have a fresh mind.

Kids should be given a proper healthy and home made food which includes lots of green vegetables and fruits. This will have amazing benefits on their health. People of all age groups should practice these things in their life to have a proper health and that is the biggest wealth of human beings.

Can you talk about how you make sense of those seemingly disparate findings about the connection between wealth and happiness and well-being?

Meir Statman : That famous study is by Danny Kahneman and Angus Deaton, both Nobel Prize winners. And what they found was that emotional well-being levels off at $75,000 a year of income. That is, people who earn less than that of course are more sad than people who earn more. But earning double of $75,000 still makes you sad and frustrated—that is, even people [who] earn more money are frustrated any day because a colleague got a raise, and they did not, or the kid misbehaves, or whatever it is. But they found that evaluative well-being increases without limit with income. And so, earning $100,000 makes you enjoy higher evaluative well-being than earning $75,000, and $200,000 is more than $100,000. What psychologist Matthew Killingsworth found more recently is that even emotional well-being goes up beyond $75,000 a year, that experience well-being increases without limit. And what you found is that what Kahneman and Deaton asked people is to think about how they felt yesterday.

Well, how they felt yesterday might not be how they feel right now. And what he did was to ask people to keep an iPhone and he would ask them questions. They would come at random points and ask them, how do you feel right now? And that let him find that people who earn more money enjoy higher-experienced well-being at higher income. And you can see why that is—people who earn more money simply do not have the pressures, the frustrations of people who earn less. But there are diminishing returns in the sense that an extra $100,000 on top of $1 million adds less to that well-being than $100,000 added to another $100,000. So, in other words, money matters. And anyone who tells you that is all about friendship, they just forget that friendship is a wonderful thing. But even with friendship, you need money. I was reading about millennials and Gen Zers who are getting married, and people say, “I would have loved to join in your wedding, but I just don’t have the $600 or more dollars that are required to travel and stay at a hotel and so on.” So even for friendship, you need money.

How Social Capital Works Differently at Different Levels of Wealth

Amy Arnott : Another interesting thing related to what you write about in the book is how social capital works differently for people at different levels of wealth. So, basically, the idea is that less wealthy people need to rely on their social networks more for day-to-day life, for things like babysitting if something comes up or driving their kids to school, versus people with more assets. Can you talk about that and how that works?

Statman : If you are, say, lower-middle class or working class or just poor, you need to go to the doctor. You don’t have a car. Uber is expensive for your budget. You might ask a friend or a neighbor to drive you. That friend might reciprocate in the same way babysitting for you and so on. So, these are more tangible kinds of help. If you have more money, of course, you need to go to the doctor. Either you have a car or you can order an Uber, but you still need friends, although that friendship can be broader and shallower. For example, if you are an executive and you lose your job, you’ll have contacts with other people, perhaps classmates from college who are also executives in other companies. You can reach out and ask for advice and perhaps pointers to openings. If you have to send a kid to college and you want them to go to a particular kind of college, you probably know some academics who can advise you about this particular university or generally how to apply. And so, the friendships among the people who are well off tend to be broader but shallower, and shallow friendships can be very, very useful. You don’t necessarily need a heart-to-heart talk with that old classmate to get a pointer to a new job or to a university or any of the other things that are more of a concern for people with higher levels of wealth.
