The first day at school is exciting and, at the same time, a struggle for young children. All those days where they woke up, played and slept as they wished were now going to end. Undoubtedly, they are enthusiastic about going to school with a new bag and books, but they also have to make every effort to put away the feelings of missing home. If children cry on the first day of school because they miss their parents, the memories of school days are what make them nostalgic on their last day. Such is the impact created by school days on children that they find it hard to move on to the next phase of life. The short essay on school days will describe what makes school life the best, and children can write an essay based on this guide.

Importance of School Life

Once children start going to school, it is the place where they will spend most of their time for over 14 years. So, it is natural that they feel nostalgic about school whenever any mention of it is made. Moreover, a strong bond is formed between other students, and this friendship is sure to last for many years.

School days are also the best days to gather knowledge as well as learn basic etiquettes and skills, which make children better people. With lessons, assignments, sports day , games, and cultural events, school days are filled with many activities that help in the development of their character, mind and body. Along with teaching right from wrong, school days also instil good habits in children. Let us see an experience about school life in this school days essay.

My School Days

I remember my school days being jovial and fun while learning many lessons about life. Even though I was able to acquire knowledge from textbooks, it was the lessons of friendship, teamwork, hard work, discipline, and sharing that I learnt outside the classroom that remained close to my heart. My school days usually began by running off to the classroom before the first bell, and I would fight with my friends to sit in the first row of the class.

I was an average student during my school days, and I had great fun studying as well as participating in many events and activities at the school. While I enjoyed sports day, annual day and literary fests, I also liked studying in labs as I was able to perform many experiments and projects. The short essay on school days will not be complete without talking about the role of friends in school life.

Each year, I got new friends and teachers with whom I shared my dreams, doubts and worries. There were days when we studied together in the library and days when we asked the teachers to let us go out to play. Along with playing silly pranks on others, we used to go to the school canteen and get hot puffs and sweets as birthday treats. We also shared our lunch boxes and tiffins and complimented the food made by our mothers. My school days were filled with such happy memories, and I am grateful to my school for shaping me as a good student.

Best Things About the School Life for Students

School Life is the best time of our life as we make new friends, learn new things and build our career there. School time is the only time which we enjoy most, and when we enter college, we always miss our school life. School life teaches us lots of new things and prepares us to face all the challenges of life. I love my school life and really enjoy it. I have lots of friends, and all my teachers love me. I love my school and enjoy going there every day to meet my friends and learn new things.

Everyone keeps on saying that school life is the best time of your life. When listening to these phrases from their elders, the school students think about what is good about this life. All we do in the entire day is to attend the classes and to do the homework. But once school life gets over, the students realise that school life was the best time of their life.

Apart from learning great things in school, you make new friends, play different sports and create memories for the rest of your life. The students also learn many life skills like teamwork, good manners, etc., and understand what they want to become in their life.

About My School and School Life

I study in the reputed private school in my city, and I am glad to be a student of this school. My school is one of the most renowned schools in my town. It is very beautiful and huge. My school has all the facilities for sports, study and other activities. Built-in a three-storey building, it is a Co-Ed and Senior Secondary School having Science, Arts and Commerce stream. The atmosphere at my school is delightful. We have a huge playing ground where we all students play different games like Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, etc. We have a separate Basketball and Tennis court, as well as a small and beautiful garden for kids.

The students practice these sports every day. The school also has a big swimming pool and sports area for indoor games. In this area, the students can play Table Tennis and Chess. There is also a big skating rink. Different physical training teachers train us for all these sports. These sports not only keep us fit but also increase our stamina and coordination.

School life is not just limited to studies and sports. There are also other activity rooms such as the music room, art room, and dance room. The Art room is a big hall with lots of colourful charts and various types of paints. The students can portray their imagination and can create beautiful art here. Dance and music are also very important in school life as they help the students express themselves in a new manner. The different movements in dance help the students in unwinding themselves.

My school has a big library where we all read different kinds of books, novels and comics. Apart from the library, my school has well-equipped scientific labs where we all practise various experiments of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I have learned a lot of things in these labs. My school also has a big computer lab with trained technical staff that help us to learn everything about computers. I love playing on the computer and learning new things in the computer lab. In the computer lab, the students learn about using MS Word and PowerPoint. The computer lab is also called the ICT lab. The ICT teacher teaches the students about the internet and how to use it safely.

All the staff at my school are very polite, educated and experienced. Our teachers not only teach us but also prepare us for various competitions, and every year, my school wins many prizes in various competitions. I have even represented my school in a hockey championship and scored the second position.

The classrooms are big and decorated beautifully with different artwork done by the students. Various projects and models are kept in the classroom for the students to keep on revising their concepts. The teachers use smartboards, and every day a new word is taught to enhance the students’ vocabulary. Every day one student presents the ‘Thought for the Day’. These positive thoughts keep us motivated.

All the teachers at my school are very dedicated and punctual. They always teach us discipline and ask us to come to school on time. Our teachers love us, and they teach us in a very simple and easy way. Whenever we fail to understand anything, they try to make us understand it again without shouting at us. They give equal attention to all the students, and that is why my school has an excellent academic record.

The teachers are well qualified. They use different techniques to teach us the concepts. The atmosphere in the school is fun-filled and fruitful at the same time. The school’s entire staff, from the security guard to the teachers, is very helpful and polite.

We learn many life skills also in school. Discipline, hard work, and punctuality are some of them. During sports classes, we learn teamwork and work together to win.

The best part of my school is its auditorium where all the school events and competitions take place. Our school auditorium is one of the best auditoriums in the town with a great sound and light facility. It is fully air-conditioned with lots of seats. Every year, my school organises an annual cultural festival which lasts for two days. Many cultural events take place within these two days like singing, dancing, debate competition, etc. I love to participate in a poem writing competition every year, and many times I have won prizes as well. Every year, the toppers of our school get awarded on this annual cultural day and we all students love to participate in various events of the annual cultural day.

We also have school assemblies in our Auditorium. Sometimes the students from other schools come and participate in the different competitions organised in our schools. These events are called inter-school competitions. These events are very good as we get to learn new things from other students and make many new friends.

Apart from the annual cultural day, my school is famous for organising one of the biggest annual sports meets. I love this annual sports meet because sports are my favourite. In this annual sports meet, various sports competitions are organised, and almost 50 schools participate in these competitions and win multiple titles. Me, my friends, and our seniors also participate in these competitions and make our school proud by winning in them. My school has great teachers, excellent faculty and all the facilities that one student needs to excel in his/her life.

The biggest reason behind the success and fame of my school is our Principal Sir. He is 50 years old, yet very active and disciplined. He has an attractive personality, and his knowledge is commendable. He loves all the students and always spare some time from his busy schedule to monitor the progress of all the students. I admire his personality and principles. He always encourages us to take part in various extracurricular activities, and it is the result of his support & dedication that the students of my school always perform better in all the competitions. We all are fortunate to have him as our Principal.

Principal sir awards the students who participate and win in different cultural and sports events. He has a good memory and remembers the name of every child. The students feel proud when Principal sir calls them by their names.

After each term, assessments are also being conducted in the school. The teachers prepare us for these assessments, and the results are also shared with the parents. The assessment is a good system as students understand the learning gaps and can work on them. The teachers are very helpful as they assist the students wherever it is required.

I love my school and my school life. Every day I learn new things here and enjoy it with my friends. All my teachers love me and always support me. I have learned discipline and punctuality from my teachers, and it will help me a lot in my future. I am proud to be a student at this school, and I will always miss my school after leaving it. My school life has taught me many things and given me some best friends who will be my friends forever. I wish all the success to my school and love everything about my school life.

The different experiences which the students get in school life help them to become better human beings. When they leave school, they are not just taking the memories with them, but they take many friends, a career and good manners for life. It is the first place where the students come out of their family circles and create a new one with their teachers and friends.

One should also remember that everyone is not privileged enough to get an education. If one gets this opportunity, then be grateful and work towards being a better human being. Cherish your school life and stay motivated.

My School Essay 500 Words

The place where children as the leaders of tomorrow study and where the future of the nation is shaped are called schools. Education is an essential weapon for tomorrow, so the good schools of today are important for the best future of a nation. Schools are the center of learning where we attend classes on various subjects, interact with the teachers, get our queries

answered, and appeared in exams. In my school, learning is more like a fun activity, because of the extra-talented teaching staff.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life. I will always be thankful to my friends, teachers, and the staff of my school, for making it such a comfortable and Educational place of learning.

My best day at school started with a surprise. As I entered, I saw decorations everywhere. It was our annual function day!

Special Assembly

Our special assembly had fun games and dances. I even won a game, which filled me with joy.

Annual Function

The function was full of performances. I played the lead in our class play and received applause.

Winning Moment

The best moment was when I received an award for the best student. I felt proud and happy.

End of the Day

The day ended with a grand feast. It was truly my best day at school.

250 Words Essay on My Best Day at School

Introduction.

Every day at school brings new experiences, shaping us for what we become in life. However, one particular day stands out in my memory: the day I won the state-level debate competition.

The Preparation

The day started with a sense of anticipation. I had spent weeks preparing for the debate, researching and refining my arguments. I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as I stepped onto the school bus, my mind filled with the points I planned to articulate.

At the competition, I was up against the best debaters from other schools. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, making the event a rich tapestry of thoughts and ideas. As I waited for my turn, I could feel the weight of the occasion, but I also felt ready.

The Triumph

When I finally began speaking, the words flowed naturally. I made my arguments with conviction, challenging the opposing viewpoints with well-researched facts and logical reasoning. The applause that followed my speech was deafening. I knew I had made an impact, but the best was yet to come.

The Best Moment

The moment of triumph came when the judges announced the winners. Hearing my name as the state champion was an indescribable feeling. I was ecstatic, but more than that, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. All the hard work and preparation had paid off.

That day at school was the best because it taught me the value of hard work and the thrill of achievement. It was a testament to the power of preparation, determination, and belief in oneself. It was my best day at school, not just because I won, but because I experienced the joy of striving for something and achieving it.

500 Words Essay on My Best Day at School

Every student’s journey is marked by memorable experiences, days that stand out among the mundane routine of school life. Among these, my best day at school remains etched in my memory, not because of any extraordinary event, but due to the profound impact it had on my personal growth and understanding of the world.

The Unexpected Day

The day started like any other, with the usual morning assembly and classes. However, the real twist came when our literature teacher announced an impromptu debate. The topic was “Technology: A Boon or Bane for Society?” I’ve always been a bit of an introvert, preferring the company of books over people. The idea of standing in front of the class and speaking was daunting, to say the least.

Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

With a racing heart and trembling hands, I decided to participate. I was allotted the side arguing that technology is a boon. Despite my initial anxiety, I started researching the topic, focusing on how technology has revolutionized healthcare, education, and communication.

As I was preparing my arguments, I realized that my fear of public speaking was holding me back from expressing my thoughts. This revelation was a turning point, pushing me to confront my fear head-on.

The debate started, and one by one, students presented their views. The room was filled with nervous energy, excitement, and intellectual stimulation. As my turn approached, my heartbeat quickened. But I reminded myself of the research I had done, the arguments I had prepared, and the desire to overcome my fear.

As I started speaking, my initial nervousness gradually faded. My arguments flowed smoothly, and I could see my classmates nodding in agreement. The feeling was exhilarating. I had not only successfully presented my views but also engaged in a meaningful dialogue with my peers.

The Aftermath

When the debate ended, I was flooded with a sense of accomplishment. My teacher appreciated my arguments and the courage I showed by participating despite my fear. My classmates, too, congratulated me, their words of praise boosting my confidence.

That day was my best at school because it taught me an invaluable lesson: stepping out of one’s comfort zone is essential for personal growth. It made me realize that our fears and insecurities should not limit us from exploring new avenues. Instead, they should motivate us to push our boundaries and evolve.

In retrospect, it wasn’t just a debate; it was a stepping stone towards becoming a more confident and expressive individual. The experience shaped my perspective on fear and self-growth, making it a day I will always cherish. The best day at school, therefore, may not be about winning a competition or achieving academic success; it might be about overcoming personal challenges and growing as an individual.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

The memories of our school are always precious to us. When we grow up and leave our schools, we still remember those beautiful days. School gifts us with friends, good teachers, studies, manners, and also lots of happiness.

There is no one who does not enjoy going to school. And the best part of school life is the first day of school. As little children, we generally cry when we go to school. We do not understand everything happening there. Our parents take us there. Often we have to give an admission test for that school. But slowly we make new friends and start enjoying our school days.

Short Essay on First Day of School in 200 Words

School gives us one of the best memories of our lives. We will realize this after leaving our school and going for higher education. For a long period of our life, we spend time in our school. So it soon becomes our second home. Perhaps, the most important day in our life is the first day of our school. We get into that building for the first time.

All of us cry when we get into school. It happens because we do not want to leave our parents and house. For the time, school seems to be a different place. There are new people, new teachers, new friends, big classrooms, benches, and chairs. We get a pile of books and copies when we get into our school. But soon we start adjusting. We no longer cry we go to school. We wait to meet our friends. We come across our teachers. They start loving us just like our parents.

We feel home-like when we stay in school. As students, we have to follow rules. That we obediently follow. We enjoy our first school prayers and the assembly. The first day of our school remains like a precious memory. We do not forget that day and enjoy sharing it with everyone.

Short Essay on First Day of School in 400 Words

School gives us the best time of our lives. Everything seems very easy to understand. We learn, study, and also enjoy ourselves in school. School life gifts us with friends, good teachers, and good memories. And the best moment of our lives is the first day of school. Everything seems new and different. Yet it is a treasure of our lives. We can never forget the days of our school, especially the first day.

The first day of school is perhaps the most important. It is not only the beginning of our studies but also the start of a new life. We all remember how on the first day we had cried. We hated going to school back then. We thought someone will take us away from our parents and house. So parents always stay with us on our very first day. We all have to sit for an admission test. We prepare the basics back at home and then give the examination.

All children at the age of three are admitted to primary schools. Once our examination gets over, we get admission into the new school. We feel happiest as we get new school bags, books, copies, and other things. The first journey to school is an exciting one. Holding the hands of our parents, we attend the school.

We cry as the teacher takes us to our classes. But soon we see many little children sitting in the class. And we forget our tears. Soon we start making friends and enjoying the classes together. We share our tiffins and learn the habit of sharing. We come across some new people. We learn to call them teachers. They teach us in our class and we enjoy sitting with our friends and learning the same things.

As the first day comes to an end, we hurry outside to our parents. We feel happy as we share the details of our first class. From that moment onward, we never cry to go to school. But we wait every morning to visit school and meet our friends. The best part of school life is having friends to play with.

Everything remains very soft and innocent. From the first day, the teachers and the school building become very dear to us. So just like the first day, we cry when we leave our school. We all get to go for higher education. We all do our jobs. But throughout our lives, the school remains a great memory. The first day of school is the biggest gift of God.

In this session above, I have tried to discuss the entire context in a very simple language that all kinds of students can easily understand. A school is a primary institution where children go to learn new ideas and habits and receive education while making new friends on the journey. I was admitted to the school when I was 5 years old. It was a primary school, and I was really scared to attend it as it was the first time I had to spend a long time without my parents outside the home. On the first day, I woke up early as it was morning school, wore the new uniform, and reached school with my parents. They dropped me off at the Headmistress’s office, from where I was taken to my class. As I entered my class, I saw a few high benches and low benches where other students were sitting on. I sat on the third bench, where I made a friend who later became my best friend. I loved my first day at school and still cherish the memories.

The first day of school is very different for every kid. Some cry, some get excited, and some feel reluctant about the new environment. A long essay should capture these various emotions and feelings in a streamlined manner. Here is an example of writing an essay on the first day at school for class 3.

My Classroom

On my first day at school, I woke up early and dressed in my new uniform. I went to the school premises with my parents. The premises was huge with green lawns and a two-storey-ed building with nine rooms. I went to the Headmistress’s office and was later taken to my classroom by our class teacher. It was a small yet airy room with some benches and a blackboard. I sat on the third bench where another student was seated, who later became my best friend. Our class teacher was very friendly, and we got to introduce ourselves. I learnt a new alphabet and played with my new friends. We were given the school tour on the first day.

We were shown restrooms, a swing area, a dance room, etc. Though I enjoyed my first day, it wasn’t easy to stay so long without my parents. I missed them terribly. My mother packed my favourite snack for lunch, and I missed her badly then. I remember many kids crying and teachers trying to soothe them and pamper them with toffees. We were given some sheets and colours to enjoy colouring. I recall I was given a butterfly to colour. My friend got a crocodile, and I saw another kid colouring a bird. It was such a fantastic activity. Another activity happened that day; we had to tell the teacher the one thing we instantly liked about the school. I said swings, and my friend said colours. It was a memorable day that I cherish even today.

Introduction To Teachers And Friends

Our class teacher introduced us to other teachers, and we were asked to introduce ourselves. Teachers made us sit alphabetically. Luckily my friend’s name also started with S, like me, so we sat together. We played fun Pictionary games. We were asked to perform our hobbies and were given toffees. It was amazing to meet my best friend, who shared the same hobby, dancing with me. The teacher also read a beautiful story to us. I really loved the overall experience.

This essay will help kids to grow their research, persuasion and analytical skills. Essay writing helps improve writing skills, demonstrate your intelligence, gain knowledge in multiple niches, improve critical and analytical abilities, and improve communication skills.

My parents woke me up in the morning and told me to get ready soon. I was also very excited to see my new school, so I got ready within twenty minutes.

Since it was my new school, I wore a brand new dress. My parents also wore new clothes so that we could make a good impression on the teachers.

Finally, we all had breakfast and left for school by car. After about seven minutes we reached the school.

2. Building, crowd and admission process –

As I got down from my car, I saw a three-story building with St. Peter Public School written on it. The building of the school was more attractive than that of my previous school.

As soon as I entered the school with my parents, I saw a huge crowd of parents with their children. Being new to the school and overcrowded, we had a lot of difficulties finding our class. Fortunately, the class I wanted to enroll in wasn’t crowded, so my parents didn’t get in as much trouble as the others.

There was a female teacher who was examining the intelligence of the students from a wider perspective. I had never thought of it.

Since I was good in my studies, I didn’t face any type of difficulty and finally, I got admitted to my desired class.

4. Classrooms and other essentials –

When I came out of the admission room, I with my parents observed the complete structure of the school to see what facilities were there such as classrooms, Principal room, laboratory, library, canteen area, playground, etc.

I noticed that the school had about fifty rooms and the size of the rooms was big enough. The size of a classroom was so big that fifty students could easily sit in that class.

Additionally, the classrooms were well-maintained with a green board, seats, a projector and an air-conditioner so that students didn’t feel any discomfort while studying in the classrooms. I saw two libraries in the school. These libraries had many different types of books to read.

Next to the libraries, I saw a large laboratory where students were doing science experiments.

On the ground floor, I saw a Principal room, a director’s room and a teachers’ room. Also, there was a medical room for any unexpected incident.

When I came to my home after taking admission, I told my parents that the school was very luxurious and full of essentials.

He asked me many questions related to last year’s studies but I was able to answer some of his questions. Nevertheless, he told me that I was finally admitted. Hearing this, I was very happy. The principal sir told my elder brother to drop me in the respective class so that I could feel a little bit atmosphere of the school.

When my brother dropped me in the class, the respective teacher asked for my introduction and then he permitted me to sit in the class.

It was the last period of the day. I enjoyed it very much. When the bell rang, I came out of the class and returned home.

It was a very tremendous experience for me.

As my vacation ended, suddenly my mother told me that she would get me admitted to a new school.

The next day, my mother took me to a nearby school. The name of the school was Lucknow Public School. Its building was very luxurious. When I entered the school, the gatekeeper asked me the purpose of coming to the school.

When my mother told him the reason, he sent us to the respective class teacher.

The funniest thing was that the teacher was asking the same question to all the students. But, he was expecting different answers from the students. When he asked me the same question, I answered him after much deliberation.

Due to this, he was very impressed and encouraged me a lot.

Later on, He admitted me to the school.

From p-sets to papers: a reflection on my path to Declaration Day

Section of stone building on cloudy day. Ivy covers sections of the building.

Ammaar alam / the daily princetonian.

On March 31, 2024, my friend and I realized that we had not officially declared our majors on TigerHub. We headed back to their room and settled into the cozy common room. It was incredibly anticlimatic as we both had expected a confetti graphic to appear. They were officially Neuroscience, and I was officially English. While their academic plans had slightly shifted, declaring Neuroscience had been their plan for a long time, whereas we both knew what declaring English had meant for me.

While the declaration process was simple and straightforward, my path to declaring English was anything but. I applied to Princeton for chemistry and I spent my first three semesters completing the prerequisites. Adjusting to college and Princeton was difficult as a first-generation, low-income student, but I told myself that it was supposed to be hard, and that I would thank myself later. I was miserable in most of my STEM classes and struggled with belonging. I finished my freshman year exhausted and ready to do anything but chemistry during break. I spent the summer in Tallinn, Estonia for eight weeks, studying Russian through Princeton. While I was excited to return to Princeton and see my friends again, I dreaded the p-set packed schedule and anxiety-inducing semester.

My sophomore fall semester was one of my worst semesters. I had friends and different communities on campus that I had lacked the year before, but I was completely burnt out and often too exhausted to even see them. In addition to my incredibly low energy levels, my anxiety levels were also the highest that they had ever been. Nothing was helping. One night, when neither my medication nor grounding techniques were calming a massive anxiety attack, I called my parents and asked them to take me home. Once we were home, my parents sat me down and expressed their concerns for my health. I remember my mom telling me that Princeton was like a toxic boyfriend to me, and that I should reconsider how I was spending my time here. That night, I realized that something had to change.

I knew that a small part of me had always wanted to study literature, but I had convinced myself that I would never be able to get a job with a humanities degree. I was also deterred by shame. I was worried that my friends and my peers would view me as a failure, as someone who wasn’t smart enough to be a STEM student. There is, undeniably, a widely spread bias that surrounds the humanities. I also felt that I was letting down other women in STEM. It took many conversations with friends to realize that irrational fears were holding me back from what I genuinely wanted to do.

This semester I was able to take classes that I wanted to take for the first time. My interest reflected in my class attendance and the effort I put in my work. Next semester, instead of battling through p-sets, I’m excited to become engrossed in a novel in a class like 19th Century Fiction and have a sense of belonging and joy in my academic experience.

  • Solar Eclipse 2024

What the World Has Learned From Past Eclipses

C louds scudded over the small volcanic island of Principe, off the western coast of Africa, on the afternoon of May 29, 1919. Arthur Eddington, director of the Cambridge Observatory in the U.K., waited for the Sun to emerge. The remains of a morning thunderstorm could ruin everything.

The island was about to experience the rare and overwhelming sight of a total solar eclipse. For six minutes, the longest eclipse since 1416, the Moon would completely block the face of the Sun, pulling a curtain of darkness over a thin stripe of Earth. Eddington traveled into the eclipse path to try and prove one of the most consequential ideas of his age: Albert Einstein’s new theory of general relativity.

Eddington, a physicist, was one of the few people at the time who understood the theory, which Einstein proposed in 1915. But many other scientists were stymied by the bizarre idea that gravity is not a mutual attraction, but a warping of spacetime. Light itself would be subject to this warping, too. So an eclipse would be the best way to prove whether the theory was true, because with the Sun’s light blocked by the Moon, astronomers would be able to see whether the Sun’s gravity bent the light of distant stars behind it.

Two teams of astronomers boarded ships steaming from Liverpool, England, in March 1919 to watch the eclipse and take the measure of the stars. Eddington and his team went to Principe, and another team led by Frank Dyson of the Greenwich Observatory went to Sobral, Brazil.

Totality, the complete obscuration of the Sun, would be at 2:13 local time in Principe. Moments before the Moon slid in front of the Sun, the clouds finally began breaking up. For a moment, it was totally clear. Eddington and his group hastily captured images of a star cluster found near the Sun that day, called the Hyades, found in the constellation of Taurus. The astronomers were using the best astronomical technology of the time, photographic plates, which are large exposures taken on glass instead of film. Stars appeared on seven of the plates, and solar “prominences,” filaments of gas streaming from the Sun, appeared on others.

Eddington wanted to stay in Principe to measure the Hyades when there was no eclipse, but a ship workers’ strike made him leave early. Later, Eddington and Dyson both compared the glass plates taken during the eclipse to other glass plates captured of the Hyades in a different part of the sky, when there was no eclipse. On the images from Eddington’s and Dyson’s expeditions, the stars were not aligned. The 40-year-old Einstein was right.

“Lights All Askew In the Heavens,” the New York Times proclaimed when the scientific papers were published. The eclipse was the key to the discovery—as so many solar eclipses before and since have illuminated new findings about our universe.

Telescope used to observe a total solar eclipse, Sobral, Brazil, 1919.

To understand why Eddington and Dyson traveled such distances to watch the eclipse, we need to talk about gravity.

Since at least the days of Isaac Newton, who wrote in 1687, scientists thought gravity was a simple force of mutual attraction. Newton proposed that every object in the universe attracts every other object in the universe, and that the strength of this attraction is related to the size of the objects and the distances among them. This is mostly true, actually, but it’s a little more nuanced than that.

On much larger scales, like among black holes or galaxy clusters, Newtonian gravity falls short. It also can’t accurately account for the movement of large objects that are close together, such as how the orbit of Mercury is affected by its proximity the Sun.

Albert Einstein’s most consequential breakthrough solved these problems. General relativity holds that gravity is not really an invisible force of mutual attraction, but a distortion. Rather than some kind of mutual tug-of-war, large objects like the Sun and other stars respond relative to each other because the space they are in has been altered. Their mass is so great that they bend the fabric of space and time around themselves.

Read More: 10 Surprising Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

This was a weird concept, and many scientists thought Einstein’s ideas and equations were ridiculous. But others thought it sounded reasonable. Einstein and others knew that if the theory was correct, and the fabric of reality is bending around large objects, then light itself would have to follow that bend. The light of a star in the great distance, for instance, would seem to curve around a large object in front of it, nearer to us—like our Sun. But normally, it’s impossible to study stars behind the Sun to measure this effect. Enter an eclipse.

Einstein’s theory gives an equation for how much the Sun’s gravity would displace the images of background stars. Newton’s theory predicts only half that amount of displacement.

Eddington and Dyson measured the Hyades cluster because it contains many stars; the more stars to distort, the better the comparison. Both teams of scientists encountered strange political and natural obstacles in making the discovery, which are chronicled beautifully in the book No Shadow of a Doubt: The 1919 Eclipse That Confirmed Einstein's Theory of Relativity , by the physicist Daniel Kennefick. But the confirmation of Einstein’s ideas was worth it. Eddington said as much in a letter to his mother: “The one good plate that I measured gave a result agreeing with Einstein,” he wrote , “and I think I have got a little confirmation from a second plate.”

The Eddington-Dyson experiments were hardly the first time scientists used eclipses to make profound new discoveries. The idea dates to the beginnings of human civilization.

Careful records of lunar and solar eclipses are one of the greatest legacies of ancient Babylon. Astronomers—or astrologers, really, but the goal was the same—were able to predict both lunar and solar eclipses with impressive accuracy. They worked out what we now call the Saros Cycle, a repeating period of 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours in which eclipses appear to repeat. One Saros cycle is equal to 223 synodic months, which is the time it takes the Moon to return to the same phase as seen from Earth. They also figured out, though may not have understood it completely, the geometry that enables eclipses to happen.

The path we trace around the Sun is called the ecliptic. Our planet’s axis is tilted with respect to the ecliptic plane, which is why we have seasons, and why the other celestial bodies seem to cross the same general path in our sky.

As the Moon goes around Earth, it, too, crosses the plane of the ecliptic twice in a year. The ascending node is where the Moon moves into the northern ecliptic. The descending node is where the Moon enters the southern ecliptic. When the Moon crosses a node, a total solar eclipse can happen. Ancient astronomers were aware of these points in the sky, and by the apex of Babylonian civilization, they were very good at predicting when eclipses would occur.

Two and a half millennia later, in 2016, astronomers used these same ancient records to measure the change in the rate at which Earth’s rotation is slowing—which is to say, the amount by which are days are lengthening, over thousands of years.

By the middle of the 19 th century, scientific discoveries came at a frenetic pace, and eclipses powered many of them. In October 1868, two astronomers, Pierre Jules César Janssen and Joseph Norman Lockyer, separately measured the colors of sunlight during a total eclipse. Each found evidence of an unknown element, indicating a new discovery: Helium, named for the Greek god of the Sun. In another eclipse in 1869, astronomers found convincing evidence of another new element, which they nicknamed coronium—before learning a few decades later that it was not a new element, but highly ionized iron, indicating that the Sun’s atmosphere is exceptionally, bizarrely hot. This oddity led to the prediction, in the 1950s, of a continual outflow that we now call the solar wind.

And during solar eclipses between 1878 and 1908, astronomers searched in vain for a proposed extra planet within the orbit of Mercury. Provisionally named Vulcan, this planet was thought to exist because Newtonian gravity could not fully describe Mercury’s strange orbit. The matter of the innermost planet’s path was settled, finally, in 1915, when Einstein used general relativity equations to explain it.

Many eclipse expeditions were intended to learn something new, or to prove an idea right—or wrong. But many of these discoveries have major practical effects on us. Understanding the Sun, and why its atmosphere gets so hot, can help us predict solar outbursts that could disrupt the power grid and communications satellites. Understanding gravity, at all scales, allows us to know and to navigate the cosmos.

GPS satellites, for instance, provide accurate measurements down to inches on Earth. Relativity equations account for the effects of the Earth’s gravity and the distances between the satellites and their receivers on the ground. Special relativity holds that the clocks on satellites, which experience weaker gravity, seem to run slower than clocks under the stronger force of gravity on Earth. From the point of view of the satellite, Earth clocks seem to run faster. We can use different satellites in different positions, and different ground stations, to accurately triangulate our positions on Earth down to inches. Without those calculations, GPS satellites would be far less precise.

This year, scientists fanned out across North America and in the skies above it will continue the legacy of eclipse science. Scientists from NASA and several universities and other research institutions will study Earth’s atmosphere; the Sun’s atmosphere; the Sun’s magnetic fields; and the Sun’s atmospheric outbursts, called coronal mass ejections.

When you look up at the Sun and Moon on the eclipse , the Moon’s day — or just observe its shadow darkening the ground beneath the clouds, which seems more likely — think about all the discoveries still yet waiting to happen, just behind the shadow of the Moon.

Navratri Essay in English in 300 Words

‘Navratri is a nine-night and ten-day Hindu festival. It is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. In India, Navratri is not just a festival; it’s a ten-day long season of festivals where devotees worship the Goddess Durga, offer her prayers, participate in plays, and dip holy baths in the Ganges, and the Yamuna.’

History of Navratri

‘Navratri is celebrated with great zeal and excitement. Though its celebration differs due to regional variations, everybody is encouraged to participate in cultural activities. In Gujarat and adjoining areas, the classical dances Garba and dandiya are performed by both men and women, young and old.’

‘In North India, Navratri celebrations are marked by a ten-day-long Ram Lila. It is a play on Lord Rama’s journey to Lanka, where he kills the demon king Ravana, who abducts his wife, lady Sita. Then there is the Durga Puja in West Bengal and the eastern states of India, where devotees worship the goddess Durga. It is believed that Goddess Durga wanted to eliminate evil from the earth, and to do so, killing the demon king Mahisashur was crucial. She used her Trishul or Tridant to kill the demon king.

Importance of Navratri

Navratri is a very important festival for us and Hindus across the world. This ten-day-long festival has religious, cultural, social, and historical importance.

It has religious importance as it celebrates the victory of good over evil. It symbolises the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The nine nights represent the concept of Shakti (divine feminine energy) defeating evil forces.

The nine nights of Navratri are a time of spiritual reflection and renewal. Hindus observe fasting, prayer, and meditation during these nine ten to purify the mind and body, and to strengthen their devotion to the divine.

For Hindus, Navratri is a time of joy, devotion, and spiritual elevation. It serves as a reminder of the eternal victory of good over evil and the power of divine grace to overcome adversity.

Miss Manners: Crossing guard is grateful families allowed him to be part of their school day

Miss Manners answers a question about proper protocol for crossing guard to say goodbye to families

Judith Martin, known as Miss Manners, answers a question about proper protocol for crossing guard to say goodbye to families. Canva

  • Judith Martin

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I work as a school crossing guard, and sadly, after four years at my current school, my wife and I are forced to relocate due to financial issues.

I was thinking of writing a brief note (in English and Spanish) to thank the families I have been crossing at my corner for allowing me to be part of their school day and for making my job so enjoyable. I wish to end this note with, “You are my families, and I love you all. Stay safe, and I will miss you.”

Is that too familiar for what is essentially a professional encounter on a daily basis? Because I have created friendships with the parents and kids.

GENTLE READER: Your note is sweet, if a bit effusive, but Miss Manners is inclined to let that pass. For the sake of your finances, however, let us hope that these additional family members do not then follow you all the way to your new home.

(Please send your questions to Miss Manners at her website, www.missmanners.com ; to her email, [email protected] ; or through postal mail to Miss Manners, Andrews McMeel Syndication, 1130 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64106.)
