Introduction:

An orphanage houses children of various ages who either have no family or have lost their families in natural calamities.

The home usually has a care-taker who monitors the children of the orphanage and a few helpers to take care of the residents.

A visit to an orphanage is a life-changing experience as it is filled with emotions and sentiments. I had an opportunity to visit an orphanage as my cousin was a volunteer for a local non-governmental organization and it was the occasion of The International Day of Service.

Description of the Orphanage:

The orphanage house was situated in the outskirts of the city and was close to the national highway. It was a two-storey building with a garden out in the front and a small temple just on its east boundary. The walls of the home were old and the paint had worn off. It looked like the house was without maintenance for years together. There was a small girl who was peeking through the window on the first floor when we opened the gate.

Meeting the Children:

When we entered the home, we were taken by surprise as there were more number of children than we had imagined. There was a common room where the children both boys and girls ranging from the ages of 3 to 21 years were seen. Some of them were indulged in watching the television, some were sipping soup from their bowls, some girls were busy playing with their dolls and others were staring at us.

We had brought with us food, blankets, drawing books, crayons, pencils etc. which we distributed amongst the children. They were ecstatic to have food from outside and were even more elated when they received the stationary from us. We segregated ourselves and went to talk individually to everyone.

My Personal Experience:

I went over to a small girl, about 6 years of age, who was sitting at the corner of the room staring at the glass window. I introduced myself and took a seat besides her. She greeted me with a smile and gave me a toffee which she had in her bag. She told me how her parents drowned in the flood which swept away their home and everything they had.

She was with her uncle at that time who left her in the orphanage because he was unable to attend to her. She started sobbing while narrating the story and then asked me about my parents and other things. I talked with her for quite some time and then gifted her set of drawing books, story books and crayons and she promised to paint something for me.

Conclusion:

The visit to the orphanage was a fulfilling experience for me as I came back home with not only memories but also some valuable lessons. When I reached home, I ran straight to my mother and hugged her tight saying that I loved her very much and also my father. She held me tight with teary eyes.

For years, I had been a pessimist could never reconcile to what god had bestowed upon me. I envied others and felt as if the whole world is happy and that it was only me who had happiness missing in my life thought why god always forgets to shower his blessings on me. With these negative thoughts in mind, I used to remain sad and depressed. ”neither, I had an LCD, nor a branded car”, I used to curse my fate. When I wasn’t having a computer, I had always wished to have it. When I had got it, I started wishing for a laptop. In all, I started leading a melancholic life and was never satisfied with what I had till my visit to an orphanage. Our exams were over and so the school authorities decided to take us to a nearby orphanage. Initially I flinched from the idea of visiting such an unusual Place and meeting these “uncivilized and uneducated” children who later transformed my life. We reached there early in the morning around 7:30 a.m. We queued up as instructed. When we entered the orphanage, what we saw was surprising. There were around sixty to seventy feeble orphans standing around the main gate to welcome us. When we went inside, the manager greeted and showed us the whole orphanage. It was in a miserable condition. The walls looked so old and disheveled as if just an earthquake struck and the whole orphanage would collapse. There was a kitchen where the elder girls were cooking food for all the members. Then, was a palatial room where everyone used to sleep. It was unlike my own bedroom which has a proper bed, cupboards to store things, wall hangings, a normal sized television and Bright painted walls. Then the manager showed us the garden. Small children were watering the plants, leveling the soil and performing other odd jobs efficiently. A group of girls of around my age were washing dirty clothes. This was something I used to hate when my own mother asked me to do. But they were doing all this without any regrets. Then, they gave us sometime to interact with the orphans. I started chatting with an eleven year old boy. He, in his sweet gentle voice, answered all my questions anxiously. He told me that they got food only if they get up early in the morning. So many times, they had to work endlessly the entire day with empty stomachs. I was really shocked to hear this. But when I asked don’t they feel bad about all this, he simply answered “We are accustomed to all this since the time we lost our parents.” I was touched. He further told me that nearly all the orphans were fond of studying. I was quite astonished at this. When we enquired, we found that they had strong ambitions. “Doctor, teacher, pilot”… and the list was endless. The best day of their week was Saturday because it was on that day the master used to go out for some work in the afternoon for two three hour and it was in this duration this time when all hundred of them used to leave their work , sit together enjoying, playing and singing songs. I was stunned when I realized that they knew nothing about computers, laptops, Play stations .Probably because they never got chance to step out and peep into the outside world. But still there was a sense of cooperation, love and selflessness among everyone. They lived like a family. It was 1 o clock and it was time for us to bid them goodbye. Neither of us wanted to go. From that day onwards, I was completely changed. I considered myself fortunate to have my own parents, a small but “my” house, my own bedroom, my friends and a far better person. Those orphans instilled a sense of positivity and compassion in me. Now, I have an optimistic approach towards my life. I value everything in my life and thank God for whatever he has given me.

Introduction.

At the age of eleven, my parents and I went to visit an orphanage. My parents were interested in adopting a child, so we went to meet the administrator. I felt terrible for the children at the orphanage because even though they did not seem sad, I knew they had times in their lives when they wondered why they did not have parents and homes like other children. I felt sorry for them that I even tried to convince my parents to adopt three or four of them so that we could give them what they desired. Since then, I have always found the need of helping the needy and the less fortunate in the society. That was my calling.

Although I had discovered my calling, I did not realize it until when I was twenty two years old. A calling is defined as something one does from day to day that makes a difference and builds meaning for them, something they can look back in their later years and see the positive change that they brought to the world (Hall, and Dawn, 158). Knowing your calling can be hard and one has to reflect on their spiritual and personal life to understand what God intends them to do to make a change in the world. For example, to know your calling, one has to pay attention to things that happen to in their lives, the people they meet, how they interact, and the places they get drawn to, etc. In my case, meeting and interacting with those children. It is because the subconscious has a way of letting one know if he gets headed in the right direction. A calling is things that someone loved to do probably in the past at a young age. You have to look back at your life and ask yourself what you enjoyed doing as a child. You may come across something that you often that is your calling.

Evolution of My Calling

As time passed by, I found myself wanting to do more than play with the orphans. At eighteen years, I started looking for ways to improve the lives of the children who lived in poverty. Through the church, I got more access, knowledge, and information about the children and found other people with similar interests I had. Together we sort ways to help more children. We found homes for the children where they would be comfortable. We started advocating for adoption so that people who would not bear their children would take in these orphans and by doing so bring happiness to themselves and the orphans. I realized that you do not have to have lots of money, power or influence to bring change to the world. The phrase "let your life speak" gave me the encouragement I needed, as I clearly understood its meaning. I understood it as "let the greatest values guide you." I started to see the need for living a life of higher purpose.

Four years later, my younger sister and I have brought smiles to children orphaned at young ages. We started a non-governmental organization that has seen sponsors from all lifestyles come to support our mission. I have found great joy and accomplishment in what I do, and I have never felt the need to work anywhere else. I see my course in sociology helpful in dealing with some of the children. We created a home for the children where we provide everything necessary for a child's development. I can firmly say that the children in the house are happy and comfortable. With the help of the sponsors, we can take them to good schools where they learn, play and interact with other children. We have given them the best resources we can provide, and we ensure that they feel at home so that they do not feel the need to belong to a family. We have made them view themselves as one big family. Our goal is to open homes all over the world especially in the third world countries where poverty strikes hardest. Seeing these children grow to be leaders and influencers in the world will bring much joy to us. We believe that giving love and care to these children is what God intended us to do.

An Experience That Made Me Realize My Calling

When I was six, I had a best friend called Sylvia. Sylvia and I were neighbors, we went to the same school, and we got brought up together. We had been neighbors since I could remember. We would always play together and have sleepovers either at her home or our home. Since I had no siblings, she was like my sister. One day while on their way from Christmas holidays, they got involved in a road accident. The vehicle they were traveling in hit head-on by an oncoming truck. Her mother died on the spot. Sylvia and her father were rushed to the hospital though Sylvia had only minor injuries. Two weeks later, her father passed on. It was a hard time for me although I was not old enough to understand what was happening. What made it even harder was Sylvia being taken by child services since she had no one left to raise her. I was moved to wonder what would happen to her and where she got taken.

Later, my parents helped me understand why it was necessary for children services to take her. I came to terms with God's wish although it was not easy. When we went to the orphanage to seek adoption of my sister, it hit me that Sylvia was in the same situation as those children. I missed her, but at that time I would not do anything to help or see her again. I wished I would help her but time had passed me by. I vowed that if I had the chance to help her still, I would do anything within my power to help her. I have not found Sylvia yet but helping other children like her makes me feel at ease and fulfilled. I know that she is doing great with her life and I am confident that she would be happy to know that her predicament led me to do good for others like her.

My Work's Spiritual Experience

My work is a religious experience as I interact with people from different backgrounds all the time. These people offer me the opportunity to incorporate my spiritual practice. The children I work around have given me the opportunity to practice compassion, love, and generosity. Being there for the children gives me a fulfillment caring is part of my job description, and this is a part of my spiritual journey. Working with churches to help the orphans has helped me along the way. I have met people who guide me and show me the way when I trip out of the right path. I have to be an excellent example to the children we are bringing up. I have to show them how to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and live their lives with integrity. I have had a hard time with some of them, but it takes patience and understanding. Some still question God's decision to make their parents, and we have to teach them to accept God's will and learn that everything happens for a reason.

Work according to the bible is the day-to-day activities that people do that to either help others, be rewarded or achieve fulfillment from. People sometimes confuse work with a job. Work is the number of good deeds that one produces in their lifetime while a job is what one is being paid to do and a way to earn their living. Work can be voluntary or be an obligation. Someone who works must gain something in return for example money, gifts or fulfillment that comes from working. In the Bible, we see how different people worked every day and the positive effects their work had on the communities around them. God, for example, is the first primary worker. Genesis says that God worked for six days and rested in the seventh. The work referred to here is the creation of the universe. God was the first to work since we all know that God is good, working is also proper. Just as God created the world in six days, on the Sabbath he rested, Christians must also work. God instructed us to work for six days and rest on Sabbath. You cannot relax if you have not worked. Laziness is a character that is discouraged in the bible. God was impressed by his work, and this should teach us to do our best at our work so that we can also be happy with the outcomes. When we do well at work, the reward gets honored the satisfaction of doing well.

When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, God's punishment was that man had to toil so that he could eat. It means that working is crucial for survival. To stay alive one needs food, God placed Adam and Eve in a land that had all the food they needed, but after the sin, God made it man work for food. To eat, one has to go to the fields to produce his food from the first step. God made sure that they would not find food easily as they did in the like in the Garden of Eden.

I love my job. If I had a chance to change what I do, I would not change a thing. I have learned that when you do well with others, it will always come back to you one way or another. I do not expect any payment for the work I do, but I have not lacked any necessity. I have learned a lot from the people I interact with every day. They have taught me how to love to care and be humble. I look forward to opening more homes to assist the children in need. Kindness does not cost you anything. The volunteers meetings challenge us to strive to do better and do more not only for the children but also for society as well. Someone once said, "There are enough bad people in the world, being a good person can change the world." I have learned that to change the world you have to start with yourself. Doing one good deed, a day can make the world a better place. Helping children acquire good education will make them better people in the world. The only thing you can help with is to give them a small push in the right direction.

Leroy accompanied his aunt to Rainbow Orphanage during the school holidays. His aunt volunteered there once a week. Leroy was shocked when she told him about the lives of the children there. He decided to see what the place was like.

They arrived at the orphanage at lunchtime. Leroy was stunned to see the food that the children were eating. There was nothing but a plate of rice and vegetables. Leroy thought of the scrumptious meal of dim sum that he just had at a Chinese restaurant. He wondered how the children could eat such plain food. However, the children looked extremely contented. They were tucking in happily. After lunch, Leroy’s aunt introduced him to the children. He played with them on the field. He was shocked to find out that they only had three old dirty balls to share among themselves. They did not have any other toys. Leroy thought of his room full of toys and realized how fortunate he was.

When it was time to leave, Leroy asked his aunt if he could accompany her there again. He told his aunt that he would give the children some of his toys on the next trip. He would also treat them to a lunch of hamburgers and fries.

Title: generative ai for architectural design: a literature review.

Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has pioneered new methodological paradigms in architectural design, significantly expanding the innovative potential and efficiency of the design process. This paper explores the extensive applications of generative AI technologies in architectural design, a trend that has benefited from the rapid development of deep generative models. This article provides a comprehensive review of the basic principles of generative AI and large-scale models and highlights the applications in the generation of 2D images, videos, and 3D models. In addition, by reviewing the latest literature from 2020, this paper scrutinizes the impact of generative AI technologies at different stages of architectural design, from generating initial architectural 3D forms to producing final architectural imagery. The marked trend of research growth indicates an increasing inclination within the architectural design community towards embracing generative AI, thereby catalyzing a shared enthusiasm for research. These research cases and methodologies have not only proven to enhance efficiency and innovation significantly but have also posed challenges to the conventional boundaries of architectural creativity. Finally, we point out new directions for design innovation and articulate fresh trajectories for applying generative AI in the architectural domain. This article provides the first comprehensive literature review about generative AI for architectural design, and we believe this work can facilitate more research work on this significant topic in architecture.

Judge denies Trump bid to dismiss classified documents case using Presidential Records Act

A judge Thursday denied former President Donald Trump's bid to dismiss a case alleging he mishandled classified documents , rejecting his argument that the papers were considered personal under the Presidential Records Act.

The charges against Trump "make no reference to the Presidential Records Act, nor do they rely on that statute for purposes of stating an offense," U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon wrote.

"For these reasons, accepting the allegations of the Superseding Indictment as true, the Presidential Records Act does not provide a pre-trial basis to dismiss," the judge wrote, raising the possibility the defense argument could be used later.

Cannon had asked both sides to address the argument that the national security documents could be considered personal in proposed jury instructions, an argument special counsel Jack Smith's office argued was " fundamentally flawed ." The judge said in her Thursday ruling that Smith's demand she decide the issue now is "unprecedented and unjust."

Cannon disputed that her order soliciting preliminary draft instructions was anything but "a genuine attempt, in the context of the upcoming trial, to better understand the parties’ competing positions and the questions to be submitted to the jury in this complex case."

The Presidential Records Act requires the return of presidential records at the end of a president’s term, but says they can keep their personal records, which is described as documents containing “highly personal information, such as diaries, journals, and medical records.” 

In a filing Tuesday, Smith's office said Cannon's proposed instruction on Trump's broader interpretation of the law would essentially result in the jury being told to accept Trump's defense, which it maintains is a fiction.  

“Trump’s entire effort to rely on the PRA is not based on any facts,” prosecutors said. “It is a post hoc justification that was concocted more than a year after he left the White House, and his invocation in this Court of the PRA is not grounded in any decision he actually made during his presidency to designate as personal any of the records charged.” 

Cannon's request last month for the proposed jury instructions incorporating Trump's PRA was unexpected. It came after a hearing where the judge had seemed highly skeptical of the defense, and it also came as there's no firm trial date for the case to begin.

The trial is scheduled to begin May 20, but the judge has repeatedly indicated that the date would be pushed back and asked both sides to submit new proposed dates . Both sides did so in late February, but Cannon has not yet ruled.

Trump  faces multiple charges  in the classified documents case, including willful retention of national defense information, false statements and representations, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record and corruptly concealing a document. 

The former president has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

You Don’t Just See a Total Solar Eclipse. You Feel It Completely.

Almost one year ago, in the middle of the night, I drove from my hometown, Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Dublin to catch an early morning flight to Munich. From there I caught another plane to Bangkok, another to Singapore and yet another to Perth in Western Australia. There, I rented a camper van and began a drive of more than 750 miles north to the town of Exmouth on a remote peninsula on the northwest coast of the continent.

This was the only reasonably accessible location on the planet with decent weather prospects from which to view the total solar eclipse on April 20, 2023. The entire event lasted 62 seconds. It was the 10th total solar eclipse I’d traveled to witness.

Even as a professional solar physicist, I find it difficult to convey why eclipse chasers like me go to such extraordinary lengths to witness such a fleeting phenomenon, again and again. I was extra determined to make the pilgrimage last year after I was thwarted by clouds in Chile in December 2020, and I couldn’t afford the eye-watering cost of traveling to Antarctica in 2021. I needed to whet my appetite before embarking on another expedition to see the totality of the April 8 eclipse in Mazatlán, Mexico.

It may sound absurd, but there is no other celestial event that anyone I know would devote so much time and effort to seeing. If you wish to see the northern lights, you can hop on a plane to Iceland or Norway and have a fairly decent chance of seeing them in the winter months. If you are on the nightside of the planet during a lunar eclipse and the skies are clear, you just need to go outside and look up to see it happening. But unless you are fortunate enough to live within or close to the path of totality, witnessing a total solar eclipse will probably require meticulous planning and marshaling time and money to get you to an optimal location and a bit of luck to make sure the weather forecasts you’ve pored over hold true.

Believe me, it is worth the effort.

A total solar eclipse is not something that you see — it’s something that you experience. You can feel the temperature around you begin to drop by as much as 15 degrees over the five to 10 minutes that lead up to the eclipse. The birds and other animals go silent. The light becomes eerie and morphs into a dusky, muted twilight, and you begin to see stark, misplaced shadows abound. A column of darkness in the sky hurtles toward you at over 1,000 miles per hour as the moon’s shadow falls neatly over the sun, turning day into temporary night — nothing like the calming sunset we take for granted every day. Sometimes, a few stars or planets begin to appear faintly in the sky as your eyes get used to the new darkness.

The hairs stand up on the back of your neck and the adrenaline kicks in as your brain tries to make sense of what is going on. But it cannot. It has no other point of reference to compare these sensations to. A total eclipse elicits a unique, visceral, primeval feeling that cannot be evoked by a photograph or a video or a newspaper article, and that can be experienced only within the path of totality when the moon completely obscures the disk of the sun.

And then of course there is the crowning glory: the sun’s corona, the pearly white outer atmosphere of our nearest star that we can otherwise see only using a fleet of dedicated solar-observing spacecraft. It has an ethereal beauty that is challenging to articulate.

For those brief few moments when the corona appears bright in the sky, all the effort made to experience the totality becomes worth it. You want to soak up every second of it and process every feeling, because it is over all too soon. Once the moon’s shadow has passed you feel both exhilarated and deflated because the next opportunity to experience this sensation again could be years away and on the other side of the world. And it is something that you will crave.

There is also, of course, the professional motivation for me to gaze upon the subject of my research with my own eyes. Most other astrophysicists only get to look at exploding stars or distant comets through gargantuan telescopes, where they appear as mere pixels on a computer screen or a squiggle on a graph. It’s easy to get detached from the beauty of astronomy when your job becomes more focused on securing grant funding, teaching, administrative duties and bureaucracy. Eclipse chasing reminds me why I chose this field of work in the first place and reignites my passion — and I want to inspire my students with that same passion.

Each eclipse is different. The shape and structure of the solar corona varies over the course of each solar cycle. The longer the duration of the eclipse, the darker one’s surroundings are likely to seem. And sandwiched between the sun’s “surface” and the corona is the crimson red chromosphere, the layer of the sun’s atmosphere that I have been researching for almost 20 years to understand its relationship to solar flares. In Australia the briefness of totality meant that this region was exceptionally bright and distinguished, and one could even spot some solar prominences (clouds of hydrogen gas suspended above the chromosphere) with the naked eye. That may also be the case on Monday.

People mistakenly think that a partial eclipse is good enough. It is not. When outside the path of totality, the visibility of even 1 percent of the sun’s disk is enough to outshine the entire corona. The buzz around this year’s eclipse through North America has reached a fever pitch not seen since the “Great American Eclipse” of 2017. The duration of totality will be almost twice as long — almost four and a half minutes. (Whether the weather will cooperate is still an open question .)

This is far from the first time I’ve tried to cajole people into experiencing the totality in full. In 2017, I persuaded several of my friends in the United States to join me in Nebraska to enjoy the spectacle without forcing them to traipse halfway across the globe. They later told me that they at first thought I may have been somewhat exaggerating the experience because of my professional bias, but when the eclipse was over, I knew that they finally got it. Their faces were overcome with emotion and they struggled to articulate how they were feeling. Because it wasn’t just about what they had seen — it was about what they had experienced.
