1. Go to the Facebook page of the business you want to review. 

2. Click the Reviews tab.

Facebook recently introduced new updates for Business Pages .

The main goal of the newly redesigned pages is to provide easier ways for people to interact with local businesses on social media.

According to Facebook’s VP of Local, Alex Himel, Over 1.6 billion people around the world are connected to a small business on Facebook. And starting from August 2018 Facebook is making new changes to Facebook Business Pages to help more people connect with local businesses.

One of the main updates is the further development of the feature Recommendations, which is an evolved version of the Facebook reviews system.

This new feature is already rolled out, and businesses will have the chance to see new reviews designed on their Facebook Page. The main change of the system is that the Recommendations option is integrated within the reviews and all recommendations that customers or other Facebook users previously gave will also be listed in this Reviews/Recommendations section.

As stated in the official update, Facebook is making Recommendations from the business’s community more helpful:

‘People use Recommendations to ask their communities where to go, where to eat, or where to shop on Facebook . We’re making those Recommendations more prominent on Pages.’

We are all aware that reviews and recommendations are extremely important for any company’s reputation.

This means that recommendations are not only the opinions given by customers directly on the business’s Facebook page but also when people respond to their friends when they look for a recommendation on Facebook.

Note: The old Facebook reviews are safe and sound, and your Facebook Page will continue to display all previous reviews that you’ve generated.

How are Recommendations different from Reviews?

Well, there are differences:

  • Location – The Recommendations appear on the upper-right side,, and Reviews appear on the left-hand side (if not hidden).
  • Reach – Reviews are visible to any Facebook user. With Recommendations, you can limit the reach and make it more personal.
  • Format – Reviews have star ratings and comments. Recommendations have only comments.
  • Reactions – Anyone can comment and like a Review, but only people in the person’s network can comment and like a Recommendation.
  • Specifics – People can recommend a specific business feature (choose a tag that best describes their recommendation) and share a photo; Reviews don’t have such an option.

So, the bottom line is:

  • The tab is called “Reviews”
  • The feature is called “Recommendations”

The best, mobile form for leaving a recommendation has the option to upload a photo from the phone and publish it together with the text.

Note: The character limit for a desktop recommendation is 25 and for mobile is 50.

When a customer leaves a recommendation directly on the Facebook page, they can choose a tag that best describes their recommendation. These Facebook tags work like hashtags for businesses, and the Facebook system generates them based on words used in past reviews.

How to set up Facebook Recommendations?

If you’ve already activated the Reviews tab, then you don’t need to change anything. Please note that the Recommendations are a replacement of the Reviews tab and the process to activate it is the same as before.

If you still don’t have activated the Recommendations on your Facebook Page, here is how to activate the Facebook reviews tab.

Step 1: Log in to your Facebook account and go to your business Facebook page

Step 2: Navigate to the  ‘Settings’  section on your left-hand side

How to Recommend a Business on Facebook

This process is the one that has the biggest change.

To recommend a business on Facebook, you will need to open the business’s Facebook Page that you want to recommend.

Please note that previously, there was an option to ‘ Write a review ‘ and select the review score from 1-5. Now you do not actually leave a review for the business, but you are recommending it. You have only two recommendation options, to select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, which means you want to recommend the business or not. Simple as that.

  • Click the Reviews/Recommendations tab
  • Click ‘Yes’ to recommend the Page
  • Write your recommendation, and if you use mobile, upload a photo along with the recommendation text
  • You can also choose a tag such as great service, amazing staff or similar

Over the last few years, Facebook has joined the ranks of Yelp and Google as one of the most important resources for local businesses .

In fact, an increasing number of potential customers look at Facebook recommendations prior to considering reviews from Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other traditional review websites. Facebook was second only to Google in some of the most recent surveys of customer online recommendation engagement .

For this reason, it has become increasingly essential that local businesses take their Facebook presence seriously.

In 2019, Facebook changed its rating system from a star-based system (similar to Google) to a recommendation system . In this system, people can either recommend a business or not, similar to Facebook’s famous “like” system.

Because of this, you should consider “reviews” and “recommendations” synonymous on Facebook.

In this guide, we will show you how to create a Facebook business page, how to turn on Facebook recommendations, and how to monitor and respond to these recommendations in a way that will improve your online reputation and ensure that you are using Facebook in the most effective and beneficial way possible.

Creating a Facebook Business Page

The first step to boosting your business’s online presence through Facebook is, of course, creating a Facebook page. In order to create a Facebook business page, you must have a personal Facebook account through which the business page can be managed. Assuming that you already have a personal Facebook account, creating your business page is simple enough.

There are two ways to go about it.

Option 1 : Creating your Business Page from the Facebook landing page .

If you’ve ever looked closely at the Facebook home page, you’ll notice that there is a small link at the bottom of the page that says, “Create a page for a celebrity, band, or business.”

Click on that link to get started.

After clicking that link, you’ll be taken to a page where you can choose which type of page to create. Click on the “Get Started” button under the “Business or Brand” category.

At this point, Facebook will prompt you to log in to your personal account.

After you enter your email address and password you can get started building your business page. 

The first information you need to provide is the name of your Business Page and its category. Facebook has a wide variety of categories available, including some as specific as “Smoothie Bar” or “Raw Food Restaurant.”

Once you select the proper category, your page will be created and you can move onto customization.

Option 2: Creating your page from the dashboard of your personal Facebook account .

If you’re already logged into your personal Facebook account, you can also access the page creation menu from the regular Facebook dashboard.

There should be a button that says “Create” in the top menu bar to the right of your profile picture.

Click on that button and a dropdown menu will appear. 

The first option in that dropdown menu is “Page.”

Click on that button and it will take you directly to the Page creation screen. Once you are there, click on the “Business or Brand” option and give your page a name and category.

Your new Business Page will be created and ready to customize!

Customizing your Business Page and Allowing Recommendations

Once your page is created, the first thing you should do is upload a profile picture and cover photo for your business. Facebook recommends a profile picture of 170x170 px and a cover photo of 820x312 px.

Many businesses choose to display their logo here, but the choice is ultimately up to you. 

After your profile picture and cover photo are selected, you should write a short description for your business and perhaps an introductory post.

Customizing your Business Page and Allowing Recommendations

Facebook is engineered to walk you through these steps with an easy-to-follow tutorial throughout the page creation process. 

Once all the details are in place, it is important to ensure that your page is accepting Facebook recommendations. This should be the default option for most pages, but it is always good to check and ensure that your customers can give you feedback and boost your online reputation. To enable Facebook recommendations, click on the “Settings” tab in your page dashboard.

Once you are in Settings, click on the “Templates and Tabs” section on the left-hand side of the page.

The “Templates and Tabs” section allows you to add and remove the different sections on the left-hand menu that your guests see when they visit your Facebook page, such as “Events”, “Photos”, and “Offers”.

Make sure that “Reviews” is listed as an available tab. It appears that Facebook still uses the term “Reviews” for the recommendations tab on your page. When setting up your account if you are presented with the option to show a “Recommendations” tab, select that. The effect will be the same.

If it’s not, switching your Template to “Business” should automatically add “Reviews” as an option. You can also add “Reviews” yourself using the “Add a Tab” button at the bottom of the screen.

If you’d like, you can move “Reviews” up to either the top or near the top so that your customers always see it when they go to your Facebook page.

With recommendations enabled and your Facebook business page personalized and ready to go, you should be ready to receive customer feedback and recommendations.

In this next section, we will talk about what those reviews look like as they come in and how to maximize your Facebook recommendations to improve your online reputation, attract new customers, get more reviews and keep your existing customers coming back.

Your Facebook Star Rating

As we mentioned in the introduction, in 2019 Facebook changed their rating system from a “reviews” style system to a “recommendations” system.

Facebook also added other features to the recommendation system, including the ability to tag recommendations and add photos to recommendations to give them more context.

Despite the fact that customers are not actually assigning individual star ratings anymore, Facebook will still calculate an overall star rating for your business based on the average number of people who recommend your business.

This rating will appear directly above the number of “likes” that you have, on the right-side of the page.

You must receive a certain number of recommendations before Facebook will calculate an overall star rating, although the exact number of recommendations that you need has never been explicitly revealed by Facebook.

Individual recommendations will come directly into your notifications as they are received, but they are also accessible by clicking on the box that includes your overall star rating.

Once you are on the review screen, you can sort your various recommendations either by “most helpful” or “most recent” to see what your customers are saying about your business.

The “most helpful” determination is based on the amount of feedback other customers gave to the review, most notably based on how many “likes” each review received.

Your customers can access the page that lists all your public recommendations in the same manner, by clicking on the overall rating on the right-hand side of your page. When they do so, Facebook will automatically display recommendations from their Facebook friends and colleagues first, if any exist.

Certain reviews may not be visible to everyone, as Facebook’s privacy settings allow customers to choose who is able to see their posts. For example, they can allow the Public to see their review, or only their Facebook friends.

We will touch on this again later on.

When recommendations come in, they will say either that a customer “recommends” or “does not recommend” your business.

If it is a positive recommendation, a red star will be displayed close to the name of the person leaving the recommendation.

If it is a negative review, or a “does not recommend,” the star will be gray.

Currently, Facebook does not allow you to delete a recommendation or review on your page.

However, you can report the recommendation, and Facebook may remove it if it violates one of their policies . 

To report a recommendation, click on the three dots on the right-hand side of the recommendation. A dropdown menu will appear; select the option “Find Support or Report Recommendation.”

Facebook will determine whether or not to remove the content.

Usually, Facebook will only remove it if it contains spam or abusive content. They will not remove a recommendation simply because it is a negative or unfavorable to the business.

Can Other People Comment on Facebook Recommendations?

Yes, people aside from the business and the original recommender are able to comment on Facebook recommendations.

When this happens, it is usually friends or associates of the original recommender, although sometimes it is other customers or random bystanders.

This is important to remember when you craft your responses.

Hidden Facebook Recommendations Exist, But They Do Not Affect Your Star Rating.

Customers can potentially leave you a recommendation that you are unable to see or interact with.

Because of Facebook’s privacy settings, your customers are able to decide whether or not to make the recommendation public, or only available to their chosen friends and colleagues.

Facebook will not use these private recommendations in calculating your star rating. It may be a good idea to remind satisfied customers to make their recommendation public so that it will count toward your Facebook star rating and improve your overall online reputation.

Now that your business is collecting recommendations, how do you answer them?

What is the best way to interact with customers online?

The most important thing to remember is that you should reply to every recommendation, whether positive or negative, and ensure that every customer feels heard and accommodated. There are a few different guidelines to answering recommendations which we will discuss now.  

Answering Positive Recommendations

When customers leave a positive recommendation, they are sharing their appreciation for the work you are doing.

The best response is to share your appreciation for them in return.

Thank the customer for taking the time to leave you a recommendation and let them know that you are grateful for their business. A good response would include the name of the customer, a short note of appreciation, and perhaps an invitation to work with them again in the future.

The customer will be notified as soon as you respond, through their Facebook notifications.

In the response example above, the customer is addressed by name and the salesperson who assisted the customer is also named and congratulated.

This is a great example of personalization, which is essential to a good positive recommendation response.

Writing a personal response ensures that the customer knows that you read their recommendation, and that you appreciate it. 

Keeping with the theme of personalization, it is important to avoid robotic or canned responses. There is a temptation to rely on response templates, particularly when a recommender is satisfied and not looking for confrontation, but it is relatively easy for customers to see through this.

Instead, it is best practice for businesses to personally respond to every recommendation and ensure that each customer feels heard.

Answering Negative Recommendations

When a customer does not recommend your business on Facebook, it can be tempting to jump straight to the defense.

Remember that your customer is likely looking for an outlet to express frustration and a defensive response may prompt further negative reactions.

This can quickly spiral out of control.

On Facebook in particular, it is very important to keep unseemly fighting or negativity out of the public eye. Regardless of how unreasonable the negative commentary, the most essential aspect of a negative recommendation response is moving the conversation out of public view.

A great response will express genuine concern for the customer’s feelings and offer another outlet for the customer to have their concerns addressed.

Providing a phone number is usually the best practice, but an email address can do as well.

Showing compassion and giving contact information ensures that the customer feels heard and takes the first step towards moving the conversation outside the view of the broader public. What the public does see is a responsive and accommodating business who doesn’t ignore negative feedback but instead addresses the concerns of their customers directly. 

It is nearly impossible to prevent all negative recommendations and there is some indication that you wouldn’t want to even if you could .

However, every business can change how they respond to negative feedback. Doing so will help ensure that your loyal customers stay loyal, and that potential customers see your business in the best light.

Being tagged in a Facebook post isn't everyone's idea of a good time. When this happens, there's a good chance that the post will show up in your friends' news feeds---possibly even before you've seen it. You don't have to ditch Facebook to stop this. Take control by changing this one setting.

While most of us probably associate Facebook tags with photos, that's only half of the story. You can also be tagged in posts, a feature that's commonly used when posting about meetups with friends or family members. Sometimes, spammers and marketers will tag you in posts, particularly from compromised accounts.

These tags will all show up on your timeline by default. They will appear beneath your name, photo, and bio information on your main profile. If a friend, family member, or colleague looks at your profile, they can see posts that you have been tagged in by scrolling down the page.

You may be tagged by friends, or you may be tagged by strangers. Once you're tagged in a post, your name will be visible to anyone who has permission to see that post. If the post is public, it could show up on your profile as public content (which means that anyone, friends or not, could see it).

One thing that won't show up on your timeline is individual comments that you are tagged in. So if your friend tags you in the comment section of a funny photo to draw your attention to it, the post won't show up on your profile.

Fortunately, you can take control of these tags and manually approve what appears on your timeline. By doing so, you can review everything that appears on your profile, avoiding any spam or unflattering photos while also embracing the posts that you want your friends to see.

To do this, log in to your Facebook account on the web at Facebook.com or via the mobile app for your platform of choice.

Enable Timeline Review on Facebook.com

If you're using the website, first, log in to the Facebook website. Click on the downward-facing arrow in the top-right corner of the news feed.

In the menu that appears, click on "Settings & Privacy," and then select "Settings" to show the full menu.

Click on the "Profile and Tagging" section in the sidebar on the left of the screen.

Under the Reviewing section at the bottom of the screen, enable "Review posts you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile?" by clicking the Edit button.

While you're here, you might also want to enable the "Review tags that people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook?" option to get even greater control over who can see your posts.

Enable Timeline Review on Mobile

On mobile, the process is a little different, but just as simple. After you're logged in, access Facebook settings using the "More" tab in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

Tap "Settings & Privacy," followed by "Settings" to see the full list of options that you have available to you.

Under Audience and Visibility, tap on "Profile and tagging."

Under the "Reviewing" section, enable the "Review posts you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile?" option to turn on Timeline Review. You may also want to enable the "Review tags that people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook?" option for even greater control.

The tagging process will remain the same for your friends, and they won't receive any notification that you have hidden or approved the tag on your profile. If they visit your profile, then they'll be able to see exactly what you've been tagged in, just like the rest of your friends list.

With Timeline Review enabled, you will be notified of any posts that you are tagged in with the option of approving or hiding the tag. When you approve a tag, it will appear on your profile, whereas choosing "hide" will hide the post.

This won't stop you from being tagged on Facebook, but it will prevent these tags from appearing right on your profile.

You can access Timeline Review directly from the web and mobile interfaces. To do this in a browser at Facebook.com , first, click on the downward arrow in the top-right corner. Then, choose Settings & Privacy, followed by Activity Log. Click on "Timeline, Photo and Tag Review" to see any pending posts.

On mobile using the Facebook app, tap on the "More" tab in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and then tap on your name at the top of the screen to see your profile. Tap on the ellipsis "..." icon to see more options, followed by "Review Posts and Tags" to see any pending posts.

Timeline Review doesn't work retroactively, so anything that you've already been tagged in will persist. Fortunately, you can still remove items that you've been tagged in from your timeline, although you'll have to do it manually on a post-by-post basis.

To do this, access your profile either via the web or mobile. Scroll down to see any posts that you've been tagged in, and then click (or tap) on the ellipsis "..." button next to the post.

From the menu that appears, choose "Hide from profile," and the post will no longer show up. Keep in mind that the post hasn't gone away entirely and that only the profile that made the post can change its visibility or delete it.

If you have greater concerns about the post---for example, if you think that it will reveal information about you that you would rather keep private---then you can click on the "Find support or report post" button. You'll find many other options, such as "Bullying" and "Harassment," under the "Something Else" button.

Facebook is a powerful tool that you can use to organize events, keep in touch with old friends, and even find a job. The service can also be a liability, especially if you have friends who tag and post with reckless abandon.

With Timeline Review and the ability to remove tags and posts from your timeline, you can take back a little control by manually approving what appears on your profile.

I figured it out. On your device, open the facebook app > settings & privacy > settings > under preferences choose ‘notifications’ > other notifications > toggle this to on (you can choose push, email, sms; push is all you need to see notification for adding photos). Log out of facebook on your device, log back in, try ‘add photos from device’ again on your computer on your post and it should now generate a notification for you and get access to your camera roll 🙂 If you hit no on a pop up notifications for games etc at some point recently, this is what stops that ‘add photos from device’ from generating the notification.

This is a bloody nuisance, as people have pointed out above. It will not allow pictures on a laptop to download to Facebook, because it demands “Add from a Mobile”. The other alternative simply, to choose a file from the laptop, is not visible. So much for all the self congratulations, eh guys!

No notification for me either, even though I have them on everywhere that I can verify.

Do you want to share a picture with your friends on Facebook? Uploading your photo isn't difficult whether you're using the website on your computer or the mobile app on your phone or tablet! This wikiHow article teaches you how to add photos from your phone, tablet, or computer to your Facebook page.

Things You Should Know

  • Using the mobile app on Android or iOS, tap the "Image" icon in your news feed, then select "Done/Next" and post the photo.
  • Using the website on your Windows or Mac computer has similar steps: click the "Image" icon, then use the file manager to upload your pictures.
  • For either method, select your privacy using "Friends," "Friends of Friends," or "Public" then click or tap "Post."

Step 1 Open Facebook.

  • If you aren't logged into Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) and password to continue.

Step 2 Navigate to the page where you want to post the picture(s).

  • To visit a friend's page, either enter their name into the search bar and then tap their name, or find their name in the News Feed and tap it.

Step 3 Tap icon.

  • If you don't see the icon, tap inside the "What's on your mind?" field and tap Photo/Video .

Step 4 Select photos to upload.

  • Since you're posting on a friend's wall, all their friends will also be able to see it. Your friend can edit the post to change who can see it.

Step 7 Tap Post.

  • If you aren't logged into Facebook, enter your email address and password to continue.

  • To visit a friend's page, either enter their name into the search bar and then click their name, or find their name in the News Feed and click it.

Step 3 Click Photo/Video.

Step 5 Edit your post.

  • Since you're posting on a friend's wall, all their friends will be able to see it as well. Your friend can edit the post to change who can see it. If you are uploading a picture on your own profile and want to make it public, click the audience button at the top of the post.

The City of Dripping Springs, Texas, is preparing for the April 8 solar eclipse with a set of larger-than-life eclipse glasses on display at Veterans Memorial Park.

The total solar eclipse  is in just three days, and time is running out on finding both eye protection and camera lens protection. But there's a device-app combo that could solve that problem in one fell swoop.

Solar Snap is designed to help you both protect your eyes when viewing a solar eclipse, as well as take photos of the eclipse while it's happening. The bundle comes with a Solar Snap camera filter that attaches to the back of an iPhone or Android phone, along with solar eclipse glasses for protecting your eyesight during the event.

After you attach the filter to your phone, you can use the free Solar Snap Eclipse app to zoom in on the eclipse, adjust exposure and other camera settings, and ultimately capture photos of an eclipse.

Solar Snap was founded by Douglas Duncan, a former Hubble Space Telescope astronomer, who wanted to take better pictures of a solar eclipse using only a phone's camera. However, when Duncan, who currently serves as an emeritus faculty member at the University of Colorado and was the former director of the university's Fiske Planetarium, sought a solution, he couldn't find one. 

"At recent eclipses, I saw lots of people trying to take souvenir photos with their phones, but failing," Duncan told me. "Something needed to be done! I spent the pandemic inventing and testing Solar Snap."

Since Solar Snap has a very specific purpose, it isn't necessarily useful day to day. However, it should be especially useful on April 8, when the moon passes between Earth and the sun and causes a total solar eclipse over North America. The Great American Eclipse , as it's become known, will reach the Mexican Pacific coast at 2:07 p.m. ET on April 8 and then traverse from Texas to Maine until it moves off the Eastern coast of North America at 3:35 p.m. ET.

As exciting (and rare -- the next total solar eclipse over North America won't occur until 2044) as that may be, solar eclipses carry their fair share of risks. During the eclipse, and especially just before and after totality, or when the moon completely shrouds the sun, looking at the eclipse without protective eye gear can cause severe eye damage. You can similarly suffer significant eye damage if you look at the eclipse through binoculars, telescopes or, yes, the lens on a camera or smartphone without a filter.

Solar Snap aims at solving that problem by providing filters for both the camera and eyes, making it possible to look at the eclipse and take photos of it without worrying about eye safety. And with its app settings designed to optimize image quality, it promises to deliver nice-looking views of the eclipse for you to enjoy long after it's over.

"I built automation into Solar Snap," Duncan said. "If you put your phone on a tripod, at the start of totality, you can take the filter off (don't bump the phone!), push the 'totality' button, and it will take photos all during totality, while you watch the eclipse."

The $19 Solar Snap kit is available now  -- and today's your last chance to buy it in time for it to arrive before the eclipse. The kit comes with two pairs each of the phone filter and protective eyewear, along with two Velcro sets for attaching the filter to a phone. Solar Snap's app is available in both Apple's App Store and in Android app marketplaces like Google Play .

More eclipse-photography tips

Space.com reports that over 44 million people will experience totality during the April 8 eclipse, and it's likely that most of them will try to capture a photo or two. Here are a few tips.

  • Whether you're digging out the fancy camera gear or keeping it simple, practice your setup before eclipse day. If anything goes wrong, or you forget an accessory you needed, you don't want to learn that once the eclipse has already begun. Depending where you're watching from, it's only 3 to 5 minutes long. NASA suggests practicing by photographing the moon .
  • You likely want to get yourself a certified solar filter to attach to your camera. It'll protect your eyes and let you take photos while viewing the eclipse through your lens.
  • The best photos will be taken with DSLR cameras, or what we old-timers used to just call "cameras." But let's be real: Many of us are just going to do the best we can with our phone cameras. NASA suggests you don't count on your phone's autofocus -- you'll have to do it manually, by tapping the screen, holding your finger on the moon to lock the focus, and then dragging your finger up and down to adjust the exposure.
  • You also may want to buy an inexpensive zoom lens that clips on directly to your smart phone camera. "Digital zoom will not work to create a magnified, clear image," NASA warns.
  • Remember, however, that you don't want to get too busy taking eclipse photos that you forget to enjoy the experience itself. After all, there won't be another chance until 2044 .

Why eclipses create a "beautiful coincidence" on Earth

Americans are a little spoiled when it comes to eclipses. After all, we just experienced one that the majority of the country got to see, and it comes on the heels of the "Great American Eclipse" that tracked from Oregon to South Carolina in 2017.

But that doesn't often happen. And it won't again until the 2040s.

On average, an eclipse occurs in the same place every 375 years, said Dr. John Mulchaey, Carnegie Institution for Science’s deputy for science and the director and Crawford H. Greenewalt Chair of the Carnegie Observatories.

And we’re living at the right time to truly enjoy the sight of a total eclipse on Earth, he said.

While eclipses occur throughout the solar system, none are exactly like the ones experienced in our world.

The moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but the moon is also about 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, creating a “beautiful coincidence” that results in eclipses when the three celestial bodies align, Mulchaey said.

This alignment is called syzygy, or when three objects line up in space.

In the distant past, the moon was much closer to Earth, which means totality likely didn’t appear as it does now. And within another 60 million years or so, the moon will be so far away that it will never cover the sun, making this a rare moment in time, Mulchaey said.

The long history of myths and folklore inspired by eclipses

Eclipses have long inspired terror and awe as ancient cultures sought ways to explain the celestial phenomenon .

“I find the mythology and folklore of eclipses fascinating,” said Mark Littman, a journalism professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and coauthor of “ Totality: The Great North American Eclipse of 2024 .”

“To see how people long ago and people today reacted to a total eclipse of the Sun, a sight so unexpected, so dramatic, so surprising in appearance, and so unnatural even though it is utterly natural.”

Ancient records of eclipses date back to 772 BC, when the Chinese marked them on animal bones, and 750 BC, when Babylonians recorded eclipses in their cuneiform writing on clay tablets, Littmann said. Both cultures "realized there was a rhythm to eclipses," which meant they could be calculated and predicted in the future.

Despite the ability to predict eclipses, the cause of the eclipse remained unknown, so myths and folklore filled the knowledge gap.

"The mythology of eclipses most often involves a beast that tries to eat the sun for lunch. For the Chinese, that beast was a dragon or a dog. For Scandinavians, it was a wolf," Littmann said.

Those in northern South America thought the sun and moon fought one another, trying to shut off each other's light, he said.

Transylvanian folklore suggested that the sun looked down on Earth, saw the corruption of humans, and turned away in disgust.

And the Fon people of western Africa thought the male sun ruled the day, while the female moon ruled the night.

"They love each other, but they are so busy traversing the sky and providing light that they seldom get together," Littmann said. "Yet when they do, they modestly turn off the light."

Eclipses provide unique opportunities for NASA scientists to learn more about the future of the sun

NASA scientists took full advantage of Monday’s eclipse to collect data and study the Earth, moon and sun in different ways, the agency’s deputy administrator said. One area of specific interest is the sun’s corona , or outer atmosphere.

“This is a very elusive region and it can be viewed during a solar eclipse in a very special way,” Pam Melroy said during a news conference at the end of March .

She said understanding the corona is “key to understanding fundamental questions about how heat and energy are transferred out into the solar wind,” which contributes to how solar wind and flares impacts Earth.

“Things are happening with the corona (that) we don’t fully understand and the eclipse gives us a unique opportunity to collect data that may give insights into the future of our star,” Melroy said.

And this is an especially good year to study the corona, she said. The sun is approaching  solar maximum — the peak of activity — later this year, and scientists are eager to capture this moment through a variety of observations that can only occur during eclipses. During solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic poles flip and then the sun will grow quiet again during a solar minimum.

“The chance that we are going to see something amazing is very high,” Melroy said.

Former NASA astronaut says she hopes eclipse sparks sense of connectedness with the universe

A former NASA astronaut said she hopes Monday’s total solar eclipse inspires a connection between everyone who witnessed it and the universe.

“We’re all part of this universe – and the universe was showing us some of its secrets at that point in time,” Mae Jemison told CNN.

While viewing totality in Bloomington, Indiana, the former astronaut said she was thinking about other times she experienced eclipses. 

When she saw a partial eclipse as a child in Chicago, Jemison said she was trying to make sense of what was happening.

But then thinking about her time as an astronaut, “it reinforced the feeling that when I look up, when I look away from the Earth when I was in space, it again connects me with this world, with this universe – and know that I have a responsibility.”

Jemison said science is about building on knowledge for the next generation, and the eclipse was an opportunity to do just that. Scientists used Monday’s eclipse to gather data to better understand the sun but Jemison said she hopes there is also learning at a personal level.

“I hope what people discover is themselves and their connectedness to the rest of the universe,” she said.

Eclipse Explained: Is there anywhere that saw totality in both 2017 and 2024?

Yes! There is an area where both 2017 and 2024 paths of totality intersect. According to a map from NASA , that area includes parts of Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky.

One of the places in that intersection, Carbondale, Illinois, experienced the longest period of totality in 2017 at 2 minutes, 42 seconds, according to NASA. 

Seeing the eclipse again more than 20 years later

Worried about eye damage? Here are the signs you should visit an optometrist after the eclipse

Maybe your eclipse glasses were fake. Perhaps you forgot to slip them back on as the first bit of sunlight reappeared after totality. Or you noticed your child, friend or family member looking up at the sun without putting on their glasses.

Symptoms of eye damage after improperly viewing the eclipse without proper protection can take hours or days to manifest. They include loss of central vision, altered color vision or distorted vision .

And if you notice any symptoms or experience eye discomfort, make an appointment immediately using the American Optometric Association's doctor locator , said Ronald Benner, an optometrist and president of the American Optometric Association.

“For most people, it’s an alteration of color vision,” Benner said. “The next morning, colors just don’t look right, or it may be bleached out it or just kind of hazy all the time. For others, it may be that they actually have holes in their vision.”

If the damage occurs in the center of someone’s vision, it can affect the ability to read or recognize faces, Benner said.

The Moon’s shadow, or umbra, on Earth was visible from the space station as it orbited into the path of the solar eclipse over southeastern Canada.

From space, crew members at the International Space Station saw a different perspective of the celestial event — the moon’s shadow cast onto Earth.

The orbiting laboratory "soared into the moon’s shadow" and NASA Flight Engineers Matthew Dominick and Jeanette Epps got a chance to capture it following their “workday filled with cargo transfers, spacesuit maintenance, and microgravity research,” according to a statement from NASA . The astronauts took pictures and videos of the shadow of the moon as seen from their position about 260 miles above southeastern Canada.

Alex Edelman debuted this special as a stage show in 2018, which just to give you a sense of six years worth of time, is not just pre-pandemic, but also in a time when America was shocked by an antisemitic white supremacist march in Charlottesville and the then-president’s reaction to it. In 2024, when Edelman’s show finally debuts on HBO, we’re all in a much different frame of mind when thinking about Jewishness. Of course, that might just make his story even more important to tell now.

ALEX EDELMAN: JUST FOR US : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Edelman, a millennial born and raised in and around Boston, took Just For Us to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, where he received a nomination for best show (Rose Matafeo’s Horndog won that year). Following that run, he enjoyed an Off-Broadway run in 2021 that made the leap to Broadway in 2023, where it was filmed in August for HBO.

Directed for the stage by the late Adam Brace, and subsequently directed here by Alex Timbers (who previously worked with John Mulaney on Oh, Hello! , Kid Gorgeous , and Baby J ), with Mike Birbiglia on board also as an executive producer, Edelman’s special focuses on how he decided to respond to antisemitic threats on social media not just through online means, but more significantly by responding to an open invite to a meeting of white nationalists in Queens.

“Nothing says white privilege more than a Jew walking into a meeting of racists, and thinking, this will probably be fine.” Of course, he can joke about it now. Spoiler alert?

Memorable Jokes: It’s not all about Edelman’s fateful decision to infiltrate a meeting of white supremacists.

He warms us up with a bittersweet observation about how Koko the gorilla, who had learned sign language and met Robin Williams, reacted upon learning Williams had died in 2014. Edelman also fills us in on his own Jewish upbringing, including the one time his parents inadvertently let them celebrate Christmas and the very different career path his younger brother has followed.

But the bulk of the show revolves around how Edelman found himself answering a call for people questioning their whiteness to convene in an apartment in Queens, with the comedian jokingly recalling the various people he met there, the small talk they made, the outside hobbies they had, and even the woman he found himself crushing on at the meeting.

It was only after the fact that a woman Edelman did date pointed out to him his own white privilege by having the chutzpah to attend the meeting in the first place.

And then he reckoned with why he went at all, knowing that everyone there would hate him for even existing. So why do it? “I wanted them to like me,” he confesses.

Our Take: So what’s with that story about Robin Williams and Koko, anyhow?

It’s all meant at once to put Edelman in context with Williams. “My comedy barely works if you’re not from the Upper West Side,” Edelman cracks. “Robin Williams crossed the species barrier.” He also says the story shows us his love for dumb jokes and the lengths he’ll go to, taking sign language classes over Zoom, just to get the bit right.

He meant to write a show full of dumb, silly jokes just like this.

But the harsh reality of life for Jews today, whether in America or anywhere else, has become fraught with danger as antisemitism continues to rise in his lifetime. And as much as he’d like to think of himself as a basic white guy (even with the baggage that comes with that), society won’t look at him that way. What’s a Jewish American to do? For Edelman, he could only fall back on his sense of humor and wish that might be enough to reach out and connect with the other side in real life. If a comedian could make a gorilla love and weep over him, why can’t humans of different political and religious philosophies do the same?

Our Call: STREAM IT. Ultimately, the show wants us to be as hopeful as Edelman, while also reminding us that sometimes we need safe spaces to simply exist. And we sure need a lot of hope right now.
