Ghost Project (2023) Review

Ghost Project, also known as Side Project and Paranormal Encounters in the UK, begins with a trio of ghost hunters equipped with a device that looks like an old video camera crossed with one of the rifles from Aliens investigating a factory that was the scene of a deadly fire. They find quite a few ghosts who don’t seem too happy to be found, blinding Mike (Raymond E. Lee, What the Waters Left Behind: Scars , The Devil’s Tail) by making his glasses explode and dragging the other two into the darkness.

Brian (Juan Cruz Rolla, There Be Dragons, The Games Maker) recently lost his girlfriend Ellen (Camila Pizzo, Crystal Eyes, The One in Charge) in a car accident. Unable to deal with it, he uses VR to talk to an avatar of her. But since it can’t talk back, the result is creepy in all the wrong ways. While testing an improved version of his VR goggles in an old warehouse, he comes across the ghost detector we saw in the prologue, and of course he takes it.

Ghost Project 1

Despite telling his friends Alice (Laura Casale, Lying in Waiting, Mete Miedo) and Sysop (Zhongbo Li Zhang, Héroe) that he’ll return it, he decides to see if he can use it to contact Ellen. Alice suggests testing it in her apartment, which she shares with a benign spirit. The results however are anything but harmless. Theorizing that the device angers the spirits somehow, they track Mike down looking for answers.

Ghost Project was written by Santiago Fernández Calvete who’s other credits include The Exorcism of God which I liked and A Taste of Blood which looked like it was good before its US distributor dubbed it and added several out-of-place songs to the soundtrack. He has an interesting central idea here, but really doesn’t do much with it, eventually resorting to having a ghost attack Alice with a power drill as if this was a slasher film.

Ghost Project 2

Director Federico Finkielstain (The Silent Party, Love in the Time of Selfies) doesn’t seem to have any feel for the genre. His attempts at staging the film’s scare scenes look like they were copied from other films and recreated here, with a lack of feeling for them or any understanding of why they work. Glitchy video and distorted images aren’t scary by themselves, and Ghost Project lacks the setup and atmosphere to make them work, despite much of the final act taking place in an abandoned factory that should have been easy to make look scary.

Further complicating matters, IMDB lists Ghost Project as being made in the US, but it was obviously shot in Argentina with local performers acting in or badly dubbed into equally badly translated English. Brian has a British accent that appears and disappears like a ghost, and Alice has an accent that’s so thick it’s hard to understand her at times. Given how common subtitles have become, the filmmakers should have gone that route here.

Ghost Project 7

When we see the film’s ghosts, it’s almost always via the machine or the app they develop to go with it, and they’re the standard vaguely looking human shapes caught on a video signal that looks like it will break up at any moment. The CGI is fairly good, but it’s so generic the images, with one exception, have no effect.

A distinct disappointment, Ghost Project seems overly long, even though it only lasts seventy-seven minutes. It’s all been done before, and done much better, which mean there’s no reason to subject yourself to this film.

Ghost project 2023 ½.

Watched Jan 01 , 2024

panvaneer’s review published on Letterboxd:

An odd low-budget horror film that doesn't have the slightest feel for the underlying aesthetic. Three tech engineers attempt to update 1970's scientific detritus into an app for perceiving ghosts, or at least that is the overarching attempt.

The narrative is convoluted and not helped by inconsistent dubbing and ESL acting, this needed subtitles. The type of film that just feels off, one is wondering how such a convoluted attempt was ever made.

'Ghost' movie review: Shivarajkumar’s electrifying performance holds the fort in Srini’s multiverse

A still from Ghost directed by Srini, starring Shivarajkumar, Jayaram and Anupam Kher.

The terms spin-offs and multiverse are gradually making their mark in Indian cinema, and it is making its presence felt in the Kannada film industry with the introduction of Ghost. This cinematic endeavour, driven by director Srini, is a progressive step forward. More so, the inclusion of Shivarajkumar, who brings with him a strong fan base and an even stronger inclination to experiment, elevates the project.

Undertaking a project of this magnitude comes with its fair share of risks, with outcomes never guaranteed. There are a multitude of factors, including commercial viability, technical prowess, authenticity, and the collaboration of every team member, which must align harmoniously to make it work. Ghost encompasses all the elements that a commercial film requires, but it does so on an ambitious scale, with a focus on plot-driven characters, technical excellence, and a deep respect for cinematic art. It’s a departure from the conventional formula, with the omission of songs, a traditional heroine, and the standard template. The question arises: Has Ghost, without all these, managed to fulfill every aspect of its unique approach, and does it offer more?

Now, let’s delve into the storyline. The film introduces a rare concept in cinema – prison privatisation becomes the central theme of this heist thriller. When former CBI agent Vamana (Prashanth Narayanan) is taken hostage, ACP Chengappa (Jayaram) is called in to resolve the crisis. The mastermind behind this predicament is Dalavayi Muddanna (Shivarajkumar). Known as ‘Big Daddy’ in criminal circles, Dalavayi is a feared underworld kingpin with a history involving Chengappa. The motive behind Dalavayi’s attack on the prison becomes the core mystery that Chengappa must unravel. Why has the prison been hijacked? Why have the inmates become his allies? What is Dalavayi’s new identity? Is he the Ghost? These questions slowly unfurl, gradually exposing the layers of this enigma. The film concludes by hinting at the arrival of Dalavayi’s son in the sequel.

At its outset, Ghost may be perceived as a thrilling action spectacle, particularly in its initial portrayal as a hijacking narrative. The film maintains its focus on action-packed thriller elements, with the heist holding the narrative together. The first half guides viewers through Chengappa’s perspective and sets the stage for a revelation. The puzzle pieces seamlessly fall into place in the second part, delivering a captivating storyline. The film’s thrilling, audacious elements, like the daring prison escape, may seem far-fetched, but they are skillfully executed to stir emotions. Even when a statue (Dr. Rajkumar) unexpectedly helps, questions about believability matter less.

Shivarajkumar’s charismatic portrayal as Dalavayi or what he calls ‘Ghost’ retains his enduring mass appeal with sophistication and grandeur, avoiding unnecessary extravagance. He engages in intense gunplay and delivers powerful dialogues, which is limited in the first half, but his presence on screen remains engaging, which only gets stronger post-intermission.

Jayaram is a valuable addition to the film, playing the role of a CBI officer, and he commands a commendable on-screen presence. His extended duration is justified. Anupam Kher adds a final touch of excellence while his character holds the promise of further development in the sequel. Archana Jois, in the role of a journalist, and Prashanth Narayanan, a former CBI officer, play pivotal roles in connecting the dots of the narrative. Dattanna has a key role to play along with some fresh faces showcasing their talents. The existence of a mouse in the film gets an unusual placement, and it’s something to take note of. Srini’s multiverse, featuring himself as Lawyer Mahesh Das from Birbal, makes a brief appearance, setting the stage for future intrigue.

The film eventually reveals itself as part of Srini’s expanding Cinematic Universe, setting the stage for a potential multi-starrer and opening doors to various cinematic ventures in the future. Ghost also explores technological advancements, including the de-aging of Shivarajkumar, which adds an element of surprise. However, certain loopholes in this de-aged version require correction, especially if it becomes significant in the sequel.

The heist emerges as an ambitious and captivating production that transcends the confines of traditional commercial cinema, also introducing the concept of the multiverse in Kannada cinema. It possesses a distinct voice within the commercial framework and is a testament to its strong technical mastery—Mahendra Simha’s visionary cinematography and Arjun Janya’s evocative music enhance the overall cinematic experience.

In conclusion, Ghost offers thrilling moments, with Shivarajkumar’s exceptional performance, along with the rest of the cast, elevating the viewing experience. It’s unquestionably a film worth watching, and the anticipation of a sequel promises even more excitement.

GHOST Shares First Teaser For Upcoming Movie

GHOST has shared the first teaser for the band's film project.

According to the 30-second spot, which can be seen below, the movie will be "coming soon to cinemas worldwide".

Last October, GHOST leader Tobias Forge confirmed that footage from the band's September 2023 two shows at the Forum in Inglewood, California will be used as part of the film.

"When I first started putting it together, I was, like, 'Oh my god, I'm going to faint because there's so much to think about,'" Forge told Metal Hammer magazine. "Then it was, like, 'No, no, just don't think about it at all.'"

Both GHOST shows at the Forum were device-free experiences. Use of phones and smart watches was not permitted in the performance space. Upon arrival at the venue, devices were secured in individual Yondr pouches that were opened at the end of the event.

"I have never seen a crowd interact the way that they did since I was in a club band," Forge said. "They were the best shows I've ever done with GHOST , just because I didn't have to see those fucking mobile phones."

Tobias went on to say that GHOST was "essentially shooting a film. And we used two nights of crowds as extras," he explained. "It's going to be a film with a concert element. So a lot of what you experienced [at the two L.A. shows] is going to be part of this project."

Tobias was also asked if the GHOST film will be similar to METALLICA 's "Through The Never" , which starred members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan ( "Chronicle" , "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" ). DeHaan played a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. Forge replied: "In the sense that it's a concert with something else combined."

At the Forum shows, GHOST performed the song "Twenties" live for the very first time live. They also played their cover of Roky Erikson 's "If You Have Ghosts" , which was originally reimagined by GHOST for their 2013 EP "If You Have Ghost" . The band's version of the track at the Forum featured two cellists with a piano playing, and it was performed on a separate stage from the rest of the set.

Back in 2019, Forge told Revolver that there was a GHOST feature film in the works. He added, however, that this wouldn't be your typical "rockumentary" or even a concert film, but something else entirely.

"Most films about bands are biographical, and I see no reason to tell our story yet," Forge said. "It's a little bit like premature ejaculation. You have to have a career first and then you can tell the real story, so that was never an option. And when you yank away that, what do you have? Well, that would be a fictional story."

When Forge spoke to Revolver about the GHOST film four years ago, he explained that it would be a while before the project came to fruition.

"The cog wheels are turning on that one," he said. "We're just trying to figure out a lot of the practicalities. Making a film is a big endeavor. Another problem that I have had over the course of my career is that I don't have a shit-ton of time. I've learned over the years that it's really important not to do everything at once."

Ghost’s New Teaser Trailer Has Famous Horror Movie Reference

Ghost have shared a new teaser trailer on their social media that contains horror movie references.

The Tobias Forge -led Swedish outfit shared a video on Instagram earlier today (April 4) with a popcorn emoji as the caption. The clip shows Forge taking the stage and prancing around, and an image of a woman standing still flashes in the middle of it. A title screen appears at the end which reads, “Coming soon to cinemas worldwide.”

The Trailer Contains a Horror Movie Reference

The image shows a woman standing in front of a set of stairs that go down to a subway platform, and the city names Manhattan and Brooklyn are visible on the sign behind her. As pointed out by a fan in the comments, this is a reference to a scene in the 1973 film The Exorcist.

In the movie, the priest who performs the exorcism, Father Karras, has a dream where he calls out to his mother, and frantically runs toward her as she descends back down the stairs. The sign behind her is the same as the one seen in the Ghost clip.

Forge Confirmed the Band Had a Movie in the Works in Late 2023

Ghost filmed two of their concerts that took place in Inglewood, Calif. in September of 2023, and Forge confirmed that footage from the shows would be used for a movie . However, he teased that it wouldn’t be your average concert film.

“We were essentially shooting a film,” he told Metal Hammer . “And we used two nights of crowds as extras…It’s going to be a film with a concert element. So a lot of what you experienced [at the two LA shows] is going to be part of this project.”

The frontman said that the film is similar to Metallica’s 2013 film Through the Never, “In the sense that it’s a concert with something else combined.”

Ghost have shared a plethora of cinematic videos on their YouTube channel that contained references to other horror movies, such as The Shining. But, this is the first time a Ghost film will premiere on the big screen.

The 10 Best Family Movies About Ghosts, Ranked

These movies are spooky, but in a kid-friendly way!

Ghosts, haunted houses and things that go bump in the night are key ingredients to a good scary movie , but not all of them have to be so terrifying. Even kids love ghost stories, and there are plenty of movies about these spiritual apparitions that are both spooky and good fun for the whole family without giving the kiddos nightmares for days. It could seem as if adults would become bored with a ghost movie geared toward kids, but one would be mistaken, as even those relatively innocent movies can provide a decent scare here-or-there for the older crowd.

To be clear, the bulk of the horror genre is not made with kids in mind. While flicks like Insidious and The Conjuring are definitely too much and will likely scar your child for life upon first viewing , there are many safe options out there that still make for thrilling and exciting family viewing . As they say, “I ain’t afraid of no ghost!”

10 ‘We Have A Ghost’ (2023)

Directed by christopher landon.

Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon stepped away from teen slasher films to direct the family-friendly supernatural movie We Have a Ghost for Netflix. In the film, Kevin’s ( Jahi Di’Allo Winston ) family become overnight social media sensations when they discover they have a ghost in their home named Ernest ( David Harbour ). However, when Kevin and Ernest investigate Ernest’s past, they become targets of the CIA.

Thanks to its comedic elements and a fun performance from Harbour, We Have a Ghost is light family viewing that will make kids laugh rather than scream . It’s a perfect choice for a kids' movie to watch on the streamer , and features actors like Anthony Mackie and Jennifer Coolidge . It will leave viewers also wishing they had a ghost like Ernest in their house.

9 ‘Scooby-Doo’ (2002)

Directed by raja gosnell.

Based on the iconic Warner Bros. cartoon and cultural phenomenon, Scooby-Doo marks the live-action debut of everyone’s favorite sandwich eating and mystery-solving dog. After a clash of egos forces Mystery Incorporated to break up, the gang reunite at a creepy amusement park on an island resort, where they investigate strange occurrences.

Along with Scooby ( Neil Fanning ), the Mystery Inc. gang are perfectly cast, with Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Linda Cardellini as Velma and Sarah Michelle Geller as Daphne. Scooby-Doo has delightfully camp 2000s vibes, with plenty of ghostly moments that will have viewers trying to uncover the mystery along with the gang . It’s a nostalgic favorite that is still so much fun to watch today.

Scooby-Doo can be streamed on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

8 ‘Haunted Mansion’ (2023)

Directed by justin simien.

Most people are familiar with the 2003 version of The Haunted Mansion , starring Eddie Murphy and based on the popular Disneyland attraction. The ride was once again adapted for the big screen in 2023’s Haunted Mansion , giving the story a modern update and feel. The film follows single mother Gabbie ( Rosario Dawson ) and her son Travis ( Chase Dillon ), who enlist the help of spiritual experts to rid their new home of ghosts.

The ensemble is made up of LaKeith Stanfield as Ben, Tiffany Haddish as psychic Harriet, Owen Wilson as Father Kent, Danny DeVito as historian Bruce, Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota and Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost. Haunted Mansion is a Disney movie, so the scares are quite tame , but the film is still full of entertaining haunted house shenanigans .

7 ‘Casper’ (1995)

Directed by brad silberling.

They call Casper ( Malachi Pearson ) the friendly ghost, and it’s easy to see why in this touching and heartfelt paranormal tale. Afterlife expert Dr. James Harvey ( Bill Pullman ) is hired to remove ghosts from a crumbling mansion, and he brings daughter Kat ( Christina Ricci ) along with him. His plans change when they meet Casper, a kind young ghost who befriends Kat.

However, Casper’s ghost uncles are not so friendly, and the human pair must ultimately help them cross over to the afterlife. Viewers will fall in love with the adorable Casper and his sweet relationship with Kat . It is also deeply emotional and will tug on the heart strings. Ultimately, it is a harmless little spooky film that is perfect for both kids and adults.

Casper can be streamed on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

6 ‘Monster House’ (2006)

Directed by gil kenan.

Monster House takes the concept of haunted houses to a whole new level, with the titular house being a living, breathing and dangerous monster. The story follows three teens who try to convince everybody that the house is haunted, but when no one listens, they must take matters into their own hands to protect the children in their neighborhood.

Monster House features some genuinely scary moments and imagery that may be a little too much for younger kids, so the film is definitely targeted towards older children and their families . If kids want a really great scare without any of the emotional trauma, this is the perfect viewing choice. As funny as it is scary, it makes for a great watch on Halloween or any other time of the year.

Monster House

Monster House can be streamed on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

5 ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ (1992)

Directed by brian henson.

If you are in the mood for a more cheerful story about ghosts, then look no further than The Muppet Christmas Carol . Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge in this retelling of Charles Dickens ’s A Christma Carol , which also features Kermit the Frog ( Steve Whitmire ) and Miss Piggy ( Frank Oz ), and is narrated by Gonzo ( Dave Goelz ) and Rizzo the Rat (Whitmire).

In the film, the grumpy and greedy Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, in order to teach him about Christmas and change his views on life. Not only is The Muppet Christmas Carol a beloved film to watch during the festive season , but it’s also probably the best Muppets movie ever . It is perfect viewing for all ages.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

The Muppet Christmas Carol can be streamed on Disney+ in the U.S.

4 ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ (2021)

Directed by jason reitman.

The original Ghostbusters is one of the most iconic movies to come out of the 1980s, launching a franchise that still lives to this day. While most of the sexual innuendo and references in that movie will likely fly over children’s heads, they are a reminder that the film is not necessarily targeted towards kids. Ghostbusters: Afterlife , the legacy sequel that continues the story after decades, is definitely more family friendly in terms of content .

The film follows a single mom ( Carrie Coon ) and her two kids ( Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard ), who are related to original Ghostbuster Egon Spengler ( Harold Ramis ). They discover their connection to the Ghostbusters and continue what they started. Whimsical, charming and heartfelt, this is a film to be enjoyed by all ages.

3 ‘Corpse Bride’ (2005)

Directed by tim burton.

Tim Burton is king when it comes to creepy movies targeted towards families, and Corpse Bride is one of his best. Victor ( Johnny Depp ) is set to marry Victoria ( Emily Watson ) in an arranged marriage. Nervous, he practices his wedding vows in front of a deceased woman’s grave. The woman, Emily ( Helena Bonham Carter ), is brought back to life (still appearing as a corpse) and believes the pair are now married.

Featuring creative and eye-popping stop-motion animation , Corpse Bride is as equally spooky as it is kooky . It is both hilarious and macabre, with a bittersweet love story at its core. The film marked Burton’s first animated feature film, and his gothic style and influence is evident in every frame.

Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride can be streamed on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

2 ‘ParaNorman’ (2012)

Directed by chris butler and sam fell.

From Laika, the studio that brought audiences the weird and wonderful Coraline , comes ParaNorman , another stop-motion animated and frightful adventure. Norman Babcock ( Kodi Smit-McPhee ) is a misunderstood boy who can talk to ghosts. When his town comes under a deadly curse, he must use his abilities to save the day.

He teams up with his friend Neil ( Tucker Albrizzi ), sister Courtney ( Anna Kendrick ), her boyfriend Mitch ( Casey Affleck ) and bully Alvin ( Christopher Mintz-Plasse ). Norman’s unique gift is seen as a positive, as he can talk to his dead uncle ( John Goodman ) and receives important information that will help him lift the curse. ParaNorman is another flick that may be too scary for very little ones, but that older kids will absolutely adore .

ParaNorman can be streamed on Roku in the U.S.

1 ‘Beetlejuice’ (1988)

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Say his name three times and the mischievous, trickster ghost played by Michael Keaton will appear. The film follows Adam ( Alec Baldwin ) and Barbara ( Geena Davis ), a deceased couple who continue to live in their home. When new people move in, they try to scare them out and enlist the help of Beetlejuice.

Keaton’s portrayal of the crass and eccentric Beetlejuice is one for the ages, crafting a truly iconic cinematic character. Kids will be enthralled (and maybe even a little creeped out) by the imaginative and quirky visuals, which come courtesy of director Tim Burton and his distinct filmmaking style . While children probably won’t get some of the adult jokes and humor, it’s likely they’ll be distracted by all the artistry on screen.

See first teaser for upcoming GHOST feature film

ghost 2023 kia forum PROMO, Ryan Chang

Ghost have just revealed the first taste of their long-promised feature film , and the 30 seconds we've seen so far are whimsically cinematic.

A quick teaser clip was posted over socials this morning (April 4th), and it finds Ghost frontman Tobias Forge taking a bow and performing a few spin moves on a moodily-lit concert stage. There's also a super strange split-second moment of a lady standing in front of what looks like a green-screened subway station.

As you can see below, we're then faced with word that the as-yet untitled project will be "coming soon to cinemas worldwide."

Last fall, it was confirmed that the band had filmed their two-night stint at The Forum in Inglewood, California, with the professionally-shot concert footage set to be integrated into "something else."

"It's going to be a film with a concert element," Forge said at the time. "So a lot of what you experienced [at the two L.A. shows] is going to be part of this project."

While no further details have been revealed around the plot of the untitled Ghost movie, the group have been contemplating a cinematic project since 2019. Forge told us back then that it was too early for Ghost to go the traditional bio-pic route.

"Most films about bands are biographical, and I see no reason to tell our story yet," he said. "It's a little bit like premature ejaculation. You have to have a career first and then you can tell the real story, so that was never an option. And when you yank away that, what do you have? Well, that would be a fictional story."

Stay tuned for more details surely coming soon.

  3. Ghost Project (2023) Review

The CGI is fairly good, but it's so generic the images, with one exception, have no effect. A distinct disappointment, Ghost Project seems overly long, even though it only lasts seventy-seven minutes. It's all been done before, and done much better, which mean there's no reason to subject yourself to this film.
