PowerPoint Morph: Creating A Prezi Effect Using the Morph Transition

My favorite feature of Office 365 is the Morph transition (yes… it’s a PowerPoint transition, not an animation), which is an absolute game changer for working with your PowerPoint animations.
This tutorial will show you just one of many different ways you can use. When I first saw this feature pop up in my 365 update, I got so excited I stayed up almost all night making a demo video of a cool Prezi-like effect, shown below.

This is just one of a TON of cool ways to use the Morph Transition for creative animation effects, which Iâll be covering more in the future. For now, let me show you how to make the cool Prezi-like effect you just saw.
How to get the Morph transition?
To use the Morph transition, you need to have the 365 (subscription) version of Office. If you donât have it yet, you can get a free 30-day Office 365 trial here . Using the Morph transition is super easy. Simply follow these steps:
- Format your initial slide with text, images, or shapes.
- Duplicate your slide as many times as needed, moving your picture around.
- Add the Morph transition to each slide.
1. Find your picture
This sounds simple, but itâs actually really important. The picture MUST be of high quality so that you can zoom in and not be worried about pixelation.
To test the quality of your picture, drag the corners to make it the maximum size youâll think youâll use in the presentation (this is how weâll get the zooming effect later). Then, test it out by viewing in Presentation mode â if it looks good, youâre good to go.
Vectors are images that are made of individual shapes so they can be resized without any loss of quality. Make sure you get vector files with an EMF, WMF or EPS extension. These can (usually) be ungrouped and used as true vectors in PowerPoint.
Where to get awesome vector images and pictures
I actually got my vector image from Shutterstock in .EPS form. However, you can get plenty of free (and really nice!) work-space vectors from my new favorite vector site â Freepik .

2. Add your words
First off, think about the full message you want to have on your page and write it out somewhere (maybe in the notes section). Then, find ways to shorten the text, where possible â you will thank yourself later! The shorter the text, the easier. Here was my text:
PowerPoint just got an amazing makeover with 2 new features that will turn your world upside down. Designer adds extra spice to your pics, and Morph makes your animations more elegant. Just two sentences â and it still takes quite a bit of time to make, especially if youâre just focusing on one or two words at a time, as I did.
Now, think about where you want the words to go on the page and the path of the presentation flow. Itâs extremely helpful to plan this out in advance before you actually put the text in, since you may find you donât have enough space for the text or need to adjust objects on the picture to make room.
Below is how I mapped it out in my head. Each arrow represents a âstop pointâ on the picture, which weâll use later to do the animations.
Text actually needs to be in vector or shape form â it canât just be a textbox but must be turned into resizable shapes.
Why? Well, whatâs annoying is that (in a little bit) when we group and resize the overall picture, everything will resize except the text, which will still remain the same font size, ruining the effect. While you can manually adjust the font size, itâs hard to get that precise (and if you have a lot of text, itâs a pain to do) â trust me, Iâve played with it enough to know!
Hereâs what it looks like, for example, if you make the picture bigger â everything gets bigger except the text, which now looks extremely small compared to the rest of the picture. Not cool.
First, insert a rectangle (of any color) next to the textbox you want to convert. Make sure the rectangle is larger than the textbox.
3. Add Zoom Pan and Rotation
This is where the Prezi-like magic happens. Basically, you put your picture on the first slide in the position where you want your sequence to start. I chose to start by zooming in on the monitor that says âPowerPoint.â For this, I had to make the picture really large in size. Below, you can see where the slide is and all of the other parts of the picture that donât show (the greyed out area).
Here is what my slides ended up looking like (from Slide Sorter View in PowerPoint). As you saw earlier, each of these slides shows just a small piece of the picture â the rest is outside the slide and not seen.
Now just go into Presentation mode and watch your animations come to life! The first time you try it, I promise you â itâll be a truly amazing experience. Itâs like nothing weâve ever seen in PowerPoint. Maybe youâll even be inspired to pull your own near-all-nighter to make a demo video!

Learning how to create a presentation doesnât happen overnight, but even the best presenters are constantly practicing and improving their craft. Read to see how you can make a good presentation with these 6 tips.
Structure your presentation so that itâs easy to follow
If youâve attended a presentation and left feeling inspired or informed, itâs probably because the presenter did a good job structuring their presentation so that you could follow along and understand key take-aways. Thereâs research to back this. Studies show that audiences retain structured information 40% more accurately than unstructured information.
On top of that, structuring your presentation allows you to organize your thoughts and plan what youâre going to say, helping you feel more confident going into your presentation.
To structure your presentation, you need to first choose the purpose of it. Presentations typically fall into four main types: persuasive, informative, motivational, and instructive. Consider what you want your audience to do when you finish your presentation and structure your presentation around that.
Next, start writing the content of your presentation. We recommend using the same narrative framework as a story (a beginning, middle, and end). The storytelling framework allows you to set up conflict that needs to be resolved and show what could be. This is a particularly good framework for persuasive presentations, but it also creates a compelling narrative for any other type of presentation. Hereâs how writer, speaker, and CEO Nancy Duarte charts out the storytelling framework :
Hereâs how to think about each part of the story:
- Beginning â Describe the status quo and what the audience is used to (they might be nodding their heads in recognition of what youâre saying). Once youâve set that baseline, introduce your vision of what could be. The rest of your presentation will bridge the gap between what is and what could be.
- Middle â Keep describing the differences between what is and what could be. As the audience learns more about your ideas, they will sound more alluring.
- End â Describe how much better the world will be with your new ideas and provide a call to action. Your ideas shouldnât just benefit you, they should meet the needs of your audience, as well.
Remember to speak your audienceâs language. That means understanding their knowledge base and point of view, and meeting them at their level. For instance, in a data-driven report, donât include a lot of technical jargon if youâre presenting to people new to the field or from a different department.

Use presenter notes
A person can only absorb a certain amount of information at a time, so adding too much text to your presentation can be overwhelming for your audience (and is just bad design). Make sure to include the most essential pieces of information as text in your presentation. For everything else, use notes that only you can see.
Presenter notes help you to keep track of information and reference key points throughout your presentation. Having these available allow you to provide a more well-rounded experience for your audience, giving them the opportunity to absorb the essential information in your content and listen to you for more context. Presenter notes also act as a cheat sheet, should your audience ask questions or probe for more data.
You should practice delivering your presentation before the big day. Make sure you practice with your presenter notes to get the hang of referencing them without reading them verbatim. You donât want your eyes to be focused too much on your notes and not on your audience.

Prezi is a learning tool that requires patience. Prezi has been criticized for being difficult to use, so many people abandoned it in favor of classic PowerPoint.
Converting your Prezi into PPT
Prezi does not allow you to convert PowerPoint presentations (PPT), but there is a handy process that will make your persuasive presentation look great in no time.
1. Create your Prezi
Register a free Prezi account at Prezi.com to get started creating your Prezi. Premium accounts are available for those who have a limited budget.
2. Save your Prezi as PDF
Prezi offers several exporting options, including Download As PDF. Click on Share > Download as PDF to convert your presentation into a PDF.
3. Convert PDFs to JPGs
You have many options to convert PDFs into image formats, but there is a handy tool called Any Free PDF To JPG Converter. Alternatively, you can use Adobe Reader and Mac bundled software preview.
4. Make a presentation using JPGs
You can create a presentation using your favorite presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, PowerPoint for Mac, or Apple’s Keynote. You can create a new presentation template and insert your shiny new JPGs.
5. Slideshare your PowerPoint to Slideshare
Once you’ve created a new presentation, you can save it and upload it to Slideshare. Slideshare will make your work more searchable by adding links or notes.

It is impossible to convert a Prezi into PowerPoint by hand
The PDF file format attempts to preserve the original appearance of the file. All text and images are typically outlined in vector format. Prezi presentations exported to PDF will only contain slides in non-editable PDF format.
Normally, you can edit PDF files or the text within them. However, a Prezi PDF won’t allow you to edit any text.
Adobe offers a paid solution for converting PDFs to PowerPoint. However, you will need to sign up for a monthly subscription. The result will be the same as the one described below.
Prezi is still available as a PowerPoint PowerPoint file
It is possible to insert Prezis into PowerPoint for free if you are desperate. However, it won’t work completely automatically. Each slide will have images of your Prezi. There will be no editable text.
This will result in JPG images in PPT format. If you do need it, this is how to get it.
First: Export Prezi to PDF
First, go to the Editing mode in Prezi and click on the Share button. It is located at the top right corner. Click Download as.
Second: Copy each Slide to PowerPoint.
You will need to copy every slide from Prezi into PowerPoint. Open the PDF you have just created, and choose the slide you want to export to Prezi. Click on a slide to highlight it, and then press CTRL +C to copy it.
Open PowerPoint, then copy the code to the slide. Prezi supports both 16:9 and 4:3 slides and allows you to resize your image easily. PowerPoint’s snap feature allows you to easily adjust the image from only two corners.
This will be repeated for each slide. If you have many slides, it can be tedious. This is the best option if you have to present PowerPoint PPT files.

Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.
- Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
- Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
