New study suggests that too much TV really can rot your brain

Ryan Dougherty, a postdoctoral fellow in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has a warning for those zoning out in front of the boob tube: Excessive TV viewing might shrink your brain. Literally.

Drawing on data spanning 20 years, he led a study published in the September issue of Brain Imaging and Behavior suggesting that greater amounts of TV viewing can lead to reduced amounts of cranial gray matter—home to the neurons that perform the bulk of our mental processing.

"Individuals who watched, on average, about an hour and a half more daily television than their peers throughout mid-to-late adulthood saw their brain volume reduced by approximately .5% ," Dougherty says. "That percentage may seem small, but prevailing scientific thought says preserving our brain integrity can prolong the time until we notice age-related cognitive decline."

Working in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology, Dougherty calls himself a "physical activity and exercise scientist" interested in how walking, biking, swimming, and other aerobic activities support brain health and delay age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. (Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain, and theories suggest this may bring benefits, such as removing toxins and releasing hormones that trigger the creation of new neurons.) And unless your TV is mounted in front of a stationary bike, watching TV is a sedentary behavior—the pastime of proverbial couch potatoes.

His research utilized the ongoing longitudinal study Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults, or CARDIA , launched in 1985 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and involving more than 5,000 participants from four U.S. cities. Although it was designed to study how lifestyle choices can impact long-term cardiovascular health, aspects of the sizable and evolving study are of interest to cognitive health scientists as well, particularly a substudy of 599 participants who were given MRI scans in 2010. Every five years, CARDIA participants are asked to report the average number of hours of TV they watched daily over the previous year. Participants in the substudy were also given MRI scans when they reached age 50.

These participants reported watching a daily average of 2.5 hours of TV, which held steady across 20 years. Dougherty and his study colleagues analyzed the data to find that those engaging in 1.4 hours of additional daily viewing, or more, had a half percent reduction in gray matter on the MRI scan performed at age 50.

Curiously, while earlier research has established that regular physical activity can slow cognitive decline, those participants who reported engaging in both above-average TV viewing and regular exercise showed the same gray matter reductions. "It would suggest that just becoming more physically active alone is not going to negate the negative effects associated with television viewing," Dougherty says. (While the study wasn't able to determine what programming people watched, he hypothesizes that documentaries might be less brain- shrinking than reality TV or other fluff.)

Too much TV may be bad for your long-term brain health

The proof is in: tv really does rot your brain.

Mindful of his study's limitations, including its reliance on self-reporting, Dougherty isn't ready to definitively say binge-watching shrinks your brain. Still, he says, his findings contribute to a growing body of research warning about the dangers of excessive TV watching and echo research done by others using the longitudinal study's data that points to a correlation between excessive TV viewing and poorer performance on cognitive tests.

"We should be conscientious about our behaviors and try to decrease sedentary time and increase physical activity," Dougherty concludes. "Television viewing is just one type of sedentary behavior, but it's an easily modifiable one." (Indeed, recent studies suggest that other sedentary activities, such as board games and puzzles, might help preserve gray matter—put down the remote, pick up some crosswords.)

Just don't expect Netflix to make a documentary about all this. "No," Dougherty says with a laugh. "I don't think that would be good for business."

Why Television Is Bad for Your Health

The pandemic has caused people to stay at home more even with lockdown restrictions being slowly lifted around the world. Being at home has caused some people to binge-watch Netflix all day and night, or keep track of the news for updates on the pandemic.

As a result, most of us are glued to a screen for hours on end. However, two studies from the UK have revealed why television is bad for your health.

Why Television is Bad For Your Health

Deteriorating Memory

In 2019, a team from the University College of London discovered that adults with couch potato tendencies resulted in deteriorating memory. Watching for long periods would normally be accompanied by unhealthy eating.

Moreover, watching television for at least three hours a day resulted in as much as a 10% decrease in verbal memory. Time for stimulating activities such as exercise and reading would be neglected.

While many studies have focused on the cognitive effects of TV on children, the study  led by Dr. Daisy Fancourt focused on adults over 50. 'Overall, this suggests that adults over the age of 50 should try and ensure television viewing is balanced with other contrasting activities,' she said.

Her colleague Professor Andrew Steptoe described that older people lean towards soap operas because they may closely identify themselves with the characters. 'This may create cognitive stress which could contribute to memory decline.'

Severe Health Risks

Watching television, Netflix, Youtube, or a long period of screen time is directly associated with poor health. In a new study, scientists discovered that the health risks of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease were at low levels in adults who watched TV every day for less than two hours.

Recently published  in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the study by a team from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, described the ill effects of exposure to screen time. Unfortunately, along with traditional television, watching on mobile phones and tablets were included in the study.

The team tracked 500,000 participants comprised of middle-aged adults from 37 to 73. Between 2006 and 2018, they concluded that adults should minimize television exposure to two hours or less.

The researchers said that if people limited watching TV to two hours each day, almost 6% of all deaths can be prevented or delayed. Moreover, the time limit could also delay or prevent almost 8% of cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, unhealthy snacking and lower socioeconomic status were also associated with extended TV-watching. The sedentary lifestyle generally resulted in health decline.

Dr. Hamish Foster said, 'Our study suggests limiting TV time could delay or prevent a lot of adverse health . However, there is still more work to be done before we can make firm TV time recommendations. Further research is needed to understand all these factors and inform future advice and guidelines.'

Dr. Frank Hu from the Harvard School of Public health, said, 'The message is simple. Cutting back on TV watching can significantly reduce [the] risk of type 2 diabetes , heart disease, and premature mortality.'

You Are What You Watch? The Social Effects of TV

There’s new evidence that viewing habits can affect your thinking, political preferences, even cognitive ability.

Other than sleeping and working, Americans are more likely to watch television than engage in any other activity .

A wave of new social science research shows that the quality of shows can influence us in important ways, shaping our thinking and political preferences, even affecting our cognitive ability.

In this so-called golden age of television , some critics have pointed out that the best of the form is equivalent to the most enriching novels. And high-quality programming for children can be educational. But the latest evidence also suggests there can be negative consequences to our abundant watching, particularly when the shows are mostly entertainment.

The harm seems to come not so much from the content itself but from the fact that it replaces more enlightening ways of spending time.

‘Sesame Street’ as a social experiment

Cognitive ability is a complex characteristic that emerges from interactions between biological dispositions, nutrition and health, parenting behaviors, formal and informal educational opportunities, and culture.

Studying the connection between intelligence and television consumption is far from straightforward, but researchers have developed compelling ways to isolate the effects of television.

Some of the best research has been done on the television program “Sesame Street.” The show, which began in 1969, was meant to develop early literacy, numeracy and emotional skills for children of preschool age. A detailed analysis of the show’s content in its first and second years reveals that 80 percent of the program was dedicated to those goals, with the rest meant to entertain.

Researchers randomly assigned groups of low-income children age 3 to 5 into an experimental group and a control group. In the experimental group, parents were given access to the show if they lacked it and encouraged in person once a month to have their children watch the show.

Almost all (93 percent) parents of children in the experimental group reported that their children subsequently watched the show, compared with roughly one-third of children in the control group (35 percent). Among watchers, those in the experimental group also watched more frequently.

Over six months, from November 1970 to May 1971, the experimental group gained 5.4 I.Q. points — a large effect — relative to the control group and showed stronger evidence of learning along several other dimensions. Gains in cognitive performance were especially large for those who viewed the show frequently relative to those who did so rarely or never. A more recent meta-analysis of published research in 15 countries shows that “Sesame Street” has similar effects around the world.

In newly published research , the economists Melissa Kearney and Phillip Levine examined longer-term effects of “Sesame Street” by comparing the educational outcomes of children and young adults in counties more or less likely to have access to the program during its early years. They found that children living in counties with better “Sesame Street” coverage were less likely to be held behind a grade level.

Other experimental research is consistent with the original “Sesame Street” findings. Low-income prekindergarten children scored higher on a social competence index six months after being randomly assigned to an experimental group, in which their parents were encouraged to replace age-inappropriate television with educational television.

Less reading and more watching

In Norway, and a handful of other developed countries, average I.Q. scores have declined slightly in recent years, after rising for many decades. This is known as the negative Flynn effect, a variation of the more famous Flynn effect , which is named after the psychologist who first published comprehensive evidence of I.Q. gains over time. Among native Norwegian men taking an exam at age 18 for military conscription, those born in 1974 scored two I.Q. points higher than those born in 1987.

In an academic article published this year, the Norwegian economist Oystein Hernaes and his co-authors attributed some of this decline in I.Q. scores to access to cable television, which also coincided with a sharp decline in reading. After the introduction of cable in 1981, Norwegian teenagers and young adults drastically cut back on daily time spent reading from 1980 to 2000, and increased their time watching TV. Moreover, relative to public television, cable television had far less educational content and was focused on entertainment and advertisements.

To estimate the effect of cable television on I.Q. scores, the Norwegian scholars analyzed data on the introduction of cable network infrastructure by municipality. They calculated years of exposure to cable by considering the age of eventual test takers when cable became available in their municipality. They controlled for any potential geographic bias by comparing siblings with greater or less exposure to cable television based on their age when cable infrastructure was put in.

They estimate that 10 years of exposure to cable television lowered I.Q. scores by 1.8 points. In related research , Mr. Hernaes finds that exposure to cable television reduced voter turnout in local elections.

Berlusconi television

A similar study was conducted by the Italian economist Ruben Durante and his co-authors and released in this month’s issue of the American Economic Review. They examined the introduction of Silvio Berlusconi’s television network, Mediaset, which specialized in light entertainment such as game shows featuring scantily clad women.

The economists document that Mediaset devoted almost no programming to educational content and did not offer news in early years, whereas its main competitor — the state-owned channel — devoted the majority of its airtime to news or educational material.

To study the effects of Mediaset, Mr. Durante and his co-authors obtained data on the location of Mediaset transmitters in 1985 and calculated the strength of the broadcasting signal in every Italian municipality based on the position of the transmitters and other technical features of the municipality.

They found that children raised in areas with greater access to Mediaset (a standard deviation in signal strength) had lower cognitive scores as adults by the equivalent of 3 to 4 I.Q. points.

People more exposed to Mediaset as children were also less likely to be civically engaged adults and more likely to vote for parties with populist tendencies like Forza Italia and the Five Star Movement.

A handful of American studies along these lines have focused on the political consequences that news media coverage can have, showing that exposure to Fox News could increase Republican Party vote shares significantly, and that exposure to MSNBC increased Democratic Party voting share (but with a much weaker effect).

Art and public health

We know that education increases cognitive ability, so it stands to reason that educational television would also have a positive effect.

Concerns about culture are hardly novel: Plato made a case for regulating the quality of artistic productions to avoid the corruption of youth and weakening of their character. Twenty-three centuries later, it is easier than ever to placate children as well as lose yourself in entertainment options — in the ocean of online videos, podcasts, cable, and streaming shows and movies.

These options are most likely harmless. Some provide relaxation, and others may modestly reshape cultural attitudes for the better; one study found that the introduction of cable TV empowered women in India. High-quality shows and films can be inspiring, even edifying.

Still, media providers and advertisers compete aggressively for our attention. Most lack the altruistic motivations that guided the producers of the original “Sesame Street.” The evidence from social science suggests that biased or sensationalist news programs may misinform citizens or discourage civic engagement, and that we should also be cautious about what we give up for the sake of entertainment.

How To Break the Habit

The streaming era has changed everything about the way people view television. You no longer have to wait for a new episode of your favorite show because many entertainment companies are releasing entire seasons and series of shows at once. This has lead to a new concept called binge-watching .

Binge-watching—the act of streaming many television episodes in one sitting­­—is become more and more common with all the streaming options available to consumers, including Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video, among others. You can stream these services on your television or on another electronic device, such as a laptop, tablet, or cell phone.

But as great as all these options might sound, health experts warn that because people are replacing time once spent exercising, socializing, and sleeping, they are increasing their risk for many serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease (heart disease) , depression , sleep problems , and behavioral addictions.

Much of the research on the health effects of binge-watching is new, but what is available does focus on and raise some serious health considerations. Here is what you need to know about the health risks associated with binge-watching and what you can do to cut down your TV time and potentially reduce your risk for adverse health outcomes. 

Binge-watching has become common behavior. In fact, a 2018 poll found that 60% of American adults who use on-demand streaming services binge watch. Percentages are higher with younger audiences, with 73% of 18 to 29-year-olds binge-watching at least once a week.

Binge-watching behavior has health consequences and researchers from Arizona State University were determined to figure out what exactly these might be. Their study results are published in the August 2020 journal BMC Public Health . Here, they sent out an 18-question survey to 926 adults who had a television and at least one more device they used to stream television shows. 

Researchers wanted to know how much time people were spending on their devices, their weight, what their diets looked like, how much sleep they got and the quality of that sleep, how much stress they incurred day-to-day, and their physical activity levels, and binge-watching habits.

What the researchers found was the heaviest screen time watchers were averaging about 17.5 hours per day across all devices. These users also reported the least healthful diets and poorest health outcomes in comparison to those who were moderate or light screen users.

The researchers also noted that heavy screen time habits can lead to unhealthy diet patterns like frequent fast-food consumption and eating family meals in front of a television. Heavy screen time use was also associated with perceived stress.

Arizona State University researchers concluded poor diet and negative health consequences would become more evident as viewing time increased. They also felt more research was needed to better understand what types of screen-related behaviors might affect health behaviors and outcomes. 

Potential Health Consequences

Over time, binge-watching may harm your health in ways you may not expect. Among the concerns researchers have raised are decreased physical activity, sleep problems and fatigue, blood clots , heart problems, poor diet, social isolation, behavioral addiction, and cognitive decline.

Physical Inactivity

According to the National Institutes for Health (NIH), a mostly sedentary lifestyle is causally linked to a number of poor health outcomes, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, strokes, excessive weight gain, and mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

The more sedentary you are, the higher your risks are for these conditions. A sedentary lifestyle can also increase your risk of premature death.

A study reported in April 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research suggested a comparison between active sitting, such as working at a computer at a desk, and nonactive sitting like watching television. Non-active sitting, as the researchers suggest, might be linked to up to a 25% higher body mass index (BMI) and body fat in younger adults.

The connection between BMI and body fat wasn’t as high with active sitting. And here, researchers stressed the importance of reallocating sedentary time to active time in order to reduce the risk for conditions associated with inactive sitting. 

An Unhealthy Diet 

Binge-watching is also linked to unhealthy diet habits, according to researchers from the University of Michigan. At the 67th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (2017), researchers discussed the link between binge-watching and poor lifestyle choices.

Here, they noted that binge-watching encouraged foregoing sleep, consumption of unhealthy meals, unhealthy snacking, and sedentary behavior.

A study reported in March 2020 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition associated television watching with distraction eating.  And distraction eating, according to the researchers, leads to overeating and weight gain.

Distraction eating usually involves food choices that are not the healthiest and may include things like junk foods, sugary beverages, and alcoholic drinks.

When people are eating this way daily or nightly, this starts to add up, eventually causing weight gain and increased risk for related health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Sleep Problems and Fatigue 

You need sleep because it plays an important role in your mental and physical health and your quality of life. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), sleep is necessary for proper brain function, maintaining physical health, and promoting healthy growth and development in children and teens.

Sleep deficiency can lead to serious mental and physical health problems, injuries, loss of productivity, and a higher risk for early death.

An August 2017 report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine , finds binge-watching is connected to poorer sleep quality, increased fatigue, and insomnia symptoms. Here, the researchers found a state of engagement while binge-watching doesn’t allow the brain to shut itself down.

As a result, it takes longer to fall asleep, and if you are falling asleep closer to morning and not getting the amount of sleep your body needs, the body unable to do necessary restoration and repair work.

Blood Clots

Hours you spend binge-watching your favorite series might feel great, but your blood vessels might not agree. In a 2018 study reported in the Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis , researchers found prolonged sitting for binge-watching is similar to prolonged sedentary behavior for long flights or during illness—it can increase the risk for deep-vein thrombosis (DVT).  

DVT is a blood clot in the leg that can be fatal if it travels to the heart or lungs.

In this study, researchers found people who were sitting for long periods while watching and streaming television had an up to 70% higher risk for developing a blood clot than people who seldom watched TV.   And that risk remains even if a person is not overweight and still being physically active.

Heart Health

Sitting for long periods can affect your heart health, and certain activities might be worse than others.

A study reported in 2019 in the Journal of the American Heart Association aimed to compare two types of sedentary behavior—TV watching versus occupational sitting, such as at a desk job. The goal of the study was to determine if these activities were equally harmful or if one was more harmful than the other.

Researchers found that excessive television viewing was associated with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and all-cause mortality (death rate from all causes) while occupational sitting wasn't associated with either outcome.

Regularly watching four or more hours a day of television could increase the risk for CVD or early death by up 50%, compared to people who are watching two or fewer hours daily. They concluded that reducing the amount of time watching TV was more effective for reducing CVD and morality risks than reducing occupational sitting.

Social Isolation

People who binge-watch tend to do so in solitude and researchers believe the more people binge-watch the more they isolate themselves. According to a report in the December 2017 issue of the Journal of Behavioral Addictions, links exist between social isolation, binge-watching, and poor mental health outcomes.

While the report’s authors did not specifically dive into those links, they confirmed how easily binge watching could become addictive and overtake a person’s social life. They concluded by noting the importance of managing these growing problematic behaviors.

Another study—this one from 2015 out of the University of Texas Austin—found people who are lonely and depressed were more likely to binge-watch, and the lonelier and more depressed someone is, the more binge-watching they will do.

Binge-watching among the study group was found to be a way to manage negative feelings. and those who struggled with self-regulation were more likely to binge-watch. The researchers suggested that binge-watching was particularly concerning here because the effects of watching too much television while dealing with feelings of loneliness and depression could lead to physical fatigue , obesity, and other serious health problems.

They further noted that binge-watching could affect work responsibilities and personal relationships because it could cause people to neglect these things.

Behavioral Addictions

Binge-watching might be considered a behavioral addiction. Having a behavioral addiction means you are dependent on and crave a particular behavior.   Behavioral addictions can include anything from gambling to sex and videogames and yes, even, binge-watching.

According to a 2017 report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine , binge-watching may affect the pleasure centers of the brain in some people in the same way that other addictions would.   Binge-watching might give a sense of satisfaction causing a person to overindulge to the point that binge-watching affects daily activities and commitments, including work and school.

A review of studies on television addiction from 2013 in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions suggests dependence features of TV watching make it difficult to stop.   These factors resemble neurological features seen in addiction.

According to the review’s authors, people who spend a lot of time watching television can experience various role, social, and sedentary physical consequences when their viewing is not under control. And as with other addictions, binge-watching isn’t their only addiction. Here, the review’s authors suggest this evidence is an indication of a credible need for prevention and treatment approaches to television addiction.

Cognitive Decline 

If you are spending hours binge-watching, you may want to consider the effect this may have on your brain health. A study reported in 2019 in the journal Scientific Reports suggests binge-watching could lead to cognitive decline down the road.  

In this study, researchers used data from 3,000 adults over age 50 who were watching more than 3.5 hours of television daily. They found watching this amount of TV was associated with poor verbal memory after six years and this effect was strongest for people who had initially performed better at the start of the study.

The researchers suggest that instead of spending long hours watching TV, people should engage themselves in mind-building activities. This includes activities like reading, puzzles, games, and physical exercise. 

The best way to reduce the effects of binge-watching is to make television watching an occasional pleasure and not an everyday thing. Some ways to break this habit include:

  • Limiting yourself : You may want to watch a small number of episodes, i.e., two episodes of a show at a time. Once you have reached your limit, turn the TV off and find something else to do.
  • Setting a time limit : Decide on an appropriate amount of time you will watch television every night. Then set an alarm or timer to keep yourself stay on course.
  • Finding a balance : Balance your TV-watching with other activities, including exercise, reading, a hobby, or spending time with a friend.
  • Making TV watching a social thing : If you invite someone else to watch with you, you likely won’t spend as much time watching and you won’t get sucked into hours of streaming. 
  • Making sure you have a bedtime : Binge-watching can cause you to sacrifice hours of sleep, which can affect you the next day and harm you in the long-term. It might help to set a bedtime alarm, so you don’t lose track of time watching television.
  • Deciding to snack healthy : Rather than eating unhealthy snacks while watching TV, opt for snacks that have more nutritional value. Fruits and vegetables are healthier options over salty, fatty foods.

There is nothing wrong with sitting down to catch up on your favorite show or watching an entire season over an occasional weekend. But when you start to have trouble taking care of your responsibilities and giving up on other activities, including time with family and friends, your TV time can become a serious problem.

If you find your TV viewing starts to have a negative impact on your health, your relationships and keeps you from living your life, talk to a therapist. This is especially important if you are unable to reduce your streaming time on your own.

The Real Reason Why TV Is Bad for the Kids

In the same way that we know that we should be eating lots of fruits and vegetables and limiting sweets, we all know that kids should spend a lot of time with books — and relatively little time with TV.

But why? Can't kids learn just as much from TV as they do from books?

There is no doubt that TV can be educational. But one of the unforeseen consequences of TV viewing is reducing how much parents talk with their children. And diminished parent-child interaction can have negative effects on children, especially when they are young.

In a recent study of toddlers and preschoolers, we observed mothers and their children while they read books, watched a prosocial TV program, or played with toys. We found TV viewing suppressed both the amount and quality of mother-child communication.

That is, moms made relatively few comments to their children while co-viewing. When they did speak, their comments were often unrelated to what their child said, thereby creating an unproductive exchange that could hinder children's opportunity for learning.

Moms who read books to their children, however, not only talked significantly more but also used a very high-quality form of communication that included asking questions, labeling objects, affirming their child, and responding to their child's statements or questions with relevant information.

It is important to note that the increased quantity and quality of communication was not due to the fact that moms were reading the words on the pages. Instead, this difference reflected the communication that occurred above and beyond the actual reading that the mother did with the child.

Playing with toys also elicited a high amount of communication, including some high-quality forms of interaction. Although not better than books, toy playing was significantly better than shared TV viewing at encouraging communication.

With these results in mind, let's consider the child who spends a good chunk of the day watching TV. From this perspective, the problem is not necessarily what content, either good or bad, the child has experienced (of course, content does make a difference too). Instead, the problem is what this child is missing.

Young children who watch lots of TV may be missing out on valuable — even crucial — interactions with parents during a critical point in their development. Parent-child interaction, even with children who can't yet speak, is vital to children's healthy development.

The American Academy of Pediatrics just released their updated TV guidelines for children ages 2 and under. In their statement, they discourage all TV viewing for children in this age group. Part of the justification for their recommendation is that TV viewing reduces parent-child communication.

Some parents may believe that they can't offer their children the kinds of educational experiences that TV provides. But they are wrong. Children learn the best from real people, especially people who are important to them.

When parents talk with their children, they not only promote their language development but also teach their children that they are valued and important. Reading books and turning off the TV can facilitate these positive interactions.

1. It may expand your waistline Here's another reason to skip the commercials, in addition to watching less TV: “Most people think, 'Well you spend a lot of time sitting around, so you gain weight.' But most of the impact is just because of the marketing and advertising during that time that tends to increase intake of a range of unhealthy food products,” says Steve Gortmaker, a professor of the practice of health sociology in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

2. Binge-watching may increase your risk for diabetes Research on people at higher risk for developing diabetes found that for each hour spent watching TV per day, the risk of developing the disease increased 3.4 percent. Rather than focusing on what participants watched, Andrea Kriska, an epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh and senior author of the research published in April in the journal Diabetologia, says TV watching was tracked as an indicator of time people spent sitting. Lead author Bonny Rockette-Wagner says other research seems to indicate that we move even less while watching TV compared with other sedentary activities, like sitting at work.

3. It may be bad for baby-making Although there’s evidence that watching TV , including in the bedroom, could increase amorousness, a Harvard study found that men who watched more than 20 hours of television per week had 44 percent fewer sperm than guys who didn’t watch TV. Increased activity, by comparison, was associated with higher sperm counts. Previous research also associates prolonged TV viewing with increased risk of heart disease, which, for men, is also associated with higher rates of impotence.

4. It could damage your relationships The more you believe in popular portrayals of romance on television, the less committed you may be to your real relationship, according to research published several years ago in the journal Mass Communication and Society. That ranges from unrealistic expectations of a spouse to seeing the “costs” of real relationships – such as the loss of time or freedom – as being higher, which could undermine what’s happening between the two of you in real life.

5. It could stunt a child's first words At an early age, Americans start tuning in to TV – and now other media, as kids play with smartphones. But while a FaceTime session with a family member might be OK, for the littlest among us, television can be bad news. “Television exposure before age 2 is strongly correlated with decreased language development,” says David L. Hill, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communications and Media. “We continue to advise parents not to have the television on or use television [and] movies routinely to entertain children under age 2.” 6. It could increase aggression Children internalize cues, experts say, from what they see on TV to video games. “The relationship between violent media use and aggression and desensitization to violence is as strong as or stronger than the relationship between smoking and lung cancer,” says Hill, author of “Dad to Dad: Parenting Like A Pro.” Not all children are affected in the same way, he adds, but exposure to violence in media makes kids more likely to accept it in their daily lives. Research shows that early exposure to TV violence also makes it likelier that kids will grow up to be aggressive adults.

It's isolating The results of research presented earlier this year at the annual Conference of the International Communication Association in San Juan, Puerto Rico, found that feelings of loneliness and depression were linked to watching television. While the research didn’t conclude that TV watching caused the issues, researcher Yoon Hi Sung said in a statement that binge-watching shouldn’t be viewed as a harmless addiction; other experts say increased use of electronics can further isolate individuals or promote antisocial behavior.

8. It can rob us of sleep Glued to the TV? Screen time from the TV to tablet – to the TV shows we watch on the tablet – can make it harder to unwind, cutting into precious sleep, as technology continues its creep into every aspect of our waking lives. One simple tip from the pros for adults and kids: Move the TV out of the bedroom – and don’t watch it there on mobile devices, either.

9. It could shorten our lives A study of healthy young adults found that watching lots of TV is associated with premature death. The research, published last year in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that participants who reported watching three hours or more of TV per day had twice the risk of dying during the 8-year follow-up period than those who said they didn’t watch more than 1 hour per day. There is no denying the fact that television makes our lives more enjoyable. Everyone likes to sit in front of their television sets. This, however, does not mean that all that time spent watching TV is good for us. In my opinion, watching TV is good provided that we choose the programs wisely.

Television provides both education and entertainment. There are several informative programs and channels. There are also a large number of channels that only provide mindless entertainment. If we want to benefit from television, we need to choose the programs wisely. There are plenty of informative programs that also provide a reasonable amount of entertainment. For example, the channels Discovery and Animal Planet provide entertainment as well as information. We can learn a lot of things by just watching these channels. Likewise, news channels keep us informed of national and international events. But if we spend the whole day watching the reruns of mega serials, we aren’t going to be any wiser.

For most people, television is merely a tool for obtaining entertainment. They aren’t looking for information. They just want to kill time and that isn’t such a bad thing. There is no harm in using the television as an entertainment tool. We only need to limit the time spent in front of the idiot box. If we set aside enough time for other more important activities like work or studies, television will have no negative impact on us.

To conclude, I neither agree nor disagree with the argument that watching television is good for us. It depends on what we watch and how much we watch. If we limit our screen time and choose the programs and channels wisely, television will be good for us.

Television comes with enormous advantages. The most important is it gives us information about current affairs and events across the globe. It also shares information about multiple programmes or facilities launched by the government. The government also take the help of news channels to communicate with the mass.

We can watch daily soaps, reality shows, music channels, movies, etc. We can also watch food channels and try out recipes at home. During the morning time, if you switch on the television, you will get to watch telemarketing ads. Specific channels broadcast only ads for multiple products, and people can also buy them.

Children can watch various cartoons on the television. Some cartoons teach children about moral values and lessons. It also keeps us informed about the economic condition and the stock market. We also get to watch various fashion shows and keep updated about the latest trends on television.

Earlier, television was costly, but now it comes at an affordable price with multiple features. Now, we get the option to subscribe to our favourite channels and only need to pay for those channels. Educational programmes are also available on television. We can also watch live cricket shows and cheer for our country. Television also telecasts interviews of various political leaders, celebrities, influencers, famous personalities, etc. We can also gain knowledge by watching various quiz programmes.

Television provides opportunities to spend time with our family and friends. We can enjoy watching a movie together. Various channels telecast comedy shows that help us keep positivity in our lives. We also watch movies in different regional languages like Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, etc. It helps us connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

Nowadays, we can also play games on the television and watch agricultural programmes specially designed for the farmers. It promotes national integration.

Disadvantages of Television

There are advantages of watching television, but it also comes with disadvantages. Watching too much TV affects our mental and physical health. When we watch television continuously, it affects our eyes and makes us lazy. Even there are some programmes which are not suitable for kids. We even compromise our sleep to watch TV. Children lose their concentration on their studies by watching too much television. Children prefer to watch TV over reading books to spend their leisure time.

TV Is Extremely Harmful to Children Essay

The television has been long called the “idiot box” by people and experts who believe that children who spend most of their time watching the tube do not get anything educationally nor physically beneficial for themselves. In my opinion, television watching could prove to be either detrimental or beneficial to children. But, that would all depend upon how the parents implement discipline regarding television watching time. Remember that anything in excess is considered harmful. Unfortunately, most parents, nannies, and caregivers consider the telly to be a highly effective method of controlling their wards. The mindless entertainment keeps their charges occupied, allowing them to attend to other chores. What they do not realize is that the children whom they entrust to the moving screen are at an impressionable age wherein they consider everything they see on television to be a part of reality because nobody is there to tell them otherwise.

Parents are usually very concerned about the amount of sexually or violence-oriented television existing on the airwaves. But, they do not try to limit nor screen the viewing habits of their children. We already know that sex and violence are stapled ingredients of most shows these days and that at least 61 percent will contain graphic and heavy violence. Statistics collated by Dr. Michael W. Smith for his article “Is TV So Bad For Kids,” which was published in 2002, gave horrifying statistics for how much violence we consciously expose our children to on a daily basis. He explained that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, ” a child who watches three to four hours a day of non-educational TV will see about 8,000 small-screen murders by the time he or she completes grade school.” This means that our children waste about 15 hours a day watching television without really understanding nor asking their parents about what they are seeing. Television is a highly educational tool, and most children tend to believe everything they see on it because their logic and sense of reasoning do not really exist at such young ages.

In the year 2007, Dr. Aric Sigman authored a study that was published in the science journal Biology . He clearly listed at least 15 negative side effects that television viewing has on youngsters that range anywhere from short-sightedness, obesity, short attention spans, premature puberty, and in some severe cases, autism. Dr. Sigman shared that the only way to counter these dire effects is by “judiciously” allowing television watching time and calling the parent’s attention to the fact that they have been abdicating their parental responsibility of raising their child and will result in the worst kind of hands-off parenting. More disconcerting to me is the fact that an average six years old will have watched the equivalent of one year of unsupervised television and that unregulated viewing habits can cause the suppression of the melatonin hormone in the body, an important chemical that is necessary for the performance of the immune system and sleeps cycle.

Too much television watching also has severe negative effects on the psyche of a child. The violence he is exposed to causes inexplicable hostility, fear, anxiety, depression, nightmares, and post-traumatic stress disorders. How many times have we read about the horrifying school massacres that are enacted by seemingly nice kids who were being bullied in school? How many of them have decided that the best way to end the abuse was to do what they saw on television? Yes, loss of life is also a direct and horrific end result of too much television viewing. I believe that this is because there comes a time when children to are abused and bullied either at home or at school tend to tune out by watching television. This becomes their safe place, their best friend, and to a certain extent, their adviser about life as well. This goes on and on until such a time that they think to themselves that anything they see being done on television must be the right thing to do. Now, more than ever, it has become more important to regulate the television exposure of our children. There is enough sex and violence in the world, and the last thing we need is to have those vivid images influence the young minds who were born into this world as a blank slate, ready and willing to be written upon by the parents and other influential people. It saddens me that most of the information that gets listed on that slate is the wrong kind, the detrimental sort of information that will lead our children down the wrong road.

In the end, we all realize that television viewing is highly harmful to our children. But why do most parents choose to turn a blind eye to it? Then, later on, they cry out that they do not know why their children turned out a certain negative way? Television has existed for almost a hundred years now, and it will only continue to become a larger influence on the lives of future generations. The responsibility of limiting the negative effects of television watching will always rest on the shoulders of the parents. Therefore parents must make the extra effort to know the media their children watch and educate them regarding responsible television viewing.

How the internet—and Stephen Colbert—hounded Kate Middleton into revealing her diagnosis

For many years, the most-complained-about cover of the British satirical magazine Private Eye was the one it published in the week after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. At the time, many people in Britain were loudly revolted by the tabloid newspapers that had hounded Diana after her divorce from Charles, and by the paparazzi whose quest for profitable pictures of the princess ended in an underpass in Paris.

Under the headline “Media to Blame,” the Eye cover carried a photograph of a crowd outside Buckingham Palace, with three speech bubbles. The first was: “The papers are a disgrace.” The next two said: “Yeah, I couldn’t get one anywhere” and “Borrow mine, it’s got a picture of the car.” People were furious. Sacks of angry, defensive mail arrived for days afterward, and several outlets withdrew the magazine from sale. (I am an Eye contributor, and these events have passed into office legend.) But with the benefit of hindsight, the implication was accurate: Intruding on the private lives of the royals is close to a British tradition. We Britons might have the occasional fit of remorse, but that doesn’t stop us. And now, because of the internet, everyone else can join in too.

That cover instantly sprang to mind when, earlier today, the current Princess of Wales announced that she has cancer. In a video recorded on Wednesday in Windsor, the former Kate Middleton outlined her diagnosis in order to put an end to weeks of speculation, largely incubated online but amplified and echoed by mainstream media outlets, about the state of her health and marriage.

Kate has effectively been bullied into this statement, because the alternative—a wildfire of gossip and conspiracy theories—was worse. So please, let’s not immediately switch into maudlin recriminations about how this happened. It happened because people felt they had the right to know Kate’s private medical information. The culprits may include three staff members at the London hospital that treated her, who have been accused of accessing her medical records, perhaps driven by the same curiosity that has lit up my WhatsApp inbox for weeks. Everyone hates the tabloid papers, until they become them.

In her statement, Kate said that after her abdominal surgery earlier in the year, which the press was told at the time was “planned”—a word designed to minimize its seriousness—later tests revealed an unspecified cancer. She is now undergoing “preventative chemotherapy,” but has not revealed the progression of the disease, or her exact prognosis. “I am well,” she said, promising that she is getting stronger every day. “I hope you will understand that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

This news will surely make many people feel bad. The massive online guessing game about the reasons for Kate’s invisibility seems far less fun now. Stephen Colbert’s “spilling the tea” monologue , which declared open season on the princess’s marriage, should probably be quietly interred somewhere. The sad simplicity of today’s statement, filmed on a bench with Kate in casual jeans and a striped sweater, certainly gave me pause. She mentioned the difficulty of having to “process” the news, as well as explaining her condition to her three young children in terms they could understand. The reference to the importance of “having William by my side” was pointed, given how much of the speculation has gleefully dwelt on the possibility that she was leaving him or vice versa.

However, the statement also reveals that the online commentators who suggested that the royal household was keeping something from the public weren’t entirely wrong. Kate’s condition was described as noncancerous when her break from public life was announced in late January . The updated diagnosis appears to have been delivered in February, around the time her husband, Prince William, abruptly pulled out of speaking at a memorial service for the former king of Greece. Today’s statement represents a failure of Kensington Palace to control the narrative: first, by publishing a photograph of Kate and her children that was so obviously edited that photo agencies retracted it, and second, by giving its implicit permission for the publication of a grainy video of the couple shopping in Windsor over the weekend. Neither of those decisions quenched the inferno raging online—in fact, they fed it.

Some will say that Kate has finally done what she should have done much earlier: directly address the rumors in an official video, rather than drip-feed images that raised more questions than they answered. King Charles III has taken a different approach to his own (also unspecified) cancer, allowing footage to be filmed of him working from home. But then again, Kate has cancer at 42, is having chemo, and has three young children. Do you really have it in you to grade her media strategy and find it wanting?

Ironically, Britain’s tabloid papers have shown remarkable restraint; as I wrote earlier this month , they declined to publish the first paparazzi pictures of Kate taken after her withdrawal from public life. They have weighted their decisions toward respect and dignity—more so than the Meghan stans, royal tea-spillers, and KateGate theorists, who have generated such an unstoppable wave of interest in this story that its final destination was a woman with cancer being forced to reveal her diagnosis. If you ever wanted proof that the “mainstream media” are less powerful than ever before, this video of Kate Middleton sitting on a bench is it.

Does your Pixel 8 stutter while scrolling? Google has good and bad news

Since the fall of last year, I've noticed an odd stuttering issue on my Pixel 8 Pro display as I scroll through content. It's not too bad, but once you've become aware of it, you can't avoid seeing it. Some users have complained the issue is more obvious on apps like Reddit, Chrome, the Play Store, and Google News. Personally, I've found it more pronounced in the Google News (which I use regularly) and Facebook apps.

The good news is that Google is aware of the problem and has even marked it as "fixed" on their  issue tracker  (as first reported by Android Police ).

The bad news is that Google is apparently not fixing the issue in Android 14 (where it's currently happening). Instead, the fix will arrive with Android 15, which is slated for release in late summer or fall 2024.

Despite being marked as "Fixed," there is no status update for the original posting, which was added on October 14, 2023. The five videos that clearly demonstrate the issue in that original posting are restricted, so only certain users can view them. If you scroll through the list of replies to the issue, however, you'll see that many users are experiencing the problem.

There is one comment (#231) in the issue tracker thread posted from a google.com address (meaning it's an official Google employee). That comment reads: "Ongoing optimizations in performance and power are slated for the next Android release. These include improvements positively impacting overall system UI jank as well as use cases tied to some Android applications."

This is good news and makes me think we can expect to see considerable, overall improvements to performance and responsiveness in Android 15.

Christians around the world observe Good Friday two days before Easter, but what is it, and why do they commemorate the holy day?

The holiday is part of Holy Week, which leads up to Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday kicks off the series of Christian holy days that commemorate the Crucifixion and celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection.

"Good Friday has been, for centuries now, the heart of the Christian message because it is through the death of Jesus Christ that Christians believe that we have been forgiven of our sins," Daniel Alvarez, an associate teaching professor of religious studies at Florida International University, told USA TODAY.

When is Good Friday?

Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter. It's the second-to-last day of Holy Week.

In 2024, Good Friday will fall on March 29.

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is the day Christ was sacrificed on the cross. According to Britannica , it is a day for "sorrow, penance, and fasting."

"Good Friday is part of something else," Gabriel Radle, an assistant professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, previously told USA TODAY. "It's its own thing, but it's also part of something bigger."

Are Good Friday and Passover related?

Alvarez says that Good Friday is directly related to the Jewish holiday, Passover.

Passover , or Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt.

"The whole Christian idea of atoning for sin, that Jesus is our atonement, is strictly derived from the Jewish Passover tradition," said Alvarez.

How is that possible?

According to the professor, Passover celebrates the day the "Angel of Death" passed over the homes of Israelites who were enslaved by the Egyptians. He said that the Bible states when the exodus happened, families were told to paint their doors with lamb's blood so that God would spare the lives of their firstborn sons.

Alvarez says this is why Christians call Jesus the "lamb of God." He adds that the symbolism of the "blood of the lamb" ties the two stories together and is why Christians believe God sacrificed his firstborn son. Because, through his blood, humanity is protected from the "wrath of a righteous God that cannot tolerate sin."

He adds that the stories of the exodus and the Crucifixion not only further tie the stories together but also emphasize just how powerful the sacrifice of the firstborn and the shedding of blood are in religion.

"Jesus is the firstborn, so the whole idea of the death of the firstborn is crucial," said Alvarez.

He adds that the sacrifice of the firstborn, specifically a firstborn son, comes from an ancient and "primitive" idea that the sacrifice unleashes "tremendous power that is able to fend off any kind of force, including the wrath of God."

Why Is Good Friday so somber?

Alavarez says people might think this holiday is more depressing or sad than others because of how Catholics commemorate the Crucifixion.

"I think [it's] to a level that some people might think is morbid," said Alvarez.

He said Catholics not only meditate on Jesus' death, but primarily focus on the suffering he faced in the events that led up to his Crucifixion. That's what makes it such a mournful day for people.

But, the professor says that Jesus' suffering in crucial to Christianity as a whole.

"The suffering of Christ is central to the four Gospels," said Alvarez. "Everything else is incidental."

According to the professor, statues that use blood to emphasize the way Jesus and Catholic saints suffered is very common in Spanish and Hispanic Countries, but not as prevalent in American churches.

Do you fast on Good Friday?

Father Dustin Dought, the executive director of the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, previously told USA TODAY that Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the two days in the year that Roman Catholics are obliged to fast.

"This practice is a way of emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with God," said Dought.

Many Catholics do not eat meat on any Friday during Lent. Anything with flesh is off-limits. Dought says this practice is to honor the way Jesus sacrificed his flesh on Good Friday.

Peak TV may have peaked, but there’s still enough overwhelming volume on the small screen that I was able to watch AMC ‘s Parish while pondering a very niche-y question: Was this the best American cable adaptation of a far more efficient British drama about a guilt-stricken father, played by a star of Breaking Bad , leaving a life of comfortable legitimacy to wallow in a New Orleans criminal underbelly overseen by a member of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s The Post ?

While it’s possible to acknowledge small attempts from the Parish creative team to give their series the occasional distinctive element, there’s finally only one reason to sit through this choppy, excessively familiar six-parter: After building a deservedly successful brand of smooth and simmering intensity, Giancarlo Esposito gets to, at age 65, become an emotionally volcanic leading man.

There is some awesomeness in watching Esposito tear into this opportunity — he bellows, he bawls, he kicks butt — but the rest of the show offers less awe and more yawn.

Esposito plays Gracián Parish, whom nearly everybody calls “Gray,” even though if I knew anybody named “Gracián,” that’s all I’d call them. (That nobody within the show acknowledges that Gray’s last name is a regional districting pun that opens the door for my Paris-set drama focused on private investigator Jacques Arrondissement, who puts the pain in pain au chocolat .)

Gray runs a luxury car service out of New Orleans, but business is bad, what with rideshare companies, New Orleans’ economy and the fact that Gray is still deeply grieving his son (Caleb Baumann’s Maddox), who was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances eight months earlier. Gray is too preoccupied to notice that his wife, Rose (Paula Malcomson), and daughter, Mac (Arica Himmel), are still hurting as well and might be hankering to leave the city behind.

Colin needs Gray’s particular set of skills to get him out of a scrape, but once Gray proves his usefulness, remaining on the straight-and-narrow becomes impossible — especially when local kingmaker Anton (Bradley Whitford), another human trafficker and another former Gray cohort, steps back into the picture.

Parish begins, as such shows usually do, in medias res, with a truly great car chase through the tight streets of New Orleans, where you never know when a wrong turn might lead you into a jazz parade. (You know eventually it will happen, just as surely as you know that a different pursuit will eventually take place in an above-ground cemetery, because this is N’awlins, baby!)

It’s the best action scene in the show. It’s maybe the only memorable action scene in the show. Credit, I guess, to Sunu Gonera, who co-created the show (with Danny Brocklehurst) and directed the first two episodes, for the bait-and-switch. But not too much credit, since Gonera was removed from the show under unpleasant circumstances and is being heavily underplayed in AMC promotion for … wholly logical reasons.

Was Parish written by people with only a casual tourist’s understanding of New Orleans, or was it written for audiences with only a casual tourist’s interest in New Orleans? And does the distinction matter? The series is packed with the most basic and overplayed of New Orleans references — I’m 90 percent sure a nod to AA meetings serving day-old beignets was a joke, but who could tell? — with troweled-on accents to match.

The use of the Tongais as adversaries is a rare point of specificity, offering a backstory that includes snippets of native language and ties to uprisings against Mugabe and some points of immigration-based depth. It helps that the effectively conflicted Momoh, the sternly calculating Mbuli and the properly unhinged Mbakop are all very good.

It doesn’t help that most of their dialogue is from a crime drama cliché handbook, or that the series lets plot mechanics supersede nuance at every turn. I’d run out of interest in Parish by the fourth episode, but then the fifth episode — directed by Ernest Dickerson — piqued some curiosity by introducing a lot of new elements in a hurry. Then the sixth episode fell completely flat, relying on one ridiculously laughable coincidence and a lot of heavy-handed seeding for a wishful second season.

I’d say maybe you could wait and see if Parish finds a different gear and a more refined voice in its second season, especially given the creative upheaval that took place in the first. But what’s the urgency? This is Esposito’s second heavily accented, stylish crime show in the past month. There just isn’t enough else to set Parish apart.
