What is the modern resume? Or more importantly, how does the modern resume compare to the traditional resume? The differences are certainly there, and they focus primarily on telling a career narrative and keyword optimization.

While traditional resumes or CVs can vary in range or length, the typical length of a modern resume usually hovers around one to two pages. In fact, more and more recruiters actually prefer two pages over one page, even if you're an entry-level candidate. 

According to a study that involved almost 500 recruiters, hiring managers, and HR professionals and nearly 8,000 resumes, recruiters are 2.3 times as likely to prefer two-page resumes over one-page resumes, regardless of a candidate's job level. This means if you have enough information to go on to that second page, do so. If you don't, leave it at one page. 

If you have many years of experience, you should still cut your resume down to two pages. Recruiters spend less than 10 seconds reviewing your resume, so it's important to present a succinct document that highlights the recent — and more relevant — parts of your work history, skills, and education.

Format and style

Modern industry standards call for more comprehensive formats and narrative career storytelling. With this, it is essential to “trim the fat” off of your resume and optimize its content. 

This begins with the removal of the objective statement and references from your resume , which have been deemed outdated. These two sections of the resume have been removed to include more comprehensive content, including a career summary and an Areas of Expertise section.

First, it's imperative to insert a career summary in lieu of an objective statement at the beginning of your resume. Career summaries are two to four lines that are typically like your elevator pitch, outlining why you're qualified for the job. Next, you can elect to insert six to nine “Areas of Expertise” bullet points utilizing keywords taken from the job descriptions you've been looking at to highlight your relevant skills and improve visibility on major resume hosting sites.

After these two sections, list your latest experiences up to 15 years — going back any further will just make your resume too long and will include information recruiters aren't looking for. The idea is to get the document to two pages filled with relevant information that highlights why you're the best candidate for the job.

You also want to leave enough room for an Education and Credentials section to wrap up the resume. These are the areas where education, training, certifications, and awards are compiled and listed, serving as rudimentary qualifications in many instances.

Believe it or not, your resume needs to include relevant keywords in order to be considered for the job. As mentioned, many recruiters search for specific keywords or terms when finding their ideal candidates. Also, many companies utilize applicant tracking software to help scan through the hundreds of applications they receive for a job posting, looking for the correct terms relevant to the job. This means that if your resume isn't optimized, this system will dispose of your resume before it reaches human eyes.

A fresh, modern design can help your resume stand out and leave a positive impression on recruiters and hiring managers. Here’s what I recommend for building a modern resume:

  • Clean, professional layout. Opt for a layout that’s visually appealing and easy to read. Avoid cluttered designs and overly decorative elements that may distract from your content.
  • Plain font. Stick to standard, easy-to-read fonts such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman. These fonts are widely accepted and are compatible with applicant tracking systems (ATSs), ensuring your resume is easily scannable by both humans and software.
  • Keywords. Tailor your resume to each job application by incorporating industry-specific keywords and phrases relevant to the position. Many companies use ATS software to screen resumes, so this will increase the likelihood of your resume being noticed.
  • Organized sections. Structure your resume into clear sections, including Contact Information; Summary or Objective; Work Experience; Skills; and Education, plus any additional relevant sections, such as Certifications or Volunteer Work. This organization makes it easy for recruiters to quickly find the information they need.
  • Summary/objective statement. Start your resume with a summary that highlights your key qualifications and career goals. Keep it concise, focusing on what sets you apart and what you aim to achieve in your career.

I’ve been denied PTO requests on multiple occasions, which is becoming increasingly frustrating. Most of them are denied on the grounds of staffing needs. Do I have any recourse in fighting these denials? What can I do to ensure PTO approvals? –Chanette

You may indeed have some recourse in addressing these denied paid-time-off (PTO) requests. Start by reviewing your company’s PTO policy and procedures. Many employers have specific guidelines regarding PTO requests, including deadlines for submission and limits on the number of employees who can be on leave simultaneously, to ensure adequate staffing levels.

First, check if your PTO requests were made in accordance with company policy. If they were not, ensure that you adhere to the established procedures for future requests to increase the likelihood of approval.

However, if you followed company policy and your requests were still denied, consider discussing the matter with your manager or HR team. Seek clarification on the reasons for the denials and inquire about potential strategies to improve the approval rate for your requests.

It’s also essential to consider whether your state mandates sick leave, and if your company uses PTO to fulfill those requirements. If so, your employer may be obligated to approve leave requests that align with qualifying reasons for sick leave under the law. If you’re uncertain about your state’s sick-leave requirements, consult your HR team for clarification.

Ultimately, unless there is a contractual agreement or policy stating otherwise, employers typically have discretion in managing PTO usage. However, by following company procedures and addressing your concerns with management or HR, you may increase the likelihood of having your PTO requests approved more frequently.

If you're wondering why you're not landing interviews, it might be due to some outdated practices that no longer serve you well. But don’t worry! I'll guide you through how to give your resume a modern, standout makeover. Trust me, a few tweaks can make a massive difference.

Outdated practice #1: The dreaded objective statement

Gone are the days when resumes began with a generic statement about your career goals. Modern employers scan resumes looking for immediate value. To put it bluntly: prospective employers care far more about their own goals than about yours.

Connect with those goals immediately by swapping out the objective statement for a compelling professional statement that focuses on the value you can bring. This should be a brief but punchy overview of what you bring to the table—think of it as your elevator pitch.

With Microsoft Word, you can easily format this section to make it pop so it instantly catches the recruiter's eye.

Instead of mentioning references on your resume, keep a separate list of references handy in a neat Microsoft Word document, ready to whip out when needed. This lets you maximize your resume's real estate for what truly matters: showing off why you're the best candidate for the job.

Outdated practice #3: Listing every job you've ever had

Your resume isn't an autobiography. As your career progresses, some experiences become less relevant. So, on an ongoing basis, streamline your resume so that it focuses on the most recent and relevant jobs that align with your current career goals. This approach not only keeps your resume crisp and concise but also tailors it to the specific position you're aiming for.

If you have lots of career interests or you’re applying to different kinds of roles, consider this strategy:

  • Create a “master” resume that contains your entire career history. This resume can be as long as you like—you won’t be submitting it anywhere—but make sure your job descriptions and accomplishments are “final” so you can easily cut and paste them.
  • Create shorter resumes that are tailored to each path you’re interested in, pasting in only the most relevant information from your master resume. (Alternative: make a copy of your master resume and delete irrelevant work experience).
  • Update bullet points and other specifics as needed to further tailor the resume.
  • Clearly name and label your resume so you can quickly find the right one when you’re applying for jobs.

LONDON (Reuters) -Britain's King Charles will return to public duties next week for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer as he makes good progress following treatment and a period of recuperation, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.

In February, the palace revealed that the 75-year-old king had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer detected in tests after a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.

Although Charles continued with official state business, the diagnosis led him to postpone public engagements to begin treatment and rest.

"His majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the king is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

"His majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise."

Although it was too early to say how much longer his cancer treatment would last, the spokesperson said his doctors were "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery".

No further details about his condition or his treatment were given, in line with the usual stance on medical privacy.

While pictured and filmed carrying out some official duties in private, Charles's only public appearance came last month when he greeted well-wishers in an impromptu walkabout after an Easter church service in Windsor, raising hopes that his health was improving.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak responded to the news of the king's return to public duties, saying on social media site X: "Brilliant news to end the week!"

JAPANESE EMPEROR VISIT

To mark his return, Charles and his wife Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment centre in London next Tuesday, the palace said. It was also confirmed that the Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, would pay a state visit in late June.

However, Charles will not carry out his usual summer programme and his plans will be crafted in consultation with his medical team to minimise risks to recovery, the palace said.

The king's absence has coincided with news that his daughter-in-law Kate, wife of his son and heir Prince William, was undergoing preventative chemotherapy after tests in the wake of major abdominal surgery revealed cancer had been present.

The Princess of Wales, often known by her maiden name Kate Middleton, will herself only return to public duties when her medical team say she is well enough to do so.

Charles's health scare came less than 18 months into his reign after he succeeded from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, and less than a year since his coronation, Britain's biggest ceremonial event for seven decades.

"As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year," Buckingham Palace said.
