Familiar; head-scratching; short; tame; TV-ish; unsatisfying.
Review by Joel Hilke ★ 2
Rented this one hoping for some gold old fashioned craft-iness mixed with sorority secret society scares. I guess it's got a tiny bit of those things but mainly its got no budget and no particularly artistic eye with the budget it does have. It's just flat and mundane.
The flick is about a girl who attends college and is forced to join the "York Witches Society" by the dean, as is so likely to happen. And before you can wave your magic wand, she accidentally summons an evil spirit who harasses them and the guy running the low budget fog machine.
No point in bagging on the movie too much. It is what it is and achieves nothing more. Maybe they were earnestly trying, but it mostly doesn't work, isn't remotely scary, nor does it show a modicum of creativity.
Review by Dr_Nostromo ★★½
"Is that all you have to offer? You dispense the gruesome details of the past like it's a shopping list reeling off the blood and guts of the darkest time of our history and all you have to bring us is tired jokes."
The direct descendant of a real witch attracts the attention of a college witch society ...and a 500 year old witch hunter. This is a low budget affair with a simple story where a vast majority of any semblance of action or scares takes place in the fog in the dark ..thereby saving a ton of money is spec fx and sets. However, the amateur actors showed a genuinely earnest and serious effort to do the best they could with what they had making them normal, intelligent people with honest reactions that kept me interested. Not a good film but not that bad. It was ok.
Review by conico ★
York Witches Society was not the movie I was expecting it to be.
The plot was flimsy and the witches weren't very witchy. The spooky parts took place in a dark and empty studio room illuminated by a single dim light on the character in the scene and a lot of fog. There was so much fog in this movie that I'm fairly certain that 50% of the budget must have gone to the fog machines. I suppose this could count as a slasher, but the kills were scarier in Harry Potter and the TV show Charmed .
York Witches Society was a spooky season let down.
Review by taoknitter ★
I really wanted this to be good. The actresses were earnest and probably not really bad, but the directing sucked. The editing was bad and too slow, and nothing new or original happened. Don’t bother. It’s not even campy enough to be entertaining.

The kind of movie that has so much promise, then disappointments you as time slithers on. a small reference to Charmed, and that’s about the only highlight of this whole movie. House of Anubis is better then this….

serio tenho que parar de ver coisas assim só pq envolve bruxas, unica coisa interessante aqui foi o pouco de elemento de terror que colocaram o resto tudo preguiçoso e nada original

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
1 of the ladies in this movie goes to college with 2 3 ring binders labeled WITCHCRAFT 1 and WITCHRAFT 2 & then some witches let her try to become a real witch.
They say the title of the movie less than 10 minutes into it.
I do like that a lot of it just takes place in a black room with fog added to make it look like they are running around outside. Nice thing to do when you have no money. Makes it feel like a play really.

Often riding the line between made for TV BBC flick but gets a little edgier than that. Entertaining throughout though. Enjoyable watch.

‘Abigail’ Review: Horror by Numbers
In this cheerfully unambitious vampire movie, a bloodsucker is shut up in an old mansion with some nitwit criminals. Will there be gore? You bet.
- Share full article
By Manohla Dargis
A cheerfully obvious splatterthon, the new horror movie “Abigail” follows a simple, time-tested recipe that calls for a minimal amount of ingredients. Total time: 109 minutes. Take a mysterious child, one suave fixer and six logic-challenged criminals. Place them in an extra-large pot with a few rats, creaking floorboards and ominous shadows. Stir. Simmer and continue stirring, letting the stew come to a near-boil. After an hour, crank the heat until some of the meat falls off the bone and the whole mix turns deep red. Enjoy!
That more or less sums up this movie, a horror flick that’s serviceable enough to make you occasionally giggle or flinch, yet is also so aggressively unambitious that it scarcely seems worth griping about. It centers on the kidnapping of the title character (a fine Alisha Weir), an outwardly self-possessed 12-year-old ballerina who’s snatched one night by a half-dozen genre types. A formulaically diverse cohort of underworld bottom feeders (played by Dan Stevens, among others), these Scooby-Doo-ish chuckleheads come with divergent skills, histories and expiration dates, and are largely tasked with padding the reed-thin story and dying horribly.
The filmmakers — it was written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — have outfitted the story with the usual particulars. Much of the movie unfolds inside a sprawling labyrinthine mansion that looks like it was imagineered by an amusement park designer who scanned some old horror movies while thumbing through picture books on the history of the European aristocracy. There are suits of armor flanking the front door, a bearskin rug on the floor, an empty coffin tucked in a corner and oddly, given the genre circumstances, some fresh garlic in an otherwise derelict kitchen.
There are some tangy bits, including Giancarlo Esposito, who enters, barks some orders and soon leaves the kidnappers alone with Abigail in the mansion while they wait for her father to pay a ransom within 24 hours. Once this narrative stopwatch begins, the crew members — who also include Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, an amusing Kevin Durand and Angus Cloud (who died in 2023 ) — banter and pose, grimace and scream while managing to be lightly appealing and entirely disposable. At one point, the filmmakers nod at one of their influences with a shot of Agatha Christie’s 1939 mystery novel “ And Then There Were None ,” about a group of people who are enigmatically offed.
“Abigail” has been described as a take on “ Dracula’s Daughter ” (1936), one of the horror films in Universal’s vault, some of which it has resurrected in some fashion. The press notes for “Abigail” name-check a few vampire titles, but “Daughter” isn’t among them, and for good reason because there’s little to link these two. That’s too bad; the earlier film is a true curiosity. It stars Gloria Holden as a countess who preys on men and women alike, and begs a doctor to help her with her “ghastly” condition. With its lesbian overtones, the movie is a vexed and tasty text — censors urged the studio to avoid suggestions of “ perverse sexual desire ” — and the countess a complex villain in a film that is very much worth a look.
Abigail Rated R for gore and more gore. Running time: 1 hour 49 minutes. In theaters.

Civil War review – Alex Garland’s delirious dive into divided US society
Fratricidal warfare has exploded in North America, and war photographers including Lee (Kirsten Dunst) are eager to capture the money shot in this violent action thriller
W riter-director Alex Garland stages a spectacular if evasively apolitical “civil war” in this futurist-dystopian action thriller, involving hundreds of extras lying on the road next to upturned blackened cars with CGI-mutilated buildings in the smoky distance. The film’s fence-sitting reluctance to name any of the issues that might actually result in a civil war arguably means that the film can be enjoyed by the widest possible audience base. But the whole thing does finally snap into shape for a Call of Duty melee in the heart of American democracy, an ugly denouement possibly riffing on the January 6 Capitol attack, in which something seems to be clearly at stake and which (belatedly) gives us a glimpse of believable horror and delirium.
The scene is an America whose evident but unspecified divisions have exploded into open fratricidal warfare. The states of Texas and California are now ruled by the rebellious secessionists, the Western Forces, or WF, making massive advances on Washington DC, a situation about which the president ( Nick Offerman ) is in denial, making delusional TV addresses about how well he’s doing.
A group of photojournalists now plans to make the terrifyingly dangerous journey in a press SUV behind WF lines, possibly hoping to tag along with their advance on the capital, each secretly dreaming of the ultimate money shot: the capture or execution of the commander-in-chief. Veteran war photographer Lee is played by Kirsten Dunst with a permanently sorrowful and disapproving schoolteacherly expression of dismay; her buddy is Reuters reporter Joel (Wagner Moura) who is a warfare-adrenaline junkie, euphoric after each scary shoot up. (“Holy fuckin’ shit! What a fuckin’ rush!”) Ageing veteran Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) is a New York Times reporter, the voice of wisdom. Just-out-of-college newbie Jessie, played by Cailee Spaeny, cheekily sweet-talks Joel into letting her ride along in their grownups’ car and almost overnight turns from a callow student into a cool wiseacre. They have conversations, in the time honoured manner of fictional war journalists, about subjects like whether journalism makes a difference and what they would be prepared to photograph – but weirdly don’t talk about what has caused this civil war.
It is clearly a reasonably diverse group, although it is this very diversity that gives us an easier task of guessing which of them is going to make a self-sacrificial gesture of courage to save the others. For their journey, Garland gives them freaky and surreal episodes and encounters, underscored by interesting and emphatic musical choices that mimic their dissociative trauma, although sometimes these episodes will be suddenly curtailed. At one stage they’re pinned down by a sniper in an abandoned outdoor play area with Christmas music bizarrely playing … the next thing we know they’re safely back in the car. How? It’s a strange, violent dream of disorder, drained of ideological meaning.
