My Computer Ate My Homework

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

From the book When the Teacher Isn't Looking

My computer ate my homework. Yes, it’s troublesome, but true. Though it didn’t gnaw or nibble and it didn’t chomp or chew.

It digested it completely. It consumed my homework whole, when I pressed the Shift and Enter keys instead of Shift-Control.

It devoured my hours of typing, every picture, chart and graph, and it left me most unsettled when I thought I heard it laugh.

I would guess it was a virus, or it could have been a worm, that deleted every bit but didn’t prompt me to confirm.

I suppose I might have pressed Escape instead of pressing Save, but, regardless, my computer now will never misbehave.

For I found a good solution and I smiled to hear the crash, when I chucked it out the window and it landed in the trash.

Technology in the Classroom

Integrate Technology Effectively

My computer ate my homework

dog-ate-hw-2012-08-12-08-16.png

As our school year rapidly approaches I thought I would share a policy with you fine people that I will be sharing with the colleagues of my own school. The policy is a simple one but very important. It is: Technology is not an excuse . This year my school is starting to implement a 1:1 program from grades 8 through 12. This program means that these students will be carrying around and allowed to use their own device throughout the school day and when warranted. This also means that students will be doing more and more work digitally and less physically. In short they will be turning in more projects, papers and homework electronically and not turning it in by hand. That means that corrupt files, deleted files, lost work, etc. will become the new dog that eats student’s homework. I am here to say NO! This is not an excuse. Read past the break to find out how you can stomp out this excuse before students even think it and why they shouldn’t be thinking that way in the first place.

First let’s talk about how to get this in place. Above all else, plan ahead, be proactive (not reactive), keep it transparent and offer support. Here are the steps I think will work.

Step 1 – Get Proactive

For this to be truly effective it must be adopted by everyone. That means go talk to your administration and your handy dandy IT folks. The IT folks can create guides on whatever services you are working with (Dropbox, Minus, SkyDrive, Edmodo, etc.) so teachers, students, administration and parents are all on the same page and know how to use these services effectively. The admin can get the word out to parents of this new policy. All of this should be done before the first day of school (ideally).

Also, emails or meetings with all the teachers should sent out or held so everyone will be on the same page on how they handle late work of this nature.

Step 2 – Educate your teachers

Talking about a new policy is good and all but the staff needs to feel comfortable with it as well, and when you’re dealing with technology some teachers may not be all that comfortable. A sit down Q&A will give teaches an opportunity to express their questions, concerns and discuss how to handle certain student questions and most of all to emphasize this is a school wide policy not something that is used occasionally. You want to make sure that the teachers don’t feel alone with this process. It should be a school wide and everyone should feel free to discuss it with everyone else.

Step 3 – First days of school

Now it’s time to be a tyrant (of sorts). Explain to the students that they need to be responsible and back up their work. If they lose their work because it becomes corrupted, the program shuts down, the program freezes or a virus ate it, then they need to redo it, simple as that. They should be backing up copies in the cloud and on a USB flash drive. There are plenty of options for free online office programs( Google Docs , Microsoft Live , Zoho , LibreOffice , OpenOffice ). If they are unsure how to do that show them the guide, walk them through it, but explain to the student that you can help but it is ultimately their responsibility.

The main idea to drive home is that there are plenty of ways to back up and secure your work. There is no real excuse (corruption, lost, accidentally deleted, etc.) that can actually justify not turning in the work. If all the teachers are doing this, then the students will understand that you aren’t just being a grumpy teacher without your daily cup of joe. This is actually a serious policy that is going to be enforced by everyone.

Step 4 – Consistency

It is time to put the policy into action. When a student comes up with no work to turn because “Microsoft Word just quit and I lost all my work.” then you will know what to do. Explain to them that they are still responsible and that they should have saved early, often and backed it up with GoogleDocs (GoogleDrive now), SkyDrive, Edmodo, etc. and on a USB. It’s just like handing in a typed paper. If you forget the paper at home the day it is due, then it is late. It’s really not much different than that. What is great about technology is that there are so many ways to save and back it up now that really “losing” digital work is pretty hard to do, especially if the student took all the measures they were supposed to.

Common Student Responses – “It’s not my fault.”

Students will always come back with “It’s not my fault that the computer screwed up my paper.” This is true, but it is not the teacher’s fault either. At the end of the day it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the work he/she does can be turned in and is backed up. If the computer messed up and the last three weeks of grades I have recorded are erased, it is up to me find those grades and reenter them. I like to give my students this example when they can’t quite see my point. Pretend three weeks of grades suddenly disappear from my electronic grade book. I don’t just throw up my arms and say “Well, I guess those don’t count. It’s not my fault they were erased.” Parents, administration and most of all students won’t swallow that. I need to find the back up and if that doesn’t work, I need to find those grades by tracking them down. Sure it sucks, but it’s part of my responsibility.

Another excuse I’ve heard often is “The computer (or Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Drive) just deleted it! It was finished and then it’s not there anymore!” If this was 1995 maybe I could believe this, but it’s not. This technology has been around for a while and places like Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, etc. make a lot of money off of these services. They don’t just delete people’s files at will and randomly. If they did, would you use them? Of course not. For someone to suggest that this happens means there is a serious problem with that service and they need to get in touch with them. If someone hacked their account and deleted the files, then they need to contact that service again and report it. Also, they should also be storing their work on a flash drive. This is something that people can’t really hack.

Regardless of the excuse, the reality is that few are actually acceptable. Students must be responsible for turning in an assignments on time.

If it is habitual, it probably isn’t the technology to blame but the student. With the excuses out of the way, then we can focus on helping that student get his/her work in on time and get them on the right track.

Reblogged this on Teaching PNIEB… ideas and stuff and commented: Love this article!

Thanks for the reblog and the comment. Hopefully all goes well. I’ll update it in a few weeks and hopefully everything is on the right track.

Now let’s see how long it takes for students to figure out that they can purposely corrupt a file and then try to use that as an excuse…….

Won’t matter for me. I know that old notepad trick and am all over it. Those 6th graders are entering a world of pain! LOL! Good to hear from you Erik, can’t wait for the year to start.

The realisation that they can’t get away with corrupting files e.t.c is going to hit them like a falcon punch to the face haha.

Speaking (Page 13)

In the story Patrick does difficult things he hates to do, because the elf pretends he needs help. Have you ever done something difficult or frightening, by pretending about it in some way? Tell your classmates about it.

Say what you feel about homework. (The words and phrases in the boxes may help you.) Do you think it is useful, even though you may not like it? Form pairs, and speak to each other.

For example:

You may say, “I am not fond of homework.”

Your partner may reply, “But my sister helps me with my lessons at home, and that gives a boost to my marks.”

I: I am not fond of reading books.

My partner: But my brother told me that reading books gives a boost to your vocabulary.

I: My friend is not so keen on scoring good grades in the exams.

My partner: But my sister said that she would assist me in my lessons to score well in the exams.

I: I have not developed a liking for playing football.

My partner: But my cousin assured me that he would help me to learn how to play football.

I: My younger brother has taken to playing chess.

My partner: But my brother does not support me in playing indoor games.

I: I have appealed to my Physical Training teacher to allow me a day’s break from the drill session.

My partner: But playing outdoor games can be a boon for your health.

I: I have always had a taste for delicious food.

My partner: But my mother says that I should clean my bare hands with the aid of soap and water before touching the food.

Writing (Page 13-14)

This story has a lot of rhyming words, as a poem does. Can you write out some parts of it like a poem, so that the rhymes come at the end of separate lines?

Patrick never did homework. “Too boring,” he said.

He played baseball and hockey and Nintendo instead.

  • The man of the smallest size

He was sincere and wise

  • Patrick loved to play sports, not work

He wasted his time and had pending homework

  • The elf promised to help and wore a high tall hat

Patrick saved him from the naughty cat

Look at these sentences.

1. “Too boring,” he said.

2. Cleaned his room, did his chores.

When we speak, we often leave out words that can easily be guessed. We do not do this when we write, unless we are trying to write as we speak (as in the story).

So, if we were to write carefully, we would say:

  • “Homework is too boring,” he said.
  • He cleaned his room and did his chores.

Read the sentences carefully.

Question C:

Rewrite the following incomplete sentences carefully, so that the reader does not have to guess what is left out.

1. more and more books

2. too difficult

3. got up late, missed the bus

4. solved the mystery

1. My sister loves reading more and more books.

2. Maths is too difficult to understand.

3. Last Friday, my brother got up late, he missed the bus for college.

4. The detective solved the mystery of the crime scene.

Question D:

Look at this cartoon by R.K.Laxman. Read the sentence given below the cartoon. Discuss the following questions with your partner.

  • What is it about?
  • Do you find it funny? If so, why?
  • Do you think a cartoon is a serious drawing? Why or why not?

NCERT Solutions Honeysuckle Class 6 English Unit 1 - Who Did Patrick’s Homework - 3

  • It depicts a father’s concern for the betterment and improvement of his son.
  • Yes, the cartoon exhibits a funny tone. The father orders his son to finish his homework. But he stops the boy from reading the laws against child labour.
  • A cartoon mostly depicts the day-to-day activities of life with funny images. Although the above cartoon is a serious drawing, it draws our attention to a common problem that affects one and all.

Back at School? What To Do When the Computer Eats Your Homework

Make sure your school projects are backed up

Now that all you students are back to school, and fully immersed in class schedules and creating projects, the old angst may have crept back into your life … anxieties about getting work done, keeping your work organized, turning it in on time — and not losing it!

These days, there are many reasons why having an external drive to back up your work is even more important than having a backpack to carry your tools in, or a wardrobe suitable for classroom presentations (or high school dances). The average student owns several different devices that help create, manipulate, manage and access your data. Whether it’s a smartphone, tablet or laptop, your content is often saved and stored in different places, and it’s all too easy for those devices to get lost, stolen or damaged. Having backups of your schoolwork, photos and videos means that your precious hard work and priceless memories stay safe whenever the unexpected happens.

Simple plan: the 3-2-1 rules of backup

If you’ve never backed up your data before — or if you need a refresh on backup best practices — an easy place to start is by following the 3-2-1 “rules of backup.”

  • Start by ensuring you always have at least three copies of your files. This means you should have three separate storage devices. Your files should live on all three (usually the original copy, along with two backups) in case one gets lost or damaged.
  • Next, keep your files on at least  two different local media types to protect against different kinds of hazards. This can include storing files on an external hard drive, a memory card, or burn a copy on optical media like DVD-RW. The chances of your data failing on two different types of storage are much lower than failures of the same storage type. Having a mix keeps the odds in your favor.
  • Finally, make sure one copy of your files lives offsite. This means that one of your storage devices needs to be in a different physical location from the rest — it could be an offsite NAS with remote backup, or cloud-based storage or backup service. If you’re backing up only to an external drive near your computer, your files won’t be safe in catastrophic events like a fire or flooding.

Having duplicate copies of your files on separate drives keeps your data safe from any accidents that might happen — from late night coffee spills to losing your backpack. These redundancies ensure that your content has an insurance policy, and can be easily retrieved.

If you don’t do it regularly, you’re not backing up

Choosing the right drive for backing up your data is so important. One lineup that’s very highly reviewed is the Seagate Backup Plus line of portable and desktop external hard drives. The Backup Plus Hub is unique in offering extra USB ports on its front and brings as much as 8TB to the table. The portable version comes in varying colors and slim sizes and capacities up to 5TB, storing hundreds of hours of media or thousands of photos and documents, and is light, thin and durable so it is easily transported from class to class.

School can be tough, but creating a backup routine and choosing a reliable hard drive to keep your work safe shouldn’t be. Seagate’s Backup Plus drives can give you peace of mind, so you can keep on cramming.

The Computer Ate My Homework

little kid sitting at desk learning on ipad with pictures and diagrams

The family computer recently stopped working. This wouldn’t be the end of the world normally, however, my oldest son’s second-grade classroom implemented a new homework policy. Instead of having homework on paper, all homework is done on the computer across three sites.

This new policy was implemented because it makes the homework “smarter.” The difficulty of the work can automatically adjust as the student improves. A report is sent to the teacher right away, letting her know how long it is taking the student to do the work. She gets a readout that can compare the student’s progress to the rest of the class, as well as a general readout of how the class is doing overall. And, since my oldest son is in a bilingual program, he can do Spanish dictation, record it, and send it to his teacher so she can hear if he is having pronunciation problems. Finally, since the work is algorithmically graded and monitored, the teacher can spend more time planning what to do in class, based on common issues of the students, instead of spending a good portion of time grading homework.

When the computer stopped working, we were suddenly forced to acknowledge some access limits. The first was, when my son comes home, my computer is not there. So, where would he be able to do his homework? We thought of the library, but there isn’t one very close to us, and going to one would add commute time to homework. Additionally, once there, having a young child yelling at the computer in Spanish seemed counter to the culture of the library. Given the added time, and the limits on what he could do, we decided against the library.

My son had received an affordable tablet for his birthday, so we decided to see if the websites that he uses for homework had apps we could install on his tablet. They did.

Our solution was using a different device. The cookies, the unique bits of data that linked the computer and browser to my son’s ID all changed. If this reoccurs, it might flag his profile.

The apps have their own security issues as well. Licenses for apps are often different than the ones on laptops. In order to function properly, tablets tend to need to gather a lot more information about what is happening in the device. Additionally, as tablets are portable devices, there is a lot more information, such as location, saved usernames, reading files in other programs, etc. that can be made available. The apps, thankfully, didn’t need access to all information about other applications running in the background or the location data. But, if they did, we would need to download them. If, in the future, they want to trace my son’s tablet around by tracking the location, and then sending that information to the teacher, and I want him to be able to do his homework on his tablet, I will have to say “yes.”

The question this brings up is, what do protocols — that ensure teachers, parents, and students are aware of security issues and data tracking — look like? California’s Student Online Personal Information Protection Act is promising and the Student Digital Privacy Act proposed by President Obama in mid-January mean there is a bigger conversation happening, as we move to determining how this will look in the future, we need to make sure that the voices of families are not lost in determining what practices will be legally protected.

There is a secondary problem: a language barrier. It’s more obvious at my son’s school than it might be for students in a single language school. When technological practices and digital media are made central to learning, there is a chance that the inability to simply navigate the space might be an issue for some families, especially when the child might not be old enough to read in the language of instruction. How do we make sure these families also are included and protected?

There is another data issue that isn’t just about data literacy: the economic and place barrier to computerized homework. For students who do not have access to these things for socioeconomic reasons, getting to a library during working hours might be their best option, but might not be a realistic possibility. Plus, having to go to the library to do homework seems to go against the idea of it being work you can do at home.

There are alternatives to online homework. At my son’s school, for those who cannot access the homework online, the teachers can send home printouts from the website. Students who have barriers to access are not computed into the class averages and when they are, only partial information is collected. Even if the teacher inputs the student responses, information about time to complete, attempts, etc., are not included as they are for students doing homework online. Additionally, relational information about what is taking more time, is lost. This means that the algorithm that tracks class progress is flawed. As the teachers become dependent on these readouts to determine what to work on, there is a risk that some students will be left behind.

So the big questions I am left with from this ordeal are: how can we make sure that students who don’t have access to technology are able to get the same level of feedback? And, how do we make sure their progress is part of the class report?

I don’t know the answers, but if anyone has any ideas or experiences of best practices for these situations, I’d love to hear them.

ICSE STUDY GUIDE

I Tried to Do My Homework by Kenn Nesbitt (Cambridge Connection English)

"I tried to do my homework

but a show was on TV.

A song was on the radio.

  A friend was texting me.

My email chimed, and so, of course.

I had to look at that.

It linked me to a video

  of someone's silly cat.

  I watched a dozen videos,

and then I played a game.

  I almost didn't hear her

when my mother called my name.

I looked up at the clock

and it was time to go to bed.

  I didn't get my homework done;

  Just other stuff in stead.

  I hope my teacher listens

to the cause of my inaction.

It's not my fault the world

  is just one big distraction."

Summary of the Poem :

In the poem, a little kid is telling about all the distractions it faces while it supposed to do its homework. It is a kid of this modern age, surrounded by all the scientific gadgets.

At the beginning, the kid is about to do homework and distracted by a TV show and a song on the radio. Then the kid gets attracted to the chime of the email and checks it. It is a video link of someone's silly cat. The kid watches it and continues watching a dozen videos and ends up playing a game. The mother of the kid is calling, but it does not hear it as it is so engaged in the videos and the game.

The kid looks at the clock and it is time to go to bed. The homework is not done due to other things he is engaged with. The kid is scared of tomorrow at school. It hopes that the teacher would listen to the cause of not doing homework. It is not its fault as the world it lives is full of distraction.

Comprehension

A. Answer the questions.

1. Who is the speaker in the poem?

= The speaker in the poem is a kid, most probably a little boy.

2. How old do you think the speaker is?

= I think the speaker is around ten years old.

3. What task did the speaker have from school?

= The speaker had homework from school.

4. Did the speaker complete the task?

= No, the speaker did not complete the task.

B. Fill in the blanks.

The speaker did not complete homework  because he had many distractions. He spent the time watching TV, listening to song on radio, checking email, watching videos and playing game . Finally, when his mother called him he realised it was time to go to bed . He thinks his teacher ought to understand that it was not his fault, rather his world was full of distractions .

C. Read the lines and answer the questions.

1. "My email chimed, and so, of course

I had to look at that."

a. What is meant by email chimed?

= It meant that the speaker got an email. The chime was the notification sound of the email.

b. Why does the speaker say that he had to look at that?

= The speaker had to look at that to check the email.

c. Do you think he could have checked it later?

= Yes, I think he could have checked it later. As he is a little child, so he would never have an urgent email. So he could definitely checked it later.

c. Would you like to play games on your own or with friends? Why?

= I would like to play games, either outdoor games or indoor games or video games, with my friends only. As it is more fun to play games with friends.

D. Think and answer.

1. Do you think the teacher will understand and excuse the speaker for not doing homework?

= I think the teacher will definitely understand the mischief the kid has done and scold him for his deeds. It is clear that the kid is careless about his studies and have all his attention towards the stupid things around him.

2. If the teacher scolds the speaker, do you think she is right? Give reasons for your answer.

= If the teacher scolds the speaker, I think she is right. As the kid is very inattentive to his studies. He is engaged in many a thing and wastes his time except doing his homework. He should have the minimum knowledge that he should do all the other things only after doing his homework complete.

3. Do you have similar distractions? If so, then share your experience.

If not, state the reasons.

= Yes, I have similar distractions. In my home, when I sit to do my homework, all the other things attract me. My grandparents watches TV, my elder sister sings, my elder brother plays video games in his laptop, around me. Then only I think of the teacher taking my homework on the next day. I move on to a quiet place far away from all this and do my homework.
